I liked The Ox and My Generation. Other than that not much special. Never really been into The Who
3.5 / 5 rounded up
I had to get used to the vocal delivery on this album but started to enjoy it more throughout. Might appreciate it more on consecutive listens.
This is just too long. Definitely preferred The Love Below over Speakerboxxx. Favourites: The Rooster, Church, Reset // Love Hater, Spread, Prototype, Hey Ya!, Roses
3.5 / 5 rounded up
This was my first introduction to The Smiths and also my first time revisiting since. It has really grown on me and I don’t hate it as much anymore as those years ago, but still my least favourite The Smiths album.
The 5 track run from What She Said to Barbarism Begins at home was awesome, just a shame that it had to be followed by the title track.
Not a big fan of Oasis. Nothing wrong with this but all songs kinda sound the same
Bangers all round and such a great variety in styles. Does not feel long at all.
Favourite tracks: London Calling, Spanish Bombs, The Guns of Brixton, The Card Cheat, Train in Vain
I was in doubt whether to give this album a 4/5 or a 5/5, since there is obviously some weaker tracks on here. The sheer musicality and the memories this brings back, however, push it towards a 5/5 for me.
The album title says enough.
I just can’t stand Michael Jackson and his hoo-ha’s for more than two song on end, so no surprise the rating here.
I hate Speed Demon and Liberian Girl and the ever-present 80s drum groove throughout the album drives me insane. I also never realised how awful Man In The Mirror actually is and the two songs that follow make up the worst three song run I have ever heard.
The fact that I quite liked the first two songs cannot save this album, probably because after those the amount of Michael Jackson I can handle was exceeded.
hee hee 1/5
I had never heard of Isaac Hayes, so I was not sure what to expect. But to my surprise, I had heard Walk On By, but as a sample on Hooverphonic’s “2 Wicky”.
I really liked the first two songs. REALLY liked them. That’s why I think it’s a pity that One Woman didn’t carry the same energy for me: it felt much more generic and dull. Not a bad song, but my least favourite of this album.
Although the spoken intro to By The Time I Get To Phoenix is quite long, I don’t really mind it and it’s a nice intro to the song. The song itself is beautiful.
The musical arrangements on this album are awesome, just like his voice, which is very soothing and perfect for this music. Definitely one worth revisiting.
I didn’t really mind this album and thought Don’t Tell Me was actually pretty good. There were no songs I absolutely hated but Paradise (Not For Me) went on for too long, however. I was about to give it a 3/5 but then the cover of American Pie came.
It is hard to deny the influence this record and Little Richard in general has had. However, there is only so much variation you can have within a twelve bar blues structure and eventually the album got quite boring.
THE SOUNDS OF FREEDOM RAAAGH 🦅🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅
This is the most American shit I’ve ever heard. Nonetheless pretty good.
Favourite tracks: I’m On Fire, Bobby Jean, Dancing In the Dark
I had never heard of this album but it’s great! The dance/house elements combined with the 60s influences make for a very interesting and enjoyable trip-hoppy album. Only Love Can Break Your Heart is a great cover, Girl VII is super catchy and I liked the bass in People Get Real. The instrumentals Stoned to Say the Least and Like the Swallow stayed interesting all the way through, but Nothing Can Stop Us is probably my favourite song on here.
I don’t know if this was a good first “real” introduction to Leonard Cohen (I know Hallelujah, of course).
I am sure that I don’t understand all the intricacies of the lyrics on this album, going off of what I’ve heard about Cohen. So lyrically, there is probably a lot of interesting things going on.
Musically, this was nothing like I expected this to sound. I liked the three track run Everybody Knows, I’m Your Man, and Take This Waltz most of this wasn’t really for my taste.
This is definitely weird, but in all the right ways. Sounds to me like a mix of The Pixies and Nirvana. The instrumental 5-4=Unity was interesting (is it a "cover" of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five"?). This album gives me the urge to gather some friends and jam out and maybe start a band.
Favourite Tracks: Stop Breathin, Cut Your Hair, Range Life, Fillmore Jive
4/5
I heard of many people praising this album and have listened to it before, and although I like it, it is not a 5/5 album for me. There is certainly nothing wrong with it; musically it is up my alley (Although Neignorhood #4 (7 Kettles) eventually got pretty boring) and it has some awesome lyrics, but it did not sound all that special to me - there is just something missing for me that keeps it from a perfect score.
Favourite tracks: Neighborhood #3 (Power Out), Wake Up, In the Backseat
Enjoyed this much more than I had expected. I went in expecting a boring pop album but this was way more prog rock and gospelly than I initially anticipated. Pretty good listen.
Apparently I kind of like country? I didn’t mind this at all, but it’s probably not something I’ll return to. Some songs are a bit forgettable.
This album starts off incredibly strong with River Song. Thoughts of You and Time are two awesome songs. At times, however, the songs become a bit repetitive. His voice here is quite raspy and raw, very different than what I have heard on the Beach Boys' records. This is something I would return to on a warm summer evening, maybe with a beer and some friends, to put on as background music. If I had listened to it on such a day, it might have gotten a perfect score.
Of the “bonus” tracks (which make up the majority of the album), I liked the first 4 the most. Wild Situation was a fun listen as well and Are You Real almost sounded like prog at times.
I liked this album less than I thought. Of course there were interesting and good moments. However there were too many moments that were too dragged out or boring, and on some songs I did not really enjoy the vocals (Cuckoo Cocoon, The Grand Parade of Lifeless Packaging).
The biggest downside for me is that this album is goes on for too long. I was quite tired at the end of listening to it.
Favourite tracks: In the Cage, Hairless Heart, The Carpet Crawlers, The Lamia, The Light Dies Down on Broadway
Super funky, super catchy all the way through. Loved the vocals on this.
Awesome album, with bangers all the way through. Knopfler’s guitars are never too over the top present but also never boring.
Sounds very much of the time. I liked the harmonies on this album, but not much more stood out to me. Maybe because the songs are quite short, they feel a bit forgettable.
Favourite songs: 8:05, Changes, Indifference, Rounder
And why did I hear “The Wheels of the Bus” at the end of Lazy Me, haha
I know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but seeing this album doesn’t exactly make me think I will be listening to a masterpiece. Also reading that Pharrell Williams is in this group doesn’t really give me high expectations.
At times, the album certainly exceeded those expectations. Some songs are incredibly catchy and there are some nice jazzy moments in it.
There were also songs, however, that I just couldn’t bring myself to like (Fly or Die, She Wants To Move). The features by Lenny Kravitz didn’t do much for me either.
Favourite songs: Don’t Worry About It, Breakout, Wonderful Place, Maybe
From what I’ve heard from Steely Dan, I like “Can’t Buy A Thrill” more. Still, nothing wrong with this: very chill and laid back, jazzy feel.
3/5 rounded up.
Favourite tracks: Ricky Don’t Lose That Number, Any Major Dude Will Tell You, Pretzel Logic, Monkey In Your Soul
This album is just way too long. It’s not bad, but even a beautiful voice gets tiresome after 3 hours and I had to really force myself to listen to all of it
This has everything that I love about soul: incredibly funky, extensive musical arrangements, and Mayfield’s voice is awesome as well. I really appreciate the lyrical content as well.
And man I wish Junky Chase went on longer, such a good instrumental.
Nothing I absolutely hated (anpart from Orange Rolls, Angel’s Spit), nothing I particularly loved (okay, maybe the outros to Theresa’s Sound World). A lot of these songs sound longer than they actually are.
Favourite songs: Theresa’s Sound World, Sugar Kane, Chapel Hill
I feel about this album much the same as the previous I listened to: there is nothing that I hate, but there is also nothing that particularly stands out to me. I definitely liked the more slow, stripped down songs the back.
A nice listen, but probably not something I’ll return to soon.
Favourite tracks: I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, In The Cold Cold Night
I feel very conflicted about this album. Musically, I liked a lot of this. The vocals, however, just sound wrong at times; it’s like he does not want to be there.
I feel like this would be like a 3,5/5 but I’ll round down because 4 stars is too much for this.
Cool beats and I liked the politcal activist lyrics (although I am sure I missed most of it). The only downside for me is that I did not always like the hypeman vocals.
Favourite tracks: Night Of The Living Baseheads, Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos, Rebel Without A Pause
Actually enjoyed this way more than I anticipated. I had to get used to her vocals at first, but other than that, this is just a really enjoyable synth-poppy new wave album.
Favourite tracks: Time After Time, Witness
I read that this was the favourite American singer of The Beatles, and their influence on Nilsson is certainly apparent. Many of the songs sound very Beatlesque, while the harmonies remind me a lot of The Beach Boys.
I love the opener and I liked the harmonies on The Moonbeam Song, but besides that, the album did not do much for me. His most famous song, Without You, is probably my least favourite from this after Coconut.
Half of this is okay to great, the other half is bad. But the bad parts are worse than the good parts are good.
2/5
This is the first “world music” (maybe not really world music - still, the first non-English) album that this generator gives me. Whether they are good or not, I love the inclusion of these albums on this site, because otherwise I probably would have never found them and listened to them. Something about broadening musical horizons.
With my limited knowledge of Spanish I tried to deconstruct and understand some of the lyrics, but the truth is that they are not necessary to enjoy this album. The music is super funky and immediately catchy: it feels as though you are in the middle of a carnival parade in Rio de Janeiro.
Listening to this on one of the first truly warm and sunny days here makes this even more enjoyable. All in all, very pleasantly surprised!
A bit forgettable and boring, but it had some cool moments. Didn’t love the vocals.
I know this is a legendary album but honestly, I don’t see myself returning to it anytime soon. The title track is a banger though (of course).
Is saw someone here say that this is what the northern lights would sound like if they made music and I could not agree more. The rich soundscapes take you to another place, and because of the Icelandic vocals it almost sounds alien-like (because I don’t understand Icelandic).
I felt like the album grew on me while listening to it (usually the opposite happens) and I enjoyed the latter half more than the first half, with Olsen Olsen being the best of the album for me.
Just a bit long and probably not fitting to listen to on every occasion. I feel like this is more for cold winter nights in your bed than for warm and sunny summer afternoons.
I know that the former Beatles never reached the same musical heights individually as they did as a band. But I did not expect it to be this bad. I like the song Imagine from time to time but the rest was truly a bore at best.
I absolutely hate It’s So Hard. I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier Mama goes on way too long. And why do all the vocals have these weird effects?
Disappointed, to say the least.
Musically I did not really hate this. The vocals are the thing I have the biggest problems with. The monotonous, bored delivery becomes annoying very fast. I could stand it for a little while but a few songs in, listening to the voice became really frustrating.
This is just annoying, repetitive, boring and did not have to be that long.
Favourite song: Shiver (probably the only melodic vocal moment on the album)
This shit slaps. Only knew Walk On The Wild Side and Perfect Day, but the others are great as well.
Super soulful pop album that sounds both very retro and modern. Love her voice and many many great tracks throughout.
Favourite songs: Rehab, Back To Black, Love Is A Losing Game, He Can Only Hold Her
"I have often asked myself the reason for the sadness
In a world where tears are just a lullaby
If there's any answer, maybe love can end the madness
Maybe not, oh, but we can only try"
Just one of the many lyrics I like from this record. Love her voice and the chill instrumentation on this (especially the piano). This brings up images of a slightly warm and sunny autumn morning, where the city is busy for the first time again as people want to catch some of those sweet rays of sunshine.
I feel like this is the perfect way to do folk music, Very beautiful and definitely one worth revisiting.
Very boring 60s pop rock. Nothing interesting (except for Zilch) and gets annoying very fast.
Also, I hate the cover.
I guess this was fine. Just a lot of synths. A LOT. And a bit too much for my liking. And after a few songs, that drum sound gets annoying as well. "I Am The Law" is definitely my least favourite track on here.
One thing I liked about this album is that it has a bit of a darker sound than the synth-pop albums I am used to and it still remains dancy. So that was interesting to hear.
The first and the last track are my favourites; all the stuff between them is not really my taste.
This certainly is an album that doesn’t get boring. Even the long ass instrumentals stayed interesting to listen to.
But interesting is as far as I’ll go. There were some parts that just didn’t click with me and a lot was too chaotic, and I don’t think I’ll relisten to this again (I won’t put this on for fun, at least).
However, this sounds way ahead of its time. So props to that I guess.
3/5
Okay, I liked this a lot more than Bad. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough is a great opener and incredibly funky, and overall this album was musically much better than Bad.
But I don't know what it is - after a while Michael Jackson just does not click with me anymore (it's probably his annoying hee-hees and oh-ahs) and the whole album gets a lot less enjoyable.
Overall: the first half was pretty good, but the second half was quite a drag.
Favourite song: Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
Enjoyed this, but it did not stand out to me as anything special. It felt a bit all over the place at times.
Favourite tracks: On Sir Francis Drake, Beautiful, Quicksand
Very chill instrumentally and I like the range and fusion of styles on here. It sounded very grand yet at the same time very intimate. I did not know Gene Clark before, but the story I read about this album and his life after was very sad.
"Now I see that in my visions
That my eyes are seeing twice
Once for every expectation
And once for what I realize"
- Some Misunderstanding
I’m not really into jazz, but this is pretty great.
I don’t know what I think about ABBA. Sometimes I really enjoy their music, sometimes I can’t stand it. I had the same with this album: I liked the hits of it, but the rest didn’t do anything special for me really.
“Why Did It Have To Be Me” surprised me though: I did not expect to hear such a bluesy song on an ABBA album.
I liked this quite a lot, especially musically. And while it is undeniable that she has an awesome voice, it unfortunately did not always click with me and the raspiness was a bit overwhelming at times. Still, there were more than enough great moments to make this a 4/5.
Favourite songs: Me and Bobby McGee, Get It While You Can
This is absolutely awesome. It’s so over the top, but in all the best ways possible. The album stays interesting all the way through and has such an amazing energy that drives the whole project.
Favourite tracks: Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, I’ve Seen That Movie Too, Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)
This was okay, but probably not something I will return to anytime soon. The weird synth sounds didn't do much for me, and the singer's voice also wasn't really my taste. My favourite song of this album was therefore the instrumental YYZ, although I enjoyed The Camera Eye as well.
I was planning on listening to Rush for some time now, as several people had recommended them to me. I don't know if it is something I will enjoy, but I might listen to them some more. So this was a nice introduction, I guess.
This album sounds cringe for some reason. It’s boring and nothing special. Not the worst I have listened to but cannot give it higher than 2/5
It is hard to ignore the importance of this album, as a fundamental glam rock record. And while I enjoyed listening to this, some of the glam rock that was to follow is very much superior.
I liked a lot of the songs - mostly the hits (Mambo Sun, Cosmic Dancer, Get It On). But there are definitely some weaker and repetitive songs on this album. Planet Queen was my least favourite, and I didn't feel much for Girl and Rip Off either.
I'm torn between a 3 or a 4 out of five, but I'm feeling generous today so 4/5 it is.
I’ve never really been into The Rolling Stones, and this album did not change that. It was a long album and all the songs felt pretty much the same to me. I constantly felt like I had heard the track before already. There were not really many standouts, and especially with a runtime of over an hour, it turns into quite a boring listen.
Favourite tracks: Rocks Off, Let It Loose, Shine A Light
Latin American jazz and tango fused with triphop.
This shit slaps.
What kind of name is Devendra Banhart
This really was a miss for me. It was all very boring and I did not love his vocal delivery. There were some nice guitars here and there but that was all I could appreciate.
Also, I hate sitars.
I never knew I would enjoy one hour of piano improvising this much. This never got boring at any time and his playing is just incredible (I can only dream of being able to play the piano like this). The backstory behind this concert is very interesting as well.
This list needs more albums like this.
Not bad at all. I was tapping my foot along with quite a few songs. But I have to agree with what other reviews have said: this album is just very repetitive. Plus, I’m not the biggest fan of club sounds.
I enjoyed this very much. Reminded me of Bowie and The Clash and it sounds so ahead of its time. Definitely strange, but in all the good ways.
Favourite songs: Shot By Both Sides, Motorcade, Parade
I think he is heartbroken guys
I guess this was fine and most of the songs rocked pretty hard, but I’m not the biggest fan of live albums or The Who. Surely there must have been some studio albums that could have been on here instead of this.
Fun collection of short ska/reggae songs, and they even sound quite punky at times. The only ska I ever really heard was by Madness so it was fun to hear another band, although I think I like Madness better - but that is only after having heard this one album for the first time.
Very dancy, but wasn’t in love with the vocal performance. Probably not something I’ll return to.
Man I love Stevie Wonder. Most of the songs are instantly catchy and so funky. However, I just wish some songs would be a bit faster: I'm a bigger fan of uptempo Stevie than ballad Stevie.
Favourite tracks: Maybe Your Baby, Superstition, I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever)
This album really surprised me. I am not the biggest fan of folk music and I was expecting a difficult and boring listen.
I was wrong. Scarborough Fair / Canticle is so beautiful and I loved Homeward Bound and The 59th Street Bridge Song as well. The songs are all short and sweet songs, and the harmonies and occasional strings are incredible.
I think the first half of this album is pretty awesome but this unfortunately changes from Under African Skies onwards. These songs aren’t nearly as strong in my opinion, with That Was Your Mother being my least favourite. Still, there is nothing bad at all on here, so it’s a solid 4 stars.
Favourite tracks: Graceland, Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, You Can Call Me Al
I don’t know what to think about this album. It was certainly an interesting combination of genres and influences, but at times I felt like the sounds were distorted or weird just for the sake of it and it was very all over the place.
But, I must give him this, he’s a very unique artist - this album sounded like it came from a completely different person than the last one I listened to.
Not bad but didn’t really hit me. I guess I wasn’t really in the mood for this.
NOTE: I only listened to the original tracklist of 10 songs. I skipped all the bonus tracks.
A bit too long and not really an album for me, but I’ve heard worse on this list. Liberation and Dreaming of the Queen were a bop. Go West was fun as well.
This being one of the lowest rated albums overall on this site, I braced myself for the worst.
But you know what? This isn’t even that bad. And at times, I even enjoyed it. Especially Sweat Loaf, Graveyard (the second one) and 22 Going On 23. I found myself laughing at The O-Men and Kuntz: those songs are just ridiculous.
This was certainly and experience, but probably not something I’ll return to.
Such a shame that this isn't (in full) on Spotify: now I had to listen to it on youtube with ads in between :((
This might be one of the funkiest things I've ever heard. Such rich musical arrangements and I was grooving along the whole time.
GROOVY! Really doesn’t sound like over an hour at all, this went by so quick. It’s like a 3.5, but I’ll be rounding down.
Nope, didn’t really like this. There was so much going on but it all felt very incoherent. They try too much to really succeed in anything.
Some songs were just outright annoying, like Hotel and Clockwork Creep.
I mean, what more can I say about this? Definitely my favourite Beatles album. Absolute peak.
I did not expect how much I would enjoy this record. When it started off I was not feeling this at all, but from Despair (which sounded like it could be on Bowie's Low or Heroes) onward it really changed and it turned into a very chill and interesting album.
While I am normally not really into synth pop, I like what they’ve done with this album and it also sounds pretty great. And seeing that this is from 1979, it appears very much ahead of its time. So props to that I guess.
This is such a weird album. Like many other reviews before have said, it goes from celebrating female empowerment on one song to bashing and slut shaming women on the other (most clearly in Nasty Girl).
The beats were okay but nothing to write home about. Moreover, this album is LONG. The first three songs are somewhat enjoyable but after that it just turns into repetitive and annoying slop.
Boring and bland. Nothing particularly stood out to me (except for Calvary’s middle section) and everything was a bit too long.
Did not like this at all. Very repetitive and all the guitar solos sound the same. Lyrics like “Dig that steam, giant butt / Makes me scream, I get nuh-nuh-nothing” on Drop Dead Legs are awful, and the lyrics overall are pretty bland.
Finally some Bowie! And what an album. This isn’t even my favourite of his, but man, this is so good.
Five Years, Soul Love, Moonage Daydream and Starman to start the album with?! Awesome opening. Although It Ain’t Easy is the only “meh” song on here, the album quickly recovers itself with Lady Stardust and Star. Hang On To Yourself is great as well and the title track has an amazing guitar riff.
After Suffragette City we get to Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide. Man, what a song, and what a way to close off this album. Probably my favourite song off the album.
Absolutely perfect glam rock.
I listened to this album while doing some chores. It made doing them more enjoyable.
I’ve tried several times, but I can’t bring myself to give this 5 stars. It’s a great album, of course, and there are many bangers on here. But this album also has On The Run (I hate that song).
But the production is awesome, and the overall sound is incredible.
Of course the acapella singers are very talented. But honestly, an entire album of this music gets boring quickly.
Kind of Leonard Cohen-y, but not much special. A bit boring.
And my god, what an awful album cover.
Actually enjoyed this more than I expected. This was nice. Loved her voice and the strings in the background (but also the music more generally). I don’t know when I would return to this but it was great to have heard this.
This was fine and pretty chill, but there were so many skits/interludes. Some songs were a bit boring (Pilot Jones, White).
I think I prefer Blonde.
This is probably not meant to be an enjoyable listen, but man, this was worse than I expected.
This deserves its current spot as the third lowest rated on this site.
So joyous and funky. Awesome vocal performance and the music is on point. Some songs just hit less I guess.
I feel like I’m in a tavern waiting for my ale and chunk of meat to arrive
Yup, I absolutely loved this. I was immediately hooked (the opener is so good).
There is just something about sample-based music that tickles my brain in a special way. I liked how some samples were recurring in multiple songs.
I can see how some people would find it repetitive or annoying, but this to me just hits.
Favourite tracks: Since I Left You, Two Hearts In 3/4 Time, Frontier Psychiatrist
This is my third The Who album and I am not even 100 albums in. How is that possible? Surely they don’t have that many albums on this list. The other two albums did not do much for me anyways.
This is definitely the most interesting album of them yet, but that doesn’t make it fun to listen to immediately. Definitely very psychedelic but some songs are quite dull. I Can See For Miles was fun though. There are also so many interludes.
But I must say that I enjoyed this more than the other albums from The Who I listened to. This is a 3.5, but I’ll round down because of that godawful cover.
PS. Do they know that the emphasis in Armenia is on the e and not on the i?
Funny to get this the day after The Who Sell Out: like with the Who, this is now my third Beck album and I’m not even 100 albums in. I believe there are still some The Who albums left, but I should be done with Beck after this (I think).
One thing I can appreciate is the variety of genres both across and within albums (even if I don’t always like it) and this one is no different. I think I enjoyed this one the most yet, but nearing the end some songs dragged a bit.
E-Pro, Que’ Onda Guerro, Black Tambourine, Hell Yes
Very boring and dull album where everything sounded the same. I’m also not a big fan of the breathy vocal performance.
I really wish I could enjoy this type of music but to me it all sounds the same and gets boring eventually. Her voice is beautiful though.
This is pretty great. Muddy Waters is a legend of course. There is a certain drive that pushes this record on and on. I suppose this would be perfect for a roadtrip.
Album #100!! Although I had hoped for something more fun.
I can appreciate psychedelic rock / blues jams for a while, but more than an hour is just too much. It didn’t sound bad at all, just a bit tiring.
This is definitely the worst album I’ve listened to so far. I think this is what a hell would sound like. You can’t convince me the vocalist says actual words. Just noise and screams. No.
This was a nice experience. This stayed interesting all the way through, and it was a pleasant surprise that I actually knew some of the hits.
I liked this less than expected. It started off a bit too slow for me, and while I liked the latter songs more, it still fell a bit short.
As opposed to Electric Warrior, I knew none of the songs from this album. That didn’t matter though, as it was a very pleasant listening experience. I especially liked Buick Mackane, Ballrooms Of Mars and Chariot Choogle. Looking again at all these song titles they don’t make any sense, haha.
This really surprised me. From how the album cover looked to the genre mentioned here (singer songwriter), I wasn’t expecting much. But this was pretty fun. I had never heard of this artist and don’t think I would have ever come across this if it wasn’t for this list.
It started of very strong with H>A>K and Did You See Butterflies but it kind of lost me for a while afterwards. I also liked The Architect, but Ravenspoint was definitely my favourite.
I really loved this album. I remember I listened to this album once before and I didn’t think much of it, but returning to this now I guess I notice many things I didn’t back then.
I loved the ambiance of this, the extended ‘soundscapes’ I guess you’d call them. The opener is probably my favourite, but Red Eyes, An Ocean In Between The Waves, Burning and In Reverse are great as well.
This slow, mellow vibe was just perfect for a Monday morning bus ride.
I liked the opener, but overall the album is a bit forgettable. Also not the biggest fan of his vocals.
I mean this was okay, but I don’t see myself returning to this quickly. Maybe when I’m studying. I liked Radio 7 and Don’t Die Just Yet the most.
I knew (and liked) some songs off this album already, but the album as a whole is absolutely awesome. Very catchy, yet with very sad and emotional lyrics.
Favourites: Drive, The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite, Everybody Hurts, Man On The Moon, Nightswimming, Find The River
I had to get into the sound of this album for a while, but at the third song it clicked more with me. I really liked the drums throughout the album and the title track is a banger. Very ahead of its time.
Also, this album sounds exactly like how the cover looks.
There are some bangers on this album, but it is also pretty repetitive. I might return to this someday, but that also depends on my mood and the occasion.
I actually enjoyed this way more than I expected. To my surprise, I knew the opening track and it was also fun to hear that Stevie Wonder sample on Inna City Mamma.
All songs were very groovy and although the album is quite long, I was not once boring while listening.
This is not something I’d normally listen to, and I’m not sure if and when I would ever return to this, but it was a nice experience. It’s like a 3.5 but I’ll round up.
It might come as a surprise, but I’m not a big fan of weird French grunts.
Normally I quite like dragged out funky jams, but this was a bit boring at times. And I also don’t want to listen to a 16-minute drum solo.
I know how influential these guys were but I just can’t bring myself to like The Velvet Underground. Everything sounds so fucked up but not in a fun or cool way but in a way that absolutely drives me insane.
Absolutely love this. I remember a few years ago I was one of those people that would only listen to 60s and 70s rock and never really opened up to other genres. For some reason, I listened to this album one day and I think that was the start of a change in my music taste. This remains one of my favourite hiphop albums.
Also, this cover is one of my favourites, it’s so pretty
As opposed to A Tribe Called Quest which I listened to yesterday, I’m not a big fan of Eminem. I don’t really like his overly controversial and graphic style.
Yup, loved this album. I knew This Is The Day and Uncertain Smile (which is one of my favourite songs ever) already, but the rest is pretty cool as well. Very very 80s with all the synths but not annoying like other music from the era and although most tracks are quite long, they never overstay their welcome in my opinion. Groovy all throughout.
Great album and great songwriting. Very moving and definitely the most straighforward social comentary album so far. I would definitely safe this for another listen.
I quite like The Kinks, even though I think this is their first al in I’ve listened to in full; I know them mostly from their hits.
Very catchy album overall, but it still sounds very much of the time.
It’s okay, but not too special. Not something I would return to again. Also, minus points for it being a compilation album.
Okay album, though sometimes a bit boring. This is probably a 3.5 but I won’t be rounding up.
Production is awesome, though it gets a bit repetitive as the album goes on.
I definitely did not mind listening to this, but it was not something that stuck with me after I finished it.
The opener and Another Girl, Another Planet were pretty fun listens and probably my favourites. The Immortal Story is great as well.
“Medúlla received critical acclaim from music critics, with many calling it ‘unique’, although others deemed it ‘confusing’.” (Wikipedia)
This quote sums up the album pretty well: it’s very weird and it left me confused in the end, but the production was awesome and the songs are by no means bad. The unique concept kicks it up a notch.
You can’t go wrong with any of the Bowie albums on this list, but this one is probably my least favourite (together with The Next Day). Bowie himself described this as “plastic soul” and I feel like that’s a pretty fitting term.
This is by no means a bad album and I enjoy it quite a bit (especially Fascination and Fame), but in my opinion Station To Station that followed the next year perfected the soulful, funky sound that Bowie started with this album.
I mean, it’s alright; at least better than all the shit they made after this. Politik, The Scientist and I guess also Clocks are pretty good songs, but the rest is just a bit boring and dragged out to be honest.
Now that I like Fiona Apple, how long does it take for me to become a manipulative boyfriend?
The album was okay, but it’s just not really my genre. Hard Feelings/Loveless was a great song though.
Uninteresting. I did not like the singer’s voice.
I’m torn on this album. The beats are awesome and very funky, and the lyrical content is sadly still relevant. However, I’m not a fan of the sexism and misogyny woven throughout.
There are some real bangers on here, but also some tracks that I found to be a bit bland. I’ll rate this 3 stars, which is a shame because I hoped I would like this better.
Sick album cover though.
Loved the dynamics and the tension on here. Very raw, very punky, and it reminded me a bit of the Pixies at times.
I listened to this album before, and I can definitely appreciate the music more this time around. Even though I loved it before, it has gone from a 4 to a 5/5 for me now.
The album starts off super strong with Honey and Find My Baby. Porcelain, which follows, is one of my favourite songs ever. The first half is filled with triphop/dance bangers like these.
The second half is much more ambient and a bit slower, and I like it much more than the first time I listened.
Also, great album cover.
There were some great moments on here (I liked Crying and Red Dress very much), but there is also some annoying stuff in here. I also don’t know what to think of the singer’s voice.
Good album. A bit bluesy, a bit folky, a bit of everything to be honest.
I mean, what can I say about this album? It might just be my favourite Bowie record. It’s him at his most experimental, a great achievement at the end of such a long career.
I did not consciously experience Bowie’s passing, but I am of course familiar with the context. Therefore, it does not have such a heavy emotional impact on me as some others have mentioned in the reviews, though I always have goosebumps listening to this album.
After the weird, lush opener of the album, we can groove along with the energetic and lyrically graphic ‘Tis A Pity She Was A Whore. Lazarus is a devastating song, but it might be my favourite. Sue (Or In A Season Of Crime) is fast and groovy like ‘Tis A Pity, with some of the craziest drumming I’ve ever heard. And man, that outro. Girl Loves Me might be my least favourite song on here, but I love the electronic aspects of it. Dollar Days and I Can’t Give Everything Away transition into each other and are the perfect way to end this album: they are sad, they are beautiful, they are an emotional goodbye.
Fastest 5⭐ I’ve ever given. Absolutely love this album. Love love love. RIP BOWIE
More than TWO HOURS of country music?? I didn’t mind everything on here, but this is just a way too long runtime.
This wasn’t too bad but some songs are so boring and I’m not a big fan of her vocals. They’re way too breathy and sound so uninteresting.
There are some great soulful moments on this record, but sometimes it gets very dull as well. The pacing is just a bit too slow for me.
I don’t know why I’ve never listened to a full The Cure album. This is awesome! Very groovy and grand, yet at the same time spacey and lush.
Meh I don’t know. This did not do much for me, but wasn’t bad either. Twenty Four Hours was a great song tho.
Though this album did not blow me away, it was a great listening experience. Just a tiny bit drunk after a family reunion turned into an evening of drinking, this album grounded me again on the way back. I can definitely see myself returning tot his again.
Iconic album art and album as a whole, but one that I never listened to before. It was a fun listen and I liked the samples (the When The Levee Breaks drums opening up the album are awesome), but I think there are definitely better hiphop albums on here. Fight For Your Right is an awesome song of course.
I just don’t get The Velvet Underground.
Great album, so psychedelic, so experimental. If it wasn’t for Yellow Submarine, this would have been a perfect album. Still, easy 5 stars.
Great album, awesome use of samples. Just a bit long and it lost a bit of my attention towards the end. Anyway, 4 stars.
Very fun album, I liked the pacing of it. Just great to rock out to.
Pretty boring, and it does not sound special at all. Why is this on here?
Great production but got a bit tired of the interludes and skits and also a bit long.
The definition of a 3 star album.
I really love the sound of Portishead and all their albums are bangers. This one, however, does feel a bit disjointed for me at times and therefore it is the lesser of the two inclusions on this list.
Still great tho.
Not the biggest fan of (heavy) metal, but this was okay.
I liked this a lot less than I did Crooked Rain Crooked Rain. While I did return to that album a few times, I really can’t see myself doing that with this one.
Great musicianship and did not sound bad, but I don’t see myself returning to this any time soon.
I used to be such a big queen fan. Anything 70s classic rock to be honest. In the years that followed, my music taste expanded and all those bands returned a bit more to the background, and I started listening to Queen a lot less. Every time I listen to an album by them, I just think to myself “man, I should listen to more Queen.”
This album is Queen’s heaviest and most prog-sounding, switching it up everywhere they go. From soft and sweet folksy Melodie’s do heavy hitting, almost metal guitar riffs. This works really well on songs like March Of The Black Queen or Father To Son, but sometimes, only sometimes, the album as a whole feels a bit disjointed.
This album is certainly one of their most underrated. There are not really any hits on it, but it bangs and it’s great. 4/5
This is so excruciatingly boring. The beats, the lyrics, nothing goes anywhere. The songs are too long as well.
I hate to say it, but except for maybe “Who You Funkin’ With?” I don’t think I enjoyed anything off of here.
Generally, I am not a fan of metal. Right now, it is my lowest rated genre through this generator.
But this album is great. It’s heavy and gritty, Ozzy’s vocals are awesome (rest in peace) and the production is great. I was so surprised by how soft this album could be as well. Changes was a beautiful song and Laguna Sunrise as well.
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. From the look of the cover I was not expecting much, but I actually really enjoyed this. I loved the shoegaze-y vibe of it, and it felt very inspired by The Smashing Pumpkins. I could have done without some songs (esp. Minnesoter and Green), but overall, great album.
I don’t get The Rolling Stones. The album is okay and there are some fun songs (Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Bitch) but overall, this did not do much for me.
I did not necessarily enjoy this album, but I’m not sure you should. I didn’t hate it either. Right now, it’s a 3, but it is one I might return to, as I found it an interesting listen
I did not hate the music, and at times quite liked it, but I just cannot stand the vocals. Especially with a runtime of over an hour, the instrumentals can not safe it completely.
Awesome album. Loved the beats and even though I didn’t understand the lyrics a lot of times, his flow was great as well. The skits are a bit long and much at times tho.
Nothing bad, but ultimately a bit boring. I liked Punchbag, Sunshine and Zia the most.
I am a bit disappointed because I really hoped I would like this. I did about half of the time. Monster and Blame Game were my least favourite. Best song on here, of course, is Runaway.
It was however, fun to recognise the samples throughout the album.
Bro is NOT music. I hated his style, his weird squeaky voice and most of the beats. Child Playz was straight up goofy. The only thing that could have saved this from a one star rating is the occasional catchy beat, but that is canceled out by the awful album cover.
Not bad, but also not very exiting. I’m also not sure what to think of Neil Young’s voice.
I quite like this album when it’s firing on all cylinders: there are some really great hypnotic grooves on here. But that runtime is just ridiculous and a lot of the album is also quite boring (Adrift 😴 😴). Therefore, not something I’ll ever return to.
Very solid! I can see myself returning to this.
I’ve heard many great things about this album so I’m a bit disappointed. I don’t really like her voice to be honest. The rest didn’t do much for me either. Maybe I need to return to this later again but right now it’s a 3.
This jazz album sounded a bit more energetic than some of the other jazz records I listened to before. Still, it is hard for jazz to keep me fully invested. I like it as background music, but I also think there is background music that I enjoy more than this.
Early Beatles perfection. Just great songwriting and catchy songs all round (though I must say, You Can’t Do That is a bit creepy)
I don’t know man. Not particularly enjoyable.
The opener is, of course, awesome. Everything after sounds a bit dull in comparison. Not bad, it’s like a 3.5 stars.
Unfortunately, I’ll be rounding down.
I quite liked this, and that story in the top review is crazy and hilarious. Might give this another listen, but for now it is a solid 4 stars.
I went in expecting to totally not like this, but it was better than I imagined. This just is not my style of music, but there were some moments that I really enjoyed, and there is some great musicianship on here. After a while everything just sounds the same to me tho and it kinda gets boring.
So in the end, not bad, but not something I’d return to.
There are some okay moments on here, but most of this just is not for me. It doesn’t help either that I do not enjoy the sitar.
Awesome, very fun listen. Just a bit too long tho.
Reminded me a lot of Simon and Garfunkel
Honestly, this is on par with Rumours. I don’t see why this gets rated so harshly sometimes.
I don’t know, this did not do much for me. Personal Jesus and Enjoy the Silence are awesome songs but the rest was just a bit boring and bland to me.
It was okay. I’m not a big country fan and I also don’t really like the banjo and the slide guitar thing. Her voice is awesome tho.
When this started, I thought I hated it but I got used to the singer’s voice after a while. After that point, it became a very banging album.
Wtf. How is this on here? That voice is just ridiculous. It’s sad, because the music wasn’t all that bad. But with a singer like that…
I’ve always wanted to listen to this album, but never did for some reason. I knew it was on this list, so I was waiting for the day to come.
Just awesome chill, smooth, laid back jazz. I can definitely see why this is a classic. It was a pleasant surprise to find out I had heard The Girl From Ipanema before.
beep boop blip
feel like I’m on a spaceship
This was okay. There were some songs that I quite liked (the opener especially), but there were also some that were a bit mediocre. It’s also a bit too long. The beats are very cool tho.
Together with Blackstar and Low, my favourite Bowie album.
Here, Bowie perfected his “plastic soul” that we first saw on Young Americans, but it’s also way more adventurous: the opener is a 10-minute epic, and one of the funkiest songs Bowie ever made. We can hear the soul also in his vocal performances, specifically Stay and Wild Is The Wind.
The whole album has a non-stop drive that makes these 38 minutes fly by in an instant. Such a classic.
I’m not sure why I didn’t like this very much. I enjoy punk, it’s an iconic album, it’s produced by Bowie… a lot of the ingredients were there but in the end I did not like listening to it that much. But I understand how influential this record was.
This was just such a fun listen. It’s funky, it’s funny, and the beats are so cool. I love A Tribe Called Quest
I don’t know, a bit boring. Heard better stuff from this era and this genre. Between a 2 and a 3 for me
I don’t know. White Rabbit and Somebody To Love are great songs but everything just kind of sounds the same. Not bad, but not as fun as I had hoped.
Awful voice. I can see how this was way ahead of its time in 1977, but there is honestly nothing enjoyable about this album.
It’s sad, it’s beautiful, it’s rich, and overall a great album. You can really feel Cave’s grief. Listened to this one quite a few times and while it is not a clear 5/5 for me, it can see it become one someday.
For now, a 4/5.
This is such a cool album cover, but the album doesn’t really hold up for me. It’s trippy, psychedelic, and all over the place. It’s definitely unique and pretty fun at times, but I’m not sure if I’ll ever return to it.
Wait, what did I think of this album again?
Oh yeah, forgettable.
This is very different than the previous album by The White Stripes I listened to (Elephant), but I’m not sure if I like it better. I like the pianos that are present here, but Jack White’s voice can be annoying sometimes.
I’m very torn between a 3 and a 4.
His son makes better music
The only thing keeping this from a 1… is One.
This is so weird, but it’s awesome. It’s so out there but in the best way possible. This was a really fun listen.
I should probably dive more into Brazilian music, since I also really liked África Brasil by Jorge Ben Jor and Getz/Gilberto (featuring João Gilberto of course).
There’s so much going on. It’s difficult for me to rate this, because some moments I really enjoyed while others annoyed me. Also not sure what to think of the vocal performance.
Overall, not a bad album, but I’m having some mixed feelings. 3/5
Great album. Loved her voice and knew quite some songs apparently (though mostly as covers). Definitely will listen to this again when I’m in the mood for it.
I’m not sure. It’s decent and a bit boring I think. Did not do very much for me. Also, goofy (especially Cars Are Cars).
Pretty fun and enjoyed this more than I initially thought
Influential? Sure. Very early heavy metal type of music. Does it make for a fun listen? Meh. Only in some parts.
Such a cool album. Loved the sampling which made for some very interesting beats. I liked the medley type of short songs that ended the album very much as well.
Cool album. Very funky and catchy all the way through.
Fun album, with an interesting sounds and awesome beats.
This did not do much for me to be honest. It was a bit forgettable. Also, this album cover is horrendous.
I had high expectations because I loved Superfly so much, but I didn’t like this as much. The pacing, that was just awesome in Superfly, seemed off here, I guess? I’m not sure. Cool album cover tho.
The opener and Miss Me Blind are okay, I guess, but the rest of the album is just boring 80’s slop.
Enjoyed this more than I expected actually. It was fun and energetic and I did not hate the vocals (something I often have with hardcore punk). It’s like 3.5 stars, but I think I’ll round down for this one.
It was okay. A bit repetitive I think. Of course very influential but not necessarily awesome.
Pretty fun album. A bit all over the place but an interesting mix of rock music, electronica and hiphop. Weaker songs are definitely Man Research (Clapper) and Starshine.
Meh. Good thing it wasn’t any longer.
I mean, how am I supposed to rank an album which has the line “ant music for sex people, sex music for ant people”?
Some real bangers on this album. Still waiting for Innervisions and Songs in the Key of Life.
Very solid (brit)pop album
It was okay, but nothing really special
Grooooovy. Hypnotic. Weird. Very danceable. I did not know yet that Brian Eno produced this: does he only produce bangers of albums?
This certainly is a short album, and I certainly is about love. What they didn’t tell in the title, however, is that it sounds very outdated and cringe (especially the lyrics).
Very repetitive, everything sounded the same. This sounded like an hour of commercial music. Also, minus points for the hassle it was to find this album anywhere.
Very cool album. The first half is really calm, serene even, with beautifully soft electronic sounds. The second half is a much louder counterpart, but it is a cool combination and does not bother me in the slightest.
I don’t know. Sounds very much of its time and not really special to me. Great album cover tho.
I liked this album. It had many interesting sounds and was pretty catchy as well. The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul was a great song, and so was Dear God.
This is sick. Very cool. I had listened to this before but never returned to it, something I will definitely be doing now.
I think German electronic music is one of my favourite “niche” music genres (as a non-German), but I found this one to be subpar to the others I have listened to. Still pretty good, beep boop and stuff.
I liked Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme a lot better. I read that it was a concept album, but I don’t think I fully understood or grasped the concept. This seemed unfinished almost, a bit all over the place. And Voices of Old People really was just that.
Yeah, it was okay but just very whacky. I didn’t like the (female) vocals very much either.
Awesome. A lot more “straightforward” than their later stuff, but still a great piece of music.
I despise this kind of music. The fact that this is over an hour long is just… The awful vocals, the corny lyrics, the reverb on the drums, everything about this is bad.
Very weird, but pretty cool too. Besides krautrock, it sounded almost like shoegaze as well (especially the first track)
Some fun moments, but overall pretty boring and waaay too long.
This is such a crazy album. I’m not sure if I like it in its entirety as some parts are a bit annoying, but there were some really interesting moments and the production is awesome.
And Paper Planes is a great song, didn’t know it was by her.
There was not much special here and it wasn’t too exiting, but it was pretty fun to listen to. It’s between 3 and 3,5 stars for me. Might return to it again sometime.
I usually don’t really listen to reggae, but this was a very cool album
Very different than anything Paul ever recorded with The Beatles. Definitely not better, as it felt a bit unfinished. Most songs were very short and it made the album feel a bit all over the place.
Very sick album, but why is Mezzanine not on this list? Without a doubt their best work. However, what this album might lack in Mezzanine’s mood/atmosphere, it makes up for it in “catchiness” I guess, with funky baselines and synths throughout.
Awful cover, less awful music. Some good songs on here, but I didn’t really like the singer’s voice all that much.
This felt so much longer than 47 minutes. Absolutely not a fan of the 80’s production.
3.5
I used to love Muse when I was younger. Not so much anymore now, tho this is a pretty fun album. Their debut and Origin of Symmetry are their better albums.
Very dreamy and ethereal. Very cool.
Absolutely awful. Just as bad as the other Def Leppard album in here (Pyromania). At least this one was shorter. Happy to know that there is no more Def Leppard on this list.
I think I liked this better than Purple Rain. Is that a hot take? The only problem is that the songs are too long, gets a bit boring sometimes.
Trying too hard to be something new and interesting, failing miserably. Some okay moments, but overall I did not like this.
Don’t understand a word, but such a fun album.
Not my favourite Bowie album, but the cover is iconic. Songs like Time, The Jean Genie and Lady Grinning Soul are among my favourites of his, but I don’t care much for songs like Panic in Detroit or Let’s Spend The Night Together.
4/5
Not a fan of Elvis Costello.
Also, one of the worst album covers I have ever seen
I think there has definitely been better hiphop on here so far, but still it was a pretty fun album. Might return to it again sometime.
The story of this album bumps it up a point.
Generic and dull, except for Angels which is a great pop song.
Is this just a collection of demos? Almost none of these songs sound finished and are just small bits. Too much all over the place.
Awesome. The title track is great, and Cecilia and The Boxer are classics. I did not know Keep the Customer Satisfied yet but it’s a favourite.
5 stars.
Good if you would be high on drugs I guess.
Didn’t like this very much. A bit too slow and repetitive.
Might change to a 5 later. In any case, wayyyyy better than …And Justice For All
I actually enjoyed this way more than I expected. I had such a fun time listening to this and it stayed interesting throughout even though it is quite long. I’m guessing this might be a surprise 5 star album for me. I can definitely see myself playing this again.
I don’t know. I’ve heard better hiphop on this list. It was a bit skit-heavy for me.
If Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads was a country album. Or the other way around?
The proof that Mayonaise is better than Ketchup.
Great album cover, mediocre music.
I listened to this album on the plane. It was okay music, although sometimes a bit plain.
I don’t know. Didn’t like this as much as the top reviews hyped it up to be
I don’t get the appeal. I also could have used something more chill and melodic today, but oh well.
Wasn’t a big fan of the vocals but there were some okay moments on the album
Again, not a fan of Elvis Costello, but this might be the best I’ve heard from him so far.
It was okay.
This album cover does not fit this music at all. A pleasant listen, but no big standouts or anything like that.
Pretty uninspiring hard rock
“Billy Corgan stupid! Billy Corgan annoying voice!”
Shut up. 5 stars.
I don’t know. After a while Bob Dylan just bores me
Very fun and funky. Will listen to it again
Pretty interesting, and one I might return to. It’s something like a 3.5 for me at this point but I can maybe see it change in the future.
Just a very good banging indie album
I mean, not as good as David Bowie of course but still had some pretty good songs.
3.5 I’d say. Might return to this sometime.
Probably not the best David Bowie album, but I enjoy listening to this so much. Just so fun. It has some of his best work (Life on Mars, Changes), although some songs are a bit more weak.
And Quicksand is a seriously underrated track.
Pretty good, and I enjoyed this more than I expected. Maybe sounds a bit samey at times.
I’m thinking a 3.5, but I’ll round up.
Didn’t do much for me, but Hallowed Be Thy Name is a sick song.
For 1978 this is pretty innovating. But it’s really not fun to listen to, and that is what is most important in the end.
I liked this more than I would have imagined. I’m not a huge fan of Van Morrison but this was quite a fun listen. It’s pretty long, but it was good to study to.
Surprising 4 stars from me.
