People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm
A Tribe Called Quest
Album Summary
People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is the debut studio album by American hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, released on April 10, 1990 on Jive Records. After forming the Native Tongues collective and collaborating on several projects, A Tribe Called Quest began recording sessions for People's Instinctive Travels in late 1989 at Calliope Studios with completion reached in early 1990. The album's laid back production encompassed a diverse range of samples which functioned as a template for the group's unorthodox lyrics. People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm was met with acclaim from professional music critics and the hip hop community on release, and was eventually certified gold in the United States. Its recognition has extended over the years as it is widely regarded as a central album in alternative hip hop with its unconventional production and lyricism. It is also credited for influencing many artists in both hip hop and R&B. In a commemorative article for XXL, Michael Blair wrote that "People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm was immensely groundbreaking, and will eternally maintain its relevance within the culture and construction of hip-hop".

i like can i kick it
Can I dig it? Yes, I can.
Classic album. Smooth rhymes and delightful use of sampling
This was such a contrast with The Doors. It felt like a joyful hang out album. I especially liked “Push It Along”, “Luck of Lucien”, and “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo”.
Pretty good, for the type of hip hop that it exemplifies. I don't particularly care much for the monotone, constant word flowing. But the beats were great and I didn't hate most of it. It served well as background music for my work.
Tuvo sus buenos momentos. Me gustaron mucho los samples que hicieron.
Outstanding. A fantastic album; smooth with a deep groove.
Get it. Got to get it.
Starts off great, really good hooks and instrumentals. A bit long
"Youthful Expression", "Go Ahead In The Rain" ja "Description Of A Fool" on bängereitä. Hyvä albumi
#502/1001. My second ATCQ album here, and I think I prefer this one. Haven't really listened to either but both are worth going back to any time. However, this comes only second in my preference in this hip-hop filled week, losing to the Pharcyde, but beating OutKast and Arrested Development. I like my hip-hop fluid and jazzy, the samples here are taking a walk in the wild side and the ego is somewhere, but not at the front. Lyrics seem to be worth listening to. Fuck gangsta rap, this is da shaiba!
really cool love hiphop saved every.song
Great album start to finish. Q tips vocals and rapping style fit perfectly to the chilled melodies and beats. Can I kick it has to be up there as one of the best hip hop songs ever made
mysigt!!
There’s a lot of funk and fun going on here. Which is great. From the perspective of someone without a hip-hop background, it’s hard to put this into a time period context. I’m just not a huge fan of sampled music or that 90s hip hop sound. 3/5.

Juvenile, cute, fun, pretty, lush, and SOOOOO FUCKING INFLUENTIAL. Perhaps Tribe’s most influential album. Obviously by a lot of modern standards maybe not the best, with juvenile flows, some underwhelming song topics, and perhaps even some unimpressive samples, but it all shakes out to be really very pleasant. “Can I Kick It” is the obvious first highlight that comes to mind, easily and instantly iconic with the Lou reed sample, the momentous chorus, all of it. “Left My Wallet In El Segundo” is another easy highlight, super fun and light-hearted. Overall this is definitely an album to listen to as far as early hip-hop goes; albums like this, 3 Feet High, and plenty of others helped shape and influence what would become the wide world of alternative/indie/art rap, movements that all persist strongly to this day. 8.9/10 DOES IT BELONT ON THE LIST: YES REASON: quality, relevance, HEAVY influence
Can you kick it? Yes you can.
The flow is boring but there are some classics
I've heard Bonita Applebum and obviously Can I Kick It? before, but not listened to this album before. I don't know why but preconceptions wise I kind of thought this was a decent first album that the band then surpassed with the follow-up The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders, not exactly Afrocentric hip-hop's Pablo Honey but in that conversation, whereas in contrast De La Soul came out the gate with their masterpiece 3 Feet High and Rising and then tailed off. That idea is doing the artistry on display here a disservice, it's a great album, nice jazzy touches and lyrical dense. I stand corrected.
No lo he podido terminar de escuchar pero el disco es un pepino, bastante largo eso si. Mola cuando mezclan rap y jazz.
Love it. I remember what rap and hip hop was like in the late 70s and early 80s. I also remember what it turned into gangsta rap by late 80s (and what it is now). Breath of fresh air just having stories told with a good beat like earlier days
Generally I don't like rap and this album hasn't changed my mind
I really really liked this album
really loved super unique
One famous song
This was a fun and enjoyable listen. The rhythms and beats were to my liking. Not a lot of heavy material. Mixing in some comedic raps.
1 - TERRIBLE
Well Rap ain't one of the music genre that I like or even listen to but after reading the review in the 1001 Albums book I continued to listen. Tolerable for Rap
Absolute banger to start with i assume footprints is sampled from sir duke by duke ellington
This is #day790 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here's my second and final record by A Tribe Called Quest, which is their debut, too. That's what I call a perfect specimen of the Golden Age of hip-hop. That laid-back jazziness, though. Little to add. Otherwise, this is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day791.
DNF
Okay not bad.
Great album. Really enjoyed the (not so subtle!) samples, sometimes funny lyrics and nice rhythms.
Jazzy hip hop, love it
I love how fun and playful this is, some transitions could be better between tracks but otherwise I think the production is great (didn’t listen to remixes at the end)
2.5 - a bit long and repetitive
This was one of the best Hip-Hop albums we got. Love the classic beats and samples. Enjoyed Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick it? (with Lou Reed sample), Rhythm, Mr. Muhammad, and Go ahead in the rain. Listened to this album on a walk and perfect for a stroll around in the fall. 4/5
not in rap. not in rap. not in rap.
I can't do this - 90s rap just is not my thing and I'm not going to waste my time listening to an album that is an hour and a half long.
Sounds like waking up in a good mood.
Дебютный альбом в целом ничем не отличается от The End Low Theory, поэтому с одной стороны он так же неплох, а с другой показывает простой группы и зажатость в одном и том же звуке без ярких хитов.
A really fantastic hip hop album
Album #172: People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm - A Tribe Called Quest Genre (W): East Coast hip-hop, alternative hip-hop, progressive rap, jazz rap Singles: I Left My Wallet in El Segundo, Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It? I have not listened to this album previously. Thoughts?: I love how laidback and relaxed this album’s production is! This is one of my favorite produced albums, and I love how there’s nothing “bravado” or “tough” about it, I’m burned out on “tough” rap. This was a pleasant surprise! Favorite tracks: Push It Along, Luck of Lucien, Footprints, I Left My Wallet in El Segundo, Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It?, Youthful Expression, Rhythm (Devoted to the Art of Moving Butts), Go Ahead in the Rain, Description of a Fool
Very listenable and you can hear it’s influence
The sampling didn't always make sense to me and this is rap so no thanks but at least it didn't make me cringe. 2.5/5
Eh
The beats/sampling, production, and listening experience are all very good, but their flows still sound a little corny and dated, sadly. Still, It's noticeably better than Beastie Boys, for example. I can imagine that they were probably viewed as the artsy side of hip-hop at the time. This album is still quite good, and I'm stuck between a high 3 and a low 4
What does it mean, to say that a piece (or collection) of music sounds dated? Is it necessarily a bad thing? Won't all music eventually, in some sense, sound dated -- i.e., of its time (of creation)? And, in some 'rough justice' form of 'survival of the fittest', the cream will (very broadly/loosely speaking) tend to rise to the top (sometimes). Hildegard of Bingen, Bach, Scott Joplin, Fats Waller, etc., etc. (But, of course, so much turns -- thumbs up, vs. thumbs down, remembered, vs. forgotten -- on that word, “tend.”) This one started off slow for me - the first 2 tracks sounded weak, and dated. But, as it went on, it grew on me. It still sounds dated, but, for the most part, I like(d) it. Closest comparison is De La Soul, who I like more, but you could do worse than be compared to De La Soul. So, by the end, the choice for me is between 3 and 4 stars. After a second listen, I'm going with 4 stars, especially as I appreciate the impressive array of samples and sounds that were, for the most part, smoothly incorporated, and/or used as building blocks. Back to the 'sounding dated' issue: how will this sound in 50 years? 100? Who knows, right? (Also, does it sound dated in a different way to me than to my sons - born after this was released - and how will it sound 20 or 30 years from now, to someone not yet born?) I suspect it might well sound very dated indeed, possibly only of interest as a curiosity. And yet, as a mark of how this album grew on me, I sincerely hope that I'm wrong.
It's fun that they use so many famous samples, many of which we've already encountered through this list. It's a fun record in general. The skits, adlibs, storytelling and samples all provide entertainment. Where it disappoints me is in the quality of the rapping and beat production. I get that it's a seminal work for hip-hop, but it also sounds dated. Many of the cadences sound corny and the instrumental decisions are notably worse than a J Dilla or Neptunes production, for examples. So, it's not one that I'm likely to return to, even though I enjoyed one listen.
Surprised this album is rated so low, fantastic piece of art
no muy lo mío pero entretenido, a esta madre le hacen falta half stars :(
Very solid debut that shows a lot of promise. Not their best, but a great album
Had previously heard a few tracks and liked them, but overall really impressed. There were certainly some standouts and a few less strong tracks. This is the kind of hip hop I like. The influence of funk and jazz is obvious.
Sound: Jazzy, eclectic Lyrics: Playful, laid-back Highs: "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo," "Can I Kick It?," "Ham 'n' Eggs" Lows: None, but later albums benefit from Phife's expanded presence
Lovely example of hip-hop
Kinda samey and uninteresting
An excellent rap record by one of the best groups in hip hop. Its not even the best Tribe LP (definitely 2 if not 3 better albums) and it’s still a 5
not entirely my cup of tea, but lots of bit I enjoyed
Can I Kick It? Makes this album perfect on its own, all the other tracks are sugar on top.
Debut album on fire! Such a cool early 90s feel. A great trip down memory lane and still holds up today. Two great albums in a row with this and Nas. 9/10 Top song... Luck of Lucien
3.5 liked it a lot, but a little went to the hat store today and bought myself a hat at times
Tip and Phife bringing the grooves and fun in an era when hip-hop was getting angry and gangster. The samples and flow are good, but it's a step below the perfection that is Low End Theory.
This is definitively not my music.
Influential, probably worthy of this list and I'm happy I listened to it, but nothing I will be craving to put on again soon.
Yuck. Just as bad as the last one. Boring beats, but the rhyming overuse is the most annoying bit. Somewhere between 1 and 2.
Exceptional. Not the best Tribe album in my book, but they basically never missed. What an extraordinary group. So unique, so clever, so fun. These guys can rap about LDL cholesterol and I will sit and listen to it like a good little boy. That takes some doing.
7,50/10 Buen album. Medio raro a veces, pero termina muy bien
Felt so cool listening to this. Much cooler than say The Marshall Mathers EP which I felt embarrassed by.
ATCQ delivers everytime. Great beats, great bars, smooth flow. Such a fun album, such a unique sound especially for when it came out. Such an influential group and they killed it with their debut. Not my favorite from ATCQ but still a great listen
ok
“Soy lo que no es de mi”
Ya no sé que ratings dar a este tipo de albumes, no lo escucharia, pero dentro del hiphop fue entretenido y estuvo disfrutable. Le pongo 3 ya fue.
I enjoyed, but maybe not as much as the previous album i had. Still a great album and a good listen. Rhythm was my standout track. 3.5 stars
Nice old school rap, contains Can I Kick It?, a generational song that is still sampled to this day
great beats, smooth bars, although for some reason i started to get a bit tired after "can i kick it" (which i did like), but prob just a skill issue on my part. "ham n eggs" was hilarious so i got back into a good mood starting from there
I really enjoyed this. The rap is so smooth and flowing, it just sounds amazing.
I don't like this one as much as Low End or Midnight Marauders, but it's still very good.
Was super stoked to listen to this one thinking it was A Tribe Called Red. Would I listen again—yeah, maybe when I need some motivating beats and just ordinary, lyrics that aren’t offensive m-fing misogynistic. Overall fun and nice to be taken out of my usual genre.
Pas vraiment…
Top
Tarinallista räpti-puhelaulu-muzakkia. Ihan okei, mutta alko loppua kohden jo vähä väsyttään.
Letkeetä hippiä ja myös hoppia. En itse täysiä syty tämän tyylin old skool hiphopille, paikkansa löytyy, vaikutteet näkyy, hyvää sämpläystä, hyvää biittiä. Omalla kohdalla jää mid tieriin, eli kuunteli ihan mielellään, muttei jättänyt jälkeä sydämeen.
20 starts out of 5.
Very interesting to listen to what I assume is one of the building blocks of 90s hip-hop. It's fun and a good vibe, with some iconic tracks in there. Can I kick it, for example. That said, to me, this is background music. It doesn't stand out that much.
Wow, just some incredible production. I would’ve been a massive massive fan if I was around in their prime.
TCQ is always a good vibe; this is so impressive for a debut album. This feels like the progenitor of the “lofi beats” genre but somehow it’s still better than most lofi beats today. I would definitely put this on again.
I dont think I have listened to a Tribe Called Quest before and honestly its a shame because they are really fun. Its the right balance between having fun and fooling around and saying some meaningful shit in that time. The only problem I had is that some of the sounds of the tracks felt kinda similar and melded together.
I've been looking forward to A Tribe Call Quest showing up on the generator, and they did not disappoint. This was a very fun hip-hop album, although they barely switch up on rhythm and inflection, so it sounds pretty samesy after a while. Though this genuinely didn't feel like an hour long album. Very good.
First hiphop album to date that I actually like! Can I kick it???
of all the rap albums I have listened to so far on this album list, this one might be the best one.
such an effortlessly sick album great sampling, loved the bass work, drums are of their time yet sound far from dated, still really effective admittedly fucking useless at lyrical analysis so not even gonna go there but these songs just sound fantastic. end of story favourite songs: footprints, mr muhammad, go ahead in the rain least favourite song: none
4.25/5
Cool
Kinda shocked to see this and not The Low End Theory or Midnight Marauders here (wouldn’t be surprised if they eventually show up though). This is still an incredible body of work with everything that Tribe came to define in hip-hop
While not quite the masterpiece that is Low End Theory, this is still amazing hip hop for early 90s. TCQ were a breath of fresh air among all of the harder edged rap. Smooth, funky and jazzy with some great samples. It just doesn’t feel quite as polished or fully developed as low end theory.
The funkiest of beats with rhymes that will leave you stupefied. For me, the most impressive part is how easy the Tribe makes this all look. This album is loaded with a number of bangers but a few of my favs are Left My Wallet in El Segundo, Can I Kick It, and Bonita Applebum. An amazing collection that is without a doubt worthy of being on this list.
This is a classic. It was audacious as a debut and pioneering with Tip’s use of jazz samples via cassette tape edits. The ‘sitting around the living room’ approach to the delivery flew in the face of the hardcore and gangster trends and influenced so much of the 90s rap sound. This might be my favorite album from the early 90s, with creative, intricate rhymes that make it a truly fun style listen. So many classic tracks and lines. “38-24-37 / You and me honey, we’re a match made in heaven!”
I enjoyed the heck out of this but I'm glad we listened to Low End Theory first, which is just a whole different level of greatness. You can feel and hear their sound here, they have their voice, but they are missing some refinement. Minor gripes, most importantly their jazzy beats had my head bopping, their lines had me smiling. Such a fun group to listen to. Great album.
