Ready To Die
The Notorious B.I.G.A lot of swearing and sex noises. Would never listen to this in public.
A lot of swearing and sex noises. Would never listen to this in public.
Quite a coincidence to get this album the day after Brian Wilson died. Good clean fun but not a lot of substance (edit - I see from the date that a lot of people got this today. I ainโt even mad). Right after this I was compelled to listen to R.E.M.'s Dead Letter Office. I had completely forgotten that the song ๐๐ฐ๐ช๐ค๐ฆ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ข๐ณ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ฅ also mentions a Ronda!
About halfway through this, I realized that the singer kind of sounded like Cookie Monster. Helped me get through it.
No question this lady has the pipes, but I didnโt like it one bit. Her vocal affectations and fake american accent drove me up the wall (huh-waaaaatah unda theh buh-reeeeeeeedge). Imagine lamenting about how your life is slipping away at age 25.
This gave me a funky afternoon. Glad the windows werenโt open when track 2 came on.
Very cool indeed, title does not lie.
A lot of swearing and sex noises. Would never listen to this in public.
LOVED IT brought back many memories and 90s feelings though I have never actually heard most of it before.
I heard more than enough of this in high school, but I suffered through the entire album anyway. Apart from the three hits, the tracks are completely indistinguishable. Each song sounds just like the last, and the lyrics are basic. I really donโt see how this belongs on any "best of all time" list. Glad to say I have now heard it for the first and last time.
I thought this was pretty good, but a bit disappointing as I was really looking forward to diving in -- a legendary band and one of the greatest singers of all time, but I haven't listened to them much apart from the few hits on the radio. The harmonies were outstanding, but a few of the songs were a bit silly. I guess I wasn't expecting as much camp, but I should have known better.
This album came out in 1972 (and so did I!) and I can appreciate it for what it is, but not quite my cup of tea. Many of the songs are a bit on the schlocky side (sorry, Stevie). But no denying this dude is a force of nature.
Great vibe for messing around in the kitchen and doing meal prep (not to mention, eating). Really appreciate that this guy changed jazz. Do not be fooled by the chicken-- this is not a country record.
I kind of felt "ok" about this one, but this is one of the records I'm going to give a second listen to see if anything sticks out to me. I had been looking forward to hearing Ambulance Blues, but it didn't really grab me.
Some music isn't for everyone, and maybe I'm one of those people this time. I will give it another listen, though, because it was actually starting to grow on me a bit by the end.
What is Green Onions? (4 seconds later) OH Ok background music for household chores but I canโt see myself seeking it out in the future unless I was having a themed party.
Honestly, for 1979 I didnโt find this as experimental or groundbreaking as I expected. Not nearly as weird as I had hoped.
This album gave me LIFE today
Quite tolerable. Good vibes for a Saturday afternoon.
I had no idea what this was all about and the cover art did not look promising, but I actually loved this album and was sad when it was over. Reminded me of Wilco and others. Shockingly modern sounding but released in 1976!?
A few tracks in the middle were kind of forgettable (which ones - I've already forgotten) but it was my first time hearing the album as a whole and I enjoyed the concept. I do expect to play it again, which is more than I can say for a lot of the albums I've listened to so far. Remember when Rosie couldn't understand how a record she had never heard of could win Best Album? Good times.
Ok, I guess. Kind of like a happier Rage Against the Machine. Not my cup of tea, but I appreciate the talent and the enthusiasm.
I canโt take it anymore. Itโs awful and it JUST NEVER ENDS.
Well look at Gordie McLightfoot over here... I have not had a lot of exposure to folk but I listened to this while working in my studio on a rainy afternoon and it couldn't have been more perfect.
Was ok. Great organ.
Really enjoyed. Sadly I hear he is not alive anymore.
Kinda fun, I didnโt mind it.
Having this album come up was like seeing an oasis while crawling through the desert. After 21 weird picks, I so earned this.
WTF, where has this guy been all my life? I feel like this album dropped from space straight onto my eardrums. Instant add to my playlist.
Throwing in the towel after three tracks. Dull, dated, bland. I just canโt do this today.
About halfway through this, I realized that the singer kind of sounded like Cookie Monster. Helped me get through it.
Not what I expected - kind of liked it. Little stories and vignettes. Still, I canโt see myself listening to it again.
This gave me a funky afternoon. Glad the windows werenโt open when track 2 came on.
Kind of reminded me of Supertramp a bit? Well anyway, it didnโt really grab me.
Just... ok. First time listening to Oasis voluntarily and I find it all sounded the same after a while.
Music was kinda ok, kept waiting for a more upbeat song and it just never came. After reading the band's bio I was definitely not expecting strings and vibraphone. Giving a second listen (with headphones) because technically I should like this and I feel like I'm missing something.
Glad to finally dig in to the Cohen catalogue. The lyrics are exceptional but I canโt imagine Iโll be adding it to my workout playlist.
Cover - kinda grungy looking lady w grungy text Inside - fairly bland pop music Just didn't grab me
Liked it, no notes.
I love classic rock but these guys for some reason have always rubbed me the wrong way.
Really enjoyed this, great vibes for my afternoon. I have never listened to them before. Had to laugh when I realized that the closest they came to profanity was "nincompoop" ๐
I always had this idea I wasn't crazy about "earlier" Radiohead but this was very solid and I listened to it twice. You can definitely hear OK Computer coming down the pipe.
I have heard of the band, but TBH none of these songs sounded familiar at all. None of them grabbed me-- very generic sounding to my ears.
This album was transformational when I was 14. Still holds up nearly 40 years later (!) There's a Light has to be one of their greatest songs, if not the *the* greatest.
Admittedly, I don't know much about this guy. I am familiar with at least one of his songs (Moon dance?) and it was not on this album. However, I patiently listened to all 90+ minutes and can now confidently say I do not care for Van Morrison. He did have a very good band/orchestra, and I am happy to report that "Terry Adams on cello" is still alive and well. Go Terry!
At first: hmm that one guy kind of sounds like Rod Stweart Later: eww it IS Rod Stewart Overall bad, but track 2 was kind of funny.
Hey, I actually loved this... perfect for my morning workout. I would probably give it a 3.5, but rounding up to 4 as I ended up listening to it twice.
YAY MY FIRST ZEPPELIN This isn't in my top 3, but solid album. Did I listen to it 3x today? Maybe... headphones, speakers, headphones again
Patiently listened to the whole thing. Did not care for it. It was just... silly. No substance. I was thinking this was almost surely one of the albums I heard the counsellors playing at summer camp when I was 11 or 12.
I was kind of looking forward to this, looks weird. But unfortunately it wasnโt interesting/cool weird it was just โฆ uncomfortable weird. โขย sitar โข harmonica โข harpsichord โข recorder โข tin whistle โข kazoo โข possibly box with rubber bands (?) โขย hurdy gurdy (?) โข rambling lyrics that are possibly being made up on the spot โขย bad singing Normally some of these CAN be acceptable in a recording (with the exception of the kazoo), but all at once? Intolerable. The fact that this made it onto any best of all time list is puzzling to say the least.
I admit I haven't thought much about Beck, ever. I liked it, but didn't love it. Very midtempo throughout, quite depressing, but some very nice string arrangements.
Dumb guitar fun. Blessedly brief.
Never heard of these guys, and I can see why. Kind of forgettable 70s music. Did get slightly better whenver they added horns. Essential listening... Nah.
I had mixed feelings about this. I SHOULD like it. Indeed, I *tried* to like it. But mostly I didn't. So much screaming.
I don't know what space rock is, but it was pretty ok. Lyrics nothing to write home about. Nice string arrangements when available.
Reminded me of another band, couldn't quite put my finger on it.
Wanted to like it. A lot of pretentious dgaf decisions like allowing some guy to talk over almost every trackโฆ bit of a head scratcher.
No question this lady has the pipes, but I didnโt like it one bit. Her vocal affectations and fake american accent drove me up the wall (huh-waaaaatah unda theh buh-reeeeeeeedge). Imagine lamenting about how your life is slipping away at age 25.
Better than I expected, tbh. The song Red Telephone had some rather timely lyricsโฆ ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ๐บโ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ญ๐ฐ๐ค๐ฌ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ๐ฎ ๐ถ๐ฑ ๐ต๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ข๐บ ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ๐บโ๐ณ๐ฆ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐ข๐ธ๐ข๐บ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐บ ๐ ๐ธ๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ฆ๐ณ ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ฐ ๐ช๐ต ๐ธ๐ช๐ญ๐ญ ๐ฃ๐ฆ ๐ต๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ณ๐ณ๐ฐ๐ธ - ๐ ๐ฐ๐ถ ๐ฐ๐ณ ๐ฎ๐ฆ?
Oh no. I was in high school when this came out and it was everywhere, but I really donโt care for Bonoโs voice and U2 in general. Iโm giving it 3โญ๏ธ for the sheer number of massive hits. PS I did buy the album WAR in grade 7 because I liked the song New Yearโs Day (still do).
Delicious. I feel like Mr Rogers, SimCity, etc. in my formative years primed me to like jazz. For a few minutes I kept hearing plates and glasses clinking and got paranoid that someone was in my house. Paused the recoding to listen and realized It was just the sound of people in this club eating ๐
Not amazing, but good fun. I have heard of the band but none of these songs sounded at all familiar.

It was ok. Never did care much for Prince when this was very popular but it has aged fairly well and I even added When Doves Cry to my workout playlist as the bpm is a pretty rapid 125.
Ok, but I found myself frequently zoning out. It was quite silly at times-- eg. some song about how cool it is to be a wolf, and a USSR diss track.
Was ok. Even recognized a few songs.
Had a S&G "greatest hits" CD in my teens that contained a lot of these songs. Almost all remain straight up bangers, though the title track seems a little cringy to me now. In any case, the kind of album you can listen to on a road trip with your sister and mum with no complaints.
Wow! This was weird. More art than music. I appreciate that these dudes did whatever they wanted and didn't care what anybody thought. Get it boys.
Interesting to see some country guys with some political views but not fond of the genre at all. A few songs that got kind of grunge I did appreciate.
Ok. Not my thing. The occasional clever turn of phrase made me say "oh, nice one" but in honesty by track 7 or 8 all I could think about was the music I'd rather be listening to.
I admit I have not had much exposure to Bowie so I don't know how this compares to his other stuff. I liked it though, kinda jazzy. RIP.
It was a real struggle to get through this. Almost unlistenable, though I did hear a bit of Radiohead in it.
Fun, for country. I had an ok time.
Weird and fun. Opportunities to lean new languages as well.
Ok, I guess. Some decent/unexpected arrangements with horns and flute and whatnot, but I definitely could have died without hearing this. I got sick of the singer's baby voice quite quickly.
First time hearing this album -- better than 3 so bump it to 4 1979 was a wild and crazy year for music
I found this whole album quite meh, and it went on much too long. I have always hated the song about the devil for its irritating and endless "hoo-hooooo" backing n vocals.
Liked it... rockabilly / punk with a hint of Donnie and Marie.
Started out ok, kinda country-punky, but it got old fast and soon I couldn't wait for it to be over. The only song I considered above average was Whiskey Woman.
I have never listened to this album, though practically everyone I knew in '92 was obsessed with it. A couple of the tracks were somewhat forgettable, but as a debut album this is top notch. I would give it a 3.5 but will generously round it up to 4. I have had such a run of mediocre albums in a row, this was a breath of fresh air.
Practically unlistenable. At 35 minutes, still way too long.
Not my usual, but nice.
Sweet memories of high school and seeing Laser Floyd at the planetarium.
Generally I liked it. Their harmonies are great and the sound is quite timeless (though a little too close to country for me). I was surprised to find I already knew several of the songs. ๐๐ฐ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ด๐ต๐ฐ๐ค๐ฌ sounded depressingly optimistic considering the current times. :P
Wow havenโt listened all the way through this in ages. Quite a ride.
Was ok. Started to zone out a bit when it all started sounding the same after a while.
I generally like OMD, but this didn't really wow me. I feel that it was definitely ahead of its time so I will give it another listen. Appreciated the Mellotron.
Liked this a lot. 1978!!
Interesting. Not amazing, but pretty good. This is the kind of thing I get most excited about with this project - diving into a band I 100% never heard of.
Fairly pleasant, nothing too weird. But really quite bland. Thinking back, I canโt remember a single track. Nothing stood out, and I couldnโt even identify anything that might have been a single. *shrug*
It was ok. A lot of it I wouldn't listen to again.
I dont really have much to say. A man was singing. It was ok.
This started slow but really grew on me. The song about getting a maid was weird, but when the orchestra stuff hit, I was 100% on board.
This boring-ass music is why people followed a band around as their full time job? I don't get it. Incredibly underwhelming.
It didnโt really grab me, but Iโm feeling like I missed something so Iโll listen again and (if PJ is lucky) upgrade my rating.
Got through this by thinking about what I would listen to when I was done.
This was probably great music for dancing, but tbh quite a boring listen while, say, decluttering your spare bedroom on a Sunday afternoon. Many of the songs just go on and on (and on).
I needed some soul today! Went down smooth.
I guess it was the right time and the right place to get this album today... I was out walking in the rain at 5pm after an almost 2-wk dry spell. It hit just perfectly.
Ok I guess. Got annoying after a while.
Two albums by these guys in a weekโฆ this one wasnโt any better, Iโm afraid. Fine for dancing probably, but not so much for listening.
Enjoyed this while cooking with my son. Chill afternoon.
loved it, no notes
At first I was like oh boy, a classic album I've never heard and genuinely curious about. I became so weary of the album, imagine my surprise when I discovered I still had 14 tracks to go. There were some good songs on here, but honestly as an outside observer who is pretty neutral about the Beatles, I feel like they were way too high on their own supply at this point. If you cut out the nonsense It could have been an EP.
I liked this, great lyrics that still resonate today.
Album #100! I really liked this one. Have to give it โโโโ for its wordplay, accessibility, and overall good vibes. A little jazzy, a little funky, deft use of samples -- pure enjoyment. As promised, they gave me something I ain't used to.
It was ok. A bit over the top for my tastes.
God, the cover is so ugly. Album was ok, but I didnโt like it as much as Fear of a Black Planet which was one of the first albums of this project. Heard before: no Listen again: maybe
I was too old for this in 1994, and *way* too old for it now. No punk I know considers this punk. Apart from the 2-3 obvious hits, not much to write home about. But I will probably bump it up to a 3 because those hits were massive in their day. Listened before: no Listen again: also no
Kinda pretentious, but I liked this. In my Goldilocks zone of weird but not too weird. Listened before: no Will listen again: probably
This wasโฆ not great. Apart from three (entirely unnecessary) iterations of the one hit, the rest of the album was really nothing to write home about.
I loved every minute of this. So much variety and not a bad track in the bunch. A little jazzy, a little funky, even a little thrashy (and Buddhist monks?? Why not!) Was going to give it 4 stars butโฆ tbh itโs one of the few albums in this project that made me say, "I hope itโs not over yet." Listened before: no Listen again: already did!
Ok. Very long. Not my cuppa tea.
Iโm not sure why I always thought these guys were a country music outfit. Must have had it mixed up with some other band made of last names. In any case, I was initially surprised and pleased that it was NOT country, and had a fresh jangly sound like early R.E.M. or the Go-Goโs. Some toe-tappers for sure. However, the singerโs bleating goat voice began to grate on me by track 2, and I soon found myself skipping songs halfway through. An acquired taste I did not acquire. And not for lack of tryingโฆ I *wanted* to like it. I will not be listening again, but it gets a 3.
I am aware of the Cure obviously, but never actually listened to them on purpose. I enjoyed this album very much, but thought a lot of it all had the same dreary sound with not a lot of variety. Nevertheless, this is very very Cure. They have such a distinctive sound. Listened before: no Listen again: very likely
Ok, but walking dangerously close to the line between mellow and dull.
Really loved this today.
It was ok. The screaming became tiresome.
Enjoyed. One thing I like about Punk is that the songs are short.
Not for me. Went on and on, every track the same. My son loved it, though. DNF.
Ehh. Didnโt care for it. Very silly.
Not bad. Weird fun.
Hmm... didn't hate it, but a bit corny for my liking.
Silly
Nah, sorry Femi but this just sounded like bland generic music youโd hear in a restaurant or maybe on the radio in the Sims 1. I can see them all with their little arms in the air saying woooooo
Hey, enjoyed it more than I expected. Listened to the lyrics and was genuinely surprised. eg. the title track used to make me cringe as a non-american tween/teen but it is not what it seems.
Was not expecting this. Also I think I always had these guys confused with Earth, Wind and Fire. Kinda jazzy, very eclectic. liked it ok.
Better than the last one, bump it up to 4.
I kind of enjoyed this tongue in cheek country.
