Album Summary

Hotel California is the fifth studio album by American rock band Eagles. Released on December 8, 1976, by Asylum Records, Hotel California was recorded by Bill Szymczyk at the Criteria and Record Plant studios between March and October 1976. It was the band's first album with guitarist Joe Walsh, who had replaced founding member Bernie Leadon, and is the last album to feature founding bassist Randy Meisner. The front cover is a photograph of the Beverly Hills Hotel by David Alexander. Hotel California topped the US Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart. At the 20th Grammy Awards, the Eagles won a Grammy Award for "Hotel California", which won Record of the Year, and for "New Kid in Town". The album was nominated for Album of the Year but lost to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. Three singles were released from the album, with two topping the Billboard Hot 100, "New Kid in Town" and "Hotel California", whilst "Life in the Fast Lane" reached No. 11. Hotel California is one of the best-selling albums of all time. It has been certified 26× Platinum in the US, and has sold over 32 million copies worldwide, making it the band's best-selling album after Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975). It has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time. In 2003 and 2012, it was ranked number 37 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". A 40th anniversary special edition of Hotel California was released in November 2017.

Album 351. Hotel California (https://open.spotify.com/album/2widuo17g5CEC66IbzveRu?si=mmwl2dd0QFeosi6BI2lRfA&utm_source=copy-link) — Eagles (1976) October is a month of good albums and I've waited so long for it. Classic dad soft/country rock. I wish the whole album were as good as Hotel California and Life in the Fast Lane, but it isn't 4/5 Liked: — Hotel California — Life in the Fast Lane — Wasted Time — Victim of Love

You’re damn right i skipped the title track. I mean i don’t have to explain myself, right? Because it like, sucks? Anyway, WOOF to this one unfortunately. I like Eagles fine but this is absolutely not my favorite version of them. This album was really slow and corny? The songs feel like they take forever? I didn’t even really like the Joe Walsh number on it! Try and Love Again really worked for me though! That and Life in the Fast Lane even though i am pretty staunchly anti-Henley.

It sucks, there is no invention here, incredibly bland and I wasn't interested. Honestly should be a one, but I kinda liked Wasted Time and its reprise so I decided to be generous. That and it is also fairly easy listening, cause it has no soul or character.

Hate the eagles

I have not been kind enough to the Eagles. I'm softening on them quite a lot.

What can I say? A classic. Fast and fun.

Melodic and chill

Albumazo. Clásico.

I knew more songs from this than I previously realised! Not my favourite flavour of rock but I definitely was bobbing along to a lot of the earlier tracks. Not feeling the ballads though.

Just not for me..

The birth of metal, rock and roll gets spooky scary

nostalgic

Eagles – Hotel California (1976) On Day 295, this record completely shattered my prior expectations. Having always suspected it was an overrated commercial juggernaut and still wishing One of These Nights had made the 1001 list instead the band proved firsthand why this is a multi-platinum landmark. While the ubiquity of the title track still leaves it feeling somewhat overhyped compared to the pedestal culture places it on, the rest of the tracklist is an astonishing, coherent triumph. "Try and Love Again" stood out as the absolute peak of the record alongside the breezy, bittersweet perfection of "New Kid in Town," both delivering flawless harmonies and emotional resonance. The gritty, high-octane drive of "Life in the Fast Lane" and the soulful, orchestral ache of "Wasted Time" proved the band's remarkable range, while the sweeping, seven-minute epic "The Last Resort" provided a devastating conceptual finale. Immensely polished, brilliantly executed, and undeniably deserving of its reputation. A definitive 4/5.

I hate having to say this because I'd never listen to this album by choice, but it's super well crafted and played. Rumours is so popular on this site, this is as good. It's just... The Eagles. Sigh!

Although I really like Life In The Fast Lane and there are a couple other groovin' classic rock tunes on here, I don't need to hear the song Hotel California ever again... I've reached my lifetime quota. Besides that, there are just too many shmaltzy AM radio ballads/slow songs. 2 stars

First half is exceptional. Second half a bit slow.

1. Hotel California. 8/10 2. A new kid in town. 6/10 3. Life in the fast lane. 4.5/10 4. Wasted Time. Reprise. Victim of love. 3.5/10 7. Pretty maids all in row. Try and love again. 4.6/10

3.5/5 Didn’t pay too much attention to lyrics but liked the sound

A class and classic album. A couple of tracks are stone cold classics, and the rest are damned good, tho' when you open with Hotel California, everything afterwards seems like a (minor) disappointment. Definite 4.5 star album.

Not as bad as The Dude makes them out to be. The slide guitar is cool.

Another Dad favourite no doubt.

soft rock, i enjoyed the guitar solos and my favorite of the whole album was new kid in town. not my usual type of music but i enjoyed exploring something different

While I'm not blown away by anything on here, I couldn't imagine anyone hating this band as much as The Dude does. Safe rock and roll fit for your dad as he speeds down the highway and ready made for compous amounts of radio play, there is a lot of talent within the group. There isn't enough bite on this for me. This is soft rock with an emphasis on the soft part. Outside of enjoying the title track, there is nothing on here that I felt that I needed to hear again. For the 4th best selling studio album of all time, I'm rather underwhelmed by this.

7.5 / 10

I always live my life in the fast lane

Although I do really dig the harmonies in this one I do just find most of it to be very dull. I think the drumming is good on the whole thing as well but overall the lyrical content and production overall just ain’t for me. Fav tracks: hotel California, the new kid in town, and try and love again

To try to take this seriously, as I did for a minute, is to be reminded that self-importance and saccharine sentiments were the flip side of everything I love about 70s rock. Some good musicianship, anyway.

I never got the popularity of this band. They're pretty bland and hokey. I do think New Kid in Town is a vastly superior song to Hotel California...but that's not saying much.

Ugh. I knew this day was coming but it was still an unpleasant shock. It has occurred to me that I would rather know the date of the last time I have to hear Hotel California than the date of my own death; unfortunately I had that thought 30 years ago and I can't tell you how many times I've been subjected to it since. Its inescapability is itself mimetic, as it induces the feeling it describes. So did I actually listen? I started with the fourth song, and the whole thing is still execrable. However, I will confess that I Can't Tell You Why (on The Long Run, not on the list) is one of my favorite slices of 70s schmaltz ever, and it was written by the other guy.

Nothing to write home about.

4.8/5 - Near perfect album. Despite hearing this all the time, this album was still great.

Overplayed? Sure, but that's because of its success and being good. Title track is a GOAT, and in isolation, an amazing song.

Don't let the first three songs fool you, this album is nothing special. Going from Life in the Fast Lane into Wasted Time is so incredibly jarring it infuriated me.

Extra star for the drum fill after “just can’t kill the beast”. Iconic.

I just think it’s neat that the people of the nineteen seventies had a maroon 5 to call their own

It's fine

Chris and Turners Hate for this album makes me like it more

The meme about hating The Eagles is whatever. But this album is amazing. When I was younger I had a cassette that this album on one side and The Long Run on the other side. It’s always been one of my favorites, and it’s hard to take someone who ranks it low very seriously.

Was expecting this to be a great MOR album, but I was surprised how boring everything other then the hits was

It's better than 3 stars but I can't do 3.5 and I don't think it's a 4 stars.

Well, the brilliance of the title track isn't up for debate, one of the best rock tracks ever. The other singles are good, but nowhere near Hotel California. The rest of the album is okay-ish.

What’s left to say about one of the most well known records of all time? It remains a joy to listen to.

The title track is so ubiquitous.. I used to hate it, but it has grown on me over the years. A solid classic rock album. 3.75/5.

Chefs kiss

Title track single handedly keeps this schlock from being 1 star

I hate The Eagles, they're lame and absolute shit. Some of this music isn't terrible but fuck...

The album starts with the incredibly strong title-track that promises an album of interesting, emotionally complex tracks inspired by its titular setting that the songs ultimately can't fulfill. What follows are classic dad rock songs that actually sound younger than they are, which is a compliment i guess. Yet, the songs are rather boring and just unimaginitive compared to the title track. Songs like Wasted Time or Pretty Maids All In a Row COULD be great, but they are not bold enough to actually do something interesting. They are competently written, performed and sung songs. So competently, that they get stale quickly. But hey, at the end of the day the album contains Hotel California so that's as big a win as most artists will see in their career.

Listened before? Yes Thoughts: - The Eagles are definitely a "singles" band for me. My mom had a greatest hits album when I was growing up, so listening to this I knew every word of the 3 singles, but had no memory of the other songs. - I still love the song Hotel California; I don't care what anyone says, I even like the long intro and outro. I do love weird, vague lyrics though! - Thought this might be a 5 at first, but the non-singles are mostly just "fine" to me. Favorite track(s): Hotel California, New Kid in Town

A very good album with a much edgier tone than previous releases. Rock anthem songs Life in The Fast Lane n title track among the best ever. Balanced by painfully aware romantic songs.

Listening session: october 4th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: listened to one song before Thoughts: never listened much to the Eagles but this is iconic dad rock Favourite tracks: Hotel California, New Kid in Town & Wasted Time

Wasted Time, Try and Love again и

One great song a good album does not make. I am a relative fan of the Eagles, at a "Greatest Hits" level, but for some reason have never listened to this album in full until yesterday. Other than the title track, it is actually pretty bland in its entirety. I'm a little disappointed really

Hotel california (the track) is a classic, but as a whole the album tends to push the duration of its songs a bit too much. ‘New Kid in Town’ is a prime example, a good track but just goes on too long. Wasted time even has an unnecessary reprise. Where the songs are a beeter length, like Victim of Love, they’re just a bit meh. I guess driving down a long American highway this would be a great album, but the majority of it just doesn’t connect with me. It’s all a bit too soft and middle of the road. It’s a firm 2.5/5 resting heavily on the title track’s greatness

I can still remember the first time I heard this album as a fairly young teenager, such was the impact it had on me. Listening again today, I’m almost a bit sad at how underwhelmed I felt by it. Tracks 1 to 3 are one of the greatest track runs in music history: the title track speaks for itself, “New Kid in Town” is, probably, my favourite by the Eagles, especially the last minute of it, and “Life in the Fast Lane” is full of 70s excess. I’m as mesmerised by those tracks as I was twenty years ago. But, once you hit “Wasted Time”, and its rather unnecessary reprise, I feel this starts to lose its way. “Victim of Love” tries to resuscitate it, but it never quite manages it; by the time I got to “The Last Resort”, I sort of wanted it put out of its misery. I still think the Eagles are a brilliant band, and is probably the best gig I’ve ever been to, but this just doesn’t hold up like I both imagined, and expected it, to.

I love Hotel California the song, but I found myself spectacularly unmoved by Hotel California the album. It was fine and I have zero strong opinions either way. 3/5

I like the Eagles in small doses.

I did not realize Hotel California was such an old song! I really liked Hotel California and New Kid in Town. I would not mind revisiting this.

Dance to remember

Hotel california 3.5 New kid in town 3.5 (Lautaro Blanco) Life in the fast line 4 (Jagger Herrera) Wasted time 1.5 Wasted time (reprise) xxxxxxx Victim of love 3.5 (Jagger Herrera) Pretty maids all in a row 1.5 Try and love again 3 (Lautaro Blanco) The last resort 2 Total: 2.8/5

Hotel California and Life in the Fast Lane really set the album to a fast pace, but I liked Wasted Time and Pretty Maids a bit more. This album is between a 4/5 for me, but I'll round up.

Hotel California kicks ass, and they do know how to play their instruments, but there is something inherent in The Eagles that make The Dudes observations ring true. I actually didn't hate this as much as I remembered, it's my advancing age I guess, and I really do love Hotel California the song, but I could certainly go on living without hearing the rest again.

I know people loooove this album but I just was like … it’s fine. I put it on in the background while I worked which maybe was a bit unfair to it, but nothing particularly stood out to me. I know that’s probably blasphemy

I'm charmed, I'll admit they get me with a few hooks from time to time. Really sets the blueprint for a lot of much worse 80s pop rock

try and love again is amazing. everything else is borning and it's mixed kinda weird! i feel like no low-end in most songs which makes things a little flat at point.

Never could be bothered to check them out any further than Hotel California (the song). But I liked it.

Classic album. No notes.

Yesterday I got presented The Sex Pistols, today it's their counterpart: The Eagles with their AOR-Hitrecord "Hotel California". Top notch in every aspect. Highly polished. Award winning.

Three songs on this album support it being on this list, but the rest of the album isn’t spectacular.

Yeah definitely a little overrated, the hits (title track and live life in the fast lane) are great though and I also quite enjoy Try and Love Again

Seminal album. I still don't like their dig at Steely Dan, and yet this is a "classic rock" band I actually enjoy.

Great classic rock

One heck of a fabulous album. One of the greatest. Love it.

Fantastic, the most popular song is the worst song in the album which shows just how good it is!

What have I done to anger the Album Generator Gods today. Fuck this album, man.

Easy listenin'. Maybe too ez.

Beautiful indigo sunrise album

Oh my god, this album. 5 stars for being fantastic, 1 star for being absolutely fucking terrible. I will not be taking questions at this time.

I don't like the slower songs as much, but the awesomeness of the title track and the rock songs overrides that.

A great great album. The title track is a masterpiece as is “New Kid in Town”, I am also a big fan of “victim of love”, one of the heaviest/punchy Eagles tracks in their career.

I can't say I hate the fuckin' Eagles, but I can't say I enjoy them either.

A lot more "ballad-y" than I remember. My problem with The Eagles is that they kinda fall into a crack between my listening moods: they're not *hard* enough to really rock, they're not *country* enough to really twang, and they're not *smooth* enough to make love to your old lady to. They're kinda a little bit of everything but not enough of one thing. If this was on in the background while I was eating a hot dog in a bar I wouldn't be mad about it, though.

I don’t see an option for less than 1.

I hate the eagles

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man

motsatsen till uppfriskande

A very good album. The Eagles just aren't for me musically, but this album is easily the best they have produced in my opinion. Not only the timeless title track, but 'The Last Resort' and especially 'Life in the Fast Lane' were personal favorites of mine. 4/5

The first three songs are fine, but after that it's a whole lot of nothing. Yelp Review from the Hotel California is a 2 out of 5. I'm checking out! I'm leaving!

First listened in 2021. Has its moments of pop-rock brilliance but is overall a bit blander than the work of their contemporaries. Key tracks: Hotel California, The Last Resort

it started off so strong :(((
