Popular Reviews

Fever To Tell by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

This is nearly unlistenable. A struggle to get through. After listening to 60 albums I found 3 or 4 surprises. Good ones. This is a bad surprise. Literally nothing redeeming about this one. Blahhhhhhh

A Love Supreme by John Coltrane

Not your normal jazz session. It’s momentous. Fantastic music. Not much else I can say.

1-Star Albums (7)

All Ratings (114)

Pearl by Janis Joplin
May 15 2025

It’s good. It’s not great. But….That voice is amazing. By far the best song here is Me & Bobby McGee. Janis could have gone this route country wise. It’s a shame. The album starts of strong, but these are not that different from her earlier stuff. That said, it’s still 4 stars for her voice and the three standout songs.

Moon Safari by Air
May 16 2025

Pleasant enough. Meandering. Instrumentals ok. Not really my thing but I get it

Tres Hombres by ZZ Top
May 17 2025

Strong album, and a solid album. But 4 of the songs really stand out and there are a few mediocre tracks, keeping this one at the four star level. ZZ has a sound of their own and it’s pretty great.

Private Dancer by Tina Turner
May 18 2025

80’s production sounds and stuck in its time. Not very modern. That said, Tina Turner has a phenomenal singing voice, elevating mediocre material. Highlights. The hit What’s love got to do with it. Private dancer, the Mark Knopfler written song, Better be good to me. When the material is good, it’s good. When it’s mediocre, it lands a bit flat. Highly overrated. 3 stars. Would give it 2.5 if I could.

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
May 19 2025

It’s a classic. Pretty much perfect start to finish. Not much I need to add

Marquee Moon by Television
May 20 2025

It’s 1977. That’s important. But this is not punk. It has punk ethos. But these guys are impressive and talented instrumentalists. This is a very influential album. The twin guitar work influenced Wilco, a lot. But how are the songs? They are decent. It’s not my favorite. It’s also tough to get past Tom Verlaines vocals. That said, the music is very good. The guitars are great. So I’m torn. I am not gonna play this one for fun. It’s an album critics loved. I’m going with three stars because they are great players. Docked a star for average vocals and non memorable songs. Highlights are See no evil and Marquee Moon

Licensed To Ill by Beastie Boys
May 21 2025

Using Zeppelin samples and guitar licks, the Beastie boys first official album is carefully crafted and catchy. They would take sampling to another level with Paul’s Boutique, their next album which sold a lot less, but is considered a classic and also is the precursor to sample copyright laws.

Mask by Bauhaus
May 22 2025

I don’t care how influential a band is. This is awful. Kick in the eye 2 is the only decent song otherwise this would be a zero for me. Hated it.

The Renaissance by Q-Tip
May 25 2025

This was an eye opener. Wow. This is a fantastic album. Lots of soul, organic funky beats and original hip hop. Man I’m impressed. Easy 5 stars. This is why I am listening to 1001 albums, otherwise I would never have heard this.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple
May 26 2025

Intense album. Super angry. Melodic here and there. Very creative. Important question though. Will I put this back on again for a relisten? The album is melodic in fits and starts. Tracks 2-6 are surprisingly melodic. While 1 and 7 could use a melody or two. This is not easy listening music. Of course we get track 8 which is catchy after the monotony of track 7. All told, Fiona Apple has her own sound, and she’s very talented. I enjoyed this. But I can’t see me listening to this ever for fun. 3.8 stars

Melodrama by Lorde
May 27 2025

It’s good. You can hear a Kate Bush influence in places. A bit much of the Antiniff touch, but it stands up on its own. Needed a few listens to like this one. 3.75 stars.

Rock 'N Soul by Solomon Burke
May 28 2025

I enjoyed it. Some solid songs. But not essential by any means.

Tellin’ Stories by The Charlatans
May 30 2025

Pretty good. Have not heard this before. A bit derivative but worth a listen.

Step In The Arena by Gang Starr
Jun 01 2025

Very good. Will need another listen but old school funky soul rap

Jun 02 2025

Nice. I heard this album years ago and forgot about it. Very original and melodic. Could use a few more actual choruses but the sound textures are pretty great.

Joan Armatrading by Joan Armatrading
Jun 03 2025

A grower. Listened to it twice. Great focus and solid songwriting. Second side in my opinion much better than first side. 3.75 stars

Apocalypse Dudes by Turbonegro
Jun 04 2025

It’s fun. They can play. It’s goofy. But some nice riffs. 3.4 stars.

All Hope Is Gone by Slipknot
Jun 05 2025

It seems very commercial as far as slipknot goes. I don’t know their other stuff but it’s not bad. 3 stars

Os Mutantes by Os Mutantes
Jun 06 2025

4 stars for originality and musicianship.

2112 by Rush
Jun 07 2025

Side 1 is a solid 5 stars. Great comcept song with multi parts. Melodic and instrumentally virtuosic and catchy. Side 2 dips a little. Bangkok , twilight zone excellent tunes and lessons also good, tears is just ok. Something for nothing is very good as well. I will give this 5 stars. But a 5 star album should not have any mediocre tracks. If this was on a scale of 10 it would be a 9. I give it 4.6.

Shalimar by Rahul Dev Burman
Jun 08 2025

This is schlocky and awful. 70s drivel. Some redeeming qualities, but overall unlistenable.

Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel
Jun 10 2025

Bit disjointed of a concept album. But America, Mrs Robinson. Makes any album great. Plus, everything else is really good anyway. 4.5 stars

Headquarters by The Monkees
Jun 11 2025

Not very good. All music gives this 4.5? Seriously wow. Maybe 4 decent songs on album, a few written by Nesmith, one decent Tork tune and a decent Dolenz tune. Bland unoriginal pop 2.1 stars .

The Scream by Siouxsie And The Banshees
Jun 12 2025

Pretty good. Not really my style. But the musicianship is excellent and there are some very good songs. 3.5 stars

Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys
Jun 13 2025

It’s everything they say it is. But, as inventive and melodic as it is, it still lacks those songs that are ear worms. I’m sorry, if rubber soul is a 5, this is not a 5. I will give it 4.4.

Wild Is The Wind by Nina Simone
Jun 14 2025

Great voice. Some songs are great. Some average.

Metal Box by Public Image Ltd.
Jun 16 2025

Meh

Queen II by Queen
Jun 17 2025

Super ambitious and proggy. Love this album. Never heard any of it before. 4.5

Back At The Chicken Shack by Jimmy Smith
Jun 18 2025

Solid blue note early 60s jazz. Nothing mind blowing, but between the great organ comping, Turrantines sad and Kenny Burrells guitar, this is elevated to another level.

Fuzzy Logic by Super Furry Animals
Jun 19 2025

I don’t know. It’s ok. Nothing special here. A few good songs. Trying too hard

Low-Life by New Order
Jun 20 2025

I never understood this stuff. Bad singing. Not much in terms of dynamics or melodies. As a musician, I’m not impressed. Amateur crap

Jun 21 2025

Pretty solid. Could do without a few of these songs. Pretty tough in spots but no denying Cobains songwriting skills.

It's Too Late to Stop Now by Van Morrison
Jun 22 2025

Fantastic album. Crack live band. VAN THE MAN. what a find. I was not aware of this great live album.

Here's Little Richard by Little Richard
Jun 23 2025

It’s stunning and powerful and so influential. That said, too many sax solos. lol.

Ill Communication by Beastie Boys
Jun 24 2025

Beastie boys supremely talented. They are very good at what they do and that including actually playing their instruments. The album is funky and catchy and the instrumentals are placed just right and are worthy in their own right. These guys were geniuses.

Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones
Jun 25 2025

Can you give an album 6 stars? Damn. Stones at the top of their game. Amazing album.

Welcome To The Pleasuredome by Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Jun 26 2025

What is the point of this album and why is it on this list. Because Trevor Horn is talented? No consistency here, and just a lot of 80s programming and garbage writing. A few decent tracks. Admittedly. I like welcome to the pleasuredome and relax. You can keep the rest. 2 stars because it’s not completely worthless

Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt
Jun 27 2025

At first listen, I was driving and it annoyed the hell out of me. Tried again but didn’t get it. Gave it another chance. With headphones. So it’s definitely not for everyone. But it’s growing on me. But still, I don’t think I will be coming back to it. It has some nice prog, but so much noodling and meandering. I tried.

Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park
Jun 28 2025

It’s ok. I can get into some songs. But it’s not my favorite. 2.8

Bongo Rock by Incredible Bongo Band
Jun 30 2025

Yes, too many bongos. But it’s fun in places and it grooves. 3.5. Could be either 3 or 4. I’m going with 4 today. Tomorrow could be 3.

Jul 01 2025

Well, I’m a big Dylan fan so of course this is going to get 5 stars. But really, such a sound if its own. No one sounded like this then or now. Incredible lyrics, catchy rhythmic songs. Who finishes an album with its alright ma and it’s all over now baby blue. That’s insane. 10 stars.

Foo Fighters by Foo Fighters
Jul 02 2025

Solid self made album. Catch melodies. Proved himself a major talent right off the bat. So impressed by this. Will need to check out more foo fighters.

This Is Fats Domino by Fats Domino
Jul 03 2025

Difficult to find this one. Used playlist on Spotify. Just amazing stuff. Fats was awesome.

3 Feet High and Rising by De La Soul
Jul 04 2025

It’s better than I expected. I’m getting a whole education in 80s and 90s hip hop. It’s fun and funky. I have a little issue with some of the samples. Would be better if they were less obvious. But overall a fun listen.

Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones
Jul 05 2025

There is no one that sounds like the Stones. Utterly original. Their blues and their country sounds like only them. And it’s amazing how good the songs are. Ridiculous album. This started a great run of classic albums. Highly recommended!

Slanted And Enchanted by Pavement
Jul 06 2025

Not really my thing, but I can see the influence and the style.

Le Tigre by Le Tigre
Jul 07 2025

It’s decent. Some songs are very good. Others not. Inventive and catchy in places. Annoying and grating in others. So 3 stars.

Tracy Chapman by Tracy Chapman
Jul 08 2025

Fast car is an excellent song. The rest here suffers from sameness. It’s a bit of a bore. I respect the message and her vocals. But it doesn’t do much for me unfortunately.

Goodbye And Hello by Tim Buckley
Jul 13 2025

It’s fine. Likely polarizing. I don’t love it but I could grow to like it more. Great vocals. Creative chords and melodies. Pretty dated though.

Blue by Joni Mitchell
Jul 14 2025

Love this album. But not my favorite Joni. That’s Court and Spark, a more mature album. Highlights for me, this flight tonight, California, Tiver, my old man and Carey. Almost perfect, but not quite there. 4.8

Moving Pictures by Rush
Jul 15 2025

The first 4 songs of this album are unreal. What a start to the album. The last three songs are solid. This is a classic. I grew up with these songs and they do not get old. Easy 5 stars.

The Yes Album by Yes
Jul 16 2025

I am a huge yes fan. And this album is fantastic. Incredibly original. Amazing musicianship. Best Yes album after Close to the edge. Starship trooper. Cmon. Sick. Yours is no disgrace!! Saw Jon Anderson and the geeks recently. Both songs were performed and were fantastic. One of my favorite albums of all time. 5 stars plus.

Fever To Tell by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Jul 17 2025

This is nearly unlistenable. A struggle to get through. After listening to 60 albums I found 3 or 4 surprises. Good ones. This is a bad surprise. Literally nothing redeeming about this one. Blahhhhhhh

A Love Supreme by John Coltrane
Jul 19 2025

Not your normal jazz session. It’s momentous. Fantastic music. Not much else I can say.

Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix
Jul 21 2025

It’s hard to rate one of the greatest albums of all time. All I can say is nothing sounded like this before Jimi. This was hugely influential and still kicks ass today. People complaining about jamming? Cmon. There is so much quality songwriting here it’s unreal. Not easy to mix jamming in like this and it’s not too much at all. It’s a work of pure genius. Although, little kiss strange kinda sticks out like a sore thumb.

3 + 3 by The Isley Brothers
Jul 22 2025

I like it a lot. Too many covers though. Although summer breeze is quite nice. I’ll be looking at other Isley brothers albums for sure. Funky and soulful.

Heaven Or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins
Jul 23 2025

Lots of talent here. I liked cherry-colored funk but it’s pretty much goes downhill from there. Too much of the same thing going on. It’s not bad, it’s just not my thing.

Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath
Jul 24 2025

It’s heavy. Almost a 5 star album. But I’ve heard the next few albums and they are better.

G. Love And Special Sauce by G. Love & Special Sauce
Aug 06 2025

Back in the day I thought some of this stuff was good. Maybe some of the later stuff. s far as this album goes, it’s funky, but annoying. Blah.

The Suburbs by Arcade Fire
Aug 07 2025

Not much hope going into it and it’s actually quite good. A little inconsistent. But what works really works well. 3.8 stars.

The New Tango by Astor Piazzolla
Aug 08 2025

Makes me sleepy. And I love jazz. Just not very invigorating

Urban Hymns by The Verve
Aug 09 2025

Bittersweet Symphony overshadows everything here. Generally pleasant stuff, nothing I would go back to. But symphony is a classic.

Odelay by Beck
Aug 10 2025

Do I need to listen to an album I’ve heard 30 times? It was groundbreaking and fun. Years later it’s still awesome. Beck super talented. Great album.

Fever Ray by Fever Ray
Sep 07 2025

Hey. You can make me listen to this garbage. I still have control.

Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth
Sep 08 2025

It’s good as far as the things go. I could do without some of the songs. But overall pretty impressed. 3.85

Sea Change by Beck
Sep 09 2025

Haven’t listened to this in a while. I liked it better years ago. Too samey now. But it’s still real good. Just more kike a 3.75

Bryter Layter by Nick Drake
Sep 10 2025

Nick Drake. He had that thing. Not many musicians have it. But he did. Like many great artists, he suffered during his life. And you can hear it in his music. One of the things first is in my opinion a masterpiece. It’s not a perfect album. But the majority of this album is fantastic. 5 stars. Without question. So original.

Juju by Siouxsie And The Banshees
Sep 11 2025

Very good songs and diverse instrumentation. Liked this more than I thought I would.

Clandestino by Manu Chao
Oct 02 2025

Not for me. Not terrible though

Actually by Pet Shop Boys
Oct 03 2025

It’s fine. Not my thing. But good for what it is. 2.75

Oct 04 2025

Mostly superb. Agree with other comments on schmaltzy background vocals on many tracks, but it’s old records. So I have to dock it a star for that. Otherwise it’s pretty great all around. Great singing. Great piano playing and great charts.

Oct 05 2025

I enjoyed it. But it does not have enough disparity in sound to be something I go back to. There are definitely 3 or 5 standout songs. So I give it 3.75

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin
Nov 06 2025

Zep 1. Easy 5 stars.

Gold by Ryan Adams
Nov 07 2025

Super talented dude. It’s too long but there’s much to like here. And a few klonkers. 3.75

Nov 08 2025

Seriously hate this dude. Crazy ass mf. That said, This is the first Kanye album I’ve listened to. Damn. Melodic, creative, inspiring and not as repetitive as so much modern hip hop. 4.5 stars

The Coral by The Coral
Nov 10 2025

It’s fine. Nothing special. A few cool songs. Not for me but I’ll give it 3

Out Of The Blue by Electric Light Orchestra
Jan 22 2026

It’s a lot of music and it’s brilliant. Not perfect but amazing just the same.

I See A Darkness by Bonnie "Prince" Billy
Jan 23 2026

Grower. At first I was like wtf is this. Then I kinda like d it.

The Köln Concert by Keith Jarrett
Jan 24 2026

He is insanely confounding. Improvised. Wow. Love it.

16 Lovers Lane by The Go-Betweens
Jan 25 2026

All music gives this 5 stars. Cmon now

Jan 26 2026

Yeah. So this is raw. This is dynamic and just so damned real. Rods voice is insane and all the songs are fantastic. This one is better than I remembered it and I’m gonna come back to it. Love it.

All Directions by The Temptations
Feb 27 2026

Very good. A couple of songs I would skip

If You Can Believe Your Eyes & Ears by The Mamas & The Papas
Feb 28 2026

I don’t know. Two classics. Some decent songs. Some fluff. 3 stars for reminding me of the Brady bunch.

Murmur by R.E.M.
Mar 01 2026

First two thirds are spot on. Lags a bit towards the end. But being their first real album and sounding and being totally original, you have to give it props. I’m going 4.5 here Some great music

Faith by George Michael
Mar 02 2026

The dude was talented. He could write catchy music and there’s catchy stuff here. It’s also mindless. That said I give it 3.49

Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens
Mar 03 2026

So there are 3 stand out tunes. Wild world alone makes this 4 stars. This would be better with tighter arrangements and a better band. But it’s still good. I can’t see going back to listen other than the three or 4 songs though.

I’m a big Dylan fan. But I wouldn’t rate it5 stars if it didn’t deserve it. This is an important show. The acoustic stuff from the yet to be released blonde in blonde is amazing. The electric set is just great. Give it a chance. This was hugely influential onnthe rock world. 6 stars

Foxbase Alpha by Saint Etienne
Mar 05 2026

This is awful. And you start the album off with a really bad Neil Young cover. I could not get through this. I’m not gonna torture myself.

OK by Talvin Singh
Mar 26 2026
Purple Rain by Prince
Mar 27 2026

Ok. Ok. I was standing on my deck outside my house with this cassette tape. I hated modern pop like this. I was young. I pulled out the tape and destroyed it. Felt good. Probably 40 years later now. Prince is gone. I recognize his talent But this album. It’s fine. There are three fantastic songs. Then there is some filler. And a few other decent songs. It’s creative. The guitar playing is great. This is not a five star album. I will have to go with 4. Purple rain alone. But those filler songs really drag this one down.

Eliminator by ZZ Top
Mar 28 2026

Have to review this understanding what you’re listening to. It’s blues rock 4 on the floor with boogies and shuffles thrown in. It’s not lyrically deep stuff. It’s just rock and roll. It’s well done but samish. Which most ZZ Top is. Billy gibbons is the star here. And his guitar playing is stellar and soulful. I grew up with this stuff on mtv. 3.75 thanks to gibbons brilliance. And its sounds pretty modern too

Sex Packets by Digital Underground
Mar 29 2026

It’s fun. Good mix of beats and old school hip hop. Doesn’t hold up in the modern era but it’s fun and funky

Crazysexycool by TLC
Mar 30 2026

Not my thing. I was in my early 20s when this came out and waterfalls is good. Other stuff is ok. Very samey

Mar 31 2026

I believe this was 9th grade for me. I knew a guy who was obsessed with u2. I recall owning this on cd. But it’s another one of those albums I never listened to all the way through. The first 5 songs are very good. From there it’s just ok. Lanois is a huge part of this record in many ways, just watch the documentary in the making of the album. I’m torn between 3 or 4 stars because it’s obviously u2 at their peak and it’s well done. I’m going with 3.5 which will push it to 4. But I’m my heart I lean more to 3.

Transformer by Lou Reed
Apr 03 2026

Fantastic album. The classics are great. The lesser songs complement the classics. The lyrics are great. He was never better

A Girl Called Dusty by Dusty Springfield
Apr 04 2026

Great voice. I know a few other songs. It’s a bit long but the Bacharach songs are great as are some others. I would not go out of my way to listen though 3.4

Psychocandy by The Jesus And Mary Chain
Apr 10 2026

I liked it. I get what they’re doing and the melded rule the day for me. Always. Still. 3 meh songs. So 4 stars

Aja by Steely Dan
Apr 11 2026

Hilarious when people say it has no edge groove or soul. Wtf. It has all that and more. Creativity. Originality. Chords used in a way others couldn’t dream of. And it’s catchy. And flawless. What they don’t get I get.

Who's Next by The Who
Apr 12 2026

This is without a doubt one of the great classic rock albums of all time. Each member of the group is firing on all cylinders all the time. Everything works. Some reviews say the album is weaker in the middle. That’s ridiculous. When you have songs like baba, bargain and won’t get fooled again and behind blue eyes, which are great great tunes, what do you think is gonna happen? All great albums have great songs and songs slightly less great. That’s not unusual. But my wife and going mobile and the song is over are incredibly good. This is easily in my top 15 albums of all time and never gets old. Townshend is a songwriting genius at the top of his form here. But it’s not just that. The use of synths was groundbreaking. Keith Moon and John Entwhistle are killing it on every track. This is so damned original but it’s been played so much on the radio that I think people take the greatness for granted. This one is a perfect album. There aren’t many.

Fifth Dimension by The Byrds
Apr 13 2026

It’s fine. It’s The Byrds. Not blown away by but the stuff that is good is really good. 3.5

A Northern Soul by The Verve
Apr 15 2026

It starts off very well. But it drags. Not enough dynamics or catchy songs. Way too long. But like their sound in general although Ashcroft sounds like a mix of bono and Chris Martin. 3 stars

Vento De Maio by Elis Regina
Apr 17 2026

Surprisingly very good. Didn’t think I would enjoy this
