A nice album to just switch off and forget about the stress of the world. Music to tap your feet to. A well paced selection of ‘mature’ punk tracks I would say. Best track- ‘down at the tube station’ Worst track- for some reason ‘in the crowd’ starts grating about a minute in 😬 Although ‘David watts’ is meh too. Solid album 8/10

Album started well but with ‘sympathy for the devil’ then moved onto second track ‘no expectations’ unfortunately I did have expectations and this album did not live up to them, by track 3 I was wanting to call a doctor as my ears had heard enough, however I persevered and was rewarded with a nice piano section in ‘jigsaw puzzle’ however by the song ‘stray cat blues’ i was ready to give up completely so I was more than glad when it ended and I hope my 1001 album commitment gets better than this first listen. 1/10 for 1 decent song.
‘Zero’ was nothing to write home about before the album bounced into ‘heads will roll’ a solid song for getting on the dance floor. ‘Soft shock’ came next with a building atmospheric presence that finally hit half way through the next song ‘skeleton’ which felt like it had a Scottish underbelly and the vocals were lovely throughout. The tempo then cooled again for my favorite song on the album ‘dull life’ which soon upped tempo again and had my feet tapping along. ‘Shame and fortune’ followed a similar vibe. ‘Runaway’ felt like a slightly dark love song but I liked it. ‘Dragon Queen’ felt like it didn’t quite fit on the album and left me disappointed and very much like a filler track. ‘Hysteric’ and ‘little shadow’ followed this similar change to the album in feeling like the dance had fallen out the album and like the band are going more down a rock route which I don’t think suits.. only to finish on the song ‘faces’ which merged the dance and rock together giving a good end to the album. Overall a nice listen.
After learning who ‘Hole’ were before listening I was expecting some scream type grunge and I was not disappointed with this woman fronted grunge punk bands album. The first 3 songs had even my daughter looking up from her breakfast and asking who I was listening to so she took note too. She loves Paramore and Olivia Rodrigo and I reckon both those have taken inspiration from Courtney Love. ‘Doll parts’ was a welcome well placed track which showcased some softer vocals. ‘She walks on me’ showcasing the best guitar work on the album in my opinion along with some solid vocals so is my best song on the album. By the time the last song ‘Rock star’ appeared I felt like Courtney was well overdue a throat sweet. Overall I enjoyed the album and can see where lots of the female punk acts that have arrived on the scene of the 00s will have taken lots of inspiration.
Review Kanye West. ‘We don’t care’ track to sum up my feelings of this album before starting it however I found myself bouncing along to this track. ‘Graduation’ started with a what the fuck was that Kanye comment, my thoughts entirely 😳 ‘All falls down’ features a nice female vocal. ‘Jesus walks’ a track I remember from the mid 00s and it’s not got any better listening to it 20 years later. ‘Workout plan’ I’m not entirely sure what’s going on by this stage of the album, women thanking Kanye for a workout plan that’s made them the envy of their friends, rapping about Michael Jackson two songs in a row and Halle Berry getting shoehorned in too. Then as the tracks go on I hear rapping about a nap sack sprayer, lots of talk of degrees and not working and a lot of rapping about niggers, women and college. The rest of the album just seemed to mould into one constant noise and by the time the album had finished I was relieved. Not my cup of tea but I can appreciate the production of the album was on point and at times it was easy listening. The best track been ‘we don’t care’ Hopefully tomorrow’s offering will be more up my street. Best track - we don’t care. Worst track- lil Jimmy skit. 1.5/10
Such a solid start to an album. ‘Changes’ hitting all the right spots followed by a couple more solid tracks- then…. ‘life on Mars’ hits. A song that I perceive to be aimed at an unhappy lady who uses film to escape life. If the song was wrote today it would probably describe a woman using social media to escape her unhappy life! Following this is ‘Kooks’ ‘quicksand’ and ‘fill your heart’ 3 songs showcasing Bowles amazing voice in what feels like such a subtle way, I’m wanting to turn my headphones up more it feels so quiet but I realise I’m on the highest setting! Then the worst two tracks on the album follow before ‘Queen Bitch’ strikes. My favourite song on the album (controversial I know and on another day it could easily be another) Before you know it the album is over and I’m left wanting more which is always a good sign! Favourite song - Queen Bitch Worst song- Andy Warhol. Overall a very solid 9/10
43 minutes of solid rock. Vocally the melodic singing is good however the intense screams are not for me personally. However that was more than made up for on this rock album with the fast searing guitar solos and hard hitting riffs. This rock album as certainly stood the test of time and needed playing at full volume (not sure if it was my safest day using a saw bench listening to this album!) Best track on the album was child in time- the slow build up, the amazing solos and the fast paced finish brought such joy! Overall a very solid 8/10
44 minutes- 4 tracks and not a clue what was coming. Unfortunately the electronic jazz movement I was surprised with was not for me at all, made worse I suppose by the fact I’ve recently been introduced to the work of Skys instrumentals. The first track started and 30 seconds in I was wanting a stevie wonder type vocal to accompany. Unfortunately the album became a blur of very similar sounding music. No face or worse tracks as it all blended as one. 1/10 for making some noise.
Sounded like an album made in his parents bedroom. I found it sounded a bit Radiohead at one point but it never stood out and grabbed my attention. The only track I pulled my phone out of my pocket to look at as I was enjoying was ‘Cupids trick’ so that has to be my favourite off the album. Going through the album a second time I do recall enjoying ‘between the bars’ as well. My least favourite been ‘2.45am’ The album was signified by me as this album finished and my phone started giving me random songs every song it gave me I enjoyed more than songs off this album - The XX, Flaming Lips, The National, Arcade Fire, the list goes on. Anyway overall I didn’t find it terrible but certainly not great so a mid road 5/10
After listening to the album twice it certainly woke me up this Friday morning! ‘Running with the devil’ setting the scene for a frantic opening followed by an ‘eruption’ of a solo which any rock star past or present would be proud of. Following this ‘you really got me’ I’m not sure of this is a Van Halen original as I’ve heard other versions before but it packed a punch 🥊 The rest of the album then flicked through some great tracks mixed in with some good but when ‘ice cream man’ hit I knew I had my favourite track right there! So catchy! The second half of the album reminded me of the Iron Maiden sound but I really enjoyed it and might even now go and listen for a third time. Fave track- ice cream man. Worst track- a push picking one but ‘I’m the one’ takes the fall. 9/10
Just good feelings throughout, the guy was clearly a player in his time and to put it into music like this really resonated, nice guitar, superb piano action and lyrics from the heart. I liked it a lot, so catchy and easy to get caught up in. Fave track- ‘honey chile’ Worst track- not sure I disliked any Tbf. Solid 8.5/10
I certainly won’t be rushing back to listen to this album but if a track or two popped up on my playlist I’m sure I could identify the producer of the tracks but almost certainly not the titles! I suppose I feel a little more cultured after listening to the album though. Fave song- Felicidade or Segredo (the only two songs I looked for the title and played again) Least fave- Voca Gosta I thought it was going to be a long listen after this second track but luckily the album picked up after this track. Not quite middle of the road so 4/10
A perfect day for a bit of reggae, 27 degrees outside and the music just bouncing turned right up. Not usually my thing but I enjoyed listening to this album, my favorite track by a long way was ‘Marcus Garvey’ The only track I had a problem with was ‘slavery days’ I mean how many times can you be asked if you remember the slavery days? And is he really that self centred about his culture that he doesn’t think slavery still exists in today’s world so the question eventually becomes painfully annoying as the song plays. Not sure it would score this highly in a cold winters day but today it’s a solid 7/10
An absolutely chaotic and frantic album. Not entirely sure what was going on but whatever was going on kept me intrigued throughout. Favorite song ‘on the surface’ I think this song summed up the random chaotic world of the album perfectly. Worst track- ‘blow daddy O’ I think this is where the ideas had finally became too weird 😂 Not entirely sure how to rate it as I don’t actually think it was good- or was it, I can’t make up my mind but I’m edging on the side of like so for that it has to be a 6/10
After hearing them name checked in friends and also other songs in the past I was expecting good things. Unfortunately the album started a bit underwhelming with ‘spellbound’ for me, however things picked up with the next track and the best song on the album ‘into the light’ The rest of the album just played- I had no need to find out track names as I didn’t find anything to stand out. It wasn’t a bad album- it just wasn’t good and certainly didn’t feel unique. An underwhelming 4/10 Best track ‘into the light’ Worst track- ‘Halloween’
I’m not entirely sure about this album, the vocals leave a lotttt to be desired but something about the catchyness of the songs kept me listening for 2 full listens. The chants of “do a runner” in shoplifting a personal highlight as I found myself chanting along with my daughter. I’m Glad the album wasn’t any longer than it was but what was here put a smile on my face! Fave song- ‘shoplifting’ Worst song- ‘FM’ 6/10
I’m probably going to go against the grain here but I felt this album was a tale of two halves. I really enjoyed the first half of the album, all of tracks 1-9 were superb, the standouts been ‘you make me feel so young’ ‘I’ve got you under my skin’ and ‘old devil moon’ I then felt like the album fell off a cliff and was full of ‘filler’ culminating in ‘makin whoopee’ which was dreadful! No denying the vocals have survived the generations and he would succeed in today’s society still. But this album didn’t have hit after hit as I was expecting but those first 9 tracks brought enough for a pretty decent score still. Best track- ‘old devil moon’ Worst track- ‘makin whoopee’ Overall 8/10
Undeniably a truly outstanding voice and this album hits like a freight train with the opening tracks ‘rolling in the deep’ & ‘rumour has it’ unfortunately though the album then veers off down a pity party of hatred towards men (or man) who knows! A couple of decent songs along the way no doubt - ‘set fire to the rain’ one of them but the feelings had already turned cold. The Cure cover ‘lovesong’ felt horribly flat for Adele before she ended on the high of a massive vocal in ‘someone like you’ I have also Unfortunately seen Adele live which is always in the back of my mind.. and not for the right reasons, she sounded terrible and really put me off her so that may have had a slight influence on the scoring. I’m going to go best song- ‘Rolling in the deep’ Worst song- ‘Lovesong’ Overall 6/10
Hop hop Isn’t normally my thing but this album was just a few guys having some fun and making people smile- it certainly made me smile. It also made me ponder those questions. How many feathers on a Purdue chicken? I reckon about 350k How many fibres intwined on a shreddy? I reckon about 600. What does something mean.. I can’t even make it out slowed down… so I have no flipping idea 😂 How many times did the Batmobile catch a flag? No idea it caught flags- I’ll say 2 🤔 Anyway whilst I was thinking about those the album had finished and contestants had zero idea in the answers too.. But super fun. Fave song- change in speak. (Just beating ‘me, myself and I’) Least fave- description Fun feel good album but not all to my tastes so 7/10
Not really my thing at all- vocals on point however throughout the album. It took a couple of songs for me to get going and to appreciate the album after the not great and dare I say it but it sounded slightly racist ‘run Charlie run’ I mean telling Charlie and Jonny as well I think it was to run away from the niggas would not be allowed these days! The storytelling in ‘papa was a rolling stone’ a highlight along with ‘the first time ever I saw your face’ Overall the album just was a lot meh though. Best song- ‘the fist time ever I saw your face’ Worst song- ‘mother nature’ Disappointing. 4/10
What a rollercoaster of an album this is! The guitars! The drums! The unique vocals… WOW just WOW. Never have I heard an album that can compare to this and that’s why this album has to be on this list. It’s maybe a couple of tracks too much and I could very much do without the screaming vocals personally however mixed in not just between songs but during songs like they are the tempo was changing constantly and not in a bad way. This album has made me very much feel like I should see this band live too. Best song- ‘sugar’ - just beating ‘suggestion’ and ‘know’ Worst song- ‘P.L.U.C.K’ Overall and for all my love of hearing this twice in a row I cannot however give it a 10 as it’s not perfect for the reasons above so I’m going to give it a very solid 9/10
‘Blowing in the wind’ A lovely campfire feel. Which track 2 keeps up with. ‘Masters of war’ sounds like an epic song however being critical it feels like the song is building and building but then ultimately doesn’t get there which was a massive shame. ‘Bob Dylan’s blues’ repetitive and actually really mundane which is now where the album seems to be heading and I’m only half way through. ‘Bob Dylan’s dream’ 😴 ‘Honey just allow me one more chance’ finally the tempo has picked up a bit and intrigued me again but unfortunately it’s too little too late. The album ends with yet another really good track.. Overall therefore I see 3 great tracks to start the album and 2 great tracks to end the album but everything in between I just found so mundane and repetitive which was a real shame. Fave track- ‘masters of war’ Worst track- ‘Oxford town’ The great tracks just helping the overall score to hit 6.5/10
Unfortunately every song on this album sounded like throw away indie trash apart from 2 songs in the middle Of the album that piqued a little interest- these been ‘Not if you were…’ and ‘every day should be a holiday’ It felt to me like the album was a band trying to jump On the Brit pop music takeover and they wanted to sound like oasis, unfortunately for them they fell flat completely. A terrible compilation of songs that in my opinion have no right of been in this collection. Fave track- ‘every day should be a holiday’ Worst track- could have been many but ‘good morning’ and ‘I love you’ really grated on me the most! 1.5/10
A first live album on this journey- which I’m sure if you were at the concert was a hell of an evening. I’m not entirely sure what I’ve listened to though- rock, blues, jazz, country? I guess a mixture of all 4. Vocally I wasn’t overly won over however the music itself never felt repetitive and despite a couple of the tracks been loooong.. it flowed well and the ‘jamming’ sessions were warmly recieved by my ears. Unfortunately however due to the vocals not being to my taste and the fact I actually wasn’t in the room for the concert I wasn’t fully sold on the album. For that I’m going to give it an overall 8/10 Best song- ‘in memories of Elizabeth Reed’ Worst track- ‘done somebody wrong’
The first track ‘your new cuckoo’ felt dreamy and well produced creating a positive start to the album, I then felt like the band went on an exploration expedition- almost like they were trying to mix the grunge era with pop and It flowed and worked really well even when at times the album seemed a bit too depressing! Arguably a couple of weaker tracks in the middle of the album on first listen, however on second listen they didn’t actually feel weak. ‘Ironman’ I felt went off track and didn’t feel Like it fitted on the album and the last track also lost gumption. Dreamy, depressing grudgey pop.. but I enjoyed it! 8.5/10 Best track- ‘losers’ although could easily have been 3 or 4 others. Worst track- ‘iron man’
What a truly exceptional album from Start to finish. ‘Baba O’Riley’ setting the tone for everything this album is, great vocals, great drums, great guitars! And arguably the best opening song on an album so far on this 1001 journey! The album never lets up and is hit after hit, everything on point with every song. My favourite song however has to be ‘behind blue eyes’ so haunting and beautiful. The first perfect album of hopefully many in this collection. 10/10 Fave song- ‘behind blue eyes’ Worst song- diffficult however the one song I struggled with as it followed Baba so has to be on that basis unfortunately ‘bargain’
What a random collection of tracks. I wasn’t a fan of the native tracks which was a shame and the ‘in the jungle’ track didn’t have the right feels for me. However the ‘house of the rising sun’ track sounded great and then the album took a rather weird twist a couple tracks later with ‘the naughty little flea’ really picked my ears up it was fun. As was the next track ‘one more dance’ the bloke laughing about the husband on his death bed was crazy especially when he lost control after his death 🤯 The album then went down the native churchy feel Route with a sprinkling of love. The crackling on the tracks showed how good her voice was as clearly nothing there to enhance her. No denying she would have been a superstar back in the day but just wasn’t for me I’m afraid to say. Best track- ‘house of the rising sun’ Worst track- ‘olilililili’ 5/10
The album started well for the first 20 seconds- a great indie sound, guitar, bass and drums sounding tight and then… the vocal and the lyrics. Something about the voice has always put me off Kings of Leon and listening through this entire album I suppose I got use to it eventually but it’s not my favourite. If the band had a different song writer and vocalist I’m sure I would love the band so much more! Favourite track- ‘the bucket’ getting the nod possibly due to the fat I had heard it before and resonated with it that little better. I suppose of the rest I did quite enjoy ‘pistol of fire’ for a moment 😂 Worst track- ‘taper Jean girl’ Just above average 6/10
Finally an album where I actually felt as though I was back in time and among the elite! Vocally absolutely on point. However the hard changes between tracks made the album not flow (I know sign of the times) and at times the album didn’t resonate with me and there was a notable difference between some of the stronger tracks and the rest of the album. Easy quick fire listening however but unfortunately not one I’ll think oh I need to go listen to Dusty. Favourite track- ‘son of a preacher man’ Worst track- ‘no easy way down’ 7/10
Arguably the best opening song on an album from the 90s. ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ had it all and there was just no way the album could stay at that level of epic. ‘Sonnet’ keeps standards very high but unfortunately the album just can’t keep churning out hits. ‘The drugs don’t work’ fires another one out at track 4 however there is then a massive amount of filler before ‘Lucky man’ piques the interest again. The great songs are great- which makes the filler seem average however I enjoyed it and it was better than average. So it has to score 8.5/10 for me. Favourite song- ‘bittersweet symphony’ Worst song- ‘the rolling people’ it just sat in the wrong place between 2 awesome tracks.
Do you ever get the feeling somebodies taking the absolute piss. Well the fact this album is on this list is doing exactly that- the best thing about it is the deceptive name- I almost want D’angelo to be a superstar DJ because anything would be better than this. Best track- ‘lady’ Worst track- ‘Jonz in my bonz’ 0.5/10
Although the album felt ‘flung’ together and didn’t really flow there is some really solid tracks on this album amongst a couple of fillers. ‘Five years’ is an absolute tune and by far the best track on the album. ‘Moonage daydream’ ‘ziggy stardust’ and ‘suffragette city’ also absolutely brilliant tracks. ‘Starman’ on the other hand feels really overrated as the popular song off the album and I didn’t enjoy, I also wasn’t keen on ‘soul love’ either. But no denying what an absolute legend. Favourite track- ‘five years’ Worst track- ‘starman’ Solid solid album though 8/10
Not my cup of tea however I was strangely pulled in to the lyrics and how soulful the album felt- at times it felt like the songs could have been wrote and sung in the 50s and at times it felt like it could have been made last week. To me that made the album feel timeless even if it wasn’t for my tastes. Fave track- ‘old time lovin’ Worst track- ‘Judy’ 7/10
I felt quite let down with this album compared to the first Van Halen album on the list. The feel just wasn’t quite right- I just couldn’t quite put my finger on why. Some good tracks though- ‘jump’ ‘drop dead legs’ and ‘girl gone bad’ the highlights for me. Favourite track ‘jump’ Worst track- ‘Panama’ Average at best 😕 6/10
The third David Bowie album I’ve been given in this journey and a notable difference this time around instantly is that unlike the last 2 albums in which I loved the opening track- on this album I didn’t enjoy ‘ station to station’ at all. After that the album was a joy to listen to- the man was a genius! Face track- ‘golden years ‘ however ‘wild is the wind’ can feel hard done to by been an album closer and should have been the album title and opening song! Worst track- ‘station to station’ 8.5-10
A beautifully dreamy, extremely well produced album. I was Taken to a place of tranquility from the ‘intro’ into ‘vcr’ and beyond. The album flowed superbly and gave goosebumps throughout. A very well deserved 9.5/10 for me! Fave track- ‘VCR’ Worst track- ‘stars’ maybe a weaker ending to the album. But only due to the consistently high standard the rest of the album set.
An album that’s took 4 times listening from the start due to forgetting which track was which for a review. The album is certainly a mixed bag of what feels like fun fast paced guitar heavy hits and then slower trying to be more serious tracks. The one thing that keeps bugging me throughout though is that I want more all the time like there is something just not quite there. ‘Brass in pocket’ obviously a smash but it felt like it should have sat amongst the tracks ‘precious’ ‘the phone call’ ‘tattooed liver boy’ and ‘the wait’ which are all bangers. Amongst the average tracks there was still nice stuff but it didn’t feel as good as that guitar heavy start. Fave song- ‘tattooed lover boys’ Worst track- ‘private life’ Just wanted a little more and the heavy tracks to keep coming but I enjoyed 8/10
I was not expecting to like this but it was so good. A female rap/hip hop artist just sounds better than a male artist- even though the tracks all follow the same theme and so much of it is about sex. I was thinking what would Jay Z think about this album and 2 tracks later he pops up as a featured artist! I was thinking about the tracks about sex and how it’s the same as male rappers and then we have an interlude explaining her thoughts. The production was on point- the featured artists worked so well on the album and I was disappointed when it came to the end. Fave track- ‘work it’ or possibly ‘slide’ which was superb. Worst track- ‘the intro’ 8.5/10
The album hits all the right notes and makes all the right connections with me. ‘The youth’ made me look down to see if Arcade Fire had started playing. ‘4th dimensional translation’ made me think I was listening to David Bowie. And the album was strong throughout. I didn’t realise the radio version of ‘time to pretend’ was so different to the album version 😳 On the downside a few songs outstayed their welcome- ‘kids’ especially felt like it could Easily have been 90 seconds shorter. Fave track- ‘the youth’ Worst track- ‘pieces of what’ Overall score a massively strong 8.5/10
I didn’t think I had ever listened to The sisters of mercy until track one kicked in and ‘Dominion’ in its creepy way is sung and memories of my dad listening to the song came back from my childhood. Listening going to pick up friends who had been in a car crash made the albums haunting sound seem quite apt and ‘Lucretia my reflection’ and ‘Neverland’ were highlights for me. Not the greatest album but the memories it brought back were great. Best track- ‘Dominion’ Worst track- ‘flood II’ I mean they should have just been it both flood songs as one track imo. Overall not the greatest very middle of the road but the memories it brought back pushes the score up to a respectable 7/10
Half a dozen times I have started this album and got so far through. But every time I come back to it I start at the beginning trying to work out if I enjoy it or not. It’s easy listening and the Indian feels to certain tracks along with the cowboy vibes really brings it to life in a weird it shouldn’t work but it does kind of way. Fave track- ‘waltz of the new moon’ Worst track- ‘three is a green crown’ Decent album 7/10
What an extrodinary album this was. I had no idea I knew so many songs off it when I pressed play! ‘Perfect day’ sounded amazing, ‘walk on the wild side’ too. ‘Make up’ so catchy and just drew me in just as ‘satellite of love’ and ‘wagon wheel’ did too. It wasn’t until the last track ‘goodnight ladies’ came around that I felt disappointment in a track. Absolutely solid album for me bar that ending but that doesn’t take the score down at all 10/10 from me. Fave track- ‘perfect day’ but if I had to go for one I hadn’t heard before then ‘makeup’ was right up there! Worst track goodnight ladies’ Once again… 10/10 🥰
My fourth or fifth time trying to listen to this and it finally clicked! It bounced all over my cab and I fell in love with it! What I don’t understand is the hip hop and rap types aiming most of their music about sex, but this worked and I was bobbing along. The production was on point, I can only imagine how many layers there is to putting this album together. One thing that gave it a bonus over other albums like this on the list is the ability to showcase their talents without having to do those stupid intros every few songs so that was nice. Best track- I absolutely loved the blatant not caring what anybody thought about what they were writing and rapping about in ‘infamous date rape’ Worst track- ‘skypager’ I didn’t need to hear a pager noise in a track 😂 Surprised myself here but 9/10
‘Big exit’ turned out to be a weak opening track as the album got so much better (for a bit) after that initial track which felt flat and forced. After that the album had 5 or 6 great melodic rousing tracks including the two with Thom Yorke on. Unfortunately there were 4/5 tracks that went back to a basic boring, nothing special state of mind, a shame as the makings of a great album were there. I really enjoyed the tracks ‘you said something’ ‘this mess were in’ ‘one line’ and ‘this is love’ however my favourite track was - ‘good fortune’ Worst track - ‘kamikaze’ in the end. Overall felt so mediocre by the end but it did have those great tracks mixed in so a slightly above average 6/10.
After the opening 2 tracks I was expecting an album I would enjoy however the album just felt meh throughout. Not a lot more to say which is a shame. Fave track- ‘race for the prize’ Worst track- unfortunately lots of contenders but I suppose if you are going to put a track on the album with no vocal then musically it should be special and ‘sleeping in the roof’ was far from being any type of unique. Very underwhelming 2/10
The album passed me by without me feeling the need to look down and think what’s this track- apart from ‘you haven’t done nothing’ which i checked the title out for the pure reason of thinking… is this not the same song different vocals as one of his other songs! Apart from that the best thing on the album was the saxophone coming in during the last track which already sounded ‘ok!’ Best track- ‘please don’t go’ Worst track- could have been a few but ‘heaven is 10 zillion light years away’ grated me near the start. Another disappointing listen on this 1001 journey. 1.5/10
What a rousing upbeat set of tracks this album is despite the story lines in them… absolutely crazy what this man has done here. The upbeat tempos, the fact you have to tap along is a given and the clear precise vocal and story telling prowess is out of this world. ‘Cocaine blues’ is an absolute masterpiece! Was there a mistake in ‘the wall’ who cares!! Think I’m going to go listen to the 60 track deluxe album now… Best track- I keep heading back to ‘cocaine blues’ but it could have been any! Worst track- ‘the long blank veil’ didn’t have the same feel as the rest. 10/10 and best album on this journey so far!
Ok so I listened to the album twice, first listen I just didn’t get it- it bounced all over the place and was a lot of noise.. Second listen however the noise did seem to grow on me and I heard the layer upon layer of sound that had been put together, however it still just wasn’t my thing- Best track- ‘leave this off your fuckin charts’ (less vocal) although I quite like 66.6 too. Worst track- ‘brothers gonna work it out’ Average 5/10
Love love love. Songs to tap along to and I even caught myself singing along. All the grandmas would be on the dancefloor for sure with these track. ‘A girl like you’ giving temptations vibes and then ‘Find somebody’ gave me massive stone roses vibes but it sounded even better than them.. Loved The Spanish twist on ‘sueno’ ‘Grooving’ then giving three tops vibes. Every track surprising and the band clearly not afraid to try new things- The music sounding on point too. I loved it! Best track- ‘find somebody’ Worst track- ‘I don’t love you anymore’ Straight onto a second listen already and half way through again… That must mean it’s hit the right notes with me! Not perfect though. 9.5/10
I thought I was rating a Goldfrapp album yet every song says & Will Gregory… who is Will and why is he not important enough for the album cover yet important enough to be listed on every track.. strange one! Anyway the album played and it was just like background noise- nothing stood out, nothing grabbed my attention enough to make me take note apart from 2 tracks which were ‘a & e’ and ‘cologne cerrone Houdini’ The album felt pleasant in the background music type of way- almost like an on hold track. Not a lot more to say. Best track ‘A&E’ Worst track- ‘caravan girl’ simply for following the best to tracks and not been as good! 6/10
Big sound, solid vocals and a mixture of country with rock- especially in the toe tapping good ‘gimme three steps’ and then to top it off an absolute class power ballad in ‘free bird’ It packed something but I can’t quite put my finger on what! Overall though a Solid album. Best track- ‘gimme three steps’ Worst track- ‘poison whiskey’ Solid 7/10
Strong start to the album and some heavy sound mixed with a decent vocal. The lyrics leave a lot to be desired but some decent catchy tracks with ‘hotel yorba’ ‘fell in love with a girl’ and ‘I think I smell a rat’ Some absolute unnecessary crap too though - ‘little room’ and 3/4 of ‘the union forever’ as well as ‘aluminium’ and every song after that massively not needed. The stand out track in the album though was easily ‘we’re going to be friends’ felt such a chilled laid back track and was so easy to listen to and put a smile on my face. Best track- ‘we’re going to be friends’ Worst track- ‘little room’ Solid album despite the filler crap. 6.5/10
A young lady with an exceptionally good voice which pulled on all the emotions. The tracks felt as though she meant what she was singing and so all the meaning was there for me to feel those real emotions even the tracks that were about mundane things. I do hope she wrote the lyrics herself- it felt like she had! Not something I would rush to listen to again but enjoyable in the moment. Best track- ‘wonder woman’ or maybe ‘rainbow’ Worst track- ‘golden hour’ 7.5/10
Wow Wow Wow The album sounded like a pirate going on a round the world exploration and in every port he would write another track and out would come the magic of each and every track. Such a raspy voice but lyrically just so real, every word ‘grunted’ with meaning and passion and every story coming to life through my headphones. I spent hours listening to this album over and over along with other music by Tom too- I am definitely a new fan! Fave track- hard to pick however ‘in the neighbourhood’ was top top quality! Worst track- ‘rain birds’ purely because I missed Toms voice 😬 10/10
Something about this kept making me want more. The bass especially really pulling me in when he was bending those strings. The three of them making some exceptional music throughout. My only complaint would be - how nice would it have been if a vocalist went on top of a couple of the tracks..? Maybe it would have took away from them but it may also have added that final dimension. Fave track- ‘my man’s gone now’ Worst track- none really but at a push ‘Alice in wonderland take 2’ 8/10
It appears they are actually more than a bunch of chancers with paint on their face in spandex! The album very much reminded me of Queens more fun tracks and I reckon Kiss would have been really fun to see live! ‘God of thunder’ really showcasing the best of the band I reckon but my favourite track was actually ‘flaming youth’ I wasn’t keen on the repetition in ‘shout it out loud! And then the ballad of the album I guess in ‘Beth’ just didn’t seem to go with the album. ‘Rock and roll party’ was not needed either- if they wanted it on the album it should have been the Enterlude so to speak. The album ending with an alternate ‘Sweet pain’ was a better version than the one in middle of the album too! Favourite track- ‘flaming youth’ Worst track- ‘rock and roll party’ I guess as it just wasn’t actually anything 🤷♂️ Decent but not amazing. 7/10
Wow this doesn’t slow down does it!?! “They’re coming through your window- they’re coming through the door” This album sure is!! Would love to know how many times she spells her name throughout the album… crazy! And can’t get the chitty chitty bang bang noise out my head after the track ‘Bucky done gun’ But I love it! ‘Dash the curry’ seemed unnecessary 🤷♂️ Anyway Jay Z and Kanye need to listen to this album and learn a thing or too as this is how a rap album should bounce sound and feel! Best track- ‘10 dollar’ (shame she’s looking for a Yorkshire banker and not a Yorkshire farmer 😂’ Worst track- ‘dash the curry’ Feel like I’ve just completed a workout! Very solid 8/10
No denying the opening track hits like a freight train- however if he was such a good artist why does he need to keep going back to that formula for so many tracks on the album. It ended up feeling repetitive even though the tracks were good and there were some great tracks in between the ones that felt like ‘born to run’ mark II. ‘Downbound train’ and ‘I’m on fire’ as well as ‘dancing in the dark’ all getting turned up. I’m just not entirely sure what all the fuss is about personally and I’ll probably get hate for that but I guess that’s the power of music. Best track- ‘I’m on fire’ Worst track- ‘I’m going down’ 7/10 Ok so a refresh and this is a first on this journey- I have listened to the album again this morning and it’s hit that little differently and I whacked it up a few notches and actually maybe I misjudged based on the feeling of repetition and therefore after second listen I’m Going to bump up the score to 8.5/10
70 minutes of pure magic!! It doesn’t matter that the vocals are not perfect because the sound of the album is exquisitely perfect. The hit singles are perfectly placed among the album making sure there is no lull at all. I don’t want to name check tracks as there are so many I love but the experimental ‘the whale’ I mean the fact I could picture in my head a couple of whales in the sea in love whilst listening just shows the power this band has. Just like ‘jungle’ takes you into the middle of the Amazon. Fave track- as to be ‘mr blue sky’ however strong calls for many more especially ‘Wild West hero’ just missing out! Least fave track- ‘starlight’ for me I’m afraid but it was hard to pick one! 10/10 for me !
Well this was a surprise. An excellent surprise at that. Not a poor track among this country feeling album and the brilliance of it makes me question why Gene isn’t mentioned among some other top singer songwriters of his time. ‘Silver raven’ an exceptional track but the moving ‘strength of strings’ taking the album up some notches. Before the absolutely incredible track ‘true one’ kicks in. I can not name a worst track as I just don’t have one and picking a best was hard but for me ‘true one’ I played over and over. A masterpiece that I just can’t seem to fathom why I have never heard of it nor Gene which is a real shame and the reason this 1001 is a real eye opener. 9.5/10 just not quite to the standards of perfection but bloody close!
I am a massive fan of a live album, unfortunately however not of this one. From start to finish it felt like the band were literally playing for themselves and it didn’t feel like it was for the fans. The banter between tracks even felt like an in joke between the band members and what on earth was the trying to justify the track ‘a quick one’ If I was a fan of the Who I would have been so disappointed to have been at this gig, even the ‘my generation’ mix, just give us the best song properly and then do some jamming etc but no not even enough of that to keep me satisfied. Disappointed 4/10 Best track- ‘magic bus’ Worst track- ‘a quick one’
By the end of the album the same beat, the same 3 chords and the screeching voice just took its toll and I had enough. Along the way there were some treats- ‘you outta know’ ‘ hand in my pocket’ ‘head over feet’ and the brilliant ‘ironic’ but far too much filler. Bang average 5/10 Best track- ‘ironic’ Worst track- ‘Mary Jane’
Twice I’ve listened to this album now trying to fathom the main reason it’s on this list- maybe it’s the risqué album cover?!? Anyway it’s not bad but not great either. ‘The thrill of it all’ sounds decent as do a lot of the songs musically, I enjoyed ‘prairie rose’ too. unfortunately vocally and lyrically it’s not for me. I was bored and the album blended into one big sound. Best track- ‘the thrill of it all’ Worst track- ‘Casanova’ 5/10 middle of the road.
My second attempt at listening and I’m just confused. ‘The colour of the fire’ - I mean is this some brain takeover stuff or what… the weird ‘I love you’ it was like being hypnotised!! ‘Aquarius’ baby crying a woman saying numbers and a bloke calling out orange… come on man… why the fuck is this album on the 1001 albums to listen to I keep asking myself... but at the same time musically it’s different and it grabs the attention at times. Not sure I would ever come back to it but I fully appreciate what I listened to at times- just slightly confused as to what that actually was though! Best track- ‘roygbiv’ Worst track- ‘ Aquarius’ 7.5/10
How is this considered an album that needs to be listened to- I mean one decent track in ‘Ms. Jackson’ but that was it and I’ve heard that track a hundred times or more before and never thought it’s mind blowing enough for me to go listen to more OutKast and this album did nothing to change my mind. Best track- ‘Ms. Jackson’ Worst track- the interludes… and there were quite a few of them. In fact the fact they lasted seconds arguably was better than the minutes I had to endure on some of the tracks! Poor 1/10
Unfortunately I had my phone in my pocket whilst this album played, it however didn’t make me take it out at any point to get the title of a good or bad track. They were all just ‘meh’ Nothing special, but pleasant enough easy listening. No best or worst tracks for the above reasons and a very average 5/10.
So back to YouTube for my second Neil Young album. After the disappointment of the first I wasn’t holding out much hope. I played the first few songs whilst not feeling like it was getting my full attention… (planes and trains to blame for that !) Anyway I hit restart and fully immersed myself and my god what a treat it was. This album is up there with the perfection of Simon and a Garfunkel, Jonny Cash and David Bowies albums I’ve had on this journey. The story telling is sublime, the voice which on his album Harvest I could not get to grips with I suddenly fell in love with and every track was a treat. ‘After the gold rush’ ‘only love..’ and ‘southern man’ were a great trio but as the album got deeper even the latter tracks grew as good if not better, ‘birds’ was brilliant as was ‘when you dance’ and also ‘wonderin’ This album was the Neil young I expected with the first time I heard harvest and I’m going in for a second listen now! Fave track- tough but the title track is a killer track. Least fave- ‘till the morning comes’ I could have lived without. 10/10
44 minutes of jazz.. I mean after 5 minutes it all felt the same and I couldn’t tell a difference in the tracks. I knew the album had finished after another jazz track played and I thought wow he’s mixed it up finally only to find out when looking that was because it was a different artist!! Is he talented - yes. Was I bored after half a track- yes Would I listen again - no No best or worst- all felt the same. 2/10
No matter how loud I turned it up it just never got loud enough- almost like despite thinking it would sound loud it never actually! A few of the tracks on the album brought back memories of my dad playing them when I was younger. But honestly the voice isn’t great although the sound does help make it easier to listen to. The use of the computer voice at times worked and at other times I’m not sure it did. Personal highlights included ‘the beautiful people’ ‘Cryptor child’ ‘mister superstar’ ‘Antichrist superstar’ but my personal favorite was the slower quieter ballad almost of ‘man that you fear’ A shame that the album followed this and ended with the worst track on the album with ‘untitled’ I mean was it really needed 🤷♂️ Overall I enjoyed I just wish I could have played it louder! 7.5/10
It felt like I was on hold for a hour. At times it was pleasant until the pace picked up. Every now and then I would receive an applause for not hanging up yet! Talented - yes. But was it for me- no I’m afraid. 2/10
A decent start to the album with a track that is one of my rugby teams chants! However after that the tracks sound like they’ve been made in the bedroom By a couple of teenagers. A couple of ok tracks but nothing to shout about in the form of ‘I just don’t know what to do’ ‘the air near my fingers’ ‘girl You have no faith in medicine’ and ‘it’s true that we live one another’ was interesting! ‘Little acorns’ was all about the story at the beginning… But who told these two that they were good at making music 🤷♂️ Best track- ‘the air near my fingers’ Worst track- ‘you’ve got her in your pocket’ Slightly above Average 6/10
This album sounded very out there. The things that were put together on this album were something else- At times it felt disjointed but at other times it felt like a masterpiece, I was never quite sure which way I actually fully felt about the album. The interludes flowed into the tracks well and the little earworms that bounced all over the album I can’t decide if they irritated me or whether I loved them! ‘Thought at work’ interlude especially I found genius. Best track- ‘rolling with heat’ is the one that stands out! Worst track- ‘!!!!!!’ I’m still undecided on if I liked or not but right now I’m edging towards like. So a 7.5/10 for me!
Well this was a suprise. Like going on a safari in my ears. The African vocals mixed together with the beautiful guitar and tribal drums. The vocals got a little preachy as the album went on however that was probably due to the fact I didn’t have a clue what was been said! However the music never stopped being lovely to listen too- even when it seemed to go a bit off topic of Africa and head towards Asia for a little while. And the album was probably 20 minutes too long overall too. Certainly an album that proves why this journey was started. Fave track- ‘Ko wone mayo’ I think. Worst track- ‘kettodee’ I think 😂😂 8/10
Every track made me think of Toy Story. I particularly enjoyed the image of Woody and Buzz in Birmingham at the Bull ring! Or when Woody met the president, or was a redneck or even when he got back on his feet again!! You get the picture! The fact I could picture stories in my head to the tracks must be a good thing though right? Best track- ‘back on my feet again’ Worst track- ‘every man a king’ Solid 8/10
These songs have not aged well, and my god are so depressing… I just couldn’t get into the album enough to enjoy it despite not actually hating it. Therefore Average 5/10 Beat track- ‘on the sunny side of the street’ Worst track- ‘September song’
Maybe they should have started with the last track- ‘in a Gadda da Vida’ then they could have missed out the trying to be like the Beatles of tracks 1 and 2 and the weird section of what sounded like an attempt at getting towards a German heavy metal group! Not very often an album gets better as it goes in but this one certainly does! Best track- ‘in a gadda’ Worst track- ‘most anything you want’ Last track saved it 6/10
Another album that unfortunately didn’t hit the high notes for me- a lot of just ‘meh’ on the album. ‘Funtime’ ‘baby’ and ‘dum dum boys’ standing out a little more than the others before a poor poor track to end in ‘mass production’ Below average 4/10 Best track - ‘baby’ Worst track- ‘mass production’
The bbc is responsible for bringing a lot of shit stuff to the radio and this is right up there at the top of that list right now. I have decided I am not a fan of public enemy period. Worst track- almost all Of them! Best track ‘bring the noise instrumental’ 0.5/10
I could tell when it was Dolly singing as I actually enjoyed the album when she was. Not entirely sure why an album was made by these 3 and I care not enough to go and find out why I’m afraid. I did find one track outstanding in ‘wildflowers’ The rest were easy listening apart from I didn’t enjoy ‘rosewood casket’ I found that to grate personally on me. Easy listening album with 1 super track. 6/10
Did all early 00s indie bands really sound the same? I spent the entire album wondering if I had heard of these before but came to the conclusion I hadn’t and it was just a hybrid of other bands I have listened to for example the likes of Elbow and Snow Patrol amongst others. The album passed by easily and musically had moments of great and some moments of meh but other all was just very generic of the era. Favourite song - ‘liquid bird’ Worst track- ‘wonderful’ Generic- however what I enjoy and my era of getting into music so sounded like a lot of what I enjoy- 8.5/10
Which a well put together set of tracks that despite never hearing I felt at home with instantly. Favourite track - both different but struggling to choose between ‘Dancing choose’ which was a bouncey and toe tapping smash but also for me the hauntingly beautiful ‘family tree’ was sublime. I think ‘family tree’ just takes it today. It gave me massive Courteeners vibes too. DLZ- weakest track dogs lost its lead and the band are running out of ideas imo and the last track follows suit to, a real shame that the album petered out two tracks short of the finish. I absolutely loved it though and will be returning! 9/10
I quite enjoyed the opening two tracks- ‘More than a feeling’ and ‘piece of mind’ I felt like I was American, had big hair, a massive moustache and lived in the early 80s… Unfortunately part way through track 3 I realised I have and am none of those things! Disappointed Best track- ‘peace of mind’ Worst track- ‘let me take you home tonight’ 3/10
If ever there was an album that made me know anybody could make an album this was it! Even me in my tractor or Jon in his uni room in Bradford could make an album if this managed to get released and into the this list. I didn’t hate it and once I came to terms with the fact I needed to take it with a pinch of salt and treat it like a joke album it made me smile at times. I mean who gets away with singing about green and red apples, boring books and sucking on nipples- along with burping on a track and dropping the cunt word on another. A list of British things putting Upton Park and Yorkshire puds next to each other. I mean it was cheesy, thrown together chaos but I did enjoy it. Favourite track- ‘Englands glory’ and/or ‘Billericay Dickie’ I quite found out the biggest smile on me 😅 Worst track- ‘tell the children’ 6/10
A decent start with some heavy bass and catchy tracks however.. My god the second half of the album felt so generic and bland, like a band going through the motions but putting out a safe easy album. I listened twice thinking I was missing something what with the band being global megastars but this wasn’t a global megastar album at all. Decent first half bumps up to just above average 6/10 Best track- ‘scar tissue’ Worst track- ‘purple stain’
Well I made it to the end- I certainly won’t make it back to the start. A quick google tells me the act sold 200k albums… I bet of those nobody listened to the album twice! Worst album so far on this journey and I can’t imagine one been this bad again. 0/10
A great opener with the catchy synth heavy ‘quiet life’ sets the tone towards a very atmospheric and indie feeling album that I started wondering why I had never heard of them. That of course upon googling afterwards what year they released this album is because they were years before I thought the album sounded! Therefore pioneering their work and I hear the sound they produced in many 90s and 00s bands. Certainly right up my street and one I will listen to again. Very good 8.5/10 Best track- ‘quiet life’ Worst track ‘all Tomorrows parties’
After the few albums we have already had that felt like they should have sounded like this but didn’t, this took things to a new level- the samples were sublime, the sound was quality and all I could imagine whilst listening was Bumblebee playing the radio and using all these snippets to create this album. Absolutely loved it and it needs to get added to Amazon music so I can get some of it on my playlists. Can’t comment on face or worst tracks as I played it and couldn’t look- but the fact it all seamlessly flowed and played twice without me realising was enough for me to realise no bad tracks. 9/10
This album felt really dated at times. I mean does a man really need a maid? Would a harmonica get away with being on an album these days? The tracks are lovely don’t get me wrong. But that’s all they are and I was expecting so much more. Of course the adverts on YouTube don’t help with the flow either. Just bang average when I was expecting something Phil Collins/David Bowie like I suppose. Best track- ‘heart of gold’ Worst track- ‘Alabama’ 5/10
First 4 tracks I was feeling the vibe, enjoying the little snippets of music but together in layers behind these lyrics but after ‘scooby snacks’ I just found the tracks to lose substance and feeling. It suddenly felt like the album was rushed or they had no decent ideas left. A shame after such a positive start. Fave track- ‘scooby snacks’ Worst track- ‘bombing the L’ Average overall 5/10
Heart says a solid 10/10 as my 17 year old self loved the album and I had the pleasure of seeing the album played in full a couple of years ago at Wembley. The album starts relentlessly and the drums, bass and guitar along with the solid vocal chanting out causing a euphoric atmosphere really drumming home why I love the album, the production on point and the seamless change of tracks really works. Every track even with the political line running through it can be forgiven. The Irish feel to some of the tracks and the constant natural joining in with the singing and chanting makes it such a great album. The two ballads are top notch amongst the rock opera that’s on show. My heart said 10/10 and so does my head despite the obvious flaws, I don’t care about the flaws as the good outweighs the bad. Best track- so hard to pick. ‘Holiday/Boulevard’ ‘Jesus of suburbia’ ‘Wake me up’ All in with a chance but today I’ll go with ‘are we the waiting/St Jimmy’ Worst track- ‘give me novacaine’ although once ‘she’s a rebel’ hits in I don’t care I’ve heard it! 10/10 (probably should be 8/10 but I don’t care!)
What’s not to love here. (See below 😬) An absolute classic. The title track ‘bridge over troubled water’ and ‘the boxer’ are both absolute masterpieces but not far behind them ‘el condor pasa’ and ‘the only living boy in NYC’ the upbeat ‘Cecilia’ bringing different joy and the unlikely eulogy to ‘Frank’ giving even more different feels. It was perfect all the way until ‘bye bye love’ why they thought to put the live version on the album I’m unsure- they will have had their reasons but for me it didn’t sit right and then the last track ‘song for the asking’ also passed me by however the tracks before it were that good it keeps its perfect score of 10/10 Best track- tough one to choose but I’ll go for ‘the boxer’ today! Worst track- ‘bye bye baby’
Track one hits in and it never feels like track one stops! Just a generic sounding glam rock era band with nothing imaginative at all going on in the music or the lyrics- I mean just smashing a cymbal at one point and expecting it to sound good?!? Also what’s with all the random spellings like they are expecting the English language to be reinvented by them and take off. I even listened to the expanded edition so one glimmer at the end was the snippet of come on feel the noise! So disappointing. Best track- the snippet of ‘come on feel the noise’ on track 17.. I know a kop out so let’s say ‘track 1-17’ Worst track- also tracks 1-17 There’s been worse on this journey, just! 2/10
Hard to have a true reflection of how the album flows when I’ve had to listen on YouTube and got adverts after every track. One of the main bug bares of doing this list. Anyway I couldn’t help but think of an album I previously listened to on this list and hearing the similarities. That band being ‘Hole’ however Hole felt far superior from memory and this just didn’t feel edgy enough as an album, yes female grundgy punk vocals were nice, yes the riffs were nice but it just lacked something- maybe I can blame the YouTube quality for that missing feature. Anyway- not as good as Hole so for that score a point less than Hole got. 7/10 Fave track- ‘soul solidier’ Worst track- ‘rabbits dying’
An album made by a white dude who appears to hate everything and everyone. His hate really comes through like a steam train. However amongst all the anger and homophobia there is without doubt a talented man. He makes every featured artist sound shit and stands out above the crowd. ‘Stan’ is without doubt an absolute genius track. ‘The kids’, ‘criminal’ , ‘the way I am’ ‘drug ballad’ and ‘Marshall Mather’s’ all sound great too. However this childish angry man keeps rearing its head amongst the great tracks which is a massive shame. Undoubtedly talented and for an album that isn’t my usual liking and something I actively avoided as a teenager I actually enjoyed on the whole. Best track- ‘Stan’ which in itself is a 10/10. Worst track- ‘ fuck you’ Childish, immature and unnecessary. 7/10
Kraftwerk. Opening track starts and this album just sounds simple and mundane. From ‘the robots’ to ‘metropolis’ just sounds the same with a different words. ‘The model’ gives us a bit more variety and more of a vocal. Then ‘neon lights’ kicks in and the sound just seems to have been upped a level, the track really hitting new boundaries it seems, a beautiful piece of music that flows and evokes emotions and is a real pleasure to listen too. Before ‘the man machine’ drops back down to a mundane level. All that been said if I was in 1978 and heard this album for the first time it would just be wild to comprehend what I was listening to. Untrabox, dead or alive, human league etc etc obviously took notes from Kraftwerk as young ones though! Best track- ‘neon lights’ a 10/10 track. Worst track- ‘the man machine’ 7.5/10 but really difficult to work out how to score!
Like one mass jam session. The lyrics are forgettable and most of the time not needed especially the white man rap, as I’m just listening to the music. Which bounces all over the place and feels like layer upon layer of quality instrument playing especially the bass which was slapping all over the place! Best track- Only one track that actually had decent vocals to accompany the music and that was ‘under the bridge’ possibly a couple Of others could have been classed as ok. Worst track- ‘they’re red hot’ I mean what even was that- made the band come across like a shit parody band. I also disliked ‘suck my kiss’ I enjoyed the music side slightly more than I disliked so just like with the first RHCP on this list I’ve reviewed it scores the same at 6/10
Better than a few albums I’ve heard on this journey so far! Noisy, chaotic, downright bonkers and screaming that I imagine made Hitler sound like a sweet man. But something about it made me slightly enjoy it. Yes there were many times I wondered what the hell I was listening to but at other times I just enjoyed the ride. Best track- ‘jet’m’ is one I remember- think there may have been an organ somewhere 🫤 Worst track- ‘negativ nein’ sounded like an angry German drowning! Weirdly enjoyed but also hated so down the middle 5/10
As with most Bowie albums an indifferent opening track which then moves onto ‘Aladdin sane’ with its absolutely chaotic piano playing and thrown together feeling. ‘Drive in Saturday’ next and this is without doubt a 10/10 track as are ‘cracked actor’ and ‘time’ ‘Panic in Detroit’ not for me. ‘Prettiest star’ so catchy and absolutely brilliant, exactly how David should be remembered! ‘Let’s spend the night together’ was all over the place! ‘Jean genie’ catchy and again just Bowies sound all over it! The album then finishes with a whimper. I’ve listened to this 4 times now trying to score it and that’s why I had to break down individually as the album just feels thrown together with limited flow, but I suppose that seems to be the Bowie way. Best track- could be any of a few but I’ll go with ‘time’ which I loved. Worst track- the album ender, ‘lady grinning soul’ Due to having so many 10/10 tracks among some carnage it has to get a 9/10 I’ve decided!
Proof that once you have the name you can put anything out and people will buy it. A mundane collection of pop songs that if it wasn’t for the name would have dissapeared into the abyss. Far too much auto tune and nothing special to report at all. In fact the main thing to report is the war against crime that is the cover of ‘American pie’ how she got away with that again proves a name means everything. Bang average pop record. Best track- ‘don’t tell me’ Worst track- ‘paradise (not for me) Unless we include ‘American pie’ and then it speaks for itself!! 5/10 average then -1 for the cover! So 4/10
Unpopular opinion but I actually found ‘sledgehammer’ not to be the best track on the album, but I fully accept that is my personal opinion and not universal, yes it was good but so were ‘Red rain’ ‘this is the picture’ and ‘that voice again’ they are all very good tracks however two tracks on the album are absolutely sublime in my opinion. ‘Don’t give up’ which also features and I hope I’m not wrong as I’ve not checked but I think it’s Kate Bush… if not she still Sounds spectacular! and ‘in your eyes’ *** Wasn’t a fan of ‘we do what we’re told’ or ‘big time’ Will certainly be listening again. Worst track- ‘we do what we’re told’ Best track- toss up between ‘don’t give up’ and ‘ in your eyes’ probably the latter today. Probably the former tomorrow! 9/10 just lost marks due to the 2 tracks I wasn’t keen on.
If the idea of this supergroup was to create an album that would send you to sleep then they have hit the brief perfectly! Musically very good at times. However Damon’s voice just drones on and on. I will not be listening again and I’m pretty sure if a track ever appeared in the background I would not even notice it and it would stay unnoticeable. Not for me. Best track- ‘northern whale’ for the music not the voice! Worst track- ‘the title track seemed to go on forever 😵💫 All for the background music 4/10
Is a rock band suppose to send you to sleep? As I’m pretty sure I could have to this drivel to start with. I got to track 7 ‘how to handle a rope’ before I finally felt like we had a track worthy of a rock band and as soon as that finished it was like a lightbulb moment in the band (unless I just came round to the idea of what sound they wanted to make!) As before that track It felt to me like a band not knowing who they are, are they trying to be a soundgarden/pearl jam or do they want to be Nirvana? Unfortunately they are stuck between the two and it sounded terribly boring until that half way point and then the sound started making more sense to me. Although not in a way which made me really enjoy it. It still just felt average. Fave track- ‘how to handle a rope’ Worst track- ‘regular John’ 5/10 and that’s maybe a little to generous. I’m off for another listen later to see if that needs an edit.
Another rap intro/ woman giving birth FFS Things done boring and shit Gimme the loot sounded ok they bounced off each other but then ruined it by coughing up shit ay the end. Machine gun funk repetitive shit Warning shit Ready to die shit One more chance - voicemail messages he’s clearly a dick 🤣 Fuck me- thought I’d flicked Pornhub on 🥵 Juicy- that told the teachers 😂 WTF is happening at the end of respect… BJ action maybe? Suicidal thoughts- wanting to go to heaven to get his dick sucked.. Can’t even be arsed to put it into a review, I’m off to have a wank to one of the tracks instead! 😂 Best track- ‘gimme the loot’ Worst track- ‘one more chance’ I won’t be giving this album another chance! 1.5 .5 of that for the album- the other 1 for the sexual action 🤣
‘Variations on a theme’ starts the album on soft and soulful route. ‘Smiling phases then has some great sax, nice vocals and good breakdowns When it got round to ‘And when I die’ it felt like a collection of showtimes hitting me one after the other. ‘Spinning wheel’ and ‘you made me so very happy’ went down well. Just felt like the album was a bit all over the place. The crowd for the 2 live tracks seemed too polite, almost like they should have been on the tables dancing and bouncing away tapping their feet! Fave track- ‘and when I die’ Least fave- ‘the 2 live tracks’ 6/10 I could listen again easily but I wouldn’t actively choose to.
Almost one consecutive jazz track. I mean I didn’t love it nor did I hate it. It had snippets of dark undertone and some jazzy breakdowns. I appreciate but I won’t be back. 5/10
I knew the minute I heard those funky beats kick in from the off I would love this album… but… Track 1 the title track was awesome, fun, funky and off the scale cool rocking. Certainly gave rock album vibes. ‘Can you get to that’ was cool- the bass player on point in this track. However the album then seemed to just turn into an album of ok for me. Rattling out 4 super fast ‘filler’ tracks. ‘Wars of Armageddon’ the sound affects that were added were just weird and it felt so meh- cats fighting, cows mooing, farts. Just weird and didn’t actually help the track in any way. Best track - ‘maggot brain’ Worst track- ‘hit it and quit it’ Overall nothing massively special and certainly not something I would choose to listen to again apart from the first two tracks, although they do take up a massive chunk of the album so therefore 6.5/10
Of course when this album came out in 2002 and I was a 15 year old male I watched the diirty music video multiple times! But I never listened to any more apart from the odd track on the radio. I was expecting this album to just be ‘another pop album’ however, the issues raised in some of the tracks are quite poignant and especially on ‘I’m ok’ it gives you an outlook on life of others that make you step back and open your eyes. The albums intro which is normally a bug bear actually explains and demonstrates what and why this album is. The spoken outtro at the end of the last track though… not needed. The album is 77 minutes … that is tooooo long.. however if you stripped (see what I did there?!?) it back to 45/50 minutes this would make an unbelievable pop record, Christina’s voice is sublime, many of the tracks are superb, the mix of r and b added into the mix adds something without trying too hard. The singles I’ve heard on the radio spread nicely among the album and if I could remove 5/6 tracks as I say it would make this album even better. Fave track- ‘Beautiful’ and ‘the voice within’ showcased the voice best so both of them. Worst track- obviously the intro was in contention but infinite job, ‘keep On singing my song’ was a weak ending to the album and the spoken outtro on the end again unneeded- it’s a shame a rejig a removal of a few tracks and ending with ‘the voice within’ would have been perfect! Very impressed actually 8/10
I suppose soft rock can be their genre, this album reminded me very much of The Eagles. Catchy pop lyrics amongst an array of guitar riffs and jazzy bass to keep the majority of people happy. It does sound very 70s however it feels like it’s stood the test of time! I enjoyed it for all the above reasons but the main reason probably being that I’m a dad of almost 40 and in my opinion this album is the epitome of dad music! Best track- ‘do it again’ purely just for the absolute banging bass just beating ‘reeling in the years’ actually can I pick both please as listening again I can’t decide between them both 😅 Worst track- I honestly didn’t have one. Trying to find a reason to mark it down but honestly I can’t think of a reason too. So it has to score 10/10
On hold music at its finest. Nice enough to be catchy and keep you just there and not hang up but not good enough to make you immerse yourself into it enough to have a bop along. First 5 tracks decent enough but then declines as the album goes on. Best track- ‘fall at your feet’ Although ‘weather with you’ stood out too. Worst track- ‘there goes god’ Only Just better than average 5.5/10
Look this type of stuff is not my thing. However. If you compact track 1 and track 2 down by half then they would make ok tracks, very soulful and they would do exactly what they intend. Track 3 I thought was great actually, but then track 4 with its 9 minute spoken intro just put a massive downer on the whole album for me. I would have rather listened to a full album by Chef offa South Park than most of this album… 😉 But As I say if it was shorter it would have been decent enough to listen to and would have scored a 6 plus an extra point for track 3 being so good. But it’s double the length it should be so I’m going to whack that score in half as well and score it 3.5 Best track- ‘one woman’ Worst track- ‘by the time I get to Phoenix’
The exact reason following this list is a great idea. I had preconceptions of slipknot, unlistenable, just noise, stupid masks, screaming men child. How wrong was I- the music was very listenable, the drums insanely good and along with the guitars every note hitting home a wall of noise. The heavier vocals I could still understand the lyrics and the softer vocals show a side of the band I was not expecting at all. I listened to the album in full twice and then handpicked my favourite tracks for a third listen I was that impressed. ‘The intro and into Gematria’ setting the tone perfectly, ‘psychosocial’ ‘dead memories’ ‘butchers hook’ and ‘snuff’ all also getting a third listen! Fave track- ‘psychosocial’ really portrays all sides of the band on this album. Least fave track- ‘sulfur’ nothing wrong with it, just the one that irritated me a little and the reason the album gets dropped marks. 9/10
I just cannot stand Damon’s voice, no matter how often I try there is just something about it that does not feel ok to my ears. The guest vocalists don’t bring joy either on this album. The two singles I’ve heard before do sound ok though, Clint Eastwood and 19-2000 So a point gained there. The music however sounds tight and brings a warmth joy, I wish so much this was instrumental album as it would have scored a 9, it however does contain vocals which wipe that score in half plus the point for the singles. 5.5/10 Best track ‘19-2000’ the remix version at the end of the album also better than the original which was a jice treat. Worst track- ‘re-hash’ gave the album the worst possible start in my head.
What a start to a drink fuelled Irish tavern album track 1 was! I would love to be in an Irish bar listening to this album live, I reckon it would be an absolute blast… until I spewed up in the church anyway! I’m pretty sure Greenday will have took inspiration from this album as I hear so much of this in their music. I couldn’t help but listen to the album again and again, it was contagious and the mix of pace really making me feel like I had been on an emotional rollercoaster. ‘And the band played waltzing Mathilda’ really pulling at the heart strings differently. ‘Wild cats of Kilkenny’ just made me want to get up and jig. As much as I tried to find fault with the album as I really didn’t want to score it perfectly my 4 listens just brought nothing but delight. I am gutted my favourite track is off the expanded edition in ‘London girl’ But I will rate it as the full extended edition and still score it a 10/10. Best track- ‘the sick bed’ although possibly better lighter tone tracks this started the album in such a way that left me wanting it over and over again. ‘The gentlemen soldier unlucky to miss out too- I especially can’t stop smiling at the thought of Miss Piggy on the vocal 😂 I also think this is exactly where Greenday get their massive inspiration! Worst track- ‘the parting glass’ for been at the end and bringing such joy to a close 😢
So polarising, we all know Morrisey is a dick but there is no denying he writes decent lyrics. Along with sublime guitar work and a bass I wish was turned up a little more this is not a bad album at all. Just not sure I could listen a second time as there’s only so much of that vocal I can take in one go which brings it down. Best track- ‘what she said’ is unlucky to lose out but I’ll have to go with ‘the headmaster ritual’ Worst track- ‘well I wonder’ that rain type sound really off putting. Just needs more meat or does it.. More bass More guitar Less dick 7.5/10
