I always thought Elvis Costello was overrated. This album proves it.

Apparently in 1978 you could just record you and your friends at the kitchen table with ambient noise in the background and call it music. This is straight trash and shouldn’t even have been allowed to exist much less allowed on this list.

This reminded me of being at a 60s house party.

I can’t explain why but I’ve never really liked Muse even though it should be something I like because it has all the right elements. Maybe if I had to pinpoint something it’s the fact that the singers voice doesn’t really match the music. Too operatic.

This is kinda like Leonard Cohen where I wanted to hate it but was actually very hypnotic and some of the songs were downright catchy. That being said it was too long and I’ll probably never listen to the whole thing again but I will add a few to my playlist.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and can see how it was influential to bands that came after. They really have a sound that was 10 years ahead of its time

Perfect metal album

I love Waylon’s playing and singing and Billie Joe’s songwriting. There are very few perfect country albums and this is one

Honestly I had my mind prepared for another throbbing gristle like album (if that hasn’t generated for you yet then you’re in for a treat) so was pleasantly surprised by this one. I didn’t mind it but would probably never listen to it again.

My first repeat artist. Hughway 61 revisited was the first which I liked infinitely better. This one was way more bluesy, I didn’t hate it but was not as good as his other albums.

I’ll never understand why people think jazzy stuff like this is genius. Most of the first half was just gibberish and noise

Brian Wilson died yesterday (6/11/25) and then this album pops up. This album is not that bad but it’s not music for me. It’s music for boomers that grew up with The Beach Boys and are nostalgic for that. Some of the songs are catchy but some sound unfinished and silly.

Very experimental, very jazzy, very avant garde. I’m sure this blew peoples minds back in the day. I’m giving it a solid 3 because I respect it and respect Zappa for being different.

Too mellow for me, too easy listening. Im sure in 25 years when I’m an old man I’ll love this album but right now it’s not my thing.

I would have thought there would be a thousand other albums way better than this that could be included in this list. That being said the last four songs were pretty good so it got bumped up a star for that.

The Killers were the best of the early 2000s pop bands. Mr. brightside is doing a lot of heavy lifting here but this album is solid.

What is it with all these mediocre 90s Brit pop bands? Not all these need to be on the list. I just looked it up and the book this list was based on was edited by an English writer so there you go. This album is mid at best. Sounds like something on Christian rock radio.

EVERY BRITISH POP/ROCK BAND DOES NOT NEED TO BE ON THIS LIST. This is all over the place, some songs are punk-ish some are folk, some are jazzy. But in the end it sounds like every other early 2000s hipster band.

Double albums must have been a popular gimmick back in the day. I’m not a big fan of them. I demoted a star based on that fact. This album is good, better than most of the drivel on this list but it still lacks something. I feel like that should have gone bigger with the guitars like they did in pinball wizard.

I wish someone could explain to me the appeal of Elvis Costello. The only thing I can think of is he is a nostalgia act for boomers who were teens in the 50s. He’s a hack who had to copy another man’s style and name to become popular.

I’ve never been a big Radiohead guy so this is the first full album I’ve ever listened to by them. I’m sure three or four of their other albums will be on here so I’ll reserve judgment on them as a whole until then. But this album was just ok, nothing really special about it to me.

There are parts of this that could be cool but in the end it’s all just meh

My metal heart wants to shit on this so bad but there are some bangers in here. The bass is killer.

A little too weird acid 60s for me, kind of like that one Kinks album that was on here. But I do think this was pivotal for them as a band to push the envelope into more heavy, melodic psychedelic music, the Floyd we all know and love

This just sucks. He can’t play piano or guitar, just plays the same few chords and waxes operatic over them with that whiny voice like he’s Thom Yorke or something. This just pissed me off, it isn’t clever or brilliant or artistic, it’s just trash.

I guess I don’t like Radiohead. This is the third album and they’ve all been just meh. Nothing memorable about any of them.

This ranks up there as one of the worst auditory experiences of my life, right behind that time I went on a tour of some caverns in North Carolina and some moron brought their screaming baby along. Trapped in a cave with a screaming baby is how I would describe this sound, or nails on a chalkboard, or worse than 20 9/11s, or its how Hell would sound, but not the cool Hell, the shitty one.

Soundgarden are in my top ten favorite bands. It’s raw, loud, emotional, heavy. Pure rock and roll that would put hair on your chest

Reading about the history of the album and governmental response makes me like it even more. He had to have known this would cause an uproar but he did it anyway, risking his family and friends lives. There’s nothing more punk rock than that.

The title track is the only good song on here. The rest are meh.

A certified classic, although I’m docking it one star due to the skits being absolutely awful. There’s one that sounds like they’re eating, just straight slurping for a good 30 seconds. Also, about 15 mins too long, I thought this album should have ended on Suicidal Thoughts.

The weakest Beatles album is better than most things ever recorded.

Damn near perfect rock album

This is just ok. I usually like the smiths but this album wasn’t hitting for me.

Most of these mid to late 60s British bands had a touch of Monty Python silliness that I’m just not into (re: the Kinks’ stupid slide whistle). This album has a little of that with the last “song.” I also don’t see how Clapton is considered one of the greatest. I could name 10 other blues guitarists that are better. All in all an ok album, a few good tunes a few shitty ones.

I’m not sure what this is. The monotone singing was definitely a choice.

I’ve been on a new wave kick lately so I enjoyed this. A-ha is definitely an underrated band.

I despise this man. His nasally voice, uninspired melodies, repetitive mundane lyrics. It truly is music for the most basic of humans. Elvis Costello didn’t even deserve a career in music much less than six fucking albums on this list.

I enjoyed this a lot actually, my wife would love this album. May add it to the vinyl collection.

How was PJ Harvey not a bigger name back in the day? This was amazing. I had always heard the name but never heard any of their music until now. I always thought they were electronica for some reason so I was pleasantly surprised with this album.

This was pretty groovy but some of the songs were just meh. Rolling stone adds an extra star for me

I don’t know if they ever made a bad song. Just perfect for its time and place.

This was a hard one to rate because there are some classics in there but there’s also some very mediocre rhymes too.

Like 30 minutes too long. Not everything “ethnic” needs to be on this list. I’ve now listened to about 20 African albums and I’m just in the 300s.

Bland, cutesy music for pre-pubescent girls

I really thought this was going to be a lot better than it was considering this was everywhere when I was in high school. But it turns out this is just very basic, Gorillaz are just one hit wonders.

The most cliche band of all time. Just painfully devoid of any originality or artistic talent. Truly the worst band on this list.

Wow this was really toe tapping wasn’t it?? I try to judge the album itself and not the legacy the band has. I acknowledge that Roxy Music influenced a lot of better bands but there’s a reason why Roxy Music isn’t all over the radio. It’s just not good at all. Lyrics are gibberish, melodies are nonexistent, song structure is all over the place. Just terrible.

I acknowledge the talent here but this music isn’t for me. I’ve always hated this stream of consciousness type of songwriting.

Hell god baby damn no!

Kinda Stranger Things vibes at certain points. It would’ve been better if he stayed with the spooky electronica throughout the entire album.

Too mellow of a rap album for me.

It really shows how great Jack White is when he can produce this big of a sound with just him and drums. Loved this album in college and love it now. They’ll be playing Seven Nation Army at sporting events long after we’re dead and gone.

I’m a sucker for this old school hip hop

This was a wild journey. I felt like it was all over the place, some of it was pure 70s pop, some Motown, some electronic weirdness. I feel like if he would have cut out the wacky stuff this would be an all time classic

I consider myself a metal head but I always thought these dudes were posers. That being said there are a few sweet riffs in here.

Definitely a fun album and you can tell they had fun recording it but this is just way too long for my liking. I docked it a star for that reason.

Love this sound and love this band. One of the few making great music during a time of the rise of bubblegum pop and party hip hop
