When I saw the Spotify profile picture of Spiritualized - I was like wait a second, that looks like the motherfucker from the Verve - Richard Ashcroft. Is this like a Verve side project? Kill me. Start reading the Wikipedia: nope that's Jason Pierce aka J. Spaceman (okay, dude). Well at least not a Verve side project, let's give it a go. Read some more: to form Spiritualized, Spaceman kicked his longtime friend out the band, and brought in his girlfriend Kate Radley to play the keys. Is there anything less rockstar than that? Hey guys, Evan is out and my girlfriend is in. Read some more: this album was recorded shortly after Kate and Spaceman broke up. BUT the same year that they broke up, Kate SECRETLY MARRIED - and is still married to - RICHARD ASHCROFT. How funny would it be if this generator was secretly made by Richard Ashcroft, and every album was somehow loosely connected to him? Ashcroft and Fela Kuti were actually college roommates.

Moving Pictures by Rush

Obligatory slap-a-the-bass-mon. I didn’t come into this with any super strong feelings on Rush. Have always been prog rock curious, and like that Rush seems a little goofy too, and excellent musicians. This album has all of the Rush songs I know. Limelight is always my favorite, but liked Camera Eye as a new one to me. Vital Signs was the only dud. Was honestly surprised by how short these songs were for the gods of prog - packed a punch.

The Modern Dance by Pere Ubu

This was weird and fun. Don’t even recognize the name of this band. Contemporary with punk, but ahead of their time - sounds more post punk like Talking Heads, early Modest Mouse, or, more modern, Parquet Courts. I love this stuff. Clean guitars, bass high in the mix. Messy and noisy, but finds a way to keep the wheels on - until the last few songs I suppose. Maybe a little too arty for me to return to super regularly or to play around the house, but it was great for a couple of spins with headphones on. Highlights for me are Chinese Radiation, Street Waves, and Over My Head. Great as a complete album piece. Also, newcomer Frank 2/Fascist Frank found this amazing rule book the band/collective wrote: https://www.ubuprojex.com/facts/uburules.html

The Band by The Band

An all-time great (North) American band. I've only known Band greatest hits, not this full album. Apart from the classics, loved Jemina Surrender, Jawbone, and King Harvest. The ballads don't hit quite as hard as say a CSNY slow jam, but gotta give these guys a top rating as one of the best bands to ever do it. Also love the cockiness and simplicity of their name, like a New Yorker insisting that anyone in the world should know what they mean when they say "The City".

Foundational band for a lot of other stuff I like today. Have listened to a lot of their other albums. Most of these songs were super solid, I just think I prefer them in slightly smaller doses. Love the A side. Stars for Morrissey’s growling on track one. Johnny Marr is such a classic rockstar too - impressive range of projects since the Smiths.
