Get Rich Or Die Ryan

Album Summary

Ryan Michael Peters (born July 1, 1985), better known by the stage name Spose, is an American rapper from Wells, Maine. Although he began rapping in eighth grade, he did not pursue it as a career until after he graduated from Wells High School in 2004. As a youth, he started a rock band, The Frothy Four. Peters attended University of New Hampshire as an English major and later transferred to Suffolk University; however, he was offered a record deal when he was two classes from graduating and did not finish. Adopted the stage name Spose, he self-released his first album, Preposterously Dank in 2007. Spose released his ninth studio album, Get Rich Or Die Ryan on October 20th, 2021. It was announced to his personal YouTube channel on August 27th, 2021.

Good for Spose. It must have taken a lot of dedication listening to 1,089 much better albums before he was able to submit his own to this list.

I have browsed through Spose's discography to understand where this rapper came from and why a user would select a later album of his for this generator. And I think it was pivotal to set my expectations right about *Get Rich Or Die Ryan*, which is quite a convoluted, complex project -- no matter what your mileage is on the different genres the "King Of Maine" tackles here. Long story short, when Spose made a name for himself in the mid-2010s (a "moderate success", in his own words), it felt that the man had not recovered yet from the "old Kanye" thing ten years earlier. Interestingly, "Here We Go Again", from this 2021 album kind of rips off Ye's flow and rhythm pattern on his mid-career bop "Black Skinhead". This is the sort of detail that gives a derivative scent to some of Ryan's raps on the first disk (and since Ye's legacy is tainted forever now anyway, it's even harder to enjoy such blatant inspiration today). Let's face it: that kind of thing makes you feel Spose is often eight or ten years late to catch the bandwagon, at least at first. Worse, the strand of rap-rock formula used in that first volume borders on cringe at times. Can't understand listeners here who consider "Dudes" and "Motherfuckers" as bangers, for instance -- in spite of the good intents expressed in the lyrics of the first, roasting the worst masculine instincts. Those sorts of songs sound hackneyed and cloying to my ears. As far as I'm concerned, I vastly prefer opener "Self Destruct", splitting the difference between early Why? and more recent SoundCloud rap / mumble rap. Unfortunately, second track "Self Help!" is probably the most self-indulgent and flat emo - hardcore dud I have heard in a long time. And this contrast sets the tone for the rest of the first disk, a very mixed affair. Fortunately, I took the time to listen to the second disk, and oddly enough, I absolutely love it! Mostly returning to older boom bap types of productions, Spose doesn't try to be trendy here, he just plays awesome music. Even better, the dark tones often harnessed (as in the first three cuts "Still Selling", "My Own Way" and "Never Stop") display a sonic depth that is mostly absent from Spose's most streamed tracks, taken out of his mid-2010s albums. As a matter of fact, it's nice to see a "man of the people" -- as I readily believe Ryan to be -- age so gracefully. Under that light, it feels that the first disk was a way for him to sow his wild oats in a messy fashion so as to keep his focus for the second (why not inverting the order of those disks, then??!!). And the man can still be fun and sarcastic on that second volume, as the quite funny "Metal Band" proves. The middle section of the second disk explores turf that feels more adjacent to MacMiller, and it's also nicely pulled off. And the last three tracks wrap everything up with a synthesis of sorts, with many wonderful results ("Signing Off"'s instrumental finale is simply extraordinary). "Hotline" is also a deep cut using a free-form of jazz rap so as to provide more various flavors to the whole shebang, and it's the sort of idea that brings a lot of dynamics to that second volume. Very surprised by this one overall. Taken as a whole, it's a sheer mess, but if you go into details, there were ways to create a one-volume rap album that would have been fabulous. Grading the thing accordingly, then. 3.25/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 4. (2.5/5 for the first disk, and 4/5 for the second, but I'm mostly taking the latter into account here). 8.25/10 for more general purposes: 5 + 3.25 Number of albums from the original list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 465 Albums from the original list I *might* include in mine later on: 288 Albums from the original list I won't include in mine: 336 ----- Number of albums from the users list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 45 Albums from the users list I *might* select for mine later on: 56 Albums from the users list I won't select for mine: 107 (including this one -- as good as some of its bops are, it's still too much of a mess to fell "essential") --- Émile: voir ma toute dernière réponse sous le disque *Triage* au-dessus

I’m glad o didn’t check how long the album was before I started because I would have gone in with a bad attitude. I was 3/4 through before that attitude kicked in, and by then it was too late. I liked Dudes.

Seems like there a lot more going on here, than I had time to take in today. I’m liking what I heard though, it’s got more of a punk ethos than a lot of the punk records on the original list. DIY but with talent and something to say. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and go 5 stars, to try and make sure I listen to more when I can find the time. Nice recommendation OP.

This was overall sort of forgettable. The definition of a 3 star album (for me)... ...EXCEPT "Dudes". That was an awesome song and I had to stop what I was doing and read the lyrics. What a banger. Great lyrics and samples. Rest of the album was not as good, but "Dudes" alone is worth an extra star. "Motherfuckers (Bring You Down)" was a fun song too.

It definitely has “white boy” rapper vibes but I got more Dave than Eminem. I liked the personal elements and there were far more shreddy guitar licks than I expected on the album. All in all, a good find and one that I will re-listen to, even at 96min run-time.

Not sure this needed to be 90+ minutes long. Especially since this guy rapped about being a dad of 4 kids for a quarter of the songs. I know more about this guys life than most of my coworkers. Lyrically he has skills and combines humor within the raps that make it entertaining at times. Several of the songs also offer some unique perspective that you don’t hear much in rap. Overall it was decent for as corny as some of it was. 6.3/10

90+ minutes? I guess it better be good... Got around to listening to this today. Some of it was pretty good. But man it went on for far too long. I feel like a strong editorial hand might help here. Not a fan but I don’t hate it.

What an insane, fascinating album; I have so many thoughts. First, spose music that is not called I’m awesome is something I did not know existed. Second, this is one of the corniest rap albums I’ve ever listened to rivaling only tom Macdonald and hopsin. Third, it’s the most shallow and obvious “I’m gonna speak my mind on everything going on in the world” that’s more of a window into Ryan’s psyche than anything Rather than just recount all of the dumb stuff he talks about I’m gonna try to describe spose based on this album: He’s a recently divorced father of four who really likes tennis and smoking weed. He apparently had a rough childhood (that I thought sonically sounded straight out of illmatic right before he name dropped nas) and struggles with mental health and being a father and seeing hot women on instagram. Rather than actually engage in politics he takes the teenage redditor position of “everyone’s evil and bad” Finally, he likes to think he respects women with a song dedicated to how cool they are then undermines that with literally every single bar on the Instagram model song. Normally, cringe like this would’ve made me turn it off right away but the beats and flow were just good enough and the lyrics just funny and ridiculous enough that it kept me going through 96!! Minutes. Basically

I can’t deny this LP has heart, but man is it dumb as fuck. Would’ve loved to see the audio tech’s face on some of the vocal takes here, and can’t imagine how much this guy spent on studio time to make nearly 100 minutes of Limp Bizkit revival meets AJR.

The music on this album is ok, but it's way too long. The first half "Get Rich" an alternative rock album, the second half "Die Ryan" a rap album. The performance and songs are nice, but the lyrics fail. Even considering they are supposed to be funny a lot of the time, they are shallow and all about frustration and blaming others.

Hearing a bar about "sus amogus" 90 fucking minutes into this godforsaken album felt like biting the curb. It's not horrible. The flows are pretty good at times, but Jesus Christ, this has to be the corniest shit I've ever heard in my life.

Definitely better than you would expect. Though definitely long, there's enough creativity both lyrically and musically that it stays pretty interesting. Certainly "Dudes" is a standout, but overall i like the cheeky/fun style delivered here.

I think I was turned off by Spose due to his silly music video's but listening to Get Rich or Die Ryan has been fun. I'll check out some of his other albums/EP's based on this reintroduction.

World War Blues is cool. Similar flow to MC Lars. Motherfuckers (Bring You Down) is a great song. Metal Band is also real good.

I've tried to listen to this album a couple of times, and I still don't know what to make of it. At first I thought it was two different albums mixed together, but nope, it's all one thing. I like the dude's style overall. It doesn't feel coherent, but there's also nothing wrong with liking to make a few different types of music. I think a double album is a bit much, which is why I didn't give it a higher score, but I also appreciate this dude's versatility 3/5

Why no, it's German. "Get Rich or The Ryan". This is a really mixed bag. On the one hand, there's a lot of tracks in here that I enjoy. However - it's an hour and half long, for crying out loud. That's too much for anything. Especially when, for a lot of this album, the flow is an offensively nasal monotone. Ryan clearly has some talent, and he can spit out the rhymes - but why on earth did he elect to include the drab, when he's overstuffed a double album. I'd be prepared to go 4 stars for this, but the duration and the adenoidal efforts must ding it.

The first half of this was pretty fun - kind of a mix of emo rap and just a straight up indie rock record, with some varied and inventive stuff in there as well (like the doo-wop inspired Dudes). The second half was a step down though as it just went for a full-on hip-hop approach - the charm of the first half didn’t really carry over and it was a lot less original and interesting, and really highlighted the quite weak vocals. The idea of a first half rock / second half hip-hop record is good, but that second side just wasn’t executed too well, and the mega run time of 97 minutes really started to weigh the album down

A fun glimpse into the world of post-Hamilton white rapping. Healthy to have reference points that aren't just Eminem. I don't care for Spose and I didn't like this album, but I do prefer drawing this kind of thing to when people just sent in FotM pop music.
