As expected, harmonies be on point, yo! Some quality guitar work and some awesome dropout sentiments.

Introduced via 91.3 WYEP awhile back and enjoyed, but never got around to an album. Tight jam-bandy with a fun fusion-ness to them. Remember hearing they're from Austin, or thereabouts, and that tracks, because there's a bit of that 'Keep Austin weird' element to them. The drumming on each song was rad, but especially intriguing on BURNISHED and ANVIL EVERYTHING (simply bad-assery)! The guitar work on BESS ST. is mesmerizingly sweet!
Mick Picks: NEVER LET ME DOWN AGAIN, STRANGELOVE, BEHIND THE WHEEL. While I would've preferred a tighter album, I also enjoy that Depeche Mode didn't conform to those standards, per their moody, nihilistic aura.
As the album continued, I enjoyed it more and more. Definitely a 'moods' album (not sure if 'moods' needed quotations, but I'm leaving them there anyways).
Was fluctuating between a 2 and 3... and then I had to listen to extended silence before he performed his poetry slam.

I forgot how fantastic this was. CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKING imo is one of the greatest rock n' roll songs created. Sticks to a formula that, unfortunately, isn't replicated often. Pure fun, for funs sake!!
Quite groovy and enjoyable. Prog fun
cool piano stuff yo
bam, pow, boom... energy and enjoyment and classics. Where Metal meets pop, but doesn't sound like pop. I imagine this helped stamp their legendary legitimacy.
Indie rock intelligence that deserved its breakthrough to mainstream success.
Enjoyed the raw power and punk punches. SEARCH AND DESTROY, GIMME DANGER, I NEED SOMEBODY, catchy and garage-y, but in a good way.
Chuck D is where music and message meet. Meshed with some heavy metal-hip hop and you have a groundbreaking labyrinth, that has since been oft-copied.
Music for robots, enjoyed by humans. Just what the robots want.
I continue to appreciate Cash's music as I grow older. Also, a nod to the production of this album. They do a great job of simply capturing the moment and allowing it mark it's moment in history.
Immediately caught my ear. I feel like this is also engineered for the nihilist crowd and empathetic art collectives. Not sure what the Venn diagram looks like, but anyways, generally liked this.
The band that, IMO, best exemplifies weaving multiple genres into a sound that actually sounds authentic and quite frankly, freakin great!
Kick ass instrumentals. RUN TO THE HILLS is so energetically awesome. HALLOWED BE THY NAME and GANGLAND also strong, enjoyable metal tracks.
Enjoyed this much more that expected... and I was expecting it to be a tedious endeavor. And as much as I like Bowie, I wanted to spite the curator of this list for their incessant Bowie fawning. That said, strong enjoy!
feels inventive: super enjoyably groovy
Dug this considerably. Some cool hippydelic groovy grooves tossed in and some super cool session work from the guitarists, and other instrumentalists. The documentary really added to my appreciation of Joni and the rest of the Laurelite's (my nickname I came up with 30 seconds ago).
hits galore. Much enjoy. What a voice
Much enjoy. Subtle grungyness, but with some panache and some super enjoyable softer elements, that draw the listener in to the emotions. Wish I would've met this album much earlier than I have.
Hecks yes! Smoooooooth and silky and transitions melting so seamlessly. The fade out and in YOUTHFUL EXPRESSION was sweet as Gushers.
Smooth, sultry, sexy
Album includes the smell of rubber during a Trans Am burnout
prime 'dance around the room like you're a professional ribbon performer' music. Annie Lennox ~ What a legendary and instantly recognizable voice
Solid punk blues-rock hybrid and I'm disappointed they've alluded me this long.
Funkaristic fantasticness. I don't know if Jorge Ben is friends with George Clinton, but boy do I wish they are.
Enjoy the ‘satirical meets impressive musical proficiency’ that’s included in nearly every Zappa project.
Tasty nostalgia grooves. Will listen more. Far out
Legendary words guy
So funky it breaks the funk-o-meter!!
One of my favorite albums (Understand why people might feel differently). I've listened to this so much, but still end up hearing something different that catches my attention. ETERNAL LIFE probably a top 10 song for me.
One of best rock voices of the era, or frankly of all time. And musically, just pure classic rock beauty.
I enjoy this era immensely. Trying to encapsulate the correct wordage to describe, but just feel-good rockabilly with a side of song writing genius. Packs a punch, and f*ck I'll say it, this is punk.
Feels like a causal stroll through a quiet metropolis with a smooth cigarette and a calm demeanor. Epitomizes 'smooth'
Catchy as heck. Be still and E-MAIL MY HEART
Album still holds up, and this is considering I struggle listening to most, or basically anything they manufactured after this.
Most likely best consumed with portable CD player (skip proof), whilst roaming a bustling, rude metropolis. The kind of place where cabs beep, men with fancy hair gel walk by distracted; their fragile masculinity masking parental disassociation, yelling 'buy, buy, buy, sell, sports, beer.' A child cries, a pigeon smiles, and a dog yearns for more... more treats, more fetch, more life.
In the words of Ashley Schaeffer, Schaeffer BMW, “I can feel it in my plums!”
Hits in so many different ways; arena rock anthems, story-telling gems, and simply, great track curation. It doesn't matter the speed or tempo of the song, Springsteen and the band are purely evocative, in the most generous sense.
Quintessential Tom Petty. A poet with a knack for entertainment and top-class lyricism and song writing. BREAKDOWN has one of my favorite intros in all of the Rock and the Roll genre.
Impulsively grabbed for candy necklace. I feel parched.
Deep cuts aren't remarkable IMO, while still being good. But, boy oh boy, are YOU CAN'T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT, GIMME SHELTER, COUNTRY HONK, and MONKEY MAN, worth their weight in gold.
How has Shuggie evaded me. So freakin' cool. Will be bumping this much more. Fun fact: played with Frank Zappa, which did not surprise in the least.
This is why a genre like 'indie music' exists. Allows for musicians to experiment, but not purely out of selfishness, but to showcase enjoyable song craftsmanship, that toys with improvisation, that has a purpose. So much to appreciate; felt like the soundtrack to a beautifully directed Mexican adventure film.
Keith Moon's drumming can wake the sleepiest of souls.
PINBALL WIZARD will always satiate the nostalgia urge. CHRISTMAS is such a perfectly weird song. Guitar paces this super cool strange hypnotic harmony. And then later with SALLY SIMPSON and I'M FREE. This album has style changes that don't stray from the story line, but rather direct the listener to ride along with Tommy's journey.
well crafted album with the obvious celebrated classics! They sure know how to design a blues-rock tune or 2.
smells like cigarettes, pool tables, and awesomeness!
Playing catch-up on old albums, and I agree with the sentiment of previous reviews. While this is really catchy and super enjoyable, HOW did they not include Random Access Memories to this list?
Trying to wax poetic, but just simply want to describe this is, fantastic Rock N' roll for Rock N' Rolls sake. Metal, ballads, Pop Rock that doesn't reek of corporate radio engineered influence (even though it might). Will always remember a super random, yet enlightening introduction to SINCE I'VE BEEN LOVING YOU. While eating fries at the O in Oakland (Pittsburgh), a weathered woman sporting a mostly lit cigarette, drew this up on the jukebox. Not sure why it caught my attention; allowing a song to narrate what she was enduring in that moment. Was it a melodramatic examination from a 12(?) year old kid? Probably, but I can pinpoint that moment... and that's the power and grandeur of music.
‘I’m the Man Who loves You’ ~ melancholy madness. The ‘Helter Skelter’ guitar lick trailed by horns was delightful. Other highlights ~ * Pot Kettle Black * Poor Places Every song is at worst, catchy + melodic / and at best, subtle classics that stand the test of time. The entire album has an effortlessness masking how incredibly complex and difficult the process must’ve been. Fantasic frenzied excellence.
First 4 songs I loved (highlighted by my favorite of album ‘I Wanna Be Adored’). Middle of album felt a little repetitive. Closers, ‘I Am the Resurrection’ and ‘Fools Gold’ seemed to right the ship, so to speak. Another listen may bump score from a 3 to 4.
Loved the album. I hate giving it a 3, but songs can get a bit repetitive (which isn’t a negative, if that makes sense). Their influence is very apparent and a band I would’ve LOVED to see live!!
I probably wanted to like it more than I did, but sheesh, if beating a dead horse was an album.
Chester will always be a Top 10 rock singer for me! Is this rating based on nostalgia? Probably. I’d give a 4.5 (but I’m going to give a 5 solely based on complete listen-ability).
Exceptional singing from legends. Obviously seasonal. Makes me wonder why we don’t have a collection of awesome Independence Day jamz! Curious about this Phil Spector. Gonna do some additional research about his life and career.
Prince of the Rodeo (f*ck yeah!!). Mad I hadn’t heard this much sooner
This slowly, slowly waddled so that Morning Phase could beautifully prance in the forest. Hate giving this a 2, but I LOVE Odelay and also really enjoy Morning Phase, so there’s that, I guess??
Sooooo good. The hits keep coming from Hitsville USA~Motown (if in Detroit, and you have time, visit Motown Musuem!!).
Cool album. Liked the mixture of genres.
Dug this a lot!
Great country blues record. And specifically Mark Knopfler’s guitar tells a story without speaking a word. Sultans of Swing is obviously a classic, and a masterpiece and Southbound Again really shines!
Wow! I remember hearing great things about this, but only heard a select few. Great great album. 4.25 but more listens may bump that up.
What a time to be alive
Loved this. Will retrieve this again for additional listens. Heard some shades of Daft Punk.
She’s travel a lot of places looking for Joy. Don’t we all Lucinda… don’t we all!
The epitome of a smooth record. Hate to simplify, because the Jazz/Hip Hop fusion was superb. Through English translation, you could see why MC Solaar received the acclaim he did. Loved track, “Caroline.” (Note to self: learn French).
F*ckin’ A!! Guitar riffs that spontaneously light your Marlboro red, and songs that rattle your IROC-Z. Obviously, there are at least 4 timeless hits that are in constant rotation on Nike Monarch radio, but the guitar work on ‘Drop Dead Legs’ and ‘Top Jimmy’ are ear tickling gems! And kudos to Michael Anthony and Alex bring the rhythm and groove (especially during Girl Gone Bad)!
Gets an Indica 5 star. Catchy is an understatement.
Cool poems. Honestly, I’ve always appreciated Cohen, but never really seek out to listen
Remember when Kick Push came out. It was refreshing and simple, but that does a disservice how awesome and catchy it still is. Some cool songs ~ American Terrorist and the cover of Daydreamin’. Overall, I think the album left a lot to be desired, however.
Yeah yeah f*ck yeah!! Glad I finally listened to an album of theirs. Always been intrigued by Karen O’s voice. Of course ‘Heads Will Roll’ gets its due praise as a party rock anthem, but another that could join in that category is ‘Shame and Fortune.’ Other highlights for me were ‘Skeletons’ and ‘Dragon Queen.’
Sounds like the soundtrack of a party with Jesus, Sasquatch, and your imaginary friend Quinton (obviously induced by one helluva of a crazy drug cocktail). Fantastic psychedelic musicianship!!! Ohh yeah and Janis’s voice 😍
Can hear how it most likely inspired future bands. Can also detect how Poly Styrene was probably taking the piss out of society in general.
Grooved to this.
Some great tunes: De La Soul with the assist in MAMA GAVE BIRTH TO THE SOUL CHILDREN. Others, WRATH OF MADNESS, and A KING AND QUEEN CREATION. Enjoyable intro album from the Queen.
For my moneys worth, Hall of Fame rock opera!
Kick ass album. Forgot about how fantastically they can meld harmonies and instrumentals (especially SAVE A PRAYER). Other highlights (aside from the timeless RIO and HUNGRY LIKE THE WOLF) were LAST CHANCE ON THE SUBWAY, and the haunting intro to THE CHAUFFEUR
The term ‘Folktronic’ is a great description for this album, especially for STARS ALL SEEM TO WEEP (terrific song). Another highlight was COULDN’T CAUSE ME HARM. Ultimately, while I recognize this album was mixed really well, I feel like it was missing something to make it superb.
Tremendous bouquet of country rock music. Lyrical effectiveness and earworm instrumentals.
A bizarre album that put me in a jovial mood. Revisited NO GOOD TRYING and OCTOPUS to listen to the composition. Favorite track: LONG GONE.
Phenomenal singing and catchy tunes. Reminds me of going to my childhood barber and listening to big bands while old guys talked about random local happenings.
I had a tough time writing something that wasn’t verbose, or sound phoney… Anyway, to me this is songwriting brilliance. Maybe I’m just a victim of gravitating to emotionally vulnerable music.
Sooo many tasty grooves. Nearly every song draws you in with an infectious guitar hook (~ think Interpol, the Strokes, Kaiser Chiefs). Really regretting missing them in concert last year!!
This is going to be on heavy rotation during nightly Indica hours ~ especially WATERMELON MAN.
Heavy nostalgia with this one. Spent many a Sunday night enjoying scrumptious spirits and listening to blues music with my Pops. The frenzied TIGER IN YOUR TANK and I'VE GOT MY MOJO WORKING are like bourbon soaked triple espresso's.
First half, while filled with quality songs, kind of runs together. But this leads to some indie dance pop fantastic-ness on side 2!
GD*mnit Kanye, if this is an art project, ala Andy Kaufman, time to abandon project. If it isn't, please someone help this guy. No cOsIgN WhAtEvEr tHiS Is
This is one cool Cat. Lyrical beauty
JT + Timbaland + the Neptunes = Magic. The sound of the intro to Senorita, mixed with the opening of a LionsHead Pilsner, meant the night would go from good to GREAT!
I took the NIGHTTRAIN and met MR. BROWNSTONE who spoke of the magical PARADISE CITY. Initially, I thought he was OUT TA GET ME. But when we arrived, he proclaimed, "WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE!"
While Morrison clearly gets the universal recognition, it’s Krieger, Manzarek and Densmore that give the heart beat, soul and authentic grit!
Delicious grooves that dance throughout the brainwaves!! From the subtle introduction with SUBTLE WINDS, CRYING BEASTS melting into BLACK MAGIC WOMEN/GYPSY QUEEN. The frenzied INCIDENT AT NESHABUR and SE A CABO are obvious crowd pleasing jamz!!
Lovely record and very accurately titled.
dug the clangy guitars. Remember when this came out. Was a welcome surprise.
Highlights: ACE OF SPADES (obviously) and CAPRICORN (catchy musicianship). Side note: yes there is a song called JAILBAIT and it is about what you think it is (yikes).
Wonderful fusion. Can dance, sway, tap the foot and use as daily background music. ONCE IN A LIFETIME is a top 100 song for me (if not top 5).
Awesome, catchy grooves! WHAT IT COMES DOWN TO, Sunshine (GO AWAY TODAY) and YOU WALK YOUR WAY were highlights for me!
top tier bars
What a fantastic groovy collection
When time travel becomes legal, I will be at this concert
hip hop + Kung Fu = superb rap battle musical theatre
The terms “honest“ and “raw” get thrown around way too often when describing certain music. But I can’t think of a better description than that. Beautiful musical artistry by allowing the lyrics and instruments to paint a picture (nod to Warhol of course).
Talk about beauty, mixed with experiment, mixed with careful caution to ensure the listener can appreciate the experience! Vocal hypnosis with magical, yet subtle, guitar heroics and a soothing D&B heartbeat.
As the album continued, I enjoyed it more and more. Definitely a 'moods' album (not sure if 'moods' needed quotations, but I'm leaving them there anyways).
An album to feel general nostalgia or just to sing PENNYROYAL TEA or POLLY, or WHERE DID YOU SLEEP LAST NIGHT whilst doing very mundane, domesticated activities.
Songwriting expertise mixed with a vocal rawness (ala Joni Mitchell). Read a description of both musicians stating "they represent the Power of music without spectacle." And I think that sums up this album perfectly. You're drawn to the lyrics, like a thirsty cat to milk. Of course, FAST CAR and TALKIN' BOUT A REVOLUTION are timeless, but other highlights were the quick paced WHY? and MOUNTAINS O'THINGS.
I always liked their music, but starting to become a real Fan after ingesting the albums. Super fun and energetic and most importantly, enjoyable!!
maybe my favorite Kings of Leon era: Caleb explicitly getting haircuts from Tennessee Mountain dwellers. Do I care that most of lyrics are nonsensical? Not one bit, because the background to it is rock and roll in its purest ~ fun
what a cool, groovy, fun album. Not going to wax poetic about jazz albums, but I appreciate the art and musical intelligence to accomplish.
Hadn't listened to much SZA, but really enjoyed this. Smooth, subtle, sexy. Like sipping a nice Bourbon on the rocks.
Pop music genius is probably an insult to reflect Sly's work, and the Fam of course. And to watch Questlove's doc on Sly's work, truly shows what immense music knowledge and instincts he has/had. He made something incredibly difficult, look elementary.
For someone who has a growing appreciation of the folk arts, what a freakin' classic. Heaters galore!!
Love the mixing of this album. Felt like floating through the through a meadow whilst soaking in all the colors of the sun.
Definitely some cool bipity bops. Gravitated more to the upbeat tunes, SHINING STAR and AFRICANO
Takes a song or 2 to settle into the vibe. But once you're in, the ride is funkadelically delicious. Highlights: TIME TO GET TOGETHER ~ A FUNKY SPACE REINCARNATION ~ YOU CAN LEAVE, BUT IT'S GOING TO COST YOU
Wonderful take on the Blues, mixed with literal music escapism. While the hardships they faced must have been unimaginably terrifying, I'm glad they were able to find a community to introduce them to a wider audience!
Cutting grass, smokin' grass, BBQin,' All ages backyard Summer party ~ this album fits so many categories, and also provides an unearned nostalgia (I.E. I wasn't born yet, but feel like I experienced this concert... confusing, I know)!
Lots of lyrical gems. Of course, LIKE A ROLLING STONE and HIGHWAY 61 get the universal acclaim they deserve. JUST LIKE TOM THUMB'S BLUES and TOMBSTONE BLUES really illustrate Bobby Z's storytelling abilities. Fav track is the delirious, BALLAD OF A THIN MAN.
Quite enjoyed the curation of this album. If you want some psychedelia... it's got that. If you want some great, perfectly crafted pop-rock tracks... it's got that too. And toss in a little R&B too.
Cool aura on this album, which helps illustrate what the Cure is. Occasionally complicated, but unapologetically themselves! Probably one of those albums that provides a background to what a band is. With that said, while I enjoyed the concept, nothing really stuck out to me.
Quite a few songs I don't think I've heard. While very recognized, I don't know if the Cure gets recognized enough for their subtle and genius instrumental displays. Really enjoyed LULLABY, FASCINATION STREET and PRAYERS FOR RAIN.
Grooves, vibes, and honest beauty. Obviously opening with WHAT'S GOING ON might go down as one of greatest album openers. My album highlights are MERCY MERCY ME (THE ECOLOGY), INNER CITY BLUES (MAKE ME WANNA HOLLER)
Dug this considerably. And kudos to helping, indirectly, to introduce me to Chromeo, my fav Electro-Funk-Dance bands.
Fantastic ambience, but very, very repetitive. Distinctively haunting and beautiful voice. This rating is in no way an indictment on Billie Holiday as a performer + legendary voice + generational talent.
See: Dewey Cox (Walk Hard) coke fueled punk era. Great intro to a punk reggae amalgam. Last 3 tracks really begin to show their depth that will be noticed on future albums.
Kick ass album. Between the exhilarating start with WAR PIGS, PARANOID, and other well know hit, IRON MAN, to subtle genre hybrid tracks, HAND OF DOOM, this album bucks conventional definition of Heavy Metal. Another highlight for me was the stirring ELECTRIC FUNERAL. With additional listens, I might be convinced to attach an additional star to my rating.
Normally, if I said something could be 'excessive,' I'd probably refer to said matter, unfavorably. But with Arcade Fire, overabundance equals beautiful disorder.
Pleasant and utterly fantastic voice. Lots of innovative drum fills and layered vocals. Delightfully bewildering lyrics too, like in the opener, LUCKIE, "Well, there's an avenue of Devil who believe in stone/You can meet the captain at the dead-end zone/What Devil doesn't know is that Devil can't stay/Doesn't know he's seen his day"
Some cool samples and music, but through research, questionable if McLaren did anything to be credited as an artist.
Guitar, vocal and pure rock heroics. Can only imagine what this sounded like bouncing off the Monte Carlo upholstery amidst a cloud of Marlboro smoke.
Garth Hudson ties this together to make this what it is, iconic! And while we can point to Crosby, Still, Nash for their delightful harmonies, the Band should be noted for their peculiarly distinct and outstanding vocal combinations.
Listened to this quite a bit over the years, and every time I listen, I hear some new, cool, groovy instrumental gem. Lyrically they are a bit of an enigma. A band that writes a song like 'Under the Bridge' but also some ridiculously absurd, but catchy 'Suck My Kiss'. Growing up on them, you get used to that being their identity. But let me say again, instrumentally, they are must listen for their punk/funk fusion pioneering sounds.
very catchy background music and I imagine a lot of misplaced candy necklaces were shattered on the concrete of U.K. warehouse floors... oh did I mention random pill consumption. This album smells like a subtle Rave.
Was really diggin' the album and then CRYIN' TO BE HEARD really took it up a notch. Strangely enough, I hadn't listened to the entire album, but absolutely adore 'John Barleycorn Must Die.' Another startlingly groovy song, AM WHAT WAS OR AM I WHAT I AM. Super freaking catchy!!
Some great jamz and some fillers. This album took them to another level. Not my favorite in their catalog, but still very enjoyable, nonetheless.
Didn't realize how many songs I remember. Always was a big fan of Common's cadence and tempo. Lyrics defining life in Chi town with witty, contemplative wordplay
Full disclosure: not a Jazz connoisseur, which most reviewers would probably admit, as well. My grade goes against most of my voting criteria, which is to say, I might not listen to this a great deal, but I can still appreciate how complicated, intricate, funky and impressive this is.
Pure fun Brit Pop-rock. Some cool structured psychedelia mixed in with witty narrative lyrics.
Generally pleasant listening and soothing voice. Some occasionally enjoyable guitar composition, but the drum clicks got distracting. Wanted to enjoy this more, but tedium got the best of me.
Between the SoCal-Laurel Canyon themes, the storytelling, the guitar brilliance, the excellent harmonies, and especially having Joe Walsh spread his vocal wings (pun intentional) and belt out a ballad, this is purely majestic. VICTIM OF LOVE ~ NEW KIND IN TOWN ~ LIFE IN THE FAST LANE just straight cAsH mOnEy!!
I love the bluesy-honky tonk, CRIPPLED INSIDE and some of the psychedelia throughout the album. I'd be lying if I said I adore IMAGINE (the song). It's always been a song I respect, but don't particularly enjoy stomaching. As with CRIPPLED, I also prefer IT'S SO HARD, and HOW DO YOU SLEEP? for similar reasons. At times, it feels like the album confuses itself. And I repeat, score doesn't fully reflect the significance this album, and Lennon, had on rock music.
Waited to cut grass to this album for a multitude of reasons. Purely terrifically fantastically awesome n'at. It's got psychotic frenzied singing, guitar licks and catchy grooves that you can play at a baseball game, a cookout, or to impress your drunk uncle who most likely snuck you your first sip of Jack Daniels.
Dug this considerably. Especially, EMPTY NEST, THROUGH THE IRON GATE, THE FUN POWDER PLOT, THIS IS OUR LOT. They do a really cool blend of surf rock, melancholy tones, and shades of punk, oddly. The Smiths meets Alt-J.
Album starts perfectly with DIRTY BOOTS and jumps into a cascade of perfectly reckless sound with TUNIC and MARY-CHRIST. Glad to have finally listened to this entire album to give context to KOOL THING and TITANIUM EXPOSE, which I feel are legendary.
score based on talent. As with most Jazz, a lot of it blends together to form one long song, but I had a generally satisfactory time listening. +1 due to some really cool solos that caught my attention... referring to Jeremy Grey (Wedding Crashers) "Rule #6 – Do not sit in the corner and sulk. It draws attention in a negative way. Draw attention to yourself, but on your own terms." This applies
Mick Picks: NEVER LET ME DOWN AGAIN, STRANGELOVE, BEHIND THE WHEEL. While I would've preferred a tighter album, I also enjoy that Depeche Mode didn't conform to those standards, per their moody, nihilistic aura.
That hip Nile Rogers sound is ubiquitous throughout the album and the familial familiarity is quite obvious with the Sledge Sisters singing. (Mick Picks: THINKING OF YOU, WE ARE FAMILY, and super groove guitar lick in ONE MORE TIME) Ohh, to be a part of the era in which the Pittsburgh Pirates enjoyed success, to the soundtrack of WE ARE FAMILY... lucky jagoffs!
Disappointed I didn't bother myself with prior suggestions to listen to Love. The vibes, ebbs and flows, and just general mood of the album was impressive. I gave an almost immediate relisten to ALONE AGAIN OR and A HOUSE IS NOT A MOTEL. The drums were the perfect heartbeat throughout the song collection. And the guitar interludes were super catchy and hip! Glad to be introduced to this album. Additional Mick Pick: BUMMER IN THE SUMMER and YOU SET THE SCENE to close out this gem.
Remarkle vocals and sounds like a summer breeze under a shade tree. Some beautifully, understated instrumentals. ASTRAL WEEKS, and SWEET THINGS are my Mick Picks. CYPRUS AVENUE is a cool change of pace. Would've enjoyed a few more of these tracks to add some buoyancy.
Was fluctuating between a 2 and 3... and then I had to listen to extended silence before he performed his poetry slam.
Hot take: I love side 2. Such a weird, fun eclectic group of songs that pack a punch. From side 1, top picks from said side are probably OCTOPUS’S GARDEN and I WANT YOU (peak Lennon blues). As I relisten to some of the deeper cuts, I may revisit review to give a 5 (see: MAXWELL’S SILVER HAMEMR).
Some iconic anthems... mixed with some tolerable tracks. But still AC/DC deserves there flowers, nonetheless.
Got this album in during the evening neighborhood walk, which proved a suitable soundtrack. Top picks were WILLOW and IVY, but another listen could add to the list. As with a lot of Taylor, paying attention to the lyrics is paramount. Quality storytellin' n'at.
Singing with delight, raw emotion, and at times with torment. What I envision quality Soul music should encapsulate. Legendary voice!!
While most of the songs kind of meld together, I did enjoy the dark, weird, experimental nature of it. *~*~ think DRACULA'S LAMENT (Forgetting Sarah Marshall).
Maybe because I gravitate to fantastic harmonies and quick hitters with memorable riffs, I assign this a 5er. I really enjoy Abbey Road, but there's something that hits the sweet spot with this collection. I was trying to pick a particular song to highlight, but they are all so strikingly tremendous.
quick hitters, awesome punk meets garage sentiment. Mick's Picks ~ JEEPSTER, MAMBO SUN (earworm hooks galore), MONOLITH
Starting in the middle of a musical sentence and moving in both directions at once. - John Coltrane... well said.
Genre bending, hit after hit. Lots of heartbreak juxtaposed with exceptional vocal heroics.
Some tasty country rock ditty’s with a mix of some really cool wordsmithin.’ Super fun to hear a young Emmylou Harris. Tracks can get a bit repetitive, but neat guitar and steel pedal work. Also, respect to Gram, fellow UFO admirer.
Bands could only hope to have 1 hit song, let alone a handful of mega-hits on 1 album. I've always gravitated towards BULLET THE BLUE SKY and IN GOD'S COUNTRY. They have a slightly different instrumental feel to the rest of the album, which is not to discredit those other tracks.
Probably a top 20 shower singing album. On another, 2 of the best mullets in music history.
Catchy lyrics and emotive vocals. Enjoyed the operatic quality of the album. Really helps bring the listener in for a musical voyage.
I was really groovin' to this. I get why they influenced so many of my favorite bands. I usually demerit based on repetitive-ness, but in this case, I appreciate that they lean into it!
Probably your favorite classic rock stars, favorite live album... and for good reason. The honest take of what a live concert should be. Subtle errors, weirdos yelling 'wooo' too much and the ever-present concert friend that insists on storm whistling, for storm whistling sake. Frampton's instrumentals take you on a journey that few rock guitarists can, especially with the talk box identifying his presence. Side note: classmate of David Bowie's.
Great to revisit this. Cigar lit, Bourbon drank, and moon illuminating this gem! The epitome of fun. You can smell the sweaty denim and Jersey Northern Red Oaks. Between the raucous GLORY DAYS, BORN IN THE USA, to the subtle I’M ON FIRE, to more rust belty DOWNBOUND TRAIN, the curation on this album masks the true Bruce aesthetic! Closing with MY HOMETOWN seems almost required.
The Chameleon moniker fits Bowie really well. Really wonderful change of pace to add yet another layer to his persona.
cool punk-garage rock sensibility with a bit of funk, R&B and Blues tossed in for variety.
General enjoyment. I was sanding and painting, so maybe the repetitive nature was soothing. But also, some of the positive opinions are based off of her collab with Thom Yorke on the song THIS MESS WE'RE IN.
Punk rock, pure and simple. Great energy
Feel simple, which maybe it is, but this formula continues to work for Jack and Company (whether that be The Raconteurs, Dead Weather, or his solo stuff). Much like the rest of his catalog, ELEPHANT experiments, but doesn't deviate, but also doesn't settle. This is getting confusing. In conclusion this album f*cking rocks. * End rating
Nostalgia, and I'm not ashamed to score as such. Still holds up, but probably pulling from those fond adolescent memories.
Quality addition to a legendary catalog. Enjoy the garage-ness. Best consumed with a garage beer. Likely a Hamm's or a PBR, but like, in an unironical way.
If someone decides to create a Prog rock instrumental album, they would be so lucky as to match this project. Glad to have listened to this!
Cool grouping of tunes that play like the soundtrack of a pleasant day at a seashore; nay a beach. Much like Pet Sounds, this feels transparently dream-state in nature. Is that too obtuse of an analysis? Probably.
Haven't listened to this in a good while, but I'm glad to get reacclimated. The symmetry within the collaborations on this album, make this arguably one of the most iconic rap compilations.
Very listenable and addictive. Especially CHANGES, ST. VITUS DANCE and SUPERNAUT. Ohh and toss in an epic closer with UNDER THE SUN/EVERY DAY COMES AND GOES.
+1 for influence and concept. General appreciation, but probably something I wouldn't be able to pick out of a hat. Argument to be made about cultural appropriation vs appreciation.
Dug considerably. Like a moth to a strange flame, my ears drift to expiremental punkish tuneage.
Gave this a stronger rating that I initially thought I would. Realized I started saving a considerable amount of tracks. Galactic country rock. Like, if a band mixed up a recipe with Crosby, Stills, Nash and T-Rex.
Do you promise the funk? The whole funk, nothin' but the funk? Has a more important collection of questions, ever been uttered? Me thinks not. One has to wonder what an addition of Hendrix to the collective of Clinton, Bootsy and team, would look like.
That kick off track, CHERRY COLOURED FUNK was rad. Feels like a good introduction to the 90's without ignoring it's 80's roots. Upon research, appears Elizabeth Fraser dated Jeff Buckley for a time... Nothing more than a cool little anecdote.
So, so, so very good! ME AND THOSE DREAMIN' EYES OF MINE, subtle and beautiful. CRUISIN,' LADY, and HIGHER, close out a great album. When describing what Rhythm and Blues should be, this is it. Too young to appreciate this when it was released.
Decently entertaining. Some cool grooves. Got Radiohead vibes. Repetitive but not in a terribly awful way
A funny, yet enjoyable mix of Beach rock and Punk ~ feels like if the E Street Band and the The Velvet Underground merged (probably a strange definition). MODERN DANCE is a super catchy track! Along with that sweet bass intro in LIFE STINKS. Overall, a high quality punk-beach-art amalgam.
Strong production that really pushes her timeless and fearless vocals to match an old school R&B - modern pop hybrid. Man, it would've been a treat to see what music she would continue to generate!
What happens when a combination of sounds blends to meet and make an instantly listenable album.
It'll be tough for me to give anything less than a 4 for a Jack White project.
Quality pop rock
I enjoyed the concept of the album. A bit 'extra' but I guess by definition an Opera is.
While violating a lot of my grading standards (repetitive), I will take a scarlet 'H' for being a Hypocrite. Catchy and signature sound to mark a generational shift, or frankly a F*CK you to the pomp and circumstance of what rock n' roll gatekeepers expected of its genres artists.
From an atmospheric standpoint, I really enjoyed this. Another listen might improve the score, but overall, still, a quality album!
Super rad take on some of the best Metal songs ever created. Felt weird giving a high score to something that is practically a collection of great songs mixed with classically trained musicians, but the curation works super well.
Just start to finish rock beauty.
I gave a quick 2nd listen to a few tracjs which allowed me to enjoy this much more. Got some Alt J vibery to it.
Strong collection of fantastic singing and equal parts funky funk. Awesomeness!
Cool Dance bops. Feels like being in an Icelandic Igloo Speakeasy
Really, really enjoyed this. Strong possibility I change this to a '5 star.' The texture of her voice is so soothing and the instrumental work is freakin' beautiful. Starting with REVELATOR, followed by MY FIRST LOVER helps to define the concept of the album. Each song plays like a lovely lullaby. ELVIS PRESLEY BLUES is about as catchy a track as they come.
This one has an extra cup of smarmy, British tea to it... which I quite enjoy!
Gots that coked out David Bowie voice. Twas jammin' to this!
Quite enjoyable and a super smooth voice. The term psychedelic soul defining this is quite apt. The emotive quality of the vocals equaled with heartfelt and vulnerable lyrics.
Quality work from a legendary band. One of those albums that doesn't hurt their legacy, but by itself, wouldn't alert the world of their nobility.
Much grooves, much enjoyment
Probably why Black Sabbath was as popular across rock genres. Masterful guitar licks and a cacophony of delight, melancholic dread, passionate adrenaline that helped define them as pioneering Metal superstars!
I've heard it described that Cobain wrote stream of conscious nonsense. And while that might be accurate, frankly, I don't give a sh*t. Much like Jim Morrison, some lyrics have hidden meanings, subtext, poetic beauty, but mostly, infectious and catchy. Aside from its generation importance, you can pull something, from every song, in every listen that alerts you to why this album will never extinguish from being excellent.
ZZ Top has its own signature blues rock sound with the tiniest hint of electronica that blends without confusing its identity.
Probably best with a cigarette and pensiveness.
I went in skeptically, but this spoke to me quite a lot. Frenetic nonsense, mixed with absolute rockabilly silliness and pure unserious magnificence. It's pompous without being pompous.
If there was a dance party in Alice in Wonderland, this would be in heavy rotation.
beautiful blend of musical genres. Certainly, inspired and quite impressive and stunning guitar work. Fun note: contributions to Black Panther
oh to be young again drinking Turners Tea and chewin' on candy cigarettes.
Guitars that yell at you, horns that announce their presence, drum swagger heartbeat and a voice that narrates with genuine honest soul and authenticity.
A year ago, I may have given this a lower score, but I think (and considering Ozzy's recent passing) I've really gravitated to the instrumental aspect of metal a lot more. Especially, when the vocals are at least mildly palatable.
Dug it. Definitely a mood listen. Soothing voice to listen to, and once I really leaned into the lyrics, I grasped why it's on the list.
Enjoyed this considerably. Soundtrack of a movement and doing what music should do at its core; express. In this case, to make one either happy, and/or frankly, just dance!
Freakin’ heck this is so groovy and just altogether uber listenable. Kudos to the musicians givin it that jazz-funk-pop-rock fusion.
Moods on mood on moods! Best listening in surround sound. Also, make sure you have a good batch of trees, because if not, you're liable to lose your sh*t!
I so want to like B&S (probably what their fans call them, like, "hey let's listen to some B&S and drink kombucha absinthe cocktails). Maybe if I did that, I might enjoy this more, to be honest.
You know what, I'm gonna be a contrarian, to myself, and give this a decent score. I really enjoyed the music, and I won't submit to my own annoyance at Tommy's singing voice. Funny enough, I would quite enjoy if he did basic spoken word poetry. But incorporating music starts to grind my gears. To be fair, he's probably a fun hang, and has so crazy awesome stories.
Pleasant enough. Kinda of scoring this based on forcing myself to lean into aura. At points can hear some very sweet instrumentals, but at times, my palate recognizes that it's not refined. Basically, I lost track of which song, was which, at points.
MYSTERIOUS WAYS is an illustration of U2 . Ability to write super catchy rock classics but then juxtaposed with songs that bore me profusely. Post 90's music gets bland for me. I will give credit where it is due, because they have written some fantastic music etched in their catalog.
Another quality New Order product. What you spin when you want people to dance awkwardly.
One of those albums that at times feels underrated due to its genre's exceptional product. A dark opera that bleeds, before the scab can seal. Guitar work that is both jarring and equally harmonious with Cornell's vocal echos.
Morrissey has some fire tracks, whether with The Smiths or his solo stuff. This doesn't have that many, however. If I could really sit and ponder this a bit more, I might grant it a higher score, but thus is the curse of the of the album list extensiveness.
magical voice and 'Honey' will always be a classic! Quality features that remind one of yesteryear
beautiful blend of subtle + acid rock + high quality songwriting. While Young and Stills, especially, have their examples of masterpieces, this slightly misses the mark. Not for lack of talent, but most likely due to lack of musical maturity. And tbh, this is probably a nonsense evaluation LOL.
Sounds like drugs.
The deep cuts on this deserve their recognition. I think the ubiquity of the singles on alt rock/grunge radio made me forgot how tasty the other tracks are.
In this weird timeline we exist, will we get a collaboration of Marilyn Manson, Russel Brand, R. Kelly? Separating the art from Spirit Halloween cosplay... Quality electro goth industrial metal (respectfully coined 'scary metal'... by me). My 2 cents, give me Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Deftones. * And upon some quick research, Trent Reznor contributed to the production of this, which makes perfect sense, because the atmosphere can be mesmerizing at times, but the album can get a bit tedious at points.
While some may complain that Beck is rehashing old routines, I for one enjoy him revisiting this space. Pure Beatnik psych-hop?
Strong enjoy! Upbeat surf rock-punk-dance... I'm probably missing some descriptors, but this kicked some major buttocks!
I think I wanted to enjoy this more than I actually did. May try and listen to another few tracks to see if I missed something. Generally enjoy the Siouxsie stuff I know. Overall, still dig the vibes, especially approaching the best holiday that exists; HALLOWEEN!!
Dug this a lot. Some heavy, mixed with some bad-ass dance metal, which is a weird juxtaposition I presume.
Not sure how I've never listened to an entire album of theirs, but I'm sure glad I finally have. This is pure vocal and guitar arena rock !
Might come back to revise score, because there are a few tracks I've listened to again, POUGHKEEPSIE, THIS BEARD IS FOR SIOBHAN and INSECT EYES that left a positive imprint in my brain. There's something there, there, but can't describe, aside from recognizing the idiosyncratic vocals and lyrics.
Playing catch-up, and what a fantastic album to get back on track... Again, I'm a sucker for harmonization and this is a beautiful example of using vocal blends as an instrument. HOW LONG and YIBO LABO really stick out for me.
Smutty, sweaty, pure adrenaline ROCK N' ROLL. Think part ACDC, part Queen, mixed with the histrionics. Of course there's I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE, but LOVE IS ONLY A FEELING, and GROWING ON ME kicked some major tailfeather. Score probably elevated due to Justin Hawkins' Youtube music review/tutorials, which give added credibility to their music. Gonna listen to some Alien Ant Farm and the Struts now, for no reason at all.
Lots of bops, as the kids would say. Must've been a blank in my memory, because upon research, I didn't realize Beyonce previously had other members in the group.
Super cool, silly Rockabilly energy. A lot of genre bending tracks that fit in that punk aesthetic, but don't restrain themselves from adding some instrumental flare. Lots of track playlist saves. Imagining a live show would be intensely fun
The grooves made me groove. Rockabilly-Punk aesthetic with a pop undertone. Toss in a little Country-Rock and some silly, yet intriguing lyrics. The juxtaposition is what makes the Kinks so compelling. I put 'the Kinks' up there with 'the Band' as underrated musical units; cursed by being very well recognized and appreciated, and yet still not receiving the full credit they should. That probably doesn't make any sense. Whatever!
This one was funny to me, because I felt their self titled album was stuck on idle. And while this didn't necessarily stray from their sound, or identity, it seemed like it was curated so much better. The flow, the feel, the variety was super catchy. SAY SOMETHING LOVING, LIPS, REPLICA all had enjoyable hooks. ON HOLD especially was particular catchy!
Lean into the groove and let it fly you to Saturn. A masterclass of songwriting. What Joe Camel listens to when he fancies a night out.
Really high quality British Jazz. An example of their genius can be explained by listening to JIGSAW FALLING INTO PLACE.
heck yeah!! At times subtle, but in a good way. Moody, but in a good way. Certain tracks reminded me a lot of Elbow. FIRESUITE into HERE IT COMES kicked off the album quite beautifully.
I was expecting tawdry work from an assembly of rapscallions. I was shocked with how much I fancied this. While there is copious amounts of tomfoolery, this is quite a celebration of glam rock fun
enjoyable concept-ish album mixing some old schooly hippieness, with some modern electronica + folk aesthetics. (Yes, I realize this makes no sense, except for in my head).
Competes with Morning View (Incubus) as my favorite album. PRIVILEGE starts with this subtle to abruptly loud guitar, with Brandon Boyd examining, "Isn't it strange that a gift could be an enemy? Isn't it weird, that a privilege could feel like a chore?" At times Incubus lyrics can be captivating, at other times, incoherent. Frankly, I don't give a sh*t. They will most likely always be my favorite band. With this album, you get pop rock excellence with DRIVE, the visceral PARDON ME, alt-rock classic, STELLAR, and a collection of genre bending songs that have a sense of authenticity, while also documenting their influences. If you get an opportunity, do yourself a favor and watch them live. At best, you get to see a band that ensures to give a 11 out of 10 performance, and at worst you get to tailgate with some strange, yet entertaining creatures. Most likely, you'll get a combination of the 2.
Obviously we know the celebrity that is Elvis, but want to give some flowers to the musicians behind Mr. Presley. They sure did produce some fun ditties.
Knowing some of the Velvet Undergrounds tunes, I was not expecting something distinct, but... and I might be wrong, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this. And that is not a slight to the Velvet Underground. This felt at times like a wonderfully weird smorgasbord of UK contemporary roc-folk-psychedelia. Think part Beatles, part Kinks, which at times I guess they were competing for the same sounds. Anyways, I'll complete this review by saying I enjoyed this a good deal. And community note: I listened as the original 9 track album.
It's what I want Tom Waits/Leonard Cohen to sound like. You know, like if they actually gave half a sh*t about the vocal part. I digress, glad to finally have met this interesting soul. Gots some Devotchka feels in there too, which I liked.
Major kick buttage. Enjoyed considerably. Can hear some of that Stones~ish flavor from Ronnie Wood. And that distinct Rod Stewart raspy sweetness.
I hear something different every time I listen to this album. Bonham's drumming patterns, Jones's bass fills, obvi Page and Plant, duh! Assuming there will be more Zep on this list and, most likely will continue tossin' out Fivers.
Some fun ska. Not sure how they alluded me this long.
This feels like a subtext to all the Bowie/Byrne that I enjoy. The peculiar sounds disguised in music. The B side gives the happy delirious 'Lucy in the Sky ~ Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' feel.
Made clearing out Monday emails more enjoyable. Head bobs galore. Would've enjoyed some banger collabs some modern musicians.
Certainly can't say this man didn't emote. Voice of a drunk barfly that surprises the crowd with angelic vocals. Wish there were more upbeats like THE WEATHERMAN and OUR PRIVATE LIFE. I'm at a 2.5 stars, but those tracks pushed it to a 3 for recording purposes.
I appreciate the concept, but unfortunately with this list, I need to pick and choose which albums to relisten. Still enjoyed once I leaned into the abstract. May revisit to change score. Assuming Ziggy, Let's Dance and Hunky will make an appearance at some point (not researching for the surprise factor(.
Sweet record from an absolutely fantastic time in rock music history. To be included in this era was both a blessing and a curse. So many other bands that didn't get their just due, but made great pieces of art. Kicking off with FREAK SCENE and other gut punchingly catchy tracks is an example of what makes J Mascis and Dinosaur Jr. so special to alt rock's wonderful family.
Can I call this Punk? Well, I will anyways. Obviously a bit dated, but you can certainly hear the recipe for what would turn in some classic Brit-Rock (think Stones. Beatles, Kinks). I'M LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO LOVE has a super catchy guitar solo/fill (not quite sure what to call it), but it was super neat and totally boss.
Felt like I was smoking a cigar at a beach lounge whilst feeling the salt water breeze tickle my skin.
It's the sound for me. I understand if people complain about the repetitiveness, but I for one enjoy it quite a lot. I feel like a 3.5 is more accurate, but sliding it up to a 4 based on the unceasing toe-taping. TEENAGE RIOT, THE SPRAWL, RAIN KING are class!!
As a fan of quirky/unique voices (see: Geddy Lee and Claudio Sanchez), I've always found an appeal to Billy Bragg's voice. I'm also aware enough to sympathize with those that don't haha. I only heard a handful of his music, but I can appreciate this effort. I was hopeful of a bit of tone change, but at times it plateaus too long. There's certainly a meld of different genres, but doesn't necessarily from 'protest-folk.'
The most aptly named album in history. This Eno guy sure has layers to him.
Pleasantly surprised. Definitely found some humor in the vocals, but I'm not going to beat up the rating for that reason. I kind of found myself vibing to it. And to be honest, if I can enjoy Prince's voice, I can use that rationale to appreciate Green Gartside (a name I had 0 familiarity with until today). Some subtle, but tasty guitar licks hidden in here too. Probs would be like a 2.7 ~ rounding up.
As stereotypically Icelandic as can be (see: SICK FOR TOYS). I think the oddness kept my interest, especially the nu-wave mixed with the impending grunge sound. Tracks fitting that description; F***ING IN RHYTHM & SORROW and COWBOY. Outside of that, maybe a bit of brevity would've propelled this score higher.
Bowie at times can feel complex, but this is one of those albums that helps define him, in my opinion. Layered, unique, confusing, but ultimately very entertaining! If one were to be introduced to Bowie, LIFE ON MARS? would be an apt selection. While side 1 obviously is much more acclaimed, for obvious reasons, I've grown to really appreciate how impressive side 2 is, especially THE BEWLAY BROTHERS
Obviously, the experimental quality of Side B is epic, like a psychedelic space opera. But also, Side A is freakin sweet. I noted, 'this has some super fun Doors vibes' and sure enough, I found a fantastic concert poster with Iron Butterfly supporting The Doors... Long winded way of saying I quite enjoyed the Acid-Psych-prog rock aesthetic.
An album idea that is oft attempted yet seldom done well. This is an exception to that. Well-crafted storyline that allows Kendrick to showcase his lyrical proficiency.
Great soundtrack for if I was in a first player RPG. Unable to distinguish XTAL from AGEISPOLIS from SCHOTTKEY 7TH PATH, but tis not a foible of Aphex Twin. The sounds were smooth and rad,... just one long, continuous sound of radness.
Out of the gates with a freaking Classic!! Stephen Stills might be arguably the most underrated Rock musician.
Felt like I might enjoy this more. I guess I didn't hate, but it became confusing at times... and coming from a confusing individual as myself, denotes something, I guess. Did dig the futuristica beat scheme though. Anyways, I liked the El-P track, BLADERUNNERS and TO THE MOON'S CONTRACTOR.
Was expecting copious amounts of primal screams. There were 0 primal screams. Maybe a handful of muffled screams; possibly some sensible screams. Lack of vociferous screams, notwithstanding, I kinda found the style hip. Most likely due to formative years fitting within this time period.
Tone set with self-titled track to kick things off. Feel that dirt road, guitar in old case on top of torn truck passenger seat fabric, feel
a lot more fun than I was expecting. I could imagine myself driving my imaginary Chrysler LeBaron in South Beach groovin' to this.
Nu Wave operatic pub, Beach Springsteen Boys. This is why you wait until an album ends to score. 2nd half wore me out.
Jack Skellington and David Bowie meet to perform a party for Andy Warhol. Lou Reed nods vociferously. Immediate impression was, "boy, does that ever sound like The Flaming Lips..." ~ I was correct in my assessment (Jonathan Donahue being a former member). Not sure if one influenced the other, but the connection is obvious. Another enjoyable new find brought about from Album generator.
Pure Soul-Hip Hop-R&B perfection. So much authenticity to this album and beauty, and heartbreak and other appropriate adjectives. ~ I wish I could find my CD, but I settled on Spotify, which feels like a disservice. DOO WOP obviously, superb and TO ZION, purely exceptional
I missed the true era of Pixies mystery and appeal. Super catch hipster-nerd grunge. I would hear the occasional Pixies tune on alt-rock radio (think WHERE IS MY MIND 'first rule about Fight Club', DEBASER, MONKEY GONE TO HEAVEN) but wasn't quite yet an angsty mood-driven teen yet. For some reason, this album helped me attach to what the generation felt with this album. No surprise Radiohead and Nirvana were influenced by them. Key tracks: VELOURIA, IS SHE WEIRD, STORMY WEATHER, DOWN TO THE WELL.
Tolerable introduction to the bands career. Much more prefer the later stuff like THE KILLING MOON and LIPS LIKE SUGAR.
It's the psychedelia, mixed with wonderful songwriting, sprinkled with harmonies and perfected with well-meaning weirdness, for me!
Super cool George Thorogood style Bar Blues rock-mixed with catchy Glam rock hooks! Understandable that the American powerhouses that melded the Arena rock and Heavy-glam, were impacted by this band.
Was looking for descriptions of Dirty Projectors, and fell on electro-Art Pop as my best combo. Enjoyed. STILLNESS IS THE MOVE and USEFUL CHAMBER were pretty frickin' sweet.
Some high quality French electro-rock/house, (sh*t I don't know what to call it), but regardless, this was sweet! Already a fan of Daft Punk, so I might have to dive into the French electro rock scene more.
LOVE VIGILANTES kicks off this album quite nicely. Plus, we got frog sounds in THE PERFECT KISS. Quality addition of frog sounds!
No surprise this was quite popular concurrently while Dane Cook's star was brightest. Read into that however you'd like... Still like both and I'm not sure if I should be ashamed and/or brave in my exclamation. One of my favorite album openers: CLOSER. Jumping into CRAWL
While generally appreciated, could've done with more BLOODY WELL RIGHT and DREAMER styled songs to break apart from the Atlantic City background music. Style of music a Divorced Boomer listens to while drinking Chivas and soda.
If I ever open a barber/cigar shop, this is most likely the 1st record being spun.
Can't say I've heard many of these, but I was really digging the vibes. Will listen to a lot of these tracks again, especially A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A TREE.
fun little intro to the Brit-Ska scene.
Drug cocktail. If Hunter S. Thompson was a music. How does a person even score this LOL?!
I've evolved to 'I think I understand Steely Dan now' status!
Twas expecting to be annoying and not like. On the contrary, I did like. Definitely Bowie influence involved.
If you don't wanna knit me a sweater, then you ain't worth my time
Heck yeah, another album I am SUPER angry at not experiencing until now. Takes the best parts of metal and grunge and meshes with an insanely great rock n' roll voice!
The more I listen the more I kinda dig it. Kind of a Iggy Pop doing nu wave goth industrial metal haha. Kind of Nine Inch Nailsey at times.
Metallica doing what most metal bands are unable to do, find depth and beauty within the darkness.
one of those albums that can sound different based on mood. Era defining album.
Was going to demerit (can that be a verb?) this based on the 1001 ubiquity of Brit post punk new wave on this list. And that's not necessarily to say I dislike the genre. It's felt like some have snuck on here that I question their deservability (another made up word). But based solely on THIS IS THE DAY, I was able to lean into the grooves. SOUL MINING and UNCERTAIN SMILE also caught my ear.
Gonna listen to a lot of these tracks much more. MALIBU and CELEBRITY SKIN are properly fantastic and more well know, but glad to listen to the remainder of the album. PLAYING YOUR SONG was delightfully cool.
Generally dug this. But things are starting to get kind of repetitive with the string of albums. I guess I can’t necessarily blame the artists. Got some Bowie and Talking Heads vibes from it. Sort of islandy Alt-Rock.
Gothy beauty. ONE HUNDRED YEARS and THE FIGUREHEAD really leans into their strengths. Songs can bleed into one another.
Trippy... in a good way. Perfectly weird and enjoyable Have a feeling Andrew Bird and Devotchka pulled some influence from this.
Score elevated due to PRETTY IN PINK and ALL OF THIS AND NOTHING. Subtle Bowie-ness for what it’s worth.
Grooves upon grooves. Masterful and legendary songwriters.
F*ckin A this is catchy and has hooks to the max.
MOUNTAIN SONG always will kick butt. JANE SAYS for its annoying ubiquitousness, will still force me to yell, ‘Jane says, “Have you seen my wig around?”… still love said track however. PIGS IN ZEN super catchy grooves!
Can grooved, so Radiohead and Portishead could funk
Paul and Art leaning into their strengths; harmonies, lyrical skill, and subtle, yet beautiful guitar melodies.
Feels like this was a common style in the 90's; rap-blues-jazz rock, with some doing it better than others. This was an example of one of the good ones. Fun Lovin' tracks: CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, PASSIVE/AGRESSIVE. and the perpetually catchy SCOOBY SNACKS
Enjoyable walking music for a January Pittsburgh summer (58 degrees and rainy). Can understand why the repetitiveness could become taxing, but I sunk into the silky ambience (pretty sure that doesn't mean anything, but to me it sounds good).
A stunningly beautiful voice that matches with introspective and geographic lyrics. Not surprised to see a litany of country-folk-bluegrass legends involved with this project.
Enjoyable interpretation of some blues standards. Quality stuff.
Annoyed that I hadn't given this the full listen it deserved. Heard a few of the tracks that hit the airwaves (HURT and PERSONAL JESUS) but should've sought out the album. Subtlety juxtaposed with choice panache. Feels like the perfect collection of songs to repurpose for him, especially at that moment of his life.
Funny enough, the lyrics 'It's better to burn out than to fade away' kind of match the tone of this album. A combination of legendary songs + performances, mixed with strong subtlety. With that said, practically every track, regardless of monotony, has some high quality wordsmithin'. Hate even saying that because I put Neil in the songwriting legend category.
I'm a sucker for the folk-bluegrass Laurel Canyon vibes that toss in a bit of the surf rock flowery guitar.
Cheeky and funny... to an extent. Kind of like when ole Rick Gervais makes fun of Hollywood people, for being Hollywood people. With that said, I guess at the time, it was probably cutting edge material. I think I kept wanting more out of this, but the joke kinda of ran long. He supposedly played a lot with mustard gas as a child.
Is Bowie on here too much? Probably. Is this one of the better ones? Yes!! GOLDEN YEARS up there as one of my Bowie favs. Another strong, hip groove: TVC15 (just hooks you in, 'Transition, transmission...'
Fun album with some cool psychedelia infused. Was that intentional, or is that even accurate? Not sure, but regardless, the Beatles doing what they be doing. Churning out ultra catchy ditties.
Yacht rock funk. A voice that sounds ragged, but in an enticingly wonderful kind of way. The closer SMALL HOURS is enchanting. May change score higher, because I feel like this will receive another listen.
Morose Bjork? Sadder Arcade Fire-the Suburbs? Violates some of my self-imposed metrics, because I genuinely enjoyed this. Like, using stream of conscious lyrics to convey wit, while not actually doing so, but kind of doing. Confused? So was I. Might not revisit immediately, but some intriguing aspects will most likely bring me back, see: WRITTEN ON THE FOREHEAD
Compelling theatrical voice. Had me at the self titled AMERICAN GOTHIC, lost steam with some of the slower numbers.
A second listen helped me appreciate a bit more as I leaned into the grooves, especially the keyboard usage.
Reluctantly approached this album based entirely on length... that was a mistake. This is what I envision punk is supposed to be. Frenzied, exciting, tireless energy with some insanely catch grooves. And yes, probably explains why Jacka$$ was a fan (see: CORONA).
And the meek shall inherit the earth!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hyper and catchy.
One of my favorite opening tracks in all of the Rock n' roll... STOP! Perry showing off his visceral vocals and some kick a$$ bass-drums and wonderfully infused guitar licks.
How a house band in a magical lakeside bar, with long haired Billy goats grazing in the fields, and the purest of dandy wines, or Miller High Life, would sound. LOOK OUT CLEVELAND and KING HARVEST are underrated gems imho.
This a fantastic example of instrumentals narrating a story... Is the story ever-changing? Yes, but that adds to the appeal. The mind most likely will hear something different with each listen.
I felt like I needed a smoking jacket and a proper drink. Could rock to this for many of on occasion. Loved the IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA rendition.
A grunge punch to the grunge hole.
DANCING CHOOSE is such a cool song. The little guitar fills mesh with the horns so groovily. STORK & OWL and RED DRESS, especially were a class in merrymaking music. Really leaned into their composition style and enjoyed muchly.
Dug the guitar groovyness. Felt subtle, but intriguing. Reed's prose has always been engaging, but can grow tiresome at times (the lyrics are compelling). Enjoyed the weirdness of variety of MURDER MYSTERY.
Groovy
Fun weaving of alt-grunge-pop-punk. I was trying to decipher the genre that shone through most, but ultimately, decided not to pigeonhole and just enjoy!
Man, this definitely is a way to tell a story. Respect to illuminating something so depressing.
Feels like listening in a dusty saloon, or a sweaty New Orleanians bar. Vivid and rousing and electrifying!
The rap style was cool, but kinda beatin' a dead horse with the raunch.
dug it. Punk with some dexterity and style,
Hair like an angel, voice of a legend.
Pure fun tied with a bow. Infectious energy and musical cohesion.
While I enjoy the times I've listened to Megadeth, I was wonderfully surprised with how enthralled I was with this. Instrumentals that were well written and simply fantastic to the ear. And high vocal quality packed with an extreme dosage of adrenaline.
Dance beach rock for prom of Ghouls, zombies, rapscallions, and rascals... a Monster Mash, perhaps
Incredibly pleasant voice. CONSTANT CRAVING is super grooves approved-track. Feels like this hits hard on a tropical vacation, or as the background music to my romantic Cowboy film, 'Love is in the Air, Love is at the Ranch.'
Like a prehistoric punk band. Dug it.
Feels like an influence to the 90's Gin Blossoms/Goo Goo Dolls era. Did enjoy.
May come back and revise to a 4, based on a few super cool tracks, but the album could get a bit tiresome at times.
Punchy punk and legendary influencer. Like most of the early genre trailblazers, can get repetitive, but certainly not due to lack of energy or charisma.
I feel like I'm walking through the streets of N'oleans, slow as molasses as the humid air violates the senses. RIP Dr. John.
For awhile, teetered between Lana cosplaying as moody-artist or authentic. Still don’t know, but I also don’t cared. I enjoyed this quite a lot! Does the sound deviate much? Probably not. But she has a way of captivating the listener. Does everyone feel that way? Probably not. End of quizzical analyzation.
As expected, harmonies be on point, yo! Some quality guitar work and some awesome dropout sentiments.
I blame weed induced music doc binge sessions for bumping this score to a 4 level. Part of a prodigious music team. Also, warm spring air enlisted this as its background companion.
Sooooooo many great tracks. A sound that is instantly recongnizable as 'that's ole Petey making gold again!'
Comes out the gates with some sauce; PLEASE FORGIVE ME and BABYLON. Rest of the album loses some steam, but with lyrical intrigue; WHITE LADDER comes to mind.
Probably still have the bootleg I bought at lunch for $5 + basketball tutoring during gym class. Coincidentally saw a pierogi named 'Stan' walking the streets of the Strip District (Pittsburgh) whilst listening to this album. Not for nothing, I guess.
RHAPSODIA DEL MARAVILLOSO was a groovy number, as was the rest of the album. Plays like a soundtrack to a movie, that while entertaining, not easy to discern from one song to the next.
JACKSONVILLE and CHICAGO (think catchy fun Devotchka/Arcade Fire/Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros) were incredibly entertaining. The whole album hits on what Emo intellectuals try for, but usually come off as inauthentic. The quirkiness mixed with classic pop rock aesthetic with a tinge of grunge and a sprinkle of experimental garage rock (think Sonic Youth).
Before this albums list, I was unaware the French were so prolific in the electronica. This one is a real toe tapper, I tell ya. Good job, France! Keep this up, and I'll decline calling your tasty bread, 'Freedom Toast.'
Pleasant mix of jazz and pop. Kinda like some Phantom of the Opera type sh*t. Most of the songs felt ballady in that jazzy way, save for FREEDOM! '90 and HEAL THE PAIN... oh and what felt initially felt like Bandana Brett doing, EvErY rOsE hAs It'S tHoRn
These wankers have some ears for this music thang.
