I get that punk has its place and is important for music history. It doesn't mean I enjoy listening to it at all. Sorry, people screaming and mumbling lyrics isn't really what I look for in music.
Glad to see there are other gay people contributing to this list.
My own submission, Beyoncé's RENAISSANCE is getting predictably slammed in the reviews. Yes, Cowboy Carter has more substance. RENAISSANCE was supposed to be released after CC, but Beyoncé decided to release this joyful dance record first instead in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The album was specifically tailored to celebrate safe spaces for queer folks and people of color. It's also an homage to her late uncle who introduced her to house music. But of course, most users participating in this project dismiss it out of the gate. God forbid an album be fun and joyful and give marginalized communities a reason to celebrate.
I feel similarly about BRAT though I think it will fare better among the users of this project. It took a while for this album to grow on me, but once I understood what Charli was going for, I think it's an undeniable success. It's an unapologetic embrace of club culture. It's messy and chaotic, occasionally sonically overwhelming, and surprisingly vulnerable. I'm glad I gave it a few chances before dismissing it. It's now a favorite of mine as well.
Just saying, not all "good music" needs to be white British dudes from the 70s and 80s.
