Popular Reviews

Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers

Mid nineties guitar rock with pop sensibilities. Right up my alley, but I’ve never listened to it before. “Australia” is a standout at first listen. A lot of variety.

Birth Of The Cool by Miles Davis

I‘ve consistently struggled with knowing how to review and, moreso, to appreciate jazz. I know I tend to enjoy it when it’s on, but not how to tell the good from the great. Best I can tell, this is pretty great but not as great as Miles Davis‘ other work on here.

Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers
Jun 05 2025

Mid nineties guitar rock with pop sensibilities. Right up my alley, but I’ve never listened to it before. “Australia” is a standout at first listen. A lot of variety.

Aja by Steely Dan
Jun 06 2025

It’s hard to listen to this album without thinking of how every other white, Millennial dad out there decided to get together (without me) and decide that we all like Steely Dan now. I’ve tried. It’s obviously high effort, but it just isn’t interesting.

Bossanova by Pixies
Jun 09 2025

Love the Pixies. Out of the gate, mixes in some fun surf guitar. Has a lot of energy. Can easily see influence on Nirvana.

The College Dropout by Kanye West
Jun 10 2025

There’s a lot of ideas here, and what works really works. The singles are incredible. The main drawback is that it is overindulgent in ways that I frankly find annoying (it ends with a nearly 13 minute account of how he got a record deal).

Endtroducing..... by DJ Shadow
Jun 11 2025

Very surprised by this album. I read the description of it and thought it would just be repetitive boops and bops. This has real compositions, with a lot of variety. Great stuff.

Blackstar by David Bowie
Jun 12 2025

I almost knocked it down a star just because I’ve been handing out a lot of five star reviews. That’s not a good reason. I absolutely love this album. It’s a lean, weird swan for an artist with a varied career and never went on cruise control. What an absolute king.

Smile by Brian Wilson
Jun 13 2025

Took this morning to spend a little more time in this album. The instrumental track at the end helped me appreciate the composition a lot more. Love The Beach Boys and was happy to get this one. RIP Brian Wilson.

Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits
Jun 16 2025

I liked the more upbeat songs ok, but this isn’t really for me.

Jun 17 2025

Very catchy, singable songs. Hard for me to take “Wonderwall” seriously, but that’s not really the fault of the song itself.

Violator by Depeche Mode
Jun 18 2025

Saw a Tiktoker call this kind of music “sad noises.” I agree, but as a compliment.

Bryter Layter by Nick Drake
Jun 19 2025

Really liked this one. I do feel a lot of the songs bled into the other. I would like to come back to this one.

The Libertines by The Libertines
Jun 20 2025

It’s fine. The indie landfill period never gave anyone time to breathe and stand on their own. It was hard for me to genuinely listen to this album for that reason.

D by White Denim
Jun 25 2025
Band On The Run by Paul McCartney and Wings
Jun 26 2025

Love Paul McCartney, but still surprised by how much liked this album.

Purple Rain by Prince
Jun 27 2025

We are gathered here today to get through this thing called “life.”

Scum by Napalm Death
Jul 02 2025
Aftermath by The Rolling Stones
Jul 10 2025
Coat Of Many Colors by Dolly Parton
Jul 15 2025

I’ve spent many years in Appalachia and Dolly is our queen. No way she gets less than five stars. She mails my kid books every month.

Vol. 4 by Black Sabbath

Drunk by Thundercat
Jul 31 2025
Juju by Siouxsie And The Banshees
Aug 04 2025
Harvest by Neil Young
Aug 05 2025
Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf
Aug 27 2025

This album is making me reconsider how I rate these. Part of me says that I should consider this a guilty pleasure, but I unreservedly love this album and I will rate it as such.

From Elvis In Memphis by Elvis Presley
Sep 08 2025

Great intro to Elvis. Had only a couple of songs I knew (“In the Ghetto” and “Suspicious Minds”). Gives you a good idea of Elvis as an entertainer. His “Elvisisms” are much more subtle than the impersonators would have you believe.

Rio by Duran Duran
Sep 09 2025

I like that “Hungry Like the Wolf” song.

En-Tact by The Shamen
Sep 12 2025
1999 by Prince
Sep 16 2025

The title track used to really annoy me, but that was because I only listened to the chorus. Hard to hate a song that tells you “I was dreaming when I wrote this.”

LP1 by FKA twigs
Sep 17 2025

A pleasant surprise (I had never heard of this artist before). This is a lovely record. My only gripe is that the album never shifts gears at all.

Tidal by Fiona Apple
Sep 22 2025
Roots by Sepultura
Oct 02 2025
Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Oct 07 2025

I understand the arguments about Kiedis’s lyrics, and I kind of agree. The band still works for me, because I can’t imagine what they would sound like with a different front man. The musicianship is unimpeachable. However, there’s a huge dropoff in quality after track 8, making the album almost twice as long as it needs to be. The score reflects that I am probably biased in favor of this album, since it was a big one for me in high school.

Ocean Rain by Echo And The Bunnymen
Oct 09 2025

One of those bands that few may know by name, but most have heard their influence.

3 + 3 by The Isley Brothers
Oct 10 2025

Straight bangers with excellent musicianship.

Dummy by Portishead
Oct 13 2025

I usually listen to these albums in my car during my commute. When I did that, I didn’t like this one as much. It benefitted greatly from listening with headphones.

Debut by Björk
Oct 14 2025
Medúlla by Björk
Oct 17 2025

Turns out that I love Björk and her weird mouth sounds. I can totally see this as being too avant-garde for some.

Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson
Oct 21 2025

I forget sometimes that I actually like country music. One of the better concept albums I’ve heard.

Basket of Light by Pentangle
Oct 22 2025

I’m kind of a dork, so I would think that I would like this kind of thing, but it’s unbearable.

Who's Next by The Who
Oct 27 2025

One of the albums you expect to see here, but for good reason. Great record.

Sunshine Superman by Donovan
Oct 29 2025

This guy somehow managed to make a song about witches boring.

Guero by Beck

Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Nov 04 2025
Pornography by The Cure
Nov 05 2025

Love Pornography (the Cure album)

Nov 07 2025

I can answer most of the complaints about the album’s sloppiness with “that’s punk rock, baby.”

Sheet Music by 10cc
Nov 12 2025

Not “The Worst Band in the World” but not sure how it makes the list.

Horses by Patti Smith
Nov 25 2025
I Should Coco by Supergrass
Dec 15 2025

It’s fun, but I think its significance may be lost on me as an American. Same goes for a lot of the Britpop albums I get.

Birth Of The Cool by Miles Davis
Dec 16 2025

I‘ve consistently struggled with knowing how to review and, moreso, to appreciate jazz. I know I tend to enjoy it when it’s on, but not how to tell the good from the great. Best I can tell, this is pretty great but not as great as Miles Davis‘ other work on here.

The Queen Is Dead by The Smiths
Dec 18 2025

I get the hate for Morrissey but, what can I say? I’m a sucker for a jangly guitar.

Garbage by Garbage
Dec 19 2025

One of the artists that got me into alternative music back in middle school. Was pleasantly surprised to see it here.

Out Of The Blue by Electric Light Orchestra
Dec 22 2025

I like it but man it’s A LOT.

Boston by Boston
Dec 23 2025

Enjoyable 70s rock n roll. Not revolutionary, but good dad rock.

Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
Dec 24 2025

It’s a good listen. An intentionally retro sounding album, so nothing revolutionary. I think much of the reputation of this album comes from Winehouse’s unfortunate passing.

Dec 26 2025

A solid Christmas album that you can play in the background of your Christmas party and it won’t draw a lot of attention to itself. Also Phil Spector is a murderer.
