Album Summary

The Ideal Crash is the third studio album by Belgian rock band dEUS, released in March 1999. The album was recorded in Spain, U.K. and Belgium and was mixed at Olympic Studios and includes the single "Instant Street", which became an underground hit in Europe. It was produced and mixed by David Bottrill. The Ideal Crash was the first dEUS album to be directly released through a major label (Island Records) but it's also the only dEUS album that didn't get a US release. The album cover art is the first dEUS CD cover that does not feature a painting by ex-guitar player Rudy Trouvé.

The Ideal Crash is an indie rock album by Belgian band dEUS. At the time this album was everywhere in The Netherlands. The songs "Sister Dew", "One Advice, Space" and "Instant Street" are fantastic. The other songs are good too. The album has a certain 1990s sound that some will dislike and I must say I like their earlier, more experimental work better.

Yeah, I quite like this. Let's add dEUS along with Plastic Bertrand and Stromae to the list of Belgians that are fun to hear.

These Scandinavian and European rock band sort of perplex me. This just sounds like fairly middle of the road American alt rock. What's the point of being Belgian? I guess its probably a smart business decision. Do they sing in Belgian for home concerts? (I know, I know, just kidding). It's decent, I didn't mind it, I just don't exactly get it.

This one didn't leave much of an impression, the LP dips its toes into several 90s' indie tropes with a slight grungey haze but doesn't do much to innovate or make those sounds their own. It was a decent listen, but not anything I would say is necessary to listen to before you die.

When *The Ideal Crash* came out in 1999, I first thought dEUS had lost too much if their zany edge. The sound of this record, also impacted by the first major line-up change in the Belgian band's history, is indeed more "accessible", maybe even streamlined to an extent. The thing is, the strength of the album's highlights made me return to it later on, and I now think the LP harbors a well-balanced collection of tracks, where the individual strength of the different songs is nearly distributed across the tracklist. To be fair, the cleaner production values now feel less like an impediment and more like an asset, allowing many details and arrangements to shine. Some of those angular, harmonically astute arrangements are simply extraordinary. They carry what are often very catchy tunes to another dimension, and it's maddening that so many reviewers in here can't perceive those arrangements for what they are. Your loss, you inattentive folks. And even if you don't go that deep into those details, five songs out of the ten presented here are absolute stand-out tracks anyway, not only for the album, but also for the band's whole discography. Those songs are the bipolar opener "Put The Kids Up Front", gently groovy yet also surprisingly poignant "Sister Dew", the jittery title-track exploring all sorts of off-kilter nooks and crannies, laidback-balladry-suddenly-goes-epic "Instant Street", with its intense build-up at the end, and the aptly-named "Everybody's Weird". The rest is admittedly a notch under that quality level (deep cuts in the two previous dEUS albums were certainly given a more "artistic" treatment, making them sound like more of a loony adventure than in here), yet they're still very good songs. Seeing how this record is unfairly maligned by a lot of users in my eyes, I'm even gonna push my grading to a 4.5 mark. This won't change the global score of this suggestion a bit, but at least it's gonna set the karmic balance right for me. To the user who suggested this, I've browsed through your galleries, and it seems we're like-minded music fans, at least when it comes to stuff already released when you and I were younger souls. Saw dEUS play live in my hometown in France ages ago, and I still remember to this day the insane version of "For The Roses" they performed there. Cheers! 4, maybe 4.5/5 for the purposes of this list dedicated to essential albums, bumped to a 5 9/10 for more general purposes (5 + 4), with a little nudge pushing it to my highest rated gallery. ---- Number of albums from the original list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 465 Albums from the original list I *might* include in mine later on: 288 Albums from the original list I won't include in mine: 336 ---- Number of albums from the users list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 83 (including this one) Albums from the users list I *might* select for mine later on: 104 Albums from the users list I won't select for mine: 212 ---- Émile, j'ai vu ta dernière réponse. Instant Street is a fantastic song. Altough I like dEUS, I never listened a full album of theirs. Some songs do seem to drag along just a bit too much.

Why is everyone hung up on these guys being Belgian? They sound a little ahead of their time: an alt or art rock midwest American band perhaps? Clever. I quite enjoyed this one although it's nothing too radical or outstanding for me.

Cool vibey Belgian indie rock that dips its toes into a weirder sound just a little bit. Big fan of that one instrument in a bunch of these songs that goes like "ooOooOoo". 'Tis fine. 3/5.

Points for a Belgian band...1st on the list? Ok. Now I've heard a Belgian band.

This was rough. I like the theory in concept but it's way too long. Every song felt way too long and lopping off 1-2 minutes from each would be a good edit. My personal rating: 2/5 My rating relative to the list: 2/5 Should this have been included on the original list? No.

Nobody needs an album this long, but especially for an artist new to them.

Happy to have the artist shared but this behemoth of an album not so much. Wound up bored and tired by the end.
