Led Zeppelin IV
Led ZeppelinHard to argue this should be anything but a 5. I won't waste my time justifying. Go live your life
Hard to argue this should be anything but a 5. I won't waste my time justifying. Go live your life
Easy 5 stars. Sublime They do lose a star due to Ian Brown's dangerous anti-vax conspiracy spreading but they also gain a star due to Ian Brown's impressive nunchuck skills
Such a weird act would never get off the ground these days but Ian Dury deserves the cult following. I've never listened to a full Blockheads album before and I thought this one was terrific! Humorous lyrics but the songs are also catchy and get the foot tapping. Good stuff all round
A surprisingly short album but an absolute corker. Also, Moondance was the first dance at my wedding. A fact I never forget.
I've listened to it twice and disliked. Disliked it the first time. Disliked it more the second. Also, my father-in-law LOVES Steeley Dan. Which may also play into my opinion
Loved this album back when I was 16 or so. Think it was the first Who cd I gave any meaningful listen to. Still fantastic. I forget how fun they were in addition to being incredible musicians. Shame Daltrey became such a miserable tit. Fav. Lyric: "Substitute you for my mum. At least I'll get my washing done".
Not an album I've listened to before and I'm not likely to listen to it again. Left me feeling cold. Other than Sound and Vision (which is great and earns the album a second star) I found the entire experience a bit boring and a slog to get through
New one for me, though I think I recognise Willow Weep For Me. Really enjoyable and, like The Who's Live at Leeds, the live album gets across how much fun Vaughan is having. Incredible voice. Will play again. I must check whether she is touring the UK any time soon...
It's fine but I'm unlikely to listen to it again. Never quite understood the praise for Iggy Pop. Other than The Passenger, his songs don't seem particularly special. Always assumed his popularity was down to his eccentric and extreme on-stage persona rather than his accomplishments as a songwriter, so it's surprising to me that he's included in the top 1001 albums of all time. The highlight was when the album finished and spotify immediately started playing Captain Beefheart
Corr, these guys have learned their scales. Fantastic album Freebird will never not fill me with nostalgia for GTA San Andreas.
Was Ok but a bit samey and forgettable. Might enjoy repeat listens but I zoned out mid-way through and didn't even realise when it began replaying songs
Enjoyable but slightly *too* country, you know? I really like the title track
Probably won't listen to it again but it was an enjoyable one-off. The Doors cover was the highlight.
Is this what Lo-Fi is? Ideal for listening whilst working. Innoffensive (unless the translated lyrics are troublesome) and chilled but not particularly memorable. My ignorance stops me from identifying what makes this album stand out from a million similar.
I reckon this is a ranking I'll grow to regret but Neil Young doesn't so much for me. I like the lyrics and I like the music but his voice puts me off. I can enjoy it in small doses but don't need a full album
He's not THAT fat. Enjoyed the album. Poor Me was my highlight, so it's a shame that wasn't available on Spotify.
Great album. I was only familiar with Another Girl, Another Planet Good punk music that doesn't make me feel too intimidated.
The Spotify description refers to the band's "eye opening sociopolitical lyrical commentary". Can't say I was able to piece together a single sentence though. I try to find something to like in all music and, whilst I did enjoy the absolute hammering of the bass drum, I struggled with this one. It started to give me heart palpitations about three-quarters into it. I'm giving 1 star as it's not for me. Not convinced real thrash metal fans truly like this music either - they're surely just pretending so that they can be part of the scene, no?
Couple of tracks sound like a piss-take but the album accidentally includes some good tunes. 2 stars.
I've listened to it twice and disliked. Disliked it the first time. Disliked it more the second. Also, my father-in-law LOVES Steeley Dan. Which may also play into my opinion
I can't really justify my anti-SD sentiments but I find their songs lacking in something... Music, lyrics, vocals all lack substance or true *feeling*. They leave me cold and bored. 2 stars as I quite liked the opening track and the piano in the Toodle-oo song Also, Ooh La La by the Faces autoplayed after the album finished and I momentarily got excited that there was another SD song I liked :(
Some good tunes I've never given a serious listen to, though also a fair few songs that aren't to my tastes. I never knew I've Got A Woman in the Kanye West song came from Elvis! Will try to listen to this again.
Really quite liked it. Not sure whether that's something I can be out and proud about, or whether PS should be considered a guilty pleasure. If I must throw in a criticism, the songs can out stay their welcome ever-so-slightly. Though that might be more of a fault with my short attention span
Really liked this one. Particularly when they were going all traditional English folk style. Some lovely tinkely instruments throughout
Let down by a couple of dud tracks but the majority of the album massively makes up for it. Seed 2.0 being an obvious highlight
This one grew on me as I listened. I ended up going straight back to the beginning and got a lot more out of it the second go around. Also, the generator is up to some trickery again. Roots and Costello have done an entire album together! It's... Ok
Pretty interesting album with a lot to like. Corrosion is a good song. Favourite member of the band: Doktor Avalanche
Not what I was expecting. I quite enjoyed the first track and one of the others but I could have done without USSA, Hay, and 22 going on 23. Oh, and also the silent 30 seconds at the beginning of the first track. 2 stars
So so good! Every song has such a catchy riff. Is there a movie where the protagonists start dancing uncontrollably? Maybe Beetlejuice? That's what this record does to me - just unconsciously bopping along
It may require a few more listens, but I'm finding it a bit boring. First track and Broken Heart have been the best. Also, matching Buck Owens' efforts in 'earliest mention of the album title within the album'
The singles are good but the rest of the album is just tedious. Still far better than modern Coldplay though
Really liked Negative Space and Shortcomings. This isn't the music I was expecting from a band called Hookworms - quite similar to LCD Soundsystem in places . I got a bit bored by parts of the second half and some of those songs.outatayed their welcome. nice record to have on in the background for work though
Loved Big Iron, though I'm pretty sure I recognise this from a computer game. I also liked Master's Call and Hanging Tree a lot. The rest of the album doesn't have any tracks quite as standout, though it is a fun listen. I do enjoy having a story to listen to 👍
Such a Night was a song I enjoyed despite never having heard it before. I probably won't listen this is ever again though
Another album that I've listened to multiple times before, which definitely skewes how enjoyable it is (rather than rating an album based on a single listen). It's so good though!
Some great bass. An album I can enjoy but will probably never listen to again.
There are a couple of good Pixies-ish tracks on this (early on in the album) but it's ultimately too much effort to wade through the rest of the record. Mostly shite rambly music that feels like it was knocked out in a day.
The heavy sounds and music is good but his creepy voice comes across as awkward. He's also cancelled these days and I'll be damned if I'm positively rating a cancelled celeb!
It was pretty good but didn't grab me in the same way a lot of 90s hip hop does. Their Spotify description makes it sound as though the 80s albums are the real records to get into so I'll give them a go at some point. Also, that clock is far too big to be worn as a necklace. What is he thinking?!
Love it! New ZZ Top fan, right here!
I really enjoyed this one. Odd that they keep referencing Teenage Kicks in other songs though (or am I imagining this?).
Not heard of this one before. Really enjoyed it but want another listen when I can give it my full attention. I think I enjoyed the first half more than the second but that might change on repeat listens. I'll give 4 stars
Decent wall of sound when played loud. Sun Hits The Sky was a highlight as well as this version of Caught By The Fuzz. Gaz's voice doesn't match his face though. 4 stars
I went through an intense Fleet Foxes period a few years ago and eventually burned out on them. It was nice to therefore go back to this after a considerable break. Lovely sounding album and it has been influential on numerous bands that have recently broken through. That being said, I do think there are a few low points between the standout tracks. Oliver James in particular 😕
I really want to like NIN but they've always been too inaccessible for me and I don't feel like I have the time to immerse myself through multiple listens. I'll get there one day... Maybe. For now, rating on my personal enjoyment, I'll give it 2 stars. But 2 of those are earned purely by the brilliance of Hurt.
A surprisingly short album but an absolute corker. Also, Moondance was the first dance at my wedding. A fact I never forget.
I love the Cure and it's really easy to get lost within any of their albums. Pornography is brilliant, though no my personal fav. I do struggle with the title track though (not the best ending to an album)
Accomplished musicians but it's just a boring boring listen.
Some amazing songs on this. My bass guitar teacher had me learning loads of Thin Lizzy tracks at one point, so listening to this elicited some nostalgic feelings. That being said, it's perhaps a little too long which makes repeat listens feel a bit of a slog. 3.5 stars, but I'll round up
From my limited exposure to Billy Bragg, I was expecting to love this. Disappointingly, I found this album tedious. Didn't sound anything like the Billy Bragg I thought I knew.
Much better than I was expecting but also a bit samey in the second half
Not my usual cup of tea, but a surprisingly musical punk album (I enjoyed the horns and harmonica). Like a lot of punk, a few songs were pretty indistinguishable from each other. But I liked Lost and Found and Minor Aversion. The last track seemed suitably Australian
I prefer my Simon with a Garfunkel but this album is pretty close to faultless. Easy 5/5.
Easy 5 stars. Sublime They do lose a star due to Ian Brown's dangerous anti-vax conspiracy spreading but they also gain a star due to Ian Brown's impressive nunchuck skills
Thankfully short. Not an album for me but I can appreciate how it has been influential on others. Therefore, 3 neutral stars
Bit spooky that we get our first Beatles album on the eve of the long awaited Disney documentary 😱. Coincidence? Yes. I'm not convinced I've ever listened to Hard Day's Night all the way through. It's a very sweet sounding album. Enjoyed getting stuck into this and I look forward to their future offerings!
The best Band songs are flipping amazing, but I find my mind wanders whilst listening to a full album. The second half dragged a bit. Particularly Lonesome Suzie and I Shall Be Released
Brilliant album to get lost in. England and In Dark Places are particular highlights.
Fantastic bit of nostalgia. There is not a bad track on this - excellent lyrics and great music (albeit dated firmly in the 90s) Five stars well earned. Oooh, but does she actually understand the meaning of "ironic"? Who cares!
Inoffensive but listenable. Bit boring though. Breakdown, Fooled Again, and American Girl were good tracks but I'm not going to listen to this one again
Pretty decent rock n roll. Sweet Emotion clearly the best of the bunch.
I really like this. The big hits are clearly brilliant (king of pain being my fav), but the other album tracks are top drawer too. Not as much reggae as I expected. Synchronicity I was great. Mother is nuts
Hard to argue this should be anything but a 5. I won't waste my time justifying. Go live your life
Far better than the previous album thrown at us by the generator (Tonight's the Night). Some great hits. Though I still struggle to make it through a whole NY album in a single sitting
Excellent guitar, good balance of songs equally witty, powerful, emotional. I love John Prime. RIP
Nah, not for me.
Quite enjoyed this one, and they are an interesting band to read about. Orgasmatron and Dead Embryonic Cells stood out to me. 3 stars as I would be happy to listen to them again but realistically won't make any effort to do so
Singles are good comfort food at this stage. The rest of the album is likeable but maybe a bit forgettable? Probably being harsh, but 3 stars seems a fair rating
It's good stuff but listening to an entire Sinatra album is a bit boring. Also, "Making Whoopee" is an awful expression.
Great voice and Sweet Love is a brilliant song. Much of the rest of the album washed over me. No standouts but I enjoyed it. 3.5 stars. I'll round up to 4
So so gruff! Really beautiful poetry, though the low voice is stepping on the toes of Tom Waits / Hades from Hadestown. Enjoyable swan song from the lyrical ledge. I'll revisit it at some point
Better than modern day Ye. However, the album feels too long. The great tunes are slightly lost amongst the average songs I did enjoy the final track setting out how Kanye became a rapper
Really like the music. The vocals are fantastic on a lot of songs but less so on others (I should probably back that up with examples...) This Hollywood Life and Stay Together are the best songs. My only fact about Suede is that the brother of Richard Osman plays bass.
I love the roughness of Pixies records. Some real quality grunge. Dig for Fire is the best track, displaying all the best qualities of the Pixies.
The good: Sunshine Superman, Season of the Witch The average: Bert's Blues The bad: everything else
I regret not giving this one a spin when it was actually Christmas. There's no way I'm sitting through a Christmas album in January. Also, Roni died recently and the Ronettes have been played on repeat on the radio as a result. Bit Ronette'd out tbh.
Never heard of Television before but I quite like this one. It's a bit Talking Heads with some excellent bass guitar. I'll give this one a few more listens for sure.
Short but very sweet. Homeward Bound is probably my favourite S&G song, which immediately earns the album a few stars. The rest of the album is a good mix of softly sung folk and more upbeat tracks to boogie along to. An easy 4 stars
Such a weird act would never get off the ground these days but Ian Dury deserves the cult following. I've never listened to a full Blockheads album before and I thought this one was terrific! Humorous lyrics but the songs are also catchy and get the foot tapping. Good stuff all round
The hits make me feel drunk as I'm immediately transported to cheesy nightclubs from my uni days. I wouldn't describe the feeling as nostalgia, as that puts too much of a positive spin on it. The non-hits are all a bit crap The exception to those two categories is Wanted Dead or Alive. A bonafide great song that has not been run into the ground through being over played.
I enjoyed this more than I thought j would, as it's not a genre I naturally gravitate to. However, it's perfect music to have playing in the background whilst cracking on with some work. I tuned in an out, which would normally be a bad thing. But it seems like an acceptable response to this album. You don't need to be paying attention. Just subconsciously groove along
I thought the album started off really strong (Chocolate Cake is a really good song I was previously unaware of) but I zoned out in the second half. 3 stars
Not a huge Manics fan but this is a decent album. 3 stars
A great album I've listened to plenty of times before. It's been a while though and I enjoyed revisiting it. The similarities are between Fight Test and Father & Son are so obvious to me now, no wonder they were caught out
Not a first time listener with this one. I like the album though it's not my favouring Bob Dylan record. Perhaps a controversial take but I'd be much more of a Dylan fan if I could listen to his music with the mouth organ removed. What a horrendous instrument
Never heard of Arrested Development before but this album is excellent. Mr. Wendal appears to be one of those songs I've heard numerous times before by never questioned its origin. Very similar to De La Soul with the addition of incredible female vocals
Not a massive fan of the White Stripes but it's hard to deny that Hotel Yorda, Fell in Love with a Girl, and We're Going to be Friends aren't fantastic songs. Three songs don't make an album though. 2.5 stars rounded up
It's Rolling Stones. I liked Loving Cup and Ventilation Blues. There was nothing I particularly disliked.
I wanted to like it but ultimately found the record quite boring. I was surprised to see they were American. I was guessing Finnish or Norwegian.
I thought it was shit tbh. Good looking guy though
Nice to have on in the background. With no reference point for swing music, I'm struggling to say much more about it though.
I love this. I have given it multiple listens now. Not nearly as psychedelic as I was expecting. It's a band of fantastic musicians (but not self indulgent), clear crisp vocals, and catchy melodies. I wouldn't call myself a Deadhead just yet, but I'm on my way!
Everyone knows she has a great voice. But every song is too softly sung and instantly forgettable. Not for me
Brilliant album Not sure how to criticise this beyond saying I prefer Neon Bible, which doesn't seem fair. So 5 stars it is (to keep Jack happy)
Good music to have on in the background though admittedly not something I'd choose to give my full attention to
Far better than I expected it to be. It's a good mix of funky music and interesting lyrics. ⭐⭐⭐
The reggae twist was subtler than expected but added a lot to the overall product. Delivers a lot in a single listen
Nice and chilled. I wouldn't have been interested in this a few years ago but my tastes are apparently changing! The spoken word track was a bit distracting though
I like the well known hits but otherwise struggle with the distinctive voice
My dad gifted me this album after accidentally buying it for himself (he got them confused with the The Avalanches). Great album with far more big recognisable tunes than I remembered. Easy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is the kind of album I'm doing this for. Not much chance I'd have given this a listen if it didn't pop up in this list. The more sober / serious songs were great, and I really liked this rendition of Cocain Blues. However, I could be doing with less of the comical tunes. Grey Goose is truly awful
Fun album but I'm unlikely to play it again
Probably pretty decent but it descends into a few too many drum solos for my tastes
Some decent tunes, but didn't keep my attention the whole album. I preferred the Byrd's album
There's a lot to like with this album. Groovy music really complimented by Cohen's deep voice. It does stray into the cheesy a couple of times though. Jazz Police is a low point for me High points: First We Take Manhatten and Tower of Song
Can't say I'm familiar with John Cale. This album is a real mixed bag. Macbeth and Paris 1919 are both great. But Hanky Panky Nohow is awful
Time to get back in this horse ... Dire Straits are a phenomenal band that I definitely didn't appreciate enough when younger. Everyone appreciates they are a bunch of incredible musicians, but Mark Knopfler's deep voice really elevates the entire thing. Without the vocals and story telling, I suspect the album might not hold my attention like it does. Brother in Arms is my favourite
I know JB' music a little bit. Diamonds and Rust is an incredible song, which sadly does not feature on this album. I think this is an album made up of covers only (no original songs), which is obviously not that unusual in the folk circles. There's a good mixture of trad. songs in familiar with, and songs im not. She has a good voice and is a good guitarist, which makes for an enjoyable album albeit not overly memorable
Left me a little cold. Spooky intro song though
Some good thonking bass throughout this album. I prefer when they lean more into the poppy side of punk. Stutter and Connection are standouts
A delightfully nostalgic listen. My brother used to hammer this album and it took me straight back to the 90s. Don't think I've ever actively sought out Tellin' Stories before, but i loved it!
Really excellent. I already new the singles / hits but the rest of the album was new to me. My kind of hip hop tbf.
I like a bit of country, but struggle to enjoy this style of country singing + lap steel guitars. To my untrained ear, the vocals in this style are far too jovial and friendly to be taken seriously as a vagrant / outlaw / prisoner / whichever hard-lifed individual he's portraying. I'm perhaps doing Merle a massive disservice (having done no research), underestimating the man's authentic nasty side, and showing ignorance to the amount of influence he has had on the artists coming after him. Aaah well
Solid blues. Can't fault, save it's not a go to genre for me
I've never been a fan of Queen, quite controversially. I understand why they are considered the legendary band that they are, but their music is just not for me That being said, I think this is their first album I have listened to in full. And it contains none of the big, unavoidable hits. And, at the risk of shocking you, I can reveal I actually quite enjoyed it ! Doesn't outstay it's welcome, the guitar solos arent too busy and overpowering. White Queen and Black Queen are both good songs. As is Loser in the EndEnd.
Too sexy. It hurts my ears.
Love Goes On and Streets of you're Town sound contemporary and a bit like the Shins. Enjoyed them. Clouds was as good song too. The rest sounded pretty forgettable and I'm slightly unsure how they're made the cut for the greatest 1001 records. Second song less so, but has a pleasant sound to it.
Pretty good, but sounds too safe. Girls Girls Girls is shite. Heart of the City is good
They are good at doing what they do. Great album. Always wondered why they spelled "nite" like that
Really interesting album, albeit slightly too long. I've heard Roadrunner before but couldn't have identified the band previously. Very cool sound. Hospital, with its erratic mismatched timing, is a very good song. Enjoyed this a lot
It was alright. Inoffensive. Bit like a more dancy Belle and Sebastian. Good music for working to
The first 3 or 4 songs are blinders, but my interest tailed off midway through. Overall, it's a good album but I won't rush to revisit it.
Blown away by this tbh. Never heard of Tricky before, but the album is excellent. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Some pretty cool jazz. Good background music. I think I'll make more of an effort to listen to this type of stuff at work Nice.
Have we already had a Slits album? I love the bass and drums throughout this. I'm sure it wasn't, but it sounds like the album might have been written with the music being added after the lyrics and melody. The instruments drop in and out and seem to mold around the vocals. Really good Adventures Close to Home
Boring glam rock. Accomplished musicians lacking any depth or interest. Shite lyrics
More bouncy and fun than Joy Division but not as bouncy or fun as The Cure. I prefer Joy Division and The Cure
Cracking voice. The whole album merged into one long track for me, but I did enjoy it.
Incredible opening to an album. This is the kind of piano playing that catches my attention more than the previous album in my list. Hard to find anything to complain about
I think I knew all these songs despite never listening to an Al Green record before. Top stuff . Nice and short too, meaning I can deal with more of my 1001 backlog!
Complete disregard to specifying when they mean FRANKENSTEIN and when they mean FRANKENSTEIN'S MONSTER. If that's punk, I'm out.
Far better than I expected it to be. Some great tracks on here 3.5
It's not really my bag, but I can see why it's on the list. Model is a great track
I wonder why a couple of the tracks are unavailable on Spotify. Outdated lyrics? I expected this to sound much more "of its time", but nah. Still absolutely love it. A great intro to hip hop for a 12 year old middle class white boy, but I reckon there's something for everyone in here. Ending to Kim is still too grim to listen to. I always skip over it
Slightly unnerving quiet gaps between tracks and not enough songs on the tying of shoelaces loses a couple of points. Still creates an interesting "soundscape". Decent .
Brilliant. Loved this. Without looking it up, I'll assume they were massively influential on Metallica. Easy 4 stars
Not a huge Iggy fan but he has a few decent tracks. A three star-er I think
There's so much to like about GnR but I cannot stand Axel Rose's screech. Music is brilliant. Fun lyrics. Shit vocals. Embarrassing sex sounds
Really like the bass and organ in Stranglers tunes. Only familiar with a couple of these songs previously, but this was a very enjoyable listen
I liked it but, other than ADI, I'm struggling to identify any defining characteristics from the other tracks. They sounded good but all ran together
Just a bit shite
Such impressive musicianship. Their sound has been massively parodied and imitated over the years, but they quality really shines through. Defo deserves its place in this list
I found it a bit boring, which I'm a bit embarrassed about ☹️
A real mixture in terms of quality, but I suppose that's easily done with a concept album. Each song fulfils a purpose after all. I like the Tommy movie with the other performers. Less fussed by the Who's actual album. But Sally Simpson, Pinball Wizard, 1921, and It's A Boy are still great in this. I'm Free is quality too
Beautiful record. Used to listen to this frequently but have no given it much thought over the recent years Lovely cosy sound. It relaxes me
I lack whatever is needed to enthuse over jazz, but it's a good background record. Not sure when it ended and Spotify' jazz algorithm kicked in
It was ok. Bit forgettable. I thought they were great when I saw them live but I have little desire to listen to their records
Interesting album. I really liked the Jarvis Cocker track and the third track. Interest waned a couple of times, which seems inevitable with a soundtrack album, even if it's an imaginary soundtrack. But there was always a decent tune lined up to bring me back around 3.5 stars
Crazy hippies. It was ok. Sounded ahead of its time in places.
It's lovely to hear a singer that enunciates clearly, eh? Lovely crisp sound to the Kinks Wiki tells me this album showed off a new sound for the kinks, in which case I'm not I'm not sure I'm familiar with their earlier sound. Sunny Afternoon is the obvious standout. Liked a few of the other tracks with more of a psychedelic air to them too. Slightly confused by the Spotify version of this album, as it includes several extra songs that appear to actually belong on different albums
The album doesn't maintain the quality of Sweet Dreams throughout, but it's still very good. I found my foot tapping throughout. Such a good voice
Good sounds. Play loud
This is one of those bands I've seen mentioned a lot but have never actually listened to. Pretty interesting album. I'd like to give it a few more listens, which may ultimately change my score, but I'll stick with 4 stars now. I thought Foreground (final track) was really good.
Faultless
An edgier sound to what I expected. Suits the scary album art. I liked the bluesy Student Demonstration Time but found parts of the album a bit dull. Solid 3.5 stars for me
Huh, turns out I know way more Little Richard than I realised. Decent. Made me wanna boogie.
