I AM THE LIZARD KING

groovy! minus one point for creepy lyrics about children

Has a few recognizable songs on it. Not sure I would listen to it on my own. Very 60s stuff

gggggggreat

Good, but not great. Certainly as a first album, its a statement, but I'm prefer their later sound, specifically on LA Woman

Opening so soon after another of their creations this doesn't pack the punch it once may have.

Another good Doors album. I think LA Woman is a bit better, but I still just love their whimsical sound.

Still an absolute banger. No skips. NONE.

The Doors debut album is widely regarded as the best debut album. The album sound is mostly rock, but mixed in it is jazz, blues, pop, classical, and r&b. 'Light My Fire' may be the most popular song on the album, and the band even remixed it for a radio edit because it was so highly requested. In conclusion, this album is a classic piece of rock history and might be the best debut album from any group of musicians.

absolute classic, great songs top to bottom.

One of the stand out examples of the time. Free ranging experimentation.

Cool but not my style, gave it a chance though...

The drive rock with amazing electro-guitar music.

Pretty much what I expected. Solid. Unique. And not my thing.

Some absolute classics there

Not a bad song on the album. 4.25. Songs are memorable, but something about it doesn't inspire relistens. I can't say why. It also feels like it's trying to be "smart" music. Also can't pinpoint why.

Favourite Song: Light My Fire

Cool, groovy, bluesy and interesting

Obviously synonymous with Apocalypse Now due to 'the end' but the whole album shares that same sound of annilhation thanks to Morrison's wild vocals and the whirling arrangements of various electric instruments.

The attribute I like most about Jim Morrison's voice is that you believe every thing he says. Great album.

One of the greatest debut albums ever - I can only imagine how much more I'd enjoy this if I did psychedelics. Morrison's voice is obviously iconic and although I don't know what he's singing about half the time, I'm fully down with the ethereal imagery it creates. It is Manzarek's work on the keys, however, that really helps elevate and define the sound of The Doors here. Best track: The End

What an album. I loved this! I knew of The Doors, but never really listened to them. Some great songs and The End is an absolute study in drug taking. The only dud track for me was Alabama Song where I could almost taste the LSD. Great album and will be revisiting. Love that 60s organ sound as well. Best tracks: Light my Fire & Take It As It Comes.

not their best, but still fucking excellent.

Classic, aber nicht ganz meins.

I think I've listened to this album dozens of times dating back to my college years. Despite my more-diminished opinion of Jim's poetry these days, it still holds up and remains as unique and captivating as I remember. Even the worst songs (e.g., "End of the Night") have their charm. Look at the Ramones' cover of the largely-forgotten "Take it as it Comes"!

Great sound….

Not a big fan. I have liked the singles, but they're much more polished. Ry said it best: Jim Morrison ate quaaludes like they were lucky charms and drank heroin from a fire hose.

2.5. I do really like some of the tracks, I use to love 'break on through' as a kid. But the album as a whole has so many forgettable tracks between the popular ones. And even the famous ones drag on and on with winding aimless solos for 7+ minutes

O album As Portas pela banda As Portas eh tao bom quanto As Janelas

I like the hits on here, and this is probably my favorite Doors album, but I'm not the biggest fan. This is the 3rd Doors album on this list and I kinda hope it's the last.

2nd album I’ve gotten that I’ve heard before but that’s cool. This is a decent album. Preemptively predicting I’ll give it a 4. I think this is a good example possibly. “Break on through” is a classic for a reason. “Light my fire”. Another great song. So far the songs I already loved stand out and the others are... eh not bad not amazing. “The end” is a spectacular song. Great vibe. Also lol at “the west is the best”. It feels like such a weird brag about where Morrison lives in an otherworldly song. I mean I think I get where he’s coming from but looking back at how that movement died out... it’s just pretty silly.

Wow, a bit of a roller coaster, but, like, the wooden kind.

Hot diggedy dawg. Reminds me of a sex-fuelled heart attack I once had.

Little Mark with a C with his flowing hair.

I always lumped The Doors in with Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin as a band I thought were hugely overrated. I might have to reassess that as I really enjoyed this.

Clima bacana. Velharia boa. Melhor música: Break on through

A great album

Easy 5. An epic album

Klasssikkobiisejä ja leppoisaa rokkia. Kyllä tämän voisi laittaa myöhemminkin soimaan ja fiilistellä. Ei ihan ykkössuosikki, mutta selkeä like kuitenkin.

Fantastic music for a fall back to the 60’s. I never listened to them since I was a toddler and marijuana wasn’t legal. I image a psychedelic couch in a smoke filled room with pillows, plants and pot everywhere. They are the grooviest then and now. I’m sure my parents were terrified of them more then Elvis bringing rock and roll to the world. I could do meditation and yoga to this music all day long. Great drummer or should I say Symbolist! Great lyrics and a true opening up to the expanding minds of the 60’s revolutionary times. Don’t know if I would have like this music then but now see the beauty to it in all counts: lyrical, artistic, musical and dimensional. Girl we couldn’t get much higher. Come on baby light my fire. So cool man!

is it's own genre by itself really

All time classic. All killers, no fillers!!

“The Doors” by the Doors (1967) One look at the facial expressions on the album cover suggests to the listener that it’s time to put away the bubble gum. Jim Morrison’s lyrics on this album are of uneven, but mostly high, quality. His metaphors are not cheap, unlike most mid sixties rock songs. They reveal a mature mind working in an under-traveled metier, and the results are arresting. Rock and roll is now demanding to be taken seriously. These are not songs for teenagers, in 1967 or in 2021. From a distance of almost 55 years, it may be difficult to discern how revolutionary this music was, and much of it withstands aging. Morrison’s vocals are only average, salvaged by enormous passion, and punctuated by screams and wails that definitely do not age well. But try to put yourself in 1967. Maybe try listening with a little inebriation (I said this wasn’t for teenagers). There is virtually no bass guitar on this album, which might have been a fatal flaw. But gifted keyboardist Ray Manzarek plays all the bass lines on a keyboard bass. And he pulls it off. Excellent guitar riffs and solos (especially on “The End”) by Robby Krueger, and generally well-executed drums by John Densmore (He occasionally drops tempo on elaborate fills—a frequent weakness of 1960 rock & roll drummers). When listening to “Alabama Song (Whisky Bar), it might be helpful to know that it is the only song on the album not written by Morrison. It was written by Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill (in German) in 1927, originally as an anti-bourgeois parody of sermons of Martin Luther. This was back in the day when Germany was eight years into their first (unsuccessful) experiment with democracy, and five years before Hitler ‘successfully’ said, “Enough is enough”. Brecht was a communist, being awarded the Stalin Peace Prize in 1954, after 40 years of artistic labor, pioneering Marxist dialectical aesthetics. But back to the music: There’s a wonderful and entrancing middle section on “Light My Fire” which is not to be missed. But the artistic centerpiece of this album is the closing track “The End”. It helps to be familiar with the plot of “Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles (429 B.C.). Set aside twelve minutes, put on headphones, and listen to this. Loud. Francis Ford Coppola’s decision to use this song in the opening scene of “Apocalypse Now” (1979) helped to fix this work in the American psyche of the Vietnam era. It worked then, and it still works today. 4/5

With this album coming into the list I hope we have now broken through to the other side. The minute I saw this classic cover of the group shadowed by a pensive yet determined lead singers headshot (sort of looks like Tom Brady), I knew I was in for a treat. I’m sure I’ve listened to this album before but this felt like a new listen. There are so many gems on this one. Break On Through, Soul Kitchen, Alabama Song, Light My Fire, and of course The End. A classic song that is featured both in Apocalypse Now and when we play Call of Duty: Zombies. I love how the album, when thinking about it, screams classic Rock, but when you listen to it, it feels a lot lighter than Rock. It plays a lot more like other late 60’s early 70’s albums with the electric piano. Reminds me a little of Ryan Goslings band Dead Man’s Bones, especially on In the Room Where You Sleep. I say this as I’m listening to I Looked At You. So I don’t really see this as a Led Zepplin or Journey type of Rock but that doesn’t diminish the power in this album. Even with a few weaker songs this is still a fantastic album to listen to at any time. 9/10

This is an absolute classic. I noticed that I didn't listen to it for some time, but it is still one of my favorite albums of all time.

I will always love this album so much.

The End, Light My Fire

Coool, very cool

It’s alright

Interesante.

A couple of very good songs, but haven't carried through the years.

Not a bad album honestly. Not my style of music, but not bad music if that makes sense. Really nice drumming on most of the songs. Hopefully will listen again.

Don't have the stomach for Jim anymore I must be getting old. This band is so good I see that but his whole...cloud or vibe or whatever...ugh

This is one good example of how the radio can sometimes distract from the art of an album. Songs like Crystal Ship remind me how many good vibes are found between the overplayed hits. Whether psychedelics are involved or not, this self-titled LP of wild organ riffs and raw Morrison vocals provide quite a trip!

1967, Rock, starke 3

Really solid album. There were plenty of songs that were just ok in my opinion, but there were some that were great jams. Lyrically a solidly written album as well Favorite Track(s): “Break On Through,” “Light My Fire,” and “The End”

Unique sound and lyrics... one of my favorite bands of all time. Wish the ride could've lasted longer with Morrison.

Honestly I was expected more from this album, still a good listen it just suffered from high expectations for me.

great sounds, the doors are a hit

I was fully prepared for Pink Moon to be my favorite album of the week, and my favorite album on the list for at least more than 24 hours, then we get THIS?? One of my favorite albums of the '60s and of all time. It's the second one on this list that I have on vinyl. A true classic. I don't know how much I need to say here. This album is a hit machine. Jim Morrison's voice and Ray Manzarek's organ make the perfect psychedelic combination, and every song sounds like it could've been a single (even "Alabama Song"). "The End" is one of my favorite songs ever made. I have so many memories tied to it--I put it on during a tornado warning once in Greeley for dramatic effect, I play it during COD zombies matches when I know we've reached our wit's end, and of course the use in Apocalypse Now is legendary. We needed to balance out the British Invasion, so I agree with the Lizard King when he said "The West is the best. Get here, and we'll do the rest." Favorite tracks: THE END, Break On Through, Light My Fire, Soul Kitchen, Take It As It Comes. Album art: Iconic. In the words of Sleepy Joe, "c'mon, man!" The fact that 75% of the band is standing neatly next to a massive, superimposed headshot of Jim Morrison is hilarious and insane. Plus the font is awesome. 5/5

This album carries so much nostalgia for me. It was something I’d listen to as a teenager in order to connect with my dad. Jim Morrison is an iconic frontman, and his rich baritone over the Hammond organ and the rest of their rocking set the standard for the genre.

I went through a huge Doors phase, and still love going back to their music. This album is arguably their best, and there aren't really 'bad' songs or filler, as in some other albums. I used to really buy in to the Jim Morrison as poet thing, but I think it's mostly nonsense, now. I still really enjoy their music, though!

Timeless classic.

Well obviously a bander because of its classic nature, I don't like ALL the songs. I like also that this album hasn't been remastered, like so many of the others ones we listen to. You can hear the age in the music - I love it! That's more to do with Spotify than the music itself

Some good tunes.

🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

3* good start gets boring

Classic album. My favorite Doors album. 9-10/10 1. Light My Fire 2. Soul Kitchen 3. The End

I know this is seemingly blasphemous to some people, but I never got into The Doors. That Being said, this album is great for what it has done for the course of music, and its many genres. I want to give it a 4, but its my personal rating, so suck it!

Wasn't sure how much i was going to enjoy this as it's been forever since i listened to it. It is still amazing... even though "the end" gets up its own navel a bit. Love Crystal Ship.

Extraña la combinación de canciones tan pequeñas (2:15, 2:26) con otras tan largas (7:10, 11:43) Tracks: Break on Through, Take it as it comes y ps sí, Light my fire Avoid: Alabahama (whiskey song), The end.

Never listened to the full album, couple of classics here. Discovered them when the biographical film was released in 1991 (I was 15 years old at this time). Top track: Light My Fire

It’s a testament to how transformative this album was that every time I hear The Doors, I think “1960s”.

Classic tracks but overall not my cup of tea

The original psychedelic masterpiece. Loved it!

When I think of 60's rock, I think of music just like this. This album must have had a profound influence on the rock counter-culture scene then, but there's something profoundly darker in this album than their generational counterparts. I've actually read the book that this band based their name on, and I can totally see the influence in it's psychedelic nature. I love the organs on the songs, its just so groovy and classic sounding. Morrison's vocal performance is fantastic, the guitars are good but mixed a little low, there's nothing too special to say about the drums or bass, the vocals and organ really carried most of the songs. I don't think this type of sound has aged too well though, it's good but it sounds so terribly dated. Maybe that gives it novelty, being a unique product of the times, and thankfully the Doors did this type of music very well. I will also admit that some of these songs didn't flow together well at all (like alabama song). But on a positive note, the organ solo on light my fire is one of the greatest things I've ever heard though. Overall, I liked this album a lot, but I had some problems with it, so I'll rank it a 3.5/5. Favorite song: Light My Fire - Least Favorite: Alabama Song

This is a really nice slice of Doors music. If you wanted to know if you like the Doors this would be a really good place to start before diving into their deeper stuff. Classics and some semi weird stuff without it getting too weird. Very enjoyable.

Ooh baby that organ. This album is actually pretty damn unique for the time. Psychadelic, loud-rock, sort of garage jammy. When put in the context of a classic rock radio station, it's easy to look past all it has going for it. Not to mention this album is chock full of bangers.

Not my favorite genre, but the songs are very pleasant.

Doesn't really do anything for me!

Sounds alt for sure, lyrics don't come through easily. Lots of guitar blocking and a kind of driving ticky percussion. Kind of droning and drifting along in the middle of the album. A little too abstract or lacking strong melody for me.

I'm getting worried that this list is going to disproportionately consist of boomer rock. This album was solid.

I really groove in the mix of personality between Ray the classically trained brain and Jim the lizard king.

El Mejor de las puertas

Album muito bom, principalmente The end.

I'm starting to really like this style of rock. Some British Invasion bands are better, but this is a strong contender.

I'm wishing they'd skipped the ratings with this thing, or at least made them optional. This album might deserve a 3 or even a 2 from some perspectives of sophistication; I'm inclined to give it a four on pure nostalgia. I played this to death in the early 90s.

A good, classic rock album. Heard some tracks before but liked some I hadn't like Alabama Song. Break on Through to the Other Side and Light My Fire are classics of course.

Way more psychedelic Vietnam war apocalypse now vibes compared to LA Woman. The End and Light My Fire are obvious classics but Alabama Song is straight up creepy

Fantastic album. Might as well be a greatest hits part 1. Unique sound.

Love Morrison. This is the end, beautiful friend, the end.

Ouvi várias vezes o dia todo, mto bom

pirurupiripirupirupiriririrupirupiririririripupirupirupurupirupurupirupurupirupiru

Love twentieth century Fox. Love the sound of the end. The crystal ship reminded me of Jordan. I think the beginning of one of the songs is the same as a sum 41 song

Vitosen arvoinen nauhoitus!

try to run, try to hide RF: Classic/10

not a fan

It was ok. Light my fire was the best song. A lot of it dragged and was repetative⁸

I've had enough of Jim Morrison for a lifetime

Very good stuff.

There's so many great songs on here, and it's very rewarding to tune in for it. Alabama Song was my personal fave!

Phenomenal, Light my Fire is one of my all time favourite songs. Album as a whole is great, love the keyboards

Vacker, drömsk och mörk

Every song on this album is of the highest quality, not a bad one among them. Every song on this album is recognisable and still sounds great over 40 years later. This is what is meant by 'iconic', everyone knows these songs, they perfectly pinpoint a time in musical history. Apparently I really like The Doors.

Started off GREAT, ended a little too weird for me.

I really like this album, the “breakthrough” and “the end” are amazing. The Doors are a little overhyped, but a good band nonetheless.

Break on through

Nice one with lots of classics. Surprisingly short songs, except for the End!

Meh. It’s okay. The first half was alright, really lost steam after Light my Fire which was just so long and boring. The End was boring and too long. Just kinda a boring album overall.

oh, the Doors... Jim Morrison seems like a lot of girl's crushes because they can just romanticize the party boy lifestyle, when it reality this guy would be no one's friend. The music is pretty good; sloppy bluesy keyboard-heavy grooves with Morrison warbling over the top.

This album continues to be great despite the best efforts of Jim Morrison.

Enjoyed this more than their latter albums. Turns out Ray Manzerak was the main talent in the band, I’d assumed Morrison had written the big tunes but new respect for the organist.

Here's another album that I never really got into. It's got some interesting grooves, and the lyrics are pretty interesting as well, but it's a bit too trippy for my taste. I'm not feeling very generous today either, so 2 stars.

I quite like the first song, the rest of it got on my tits

Very nice thank you the doors

Astonishing for a debut. A cultural colossus.

This was the first actually great front-to-back listening in this journey.

Jim är otrolig

Pari legendaarista rallia

Great debut!

The kind of door I want to open!

Pretty good

Pretty cool stuff

Come on, Doors hei… timanttista ja kestää aikaa. Ei vaihtoehtoja.

Quite liked the psychadelic vibe but probably wouldn't revisit it...

The Doors had an iconic sound from the start. That classic organ paired with Jim Morrison's howl is unbeatable. Both cool and rebellious, it's a solid debut, even if a few songs meander a bit.

Pretty good!

I liked the second song on the album. Pretty chill but I kind of tuned it out.

Fantastic album.

A Doors album on the day of an enormous fight? 🤔

Boringly familiar
