Bought this album in the 90s and really only gave it a small chance. I’ve definitely been missing out. Great from beginning to end.
A couple really catchy songs, a few decent ones and several meh songs. A fun listen but overall, not an album I’ll likely go back to.
I really wanted to like this one. Unfortunately, the urge to skip many songs was strong. I especially did not like the background singing. Ray is a great singer but I did not love this.
Loved this album. Not a bad song. Can’t wait to listen again.
I’ve never been a big fan of jazz. Still am not, but enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would. Got bored during the last couple of tracks, but the first two or three were really strong.
Pretty solid album from beginning to end.
Haters gonna hate. This is great. Very confused about the idea that I had never heard of the album or even the band before. Curious to see if I still like it in a year, but after one listen, I love it.
Great from beginning to end. Frontier Psychologist is ridiculously good.
Worst album I have had to endure thus far. Incredibly awful. Constant talking, annoying vocals….. just bad. I respect anyone that disagrees and gives it a five but still want to smack them across the face. I blame the music. I’m not usually prone to such violence. Thanks a lot Dexy.
Radiohead have eluded me for years. I’ve kind of liked them, but they’ve never really clicked for me. That is, until I was assigned this album and really sat down and listened to it with more intention. I was blown away. It finally clicked.
Overall a good listen with no skips. No Woman No Cry not as good as the live version but still great. Title track is a standout. Not enough great songs to get a five but a solid listen
Loved this when it came out and love it today. Find the River is one of my all time favorite songs. Nightswimming, Try Not to Breathe, Man on the Moon, Sidewinder….From beginning to end, this is an easy 5. The only weakness I can find with this album is that I have listened to it too much and sometimes tire of it.
Nothing amazing but not bad either. I thought it actually got better and better as I progressed through the songs. Didn’t love the singer. Overall, don’t think there is anything really great or memorable here. Would much rather have seen Suicidal Tendencies’s self-titled album on this list.
Really wanted to give this a 5 but after 2-3 listens, just can’t do it. I really like the album but don’t love it. Some really good songs but just am not blown away like I hoped I would be.
It’s Sonic Youth. Of course it gets a 5. Schizophrenia by itself would justify this but from start to end, this album is great. Sonic Youth are like mayonnaise on a burger to me. I can see why some people don’t like them. And I’m not always in the mood for em. But my god, when I am, they are perfection.
An undeniably great album. I knew the five or six releases going in but little else. I expected the second half to be weaker and was pleasantly surprised that was not the case. There are a lot of great songs here. I have no doubt that I will be listening to this album a lot more in the future.
After one listen I had this at a 2 with no plans to listen again. The.listened again anyway and liked it a little more. Every time I listen I like it more. It’s a mood dependent album for sure but overall, pretty good. Killer Queen is of course the best song.
Meh. A couple catchy songs. Lyrically terrible. I could literally name 1001 other albums that should be included rather than this one. Did the Pet Shop Boys make a financial contribution to the publishing of this book or something?
Some of these songs sound like they were written by teenagers and recorded on old school keyboards. The song One in. million sounds like a cheesy 80s sitcom theme. And yet, I like a few songs. The first song and then Yesterday When I Was Mad” and “The Theatre” are decent catchy songs.
Unfortunately there is too much bad on this album to give it a good score.
Somehow Pulp has avoided me over the years. Well not anymore. Loved this immediately and will likely be listening to it a lot from here on out. Can't wait to explore the rest of their catalogue. So many good songs here. An easy 5.
Pretty strong overall album. No song stuck out as amazing but several really good ones. Will definitely revisit.
Tried to appreciate this more and just couldn’t. Kept forgetting to pay attention. A couple decent tracks, otherwise just background music for me.
Was really only familiar with 5 songs. Gave each of the others several listens today. Liking them more with each listen. I was torn between 4 and 5 on this one. The greatness of a few of the songs pushes this over the edge for me.
Great music, really annoying vocals. Different singer and this is a 4.
Had never listened to Joni Mitchell before but am well aware of her significance. Wanted to like it but after one listen felt no connection and it was a sure 1 for me. Then I listened again. And again. Gave it several listens throughout the day and something has clicked and now I find myself really liking it. Glad I gave it another chance after that first listen.
An undeniably great album. Got a couple misses, but the hits are legendary. The louder played the better.
A few good songs and a few snoozers. Overall, a decent album for background. Nothing really stands out as great.
Looked at some reviews before I listened and based on them, expected a messy disappointment. It was anything but that. Super fun album with a lot of great high energy tracks! So glad I got introduced to this. Had never given these guys a listen. Will definitely be listening to more of them.
I like some songs but there is no variety and nothing that really makes me want to keep listening. It’s a 3 for me. A high 3, but a 3.
Love this album. Some amazing songs. Would give five stars but just lacks a little variety as several of the songs sound similar.
A couple of good songs and an amazing voice but horrible music. Sounds like it was made on an Atari 2600.
Neil Young at his best. This album has some amazing songs and no weak spots. An easy 5 for me.
I’ve listened to the album three times today and read others’ reviews. I get what people are saying. This is safe, not exceptional, and maybe even a little car commercially. But during my listens, I never got bored and I liked every song. That has got to mean something. I am giving it a 4. And I reserve the right to change it to a 3 or 5 after listening to it some more. Okay, I got bored. It’s a 3😆
I liked this much more than I thought I would. Some very good songs. Ultimately, I did get a little bored and could swear that I heard “Cars” more then once.
Knew the name but not the music. Glad I listened. I like this a lot.
Great album from start to end.
Tried to give us a fair chance. Jazz just is not my thing. I did kind of like the first song, but after that, I felt like I was listening to a mix of cheesy tv show theme songs and elevator music.
Don’t think I would go back and listen to this again, but some of the songs did have a nice sound and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
Really good album with no skips. I’ve been missing out for a long time on this one. Maybe not a perfect album but this is worthy of a 5.
Different. Interesting. Powerful.
Over the last several years, I have tried listening to this several times. While I found some of the songs, enjoyable, ultimately, I just never “got it”. I would listen and go from thinking I was going to really love it to absolutely hating it and thinking it was just weird for the sake of being weird. I just could not understand why so many people loved it and why it was getting so much critical acclaim. Felt like the ultimate Pitchfork “this is weird, let’s give it album of the year” album to me.
I was kind of excited when this popped up today. Now I had a reason to really give it a listen song by song and try to understand it. I’ve listened through the album twice today and have at different times decided it was a one, a two, a three, a four, and a five. Not sure I’ve ever had an album confuse me so much. In some ways, I love it in some ways I still can’t shake the weirdness. However, as I listen more, I feel like I’m starting to get it and really like it. It’s not the kind of album you just play at a dinner party. More of an intense, individual listening kind of record.
Kudos to Fiona Apple for taking risks and making music that is outside of the box. I certainly can understand how people would hate this, but I am no longer one of them.
But with all this said, I sure wish I could somehow delete those seal sounds at the end of the first song. Not sure I’ll ever grow accustomed to that.
Great from beginning to end.
The bad: lyrics don’t age well. Very cringy and feels like they were written by and for junior high students. Hard to listen to the entire album all the way through. Sounds pretty repetitive.
The good: undeniably great mixing and beats. Represents an era of rap and is fun to listen to if you can do so without paying too much attention to what he is saying.
Loved it when it came out and love it now. Every track is great. Can’t see myself ever tiring of this. I genuinely feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t love this.
Fun album. Pretty vanilla and safe, but fun. Randy Scouse Git is a standout.
Songs may lack variety but I love the energy. A couple weak tracks but I like most of them. At times the vocals are a little annoying but overall, really good album.
2-3 really good songs but otherwise pretty much a meh album for REM. And I don’t ever want to hear “Stand” again.
Liked the first couple of songs. Album went south for me pretty quickly after that.
The first three songs and the last three songs are great. Not a fan of the sax on “your latest trick”. Like always with Knopfler, the guitar play is amazing.
Why didn’t I know about this???
Not a weak moment on this album. It’s crazy to me that there are people that don’t love this. I feel sorry for those people.
I’ve tried and just can’t get into this guy. A couple ok songs here but I quickly become bored.
