Overall I liked this album save for the second song having the F-slur in it. Not my cup of tea. In terms of just general music however, pretty good!
Blister in the Sun is just so iconic - a staple of every indie 2000's movie. Overall the album had a range of songs that I thought were well written and songs that sounded like they were the ramblings of a very drunk and/or unwell man.
I already know this is a 5/5 album. Seeing them in concert was incredible and it was basically this album lol. Also bonus, served as a good reminder to give my friend Jenny a call.
I think is a very lyrically strong album and it has an incredible narrative that is seen throughout every song. It is a very strong collection that is very indicative of the artist's music and perspective. It ~feels~ like the moment in time the album was released.
Funky. I'd describe this as an album that I'd put on during a party if I wanted something that was chill but upbeat; something that's background but if you focus in on it you'd find it interesting. It's soundtrack music for a movie with a funk scene. It's grooving music with sounds and lyrics that have a rhythm that makes you bob your head but it's not really saying anything. I think it's a Classic example of funk, a true staple. Not that i've listened to a lot of funk. This is the funk that funks when I think of funky funk.
Some songs are total 5/5 and other songs are 1/5. We're meeting in the middle with 3 stars. I think the narrative quality of this album is stellar. The journey that the listener go on is still relevant to this day and the lyrics are quite powerful.
Overall pretty slow and boring? I see the atmospheric influences that really impacted the indie rock/folk scene of the 2010's but overall it's fairly simplistic and basic. Definitely an album I'd put on to fall asleep to.
honestly some of the best hip hop i've heard in awhile. It feels very international despite being in french.
"Selfish" is so good
"101 FM" has such a good beat and riff
I think this is probably my new fave rap/hiphop album. The message is so powerful, the word play is excellent and they're catchy songs. I would recommend this album to any one
Moon Raga is not my jam. Sounds like elaborate farts made by someone who inhaled a lot of helium
Vibes - just vibes on vibes on vibes on vibes. Impeccable
this album is weirdly quirky? it has a playfulness that makes things light while also have a LOT of layers musically. I'd use this for a movie soundtrack.
I thought this album was initially a 4 star but it's really a 5 star.
Some songs are fantastic and are great architypes of pop songs but other songs seem forgettable. The inconsistency of the overall album is disappointing but when a song is fantastic, it is truly fantastic. I would highly recommend parts and pieces but not the whole body of work.
i like some songs. I think that's general trend for me but other songs are really not my cup of tea. The songs I like the best are the ones that sound like cute video game background music. the songs I like the least are the ones that have vocals
a truly iconic album - the vibe : immaculate
i remember my dad playing the album while cleaning the house. This is a very childhood centric sound to me. Not sure if that makes the album good or bad but it definitely alters my rating.
Each song is fantastic - unique and standalone but collectively make the overall sound of the album stand out as a fantastic showcase of the genre "dessert blues". This album feels very distinct to Mali and the Sahara dessert but the music could match the feel of the SW US, western China or even Antarctica. Just a great album
I understand how this album is impactful to the overall history of rap and hiphop - it just really was not for me. Some of the lines and aspects of the songs really really slapped but the overall album was a struggle for me to get through. I had to really try and stomach it.
It is possible that within the context that this album was released, I would have a completely different mindset and I can acknowledge that. Today however, it feels dated, regressive and there's just so much better rap out there currently.
a tuff album. maybe i wasn't in the right head space but i think it's more likely that this album just wasn't for me
this album has the misfortune of being over 2 hours long and only having 1 song that's decent.
It's a pretty nice jazz album.
Definitely a saturday morning album my dad cleaned the house to. Sounded like a very classic rock album and I don't know if the riffs are original to this album and therefore iconic or if the band took all the iconic riffs and combined them into one album
The pressure to like Frank Ocean made me really listen to this album to see if I like Frank Ocean and I feel like a heathen for admitting that I don't particularly care for Frank Ocean.
I just like how theatrical Meat Loaf is in his music. Politics aside, there's just good flair.
Kinda disappointed by this album. Thought i'd like it more.
There is a lot of sadness in this album. Album's only 47 minutes but it felt MUCH longer. Realized that the last song is 10 minutes long - that probably slowed things down A LOT
I liked it, but i don't think it's necessarily something to seek out for good listening
pretty standard rock album. bet this blew people's minds back in the 70's
DNF - don't think this one is for me. It's hard to take this album serious because it dated so poorly. "i'm the illest"??? ik it's the slang of the era but this just isn't for me and that's okay!
It's an okay album. I'm not a fan of the vocals for the Pixies so I'm not surprised that I also don't care for the vocals here. Some songs are more approachable, other songs are unnecessary. Really don't think the album needed to be over an hour
A pretty solid rock album. Better than most, not as good as some.
It's really a 3.5 but I rounded up.
Feels highly experimental. The instrumental really shines compared to the lyrical work. The vocals and lyrics are loose and hard to follow - more poetry but not good poetry. The melody and beats however are consistent, steady and pleasant. It's a 4.5 so i'm rounding up
this album is uh...pretty weird. experimental? iconic? an artistic outlet of personal expression? this album is notable in what it is but it is not for me.
The doors clearly have a vibe and sometimes it's great and sometimes it's not and overall just makes them feel very average i suppose. It's not bad it's not great, it's decent clean music that matches with my black coffee, used vintage clothes, book reading lifestyle.
wildly angsty and SO of its era.
Ex-Factor is stunning, absolutely masterful
Was originally a 4 star album but then i remembered that Nightswimming is on this album so that alone makes it a 5 star album. idk i don't make the rules
i described this as british hip hop with noises and sounds and that might not be accurate but that's how it sounds to me. Needless to say, not for me.
I'm giving this album a 2 because it does do a great job of creating a "sonic landscape" which is apparently the goal. It does not make sense to me. The techno part works, the classical indian part works, I do not like them together. I think they could work together, I just don't think this is the premier example of this type of music.
What a great english rock album, felt very authentic and raw in a way that was very enjoyable to listen to
At best I can describe this as scatter jazz. Occasionally there's a riff here and there that can spark a dollop of joy and hope that maybe the album would change its course. Needless to say, once the final song "Free at Last" came on, I felt that.
I've listened to Bjork's newer stuff and I was curious to hear her older stuff. I was disappointed by the apparent lack of musical evolution. I am definitely not a fan
The first song is of course, an actual banger. The rest is pretty mid
Was going to give this a 4 but upon reflection this is a 5/5 album. The range is incredible, the music is representative of Janelle Monae as an artist. Additionally if I find myself adding every other song to a playlist so I can keep listening to her music, that's a good sign
This album was stellar right up until the last song when it lost me. That's okay, still a funky fresh album, would recommend and enjoy in the future. A solid 3.5 but rounding down to 3 for the last song.
i feel like every movie and tv show from 1998 to 2006 used one of these songs in their soundtrack. I called this derivative because it felt like a formulaic album for music of this era but I guess it's famous bc it's the first? Or at least the most mainstream? Feels like accessible 90's rock. Anyways, it's good and I can't argue with it - just in hindsight it's overrated.
I think I was listening to this song with the wrong weather - not ideal for stormy rainy days, but overall decent as a rock album. Good soundtrack to Get Shit Done to.
DNF - really not for me and way too long thus creating for a grueling experience that i don't ever want to repeat. First 30 seconds of a song would be great and then it would just keep going? Like just don't do that? Please?
