Album Summary

The Doors is the debut studio album by American rock band the Doors. Recorded at Sunset Sound Recorders, Hollywood, California, it was produced by Paul A. Rothchild and released on January 4, 1967. Since its release, the record has been often regarded as one of the greatest debut albums of all time, by both music critics and publishers. It features the long version of the breakthrough single "Light My Fire" and the lengthy song "The End" with its Oedipal spoken word section. The Doors started recording their debut album under the maintenance of Elektra Records in August 1966. The recording of The Doors established the band's large extensive number of musical influences, such as jazz, classical, blues, pop, R&B and rock music. Its overall presentation has been viewed as an essential part of the psychedelic rock evolution, while it have also been acknowledged as a source of inspiration to other works. Paul McCartney of the Beatles has claimed that following the album's release, he wanted his band to capitalize on the Doors musical style as one of the "alter egos" of the group, for their upcoming album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Doors and "Light My Fire" have been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2015 the Library of Congress selected The Doors for inclusion in the National Recording Registry based on its cultural, artistic or historical significance. The Doors remains the band's best-selling studio album, with sales of over 13 million copies, as of 2015.

“Hey uh, were ya gonna check out the sand bar while you're down there?" "Uh, what's the Sand Bar?" "Ah, it's a place that lets 16-year-old kids drink." "Ah, cool." "Ya hey, guess who's gonna be there?" "Uh, who?" "My favorite cover band, Crystal Shit." "Wow." "Yeah, they do a Doors show, you'd be really impressed, in fact, it goes a little like this:

I’ve always enjoyed The Doors. Not much more to say! Easy to listen to.

Its taken this project to make me listen to them properly. Turns out I like their music and not the singing.

Why’d they make his face so big? The keyboard game is strong with this one! Likes: Break on Through; Soul Kitchen; The Crystal Ship; Light My Fire

Well this was better than the other two doors albums I’ve suffered through but that’s not saying much. More like the dorks amirite lol.

Insanely passionate and spirited vocal performances. Jim Morrison had a voice like no other in music. The band also deserves their flowers, they were on fire.

Done with people pretending this was good.

it's very good

okay, pretty good, the ending is a little ass

no didn’t like

Sublime rock album. One of the best.

my god - what a debut.

Very important and great album. Could do without the 10 minute outro though. I didn’t like it as much as LA Woman

Plutôt bon mais pas vraiment mon style. DNF

It has been far too long since I have checked out The Doors' absolutely stellar debut album. Say what you want about this band but they very much are one of the best bands of all time and I will not be hearing any shit about this band being "lazy and redundant" because that is simply not true. It is crazy just how hard this album hits over 55 years later, the energy truly never dies when it comes to this album. The lyrics are so catchy thanks in part to Jim Morrison's oozing charisma that still can charm anyone up all these years later. Even the lesser known tracks like End of the Night, Twentieth Century Fox, and I Looked At You all go so hard and really help carry this album's highly respected legacy from front to back. Of course if I am talking about this album I have to give a bit of time to talking about one of the greatest long songs ever, The End. There is truly something so melancholic yet inspiring about this 11 minute odyssey as it slowly morphs and changes over the course of the runtime into something completely different than when it all started. Hearing The End for the first time will truly change a person into someone else by the time the song is done, the fact they were able to make such a minimalistic and explosive song all together AND make the audience sit through such a grueling runtime back in 1967 is beyond me. With all of that being said I want to leave you all on one final note for this review, Soul Kitchen is my favorite Rap Rock song ever

A debut album that deserves all the praise it gets. The album has a raw, underground feel mixed with poetic lyrics. There are elements from rock, blues, jazz. While the songs have different feels/vibes/influences, it all comes together in a cohesive album. An album completely different from the big rock artists in the mid-late 60s.

All songs are good - like the Doors sound

Not taking any perception altering substances but this would be a good album for it if I was. Lots of classic rock songs that border on jamming with how long some of the middle sections get when they dive deeper into the psychedelia. I like that the defining element here was their little tinny electric keyboard with organ filter kicked on, could have been grating but ended up kind of distinct and blends well. Ended up liking it more by the 3rd listen which bumped it a star.

Well, like most I went through my Doors phase. I thought Jim Morrison was a misunderstood genius. I read books about the band, looked for meaning in their music. Truth is in retrospect it was mixed. Some good, some not so much. Morrison was smart, but again not as much as he or anyone thought. He wrote some genuine classics. "Break on Through" has become almost a cliché. Same with "Light My Fire". If you want dark and brooding, there is "The End". Ultimately, The Doors legendary status was cemented as much by Jim Morrisons untimely death as by the music. Would he have faded, or gone on to produce more brilliant songs. We'll never know. For me three songs make this a 5. It is genuinely an album you should listen to before you die, even if it is a bit uneven. 5/5

A classic in its own right. Not my favorite from the doors, but it's got some hits. Can't help but cringe everytime I hear the Alabama Song though... Rating: 7/10 Favorite Song: Break on Through

I've been wanting to listen to this album for a long time now. I only knew the magnificent "The End", and it's still the best song on the album, but damn, everything here is phenomenal. This is genuinely one of the best thing that has blessed by ears.

Now we're fucking talking. What a band.

some lyrics a bit iffy but solid album for its time

Another solid 3 because there are classics here but The Doors don’t really do it for me.

En klassiker. Mye historie og fet musikk

A very cool vibe, and Manzarek's playing is great, but Morrison is a bit much to me at times, and I prefer other albums by The Doors. 4 stars

Much like the Stones or the Velvet Underground, the Doors kind of offered an alternate view of the summer of love. It's darker and weirder than what was happening in 1967. I think it's a super interesting mix of psychedelic rock, blues, cabaret, and non-Western sounds. Covering both Willie Dixon and Brecht/Weill is pretty crazy, and it all works . The hits are great ("Break on Through" and "Light My Fire" are classics for a reason), but the deep cuts are really spectacular here -- "Soul Kitchen", "Crystal Ship", "End of the Night", "I Looked at You", and the epic "The End" are all super rad. 5 stars.

One of the greatest debut albums of all time, from America’s greatest band. Jim Morrison is golden god.

אלבום מופת, שילוב בין רוק איכותי לשלישיית גשר הירקון

No introduction necessary. An all time psych masterpiece. (Listened to it on vinyl)

I liked it. Not quite as good as Waiting for the Sun, but a great debut.

I was never really a Doors guy.

Jim Morrison gives Charles Manson vibes

Back door man! overall album spoiled by the bontempi they should have brought him in let him do his iconic bit at the beginning of Light my fire, then sent him home. It was annoying to the nth degree.

I've never really got into The Doors. They're good, they have the odd absolutely brilliant song, this is fantastic as debuts go, but I never want to hear more than one song at a time. When it's good it's good, but it's equally annoying because of the organ thing.

Loved this when I was younger, light my fire is still a banger

Rockete - helt decent

yahoooo!!!! i liked this one a whole lot!!!

Incredible debut and staple of the 60s. Sets the template for the poet rockstar and 60s rock

Yeah they were pretty damn good the doors weren’t they? Some of their biggest hits here on this record. 4.0/5.0 Best Song: Break On Through

Really phenomenal stuff, pretty much an album with no skips tbf. I think i forget how good the doors were a lot

I used to think this record was corny, and gets by on the “cool” factor of Morrison’s baritone voice and lounge lizard vibe. Listening in this context I do have an appreciation for it considering it came out in 1967. It stands out a lot compared to other major records of the time and I can imagine how wild it must have been to see their shows.

This was a fun album! Great performance by the band overall - everything felt very cohesive.

Most of these songs live in my head for free.

Heard before?:✔️ Will listen again?:✔️

1 of the earliest LPs on the book / project this 1967 debut LP is way ahead of its time. I dont think this has dated, i love everything about this. Love the keyboards. I know this well, i was quite obsessed with the Doors for a while. It's wild powerful trippy hypnotic dangerous music slightly out of kilter, you could lose yourself to this. Light My Fire is 7 minutes long & turns into a jam. Rhythm section from the left speaker lead guitar & synth from the right, love that 2 channel stereo effect.Such a strong confident voice with gravitas & a roar but the band are brilliant too. Would have been amazing live.

Интересный альбом, определенно стоит еще раз послушать "The End" - лучший трек (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_9ffIOMaLA)

Yeah it's good. Heard many a time.

Break On Through - 10/10. Straight fire. Amazing, tight playing. Killer track. No notes. Soul Kitchen - 10/10. That late 60s Hammond organ is perfect for this style. Another killer. The Crystal Ship - 9/10. Great track. Fits perfectly after the first two. Twentieth Century Fox - 9/10. Another total banger. Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) - 9/10. Ordinarily, I would complain about the tinny piano, but it fits the rest of the track perfectly. Light My Fire - 11/10. Speechless. This one absolutely goes to 11. Back Door Man - 8/10. Awesome track. I Looked At You - 8/10. More awesomeness. End of the Night - 9/10. Creepy in the fun, Halloween way, as opposed to the "cover your drink" way. Take it as it Comes - 8/10. Great track. The End - 11/10. Complete insanity, but in the best possible way. This doesn't feel like 11 minutes long, but it definitely goes to 11. Overall Rating - 4.64/5 (9.27/10). Absolutely an incredible album from beginning to end. Everything fits, musically, lyrically, and aesthetically. Maybe not the perfect album, but I don't see how The Doors could do any better.

#252 - I always judge how much I like a band by how many songs I could put on a playlist (though the blank CD used to be my barometer). If it was under 10 songs, I was an OK fan, between 11-20 - Fan, and 20+ then big fan. I'd put myself in the Fan range. I could find a good 15+ songs, a few of them on this album. This album was a perfect introduction to the band; the opening track as big a statement as you can make to start. Short, punchy, and showcases the sound all in one 2 min song. The rest of the album follows suit in songs, even the longer ones don't overstay their welcome too long. It is worth the listen for those who might not have really listened to them. It's poetic at its core, but the musicianship is there too. Biggest Hit - Break on Through (To the Other Side) Biggest Miss - Alabama Song (Whisky Bar) Hidden Gem - Twentieth Century Fox

Really enjoyable experience.

Wow. These guys were good. 10/5

Very emblematic of the sixties rock sounds. Got some hazy guitar, electric keyboard, and deep, At time moaning, vocals. Really good.

would’ve preferred if this door stayed closed did every song need organs? …why so many lyrics about little girls? Can we stop please?

no more songs about young girls please

It's the Doors. They have the sound that doesn't make them sound outdated from the late 60s till 2026. We shall see what happens by 2067. Well I assume I will.

Break on through, light my fire, the end, backdoor man, take it as it comes

A great debut album by an innovative band of it's time. An ethereal psychedelic experience blended with the blues.

Iconic but kinda boring

The Doors have great hits but they're also very mid. Unlike many other groups from their era, they don't appear to have influenced anyone except for maybe Glen Danzig. Things I like more than The Doors' music: the Oliver Stone movie about The Doors, and the Bruce McCullough bit about The Doors. (This is getting bumped up from a two because the full version of Light My Fire fucking rules.)

Just scrapped my initial review after listening for possibly the sixth time since getting this album on this journey! Superb guitars and a massive horn! I’ve tried to find fault and although some of the songs feel weaker than others in ‘twentieth century fox’ ‘end of the night’ and ‘take it as it comes’ and I actually don’t like one at all in ‘the crystal ship’ - my worst track. The rest of the album is just a joy to listen to, there’s some stonking massive hits on this album, arguments for almost every track to be my favourite other than the one I despise. For me though I’m going to go with my best track as ‘Alabama song (Whiskey bar)’ I have listened to it so many times this week it’s unreal. I absolutely love it and despite there being bigger better sounding and produced tracks this is my favourite! The rest of the album could well have been a greatest hits I enjoyed it that much. 9/10 due to the weaker tracks but will get many more listens!

The Doors - The Doors All about the organ and guitar for me. When they shine and go off on one, the whole album lifts. And it is so clean. No effects of the time. No distortion; no phasing; no wah-wah. Just the songs, and the music. So the opener, LMF and the End and the notable tracks, and deservedly so. Soul Kitchen, The End of The Night, Take it As it Comes all are pretty good too. But the rest is just filler of the time. And I don't buy into the whole Jim Morrison mystic Lizard King nonsense. Probably a good way to pull girls though. Best Track - Break on Through Worst Track - Twentieth Century Fox 7.5/10

When the church ORGANS get the rock and roll treatment 😩. Other than some standout tracks like "Break On Through...", "Light My Fire", "The End". The organs just make it all sound similar (3.5).

Not that you’re reading my other reviews, but you already know. This is a 5-star, seminal rock n’ roll album. The mystique around them, their place in rock history, is inarguable, in my opinion. How many college kids over the decades have sat around and listened, rapt, to Jim’s poetry? Two of the great songs - the opener - the first song on their first album, mind you - ‘Break on Through’, and ‘Light My Fire’. Tough to top. Even if one of those was on their debut album, it would be impressive. And the epic closer, ‘The End’. Well, fitting, to say the least.

I like music from the 60s, but I feel like The Doors was pretentious garbage even for the 60s. People only say they like it because this album has been played ad nauseam.

This was a good album to get in October cuz it’s the only time I enjoy the sound of The Doors.

I’ve pretty much avoided The Doors for years because it was overplayed and always felt like a part of 60’s music I hated. It’s a fine album. The End sucks though.

Grande álbum, especialmente considerando que é o primeiro deles

I don't know when I found this album, but I know it was early because it seems like I have always liked it. Some time in my early teens, probably. I liked it immediately, and my appreciation for it has only grown in the last 30ish years. It has been in my collection since I was a teenager, I think. A long time, anyway It's wild to me that a 3 piece band is making this kind of sound. This album receives my highest award: listening twice in a row. Unfortunately, work got in the way and I couldn't finish the second pass. I definitely will this week, however ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Not the biggest fan, a bit toooo alternative for me but had some nice bits to em

I can totally understand just how this has influenced modern music (particularly music I love). I couldn't help but think that the album has an oddly shrek-ish vibe. The last song is too long and I just don't think this is anything special but maybe that's simply how I interpret all music from the 60s.

Not a doors guy I find it insufferable sometimes and pretty cool at others.

Stunning debut.

This was less annoying than some Doors albums, but Alabama Song is peak bad Doors.

The height of Psychedelic blues rock, with fascinating chord developments in The Crystal Ship and playful creepiness in Alabama Song alongside the massively played Light My Fire, Break On Through and the helicopter song at The End. Not so keen on the more overt blues of Back Door Man, and some of the later songs are more forgettable, but it's still a comfortable 4 stars.

Great album. There are a couple of skips though in my humble opinion. And it hasn’t aged the best. But overall I did enjoy it. 4/5

can't imagine listening to this when it came out. will never get over that organ

I could say a lot of positive things about this album, but it's probably all been said before, which is fine, I guess. Instead, I will focus on the missed opportunity. This could be the perfect last album to listen to on this list. It's iconic and full of hits, but think about it: You've been trudging your way through this list for a couple years and you have one final album and it's this gem and the song, The End, plays at the very end of it all. "This is the end, my only friend, the end." I would shit myself, it would just be so damn perfect. "Oh, you know why"

Another Doors album that has followed me around since I was 19, another 5. Even though some of the lyrics haven’t aged well at all… favourite track probably The Crystal Ship.

Riktigt bra. Light my fire, The End, Break on through och the crystal ship är klass

Best thing about it was the vocal sometimes sounds like Franz Ferdinand. So much bloody organ and terrible / easy lyrics. One songs lyrics sounded like he was a peado. Not a fan of the album but have heard other songs by them I liked

Colossal. When I discovered The Doors in the 90s as a teenager it was life-changing. I don't know how many times I watched the VHS of the Val Kilmer movie. I bought all the albums, and this is an epic first album. A flamenco guitarist, jazz drummer and then Manzarek and Morrison, who redefined acid rock on darker terms. There isn't a bad track on this album. And more than anything, it's such a consistent sound. Their first three albums are all fives for me, then it gets a little shakier. But this one is flawless. 5/5

What an absolute GOAT. So many haunting classics on a single album. I haven't listened to them in years but could sing along to every word. I was totally swept away by the music and vocals.

Always resisted the Doors on the basis every student had the poster and felt like it was all about the legend of the group rather than the music, but really rated this

I love the hokey pokey sound of Alabama Song, reminds me of La Cigarette - Babylon Circus

This album had some bangers, but it also had a lot of forgettable songs. I love Light my Fire and it's 10 minute keyboard solo, but some of the other songs just didn't really stick with me. I know the Doors are a classic, and I respect them and do love their sound at times, but overall I think the album was just "pretty good." I might need to re-listen to it sometime and give it my full attention. I did, admittedly, listen to much of this while I was at work and doing other tasks, so this review is subject to change.

Not entirely sure we needed a 5 minute long keyboard/guitar solo, but them the doors baybee

"light my fire" should not be seven minutes long. a banger otherwise though

One of the most overrated bands in rock and roll history. It’s not even a competition.

Actually, quite solid and enjoyable.

I enjoyed this band's gloomy and atmospheric sound, yet couldn't help but be a little disappointed by the project's failure to strike an equal balance between fostering this and distinguishing each song. I was reminded of some Velvet Underground projects, but unlike the Velvet Underground, nothing within this album stood out or was particularly exceptional to me. My favourite track was probably 'Light my Fire' (which Stevie Wonder does an excellent cover of by the way) and my least favourite was 'Alabama Song' which I found extremely creepy. Otherwise, this was a chill listen overall, but nothing too special or groundbreaking.

pick: Soul Kitchen, Light My Fire, The End

The fact this is a debut album in insane!

Released in 1967. Living fast and dying young still has a mystique about it. Jim Morrison certainly embodies this. Extended version of "Light my Fire" on the album not the shorter singles version. Morrison has an immediately recognisable voice. Interesting lyrics and musically interesting also. Prob 4 1/2 for me but feeling generous today. "The End" as the last track is too long and have criticised this on other albums, am I getting used to/accepting of this now? It is an album after all, that's what we're here for.

Nope, don't love it.
