Mouth Sounds

Album Summary

This album has been submitted by a user and is not included in any edition of the book.

Mouth Sounds is a mashup mixtape by American musician Neil Cicierega. The mixtape was self-released by Cicierega on April 27, 2014. Consisting of mashups pairing Top 40 hits of the 1980s and 1990s, Mouth Sounds received positive reviews from music critics. It received a second installment, Mouth Silence, three months later, which followed the same mashup format, a third installment, Mouth Moods, in 2017, and a fourth installment, Mouth Dreams, in 2020. Mouth Sounds received mostly positive reviews from critics. Katie Rife, writing for The A.V. Club, called the mixtape "brilliant," citing its ability to toy with the listener's nostalgia held towards the songs included, and wrapped up her review by suggesting the album to those that enjoy the thought of "dropping acid at a Media Play going-out-of-business sale."[6] Ben Simon of Music Putty also wrote of Mouth Sounds' ability to relate to the listener's childhood memories, writing, "nostalgia is the album’s unifying theme," and citing the third track, "D'oh," as an example of when it "is taken to its most equally incredible and horrific extreme."

Hey! The Tears in rain monologue is in this one too. Guess it will go down in history. But not as much as all-star will. It will be passed down to generations through memory when WW3 inevitably wipes out all human connectivity and the internet. Then still, the years will start coming. And they don't stop coming. We must be fed to the rules, and hit the ground running. Cause didn't they say not to live for fun? Your brain gets smart, but your head gets dumb. So much to do so much to see, so what's wrong with taking the backstreets? Well, you never know if you don't go, you'll never shine if you don't glow. Hey now. You're a five star

Hahaha what the fuck, I didn't expect to see this on here in a million years. This guy is insanely prolific when it comes to internet culture. You might not recognize his name, but if you were online for at least a microsecond in the 2000s, you'll most likely recognize at least one thing he did. "Brodyquest", "Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny", "Potter Puppet Pals", or his musical project "Lemon Demon". Maybe some better representation would have been his genuine, non-jokey album "Spirit Phone" (geeky synthpop, it's pretty good), but I can definitely also get behind how funny throwing this hour long album with Smash Mouth and Full House samples at unsuspecting users truly is. And it's a genuine banger at times - songs like "Daft Mouth" and "Mullet with Butterfly Wings" have no business working as well as they do. It's extremely stupid, creative fun and I refuse to pretend I'm above it. A 4/5 from me. I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but sometimes you just listen to an album and say to yourself: "Yep, what a concept".

Interesting choice, although I can’t quite get behind having this on the list. When I hear Daft Punk and think back to their live album this is a pale shadow. Not terrible, but not really before you die worthy in my book.

Mouth Sounds is a mashup mixtape from 2014. As far as I can remember mashups were a popular thing around 2000-2005. I cannot find a thing this album adds to the tracks released a decade earlier by dj's (f.e. Soulwax's Dewaele brothers) and mainstream artists like Kylie Minogue. Bills Like Jean Spirit sounds annoying and clumsy with the voices of Cobain and Jackson fighting for the spotlight. Mashups are a nice trick, but most of the time they just sound gimmicky and outdated.

This is some sort of troll job of an album right. Every song has some sort of smash mouth mixed in and sometimes it’s comical other times it’s stupidly annoying. Some of the mashups are creative and not bad to listen to but some songs are so terrible to hear that it bordered frustration. This was one to avoid. 2.1/10

Listening to 1-2 tracks can be amusing, but then it just gets annoying. Individual tracks 3-4 stars, but 2 for the album.

This album wasn't on Spotify. I listened to a few songs from mouth silence instead and decided that it was dumb and annoying. 2/5.
