Calibro 35 (caliber 35) is a cinematic funk Italian band formed in 2007 in Milan. The band has released seven albums and several movie soundtracks. Different songs from the band have been sampled into hip hop productions including Dr. Dre's "One Shot One Kill" and Jay Z's "Picasso Baby". The band started in 2007 when Italian producer Tommaso Colliva and guitarist Massimo Martellotta invited Enrico Gabrielli, Luca Cavina and Fabio Rondanini to what was supposed to be a five days long one-off studio project re-recording obscure music from Italian exploitation movie soundtracks.
Reviews
Great groovy (and a bit funky) album. Some instrumentals, some songs with vocals.
Well, another ambient, lounge music album that I can't rate equally as an album with music and lyrics like most on the lists, so there's not much to say other than that it's just okay.
This is some good solo-roadtrip music
Groovy beatz 👊
This was actually quite pleasant. Groovy and funky and some nice beats and riffs. Something I'd never heard of before, but a nice surprise.
It’s funky and unique. Yet also lacking that next level to really make me groove along. It’s like a movie soundtrack with no context. It’s fun at times but others it’s like why did they add lyrics here or why didn’t they add lyrics more. It’s an interesting album that’s easy and fun to listen to but not something I’d revisit. 5.9/10
I know it's really popular in some hip-hop/funk/whatever circles, but sampling ancient shit and adding beats... eh? Not my thing. It just comes out sounding all grimy and strange. I know they have ways of describing these beats in the UK - big beat or soemthing? I dunno. Whatever. Nothing against it, but it just doesn't move my dial at all. 2/5.
All-right album. Not really for me though. The raps are awesome, but the vibe is off. The cover is a damned masterpiece. 2
holy. shit. where has this been all my life? I don't even know how to classify this other than "transcendent"
Throughout the project, I’ve enjoyed becoming more familiar with other psych and dub projects – to hear a modern, polished LP that fuses those genres exceptionally is an absolute treat, and an unexpected surprise that honestly has made my day. This album feels at once structured and airtight while maintaining a sense of organic freedom, resulting in some exciting tracks that buck the norm of what you’re expecting while masterfully executing on the instrumental level. Could’ve done without the vocal elements here and there, but thankfully they don’t detract from the incredible melodic sense throughout this album. It’s funds like these that make this project worth it, amazing add to the list.
Was almost giving up on this list, then something like this which feels so classic but also so new. loved it.
This is a bit of a mix up, really. Most of the tracks are a confusion between two or more different things being played at the same time, and while I really didn't enjoy it to begin with, o have the feeling that it might grow on me.
Fun fact: 99% of 1001+ album listeners give up before discovering something with actual personality and passion. I am glad to be a part of that 1%. Okay, after perhaps a week or so of absolute sludge I got this to rekindle my interest in the user-submissions list. I don't think the original list would ever include an Italian cinematic funk album from the 2020's. It's not the greatest thing ever but it comes pretty close. five outta five
god damn that was fuckin fun I also listened to their Calibro 35 (Deluxe Edition) album and that was amazing as well - 10/10
I listened to this on repeat my entire work day.
Just... Cool music. Feels like it contains elements of trip hop, electronic rock, all wrapped up in a film score-style package. I don't think the ending track is the strongest closer, but fuck this is fun, so who cares. Favorite tracks: "Automata", "Fake It Til You Make It"
Cool vibes. Liked it.
I really liked this a lot. It hits its mark of evoking a certain kind of cinematic music. One small gripe is it came off for me a little too much like a soundtrack album - all the parts didn't quite come together as a coherent whole. But those parts are pretty sweet nonetheless.
This is very cool! I enjoyed it. Will listen again. 4 stars.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Death of storytelling, Black moon, 4x4
I 100% already listened to this and somehow it is here again which is okay because it rules
Super choice
Surprisingly cool and fun. Though Automata is a bit of a clunker, everything where there isn't a lyricist is absolutely vibey and cool. Fortunately only 2 tracks have rapping, and tracks like Death of Storytelling and Fail It Till You Make It are awesome.
This was a unique thing… who’d have thought a band would start by redoing Italian movie soundtracks. My parents were Ennio Morricone fans back in the day so I was around some of his soundtracks as a kid. I like this!
I liked this sound.
Well that was an interesting addition to the list. I can't say I'd listen to it all that often or it's particularly important to listen to but it was a pleasant listen. Agreed with others saying this is a soundtrack album and reading about the band they started as one who recorded soundtracks. That makes for easy listening but it's a curosity and not really that essential. My personal rating: 3.5/5 My rating relative to the list: 4/5 Should this have been included on the original list? No.
A quick jaunt with hints of experimental jazz. I enjoyed it.
Very cool. Glad to be exposed to some Italian funk. I like it and it’s very good, but I don’t think I can give a 5 as I don’t love it and it’s not quite great.
Reminds me of the Barry Adamson albums from the original list, but with more of a dub/trip hop flavor & less circus brass
Would class as background music but enjoyed it, nice vibe
A nice, chill, mostly instrumental album.
I am really glad someone added this to the list. I knew nothing about them but it grabbed me from almost the first note. Will definitely come back to hear more of their stuff. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the track that had a lot of vocals. Definitely preferred the instrumental tracks.
This is the best soundtrack style album I've heard on the list. It's a bit more fast paced and a bit harder than others, and has a distinct Mexican vibe. I liked it a lot.
You know what, you give me a modern funk band to review, and 9 times out of 10 I'm going to give it a positive review because I just love funk. This is one of those 9 times. This shit is solid and cinematic. It feels modern and classic at the same moment 4/5
This was very enjoyable. I wish there were more lyrics. Everything was really good. It occasionally piqued my interest in a way that was more than just recognizing that there’s music playing. Felt original at times, but mundane at others. Never got close to being unlistenable or even annoying. Quite a delight actually. 4/5
This is pretty much awesome - I'd never heard of Calibro 35 before and seeing them described as an "Italian cinematic funk band" I figured ... this could really go either way. I vastly prefer their instrumentals - not super down with the 2 rap interludes/songs; nothing inherently wrong with them but they just took me out of the album flow. Reminded me of a funkier and slightly more-gritty version of Air's excellent "Virgin Suicides" soundtrack. Yeah keeper for me and I might have loved to have this in the book, I think the uniqueness of it makes it worthy. 8/10 4 stars IMO: Belonged in the book? Yes
This was great. I still have no idea where they're from though.
Pretty cool, certainly different. A good user addition to the list. Rounding up for the album art.
this was very nice, thank you.
Favorite Track: Black Moon
Well that was better than I expected
I yoyo’d between enjoying and hating this album from track to track. It started okay then I didn’t love the rap stuff then it just became interesting instrumental contemporary funk stuff but there were still some annoying bits that kept me from really getting into it. I got a solo flea song once the album ended and I had no idea he made shit like this so that was pretty cool to hear.
I love the mood of this album. I do tend to favor the instrumentals over the tracks with vocals, which kind of break the vibe for me. Fave Songs: Death of Storytelling, Thunderstorms and Data, Fail It Till You Make It
Cinematic funk, jazz, alternative rock. Ni fu ni fa.
It was alright, but nothing particularly exciting.
I think I like it, but I'm not really sure. It certainly has the energy and is simply easy to listen to. But it ebbs in and ebbs out like a cat. I'm allergic to cats.
Vibey
I'd give this a 3.5. I love a good instrumental and this was pretty easy to listen to and enjoy.
I liked this- my kind of music. Having said that it's neither inspirational or groundbreaking so i've added them to my playlist but don't think they would qualify for 1001
A lot of foreign content on the user list. This was diverse and held my attention.
Cool, funky genre bender album. A bit hip hop too, I liked this one! 3.5/5
This was a fun one, kind of like Chromatics with some instrumental and others with vocals and some guests. Good beats and glad to see some Italian representation!
Found this grovey and cool, but just got a bit repetitive come the end. Worthy of its place on the list, but won’t rush back.
Remember that one weird fucking Barry Adamson album from the original list that was "a soundtrack for a detective movie that doesn't exist"? Sounds like if you took that and mixed it with a beat MF DOOM would use to rap about how he likes lasagna.
Un poco difícil de clasificar. Toques algo discotequeros, funky, sin prácticamente arreglos vocales, todo instrumentación (y variada). No se hace pesado de escuchar y es un tanto innovador
This had a good groove for sure. Different and interesting enough and not too long. Nice album to listen to on a weekend morning.
Funky, groovy, chill. Relatively enjoyable, but nothing out of this world. Could probably listen again.
Decent background music
Funky and enjoyable, with a Tortoise/Stereolab-ish kind of vibe at times, but definitely its own thing.
For each user submission I will decide if I believe it was submitted to "correct the record" and deserves inclusion on the main list or if its more of a personal favorite or pet album of the user. This I think was a pet album but it wasnt bad seemed almost like a score to a movie at times
more mass than velocity
An object barely in motion will remain so.
Funk, Rock, Jazz: Jazz Funk, Psychedelic Rock. Bien, sin más. Para escuchar.
Cinematic funk, jazz, alternative rock. Ni fu ni fa.
I’ve never heard of Calibro 35 before, but I hope that by the 35th Calibro, they’ll have things sorted out. I see that this is an Italian funk band, so I have no idea what to expect from this. Either way though, I’m sure this will be a unique experience. Overall, I’d say that this album was alright. The first two tracks on this album were not my speed at all, but once the album got to “Death of Storytelling,” it really picked up. When this album was its best, it was crafting some really dense and moody atmospheres that I really enjoyed. The guitars, bass, synths/keyboard, and drums all sounded really good together, especially from “Death of Storytelling” to “Thunderstorms and Data.” There wasn’t really any particular song that jumped out to me was my favorite; I didn’t find any of these songs to be earworms in a sense, but this album had plenty of songs that were pleasant to listen to, and I found myself drawn in by the rhythms here. The moodiness of these songs really tied the album together nicely. One of the things that made the best parts of this album work for me, was that the best songs all achieved their sense of atmosphere in different ways. It was enough variation to keep me interested, but not jarring enough to throw me off. In addition to the first two tracks, I didn’t care for “Black Moon” or “One Nation Under a Format” either. The vocals on those songs interrupted the flow of the album to me, and I would have preferred it to remain instrumental. The vocals and lyrics didn’t really add much to the album for me, and those songs made the album feel a bit uneven. I would still say that this album was a fun experience, and it was an interesting way to use funk influences.
This was certainly atmospheric and gave a lot of movie soundtrack music vibes. It wasn't amazing, but it was worth a listen for sure. Three stars.
Better then i was expecting. Blended into the background after a while.
I don't really understand what this is for or in what circumstance one would listen to it. Rating: 1.5 Playlist track: Glory-Fake-Nation Date listened: 21/12/24
Nonsense - like a soundtrack to a dull movie, with more instrumental tracks than actual songs. Works as a showreel for a producer, or as a sample bank for other artists, but not as a coherent collection of actual songs.
I saw “funk” and was immediately turned off.
Pleasant, but a bit too coffee table fancy chill out for me.
Momentum is an interesting enough album to add to the list because of what it tries to do, very little of what we've had really tries to fuse funk and electronica and hip hop and rock into one sound, and it does an okay job of it, just not well enough to consistently grab me. 2/5 but a higher 2.
I never thought about an album of samples (basically what it is). The concept is interesting, but the execution is not so enjoyable.
This sure is.
“Ah yes, finally some Italian instrumental funk”, said no one ever.
Italian funk music made for elevators. Not my cup of tea.
Well I liked like the first song and then I got really bored and didn’t like it. Idk. Pick up the pace or something?
It’s great that it’s been sampled by so many hip-hop illuminati, but by itself, it doesn’t rise above the level of background music to a hip international film festival for me. Sorry not sorry.
