I was expecting a punk album, but got something with more funk in it. Loved the attitude coming through each song. The rhythms were always unexpected. Don’t think I’ve ever heard skewer rhymed with sewer before but first for everything.
Sounded like a voguing soundtrack with a guy talking over it. Danced while making soup
What a near perfect album. Most songs are about being cheated on. What makes this stand out is you get the person who cheated on you to sing back-up
Wow, I’ve never listened to a CCR album all the way through before. The music was so raw and folksy. Can’t understand any of the lyrics though haha
“There’s a bathroom on the right”
While fun, this album felt dated. The beats were exciting and the synths were innovative and experimental. However, the lyrics were relatively bland and were sung or chanted in that 80s hip-hop style that’ll make you feel older than that bottle of Tylenol in your grandma’s pantry. If you feel nostalgic and can still bust a move to this album, more power to ya.
Also, thought I heard “Renegades of Funk” sounded familiar and found Rage Against the Machine’s cover. Needless to say, if you want to jam to this song while sounding remotely “cool” go for the RATM version.
This album felt stylistically all over the place. I enjoyed some tracks but felt out of the loop on others. Some really good raps from others featured on some songs as well.
If there was any questions about your grandparents’ sex drive, let this album put them to rest. The pheromones are fuming from my speakers. Love this album. It’s smooth, you can sing and dance to it, and you don’t really want to play it around your parents… Unless you’re Oedipus, I guess.
Weirdly sexual and violent at a lot of random moments, but still very catchy. I’d probably listen to some songs again. Very long album to listen all the way through though.
I don’t know why I haven’t given RHCP’s a serious listen before. Maybe I’ve heard too many parodies of their sound. They really rock. The bass grooves especially stand out. The lyrics felt like they came from lived experiences of California living including the darker sides of crushed dreams.
Super funky. Excellent grooves. Did not expect the n-word so prominently featured. Everyone was hitting their part just right. Impressed by the rhythm and grooves. Some of the choruses got repetitive after a while.
Was unfamiliar with Q-Tip’s work and read that he was part of a Tribe Called Quest. Beats were tightly mixed and rapping was impressive at times. This album was good beginning to end.
Honestly, I am not that into rap music. Some of the rap suggestions we’ve gotten, I can see why they are interesting, musically experimental, or relevant to some part of music history. But this one seemed mean-spirited and self-referential to the point that I didn’t know what they were talking about. Not to mention they each track sounded the same. It’s also so misogynistic(I guess as a given), that I can’t even tolerate much more.
Honestly a very chilling and breathtaking album. Quite a relief after the last few I’ve been suggested. Lyrically wry as it comments on British culture that a lot of early Gen X could relate to. Reminded me of raw teenage angst being sorted out.
Another breath of fresh air. Played like a run of the mill Indie album for most songs though. Some reflective acoustics, some rocking bangers, a few hooks, etc. but then that Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) was like dropping Royal Albert Hall on a mundane city street. Simply great. Outshone everything else lol.
Way too violent in the lyrics for my taste, but I like the instrumentals. Dark imagery throughout all of the ballads and some imaginative ways for folks to die. But all in all not a whole lot to appeal to me.
Just some chill wavy beats. The lead singer croons softly, almost inaudibly over the synths. Highly listenable without demanding any attention to itself. Good background music, but not much to shake a stick at.
Cool songs and some interesting sounds were used, but all in all unremarkable. I doubt I had to hear this before I die.
This one surprised me in how much I liked it. While I’ve heard snippets in the past, what caught me off-guard was how right every musical moment was. Each beat and mix elevated the rapping and vice-versa. The content of course is too druggy, violent, and misogynistic for me to take seriously. In fact, I took none of it seriously and that’s what made it work for me. If you treat this whole album as self-parody, teens having fun with no real world experience, then it makes the musical ingenuity shine through the objectionable content.
I like the Police’s sound for like a song or two, but this was just too much for me. The first couple tracks were great. Message in a bottle is a classic and the second track got really good. After a while though it turns into more of the same for me. Caterwauling singing with syncopated guitar riffs all day long.
A beautiful escape. Loved every moment.
A bit too much of a dad rock band for me. Not a whole lot going on. Maybe fun to listen to, but pretty forgettable. I don’t plan to revisit this album.
Plenty of teenage angst to fuel this album. Reminds me of the Clash at moments, but certainly less sophisticated. Still the English atmospheres and skewering 1970s British culture will always be my jam.
Wow. Kate bush can both make the poppiest and weirdest music depending on her whims. It’s quite bewitching and I’m along for the ride.
One star. Where’s “My Girl?”
lol really this was unexpected. I think that classic Motown sound when I think the Temptations and its cool to see them break beyond that mold into new styles. Here they tried quick pop ballads, grandiose orchestra pieces, and a funky jam of “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” that seemed to never end (not that I’m planning to leave the dance floor). All in all, unexpected and well executed ideas
Fantastic. Curtis Mayfield is a guitar god, songwriting genius with the voice of an angel. A very horny angel, but still. Couldn’t have been better done and really built the world for the Super Fly movie. This music builds atmosphere, enhances story, and augments the action. Can’t get enough of it.
Ooooh this is what country music’s all about. Just some ballads, lonely hearts, outlaw energy, and probs drunk.
Was expecting musique a la crêpe and ended up with fajita fiesta. Still listenable and will play during my next taco night. But not a whole lot of variation between songs. All in all good for a theme, but felt repetitive.
Few albums catch me so off guard that I go “wow!” But this was one of them. Every song hit the right notes. I was impressed and amazed throughout.
Initially I was like, am I going to give to 5 stars in a row. But then I was like, why not. This album was amazing and I loved every moment of it. It was one of the few albums we’ve listened to that she found listenable.
Not to mention that this sent me down a Wikipedia hole on Fela Kuti. I’m a huge sucker for politically provocative musicians. Stick it to the man!
Sad songs and a golden voice. What more can you ask from George Jones. Felt like all of these songs fit in the background of some movie. The old gun at the bar, nursing his old sorrows; maybe lost love; who cares. To quote Nicole Kidman, “Heartbreak feels good in a place like this.”
You’re right, Lenny. I do want it darker. Thank you for delivering. Not too dramatic, understated vocal and instrumental delivery. Symbolic lyrics that leave room for interpretation and a deep bass voice tickles the right part of my brain.
Great combo of coffee house jazz and 80s pop. Theres something for everyone. Want piano instrumentals? They’ve got it. Wanna dance in a club? Sure you can. Like random rapping. ..uh you do you, I guess. Honestly each song was perfect. Couldn’t ask for more.
Excellent New Wave music. I like punk, I like to dance, and this album is a perfect mesh. The guitars are distorted and the singing is raw. Drums though are having a vibe.
What a wild ride. I hadn’t listen to pretty much any Courtney Love before and this album rocks pretty hard. Just not 100% my vibe.
The sounds and effects used on this album were cool. Not really something I can see myself listening to outside of an art museum though. As an album it was fine
Revisiting high school Billy’s prog phase is nostalgic and cringe. The drums are amazing and the guitar and bass playing is good. Love all in all the song structures. But man the lyrics are kinda bleh. “His mind is not for rent/ to any god or government” Me having just read the Fountainhead at 15 thought I could base a whole life philosophy off of this stuff. Loses a star for lack of subtlety
Your dad’s favorite rock music. Very solid work. Forgot how casually the f-slur is thrown around “Money for Nothing.”
Used to play this album on repeat in high school. Now I’m thinking it’s lopsided, way too creepy, and a smidge too long. First half is an ugly mess, but the whole second half of the album is near perfect.

I have never felt more meh for an album before. Every song seemed to have a good motif, but then they didn’t do anything with it. Everything felt repetitive and constrained.

I’m realizing that my problem with even good rap music is that I like the songs sampled. Lyrics are almost always uninspired overtop of a really beautiful or classic tune. I’d go for just a remix of the songs I like rather than this.

Rest in peace, Dolly. This album has 3 of my favorite female songwriters melding together perfectly. On their own they are so distinct and hear they come together to make pure and sappy country music. Dang near perfect.

First bit was not my style. Rap and then punk. “Sabotage” I could get behind. When they switched to mostly instrumentals I was way mor on board. Highly enjoyable without all the cheeky rapping.
Been too long since I immersed myself in some Neil Young. This album was all over the place in a good way.
Best to listen to with headphones that can be promptly put aside.
This was terrible! Not only did it start with a coitus skit, but then Dr. O had the gall to put another one in the middle. I’ve wondered what it’d take for me to give one of these albums a 1 star. I thought it might be if they personally told me to go fuck myself with a backbeat of fart noises. Turns out this album was basically that experience.
Another Neil Young day. I loved the longer jams on this one. Most songs were 40-60% guitar solos, but in a good way. Excellent
Was pretty typical EDM fare until we got to “Groove is in the Heart”. That launched me into an ethereal plane where my name, my body, my being, and essence all faded into cosmic energy. Something close to nirvana or moksha. 🪷
Then we went back to chill jams. All in all, not a bad album. Would listen again.
One of my favorite albums, one of my favorite bands, and I personally consider the Weight to be the best song of all time. There seems something raw about these songs on this album. They feel freshly formed. It’s only later on like The Last Waltz do they seem fully mature and confident. The beauty of these songs shine through like gems though. Can’t ever get enough.
I was not expecting that. I was about to tick this up as a one-trick pony show. But then “One” came on. I wanted to cry and punch holes in the wall at the same time. Reading the lyrics, I’m almost certain that they’re referencing Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo (great novel). I then took a closer listen to what Metallica was doing musically and lyrically. Ya know, I can really appreciate the technical skill and creativity behind this.
High school me would’ve been all over this half-baked garage band. But now I’m like, meh. Not much to shake a stick at. Fine background music.
What an absolute creep. However, this album is great. The bounce off the walls craziness of early rock n roll, with some impressive piano riffs. The whole backing band is on point too. Still lose a star for being a creep.
Fascinatingly different album. Weird structure, but feels like an artefact from 2020. Puts me back in the space of pandemic anxiety and praxis in radical politics. Now what’s being called “Woke 1” was a real moment of no-bad-ideas-in-a-brainstorm type of art, media, and debate. That being said, the moments on this record, while musically interesting, are hard to differentiate the authenticity/performative dilemma of that era.
Very good at capturing the moment, but feels dated 6 years later.
I’m a sucker for a good Blues album. As I shared with Luke, “Muddy Waters invented electricity.” I could listen to this stuff all day. Even more fun to play on guitar.
Well this just hit all the right notes for me. Guitars and other instruments had the right sound quality and rhythmic groove to get lost in. Lyrics were a bit nonsense, but sure my baby has a cross eyed cat or whatever. That’s all the blues, man!
Will be exploring more of Muddy Waters repertoire.
Give me my sad boy country music any day. What’s good/bad about this particular album is it is an over an hour long. Plenty of time to ruminate on my mistakes: past, current, and future. Maybe not the most musically exploratory, but plenty of space to chew on some thoughts.
Took it slow and gave space for these beautiful songs. Some covers and some originals. I was surprised how they could put their own spin on classics like “Midnight” and “I’m so Lonesome.” There seems to be wearied angst that comes off more mature than their band name lets on. All in all impressed even if it was a little too quiet for repeat listening. I agree that this is a good album to fall asleep too.
I am a bit of a sucker for these prog experiments. I know they sound terrible, I know what they created can be recreated even better today, but man I’m a sucker for some analog funkiness that sounds like you are playing a classical music score following jazz improv structure while using rock (or just) wrong instruments. It tickles my ears in a good way.
I didn’t realize how much of what I think of when I think “Classic Rock” is just T. Rex. They sound like a backing track for all of the rock legends without actually taking on those larger than life personas. The chameleon effect worked.
Also, if you’ve seen Billy Elliot, Cosmic Dancer starts off that movie on a sincere note that blends into the setting. Whole lot to love with this album.
