Understandably dark, I'm quite a fan of Bowie's work. For me this is not one of the best, but it was interesting.
It was ok, I was expecting to like more than I did.
Interesting, enjoyed some of it.
Good music, struggle with his voice.
Very down beat, it was ok.
A good beat, I enjoyed it.
Really not my thing, just don't get it. 😕
I liked some of it, maybe after listening to it several times, I may decide I like the whole album?
Weird. Like all the crazy bits of the Beatles on one album.
Another one I quite liked, had echoes of Billy Idol.
Not completely my thing, but nevertheless I enjoyed it. Great rhythm.
Bit too soft for me, not my thing, but did not offend.
It was ok, would listen to Arcade Fire again, given the right mood.
Wrong culture, not for me.
Surprisingly light with an up beat, nevertheless it did not ring my bell.
Obviously great musicians, some of the music certainly sounded familiar, not my thing, but it was easy listening and not poison to the ears.
Doesn't really go anywhere, but more than just random sounds. Again not my genre.
Liked some of the music, interesting and some familiar riffs. Found the overall sound too much by the end of the album.
Liked the familiar songs, but in the end I got bored.
Very repetitive, I got bored. I can imagine dancing to some of it, if you were off your head. Some tracks had a good beat.
Some great classics, she has a great voice.
This did not do much for me, although I liked her voice. Was not catchy enough for me.
This wasn't bad, quite a mix of genre influences, quite punky in places, long before punk. This is for me a 3.5 rating, need to listen to it again.
Enjoyed this, what a voice and great guitar licks.
Very talented, but not for me.
Enjoyed it, reminded of Led Zeppelin and echoes of Yes in some of the softer vocals.
Quite interesting, I enjoyed it, probably worth another listen.
Enjoyed some of this in parts, but as a whole I got bored, not my thing.
Didn't like Pulp at the time, but I do. Classic album.
More melodic than most, but still not my thing.
Enjoyed, some great tracks. Great early punk.
A bit more melodic and professional sounding, but still not my thing!
The working mans poet. Enjoyed most of the tracks, but they were all very similar, can't get too excited about the album.
Actually enjoyed this album, I've never listened to this before, even though I'm familiar and like their hits. Some of the tracks were quite catchy, need to listen to the whole album again.
Already rated this, see my previous review.
Quite fond of some of Tom Petty's hits, first time listening to this album, it was good.
Not my genre, but you have to admire the musicianship. I recognise at least two tracks, Pennies from heaven and Take Five, quite enjoyed the later.
This didn't do much for me, not my thing.
Lots of energy and great guitar riffs, enjoyed most tracks and absolutely loved "Sweet Child o' Mine", which ups the rating for me!
It quite surprised me, but I really enjoyed this album, I'm not aware of Tracy Chapman, except I recognise Fast Car. I think she has a great voice, will definitely listen to the album again.
Good for Christmas, but there are many albums like this.
Like the fact there is a story line, but this is still not to my taste.
Quite enjoyed this album, really liked half the tracks. Such an unusual voice.
Not bad at all, really enjoyed some tracks, interesting music.
This is not a bad album, but it also isn't a great one. It did not do much for me, the music was ok.
Ok second Steely Dan album in a row. Nothing wrong with the music, just doesn't go anywhere, I got bored.
What a mixture of musical styles, not my thing.
At first I thought what an unusual voice, then I thought when will the album end! Thankfully there were only 10 tracks on the album 🤯
I like the Specials, this album contains some great tracks, but also some weak ones. Nevertheless, the rhythm is great and you could dance to most! It's a 3.5 from me.
One of my sons had this album, it contains catchy singles. Great musicality and very fond memories.
Big fan of Pink Floyd and this album had some echoes of early Floyd, however I found some of the tracks on this album to be slow and weird and there was no enjoyable musical interlude. Also, I wasn't massively impressed by all of early Floyd.
Great energy, an enjoyable album, love the lyric "Oh, I know I'm being used
That's okay, man, 'cause I like the abuse". This is another of those 3.5 ratings for me.
I surprisingly enjoyed this album, I am amazingly unaware of this group's catalogue, but maybe I listened to it at the right moment?
Found it a bit uninspiring, the only track I mildly liked was the last track, which had a bit more zip to it. I won't be buying the cd.
Great harmonies, generally uplifting music, a few well known tracks that are great. One or two tracks are a bit bland. Overall I secretly liked the album. Gentle and non offensive.
I enjoyed the singles reminding me of an important time in my life. I enjoyed the electronic synth experimentation. The music isn't particularly to my liking, but it's ok.
Do not know this band, quite like their sound. I felt I drifted in parts, proof it did not completely hold my attention.
Boring, mostly just noise a couple of tracks resembled music e.g. the last track "Being with U', but they were meh.
The guy has a great voice, but I found the whole album a bit slow. Also, he talks too much! Still prefer The Stranglers version of "Walk On By".
This really is not to my taste in music, however unlike some of this kind it was quite melodic, having noticeable tunes. It wasn't just a load of noise. Still not my thing. For me this is a 2.5.
Interesting 🤔, not sure if I could say I enjoyed this album. It appears the lead singer had a sore throat on some of the tracks, which is a shame. I guess this wasn't quite my thing, but it made me smile.
Pleasant sound, but can't say it grabbed me, those pleasure senses just didn't tingle.
I generally like U2, I enjoyed this album, but it wasn't great. I think they were experimenting themselves, following the latest craze.
This was pleasant, jolly with heavy English themes. I love much of the Kinks music, but for me this is not their strongest work, still enjoyable.
Great sound, I'm very particular about what heavy metal I like, I don't like just a thrashing of the guitar, a noise, it has to be melodic. Although heavy metal is not my favourite genre, this album ticked the right boxes.
Not exactly my thing, but was listenable, for it's type it was quite good.
Very wacky, light-hearted, lots of fun, but not my thing.
It was ok, but didn't excite me.
This was a total surprise, this is completely not my thing, but this lady had a great voice, there were a couple of weak tracks, but I enjoyed most. I really liked the Mbube track, good to dance to. I won't be rushing out to buy the album, but I certainly will not avoid in the future.
Not completely my thing, but I enjoyed the storytelling.
I guess you want music to stir emotions, be it sadness, happiness, or even the desire to jump up and dance. This album did just that, I was bored!
Enjoyed this album, particularly liked the last track.
Confusing mix of genre, I enjoyed it in parts and not so much in other parts.
I found the tone boring, I afraid this didn't do much for me.
This is a long album and does contain same just ok tracks, but any album that contains "Houses of the Holy", Trampled Under Foot", "In The Time My Dying" and even "The Wanton Song" and "Boogie With Stu", can't be a bad album. However, "Kashmir" is fantastic, it's got to be one of my favourite songs.
I was quite in to ELP and Yes and used to enjoy a bit of prog rock. This is the first time I have been exposed to this album and wasn't overly impressed, that's not to say it was bad, it just wasn't great. I appreciate that this was probably quite pioneering at the time.
Actually enjoyed it, not completely my thing, but you have to admire the music and fabulous guitar playing. The precursor to rock.
Too much talking and weird.
A few weak tracks, but the singles are good fun.
Excellent album, particularly like "You shook me all night long".
Not much to this music, maybe suited to the background.
Not my thing, didn't stir me either way, was ok.
Not for, just didn't like it.
Doesn't matter how much of this type of music I listened to, they don't stir me. I don't like the style or much of the life experiences they reflect.
Pleasant music, he has a good voice. I enjoyed many of the songs, but some were a bit slow. Easy listening.
Not really my thing, didn't excite me. I liked the rhythm.
Nice sound, good harmonies, really liked the last track "teach your children well", which was a bonus on my version and not on the original release.
Nice bit of blues. Impressive list of collaborators.
I find it very difficult to judge this type of music, I suppose the bottom line is did I like it and the answer is not really.
Quite a fan of David Bowie, but I don't know this album that well. It's a good album, but in my opinion not great, it did contain some good tracks and some not so good. Overall I enjoyed it.
Never was originally that fond of Oasis, but they have grown on me over the years. Really enjoyed this album, very tuneful.
It was ok enjoyed some of the tracks, others did not impress.
I was a bit surprised by this album. It's not particularly my style of music, but was pleasant enough. Good background music. Find this hard to judge. Did it grab me? No. Did I hate it? No.
Middle of the road stuff easy listening, good background music. Nothing to get excited about, but I didn't hate it. Need get a bit bored by the end.
Quite a mix of vocals. Weird in places, some tracks were forgettable, but others I quite liked. The album is fun. I'm not familiar with this group.
Not for me. This type of "music" does nothing for me, although this album was more tuneful than most of it's kind.
I don't mind XTC, however this album is a bit of a mixed bag, there are quite a few I really enjoyed, but there are a few that are quite weak.
Before I started to listen to 1001 albums, I would say I had a wide range of taste in music, but now I realise it's narrower than I thought. This album is not unpleasant, the musicians are skillful and the music does not offend. It's just not for me. I feel this is music Arnold Rimmer would enjoy.
A find it hard to be subjective and difficult to judge some of these albums. Do I hate all heavy metal, no. Did I enjoy this album, no.
I like a couple/a few tracks, but the rest was weird or just not good.
When I was young Yes we're my favourite group, for a time. For pure nostalgia alone I loved this album and it does contain some great tracks.
It was ok. It wasn't great, but it didn't offend. I wouldn't listen to it again.
I was was looking forward to hear this as I love the singles and yeah, the singles were a welcome respite from otherwise uninspiring tracks. It's a good album, but not great.
Late at night after having a few drinks this would be good for background music, when you don't even notice it. I liked the album cover.
I was expecting better, I must admit. I found it a little boring.
Oh dear not for me. Music was pleasant enough, skillful playing, the guy can sing. This just does nothing for me, not my type of thing.
This is hard to rate, after all, it is just background music and that's is purpose 🤣. I grant you that it relaxing and at times barely noticeable 🤷🏻. As background music is concerned it does the job, but would I normally choose to this type of music?
I don't normally like heavy thrash metal, normally it's not melodic enough for me. This however is great, absolutely love "Enter The Sandman" and "The Unforgiven". This could be a 5 for me, but I'll settle with 4, as I'm not a100% sure.
It was ok, I enjoyed some of it, but I did get bored by the end.
I've visited this album many times, because of it's reputation, significance and influence. I like rock, even "heavy rock", I like melodic punk, but I've never warmed to this album. I just don't get it. I quite like the first track, maybe because I heard it a lot. I suppose I don't like "grunge", but I like quite a few of the Foo Fighters stuff and have 2 or 3 of their albums 🤷🏻. Maybe I just don't like the Nirvana sound? I rate it as 3 at the most, giving a nod to its significance.
Not my sort of sound, but the vocals are good and the music is pleasant.
Although not my thing at all, individual tracks were listenable, if not a tad repetitive. However, a whole album was too much for me.
Never heard of this group before, but their overall sound wasn't unpleasant, can't pick out any particular favourite tracks.
Not a group I'm familiar with I quite liked some of the tracks. Some of the vocals reminded of the group Elbow, whom I quite like, a bit more keyboards and synth than the aforementioned, but again I don't mind that. I wasn't blown away, but I didn't mind it.
I don't mind a bit of Elvis, it's different. I found some of the tracks, however, a bit slow and uninspiring.
Individual tracks are ok, but listening to a whole of this music is a bit boring, for me. The singer has a good voice. I found the drum and bass beat a bit repetitive and slightly annoying at times.
Very pleasant sound, very competent musicians. Yet another excellent example of music playing in a coffee shop, in the background. Definitely recognise the first track. I enjoyed the rhythm and sound. However, this isn't my type of music, so would probably not listen to this again.
I like a lot of Foo Fighters output, but this album is not as good as some of their later releases.
Not my genre, but the music was very pleasant in some places. Yet another coffee shop album. The album did drag after a while.
I find this album difficult to rate. My sons like this chap and have this album. I don't hate it, however, I don't like much either. I quite like "Dancer". I know it's got interesting recording techniques, but the music doesn't generally grab me. This is a 2.5 to 3 rating.
Not my type of music, but this group with it's pop themes hit the button. Quite enjoyed it. Liked The Model.
I found myself liking parts of this album, sort of reminded me of the Joy Division sound, although quite different. However, their sound did drag after a full album.
Not for me, liked a couple of tracks, but I disliked too many.
🤢 Very formulaic. Very slushy 🤮. Not my thing. The title track has catchy hooks. I'll not revisit this in the future.
This was a little surprising. The album contained a mix of music with the arrangements being reasonably sophisticated. Although I did not completely love the album, I enjoyed listening to it.
Although I'm not a massive fan of Michael Jackson, I do like several of his songs and most seem to be on this album. This album contains some classic tracks.
Nope. This album had me cringing at some of the vocal lines. I know the album was meant to be downbeat, but this became too much. I also found that the lead vocals did grate a bit. I guess I just didn't get it, but in the end I was pleased when the album finished.
Not a great fan of their sound. The lead vocals grate a tad. I do like Psycho Killer, which for me is the only stand out track.
I like the Who, but this isn't, for me, their best album. I like the "I can see for miles" track.
Interesting 🤔. It's great to be exposed to something that I would not necessarily listen to. It has a very interesting blends of sounds. I actually enjoyed aspects of this album. The style of music means I probably wouldn't deliberately select it to listen to in the future.
Of it's genre this is an easy listening sound. I find the continued chanting a bit wearing by the end of the album, but I enjoyed standalone tracks. The music was however a bit more varied.
I particularly like Bowie's early work. I can't help being influenced by the fact that this is one of the first albums I bought, in it's original vinyl format. For me, this album is excellent. Easy rating for me.
I like the Cure, but probably more their later stuff. This album is the last of their darkest gothic rock stage, before they switched to the lighter new wave genre. It's very interesting and paints a truthful picture of the bands mental state at the time, but don't listen to it if you are feeling down, this album won't help! The music is still sophisticated, but it definitely wouldn't be my pick of a Cure album.
Really not for me. Hate all the talking! My word did this album drone on!
Don't mind the music of Black Sabbath, love the guitar. For me, not a fantastic album, song by song, but enjoyed it as a whole. Actually quite like The Wizard, Behind the Wall of Sleep and Evil Woman. Could be a 4 or 3.5 rating.
Crikey, a good title for the album, it was tragic!
Not bad, although I suspect there are plenty of punk groups like this band with similar sounds. Why was this one picked for the 1001 list? At best average.
Quite a fan of the Smiths, but not so impressed with his solo work. This album has a bit more meat and I can see the Bowie and even T.Rex influences. I astonishingly enjoyed it.
Sorry this is probably one of my most favourite albums. Excellent!
Apart from the obvious classics that this album contains, I've never been a fan of the other tracks on this album. Because of the album's length I've never listened to it all the way through and this project has forced me to do just that. I found that I enjoyed parts of the album and its concept and , due to its length, got bored. Overall because of the classic tracks, although there are some weak tracks and the very fine musicianship, this album was better than I expected. It's not great, but it is not a complete dud.
Nope. I guess I just don't like Hip-Hop generally or shock theatre.
Some great classics on this album with the iconic cover. It does drop a bit in the middle, but this album is high as one of their best. For me this is a high 3 or 3.5/5.
Never heard of this group, however I enjoyed most of their music.
Not what I remember from this group, a bit disappointed.
Some very familiar songs.
Good old Led Zeppelin always delivers. This is a great debut album, but they, for me, improved with their later albums hitting home.
