While I’m familiar with Black Sabbath and have liked the few songs I’ve heard before, this was my first time diving into a full album. Was genuinely surprised at how much I liked this given I usually am not a heavy metal fan. The guitar, drums, and even Ozzy’s voice all sound really good here. As someone who is a big rap fan I was excited to do a full dive into this. It was cool to see how future artists would sample this. The beats, instrumentals, and whole vibe of this album is very fun, but man their rapping style is mainly just yelling which can get old fast. Did I understand what was being said? No. Did that stop me from enjoying this record? Absolutely not! The horns, the keys, the drums, and the vocals all create this fun, engaging, and atmospheric listen. A really good example of music overcoming barriers. The keys, the flutes, Heron’s voice all work so well together to create a cohesive smooth still thematically relevant listen decades after its release. There’s few reasons in my opinion for an album to have a long runtime, and this doesn’t meet those exceptions. The first few songs were actually pretty enjoyable, nothing special, but good background music that blends together, but it starts to take its toll at When the Stars Go Blue. 3rd British pop/rock band in a row, 2nd Beatles album so far. Definitely not The Beatles’ best, some good gems in there but overall, seemingly like most British pop/rock, very basic and middle of the road. Likes: All I’ve Got To Do; All My Loving; Till There Was You; You Really Got A Hold On Me

The more I listened to this, the more it started growing on me. I appreciate the smaller instrumental details and just the genuine quirkiness of it all. Likes: Our Prayer/Gee; Heroes And Villains; Cabin Essence; Surf’s Up; In Blue Hawaii; Good Vibration

As someone who grew up on late 90’s early 2000’s country, this was refreshing. The harmonies and the instrumentals work well together and embody the spirit of country way more than some of the more modern country. A weird, horny, and inconsistent motherfuckin album. Like: Something Wicked This Way Comes; Miles

There’s a lot of fun moments here that really make this an enjoyable experience. But those moments are also brought down by why seems to be some random interludes here and there. Likes: Roundabout; South Side of the Sky; Mood for a Day

I wouldn’t say this was bad, it sounded nice…but wow was this hard to give my full attention to. Likes: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart

3+ hours is a lot. I get that this is supposed to go through the full songbook here, and there’s lots of great songs…but as a whole it can feel like a burden to go through. That being said, Ella has such a beautiful voice and paired with the instrumentals it creates an overall relaxing and enjoyable listen. Likes: there’s 59 songs total…I can’t remember the various likes throughout

To me this is an example of electronic music being repetitive yet unique while not sounding annoying. Plus each song seemed to effortlessly transition from one to the next creating a more cohesive sound. Likes: Since I Left You; Stay Another Season; Electricity; Summer Crane; Live at Dominoes

I think I like Led Zeppelin I more, but this is still a damn good album, especially considering it was released in the same year as LZ I. Some of the instrumentals were nice. But Jah’s voice really rubbed me the wrong way. As a whole this didn’t register with me. Side Note: if you’re going to have a song that’s the same name as the album, it should be one of the better ones in the mix.

I was a little skeptical about this album because (1) I’m not big on double albums and (2) I’ve heard this album can be inconsistent at times. But I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the full project. Disc 1 is a classic Led Zeppelin album, no notes. We get a little more outside of the typical Zeppelin sound on Disc 2, and honestly, I’m so here for it…it’s more mellow, more funky, and more experimental, and more importantly, it somehow works. Maybe drop the last song because it’s creepy, but other than that, great listen. Likes: All of Disc 1; In the Light; Down by the Seaside; Ten Years Gone; Night Flight; The Wanton Song

I recently watched the Amy documentary, and it really adds perspective as to all the shitty things about her life. She was a product of her environment which molded her views on relationships/life which influenced the themes in lots of her songs. Overall, not as much pull as Back to Black, but still a very good listen. Likes: Stronger Than Me; You Sent Me Flying; Fuck Me Pumps; I Heard Love Is Blind; No Greater Love; October Song

I’ve tried to get into Radiohead before with no luck (really just OK Computer), so I was skeptical going into this. Instrumentally this sounds really good. I read a lot about the band and this album after my first listen and learned this is a departure from their typical sound, but this electronic/rock fusion works and creates an almost eerie atmosphere tension. Lyrically I initially struggled here. The few times I listened to Radiohead I didn’t like Yorke’s voice and could barely understand what he was saying. I really immersed myself when listening this time, and the dark cryptic lyrics along with Yorke’s whiny voice compliment the instrumentals really well. Overall I really enjoyed this and am optimistic going into the more “mainstream” Radiohead albums on this list. Here I am again saying I don’t like heavy metal, and yet here I am again saying this is a great Black Sabbath album. Maybe it’s just the loud screamo stuff I hate, but this is really good. The themes, the instrumentals, and the riffs just capture you. Each instrument can be heard and works perfectly together again with Ozzy carrying it on the vocals.
