So this is what blues is.. Not too bad!
After a few listens it really starts to hit different, not sure I class it as rock but it has elements of it
No weak spots, just a good ol' album.

Great opening with beetlebum and song 02, but they do carry the album. Drops off slightly from there. Some gorrilaz vibes in the vocals and production on Theme from Retro and one other track I don't remember the name of.
Not bad, but not great. Light 3 from me.

Crazy that this is his 7th album and I'm only listening to him now properly for the first time. Easy to see why he's so iconic. Some great tracks and good album overall, but probably a bit too long.

My first foray into country music, and I can see the appeal.
He has a great voice, it's a chill, calming, poetic sound and I think it would be amazing to listen to live, in a country bar in Dallas.

To state the obvious, no matter how foreign an album sounds at the start, the more you listen, the better it gets, and none more so than this.

The band name and wikepedia description is a bit of a red herring, this is good listening and not what I expected at all.
Feeling a strong 3 to a light 4. Really wanna give it a 4 but will settle for 3.

Quite jarring on first listen, especially without context and when youre unsure what to expect. Second time round when I realised what the concept of a murder ballad is I found it quite amusing. It's weird and vulgar, and I probably won't listen to it again, but it's also kinda good?
Light 3 for me
Aside from the first 3 tracks, not a lot to like for me. but 3 good track is still at least 3 stars in my book.
OK monitor is a banger, and there's definitely more than just 3 good tracks on here, just not a real postpunk/goth rock kinda guy.

Was wondering when I'd get my first Bowie.
This is my first time listening to a David Bowie album and it's not at all what I expected, isn't David Bowie a generational pop/rock superstar?? Didn't he headline Glastonbury?
He barely speaks in the second half of this album, but for me it's the better half.. I don't think i've repeated a track more than Subterraneans so far on this journey.

What a fun album, amazing instrumental jazz funk vibes and good vocals too. Only 4 tracks but quite long and no filler.

Gimme this album as an instrumental and it's probably close to a 5. Paint it black and mother's little helper are saving graces

It's a bit meh, can't lie. Couple decent tracks but I feel like there is better Neil Young to be heard.

Starts very spacey and gorrilaz like, come together gives massive attack , then goes dark and orchestral and jazz like and ends a bit noisy and velvet undergroundy but a little more organised noise like as if there were 30 more years of musical advancement since velvet. Pretty good!

As my introduction to R.E.M, I appreciate it's a good album, but it seems like for a lot of people this album means a lot more to them than it means to me.

Was a little unsure about how I felt about this album in the end, but I think the A-Side is mostly pretty good, even the more whimsical and silly tracks like Octopus's Garden and Maxwells Silver Hammer.
The B-Side is obviously not as strong and imo a bit random but somehow still good, it is The Beatles I suppose. Deep down I want to give it a 3, but some of these hits are undeniable, so I'll give it a 4.

Love Radiohead and love this album, but admittedly, Thom Yorke does sound a little whiny and droney at times. Amazing album nonetheless, and bookended by some absolute bangers. Everything in it's right place being a contender for best opening track ever!!

This album is like a FIFA game soundtrack, but the songs that sort of just play in the background, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, they're just no Song 02, Jerk it out, Kids etc.
At the 11th hour, this went from a 2 to a 3.

I don't understand where some of the reviews for this album have come from. This is a really nice downtempo electronic album with some great soundscapes, vocals and elements of classical, jazz, soul and hip-hop. I genuinely feel like had this album had someone else's name on it who is more prominent, the reception in here would have been very different.
It's all in the first half though, second half is pretty unremarkable, but first half is good, Tides especially is some top tier stuff.
Reminded me of Talvin Singh - OK which i got a couple of days ago and won the mercury prize, but i really didn't rate that album, this is miles better.

Fully appreciate this album and Paul Simon's voice is goated and I love half the songs on this album, but it took some listening and the other half fell a little short for me and including the title track and I was gonna give this a 3 but somehow talked myself into a 4 and don't ask why.

As a first time listener, not just of this album, but of Prince as a whole, I really did not expect to enjoy this album THIS much. I'm a 90s kid so it was just before my time, and as I grew up a lot of my early music taste was consumed buy hip hop and rap. But coming back to this now, with a much wider appreciation for various genres, this was just something else, banger after banger after banger. Great opener, even greater finisher. Computer Blue maybe the only track that loses a point, but that's it. Unlike yesterdays Hendrix album, Axis: Bold as Love, here's an album that fully deserves it's place atop any of the top albums list.

This album is all over the place musically, I found myself physically frowning at some points while listening to it. Can't imagine anyone really liking this if they didn't already like it in their younger years. I thought the radiohead comparisons were lazy but no, it really does sound like a bad radiohead imitation attempt.

I can totally imagine how much this album would have slapped growing up in the 90s and 00s in the UK. It's an album of anthems, that I didn't fully appreciate until listening to it intentionally now. It's still just a 3.5 to me, but like i said, it would have been an easy 5 had I been born in England.
