Album Summary
Neon Bible is the second studio album by Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire. It was first released on March 5, 2007, in Europe and a day later in North America by Merge Records. Originally announced on December 16, 2006, through the band's website, the majority of the album was recorded at a church the band bought and renovated in Farnham, Quebec. The album is the first to feature drummer Jeremy Gara, and the first to include violinist Sarah Neufeld among the band's core line-up. Neon Bible became Arcade Fire's highest-charting album at the time, debuting on the Billboard 200 at number two, selling 92,000 copies in its first week and more than 400,000 to date. Being released within a month of similarly successful releases by The Shins (Wincing the Night Away) and Modest Mouse (We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank), Neon Bible was cited as an example of the popularization of indie rock. Critics met the self-produced Neon Bible with acclaim. Publications like NME and IGN praised the album for its grandiose nature, while Rolling Stone and Uncut opined that it resulted in a distant and overblown sound.

Not bad. Interesting to hear the original "My body is a cage" - I'd only hear the Peter Gabriel cover before. A good solid album.
bella scoperta, da ascoltare altro album Funeral
I feel conflicted about listening to Arcade Fire these days (don't like supporting the lead singer) but there's a lot to like in this album. Keep the Car Running, Intervention, No Cars Go, and My Body is a Cage are all great indie tracks.
It's quite good. A pity Wim Hough or whatever his name is is such a creep
Strong follow up to funeral with a more epic sound and the start of more instruments being used leading to their rather busy looking live shows. Having David Bowie as a public fan helps and Peter Gabriel covering ‘my body is a cage’ brought it to my attention. Their songs at this point are far better within an album as opposed to randomly hearing one.
There’s one song on here I adore and the rest annoyed me
my bible wasn't neon
I understand their greatness/cultural relevance, rock opera is just not my thing.
One of their big 3, probably not the best of them, but still a very good album.
Kinda like if Springsteen was baroque. Nocarsgos is great
First 3 Arcade Fire albums are all 5/5 albums and while Neon Bible might be my third favourite of those three, it's still an excellent albun.
Genuinely some of the most uninspired, discount The Killers wannabe music I've ever heard. Like, what is a single from this album? Which one stands out?
Pretty confident 2000s Indie is just not my kinda music Nothing too egregiously bad on this one; I think the vocals are alright and there’s some genuinely interesting instrument choices that bring this one up a bit. There’s some neat themes in this one at times It’s just super forgettable for the most part and I don’t particularly know why. It almost feels like they rushed parts of its production for no reason, and the band itself doesn’t really seem as into the music as they should be I don’t know how to write a whole lot more about this one, but it’s just an exceedingly average album and I kinda hate how that’s the impression I get from every indie album we get on here
It's very proto-indie rock, but doesn't have that bite. More vibes than anything
It’s was alright
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Springsteen cared a little less about working-class America and a little more about God? Answer: It's pretty good! I know Win Butler is a POS, and I know I'm the exact target audience for this kind of thing, but I just can't not enjoy this. Every track a closer. That organ!
Yikes
3.5 for me, but not quite a 4.0. Highlights: (Antichrist Television Rules) & No Cars Go
Some good songs, but drags on a bit at times. Not Arcade Fire's best
Keep the car running, no cars go, windoswill, my body is a cage, tous des classiques de l’époque.
Fantastic ❤️
Surprisingly not for me. I like indie rock and I like Arcade Fire but not a fan of this album at all. The music is fine but I just couldn’t get into it.
I had the pleasure of seeing this band headline Leeds festival in 2010 and to this day and hundreds of gigs later that performance is up there as one of the most captivating I have ever seen. For a band with so many members every single one of them serves a purpose on every track on this album apart from Regine…. Somebody needed to tell her to not have lead vocal on a track- Win I’m looking at you and wondering where she let you put it to get that passed by the band! Every track is an absolute banger. (Except half of one…) My favourite track could literally be any of them- ‘Black mirror’ dark and moody start to the album. ‘Keep the car running’ that intro just drags you in and uplifts you instantly and the lyrics are magical! ‘Neon bible’ plunges us back into moody territory only for it to smash back into life with the organs of ‘intervention’ coming into life. And this track is one of my most played tracks of all time! Then we have Regine… I’m sure some may find her vocal nice but I don’t and ‘black wave’ really doesn’t do anything for me until… the second half and Win takes over again and the second half beats the first half down into submission! ‘Ocean of noise’ not the strongest on the album but so emotionally moving. Which flows into ‘the well and the lighthouse’ what is wrong with people if they can’t head bop and sing along to this banger?!? Even Regines backing vocals can’t bring this down! ‘Antichrist television blues’ another track that would be considered weak by mr public I reckon but it’s awesome! The fear that shines through in ‘windowsill’ so moving and so thought provoking.. ‘No cars go’ absolute belter, nothing more to say here! The harmonies and the uplifting sound.. just wow. Then finishing the album as we started with a dark and moody ending ‘my body is a cage’ love it! So… Worst track- first half of ‘black wave’ Best track- so difficult and the singles scream out but I’m going to away from those and say ‘the well and the lighthouse’ Love-love-love it! 10/10
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible A great example of a band that are a hundred times better live than on record. All the energy, the clarity, the eclecticism that is so evident on stage just disappears into a murky puddle of sound. Not until we reached Intervention did anything stand out from the baseline of stodge. And then again only, the admittedly brilliant, No Cars Go, leapt into my attention. Maybe screaming out for a remaster or something but until then I won't be going back. Best Track - No Cars Go. Irresistible. Worst Track - Black Mirror. Set the tone to brown...and it stayed there. 3.5/10
not my style
It was… fine? I liked the rock-y quality in some songs but I’m mostly just confused
A bit stadium-esque so does not match listeningmto off my phone. Will need to listen to again really.
I remember being kind of underwhelmed by this when it was released. The fuck was my problem?
It's alright music, but it goes nowhere for me. The music is meticulously crafted, wonderfully slick, and completely fails to hook me. It's like the artists came up and said "Sorry, but could we borrow your attention for an hour?" when they could have said "Dude, you gotta hear THIS!" All filler, no killer. My Rating: 2/5 broken tubes.
4/10
That Indoe Rock sound from my college days hits ya right in the nostalgia lemme tell ya
Респект за Black Wave/ Bad Vibrations і No Cars Go, це прям вау
interesting moments as well as bland moments
okay I suppose. I don't know what it is about bands from this era, but I just never really cared that much about them. 3/5.
These guys are CANCELLED!!! Used to like this back in high school
A couple of these songs I really liked. I confuse Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend all the time.
I think this is the first full Arcade Fire album I've heard and I liked it more than I expected to. In places it seemed heavily inspired by Springsteen which I did not expect.
2.5 - Still not much of an Arcade Fire fan, but I did think that album closer was good.
As with previous AF albums I listened to: repetitive and boring. Some might even say pretentious...
A good album with some standout tracks but I honestly think I prefer their debut to this one.
5 Can't believe I'd never listened to these guys until a week ago, can't decide if this or funeral is better, both very good albums anyway
Amazing album, maybe more tight than The Suburbs, but with less standouts. 4.25
What do I say other than the balls to put choir and orchestra in your second indie rock album. This slaps so hard it wins slap contests. Varied, rich, loud, so many insane tracks; Cars, Body, Black Mirror, Ocean, just banger after banger.the three album run from Funeral to Bible to Suburbs is unbeatable
Springsteen takes Chris Isaak to a slightly ominous church service, and somehow I’m into it. Big, dramatic, and thoroughly enjoyable.
Not for me
quite interesting
I have a complicated relationship with this album. Not my favorite Arcade Fire. Fav track is No Cars Go.
Not bad reminds me of the 80 new wave era ..bit really my thing but not horrible
Interesting. I should listen to it more carefully
I discovered that the lead singer of this band has credible sexual assault allegations against him. I find the music hard to listen to now.
Awesome. As good as the first one.
Arcade Fire – Neon Bible (2007) On Day 297, this record delivered a towering, grandiose experience defined by its rich church acoustics and pervasive atmosphere. While structurally less erratic and complex than the raw indie-folk shifts of their debut Funeral, this album benefits from exceptional cohesion every track pulls into the same thematic basket, complementing one another with a unified, apocalyptic weight. "Intervention" emerged as the undisputed favorite, powered by its spine-chilling pipe organ fanfare and massive dynamic crescendo. The moody, string-driven tension of "Black Mirror" set the stage with authority, while the relentless drive of "Keep the Car Running" and the breathless narrative urgency of "(Antichrist Television Blues)" injected high-octane momentum. Balanced by the melancholy brass waltz of "Ocean of Noise" and the triumphant, marching catharsis of "No Cars Go," the album easily absorbs weaker moments like "Black Wave" to deliver an impactful, cohesive statement. A grand, cinematic triumph. A strong 4/5.
I knew Arcade Fire by name, but I’d never actually listened to one of their albums on purpose. Any review of *Neon Bible* really depends heavily on your own expectations: Anyone expecting the album to be groundbreaking in any way will surely be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you just let yourself get into the songs, you’ll find that it makes for some pretty great background music. I suspect that’s exactly why so many albums from the 2000s strike me as so boring: they’re no longer meant to be consciously listened to. Once I realized that, I am totally fine with Arcade Fire. But of course, that’s not enough to land it in the top tier.
Man this has me hoping Funeral holds up as I remember it fondly (considering I haven't listened to it in 10 years). While it doesn't exactly sound like it and is a bit too early to be classified as totally such, this really feels like millenial "stomp, clap, hey!" music making it sound extremely dated. Repetitive riffs with droning monotone vocals, and the occassional classical instrument underlay. Apart from Intervention which was fine, the album as a whole is a skip.
Not really sure what to say about this one. It’s okay. Some interesting stuff but nothing mind blowing. 3
Pretty good for a Canadian Band, but I would prefer Robin Sparkles
too millennial optimism for me
Even discounting the allegations against Win Butler, this album is just absolutely turgid isn't it. None of the songs go anywhere. By a distance the worst of the 3 Arcade Fire albums I've heard.
Nice, very 00´s, very forgettable.
Production was decent but the vocals were absolutely not my cup of tea.
Review - Third album on the list I've heard that was recorded in a church - Presbyterian this time. Is it Bruce Springsteen for guys who can't deadlift? Yes. Is it brilliant anyway? Score - 8.5/10 Need to listen? YES
1.7/5 Another band I don't get the hype for. Boring and doesn't offer any real good songs.
Interesting album. I hadn’t really listened to it before. It’s in the middle of the rock part of indie and the stomp clap hey period. I liked it but I didn’t love it.
I missed Arcade Fire when they came out and when they were popular. Was certainly aware of them, just never bothered to listen to them. This is good music. Well crafted, good players. The lead singer has a nice voice. It's obvious that they take themselves very seriously. The production is good. Glad I listened to it, probably wouldn't ever come back to it on my own again.
I was the target audience for this album at its release. However I find it boring and pretentious. The singles are okay but it mostly sounds the same.
I like some songs by Arcade Fire. On this one “Windowsill” is quite good. Their sound is too subdued for me; it lacks intensity. I liked Suburbs better overall, but this album isn’t bad either
Not so much a sophomore slump as a pulling back of the curtain to reveal a lack of songwriting chops, an over reliance on vibes, and a dearth of melodic sophistication at the core of the band. Add to that the less-than-pleasant vocals and lyrics that are a fruitless search for meaning in pathetically non-specific darkness when they're not falling back on vague descriptions of unearned personal struggle and you have the full Arcade Fire experience in a nutshell. It's very telling that 'No Cars Go', one of the stupidest songs I've ever heard, was plucked from an earlier EP to be showcased on this record. Apparently, they consider it one of their strongest compositions. Any producer worth their salt would have insisted that the band throw all of these songs in the trash and start over.
Boring corporate rock for the flat white generation.
very much my vibe a little grudge but floaty
Liian "taidekoulumaista".
Not quite on the same level as The Suburbs, but still rather good. For me, there wasn't enough of that signature storytelling going on, or if there was I didn't find it impactful enough to stay with me afterwards. The songs are at least still catchy, containing plenty of musicality to sink your teeth into, and the vocal range is impressive. Not my favourite effort from Arcade Fire, but far from their worst.
First listen Saved 3/11 Top track: My Body Is a Cage
Not AF's best album, but still a really solid piece of art
Never listened. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Good - Black Mirror reminds me in a strange way of a much more straight faced Ween track. Keep The Car Running has a certain kinetic energy and is a nice enough track. Intervention is a good song. There is something slightly sterile about this album that doesn't really connect with me. I do like Ocean Of Noise though. The second half of the album continues in a similar vein to the first. It's all pretty good but nothing really jumps out at me.
meh
great album! lots of very lovely sounds mixed in to the whole indie rock vibe. beautiful lyrics. just not my favourite ever
Indie rock/pop isn't really my thing, but I cannot lie, this is exceptional from a musical quality standpoint. It sounds like the vocalist is a real prick, but the music itself is pretty damn impressive. A little self-indulgent for my taste (as is most indie rock) but the sound and scope of this album is grandiose. Not something I'll frequent but I can understand the musicianship.
Not as captivating as later albums, but clear beginnings here of what’s to come.
Couple of the lyrics were nice but I didn't really feel moved.
Not my cup of tea. A couple of good tracks but that’s it.
these guys shoulda been one and done with the first album
Keep the car running, Neon bible and Intervention may be one of the best 3 song sequences on any album. This and Funeral are 2 of the greatest albums of the last 20 odd years in my opinion
Arcade Fire made some great music before we learned to hate them, but this is my least favorite of their albums.
Nothing really that interesting.
I've never really gotten into Arcade Fire. For some reason, it's just always felt like they've been putting in more effort and energy than the quality of music is really worth. Some nice moments, but overall my mind wasn't changed.
Of the first three Arcade Fire albums, this is the third best. But still fantastic. Intervention is a song for the ages.
After Funeral set the indie world afire, Neon Bile was the most anticipated album of 2007 in the circles I ran in. While this was the perfect time for the dreaded Difficult Sophomore Album, Neon Bible is great start to finish. "Keep the Car Running," "Intervention," "(Antichrist Television Blues)," "Windowsill," and "No Cars Go" are my favorites, but it's all good. Boy howdy does the post-9/11 & Iraq War despair run deep. Too bad it was only a prelude to what would follow a decade later.
I bought this when it came out as it was hailed as the greatest album of all time, and I was deep into my second phase of being all over current music. I didn’t think much of it then. I listened to it for the second time ever today. I didn’t think much of it today, either. It’s ok. It’s not bad.
started off alright, but the more i listened to it, the more annoying the whole album became
