Amazing.
Lush, layered, so well produced.
Never been a big country fan, but I'm open to every album. It's a bit same, same but I did like it.
Terrible.
This, kids, is a lesson.
Don't take drugs and read Tolkin and record t the same time.
Music was Meh, Lyrics were primary school level.
Whoa. It's a tough listen, but i think it's unlike anything else before it, but lots after.
Ok, feels like there is just too much going on at times and its for the negative.
It had moments, but it felt like they just rushed to get stuff recorded rather than work though building the quality of those good moments, that could have been great.
I'd never listended to this album in full. I do like the Bowie and mostly I've like what ive I've listened to. Know the singles, so was pretty sure I'd like this album.
It was better than expected. Fantastic! Excellent album.
I liked this album. Sound was good, songs were varied and interesting.
If there was a fault for me it was wins voice. Just feels like a stronger voice would level it up.
Just good, loud, simple rock.
Mutt langes production is great. Sounds drag and clean still now.
This was actually a pretty amazing album.
I don't have a history with country music.
First listen: this is ok, but why is the first song reprised twice later in.
Bit of research and a deeper listen the 2nd and 3d time and wowee, it all makes sense.
So I read he was in a Prince cover band.
Could never tell...
It's a solid album.
Impressive as it's his first, and he played most of the instruments and produced it (again prince like).
Feel like he's trying to overdo the vocals at times.
Lyrics a little wishy washy.
Didn't click with me.
Reminded me a little of Mark Every, but i just couldnt find the hooks that grabbed me.
Raadiohead are amazing.
This is not their finest work though.
Some great moments, but for me most miss the mark.
Pretty good.
The Kendrick track is a standout for me.
Holy moly.
This is amazing!
Never listened to an album of Nina Simone, but know the popular songs.
Her voice is phenomenal.
Reportable this is a bit of a outakes/b side type album and It does though feel like it a bit.
It's a hot mess!
There's clearly an abundance of talent but Frank really needed a mate to tell him to quality not quantity.
Given he put out 3 albums in 1969, I'm of the belief that could have been one, and a mighty good one it could have been.
Never heard of this one.
Theres some great moments.
Getting nick Cave, tom waits vibes.
Album on Spotify is not the album, has about 6 extra songs on the end. Not for the betterment of the album either.
It feels a bit unfinished, which made sense when I read it was apparently demos, not properly finished songs.
Didn't think I knew this band and the cover art didn't have me looking forward to hitting play.
Turns out my fears were unfounded. Definitly know a few of the songs and they're solid.
The whole album is solid.
Welcome suprise.
So there are a few great songs and unsurprisingly they are hits, but theres a fair bit of filler too.
ABBA are definitely a band that deserve to added to, say a 1001 artists you must listen to, but I don't think this album really deserves it.
Meh,
There's a few Nickcave song I know and a couple of them I like.
Into your arms is excellent!, but sadly the rest of the album just kind of feel limp to me.
I dint think his lyrics and voice are enough to carry the minimalist approach to the overall songs.
Great production.
Probably a bit long. A couple less of the weaker songs and it would a excellent album.
Yeah, nah...
Just too much.
Look it's ok, but a bit beige really.
His voice kind of annoys me, the lyrics are ok, but at times feel like he's just waffling with la did da das, ah ums, etc.
When the tracks picks up with bass and drums it improves. The song in Spanish is a highlight, but too often it returns to acoustic guitar, annoying whiney voice and leads to disinterest for me
This is the guy at parties sitting in the corner making up songs to try to impress girls. To be fair its an impressive skill and probably works .. but, I'm not a girl looking for a cute hippy bearded Californian, so I guess it's just not resonating with me, I'll choose to enjoy the party with rockin tunes and my friends instead.
How did I know know this band.
Ive heard the clash, sex pistols, Ramones etc, but nobody I know has talked about wire.
This was an unknown gem.
Listening to their later stuff they were also post punk pioneers.
What a ripper!
All great aongs, great guitars, vocals. And the production is excellent.
Learning about the making of the this album I was shocked to hear it was made in a basement with homemade recoding equipment.
Not my cup of tea, but I see why this is on the list.
Inspiration for females in pink, rock etc.
Whoa - Incredible.
I was a teen in peak NIN time, but I just never got them. None of my friends did either, so I know if them, but never listened to an album. What a shame, but better late than never.
There is so much amazing stuff going on.
First listen was with a set of ear buds and I was thinking the production felt like it fell a little short.
Then I put it on the good headphones. Poduction is amazing!
Get past the dark themes (or maybe enjoy them), and it's clearly going to get the religious folk off side, but the whole package works, and it's bloody excellemt.
The guy has talent, no question.
I've never actually listened to a Eminem album in full. I do know a lot of the singles though and I was kind of excited to have an Eminem album to listen to.
As this album goes though its;
- too long, felt like it was dragging on, and i'd lost interest.
- subject matter is too often not ok. I get he's being controversial and confrontational and likely playing into a persona, and hopefully it's tongue in cheek, but rape, domestic violence are not laughing matters. I listen to the lyrics, and it turned me off liking a fair chunck of the tracks.
It's a pass from me.
Pretty solid album. No absolute standouts, but no shockers.
Just good solid rock
The is a example of why 80s music is awesome.
Awesome production. Great musicians (that bass!) and good solid tunes.
Definitely deserves to be in the list.
Yowser!
It it just me, or is it hot in here..
It's ok.
Franks a decent signer and jobins bossa nova is nice.
Good background music, but not exactly memorable, for me at least.not sure I'll ever listen to it again.
There's some odd moments but taking the album title in mind and after a couple of listens it all seems to work.
Queen are pretty damn good band. Freddie Mercury has a amazing set of pipes.
This is pretty incredible. I kind of wanted to hate it, but I can't.
Never really got into MJ in my youth. Listening to the album I totally get why it was so big.
There is probably 2 songs that are average, the rest are pretty damn good.
It's a nice album. Her voice is lovely, I don't dislike it.
But is all a bit same samey, and I do think there is anything here pushing boundaries to make it an album I need to listen to. In 20+ years time I wonder if "come away with me" will be noted as a album that inspired artists, or pushed the boundaries of a genre.
I'm not certain this is an album that deserves to be in this list.
Wow.
Heard of tom waits, but not really any of his music. Part of this challenge to listen to the 1001 albums was actually hearing artists that influened artists I like.
I really enjoyed this. The voice is no doubt unique, but it works with the simplicity of the music.and the lyrics are great.
After this I'll definitely be listening to more waits.
Looks like there's 4 in the list. Will be interesting to see if the 4 stand alone enough to be all included.
Probably could be a single album.
Starts feeling a bit long and tedious at the end until tusk, which though is awesome.
Sara too is a standout.
Feels like there is soon much anger and tension with the lyrics, but they pull together to make great songs.
Stevie Nicks writing is excellent. Quite a few of Buckinghams songs feel like they could have been polished to be gems, but he was just focused on getting stuff off his chest.
Anything after rumours, was probably going to be a letdown, but this is pretty solid and I feel has aged well.
Knew the big singles, never had listened to the album.
It's not revolutionary, but it's not bad.
The tracks are all mostly pretty decent, yeah the rap type verses are of a time, but it was a time.
People moaning about the gangsta type lyrics, yeah they are possibly a little cringe and definitely don't relate to me as a very white, middle class male, but that doesn't mean they are shit.
For all the people slagging them I hope you're not championing the mediaeval dungeons and dragons lyrics that seem to dominate a lot of prog and metal.
Perfectly fine album, does it belongs in the list.... Definitely not the worst I've heard in the list and not anywhere near the top, but 1001 albums is quite a few and there does deserve to be a mix across as many genres as possible.
Know the singles, don't mind them.
The rest is kinda just meh though.
Post triphop/Brit pop?
Ultimately the Gorillaz project was more than the music, BUT this project (1001 albums) is about albums.
The next 2 Gorillaz album are improvement on this.
I don't hate it, but I doubt I'd actively listen to it again.
Some really good songs and it feels like a snapshot in time of their environment (location, time, age, etc).
Quite a varied mix of styles and it's fun.
This small period seems to be a moment in time where British music was finding its feet again post what was a economic and music recession.
I think it deserves to be on the list, and is possibly one of the finer "britpop" albums.
Just not really my thing.
First few tracks are pretty solid, feels like it fades away in the middle, but finds it's groove again by the end.
It's feels like a lot of people dismiss RHCP due to their lead singer and lyrics.
The musicianship is top notch and I think if you step back and focus on the "whole", this album is pretty decent.
It would be foolish to dismiss jazz because scatting doesn't make sense..
Decent album.
First time listen for me.
The Brits took blues and did a pretty decent job of reinterpretation.
Slick playing, rod Stewart's vocals are a highlight.
Not so sure the lyrical content stands up as well nowadays.
Solid album though.
Firstly I Love U2!
3 of their albums are in my absolute favourite list. The unforgettable fire, Achtung Baby and Zooropa are master pieces. Joshua tree ain't too shabby and even rattle and hum has a special place in my heart.
This though folks ain't one.
They lost their edge. It's just paint by numbers radio rock pop schlop.
The masses seemed to love it, but it is absolutely NOT worthy of being in this list.
I hate the singles on this album and the rest is not great.
Ground beneath her feet is probably the only song I'd willing listen to. That though possibly could have been due to my joy of the album being over.
Very little Jazz history/experience.
I was feeling a bit overwhelmed looking at 5 songs across 42 minutes.
Anyway, here we go.
1st listen. Yeah its a lot. Songs felt overly long, every instrument gets a solo, and its all a bit same samey.
Still there must be something I'm missing, It's got so many 5 out of 5s.
So, did some research about Monk. Interesting cat, Turns out this is style of jazz is be bob.
2nd listen, yeah I'm appreciating it more. The solos feel less rambley and pointless.
3rd listen. Ok, this is pretty good. I would say I enjoy this.
I haven't heard my other Monk albums yet, and as mentioned, my history of jazz is limited.
I don't know if I'd actively listen to this gain, but would be great background music.
I'm glad I listened to it. I believe there's 2 more Monk albums in the list, so I'm looking forward to listening to them later.
Great voice.
Constant craving is a masterpiece.
The rest of the album though is pretty bland.
This is pretty incredible.
Electro pioneer really.
More warmth than kraftwork.
Heard of p-funk, but haven't really heard any.
Holy crapballs
That first track almost melted my brain.
The rest of the album was a treat.
Amazing! Looking forward to the other p-funk albums in the list.
Never quite got Rap/hip hop.
Middle class white boy, so probably not surprising.
Listening to this album objectively, this is a pretty impressive piece of work.
It's a concept album, a biography, a piece of social commentary.
It would be easy to dismiss it as a homage to gang lifestyle, but this is not that simple. Listen to the lyrics.
Amazing!
Exactly why I'm doing this excercise. To be open to styles of music I don't know, but have likely been missing out on.
I assume this is an important Rap/hip hop album.
I'll put my hand up that I'm an Australian, middle class, white boy, so this probably isn't supposed to resonate with me.
Production is great. I read most of this is not samples. It's funky. Hence the G-funk tag.
It's long, probably too long really. There's some bangers, but I reckon there is a fair amount of filler that wouldn't be missed. And the skits, slightly humorous once, why add them. It would be annoying hearing them time and time again if you played it a lot. 3 times and I was over them.
Lyrical content, yeah, that hasn't dated real well, and that's a shame, as some of it is really good. I wouldn't play this to my kids though purely due to the lyrical content.
Heard of the band through the song in risky business and that song is awesome.
This predates that. It's not a easy listen, well it is If it's background it is, but it really deserves more than that.
Find a quiet place, relax and listen in headphones. It awesome!
Not as robotic and cold as kraftwork.
Not so sure I'll listen to this again, but glad I did.
Just not really my cup of tea.
Appreciate a lot of it was live takes, so clearly a group of talented musicians.
If this doesn't get you toe tapping your not human.
Great album,
I'd forgot how good this album is.
I'd forgot how good jack White is.
Damn.
Pretty interesting album.
I enjoyed the explanation and then being able to follow it.
His playing seems amazing!
This was probably responsible for a lot of sitar in western music..
Scandi pop, But with a dark tinge.
The band are serious musicians and the lyrical content has adult themes.
Their later work is even better. Grand tourismo is great and Long gone before daylight is 5 star for me, a album I just keep going back to.
Amazing. The reason I'm doing this list.
I get the hate for kings of Leon. I could live happily never hearing sex on fire again.
I had this album when it came out (way before sex in fire), and I really liked it.
Rock, southern blues, brash, ballsey. it was just a bit different to what else was out there.
The thing is there a pretty damn good band and the fact there still selling out venues and making music backs that up.
I personally think this is the best of the albums they have in this list. Not sure they warrent 3 either
Kind of epitises late 90s-early 00s indies.
Nice, but just a little bland.
Cruisy, pleasant. Great cafe music.
