redefined sports bar ambiance
like the vocal harmonies, definitely hear it in the 50 years of music that came after it but none of the tracks really hit me
strong vocals and good beats, i dunno if she had to call me a lady boy though
Favourite track: Cold Lampin' With Flavor. laid-back, rhymes are fun and hit hard when they want to. yeah boyyyyyyy
First time listening to the full album and it just rocks. Favourite track: YYZ, but The Camera Eye is gonna stick with me forever too
Pretty interesting jazz record, tons of variance and improv and keeps a good beat. Favourite track: Minawa
vocal harmonies go crazy, let alone the instruments. Favourite track: Run to the Hills
Only ever heard Killing in the Name before this, the funk, rap, and metal blend was an extremely pleasant surprise. The lyrics go without saying. Favourite track: Take the Power Back
The passion in this one is very apparent even if the story doesn't quite resonate with me. I'd give it a high 3 if I could. Favourite track: The Promised Land
High concept and evocative lyrics. The instrumentation is more of a backdrop for the poetry, though.
Pretty cool riffs but I don't see myself listening to it often. Favourite track: Cecilia Ann
Lyrics are great but the production doesn't interest me all that much
Instrumentation doesn't feel as good to me as Buildings and Food but it's definitely interesting. Favourite track: Houses in Motion
dig the experimentation, it still sounds modern today. never heard of acid jazz til now
Not quite enough variety for me, La Grange and Waitin' for the Bus were good while I was paying attention
Brief moments in each track where something is going on, if only they put those together into one good one. Nice background noise otherwise
Every other track is a single I've heard 100 times but it still manages to feel cohesive front to back. It goes without saying but her vocals are truly generational. Favourite track: Rolling in the Deep
Maggot Brain leads with ten minutes of rock riffs that give way to some real soul. "You and your folks, me and my folks" probably still as resonant today. Favourite track: hit it and quit it.
Sounded like the whole decade of 90s dance pop in 1990, so good on them. "Groove is in the Heart" is the crowd pleaser and I agree.
Funniest concept album I've ever seen. random brand jingles after songs and they were only paid for some of them. The Coca-Cola chant into "Melancholia" hits
The country/punk rock fusion is interesting but ultimately not my thing. Favourite track: Universal Corner
Not sure what I expected but this was really above and beyond it. There's a lot of folk but it manages to feel unique from track to track. Favourite track: Sisters of the Moon
Strong sound but it doesn't really innovate past the halfway point. Favourite track: Celebrity Skin
I associate half of this album with high school because of the seven singles released for it over two years. The lyrics aren't much of anything, and the contrast in the themes along with the abrupt transitions in the album really drives home that this is just a collection of singles. At least I still like the production, I think. Favourite track: Style
Listened to this one a decade ago and it still holds up. Processed and dreamlike but the acoustic sounds still come through very well. Favourite track: Shiver
Great folk and blues record, lyrics really hit just about every emotion. Favourite track: Run That Body Down
exactly as advertised. Frustration is the most insane track 1 I've ever heard. Favourite track: it's still Tainted Love baby
classic sports bar ambiance
Nice ambient instrumentals, but I'm not in love with any of the tracks
decent folk rock, nothing popped out to me
Great variety rock, love the production. Favourite track: Que Onda Guero
Pretty good album for what it is, and what it is is some nice loops. Favourite track: Hail Bop
Enjoyed British ska more than I thought I would. Favourite track: Friday Night, Saturday Morning
Pretty hard hitting lyrics, though the harmonica hurts my ears a bit when it comes in. Favourite track: Masters of War
House music already isn't my thing, so I can't really find a reason to put this one on again
Liked the tracks on this one more overall than Maggot Brain, funk bands can play rock indeed. Favourite track, I mean come on: Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)
Required listening. The movie and track samples absolutely kick and the flow variety is very appreciated. Favourite track: Protect Ya Neck
Nonstop jam, favourite track: 400 years
Real bleak lyrics for upbeat folk jams. Favourite track: "Maybe the People Would Be the Times..."
Really wondered why this one wasn't as popular as its contemporaries since it does all the same stuff. Can't say that makes it stand out, though. Favourite track: Bury Me Deep in Love
I once played Blue Rondo in my jazz band in high school, so I'm intimately familiar with the time signatures in this one. I love math rock now too so it did something to my brain man. Favourite track: Take Five
Pretty lowkey instrumentation, not much of a fan of the writing. Favourite track: Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying
Era defining country, and by that I mean I heard a hundred songs like it on the radio as a kid. Favourite track: J'ai fait tout
Chameleon has lived in my head long before I listened to it because of band camp, and it's also because of band that I just can't say no to jam tracks. Favourite track: Chameleon
The variety here is really something special. Really love the stories she's telling in Cloudbusting and Jig of Life, and Waking the Witch is the absolute deep end of her experimentation. Safe to say I'm a fan now
Pretty subdued jazz throughout which keeps me from picking out a standout favourite. It's easy listening at least.
pretty funny and excellent storytelling, shaking my head whenever Da Bichez comes on so people know I don't agree
favourite track: You Can't Stop The Prophet
Generally not a fan of the production on the Who albums so far, so live music is already a big step up. Favourite Track: My Generation (15:46)
Extremely funky samples, some of the tracks go on a bit longer than needed though. Favourite track: Illn In Heaven
Super consistent in a very entertaining way, good sounds all around. Favourite track: The First Taste
Goes on a little too long for me for this kind of drawn-out, tender rock. Might be nice for a long drive home.
Sometimes you listen to an album and immediately clock you've been listening to references to it for years. Well-deserved too. Favourite track: Give Up The Funk
Pretty strong standouts, stays good throughout and the variety is much appreciated. Favourite track: Central Reservation
Last listened to this one in full a decade ago. I appreciate this one for being their darkest album I've listened to (everything pre 2020) and I find myself appreciating the first two tracks (Politik and In My Place) much more than I used to. Favourite track: Amsterdam
Very strong writing in Four Women and haunting melodies throughout. Her vocals are really unmatched.
There's a lot of funk and a little rock. The solos in That Lady and Summer Breeze are real good. No real complaints.
I enjoy the production - there's a real dreamy quality to it despite being straight up rock - but I'm kind of whelmed by the tracks overall.
Tuesday's Gone is a pretty solid, slower track, and much of the rest feels like I'm waiting for Free Bird.
Nice beats but not my scene, not really convinced it had to be this long either. Favourite track: Breathe.
I haven't listened to much of the Beach Boys but the sound here still feels like a significant departure, for better or worse. It doesn't exactly miss but I never really felt I had to listen that hard. Favourite track: Time.
The instrumentation feels very safe overall but the writing is really where Dylan has shined for me before and now. Favourite track: Visions of Johanna
Having the vocals to back up the dream pop they're playing really elevates it from good to greatness. Favourite track: Iceblink Luck
Tales of Brave Ulysses and Sunshine of your Love have just enough bite and Strange Brew is an excellent album opener. Can't say I feel like giving this guy the fractions of pennies from streaming revenue again though.
well-deserved reputation, I'm already a fan of concept albums in general but this one set the bar. Comfortably Numb works amazingly both in the context of the album and standalone.
Real good funk, probably would have been even better if I saw the movie. Favourite track: Superfly
Surprisingly "long" for 90 minutes since it's broken up into 4 parts. Doesn't feel perfectly cohesive even within those parts but it's definitely a kind of experimental I can dig. Favourite track: It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference
It's real strong as a concept album even if the lead single (Tightrope) is a little obvious. Love the gradual shift in sound from start to finish, too. Comparing BaBopByeYa to the first few tracks is night and day but it was real smooth getting there.
Even more catchy than people have given it credit for, Dum Dum Diddle and Tiger are the underrated earworms here. Favourite track: Dancing Queen
Pretty great vocals and live sounds, doesn't work for me as an album as well as it does a live set though
Really love the instrumentation in this one, always keeps me on my toes. I only ever heard the singles from this one before but I'm glad the rest of it is more of the good stuff. Favourite track: Knights of Cydonia
The flow and samples are great here but the lyrics are really lacking even compared to the other rap albums on this list. Can't see myself listening to most of these tracks again. Favourite track: Walk This Way
Decent enough textures but I'd forget a track as soon as it stopped playing.
I find the overall sound pretty interesting even if it doesn't step out of it much. Come On Eileen works amazingly as the final track at least.
Hard to knock it much at all, they're standards for a reason and his voice is iconic for a reason. The big band instrumentals could really be doing more, I guess
Pretty cool collection as described, glad for the feature tracks and the more folk inclusions because it really would be too much otherwise. Favourite track: The Curse of Millhaven
The instrumentation doesn't grab me at all but his vocals are unique at least. Hope his other albums are more interesting.
Smooth af, lyrics don't really say as much as I'd like but they sure can rhyme. Favourite track: Jazz (We've Got)
Pretty good selection across genres here and the strings are constantly the centre of attention. Now knowing the context, I wish I understood the lyrics. Favourite track: Tudo Que Você Podia Ser
ambiance for a horror thriller that doesn't exist
Pretty solid, driving rock. The soft spoken vocals kind of get old but they are nice in each track. Favourite track: Cosmic Dancer
Composition is nice, the lyrics read fine but they really feel hollow now.
Not really a stand out among Britpop. I do see how Angels was the most popular single off this since it could almost pass for an Oasis track.
It's just okay. Pretty grungy rock sound that doesn't change much track to track
Big improvement from their other albums. It's half because the composition is a lot tighter and lets the drums out when it's supposed to be heard compared to Tommy and The Who Sell Out having it sort-of-but-not-really-there. The other half because it's half as long. Favourite track: Won't Get Fooled Again
Can't say for sure if "best live album ever" really applies, but it's got some real nice live sounds.
Not really sure why this one is on here in addition to Machine Head, which I had to give a listen over early to make sure I wasn't missing something. The sound is great, but it is on Machine Head. Smoke on the Water is my favourite track on here, as it will be on Machine Head.
It's kind of confused but I like the spirit. The singles and features really stick out like a sore thumb compared to the rest, for better or worse. Favourite track: Beautiful
Kind of samey but it's a good sound so I don't mind all that much. We Got The Beat and Our Lips Are Sealed are the singles, I assume, and they're definitely the most focused tracks on the album.
Cohesive album that keeps a good time and the lyrics are pretty dreamy too. The tracks don't do much for me on their own though, Live Forever was the only track I listened to beforehand and likely the only one I'll listen to after.
Buffalo Stance and Inna City Mamma have some real fun beats. Lyrics make me a little sad cause not much has changed in the 30+ years since some of the calls to action in The Next Generation.
Doesn't really reach the heights of Thriller but the good stuff on here is undeniably good. Smooth Criminal is the hit by a mile of course, but Liberian Girl was an unexpected hit for me.
It's perhaps a little disappointing to me that they created an album that sounds like this and disavowed it in favour of producing Tommy and The Who Sell Out. There's something real special here and everyone knows it now.
Favourite track: The Good's Gone
Vocals don't always do it for me but the composition is very interesting and there's no dull moments. Favourite track: Warning Sign
Pretty nice overall, hits the bar I'm expecting from Rush, but I'm sort of underwhelmed by the opening track despite its length (and probably because of its inspirations). Favourite track: A Passage to Bangkok
