Kind of weird. In a good way, I think? I liked All the Kings Men, Two Dancers (I), and Empty Nest. The rest was ok.

I liked this. I might like Radiohead more than I think I do? I liked 15 step, bodysnatchers, and arpeggi.

Damn. First time listening to the whole album and it's fucking great. War pigs, paranoid, and iron man are of course the stand out classics but I also liked electric funeral and Jack the stripper.

Nostalgia! I remember loving white winter hymnal, and I don't remember blue ridge mountains but I like it. All the rest kind of blends together for me.

Sorry Marshall, not my thing. There's some good stuff on here but I can't get past his fixation on hurting and killing women. I guess I'm just too easily offended 🤷‍♀️

This album has always been hit or miss for me. It has some absolute classics (synchronicity, every breath you take, king of pain) and some that just don't work for me. But it's still overall a jam

If I had to count the number of times during this experience that an album had a racist skit about going to a Chinese restaurant, it'd be two. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. (Other time in Ice Cream Castle by The Time, to be clear not on the 1001 albums list) This had some high points (Ms. Lauryn Hill usually involved) and some points where I got pretty bored. Rounding up to 3 stars.

Her voice is so lovely and there were some standout pieces in here (the titular song is really good), but it kinda all blended together. Love you Dolly...

Have decided Billy Joel is his generation's ed Sheeran. Gets a bad rap because of some horridly overplayed pop ballads but has a little more (not a lot) under the hood than that.

This is I think the first album I saved in full on my Spotify, like a decade ago. It's so groovy and political and sexy and fun. On this listen, Bonita Applebum and El Segundo stood out.

Idk man, I know he's iconic and everything, but this was pretty meh. However I did like Adam raised a Cain and Promised Land, a few other decent songs in there. I can just really feel how good he *thinks* he is at this and it ruins it for me.

Good stuff. Wish it was longer! Some of these covers are kinda out there but I suspect that was the point.

Wasn't at all familiar with Iggy before this. It's got depressed, even-more-drug-addled David Bowie vibes. Taking off a star because Tiny Girls was so uncomfortable

It's the 50s (and early 60s). I liked Lucille. their harmonies are pretty good and some of the songs are pretty catchy.

Absolutely fucking perfect. Still one of my favorite albums of all time. It's slow to start (on purpose obviously) but when you get into us and them, any color, then brain damage into eclipse, fucking chills every single time

Very cute. I liked Blueberry Hill, Honey Chile, and Mardi gras in new Orleans a lot.

Black Sabbath has been the only repeat so far except for the Beatles and I can see why. The guitar on this is fucking phenomenal. Wheels of confusion and every day comes and goes were my favorites.

The Wikipedia article called his style "sloganistic" vocals which I thought was pretty interesting. Feels pretty modern in a lot of ways. I liked you're not from Brighton, Kalifornia, and Praise you.

Not really my thing/era/genre, but I actually didn't hate this. By the end I felt like it was getting pretty repetitive though. Queer was pretty funny because I initially thought they were using a more modern definition of that word, lol. My favorite was Only happy when it rains.

The first half of this album is so fuckin good, the second half kind of feels "trying to play the hits" to me. More than a feeling, peace of mind, and Long time are great. Rock and Roll Band and Hitch a ride were new to me but they were really good too.

Pretty chill in parts, other parts reminded me a lot of David Bowie. Both pretty cool and definitely piqued my interest, I want to dig more into his discography now for sure.

BIG IRON ON HIS HIIIIIIIIP the meme song was the only one of these I knew. He's a good songwriter, the Robbins originals (El Paso, big iron, master's call) were the best ones. He's got a great voice and the backup vocals were nice too.

Is the Grateful Dead that generation's Tool? I liked parts of this so much and parts were.... Very meandering. The Gospel breakdown in Love light pushed it up to 4 stars.

Interesting and unexpected and fun. I liked the first half more, it had more hooky (perhaps, more western) melodies and felt more 'groovy'. The second half felt more traditional, still good, but I don't speak the language and there wasn't as much for me to go off of. Interested in listening to the rest of their stuff.

This was really interesting. Perfect background music for math homework or programming I feel like, because of how complex the melodies are. More investigation into this guy needed.

The album that inspired basically all modern pop punk. His voice and songwriting/storytelling is fantastic, but those drums really take it to the next level. Perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being young and depressed

According to Wikipedia this album was used in a lot of soundtracks and advertisements, and I can kind of feel that. It isn't bad, but it all kind of sounds the same, and has that very distinct aesthetic that makes you feel like you're playing legend of Zelda after a while.

Doesn't exist on Spotify or Deezer, less than 10k views on Youtube, and somehow one of my favorite finds from this project. This guy's voice is like Morrissey on a good day, the guitar solos are great, and the different genres in here make it so fun to listen to.

Had Little Richard the day before this, not sure if the algorithm planned that or if it was coincidence but either way it's funny. He's a piece of music history, but it's just all the same note for me. Blue suede shoes is a great song but that's about it.

For every banger on here, there's one that I just don't connect with. She's an icon though and I love her style.

Roundabout is a fantastic song. The brahm's symphony excerpt was unexpected. I just kinda.... Don't think I get it? But of course that's the point lol

Was kinda ready to not like this cus the album cover is so minimalist (read:boring), but I actually really liked it. Had some atmospheric energy, I heard lo fi hip hop beats to study to, Coldplay, and phil collins in there somewhere. Interesting stuff.

Oh man, The man toured with Woody Guthrie and you can absolutely hear it. I can hear the throughline to Johnny Cash as well (love the name East Texas Talkin' Blues). So simple but so emotional and classic, I really liked this.

It's hard for music like this to reconcile how the subject matter is so explicitly political but the sound is something that I as an American think of as so relaxing/"chill". It's probably a bigoted simplification of the genre? I liked this though, and I love the album cover.

I know embarrassingly little about the talking heads, mostly just the iconic hits, but this was soooooo good. I love the stream-of-consciousness lyrical style. Hoping for more from them on the list soon!

Ok I got kinda bored at parts cus it got kinda samey, but when it hit it hit hard. Sub crazy went hard af and the I will survive parody/cover in Release Yo Delf was soooo funny.

Strong contender for my favorite album of all time. I think it's underrated, somehow? Every song is so different and yet every one is perfect. On side 1, I have heard no other song quite like '39 in my life. But then on side 2, The prophet's song and the ramp up to Bohemian Rhapsody, fucking chills every time. Beyond incredible.

Part of me feels bad rating this kinda low because I liked most of the individual songs, but it kinda really bled together after a while. Shoutout to dreamer in my dreams though, where he tries something new!

This was kinda weird but it wasn't bad. Some hip hop ish stuff, some rock ish stuff, some like drums and chanting ish stuff? The in between songs "radio station" bits were pretty funny though. 3/5

Jazzy, swingy Big band stuff. I liked it a lot. I guess this guy played the monkey king in jungle book? His voice is great and the backing band is phenomenal. Any album with a song called "I'll be glad when you're dead" gets points from me.

This stepped up in the second half for me (set the world on fire and feel so lonely you could die stood out), but overall it was just kinda meandering. I wonder how Iman (his wife of almost 30 years) felt about "Boss of me"? Overall I'd say if you want late career Bowie, Blackstar is the superior choice.

This was just fine. I really liked Just Like a Woman and there were a few other great lines in there. Idk, it just didn't grab me as much as some of his other stuff. Felt less cohesive in a way.

It starts off pretty slow, but I ended up really enjoying this. Go back home and Cherokee especially. It's nice and soulful and emotional and so very 70s

"turning my thoughts into shadows playing on the walls of me" Never heard of this album or band before, and to be honest I hadn't ever listened to Tommy all the way through before doing this list. I think this is a fascinating representation of a moment in time and the story, musicality, vocals, and straight vibes all play into that. I really enjoyed this.

Is it still cool to hate on U2 or can I admit that this is one of my favorite albums of all time? Is this a safe space? It fucked me up when I learned that they're Irish, but I almost think a love letter this potent can only come from the outside, weirdly enough. There's so many different styles and they're all so fucking good. Special shoutout to how Bono takes the excellent trope of "is this song about a girl or Jesus" and expands it so it could be about romantic love, faith, or drugs. It's amazing.

This is a pivotal album in the story of the beatles, it marks their transition from "happy 60s boy band" to "what the fuck?" I would love to know what that was like to experience in real time. It's almost a foregone conclusion that it's a 5. There was never any doubt. I wish there was a separate category called "beatles" lol Personal fave is What goes on but Norwegian wood is the best one.

"now that you've made yourself love me, do you think I can change it in a day?" Holy shit. This was succinct, in a poetic sort of way. I wasn't expecting it to be over so soon. Good to know that the Crosby stills Nash and young energy continues into the solo acts. Will have to dig more into his discography because some of these lines hit hard as fuck.

I mean, he's incredible. I'm really surprised it took almost 200 days to get a Hendrix album. This has a few iconic songs, a few I hadn't heard but really love, and a few where it's clear he's just noodling. Love it

I'm a huge sucker for a concept album, and 2112 is so weird and unique and space-opera-y that I can't help but love it. But then Side B is just a collection of random songs? Kind of disappointing. Still good tho.

Really really good. Gospel Bowie was unexpected but really great. Bookends of iconic Bowie singles but everything in the middle was great too.

This was pretty interesting, I'm just not really sure if I get it? It's just a lot of howling and moody instrumentals and stuff. Idk, will have to give it another listen sometime and see if I get anything else out of it.

Very slow, melodic, dreamlike. His voice is pretty nice and the guitar is gorgeous. For some reason it just didn't grab me.

Idk, it's not bad exactly, I've just heard all this before. It's arctic monkeys, the smiths, etc. there were some moments I enjoyed but overall it was just pretty bland.

Okay, interpersonal issues aside, there's no other option but 5 here. A breakout album with this wide reaching vision, each song being unique, funny skits, it all comes together perfectly.

I feel bad rating this a 4, because it starts so strong, but it's so damn long it lost me by the end. In addition to the iconic songs everybody knows, I really enjoyed the ballad of Danny Bailey and your sister can't twist.

Alright, this was fine. Almost hilariously turn-of-the-milennium white boy rap, but I would have thoroughly enjoyed it if the lyrics were a little less repetitive. Shrug.

So much fucking fun. Just comes across as a bunch of friends making some fun tracks about smoking weed and I'm into it. Also that album cover is hilarious.

Beyond iconic. Every song is a classic. That 80s guitar, drum, and synth style hits so fuckin good and Michael is basically the one who invented it. Fuck him as a person but I can't deny the power of this album

I'm not sure why I didn't like this more. It's got that moody MGMT vibe and great guitar, good lyrics, I just didn't really feel anything when I listened to it. Maybe it'll get better with repeated listening.

While some albums on this list stand out because every one is different, others stand out because it's such a cohesive vibe. The trope inversion of having the men say sexy nothings into the mic while the actual women of the group sing the song is fantastic. I especially loved Red Light Special, Take Our Time, and (of course) Waterfalls.

As I've said before, there needs to be another ranking called "Beatles". They almost transcend ratings, not because every song is a banger, but because the effects of their work simply cannot be measured. Classic mid-late stage Beatles weirdness here. The 60s Indian-style strings and psychedelic affectations are incredible. Iconic #1 tracks aside, I love For No One and Your Bird Can Sing.

This wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. Kind of one note but their voices were good and there were some great guitar moments. I feel like I've been kind of harsh on punk stuff in this list in general, idk.

It's almost... Cacophonous? I'm not sure how best to describe Jimi Hendrix in a word but that might be it. There's so much going on a lot of the time that it just kind of locks you in place for the Experience. Great stuff.

Her voice is so mournful and so joyful at the same time. God damn. I didn't know a single one of these songs (though I enjoyed the Black Is the Color remix) but I was entranced by every one.

Went on a complete roller coaster with this because I assumed the name meant they were gay women, but I guess they're gay men instead. Then there was a disco cover of Comfortably Numb. Thoroughly interesting, lots of different styles and eras that they were playing with. I enjoyed it a lot.

Ironic is almost one of the less good songs on this album? This actually really surprised me, I was expecting to not like it. Her songwriting is great and it's a consistent ride. Shoutout to you learn, head over feet, and not the doctor.

We got the beat is the best song on here by far. I didn't dislike it, but it was so samey, and flip flopped between their punk roots and the poppy stuff kind of a lot. It was fine though.

A wonderful love letter to his artistic influences. Bob Dylan and Warhol are obvious, but I also hear a lot of Beatles and other psychedelic rock in here. Life on mars is one of my favorite songs of all time but Kooks and Bewlay Brothers were also great.

Ok, it's fine. Idk. Sounded a lot like smashing pumpkins in parts. I really feel like I should like this more than I do, but it's just not hitting for me. Maybe it'd be better live than recorded?

I had such a fun time listening to this album. Loved the Dubliners cameos too.

Iconic. Really interesting dispersal of songs, having a bunch of little bits at the start and then all the meat at the end. The crowd really got into it too, this sounds like such a fun and emotional night

Ok so I hated this. Sorry. It's like ripoff Huey Lewis with a side of weird guy who won't stop talking about how nice he is. Even the album cover creeps me out. I didn't hate Radio Radio though

This was unexpected, as someone who only knows him really for country stuff. Idk, kind of underwhelming. If you love Willie, it's probably amazing, but it's not really converting anybody I don't think.

Absolutely adored this. Is this samba or salsa? It's all sooooo fun to listen to, his voice is so great, and the album cover is absolutely gorgeous. Buscando guayaba has now been stuck in my head for like 2 days

I wasn't expecting to like this as much as I did. It's pretty juvenile (I mean that as somewhat a compliment and somewhat not) but the guitar is great and the energy is kinda top tier. "God bless the queen! Her fascist regime!" Haha

This was rough at parts (tell me why you need a maid Neil????) but it balanced out enough in the second half that I ended up really enjoying it. Alabama, words, and the gut punch that is The Needle really got me. You're on thin ice though Neil

This was sooooo repetitive at parts, idk. I think that's a quibble with the genre more than any individual artist though. Also, I thought compilation albums were banned from the list? It got better in the second half though I guess. I found myself wishing the song would end just so I could get a breath of fresh air from the incessant beat.

Ok it not that I didn't enjoy this, it's just... So repetitive. It's just highway to hell over and over again. That's a great song, so it can take you pretty far, but .. idk. I got kind of bored.

Ok, I think I get it now. This was so moody, surreal, psychedelic, emotional, depressing, any number of other words. It starts slow, but the emotional peaks in Climbing up the walls through to Lucky are jaw dropping. I will definitely be returning to this.

I really like his voice but good lord this was edgy. I know that's the point but I couldn't get past it. I do not want to know about how this guy had a boner as he killed people. Tyvm

Really really good. Burnout-basket case is such a great sequence it almost pains me to rate this not a 5 but the second half really falls off for me. I am positive I would feel differently if this was a nostalgic album for me though.

Between Okie from Muskogee and Fighting side of me, parts of this were pretty hard to get through. His voice is lovely though which made up for the cringy parts.

Ah yes, the "John does some bullshit" album. The first disk is mostly catchy radio hits with a side of weird as hell, and then the second disk is just anything goes. Despite this, it's always been one of my fave Beatles albums, probably second after sgt Pepper's. It's weird and bullshit in a uniquely enticing sort of way, and every time I listen I find something else. Did the beatles invent the word "brah"?

I was expecting to kind of not like this cus it's historically not really a style of music I prefer, but it was actually so much fun. I'm nostalgic for that mid-early 2000s sound I guess (I was ~10 at the time).

It's just like, I feel bad, but why is this here? It's just really disorganized and aimless to my ear. Some of the guitar is okay but I just felt bored and confused through most of it. The vocal work is just odd as well.

This was so fun and funky and smooth and varied. I guess I need to learn more about steely dan? This kicked so much ass.

OUTER SPACE MOTHER FUCKER! Took me a bit to get into this but once it took hold it didn't let go. I hear a lot of the influence this must have had on Gorillaz, MF doom, and Hamilton. Really interesting and unique sounds, and the spoken word piece at the end really brought it all home. The album cover is also a plus.

Ok I actually had fun listening to this. His voice is pretty great and the backup singers are nice. It's just .. idk, nothing really jumped out at me.

This was fascinating. It's a manifesto in defense of the south while also recognizing that there are legitimate reasons as to why the perception exists. Such is the dichotomy of the southern thing, I suppose. The image of the Devil making some sweet tea to prepare for George Wallace's arrival is haunting and so cool.

Had trouble deciding between 3 and 4 for this one. It is a lot of fun but I have trouble divorcing his voice and performance from the style that he is arguably still the face of. It was surprisingly crude at parts though (makin whoopee) which was fun. Also the woman in the album cover has a very modern looking haircut (to me) which is interesting. Were women rocking the faux hawk in the 50s?

This isn't really "music" in the traditional sense, it's more just a look at what the inside of David Byrne's brain sounds like. And I fuck with it harrrrdddd. It reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut in that he just makes a bunch of benign observations/statements but you come away completely amazed and you're not sure why. "It's not even worth talking about those people down there. Goo goo ga ga ga goo goo ga ga ga goo goo ga ga ga...."

This was really really good. I can imagine listening to this at the time and being absolutely gobsmacked by it. His voice get absolutely angelic at parts and the way the guitar goes from psychedelic to punk-esque to rock and back is really interesting and unique.

I love Shelter from the storm so much and Tangled up In blue was new to me but it's awesome too. This was folkier than some of the other Dylan we've had, focusing on his guitar and harmonica work. The songwriting got a little dull for me though, some of his other stuff is a teeny more varied. Rounding up to 4 stars

Boys and girls is definitely the best song on here. The rest of it is just ok. It's kind of... Jumbled? There's just a lot going on and idk if it really meshes well for me. It's like they're trying to do a 90s beatles thing. Wasn't bad though

I really liked this! I guess I just love that full, funky, groovy 70s sound. It's all as good as Listen To The Music. Will definitely be returning to this.

His voice is just so, so, so good. It feels so real, like it's just something you're hearing in the neighborhood on a hot summer night.

I'm a long time listener of indie music and one of the things this list has taught me is that indie music might be kind of bad. One or two songs from this album is alright, but altogether it's repetitive and whiny. Sorry. I do like Is This It though ngl

This was a tough one to review for me. It's just... So long, kinda dick wavey, and at times pretty boring. Not sure why they decided they needed to do a "love letter to America" but I'm not sure it feels genuine all the way through. However, the highs (shine a light, sweet Virginia, rolling dice) outweighed the lows for me.

Very solid 3. Nothing I hated, not much that grabbed me either. Her voice is nice though, and I enjoyed the variety in these songs.
