1001 Albums Summary

Already familiar with this one. One of the best live albums 👍

What an epic track to start off the album. Fantastic record. I’ve been meaning to listen to all of The Rolling Stone’s discography. They’ve created so many masterpieces, it’s easy to see why they’re considered amongst the greatest.

The Velvet Underground was a one-of-a-kind band. I already owned a physical copy of this album since my early 20s when I first discovered them. Not every track stands out, but they’re unique in their own way. Pale Blue Eyes will always be a personal favorite from this album.

A very experimental album with a mix of genres. I was looking forward to listening to this since I love Peter Gabriel’s biggest hits. Unfortunately, it failed to make an impression on me. Solsbury Hill and Here Comes The Flood are the only standouts.

First time I’ve ever heard of this band. The album was okay, yet forgettable. They sound like every other Brit rock band of the time.

What a fitting album title. 3.5

Perfect album. 10/10, no notes. Everybody Wants to Rule the World is the greatest song of the ‘80s, and one of the best in general, period.

Well, this was terrible. I understand this was meant to be satirical, but hearing a white person continuously saying the n word was highly uncomfortable…which was the point, I guess. Nevertheless, this sucked.

I adore Emmylou Harris, and this was nice, but I just prefer her earlier records.

Time of the Season is the only outstanding track on this album, the rest was pretty mediocre.

I only semi-liked 3 songs from the album. Of course I’d heard of PJ Harvey before but was never really impressed with what I heard. All I kept thinking throughout this was Patti Smith 2.0. 1.5

This is literally just the soundtrack to every car commercial since 2000.

The Who sucks.

Was this really hardcore? More like ‘boring’.

I just cannot take British rap seriously. I’m so sorry.

This was my 2nd Pulp album and I’m still not impressed. Listening to the singer whispering in some of these songs was like having a gross old man whispering in my ear. Something Changed was my least disliked song, which I’d probably like a bit more if someone else sang it, I’m just not a fan of the singer’s voice. Safe to say this band is not my cup of tea.

What a major improvement from 21, which I didn’t care for. Fell in love with most of these songs; perfect for daydreamers and the heartbroken </3. 4.5

Top tracks: The Boll Weevil and Mule Skinner Blues. I appreciate early folk, but this isn’t an album I’d listen to again.

‘70s rock, this should’ve been right up my alley, but sadly I didn’t like a single song.

I came to the realization long ago that while I know Jazz is a complex art form that opened the doors to what music is today, it’s just not a genre I’d willingly seek out and listen to. Much of it sounds the same to me and I get bored quickly.

FINALLY one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite groups ever. One of my fondest memories is buying a CSNY cd at Best Buy on my 18th birthday and listening to it for the first time on a road trip and I’ve loved them ever since. Beautiful harmonies, which I’m a sucker for. Fantastic beginning to end.

I wasn’t blown away by anything, but this was a pleasant and mellow album, something nice to have on in the background. I’d check out more by this artist. Top tracks: Happiness, Eat Yourself

Wasn’t fully vibing with the first couple of songs, but thankfully Bob did not disappoint. Love when he began adding more country influence. Top tracks: Meet Me in Morning, Shelter from the Storm, Buckets of Rain

This album was fierce. Purple Rain has to be in the top 5 greatest songs of the ‘80s. 3.75 Top tracks: Baby I’m a Star, Purple Rain

RIP to an amazing woman with so much heart and so much talent. As a classic country music lover I was already a fan of hers. I can’t recall the moment I became a fan, but I guess over the years I was simply drawn to her sweet as honey voice and heartfelt songwriting, and this album is a great example of that. My Blue Tears is among my favorite songs of all time. Thank you for everything, Dolly. I will always love you. Top tracks: Coat of Many Colors, My Blue Tears, The Way I See You

Oh how I dig those funky ‘70s sounds. These compositions are fun, maybe not all the way through, but less boring than other jazz I’ve had to sit through.

Oh hell yeah. It’s music like this that makes me imagine my hair blowing in the breeze as I’m cruising in a sexy muscle car in the ‘70s. If you lived that life, I envy you. Anyway, loved this. This was meh. Not a favorite. Has some decent songs, but very forgettable. Sorry, Bruce. I still love you. 2.75 Top tracks: Waitin’ On a Sunny Day, My City of Ruins

Found myself liking it more than the first time I gave it a listen. Ian Curtis was never the best singer, but JD’s overall sound draws me in. Experimental and ahead of its time, featuring who would later become New Order after Ian’s death. 3.5 Top tracks: New Dawn Fades, Shadowplay, Interzone, I Remember Nothing

There will never be another Freddie Mercury, and I am grateful for the art he left this world. Queen is a one of a kind band. I don’t know how else to describe their music other than art rock opera. I’m transported onto a theater seat each time they come on. Top tracks: Father to Son, White Queen (As It Began), Ogre Battle

Oh how this speaks to my soul, like I’m floating in a blissful ‘90s dream. I want to live inside this album. Top tracks: Cherry-coloured Funk, Iceblink Luck, Heaven or Las Vegas

The Windmills of Your Mind was pretty good. The rest? Yawn.

I love The Band, this album not so much. Whispering Pines is absolutely breathtaking. Wish the rest of the album had been just as perfect. Top tracks: Up On Cripple Creek, Whispering Pines, Rockin’ Chair

I always thought What’s Love Got to Do With It was overplayed so I never payed much attention to Tina Turner’s music. Well, I’ve definitely been missing out. This was glorious. Top tracks: I Might Have Been Queen, Let’s Stay Together, I Wrote a Letter

This was pretty fun.

Not my fave, but they still rock. Top tracks: White Riot, Police & Thieves

Can’t believe I missed out on this hidden gem for so long. Come On Eileen is that song I became obsessed with the first time I heard it and then grew sick of when it became overplayed. Well, I wrongly assumed it’d be their only good song because this was fantastic and so fun. The gorgeous track ‘Old’ is my new favorite discovery. Let this be a reminder to look past the ‘one hit wonder’ reputation, you’ll never know what you’re missing out on. 4.5 Top tracks: Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven When You Smile), Old, Liars A to E

I’m so tempted to give this one star for that awful Iron Man cover alone. But that travesty aside, this is soothing mediocre pop rock, which I could see growing on me after a few more listens. For now, this only had two standouts, and no, one of them isn’t Lovefool, which I’m frankly sick of at this point. 2.5 Top tracks: Step On Me, Great Divide

Can’t go wrong with Ray Charles. Unfortunately, most of the album didn’t stand out to me, except for 3 stellar tracks. Top tracks: Let the Good Times Roll, Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Cryin’, Come Rain or Come Shine

I won’t forget thinking VF were a girl band the first time I heard Add It Up, especially given the band name. Would’ve been cooler if they were, but alas, they still rock. So ahead of its time. Love the energy, sound and lyrics. 4.25 Top tracks: Please Do Not Go, Add It Up, Good Feeling,

Perfect album to start off this autumn season. Doesn’t get more ‘60s than this folk, psychedelic, Indian-influenced album. I love that decade, especially the latter half, so I enjoyed this. Top tracks: Sunshine Superman, Ferris Wheel, Season of the Witch, The Trip, Celeste

Shining Star was the most fantastic choice to kick off this album. Gorgeous vocals, groovy, funky and soulful beats, it all flowed so well. 4.5 Top tracks: Shining Star, That’s the Way of the World, Happy Feeling, Reasons, Africano

This was all right. Too much screaming for my taste. Top tracks: Heart-Shaped Box, Dumb, All Apologies. Marigold (personal fave from the deluxe edition).

Wish I loved this more. A lot of it was just so repetitive and went on too long. Loved the opening track though.

I’m blown away by this album. Where has it been all my life? The title couldn’t be more fitting. I love albums that take me on a journey. Top tracks: Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space, Come Together, Broken Heart

Live albums aren’t my favorite—there are a few exceptions. This one was just okay. I don’t hate The Dead, but most of these songs just dragged on. 2.5
