Frank Black
4/5
Before listening to this the only frame of reference I had for frank black is a line from a bloodhound gang song. But I'm glad to know more. This dude has it. Super catchy but feels like it has alot to say. And an hour flew by. Very happy listening.

The Gun Club
5/5
Bro this shit is my absolute jam. Like I'm not a big bluesy guy but mix it with the punk shit I rock alot and damn it sounds nice. Saved the whole album for relistens. I love it 5*

Jack White
3/5
Jack white outside of the stripes is one of the biggest question marks of my life. The singing is great, the riffs are sick, and I feel nothing every single time I hear his music. On paper it should be a home run but it never turns out that way. I enjoyed my time but I haven't thought about any songs on this record as soon as they are done. I'll probably never listen to this again and thats sad to me. I just dont get it and maybe thats a me problem but even if its not it doesn't change my feelings.

Daft Punk
3/5
Certified bangers on here. Always loved me some daft punk. My only real issue is this is damn near a 90 minute record. Some trimming might have helped the flow but if this is 100% your jam it's good for you. More like 80% my jam 3*

Cocteau Twins
4/5
Very interesting this little one. It feels like a slightly too upbeat version of any of the bands who play in the road house in season 3 of twin peaks the return. Its too happy even though I would be shocked if it was happy lyrically.i didn't end up saving any tracks but I for sure need to listen to this again

ZZ Top
3/5
Rough and tumble type classic rock. Great start, great end. Less captivating in the middle. Still a solid album
Eagles
2/5
Albums a classic in the zietgiest, not sure if it's a classic to me. Starts strong with hotel California which speaks for itself. Then I forgot how awesome life in the fast lane is, saved for later. Then we get out of the fast lane for much of the rest of the album. Slow ballads pretty much from here on out. They may be good or even great ballads but they are not my style. It's been a long night and I don't "fucking hate the eagles man", but I don't see myself coming back to this hotel anytime soon.
Duran Duran
4/5
This record rules. It has a fun groove from end to end. The electronics and synths feel like a revolution for the time, I wasn't there at the time but it feels so new. Some classic songs make an appearance that I very much enjoy and some deeper cuts kick ass. There is a marimba on this album. Wild. Love it, will come back for more.
Gang Starr
3/5
Badass old-school flow and beats. Not a lyrics guy. Hard to follow but parts I caught were good. Good to know more than mass appeal. Give it 3.5 if I could.
Love the beat on meaning of the name
Taylor Swift
4/5
This is a funny album for me. Back when it came out I remember the sentiment was this was the end for Taylor. She went pop and people weren't happy. But I've always liked the singles and radio tracks. This album hit at a spot in my life where it was ever present and I liked that. I was on a road trip blasting shake it off barreling down the highway and singing along. At the time idk of I listened to much more than metal. Out of the woods is the only real dud in the track list. That one gets an instant skip from now on but everything else is wonderful. I like singer songwriter Taylor more but pop Taylor has a place in my heart
The Black Crowes
2/5
Fine but not interesting at all. Hard to handle has real words in it? Wild
Linkin Park
4/5
Middle school days. This album rules. It's the best Linkin Park. It's been memed to death but that just shows its massive appeal to even newer generations. The b sides also kick ass. Meteora also is good but I'll take hybrid any day. This may be the quintessential rap rock album. Thanks boys
Talking Heads
3/5
I like this album. It's a very soiled output from the heads. I do happen to be a remain in light junkie though. What an end to this album. Take me to the river brings back billy bass memories. And big country is just so good. Maybe when I'm in a head type mood I'll throw this one on to mix it up a bit.
Mariah Carey
1/5
Come on man. This album blows. I had this whole thing typed out and thought I'd soften up a bit but no. I don't like the vocal runs that litter every inch of the track list. She just cant stop with these God damn scales. And her voice sometimes has this little boy quality that I loathe. I will never come back to this. I do have a never ending hatred for her Christmas bullshit but maybe that was just cause that holiday sucks. No it's her 100%. Hate it. Congrats Mariah you get to be my 1st one star.
Eels
3/5
This one is pretty good. I think starting off with novocaine for the soul is nice. Sets up what the hell I'm gonna listen to cause with this site you never really know what your gonna get. I liked Susan's house but I was so focused on where else I've heard that sample that I don't know how much I paid attention to it. And oooo baby when beautiful monster came on I was screaming "SHREKKKKK SHREKKKK" over and over again. Guest list may be my favorite song on here. Overall a pretty solid album. Saving a few tracks for later listens
Beck
2/5
Hmmm I knew beck had this in him but an entire album? Was not expecting that. It's a nice listen. I'm not blown away or anything. It was good background noise. I like the wilder beck to come. Give me some devils haircut, and looser over this.
Thundercat
4/5
This one is just fun. Bass led, funky as hell, and just good. Thundercat may be the biggest nerd I've heard in this lame. Maybe making him less cool on a wider scale but I'd chill with him lol. Black nerd to rival ghost dog. Saving for later for sure
Public Enemy
3/5
Classic. I love the flow and delivery on this. Just smacks u in the ass. Aldo I thought Flav was just a hype man but he spits some bars too. Sick. Bring the noise with anthrax is so insane to me. Turned out great. It's like when run dmc dropped a track with Aerosmith but 100000% cooler.
The Smiths
4/5
Excuse me? Today? The queen is dead?
Orbital
2/5
Had on shuffle, didn't mean to. Lost interest. Decent stuff but beep boops don't hold my attention all that well
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
4/5
Hard album to find cause I guess it's not on any streaming but thanks to illegal YouTube uploads I got it. This album is so very good. It feels like it's like a crowd of 10 or 15 people just sitting around listening to this musical traveler. He's got songs from all over and he's just the voice passing them on. Excellent all around
Steely Dan
2/5
Pretty forgettable. Like it's fine but I'll never put it on again. I can't think of anything else but Jackson tucker and his sweatpants though
Genesis
2/5
Pretty forgettable. Like it's fine but I'll never put it on again. I can't think of anything else but Jackson tucker and his sweatpants though. Woulda been a 1 but there are some premium synth tones on a few songs
The Go-Go's
4/5
This was a fun one. I like the all women vocals. Just too much fun. It's hard to rate. Is it a low 4 star or a high 3. I enjoyed it either way
Emmylou Harris
3/5
This was pretty good. I was a bit disappointed though. This 70s country singer thing is usually my type but not so much this. I did like it though
Prince
4/5
Prince feels like he's in 99 on this one. Decades above and beyond his competition. Funky as fuck and fun. There is a reason Prince is goated. The mfer just says all the ny critics just love him. Ballsy as a new artist. But like draining threes against Charley Murphy this is a swish
Kraftwerk
5/5
OK so I'm dumb. For the longest time I thought kraftwerk was that shitty joke from the eric Andre show. But that's kraft punk. I'm smart. But this album is amazing. It's so ahead of its time it isn't even funny. I will save this one for now and check out the whole kraftwerk catalog.
Bob Dylan
3/5
It's Dylan. What else is there to say?
David Holmes
2/5
This was OK. Nothing to special in my opinion. I was interested was interested in the little talky bits that intro and outro songs more than the songs themselves. I'd like his movie scores in that context probably.
Dolly Parton
3/5
3 titans of their respective genres. What a mix. Maybe too slow for my taste at times but great nonetheless
George Michael
2/5
I thought this would put me in a gyrocopic sex mood but not really honestly a little underwhelming. Maybe it needs another listen but not up to the fuck snuff.
System Of A Down
4/5
Classic. But toxicity is better sorry. Still love rocking like a middle schooler
Derek & The Dominos
3/5
Very nice. I like this better than most clapton solo junk. Solid
The Stone Roses
2/5
This one is OK. It sounds ahead of its time but if u put them in time with those later 90s alt rockers it sounds kinda generic. Some good grooves but idk if that saves it.
Norah Jones
3/5
Nice and smooth. Not super hype on it but it's nice enough. That opener is such an absolute riot I have to bump it up a star
Miles Davis
4/5
Dat kewl m8
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
Stephen Stills
2/5
Too long. I gave up after 17 tracks. Made it longer than I thought I would but not particularly memorable for me. It's fine enough music just not for me I guess
Fun Lovin' Criminals
4/5
This had lots of good elements and some kinda eh ones. Scooby snacks was a gem to find. I like finding something I know sometimes. Good beats when they aren't too honky and even those are interesting at least. I love the keys all over this though. Some remind me of the doors who I love and some have a persona 5 thing. Ik jazzy music does not equal p5 but still. It brings me back to a really good time in life. High 3 star but I'll round up this time. Quality
Beyoncé
2/5
On so I'm for sure not in the majority with this one but damn I don't get Beyonce. She has a nice voice but nothing else has any kind of appeal for me. It's just too popcorn nothingness. The music's good she's good but as a whole it's so unmemorable. I skipped the bonus material but the og album had nothing I could recall and I finished 2 minutes ago. It's not bad but I won't hit up the queen bee unless she has another one on here. Bye Felicia 2*
Portishead
4/5
Now this one was good. Chill and beautiful I saved multiple songs and the album as a whole. That's says alot. I'll be happy to hear these songs popping up on shuffle. I've always heard I should try these guys but never got around to it. Glad this made me. Worth it all around. I love her voice. 4*
The Streets
3/5
Now this one was good. Chill and beautiful I saved multiple songs and the album as a whole. That's says alot. I'll be happy to hear these songs popping up on shuffle. I've always heard I should try these guys but never got around to it. Glad this made me. Worth it all around. I love her voice. 4*
Iron Maiden
2/5
Amazing riffs but horrendous vocals. It's classic but damn do I hate it. 2*
Nirvana
5/5
This is an all timer. My aunt showed me this when I was young and I've never forgotten it. I think I like most of the songs here rather than their studio versions. Those get old these do not. Idk if I've given a 5 star yet but this is one for sure. 5*
Leonard Cohen
3/5
It's nice. I like Leonard's voice. My issues are my own. As a prolific non lyrics guy this is missing a huge piece. It's all on me obviously. With songs this skeletal its hard when that peice isn't my cup of tea. Good stuff spock, who I may have thought this man was as a child lol. 3*
Megadeth
2/5
Another one. Same thoughts as maiden. Great riffs but shit singer. Amd I like off beat singers. People who aren't the norm is my jam but no Thanks. Oldschoolers you hit it but not for me 2*
Sly & The Family Stone
3/5
Funky goodness but maybe a bit too primitive for my tastes. I would have loved it had I known nothing of that scene but knowing what comes later kinda takes away from the accomplishment this is. I'll rate it a hit higher than because of that. 3*
Aerosmith
1/5
I'm going in with a bad taste in my mouth cause I truely hate Steven Tyler's voice. Just loathe it. I was truly hoping to find some enjoyment in the instrumentals but even in that front Aerosmith totally drops thr ball. Everything is so simple and that hurts this record. Mixed with the overproduction it's just a recipe for some of the worst music I've heard in a while. Even with some all time classics like sweet emotion, and walk this way I still have zero interest in ever revisiting anything off this record. I hate it 1*
2/5
I wad hoping for a but more out of this one. I wanted some Spanish vocals to be more of thw focus. It's alright though. Repetitive but nit bad sonicly.i liked it and saved a song so there's that 2.5* if I could but I'll probably have to give it a 2* sadly
Arctic Monkeys
3/5
I'm not super well versed in the article mokneys catalog but with ny limited knowledge I would say this is just as catchy and nice as anything that hit the charts. But the other edge to that is it does not feel like they have grown or evolved at all either. Amd that bothers me. In 20 years there should be some decent change. Not saying you have to leave yr old fans behind but take them on a journey with you. More meta things aside I can't deny its a good listen. 3*
Beatles
5/5
Come on now. I gotta do the white album? It's such an important album for music as a whole. Like damn. It's got history. It's got bops. It's infinitely interesting. What else would anyone want? And it's not cause I'm "supposed" to like it. The Beatles in general have always been a part of my life. It's some of the first music I remember hearing and loving. Thanks family for that one. It's a 5 easy. It's a 5 for sure
John Lennon
3/5
OK so I was worried it would be a bit too much yoko. She's interesting but her whelps and screeches aren't all that pleasing. But this was nice. It pales in comparison to the white album i had last night but still very good. Nothing too crazy but solid little tunes all over this thing. Minimal and not too over produced. Just a nice singer songwriter record. It also has an atmos mastering so I listened to that which is nice. Not too many atmos versions of anything out there. A nice and enjoyable 3*
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
3/5
Very interesting. I was not expecting this at all. Nice multi phased compositions. Always had Mr on my toes. It made me feel very anxious and on the verge of fear on my very dark nighttime walk. But also very happy at points. Wide range on this one. But I liked it 3*
The Gun Club
5/5
Bro this shit is my absolute jam. Like I'm not a big bluesy guy but mix it with the punk shit I rock alot and damn it sounds nice. Saved the whole album for relistens. I love it 5*
Motörhead
4/5
Whoa Nelly! Moorhead rules. 12 tracks that just blow by. Shits fast and rocks. There isn't much more to ask for. Riffs are there. Lemmys vocals are rough but damn they fit so nice. 4*
Scissor Sisters
3/5
Dancing the night away. At least half. The dancier the tracks are the better they are. The more indie/rocky they are the less interesting they are. Give me a thumping backbeat and those sick falsetto vocals amd I'm very happy. The normal singing is less cool by far. Those tracks feel pretty standard. Some great bass grooves as well. I'd give a 3.5 if I could but too much is middling to round up here 3*
Daft Punk
3/5
Certified bangers on here. Always loved me some daft punk. My only real issue is this is damn near a 90 minute record. Some trimming might have helped the flow but if this is 100% your jam it's good for you. More like 80% my jam 3*
Amy Winehouse
4/5
With no disrespect, how was this popular? It's so old school. Who was asking for lunge music in the early 00s? It blows my mind. But I love it. I never thought this would be something I'd ever list3n to but damn I'm glad I did. I saved the album and like 6 tracks. What a gem. I know Amy as a jok3 from shitty spoof movies of the 00s. Wild. This is 4*
Kraftwerk
3/5
So this one is a bit off for me. I like it but I'm I think I might like Trans- Europe Express more. This is Trim. It's has nothing more than you need but I might need just a touch more. Like 1 more song. Very classic very kraft. Some good vocals here and there. Good beep. Good boop. 3*
Tim Buckley
2/5
This just isn't my style. It's good don't get me wrong. That mallet increment is honestly one of th3 best sounding I've 3ver heard. With a mix of the soft gentle acoustic guitar it's heavenly. But it does not connect with me personally. I'd love to give it a middle of the road 2.5 vut I have to round down to a 2*
The Damned
4/5
I'm a bit biased here with pretty much anything punk. This is great. I love how classic it sounds yet how far ahead at the same time. I saved a bunch of tracks and the whole album. Lots of variety and it blazes past. I love this shit

After a long hiatus back to these albums. This was the last recommendation a year or more ago when I stopped looking at this site. And it was a pretty nice welcome. I liked what they were putting down. But at the same time it wasn't mind blowing or reality altering. Just a solid listen. Only 1 save for later with "Fall at Your Feet". And I don't even love ballads vmbut this one is good. Thanks 1001 for the rec, glad to be back. 3/5 ☆s
Garbage
4/5
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
2/5
So this isn't my speed. But it's good. The arrangements are all nice and they really use every ounce of the vocal ability that everyone in the group has. That being said it's too one note. If you are someone who is endlessly fascinated with the human voice this will be dense material. For me though, it's too much of one thing no matter how good it technically is. Not bad but no saves and I'll probably never hear this again in my life.
50 Cent
3/5
50 is early to mid 2000s in my mind. And get rich is 50. It's damn good. The beats couldn't be more classic. But it's not my favorite. I like it but don't love. It's hard with a straight 5 stars. It's better than a 3 but it's not a 4 either. Gotta go 3 sadly. Apologies to the whole G-Unit
Killing Joke
4/5
This was a surprise. Thought I was getting some black sludge metal music with this but presently surprised to be exactly what I'm into. This album is like a stop gap between punk and new wave. It's sick. Couple of nice little savey saves and an album that will stick in rotation for a good while here. I like
Jethro Tull
3/5
Not really my style but pretty good. I can't deny the flute. Makes me think jazz flute in anchorman. Some bops and bangs. Good wholesome missionary classic rock.
Fugees
4/5
Bop and a half. Tons of classics and Mrs. Lauren kills it. I didn't know dick about wyclef but I sure as shit am gonna find out. It's just that facial song from thugger. But good stuff. For sure gonna re listen for a whole while here
Dion
1/5
This is not me. It's my mom. And nothing against her musical taste but I've had quite enough soft rock/easy listening/ whatever it is is not for me. These songs could all be the 2nd song played over the credits of a film that was a solid 3/10. No thank you. Glad it's out there but it didn't land in this camp
Cat Stevens
2/5
This is a weird one. There are some things I liked. And specific things that bug me. The biggest is whoever produced this made the layered vocals the uhh double vocals are so unbelievably distracting. Idk what it is but none of those sections with aggressive layered vocals are done in a way like how everyone else does it. It sounds just bad alot of the times. The songwriting is nice and wild world is a banger but not too into it but not 100% against it
Dwight Yoakam
4/5
As a former "I listen to all music....except country" type person this is the jam. It's exactly the kind of country I like. It does get a bit too preachy at times. Maybe not preachy but the rely on God thing isn't my thing so it's just a bit awkward. But the songs man. There are some good old fashioned honky tonk badonkadonk type guitar shit on there. That one solo where he ends ok harmonics on home of the blues is insane. The oompa oompa polka type Hispanic music I don't know the name of has some good acornian and whatever else they use. I don't think there are actually any horns on the album but my brain fills them in automatically...weird. but good. I like
Randy Newman
4/5
This is a tough one. I was not in the best headspace for this at the moment. Sleepless nights glaze you over some. But I liked what I heard. I'm also born in 94 so toy story has told me I must like randy Newman more than anyone else. So I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. It's good. Also that song from the opening of major league is here too. And as a wisonsinite loosing our beloved Bob uecker it was a trip. I like this. But I need to re listen for sure.
Guns N' Roses
3/5
This brings me back to middle school. Man... some of these songs were on guitar hero so they were all I wanted at 13 or whatever. My tastes are not the same but I can help liking it even if it's 95% nostalgia. It's gotta get 3 just cause.
The Band
2/5
Damn, I'm gonna feel kinda bad for this one. Its just boring to me. There isn't too many musical ideas that stand out in any way. It's just a few little guitar embellishments or even a little bass lick but it just ends there for me. Nothing wrong with the vocals but again there isn't enough interesting in the way he delivers his lyrics. I'll have to figure out what to give it. A one is kinda harsh but a 2 is almost giving it too much credit. Man.... Its not unlistenable it's just too blah nothing for me. Jawbone is alright. but alright isn't too high a bar to set. 2*
John Lennon
3/5
My parents are the Beatles generation. They passed it on. I've been a Beatles fan as long as I've been alive, not that long, but still. It's always been Lennon, Harrison, McCartney, and sorry Ringo. But in recent years things have shifted. John lost his spot. But enough about anything but the album. It's very nice with a handful of amazing songs. No yoko being too much. Just simple little songs. Not the best but pretty good.
Wu-Tang Clan
5/5
The Staten island slaughters. A stone cold classic. That midsection of the record is just one of the greatest hip hop songs of all time just back to back to back ect. It's wild. The production is so great. Every beat is the quintessential ny 90s sound. It's insane. Then just a handful of the best to ever do it just laying bar after bar down like it ain't nothing. I just can't believe it.
George Harrison
5/5
Well what a coincidence, I just got imagine 2 days ago and I liked it hut I brought this up cause I like it more. And I sure do like it more. Why didn't the Beatles use more of geroges songs? They are sooo good. I saved damn near every track on the first disc. And half on the 2nd. And I like the 3rd. It's all jams but jams are nice. Such a great writer and his steel guitar sound is nice. Some country vibes on some songs but that's cause it's the only place people use it anymore. I like everything about it. I get why some people wouldn't and that's fine but it feels like it was made for me.
4/5
I did not not see this one coming. Everyone knows kick our the jams from some movie or TV though I can place which one. It's loud it's wild it's in your face. It's kick ass and doesn't give a shit about much else beyond that. I'm a big punk guy so seeing it's first little baby steps or at least the first moments of existence. Cool cool cool love it
Yes
3/5
I had a decent time with fragile. It's lo5s of great musical ideas but sometimes it's just too much changing to get in the real grove. It's progressive and I do like progressive stuff it's just not 100% my thing. I will say roundabout may be one of the most perfect songs ever written so u got that yes. Good damn job. Joo reference or whatever
The Specials
3/5
Oo the specials. Just s nice listen. I used to be big into ska, 3rd wave, but I think wayyyy back Pandora used to throw on some specials too. I've never listened to this one. Was more into the 1st album tbh. More is a good time though. Not saving a bunch of songs but I'll throw the whole album on again for sure. Some little dub electronics beeping and boopin like clu clu land or some shit. I enjoy
Kate Bush
4/5
Hey it's the stranger things song. That show is sooook epic. Nahhhh I'm being a Lil silly. Running up that hill is great though. I didn't save any of the tracks other than that one but I already had it saved. Sound like I didn't like it huh? But no I did like it alot. But I don't think saving single songs does it any favors. It's a whole peice. I got sure will listen to the whole record multiple times. Very good.
Laura Nyro
3/5
This sadly didn't really connect with me. There isn't anything wrong with it. I enjoy how dynamic and ever changing these songs are. They flow nice. Laura has a beautiful voice that reminds me alot of Laura marling who i like quite a bit. I can't explain it but it just didn't hit. It is very far from bad though.
Super Furry Animals
2/5
Maybe if I was British I would enjoy this more. Just nothing. Give me song 2 over and over again please. I should listen to blur
Jurassic 5
4/5
What absolute variety. This has so many moving parts. Bunch of rappers in the group to begin with and a decent crop of features too. Every beat is fire. Idk this is way better than expected
Jazmine Sullivan
2/5
I'm not a lyrics guy so you could theoretically make a song that's catchy enough about assaulting my mother and I would be none the wiser. But when u put spoken word sections about being one of the worst people I've heard about in a minute it's hard to miss. This lady sucks dude. I understand hurt people hurt people but Jesus she just blows. At least it's honest but I really do not like her. Musically it's fine, maybe even good at times. I like r&b as much as the next guy, not my everyday listen type shit but I like summer walker. She's a good singer technically, even if she has a lower register than I find all that appealing, she can go on runs with the best of them. I was excited to see what more modern stuff this 1001 thing would give me but if it's like this I'll temper my expectations a bit next time
Beth Orton
3/5
Just a solid singer songwriter record. Nothing too crazy but I enjoyed my time with central reservation got a couple of saved tracks. Nice and simple
Sisters Of Mercy
4/5
I'm not very well versed I'm this goth rock thing but I might have to be. This was killer. Feels very ahead of it's time until some synths come in but it all adds to the charm. This is so solid. Give me the cure next I guess. Saved a few songs and will for sure spin the whole record again. I really liked the corrosion but it's 9 minutes long. Otherwise that would have been another save. I just want to do peanuts dances to this in all the black clothes I own
Lorde
5/5
I cannot be objective about this one. This was a very important album for me. It was the ahha moment where the light bulb blinks on the first time over your head. It's like seeing a slight of hand magic trick when the magican pulls out that queen of Hearts from a moment ago. When I was younger I hated 2 things, country and pop. And this was the opening of a whole new world for me. Pop music is wonderful In it's own little way. It's beauty in simplicity. I love this album. It has moments of riding high on love and companionship and low moments where you just curl up and wait for it all to pass. And it's a "dumb" pop album. I love every second of it. Not perfect but perfectly imperfect. This is one of the good ones.
Brian Eno
2/5
I'm a gan of the talking heads but nit too sure who brian eno is, in my head he makes movie soundtracks. After a quick search he seems like an interesting guy. But I don't like his music. I just need some more structure here. There are great grooves and little ideas that sound very heads but they sit in the amorphous blob of ambient nothing. It's just not what I'm looking for I guess. I just need more than what is here. Maybe that's a me problem but it gets a lower score than I'd like to give it because of that
Astrud Gilberto
3/5
This is music to have in the background while your in the tropics in a cabana chilling with a good book. Away from everyone but still close enough to observe all the party and fun going on but not be bothered by it. Pretty specific but that's what I got. Just good music and good vibes. Not 100% my thing but enjoyable non the less
Leonard Cohen
2/5
This reminds me so much of Blackstar by bowie. The problem is I've had a bowie connection as long as I can remember but I just don't have that with Cohen. I've got one of his albums before but it also didn't connect with me. This isn't bad but for obvious reasons the singing isn't really that pleasant but it does get the point across. As a goodbye to all those who have been there forever this must be wonderful but I have not been here for it.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
For one of the greatest rock bands of all time they sure like to play the blues. I've always heard that they and alot of other bands from the era juts stole the blues and I finally get it. It's nothing but blues. There is track that I'm assuming zz top took. There is another track where mick jagger sounds like he's attempting to do Dylan. What a wild time where everything just flowed into and out of everything else. I'm sure today isn't any different but I don't have 50 years of progress to see it at the moment. Good nice album though. Nothing too crazy but it's solid
N.W.A.
5/5
Another classic. My dad gave me this on tape when I got my first car. It means alot to me that's for sure. It's full of top tier west coast production from greats. In my mind they wrote the book on west coast sound. Great bars on great bars from the whole crew. It's great that ice cube and Dre became pop culture icons. I wish the same could have been said for Ren yella prince and especially E. I'm sure they all did well enough but damn is nwa packed with some greats. Love it. Simple
Goldie
2/5
Yikes I'm not into this. 20 minute 1st song? That's too much. I've for sure listened to little punk rock albums that are shorter than this damn song. Its kinda the epitome of things I dislike. And that's kinda it. I will give it some props for being very dynamic. The songs flow and change and evolve constantly. I thought that would be enough but it wasn't. It's better than most in this genre but it's still not enough for me
Ray Charles
3/5
Decent time to be had here. I've never really listened to Ray Charles and I'm glad I have. The sound to my ears is relatively standard for at least what I think this era sounded like. But it's solid. Some more bumping tracks and some slow sad ones. There really is alot here. I saved a few songs but only a small percentage of the bunch. But overall good
5/5
Nothing can be said that hasn't already been said. It's the Beatles. They invented the modern framework everyone else exists in. And I love it. I do prefer Abby road and especially the white album but this is still nothing but all time classics
Neil Young
4/5
Very happy here. I've heard the radio Neil young plenty over the years and I never really got it. But now I do. I love his voice. It's very unique and they way it's layered is perfect. I got half th album saved. So much good stuff. A couple hit hits but some great more b side type stuff. It's very simple but honestly the sonics of his voice are plenty great for me
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
I was expecting more out of this one. Maybe that's just too high of expectations or just the advancement and evolution of music as time goes on, but either way it happened. I did get some saved tracks. It's just nice though. The way the 3 guys all work together and harmonize is top notch. But it's in a very simple framework. And I'm a bit hung up on that point. Still a good album but I was expecting to love it. It's a me problem for sure but I gotta give it what I gotta give it
Sabu
2/5
I wish I understood percussion more than I do now. It would ave helped here. Mostly just come banging around with some chanting vocals that's do get repatatve for me. But not bad. Just not something I'll be spinning again and again
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Just very cool. I was a bit skeptical in the first track or 2 but damn I was worried about nothing. Geat songs.
Scott Walker
1/5
Ok so I might be being too harsh with this one and I wanna lead with that. Nothing too enjoyable here. Just not my kinda thing. Big band idk whatever kinda club music from casablanca. It has a couple of weird things in random places that make it seem slightly tongue in cheek. I may be very dumb and I wouldn't blame u for thinking that but I didn't enjoy it. It's a one I think. Or maybe I should have given other stuff a one recently and I'm picking in this one but I'm rolling with it.
LCD Soundsystem
3/5
I'm not sure how to rate this one. It has alot of the dance and electronic tropes I don't like like the repetition and not having lyrics but this does these things but in a way I don't fond offensive. I'm really really not sure what to do with this. I'm Going to give it a tentative 3. I need to listen to this a bunch more times before I truly know what's up. Maybe it's the best thing I've ever listened to or the worst I'm not sure
Prefab Sprout
2/5
Strange one. It feels way ahead of it's time but I don't think that makes it good. It just feels like a nothing who cares album from 2005 instead of 1985. It's kinda interesting but I won't be returning
Neil Young
3/5
I just had an earlier Neil young and this current one had me a bit worried to be honest. The first half is very stripped back. And i wasn't down for this direction. It's fine. Not bad but also not what I was looking for either. The second half picks up what I want from a Noel young project. I like the multi track vocals and a little bit more rocking oomph. But I did enjoy my time with this once it got rolling
Lynyrd Skynyrd
3/5
Never been a skynrd kinda guy but this was decent. It had some good tracks and freebird. It's freebird. It's the song u picked in guitar hero when u learned that was supposed to be ur last song so pioc one that's 73 minutes long. Good times
Rod Stewart
1/5
Yikes
Beach House
3/5
Another not sure. I liked it generally but I'm not sure if it has staying power in my life or not yet.
k.d. lang
4/5
Choo choo now leaving the station of idk yet type reviews. This is alot. And I enjoyed it. But I'm pretty sure ill enjoy this much much much muuuuuccchhhh more in a few more listens.
Coldplay
2/5
Lmfao ok here we go. I do not like this. But it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. It's not good nor my thing at all but it's fine. Like it's not unlistenable or anything but I do not want to listen to it. It's all the same. It's big and epic of that's what u like but I do not. This is fine
Country Joe & The Fish
3/5
A little off to me. I thought this was going to be perfectly made for me. It looked all old-school psychedelic. It kinda is but not to the degree I was expecting. Still good don't get me wrong just not what I was wanting
Roni Size
2/5
Brother what is wrong with dnb jungle whoever these people are? I'm on tidal so I look to see how long the album is and it's over 5 hours longggggg.... OK it's a special edition so maybe it's bot that bad..... over 2 hours... broooooo. OK now that my whining is out of the way, this is a drum and bass thing. It does drum and bass things. Not my thing. Whatever. But this had some moments of almost being something I could see listening to but not quite. I just can't with the 3 second drum loop being nailed into my skull for 11 minutes. I appreciate some evolution. But that dumb drum beat is killing me and maybe someday it won't but for now it hurts. And by the by I have not finished the album yet and I will but the last 3 songs are not going to drastically change my mind............. it did not
3/5
It's the Beatles but a bit off. That's a bit facetious but it's kinda sorta a little bit true. I was looking for more than is here though sadly. Still enjoyable but it's not the white album of Abby road. I'll for the 100th time need to register to really get it. Maybe I won't even then but I'd like to give this another shot
Led Zeppelin
3/5
This has a reputation and I dont see it exactly rhe same way. It doesn't have as many big big songs on it minus kashmir, as I was expecting. And it's solid. Very solid. Just less flash than I would have expected. I'll spin her round again to see but not that mind blowing.
Justin Timberlake
3/5
Surprises here in the jt woods or whatever he was trying to do a few years ago. Some good pop here. Not a huge fan of his voice and inflections but the music itself is solid. Though it does oddly remind me of a bunch of different songs at points. Like mayhe I head another pop song in the way a synth is done or a guitar riff sounds like a Zelda song very strange and maybe it's nothing and just a me thing but maybe this is just a victim of the preset era. Either way it's decently good. The hits are hits for a reason and the b sides are still decent. Crazy to give it a 3 but I'm gonna
Common
3/5
Common has always been an artist who is out of place and time. He feels like if you took grandmaster flash and stuck him in a time machine and brought him like 40 years ahead. Idk, he just has this old man flow. And idk if it's the samples he uses but those also just feel older. He's not bad just not a rapper I'm ride or dying with.
Blur
4/5
Hey it's the gorillaz for the British. But actually this is real good. Keeps my attention with the slower songs. It's just amazing that they can do this on a 1st or 2nd try. Wild. I don't understand how Americans like me just decided it's just song 2. This is the song 2 band. They have sooooooo much more
The Icarus Line
2/5
I don't get it. It's like a mix of a bunch of post grunge stuff. Like sometimes I hear some white stripes, sometimes I hear some deaftones, some incubus or something but I'd always rather go to the bands I hear influence here rather than listen to this again. It's not bad but it's just boring to me
Scott Walker
2/5
Ayyy it's my ex governor. I had to look up who the hell this guy is and after a quick wiki search I think I might actually like this guys later stuff. This is still pretty early though. It's just not exciting. It doesn't do the thing I want music to do. There are a few little weird moments that make me think I'll like the Avante gaurde stuff he does later but scott 17 or whatever this one is ain't that. It's simple and not too hard to digest
The Stooges
4/5
Weird me one. As in I was weird. I'm a diabetic and was a bit low the whole short sweet little runtime. But it's good. I've heard most of it if not all of it before. It's a classic. The starting point if u have to put a definitive point on that of punk. Come on? What else do u want. It's a bit simple and that might be It's only thing but it's taking from bubblegum bullshit of the previous era. I do like bubblegum bullshit by the by. It's good. I'm happy. More punk for all please
Terence Trent D'Arby
2/5
OK I don't get it. Like there isn't that much to actually get but I don't. I just hear some like movie credits songs and some singer songwriter stuff. And that'd it. I guess I just don't understand this one it should at least be decent to me but I didn't even gel that much. Idk mannnnn
Count Basie & His Orchestra
4/5
I like jazz but I'm a super novice. I don't know much but some stuff is real nice. This is a real nice. Just fun and eclectic but not unapproachable. Honestly perfect kind for me. A million great little runs. The whole thing is great but u catch tiny peices every handful of seconds that are interesting and cool. Real nice. I'm not sure if it gets full points but it's so close if not.
Arrested Development
2/5
There is something deeply lame in this album. Somewhere down there is a Nugget of the cringe. Idk man this had very good production and not very good vocals in my opinion. The content feels very preachy and just like I'm being talked down to. Idk if I'm reading that right but that's what I felt in the moment. And it's just old. Nothing against the Olds but it's too close to hip a hop a hip and to the hop for my taste. Not it's own fault but it still is either way.
Sam Cooke
4/5
What us this? Who is Sam Cooke? A live album? What is going on? All thoughts I had when this popped up. We'll after a little teeny tiny listen i got it. It rules. I was skeptical with a live performance, how do you really distill a concert into just an audio stream? Well I think it was done here. The way he talks with he crowd and you can hear the crowd, he plays off them and it's so cool to hear on a record. And what a crop of songs? They rock. All of them but the cupid on and twisting the night away? What that song has an original author? What? It's not like some folk tune from olden days? So crazy. All the songs though are great. What a sick pick. Thank you 75 years ago and that fun night out.
Gary Numan
3/5
I went into this a little down on it. After a song or 2 I was just thinking I'd rather be listening to kraftwork but it picks up. Still has some lulls of instrumental nothing imo but it's decent. Also cars is not a song I've thought of in a long time but what a song. Good little synthy popy dohicky
ABBA
3/5
I didn't know Abba existed into the 80s but I guess this was the swan song until 2021 but damn. It's stuck between two worlds for me. Sometimes it sounds classic 70s Abba and sometimes it gets this weird 80s seeping in and it feels out of place. They still have good songs and alot of it here is good. It's just strange and off. Good writing and for them to gracefully just fade away rather than clawing for every second in the spotlight they can like alot of people. Class act that Abba. I'll have to check out their new album too
Alanis Morissette
4/5
I always mix up Alanis and Fiona apple sorry. Both good but not the same. This is great. Packed with all time greats. I couldn't belive how many hit hit hiiittts were on this. Like every other song was mega. The less popular stuff is still pretty great too. She has a very unique voice and I love it. Like for real not just is soooo unique and fun and wow omg. Not that. It's sick. It feels a bit childish at points but she was a child so it's understandable.
The Divine Comedy
2/5
It's just too subtle. Maybe if it grabbed my attention better I would care but I just don't. It's not bad it's just not good either. Sorry if this is ur favorite album 😢
Tortoise
1/5
I assumed I was not going to like this about 3 seconds in. It could have been worse cause it the cover I thought I was getting 45 minutes of whale sounds like you buy and the crystal shoppe. But it still really really sucks. There is no structure and I'm sure that's the point and they nailed that aspect but it still needs to be enjoyable to listen to or say something. I get it and I agree u can make whatever this is and be free and spirited or whatever but at the end of the day I needed breaks from a short record. Once I was 10 minutes into the 20 minute hellscape I put 1 down in my notes and I was hoping it would change but it only got worse. They would hit on an interesting musical idea but in 2 seconds were off to something that isn't interesting. Very very frustrating album.
Depeche Mode
3/5
Solid. That's kinda all I got for this. It's nice and has some hits here. Quite a few I might add but it's just not grabbing me. Give me the smiths for my sad sad days. It's good but idk if it stays in rotation
Depeche Mode
3/5
Ayyyy I must really be in a Depeche mode..... ahhhhhhhh... never-ending suffering. Anywho this is very similar to violator. Less hits but equal in quality. Also equal in me not caring too much. Good stuff but not getting spun constantly
The Rolling Stones
3/5
This is unfair to this album to be honest. I was looking forward to the new Jane Remover record and that was in my mind alot of this listen. It's still good though. Honestly better than the last album I had by them. The one with the building on the cover. Yeeee that might not go over well to the aged sorry. It's got a few bangers. But why is can't you hear me knocking like a 6373 minute song? It just falls off the rails and turns into a jam, which is fine but I don't want to hear that jam everything I press play on that one. Solid rockers that feel less bluesy than the last record.
Megadeth
2/5
There are aloy of things to like about this record and even this era as a whole. There is some good to great instrumental parts but it just feels too dated alot of the time. Things have progressed in the metal world in the last 40 years. Just feels quaint. And then my biggest sticking point... Dave Mustaine. His voice and alot of voices in the whole genre are so so terrible. They all suck. Even James Hatfield is awful, sneak peak at when they pop up. They just have the worst warbbly bullshit. I like off beat vocals alot but this is the worst. If I could give this a 2.5 idk if there is another album that I love half and hate half almost exactly. But those vocal put it down
Beatles
4/5
Da beeeeeeets. It's rubber soul. Don't we all know by now? It's the Beatles but it's not the best Beatles. It's in a weird halfway between boy band and drugs I guess. Some sachrine bullshit sometimes but Norwegian wood exists so 🤷.
Fishbone
4/5
Wow that was fun. Just pure unadulterated fun. I'm sure some lyrics are a down but I didn't hear it. All I heard was a bunch of people throwing out ideas and running with every one. It feels like everyone in the band was on EQUAL ground and if u had a suggestion everyone else would take that idea ad far as it would go. It's just nice to hear when u think about the Beatles who all hated each other. I could be totally wrong but that's how this record felt. Not every idea is worth as much time as they spend but they tried and I admire that alot. Just cool
The Residents
3/5
After 3 seconds I knew what I was getting into. It's a type of album i like BUT, ad big of a but as I can convey, I need to be in a mood for it. I like trout mask replica and this feels like an evolution of something like that. It's the late 70s early 80s version of that. It's weird it's wild and it's challenging. Not for everyone but there is alot to get out of it if u put in the work.
Judas Priest
4/5
What a sick album. Breaking the law is a perfect song. We all knew that but there's alot of other songs here too and they mostly rock. As a whole it's a little slow tempo wise for my hard rock/metal tastes but I almost didn't notice. Also the vocals are a bit too hair mentally bullshit I don't like but only a little. Guitars rip. And it just kills
Keith Jarrett
4/5
Sure does make you feel classy and cool listening to this. Like your a mysterious man bathed in shadows in the back corner of a bar, smoke rising from the cigarette slowly smoldering into the ash tray in front of you with wisps gently floating past your darkened face. I'm just a dude walking my dog around the neighborhood. So many little sections that nicely flow one to the next. And I think I read this was all off the cuff which is insane. Dude is seriously talented. Being an instrumental purely drops it ever so slightly. That's just a thing I need in music 99% of the time. And it's just piano. An hour of very good piano but it can't be more than that. Damn good stuff though
Doves
2/5
Nothing wrong here but it really didn't do anything for me. It's just early 2000s pop like rocky thing. It's just not very compelling. It's not bad but it's nothing.
M.I.A.
1/5
I'm actually surprised. Everyone knows paper planes right? It's just a part of the culture. But no one had heard the rest? Maybe that's just me. But holy shit did I hate this. On paper it sounds perfect. But none of it works for me. The weird double vocals that don't even feel synched up or even playing off each other at all. And why is the whole thing recorded on like 3 tracks? I just feel empty when I hear these beats. Like half of what is supposed to be there just isn't. She turned in her half done homework. It's just awful. Paper planes and the final track with timberland feel like the only listen able tracks here. I'm kinda bummed cause i wanted to like it but I just cannot do that
Lauryn Hill
5/5
Come onnnn what do you say? It's a masterpiece. Its beautiful in every aspect. There isn't anything left to say. Everyone should listen. And that's that
Bert Jansch
3/5
This is nice. It makes sense why it's still loved. It's not really my thing. But I know it's good. That's kinda all
Suede
3/5
This is a me problem, but I was expecting something more new wave or punk adjacent. This is full of ballads. Like they are good but it's just not my speed.
Meat Puppets
5/5
Well. I first heard of the meat puppets because it seemed like Cobain loved them. I always like following the thread of your favorite artists favorite artist. And for a time nirvana was it. But they covered plateau and lake of fire on that really nice unplugged. So I had some knowledge of who these guys were going into this. But I was blown away. It's so good. Packed with a ton of great songs and great instrumental jams. I can't usually abide those vocaless tracks but these kept my attention better than any others I've seen I'm a long time. Just tons of great riffs and melodies. Must listen for any grunge head
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Well I saved more than half the album so I think it just has to be a 5. Like half of those songs are slow songs and that's not me really. They are just too good. And the funky songs are amazing. Superstition is a perfect song. I didn't even realize it was Stevie wonder until emarissingly late. But it's just a part of the culture. It's in every animated movie from 2001 to now. But damn he can play the keys. And probably everything else. The absolute god. This is good. Listen. That is all
Robert Wyatt
3/5
A kind of interesting mess is the best I've got here. It's doesn't have a ton of structure but there are some really interesting ideas deep down in there. I'm not opposed to working for it but I don't really want to put the work in for this if you know what I mean? I do enjoy the sort of half gibberish but half English, at least enough to make it feel unsettling, lyrical thing here. After the album finished I got an auto play of Signed Curtain and I let it play just to hear anything else this guy did and he just sings this is the verse and then here is the chorus and so on just explaining his process. That's cool. So maybe I'll be excited to get another one of his on here or just go digging on my own. I was gonna give this a 2 because it's so messy but I'm so intrigued by this guy it's getting an extra point. Maybe it deserves it maybe it doesn't. We'll the final leg of the final song was great by the way. It's of the sea in the best way. I really liked that and if he's got more of that I'm so so sooo down
The War On Drugs
2/5
I'm not sure. It's fine to listen to but nothing really grabs me. I just don't feel much of anything here. Mayne in another headspace idk
R.E.M.
3/5
2nd day in a row I feel a whole lot of nothing for an album. This one I should like more for sure though. Well the 2nd to last track was very good no I guess it's more than nothing. Surprised though
Fugazi
3/5
Fugazi is a weird one. It's a band I should like but doesn't really do much for me. I liked listening to this but if I never heard it again it would be fine too. But on paper it should be one of my favorites. But it's just not
The Byrds
3/5
Some pretty nice psych type stuff and some country twang on some songs. Alot to unpack here. But i listened to it in the worst way. Kinda unfair. My right earbud died like 2songs in. Then it the left died at trck 10 or so. Then I finished the rest later. Couldn't have been worse foe this record. I'll give it a 3 for fairness of all that
Frank Black
4/5
Before listening to this the only frame of reference I had for frank black is a line from a bloodhound gang song. But I'm glad to know more. This dude has it. Super catchy but feels like it has alot to say. And an hour flew by. Very happy listening.
David Bowie
3/5
I like bowie most of the time and that's here along with all this ambient stuff. Mostly ambient bullshit. That I'm not into. But the albums namesake is good classic bowie. Just feels like he wrote 4 and a half songs and made it work for a whole album. Not my favorite but still has some good
Robert Wyatt
4/5
Comeback stories of the century. Wow. I'm happy surprised with this record. I had eno and David Byrne and I didn't like that at all. Then I had robert Wyatt just othe other day and thought how interesting the ideas he had were but couldn't get behind the structure less whatever of that album. But with you bring these two together it actually works. Eno supplies the structure Wyatt needs and Wyatt adds the vocal flair and rhe structure that Enos stuff needs. Very happy here though. Very good all around
Dr. John
3/5
Was expecting something more psychedelic or experimental. And yes some of both of those things are here but not to the degree i thought I was getting into. It's more just a slightly experimental kinda Louisiana type bluegrass type bayou music. It's pretty decent though all things considering.
Van Halen
1/5
Just not a van Halen guy ar all. I'll start with the good. Like 80% of this record was hits. They made bank I bet. And the guitar tone really is one of a kind. I do like that. But that's where my list of pros ends. The vocals suck so very much. I hate them 100%. Eruption isn't a song. It's just a solo. What is this doo wop thing they got going on a surprising number of times in 30 minutes. Also there is another pro. It's merciful lengthwise. It's just not my thing. If you love van Halen then hell yes brother sister man friend. I'm happy for you. Just don't play that shit anywhere near me.
3/5
A bit disappointed here. The first song rules and it got my expectations a hit too high. It's all very nice and listen able but a bit boring compared to the album with the dogs running on it. Feels like it's just a bit too slow and chill for my taste
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
It's fine. Nothing too cool or too bad. If I could give it a 2.5 I would but I gotta figure out if it's a 2 or a 3. Hmmm. We'll I guess it wasn't bad per say.
The Flaming Lips
3/5
Not that crazy. I appreciate that it's pretty much the indie blueprint for the last 30 years or whatever. There is a little peice of DNA in the new fortress and the walls or whatever dumb name they got. But this was nice nothing that blew my mind but the albums namesake is great. Everything else is fine
Queen
3/5
So freddy mercury is queen right? At least to me. There are other guys in the band who are probably all great musicians but it's really all about freddy at the end of the day. And it felt like he wasn't here for the 1st half of the record. Sure he was but he didn't have that power and look at me energy that he has on all the hits. Not saying every song has to be that but I was disappointed with this mostly. Some good stuff back loaded but not that good.
The Verve
2/5
Haven't heard this one before but I doo t care. Bitter-sweet symphony is a perfect song. It rules and there is nothing you can say about it. OK the rest of the tracks are fine but I don't want to listen to them again. I wasn't angry or upset I just wandered away. I couldn't stop thinking about a book im reading and not listening to the music. It's just boring. It's fine but im bored to tears
Stevie Wonder
3/5
More subdued than I expected from Stevie here. It's still good just slow. Not enough funky peices here for my tastes. But it's still a good time. Worth thr listen for sure. Just alot of slow songs
Kanye West
2/5
Fantano is right. It's not that good. And if you think it's one of the best of all time that's fine. I'll just know your in the cult. Kanye has always been a strange one to me. He's massively influential and that's where my love for him starts and ends. He is my favorite artists favorite artist and I'll always be grateful for that but I just don't like 90% of what he does. There are some brilliant moments here and there but before you know it is on some bullshit again. Like on the 2nd song why are all the vocals slathered in some shitty filter. Why do we need that? But then runaway comes on and it's a perfect song. I don't understand. And in the year of our lord 2025 I don't understand how people can still live in this cult of personality. He's not a good guy but then again I don't think any celebrity is good really anyway. But he's a mentally ill man who we point cameras at 24/7 and then laugh at the insanity. It does really suck. Kanye isn't great but Kanye is Kanye and that's kinda it.
Frank Sinatra
4/5
Well well well. If it isn't some wife beating music. Im joking but only kinda. This is music that I would see tony soprano rough up one of his girlfriends. Maybe that Russian one with the peg leg mom. But all jokes aside it's Sinatra. That's all. From the get go it's exactly what you would expect. And it's good. All around. Not really my favorite thing but i enjoyed my time pretty thoroughly.
Sepultura
5/5
Bro im 30. Im wayyyyyyy past my metal elitist phase. I don't ever listen to it anymore, though I don't have anything against it just not my go to. But damn this rocks. I've been aware of sepultura for a long time and roots bloody roots is just like a metal standard right? But damn the drums on this are too sick. They really drive the whole project. The vocals also are pretty standard but they get some chants going sometimes that I can only assume are Brazilian folk/tribal in origin. Or they could be football chants i don't know but they rule. The guitar is sluge and chunky. Not too crazy and the 4 second guitar solo on a single song was a laugh out loud moment for me. I love it.
Johnny Cash
5/5
Well this was something. Im not usually a live album guy. I like live music but a recording of a live performance just is the outer shell of what a live show is. But this is remembered as one of the best for a reason. You get little interactions with cash and the crowd. They call out numbers to go visit custody or whatever. The prisoners are yelling out at all sorts of things. How did this happen? Who set this up? What a master of planning. Wow and the songs are fun and funny alot of the time. Alot of them are about prison and getting in trouble. And when his wife comes out to duet and they go bonkers. Its fun. Just all around
Patti Smith
3/5
Pretty middling in my opinion. Im sure if I cared about lyrics this would make sense but I don't. She sings well but not well enough to keep my attention. She did do this cool thing where as she sings she pounds on her chest giving it this kinda sinchopated thing going on. Its creative and I like it alot. But at the end of the days it's just soo subtle for my tastes. Maybe if I get a few more years under my belt it would hit harder but right now it's right in the middle
Ash
3/5
We are like 60% of the way there on this one. I grew up in the pop punk era. And this is the beginnings of it being dragged out of the muck. It has that punk DNA but it's completely in the 90s here. It feels like exactly like alot of other stuff of the time but also it's own. Im not sure but it's alright. Girl from mars is funny and silly. Like a thing that a 12 year old would write but I mean so was half that stuff I liked when I was also 12. I enjoyed this but not all the way
The Waterboys
4/5
Might be the least me album i can come up with. But I kinda love it. Im not sure how many of these songs I'll be spinning for years to come but damn. They can play and sing. The fiddle is top tier. When its in the mix im happy. And when its other things im also pretty satisfied. Just a great folk cleric thing. Idk what even it is but at the end of the day I enjoyed my time here
Joni Mitchell
3/5
So I've been told this is one of the greats and it very well may be. But its just not for me. Its too subtle and too laid back in its approach. Its good but it doesn't hit that hard for me. Its not to the level I have been told about. She has a powerful voice and I appreciate that alot.
Jeru The Damaja
4/5
OK this came out the year I was born. So I've never heard this or even was slightly aware of its existence. But damn dude. Its not illmatic buuuttt its very very good. The beats are amazing the whole time. That 1st song with the reversed i think its cymbals but its so so sick. The flows all over rule in that old school way. The rapping is cleaver and good but that producer i can't get over. OK I just looked it up and its dh premier so I guess that's why its good. Damn dude imma be playing this for a bit
Lupe Fiasco
3/5
So I liked the newest lupe album. It was an enjoyable listen. And this is too. But its off rotation immediately. Its just not my style. Its too lyrical for my tastes. If I cared about that more it would get a higher score but alas I do not. A couple good beats but generally pretty middle of the road for me. Also this is just too long. And I like that it ends on a nice thank you to the hundreds of people who make things like this happen but does it need to be almost 15 minutes long? Its a nice gesture but its excessive. Pretty mid for me
Harry Nilsson
4/5
I was certain going into this it was gonna get a 3 max but I was wrong. Its pretty much pop bliss. Like I couldn't have guessed this would be anything at all. But I recognized like half or more of the tracks on this. Lime in the coconut? Wtf? That's a song somebody wrote and not just an ever present construct of the human experience? Wow just wow
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Its jimi. He plays guitar gud. What else? I mean in a way its slightly quaint at least compared to those math nerds who chug in metal but they wouldn't even exist without Hendrix. It was an experience and one worth having
The Magnetic Fields
2/5
Death by 1000 paper cuts. That's the best way to describe what I just went through. This isn't bad music. Its quite nice actually. Not exactly my style but I can get down for some amount of time. But not this amount of time. Give this man an editor, someone to tell him no. If this was like 12 tracks and maybe 45 minutes of runtime I would very easily give this a positive review but at 3 hours long its a test in patience more than an album. After 7 songs I was already fatigued. And knowing Im only 10% of the way there at that point is agonizing. I did listen to it all but I was done so fast. There are good songs probably but I could not pick them out of this police lineup of every person who ever lived. Its just insane. U have wasted my time and brother stop falling in love with every Barista u ever meet. Yes every woman is beautiful but have some damn restraint. Love isn't this and this only technically counts a music
Paul Simon
3/5
Hey its not Garfunkel. I don't know any of either of these guys stuff outside of when they worked together but I got to know some of paul Simon today. I had a good time. Saved a few songs. But I fell off in the second half and didn't care too much for its later parts. Just good pop acoustic and songwriter type stuff. Worth a listen
Run-D.M.C.
2/5
OK so i understand the the armastice type situation that walk this way did for the rock and hip hop and how cool that is. But Aerosmith fucking sucks. Steven Tyler has a horrible voice. Run dmc is better. But my problem with this era or maybe just run dmc is they start the album off rapping nursery rhymes. Like ive hear glorilla do it in a balaclava on whatever radio show that is but its a novelty. Its not anything beyond that. Like damn. OK so to the actual album is heat after song 1. Tricky and my Adidas are classics. I did so many stupid Snowboard tricks on ps2 with that song playing. But after that I just dont get anything out of it other than the aforementioned walk this way. But damn I was expecting more with how much I like those 2 tracks. Bit nothing for me after that
Emmylou Harris
2/5
This is not the 70s emmylou and I kinda find some issue with that. Its generally just feels more commercial and sterile. She's still a great singer but the instrumentals backing her are not it. Maybe that's just the times it was made in but it doesn't change my feelings about it. I was excited cause I liked peices of the sky quite a decent bit and just didn't get what I liked about that record here. Kind of a shame but its still decent just not me
Fleet Foxes
3/5
Kinda disappointed on this one. Its just too simple and boring. Like if this is your jam I bet its really your jam. Ain't mine
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Caves vocals are great but I just think the formless post punk shit sucks. Its not interesting and its always so slow and not much happens. Its just boring ballad after boring ballad. Im still going to give it a positive look but its not for me
Bob Dylan
3/5
I gave nick Cave too high of a score yesterday. Rip. This is a nice album. Its chill and nice. It sounds like the lyrics aren't but I enjoy the sonics of it. Dylans gravel smooth voice is always great if its ur thing. I enjoy a unique voice in all my music. So bobs my uncle or whatever. Its not the best Dylan record. Its not the firey 60s stuff. Its just nice.
Stereo MC's
3/5
I haven't been giving good scores recently. Not correct ones at least. I have this one some extra time. And I enjoyed my time. Its nothing too special or even something I'll spin again but its good euro pop. Nothing that probably ever did anything here in the states but it should have got some attention. The cover did have me a hit worried. Its aggressively turn of the millennium. Just a fun time
Elliott Smith
4/5
Jesus that's a sad one. Its great hut damn it hurts. Dude loved his Beatles style double vocals and it hits just like back on Abbey road. Just nice piano and acoustic guitars. But ending your last album on a song tilted "bye" is heart wrenching. Listen to it and cry
The White Stripes
4/5
Its the stripes? 7 nation army. That song that's at every sporting event ever now. Who doesn't know some of this. Jack white is a sick player and his voice fits the bluesy thing that he loves so much. But Meg white is insane. She rules. I think its not even close to the same thing without her. She uses everything she can. I love it. She even sings a teeny tiny bit on this record too. Its very good
Butthole Surfers
4/5
Pepper. The band that did pepper. I knew these guys were a little left field but nowhere near this. This is legit so ahead of its time in the mid 80s. All the pre recorded stuff playing all over the thing. Wtf is that? The chugging metal riffs. The more punk inspired stuff. This is alot of what I want. Not perfect but very very good. My only problem is in all this experimental stuff it really just leaves you with 2 songs. Maybe 3. Oh well. I loved it all the same
The La's
3/5
That "There She Goes" royalty money must be insane. Good for them if true. But its pretty good Brittish pop rock. Nothing too special other than that song that's been in all movies. But a good enough listen. I appreciate the levity. Tight 35 minutes. No wasted time. Just in and out with a good experience.
Radiohead
4/5
I've always looked at radiohead from the outside. Well im in now. And I always knew I would enjoy what they do. It met or maybe even slightly exceeded the expectations. Super super turn of the millennium. Its so hopeful for the future of sound at least. Can't speak on the lyrics but sonicly its very ahead of the times. Very spacey very ambient. Vocals are on point. Its every ever so slightly uneventful for my tastes but what a good album. And now I'll have to listen to more. Im sure half their output is on here
4/5
Pretty annoying its not on tidal. Been a while since ive had that. But after a mild wrinkle this thing hits you like a ton of bricks. That first song is amazing. Its weird and kinda experimental. Then it settles in to something that isn't like the first song. Its still very good but I do feel slightly lied to. Bearly. Its just great pop. I had a damn good time with it. I wish it was more like the the opener but very good otherwise.
Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark
3/5
New wave goth rock. I dont know the difference. Its the music that the southpark goths would do their little dance to. Good stuff though. I like the synths. Breathy vocals are good. I enjoyed. Not amazing but good and worth the listen
The Velvet Underground
5/5
Everything has been said that can be said. I have nothing new. Just listen to it. Its a classic for a reason
Tori Amos
2/5
While looking at the related artists it showed Alanis. This isn't alanis. Its good vocally but the backing band just is a boring wonder bread thing. Its just nothing most of the time. Boring as all get out. The best song on the whole record is the accapella track. She sounds great without the distractingly bland instrumentation. Not the worst thing ive ever heard but not worth playing again.
Cocteau Twins
2/5
Its some sort of post something. I dont know dude. Its listenable but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to this. It does mix it up but its not for me
The Beach Boys
4/5
Welcome everyone. Rip brian wilson. What a great crop of songs. Dude knew how to write some good music. Very very somber and very fitting 1001 album generator person. Its just good and varried. Its what you want. Its what you need. And its a nice send-off, in our time, for a brilliant music man.
Peter Gabriel
2/5
Not unlistenable but its not special on really any way. Sledgehammer is very catchy but I dont think its good. Just an ear worm. Its like any other mid 80s pop album. Doesn't stand out. Also this is probably me getting my wires crossed cause Phil Collins was also in genesis, but this is the missing music review from Patrick Bateman. This is serial killer music so long as you didn't grow up with it. Yall get a pass. Everyone else no
Frank Sinatra
4/5
I know nothing about bossanova at all, other than surfarossa from the pixies but that's not what this is. Very nice. That opener is a damn good song. I love the guest vocals as well. Kinda wanted more Spanish vocals than are here. They hit the instrumentals hard though. Sinatra is sinatra so you get what you expect. He sounds good over these chill stummed guitars. I liked this more than the one other sinatra ive heard before. Good album
The Lemonheads
4/5
This is nostalgia bait for me. I wasn't alive when this came out but it still feels like exactly like the first few years of my life. Not that I remember it at all. Just hits the feels. Good album all around. Just nice pop rock stuff. A little tiny bit of punk rock edge. Very very good stuff. Not perfect but pretty damn good.
Billy Joel
5/5
God this is damn near perfect. Its a 5 star record just listen to it. Honestly the only small small blemish I can think of is the closing track harps on the main theme or motif for a bit too long. But its perfect of its like 90 seconds shorter. Listen to this man and all his very good music. I shouldn't like this even half as much as I do but damn it I love this stuff
The Blue Nile
3/5
Site broke last night I think. So from memory I liked this a decent bit. There are some killer synths and the dumbest play well off of its tingly dingly stuff. The vocals remind me of talking heads but quite a bit more subdued. Enjoyable record
Gang Of Four
3/5
This should be exactly what I like but for some reason it didn't gel with me all that well. Its still good dont get me wrong but I didn't save any tracks and that's weird. I'll have to keep it in the vault for another day. You know sometimes your just not there for it or thinking about other shit and not giving it the time it deserves. I dont think that's what happened but maybe. Maybe the simplicity of it got me but all punk is the born from the same 4 chords. It gets a 3 but it could go higher with repeated listens
Waylon Jennings
3/5
This is the good country. Im not blown away by this record though kinda sadly. Still a good record. Tons of variety. Hits a million different notes. Slow songs. Upbeat songs. Ballads. Title honky tonk. Its just good without standing out too much
Johnny Cash
4/5
Well hurt is here and its still a wild song. Insane to turn the industrial into one of the most simple yet effective songs of all time. This whole record was great even though its mostly covers. And thats crazy. Tons of little guests all over it. And its so damn simple. I could see a guy ar a coffee shop playing almost anything on this by himself. But it just hits so hard. Great record
Jack White
Rush
3/5
What's up with prog bands making 20 minute songs that are really 3 songs on the same track? Its weird to me. But otherwise its Rush and that's good. I love Gettys voice and dude can play some bass and at the same time? I will never get over how hard that must be. All the musicianship is incredible. But its not all the compelling sadly. It was a good time but I didn't save any tracks. Its a bummer but its the way it is. Still positive but not a life changing experience
Janet Jackson
5/5
Wow. Unexpected but a banger for sure. The production is amazing. Its exactly what I would think the mid 80s sounds like. I saved a bunch of tracks just on the production alone. And Janet's voice is incredible. Although in black cat she sounds exaclty like her brother. I couldnt hear the family resemblance until then. Not a lyrics guy but it feel conscious and on the bleeding edge. Tough decision now though. Its pretty ballad heavy. Alot of slower stuff and that's not really my think but damn that production is immaculate. Its a very high 4 if I had that kind of granularity but its close enough to get full marks in my book
The Sabres Of Paradise
1/5
Actually awful. I just can never get into purely electronic dance music. Its beating a dead horse the genre. Maybe they hit the horse in the ass for a second but its still the same garbage. I have this friend who sends me edm tracks every day and ive only told him this 1000 plus times I hate this music but I still get em. Maybe im just a bastard man. That first song sounds like diarrhea. I hate it very much. And after that its an hour or the same thing over and over again. Terrible. Truly terrible
Bob Marley & The Wailers
5/5
Full of the most classic tracks of all time. The stoners backing tracks. And loved by sqaures as well. What else can you say about this? These tracks will probably live for so many more years than I could even imagine. They are all that good. My only gripe being that I guess I prefer live cuts of this group more than these studio versions. Very weird for me but some of these songs just sound a little off compared to the versions I grew up with. But thats about all I could say thats quote unquote "bad. Its a great record and you should light one for the band and relax and enjoy. Or just spin it. However you fancy
Red Hot Chili Peppers
5/5
Another classic. Im not all that into the peps these days but how can you deny this shit? Side A might be one of the strongest half of a recors of all time. Every song is a smash hit platinum banger. Its crazy. Even the less know songs are great. Porcelain was a surprise hit with me. Flea is a great bass player obviously. The guitarist who's name I'll butcher, freciante, is a great player. And the drummer who I should know wraps it all up in a little bow. Then there is keadis. That guy's lyrics show that sound is more important than substance. In the first song the Bing bong shit is insane but it works. I couldnt see peps with anyone else even though I dont really care for his style. Its a classic, listen to it
Public Image Ltd.
3/5
Interesting record. Its punky but kinda posty. I like the punk stuff. The other is neat but not my vibe. Too simple and too long. Kinda the same gripes I have with post genres in general. Cool to see the origins but im not all the enamored with it
Grizzly Bear
2/5
About as toilet plate indie music as I can think of. Its like if Coldplay was kinda cool. I just didn't get anything out of this. It happened and I just want to move on. Kinda sad cause at least if I hate something I felt some kind of emotion. I felt nothing
Fatboy Slim
3/5
Its a classic for me at least. Like even in the intro to Rockefeller skank that guy is singing it to get his point across. I feel that in my soul. But as I get older I see too many flaws in things like this. At least flaws to me. Its alot of the shit I hate in other electronic music. its repetitive but it does a better job than most mixing it up. Praise you is a sick song but do I really like it or is it nostalgic? That's where im stuck mostly. Its good but am I just thinking it's good because it was good back then? It gets a positive look but I won't be the funk soul brother anytime soon.
Steve Winwood
3/5
Hmm not sure what to do with this one. I heard some inkling of sonic the hedgehog in the album opener and some wave race 64 in another. The synths and key work are interesting. Reminds my broken gamer brain of things that make it go. But I dont know. I didn't vibe all that well with it. Kinda too poppy and edge less. But still a decent time.
Sebadoh
2/5
I half love this and half hate this. 50/50 split. The first 2 tracks are nothing who cares alt rock. Then it gets aggressive and weird for a while. It just switches back and forth a couple times between speedy growls and the most boring crap of all time. Im gonna have to give it a negative for the whiplash
Nirvana
5/5
Nevermind is nevermind. Its almost s complete no skips type album. The ender is good in spirit but not that fun to listen to. And stay away has an intro i dont like but otherwise its perfect. Im just nit picking to say something but just listen to this shit and enjoy.
Laibach
3/5
I want to start by saying how I understand that the midi horns can be a put off for some people but holy shit I love them. Its goofy as hell but it works for some unknown reason. It gives me the feeling of a kinda less intense rammstein but im fur thats just me not knowing German music at all. They do have some industrial flair to a song or two and so early in the game. Its pretty good. Not my favorite but a good time marching along to it. As a side when you remaster and album do it all or don't call it a remaster. They cut out the 3 or 4 ambient spoken word songs which to be fair are my least favorite but id still rather listen to them than not.
Morrissey
3/5
Well its mr Smiths man. I clocked it immediately. Dude has a very distinct vocal style. I had a good time with this though id probably rather listen to the smiths instead. Nothing too crazy. Just a solid new wavey alt kinda thing that does the job. Saves a few tracks for later but an ok record
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
Nothing too engaging for me here. Its alright other than the good songs being 48 minutes long. Its like the song plays for a minute then its 4 minutes of doodling around and then another minute of the actual song and back to fucking around again. It makes it really hard to keep my attention. I feel like some of these songs got edits for the radio unless ive just been unobservant my whole life which is very possible. Its OK and fine and alright
Black Flag
5/5
Easy as pie. Its a near perfect record. I got this one from a highschool friend in the 11th or 12th grade. And I played it over and over again. Rollins growly talk sing and just gutteral raw yells might be one of my favorite vocal performances of all time. I love how real and just kick your ass some songs are and sometimes you get a TV party with dudes screaming about Dallas. Its incredible. The closer damaged 1 is one of the best songs I can think of. You get some classics like gimme gimme gimme. I sure do need some more of this shit. It rocks. It fucks. And I just love every minute of this. Its exactly what I want and nothing more or less. As close to perfect as anything ive reviewed so far. Can't say any more good things about this record. Listen to it, but I get if its not your thing. But if its your thing its really really gonna ne gor you. Hell yeah
Kid Rock
1/5
Let's start off by saying this is not political. I dont really like kid rocks politics but that is not at all what this review is about. I hate thats where we gotta start but I have to cause it only gets worse from here. This fucking blows. It feels like a teenager decided he liked run dmc, southern rock but he thinks guns and roses is southern rock, and then rage against the machine made it ok for him to combine all that. It feels so unbelievably disingenuous the whole time. Im a suburban white kid, this is what id make if I tried to make trap music. It wouldnt sound right and no matter how many cosigns I would get wouldn't make it worthwhile. The only thing that sound genuine in the whole record, other than the closer which I do give some props to, is that he drinks, does drugs, and tricks women into sleeping with him. I believe that but nothing else. The opener to fuck you makes me sad generally. He can't call his mom, or his girl, just uncle kracker with some hoes. It just makes me uncomfortable dude. Like make yourelf the villain as a character, dont just be a shit person man. But sure the lyrics suck but the music though? Almost equally terrible. I was certain I would like cowboy or bawita whatever the hell cause I liked them when I was 8. But no. Its just bad all around. Generic bullshit. No bite to anything even though that seems to be the goal of the whole thing is to get a rise out of people but it does nothing even remotely interesting. I can hear all these sounds on other records done better. It feels like a cover band greatest hits. I hated really most of this. It didn't respect my time by being over an hour long. It could have been shit and at least got on with it. But no I have to suffer for that long. The whole thing just feels like he wrote these in his algebra class and still though they were cool when he turned 24 or however old this guy is. I will give some props for the closer cause it does seem to be real and genuine but I need to take them back again cause nothing else does and it feels like I met the dude for 4 minutes at the end after chopping it up for an hour. But damn if you love kid rock thats cool. I feel happy for you but please leave me out of it next time. You guys can like him over there and I'll be over here with anything else.
Blondie
4/5
A blast and a half. This thing is just fun. Nothing too serious but a good time start to finish. Starts off super strong and just bounces up down and around the whole time. Heart of glass is a perfect song and has no issues even a little. I just loved every second. I knew I would always like blondie but now I know. Hopefully there are more of these on here and if not I'll take a little excursion to the blonde zone again soon
Blur
3/5
Strong start here but it gets ethereal and whispy after that. Loses it luster for me. I've liked Parklife and the one with the train on it much more. This one just isn't that great to me. Listenable but not worth revisiting. Also song 2 is a bop but it reminds me of middle school basketball cause it was warm ups for the whole time I played ball. Weird blast from the past, good song though
Black Sabbath
5/5
Hello everyone. Rip Ozzy of course. Dude made some killer music. Even from the get go it rules. All sorts of all timers here and even the b side type cuts are also very very good. What I love most about this record is how balanced it is. Everyone gets ample time to shine. Ozzy of course gets to belt it out. The guitars have plenty of moments. And my personal favorite is the bunch of times where the guitar fades out and its just the bass rumbling along. And even a drum solo toward the end. Its just so balanced and I love it. You have heard a bunch of these songs for the last 60 years and they stand the test of time for sure. Just listen to it and savor every second. Its a classic and a pioneer. Do yourself a favor and hit it
The Cardigans
3/5
A bit of a departure from the sabbath that everyone had yesterday but I almost think we all came here too as a little joke from Mr 1001 man. The iron man cover is funny but a pretty unique rendition. I liked it. Love fool is a song ive known forever but never once thought about who sang it. And its still a good one. The other songs here are also pretty good. Nothing too crazy but the singers voice is very nice and one of a kind. Just a laid back chill kinda time. Enjoyable if not the most engaging thing of all time. Worth a listen though for sure
T. Rex
4/5
I was aware of t Rex for quite a while but I have never ever heard anything by them so I went in completely blind. And I was not expecting what I got at first. I thought they were more hard rock like zep or something similar but I got a more old-school almost Beatles ish thing. Or at least that era. I won't lie it threw me for a loop for a bit. But I got there eventually. I enjoyed the 2nd half quite alot and if I relisten to the 1st half I'll bet im on it too. Bang a gong everyone knows and I didn't even know thats what it was saying until seeing the title. Its a good one. There are some kinda metaly growls at parts and maybe even a bit of proto punk vibes at times too. It took some time for me to get going here but ive really enjoyed the time spent here. I hope to get some more Rex at some point
Basement Jaxx
4/5
I only know of basement jaxx because of 2 things. The 100 gecs remix of where's your head at and the same base song on Disney's extreme skate adventure, banger game btw if u like thps4. The latter is pretty weird but the 1st makes so much sense. Im not a dance guy. I appreciate it but its too repetitive and boring usually. Its supposed to be that way but I like things that mix it up constantly and I get it here surprisingly at least at first. I think up until always be there is perfection. Its straight up some of the best shit ive heard in a while and the 100 gecs crossover just makes more sense hearing that stuff. It does fall off pretty hard after that when it just gets to straight dance shit. Its not for me. It tries to mix it up and I commend it but for me to be down it needs some radical swings and its just pretty predictable. Im torn cause after song 2 I was ready to give it a 5 no joke. But then I got 1 dance song then another and by the start of the 3rd track in a row I was going to have to drop it some. That first half rips so hard though it can't be a 3 even if I really didn't like the 2nd half. Its just too perfect to start. I saved all of those first 6 or 7 cuts and that says alot
Nine Inch Nails
5/5
Classic of classics here. And I love it. But... pretty hate machine is just better in almost all ways. This commits and pulls off the industrial sound way better but the songs just aren't there for me personally. I had to put on thier debut after this and its just my preferred listen. I think downward is bookended well but that middle portion doesnt have good enough songs. It nails the concept and if thats what your here for then it sticks the landing. I want memorable songs and this doesnt have it other than closer. I'll shit on it all day for fun but its still incredible. Its still damn near perfect but I just have my own thoughts that are outside of the normal convention. Pretty hate machine is a 5 and this is like a 4.8. Why cry over spilt milk here. Listen to it and feel the factory around you
Stan Getz
4/5
Ayyy I had the sinatra with one of these guys before and I enjoyed that but this is pure. Its so laid back and just nice. I could just put this on and get an ice cold drink and chill in a cabana for a while. Bossanova I think but I know nothing about this style of music. All I know is I like it. Not sure what else I need but I got that
Destiny's Child
3/5
Its alright. Im not a big Beyonce guy to begin with. I think having some other ladies to bounce off of does make it better but its still whatever to me. Like it not bad but Its not really for me either. The hits are great and also dance with me are the stand outs. But alot of it is slow ballads which is not my style at all. Fine enough
Ice Cube
2/5
Well shit. This wasn't what I was expecting to write here. Its good in a way. But its nowhere near new and exciting. The biggest problem with this album is it just harps on nwa every single chance it gets. With similar beats and flows and even samples from songs they put out the year prior. Like damn ice get ur own thing going here, dont just coast on nwa forever. Its disappointing for sure. But if you liked nwa your getting more of the same and thats a plus if in that camp. I love straight outta Compton and should like this but id just rather listen to soc every time. There are a few tracks on the backend that start to try something new but its just too little too late unfortunately. Decent record but it should be so much more than we got
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
3/5
Shocked at how normal this is. Gobsmacked brother. I have heard trout mask replica before this so I had some expectations to be fair. Its almost nothing like that. Beefs vocals are cleaner but they still are what they are. Im not including the cd deluxe tracks i did also listen to but those are much closer to trout and in turn what I thought I was getting. Its just pretty good oldie style rock. Nothing incredible but for sure not bad. I had a fun time thinking what if this was the Beatles. How insane the world would be in that timeline. Fun thought experiment even if completely ridiculous. Grabbed a few songs for the likes but im not sure if I'll be back to this one. I want the weird the strange the fucking wildness and its just not what this is but thats alright
Rush
4/5
Its the quintessential rush to most people and i think it mostly lives up to the title. The first half is insane. Just line up the hits and profit. Good stuff. After that it kinda looses me a bit. Just long ass songs. But its still decent. The playing on the whole record is top notch. Just some of the best at the time doing it the best. Getty is a bass machine. Neal bangs em out like hell. And the guitar guy who I always forget put up some catchy and fun riffs. Just a solid good time all around.
De La Soul
5/5
As a big tribe guy how have I not heard this until now? Its not the same but its from the same vein for sure. The production is so not typical for the time. Its not the real old school style nor is it the gangster stuff on the horizon. It feels like it was so far ahead of its time that it jumped a generation almost. Its still kinda basic flows but they are fun and funny at times. Just a really really good time. I can't belive it took this long oh my god. Everyone else should jump on this too please pleeeeaassseee
Incubus
4/5
This feels so much like childhood. It came out at a perfect time in my life. The record has way more songs I remember than I ever would have thought. Oh its just pardon me and drive. No way dude. Stellar and the warmth join the chat. Some banger songs. Its alot overall though. You get some hip hop inspired turntables, metal guitars, the ethereal singing that maybe has a pop punky vibe to it, and put it all together in an unholy amalgamation and you end up here. Oh and some funny burt Reynolds. No wonder I like weird fusion shit. Way better album than I thought I was getting into. Pleasant surprise
R.E.M.
3/5
Not too much to say here. Its good but nothing too spectacular for my tastes. Man on the moon is great. Same with everybody hurts but I think everyone likes those songs. Also very fond of the instrumental after everybody hurts, new Orleans instrumental 1. Very good. Probably my favorite. Just solid new wavy pop rock with an i think Irish tinge. Whatever they are the accent its neat. All around enjoyable without being mind blowing
Thelonious Monk
4/5
Alright so i know almost nothing about jazz so take whatever I say from here on out with a grain or two of salt. But I liked this very much. Its so fascinating to hear some of the best players in the world basically write a song on the fly. I know you start with some standard and build up from that foundation but I dont know the standards so it might as well be from scratch. They just go on runs that feel like they were practiced and rehearsed but its not. Some smart people for sure. Monk plays the keys so artfully and the others who I dont know sorry play their instruments with just as much skill. My favorite part is whatever mallet instrument, that I'll just call a xylophone even though it might not be, on pannonica are incredible. It tickles me to no end. What a great part. And everything else just flows well start to finish. I may know nothing but im happy all the same.
Calexico
3/5
Initially this record was very off-putting. The vocals had a very gross cleaness that made me shiver a little bit. The instrumentals brought me back in much more that I thought it would. Nice little Latin rooted songs. Im still not very into the vocals but I ended up liking this pretty decently.
Sonic Youth
3/5
Hey its the coolest thing ever. Gen xers aren't going to be happy with me and to be honest im not too happy with myself. I just dont vibe. Like Kool thing is good and the insanity of Mildred pierce. Every other song just melts together. I should like this alot. Its loose, kinda messy, has 2 interesting vocalist, it has some speed to it. It should be a home run but its just not. Maybe I need to check some other albums but today its not it. Its still getting a positive look cause I can see myself loving this and ill just buy in this speculative market real quick. Maybe someday I'll love sonic youth. I really hope so
Marvin Gaye
4/5
God damn this is sexy. And usually im a freakin prude and dont get into this kinda stuff but its feels so sensual and loving. Makes me much less uncomfortable that WAP. Wildly good stuff here though. I've always head of Marvin gaye and I know the songs that are part of the general culture but I like the rest of get it on other than the 3 seconds in some shitty commercial. Just groovy and fun songs all around.
Beck
5/5
Aye childhood on a disc here. I loved this album when I was small. As ive gotten older I understand its not odley but I love it just the same. Its full of very catchy songs and Beck at or around his peak. The dude was alt Jesus for a while. Kinda fell into the background a bit in recent years for myself at least. But damn do I love this era. Just fun shit in almost every track. The only blemish I can see in the whole set is hell yeah is an atrocious song. I liked it a million years ago but I can't at all anymore. Its actually terrible. But other than that I like the whole thing. Sick record I think more people should come back to
Sex Pistols
5/5
As a punk guy its a classic among classics. Like its kinda a fraud but the songs are undeniable. Like sure they were brought together by some bullshit executive and that kinda isn't the punk mindset but doing herioin till u die and just being a nuisance does fit the ideals lmao. Every song is good and 90% of them are amazing. I loved it when I was a kid and I still love it now. Listen to it and break something or some shit. I dont care.
Eminem
3/5
Damn dude J-Roc is going muhfuckin crazizy on this you know what im sayin? But seriously em has kinda had a big fall off since he was the biggest guy who existed at a time. He's got weird dad energy now. Also only the dumbest whitest of trash were always playing him to matter what. But to the actual album this is generally the good em. Some real classic songs here but holy is it juvenile. Like it got a few chuckles here and there caue im a child but damn it feels like its made for 11 year olds. And edgy beyond edgy. The song that samples his daughter giggling but the lyrics are about mudding this girls mother and hiding the body. Jesus dude. In the year of our lord 2025 I know he's a cornball but at the time it would be insane. OK so now that ive said I hate it 100% I'll flip it and say I dont actually. There is alot to hate here but still a bunch to like. The dude is actually a great rapper. He always finds a way to make it fit. The Dre production is also pretty good. Not nwa levels but some good stuff for sure. And then some of the hits are still great and iconic. Full of skits and some are funny. Like the prank call one is wholesome. Makes me smile. But at the end of the day the dude is a trailblazer and so much stuff doesnt happen without his pastey ass. We might still be waiting for the white rapper boom. We wouldn't get the best of the best like macklamore. Damn thrift shop goes soooooooo hard. Irony by the way. I have never even heard thrift shop all the way through. But for real mac Miller im sure ain't allowed to be great without this dude and I appreciate it more than I like the music now but its important. Gets a hesitant good look from me
Incredible Bongo Band
2/5
Man this is a cool record that I have zero interest in. Like if I were making shitty beats this might be sick but I just can't. The fully instrumental path this is on is not my style. Even though I dont care about lyrics at all songs just feel naked without some vocals. Could care less what they say but its like an orchestra without the violins. Just feels wrong. The covers are a fun novelty but the whole thing kinda feels like a novelty. Just stack that shit up on tip of itself. Its just not my thing. Also the bongos get old after a while. Its a cool instrument but I dont know enough about percussion in general to really appreciate it. Also it gets old after a while. A long ass album highlighting the same instrument every time just gets boring. I dont hate it but im never coming back that's for sure
Metallica
2/5
Yuck. Metallica. I fell to my knees and screamed no when I saw this was up and its an journals long. It just sucks ass dude. It tries so hard to make itself sound big and important but there is just so little substance here. Everything is slow and boring. None of the riffs are anything. Just like 3 chords like a pop song. But at least some garbage pop is interesting. And James fucking Hatfield has the worst voice of all time. And I like shit singers. This guy's bully goat gruff ass blows so hard. And then the producer had the gall to double it up. You know what's better than one steaming pile? How about two! Wow! With a passion I hate this man's voice. Probably a nice guy but damn id rather him do anything than sing. And Lars on drums stinks. I have never played drums once in my life and I feel like I could get a full set down in a day. I know the fans even say that and I think they are too nice to him. OK the hate train is rolling out of the station. Chu chu. The closing song is listenable. It at least is driving. I understand the importance of an album like this. Im sure I have listened to a million other records who were inspired by this one. At least they pushed some kid to make something actually good. I dont disregard white a milestone this record is. I may hate it with almost every atom of my being but its done good things. I just want nothing to do with this crap. It should get a 1 but I have to give it some props. Only a little but better than me wanting to give it a zero if I could.
Abdullah Ibrahim
3/5
Well I really dont know jazz. I like it but I don't understand it very well. There are some very great parts for sure. On the title track the stand up bass part is killer. Dude is pluckin away. Thank tidal by the way for having the whole record except for that song. Wtf is that? Not the records fault obviously but still annoying to listen to the low quality YouTube audio. Got the point though. The saxes all over the place are another standout performance. But I mean every part is done by a great musician. Just those two stand way out to me personally. I'll need to give it another go another time but good stuff
Radiohead
3/5
Hi internet. I know this is "the greatest album of all time". I know everything thom yurk touches turns to gold midas style. I know all these things. But I dont love the music. I just dont. Its fine dont get me wrong. But I have not currently learned to levitate or shoot lasers from my eyes yet after listening to it. But jokes aside its fine. Too whispy and ethereal for my tastes. And I really dont like the vocal style at all really. Big turn off. There are one maybe two songs that have some get up in their DNA but the other 10 tracks are just so meandering and honestly uninteresting. I thought kid a was futuristic and cool but this is just whatever. No teeth for me. I'll probably never come back until I meet some hipster guy who will cut my pinky off if I dont like the radiohead. Idk man ther just are so many better records out there and I dont get the cult like following of these guys. They are good but nowhere near the praise they get on shitty message boards
The Clash
4/5
Hell yeah the clash rules. Though not my favorite. London calling is more me but this is very good. It has such a fun almost pop sensibility. Its not ocean avenue but its more poppy that one would generally think. One of the tracks is kinda reggae or like dub. Neat shit for sure. What's not to like here? Just listen to some grandaddy fun punk
Bauhaus
4/5
Actually better than expected. Not a fan of ethereal post bullshit but this goth rock has some teeth. The last 2 tracks are exactly what I dont like but the rest of the record is pretty dang good. I've always heard of bahaus but never made the attempt to listen. Im glad this site made me give it whirl. One song is almost a 3rd wave ska song. Strange but im into it. I was surprised in general here. Way better than I would have expected
The Temptations
3/5
Pretty decent. Not really my vibe all that much. Very 70s even though its a year early I guess. Its not totally acapella but there are some fun parts where the vocals make up alot of the music if not the whole thing. I had some fun with this and saved a song or 2. Hearing not Marvin gayes hears it through the grape vine was a bit tripping. Good time
Electric Light Orchestra
4/5
A very interesting if not totally enthralling record. Kinda Beatles with a synth twist and a singular vision it feels like. I could be totally wrong but it feels less collaborative than the beatles were in some regards. I saved a handful of tracks. Everyone knows Mr blue sky. That's a certified classic. Some others are also pretty good. Some have classical DNA. Thats fun. That's it though. Its fun. Not exactly the beatles but very enjoyable. Some songs are kinda crap to me but its more than an hour long so its not that big of a deal. Pretty enjoyable stuff and woth a listen for sure
The Police
2/5
Kinda sterile kinda interesting kinda nothing all at the same time. I've never really cared about stings singing voice and I dont really here either. Alot of the record just isn't worth much for me. Message in a bottle is a classic and that one up strummed reggae type song were the only saves I had. Everything else just blended together. Its fine but thats about as high of praise as I can give it.
M.I.A.
3/5
What the hell happened from this record to the next. This review should be about this record but I cant detach it from how overwhelmingly shit the next record is. I might be in the minority the one with paper planes is awful. This may not be my favorite thing in the world but its leaps and bounds better than what came after it. Sure it doesnt have a cerified classic like paper planes but it has rhythm and tone and just makes listenable songs. Like nothing is all that amazing but comparatively this is a masterpiece. Better in every single way. This is fun and makes actual songs. Hot damn thats a low ass bar but it does that and then some. I actually saved a few tracks here that were fun and worth listening to again. I dont know her music much at all but maybe she has a backwards trajectory. Best in the beginning and only worse from then on. Idk but maybe
Iggy Pop
4/5
Punks great grandfather is still killing it. Its a bit classic for my tastes but the passengers js a perfect song. The variety of vocal infections is pretty impressive. I can hear some frank black sometimes and even on the closer I hear Julien Casablancas. Its good classic stuff. Every song is enjoyable. Just a good old school time. Wild dude is still trucking along today
Baaba Maal
3/5
Man I dont know what to do with this. I have zero experience with African music in general. I know sorta the band thay Tyler the creator sampled on chomokopia. And I know die antword. Basically nothing. In general this is nice to listen to. Some of it sounds a bit fake, synthesized. But there are some really nice pieces of songs too. Mostly in the drums and whatever kind of mallet instruments they use. I know too little to name them but they are very nice. Probably my favorite parts of anything on the record. But I dont get grabbed by any full songs. That's my biggest problem. Its good but nothing stays with me. Worth a listen for sure, maybe you would get more out of it than me
Metallica
2/5
Yuck more Metallica. This is far too soon since the site gave me the black album. I feel similarly with this to the black album. Hatfield is one of the worst vocalist of all time. He truly ruins it from being an ok listen. And if I focus too hard on Lars drumming I vomit in my mouth. I will say that this record overall is faster and more driving and I do appreciate that somewhat. Battery is about the only song id say thats sorta listenable but still not a recommend. This shit sucks and I hate it but I will say that I gave the black album a 2 for the historical and cultural significance but I shouldn't have. This almost earns its 3 stars and while it still blows its much better than the black album. Id rather put a 2 here than on that garbage. All I can hope for is this is it for shitallica. I pray to whoever can help me with that. Im waiting with bated breath for st anger....please God no
Joni Mitchell
3/5
This is something. Id almost like to say I like this more than blue but I dont know how yall would take that lol. But there are some slow songs to start and I liked those well enough. It feels sad but maybe that's just joni I dont really know. Then it gets kinda silly in thr last few tracks. I feel some whiplash to a degree. I do like those songs too but it just feels out of place. Pretty good record though and I enjoyed it pretty well the whole time through.
T. Rex
4/5
This is my second t Rex record and I like this one quite a bit more than the last. It doesnt have a smash hit like bang a gong but damn is it consistently great the whole way through. I like all these songs and saved quite a few. Just good stuff front to back. Not too much more to say hut listen to it its great
Fats Domino
3/5
I know very little about this type of music and thats kinda a shame. Its pretty good clean fun. I dont know what we did to this in-between jazz and rock music of the 40s 50s and 60s. Its just not in demand I guess? But I had a good old time here with fats. Some very catchy tunes. I hear he's a piano player but I wouldn't say j was blown away by the piano at all here. Mostly his voice and the whole arrangements around him. Saved a few tracks and had a good old time.
Aside from the music itself im not sure if this book or site knows what album we should be listening to. So I went by name sake and had to find a Playlist of all the songs. I would have liked to hear these specific recordings but I couldnt find it anywhere. Not the albums fault but pretty annoying all the same.
Led Zeppelin
2/5
Its kinda amazing how time changes things. This seems to me, a young, that zep was demonic devil music in their time. And now its insanely timid to my ears. Like immigrant song is pretty good but nothing else really grabs me in any real way. This feels more like southern rock than hard rock or some proto metal thing. Filled with twang and some slide guitar its just not what I would think of when I think of Zeppelin. Its not bad per se but not all that interesting either. Since im loving you is pretty good until it drags on and on ad nauseum for what feels like forever. And its just slow all around. Nothing that drives the record forward. It just kinda meanders around at its snails pace and then ends. Im surprised to be so down on this one but its what I heard and thats that.
The Who
2/5
I want to start off by saying as a guy who doesnt care about lyrics this is very digestible and easy to follow even for me dumb ass. It needs some flowers for that alone. But that thing said this is insane. A rock opera is a cool idea and it does it well but the songs aren't that interesting and the story is bonkers. Why is it about a special needs guy who gets good at pinball and then becomes Jesus. What is going on in this guy's head? And why does he 100% have to get diddled? What the fuck dude. Idk dude, pinball wizard is a classic and its still good but it almost makes it not good knowing the rest of the story. At the ends of the day I didn't love this but I do applaud giving such a wild idea a full swing, pulling no punches. But its just not great in the end.
Sepultura
4/5
Its not roots but its still pretty damn good. It moves. And I like that. Fast as hell with some slower parts that break it up nicely. But just a solid wall of sound that is great to listen to all around. If you like metal music in any form this is worth a listen. Again the drums are it. That guy is amazing and his beats are my favorite part of the whole record. Its not as diverse as roots but sometimes thats not what your in it for. Its rips and that's it
Minutemen
5/5
This might be my favorite new album that ive heard in the idk couple hundred records this site/book has shown me. To be fair I knew that I would like this before cause I've liked "Bob Dylan wrote propaganda songs" since I was like 13. Also been a big fan of Andrew Jackson jihad for a good few years and the line "the skatepark is only 15 minutemen songs away" stuck with me a ton for some reason. Im just glad this site made me take the jump. But to the actual music. Its so wildly versatile. Its not just a hard-core punk record. Its got some country twang, some jazzy roots, alt anything too. And it has very in your face lyrics for my inattentive ass, that also have ooo shit ti actually say. And its my favorite hard-core zaz. Absolutely amazing for the whole 80 minutes. Also having 40 some songs on a record by the minutemen is so funny. What's the longest track here? Like 3 minutes? Shit just rules and anyone with a tiny tiny bit of interest in anything contained in this record you need to listen. Today. Now. Do it
CHIC
4/5
Idk shit about disco i guess. This doesnt sound like saturday night fever to my ears at least. But damn this was better than I was expecting. The strings dude. Those rock. Some funky fun. I used to think id burn disco record on a baseball field but I guess thats not me lol. Maybe not that bad but I would have said id like any disco before this. Le freak is a classic. What a banger. And I saved a couple other songs too. More than I would have thought. Some of the slower ones aren't really for me but if it has some getup then im down.
Gene Clark
2/5
Not much to say with this one. Like its fine but nothing memorable for me. It just kinda is. And thats kinda it. If you like some kinda folky singer songwriter stuff maybe this is for you but not so much me. I have to give it a negative review just because its the most 5/10 of all time. I wish it was better or worse so at least it would stand out. Its as the kids say mid, then vineboom or some shit.
3/5
I half like this. Its kinda that ethereal whispy thing I dont like but it has some edge in places. Kamakazi is one of the songs I liked. Thumb yorke is here and im not sure how to feel about that. It at least is interesting to listen to. It held my attention the whole time but I dont see myself back to this one again.
The National
1/5
Yuck. This is mega lame. Mega ultra Uber lame. Do any of these people even want to be here making this? Sure doesnt sound like it. Just flat from the first moments till I trudged through to the end. Maybe I could see the lyrics having some punch to them but I dont listen to them sorry. But coming out of this monotone boring ass voice who even cares if the content has any legs. Dude doesnt want to preform it. Just let it dribble out of his mouth. The backing music isn't horrible but its so boiler plate nothingness. This could be the backing to any indie band that has ever existed and it would also fit just the same. Its so boring. All around a horrific waste of 45 minutes. I'll always listen to everything all the way through but this was getting close to a dnf.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Surprising this is actually sick. I cant even belive it. I really dont like born in the USA or born to run or Jason borne or any other birthright songs. Those are terrible. I was expecting that type of stuff. But he makes actual music. Like real heartfelt stuff. Just a guy with an acoustic guitar and maybe some xylophone or something to bring it all together. I liked almost every song here. A few get a bit too much toward the end but its a 90% hit rate. What happened from here to the next record. It worked out for him thats for sure but this is much more for me
Television
5/5
I've liked this album for a number of years at this point but its been a while since ive listened to it straight through. Im not disappointed thats for sure. Im not even sure what to call what this is? Artsy proto punk? All I know is it sounds damn good. There are magical moments in every song on the record. Even if im not in love with the whole track there are genius section everywhere. Just great riffs throughout. The vocals are something I feel like ive heard a thousand punk bands emulate. Now some of the songs are a bit long-winded for my taste but even then they keep it fresh the whole time. Man I was certain I was going to hit it with a 4 but I dont think so now. Its damn good and the score should reflect that. Everyone need to give this a try. Its worth every minute
Billy Bragg
3/5
Sick start but it falls off for me quickly. Nothing wrong with anything after the 2nd song but its just not that memorable at that point. Still good music but I just have no connection. Just some good old indie folk type stuff. Worth a listen cause maybe you get more than me.
Björk
4/5
I've always thought id like this little Iceland girl but never gave it a go. And I was mostly right on. All I knew about her was that video where she takes apart a TV and sure it does feature who she is but nothing about the music really. My biggest gripe is that its a bit too dance beat heavy for me but everything else is great. Her voice is weird and great. Its the weird inflections that maybe come from her native language but i couldnt tell you. And its wildly creative. Very left field without being just noise. Songs mix it up a decent bit. I just enjoyed this and hope that she has more on this list but if not ill be checking up on her other stuff on my own. Great first record.
The United States Of America
4/5
This would have blown my little mind if I hear it when it came out. Still pretty sick but looses some impact with the modern landscape. Its psychedelic. Its bold. It tries a ton of different things and nails it all. With the female vocals it almost reminds me of some Jefferson airplane if they did some more drugs. Its just a great time even today though. And the production on this is crazy for the time. I had to look it up, but he worked with herbie Hancock and id say that tracks pretty damn well. I had fun. Its no the president's of the united states of America but I got a nice lump going on for this album. Gross. But anyway great record that should be listened to more. Give it a whirl with your wood wife
Mj Cole
3/5
Better than expected. The vocals help with the monotony of the dance beats. I did save a track or 2 and that's nice. Nothing too crazy but a decent time
Billie Holiday
5/5
I was a bit turned off by the raspy voice and just my own unfimiliarity of the genre but wow I was blown away. Its so sad and love sick but its also so unbelievably classy as well. And its just all around beautiful. I got used to billies unique vocal delivery pretty quick and fell into a relaxed state with the just smooth instrumentation. What a crazy beautiful record as a whole. Just cant say enough about how killer this is. My favorite track I think has to be Glad to be Unhappy. Just gorgeous. Great record and after some time thinking on it it needs full credit. A+ work
Sade
4/5
Im too pastey white to know who sade is other than hearing anyone else talk about her. And what a damn shame. She's pretty damn killer. For some reason smooth operator is like a hall and oats song in my head and someone must have a cover but they didnt come up with it whoever it is. She just had a great voice and a great ear for what's fun and just all around good. Its just fun and chill. Good times all around listening to this one. Maybe even a great time. I hope she comes up again thays for sure. I can only imagine how she matures as time goes on. This is a debut. Come on. She can only get better. I look forward to seeing that shit
Kendrick Lamar
4/5
I was pretty late to the Kendrick party. I tried damn when it came out and it kinda bored me. Going back its decent but for all the albums ive listened to by him its the worst. And this one here is somewhere in the middle I would say. Its pretty good but not mindblowing. A good crop of hit hit hiiiit songs thats for sure. But the b sides aren't that compelling to me. Still good but not as good as tpab or for me Mr moral. Unpopular but I like Mr moral quite a bit. But Kendrick is great and even his worst output is above average at this point at least. And this might be middle of the road for me if im doing a lame internet tier list but its still great. The hits hit and that carries it pretty damn far.
Elastica
4/5
Whiplash with this one for me. It starts as something tailor made for me. Girl led punk rock. Just fast and harsh but with some pop sensibilities. Then it sorta falls off after 5 or 6 songs. It just turns into kinda ok pop rock or like a grunge thing everyone else was doing at the time. When those tracks started I was thinking hole or garbage as an analog. And those are fine, good even but I was excited for 16 punk rock tracks and thats not what I got. I got blue balled a bit. Swollen and tight. Its still good. Just not what I was looking for. Not exactly. At the start this was an easy 5 star but maybe its only a 3. But ill probably split the difference cause I still liked the more regular of the time tracks, just not as much as the others
Charles Mingus
3/5
I never know what to do with jazz. Its full of masterpiece moments and then it fades out to acceptable and back and forth. Im always amazed by what the players so off the cuff but im not musically inclined enough to fully grasp how and why they do what they do. This was pretty good all that considered. I thought mingus was a piano guy but I hear he's a bass man. And I respect that. Those guys are always my favorite to be honest. Just the cool collected background who you dont think of much but if they wrent there you would know immediately. The performances that stand out are the Spanish guitar and the sax and piano. Lots of very great moments with each. I had a good time and even saved a piece which I wasn't expecting.
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Yeahhhh rumours is great. Its nice to come back to an album you liked years ago and its still good. Nice yo not do the whole I was a dumbass thing. Sometimes young you makes some good decisions. Its just fun and nice and enjoyable start to finish. I like almost every song in the record and the ones im not crazy about still have bright spots. Its just a classic and I could see someone calling it perfect. I dont believe in that but its so damn good. Worth a listen 100%. One of the easier recommendations ive got.
Fiona Apple
5/5
I cant have a totally objective look at this cause it was THE pandemic album for me. It came out at the perfect time. And it hit so good. I must have listened to it like 50 to 100 times. What an incredible record though. Its so small in the production and instrumentation but the voice of this record is so big and loud. Its just a perfect mix. Everything hits so hard. The music itself comprised of mostly just drums and bass and some guitar, piano is great. All killer no filler. The stand up version of bass is so sick. I just love it all of it. Its really amazing and everyone should give any of Fionas music a listen its all great. Though this might be my own personal favorite
The Strokes
5/5
I'll never remember that we got a less risqué album cover and it will always be kinda sad but pretty funny too. This record has quite a few huge songs on it. And they are great songs for sure. And the b side type tracks also are very very good. When I think of the strokes I think of sonic youth. They are almost the coolest than cool of my millennial generation. Julian casablancas is one of the coolest dudes of all time. And his voice or at least the effects on it just excentuate its qualities so well. The kinda old timey radio thing where the lows just buzz in such a pleasing way. And the music itself just works. It fits so well and doesnt take over ever. It just works and thats it. Its kinda hard to say if its a 5 or not but its damn close otherwise. The strokes haven't held the attention the whole tome after or went off into the sunset like sonic youth. That might have been better but that doesnt take awa from how good this is. Its a 5. It has to be
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
3/5
As a not well versed jazz guy this immediately reminded me of monsters inc. Im not sure what that says about me but it is what it is. But there are some great tracks here. I really loved take five and blue rondo. Both very very good. And otherwise I liked it but I just dont know great jazz from not great jazz. I always have fun but I still haven't come across that aha moment I feel like I need. Maybe it will come maybe not. Ik just going with the flow here.
Animal Collective
2/5
This is what i thought imagine dragons sounded like when I was an idiot. Its fine... like its pretty in a way. But the electronic and indie type Mashup just is not something that works for me. My girls is the best song here but its not worth listening to it ever again. Maybe if I cared about lyrics at all I could connect with that but still dont give a shit. The yelpy vocals suck and the production on them makes them feel out of rhythm with the rest of the track. Lions in a coma is unlistenable with its weird twang. And everything else is just who cares type. Just nothing worth the time. Glad when it was over but not the worst thing ive ever heard. Just kinda generally crap
Shack
3/5
This is a pretty average album for me. Nothing that stands out as great and nothing that stands out in the opposite way. Nice enough to listen to. As an American, the undiscript British isle accent is nice. But thats almost all that stands out. Its someone who isn't me's favorite album. Its just fine.
Elvis Presley
3/5
Not super sure what to do with Elvis. On one hand he was my grandma's favorite. And since she's passed on its brings back some memories. But he also didnt write a damn thing and his versions are generally worse than the originals. Tutti frutti sounded so strange to me. The little Richard one is way better. But I also dont know all the originals either. Blue suade shoes sounds good to me but its not his. But he sure does have an iconic voice. And the Elvis mania is historic. Its tentatively a good record. If I just move on gor a second its pretty good. Not everything works for me but generally its good. Some of the slower songs aren't for me. But some real hits exist here too. Im torn for sure. I should really find all the originals and compare but thats not what this should be. Its good and its worth a listen even just for historic purposes. Though ill never loose sight of the fact that he was a performer and not a musician or writer
Brian Eno
4/5
Wow ambient music that I dont hate outright? What is this opposite day? Its actually good and not being me to tears. Amazing. I've had another eno record with David bryne and that sounded like it would be a home run but it kinda stunk if I recall. This is good though. Oh no my shit gamer brain is coming out.... it feels like its the backing track in something that is explorative. Like the new open air Zeldas. But more journey or abzu for the deep cuts. Where its playing in the background of swimming a character through an underwater cathedral.... OK gamer brain deactivate. It just sounds nice and doesnt get too repetitive. It is kinda but it doesnt feel to bad. Just good stuff that was actually worth listening to. Very surprised
Neil Young
3/5
Less keen on this one that after the gold rush. There are more huge songs here than there but the package as a whole is better on the former record. This one maybe hits harder in its best moments but the other songs just dont do it for me. Heart if gold and old man are classics and amazing songs. Don't get me wrong. But nothing else has any staying power. Its still a good record but ive already heard better from Mr Young.
The Black Keys
3/5
Kinda whatever. I remember when this came out and it was big-time on the alt radio station I listened to at the time. The hits are pretty decent and the whole package is alright. Nothing special. I remember liking rubber soul much more back then. Couldn't tell you if thay would be the case today but at the time that was it. I like the vocals but the music itself feels kinda simple and just uneventful. Its good but nothing to write home about
Nina Simone
3/5
Not super hot on this one. I do yearn for more unique voices like this though. Imagine bad guy with something other than just the boiler plate norm. That would be sick but its not what it is. Nina just excuses clas and style though. And in a different way than some tiny 90lbs bimbo of the time. She's so damn cool. But the music itself is only OK. Its decent but nothing to write home about. Didn't grab me like Billie holiday. And that might be a dumb comparison but in my limited knowledge its close enough. But worth listening to for sure.
4/5
What a sick album. Its lead by bass and im a huge sucker for that stuff. Every song has a great lick on it. And the synths are so cool. Some really neat tones come out of that little machine. Not too much to say other than its great and I had alot of fun listening to the whole thing. Not perfect but great great great
Can
1/5
Yuck. It started off like something at least listenable but in the 2nd half its just spacey noise. Pretty shit not gonna lie. The first long ass song was OK for the first 3 minutes then I was done for the next 15. Terrible. Im sure I just dont get it or care to get it but if u wanna make it for me and my selfish ass make this shit 3 min long max. Too long and it makes my brain go numb. I was gonna give it a 2 for the first few but even then those aren't great. Not for me dawg
Creedence Clearwater Revival
5/5
I saved every single track on the record so I guess that makes it a perfect 5. Its just so damn sick. The band is a whole lot more than just fortunate son. Just give it a go. Easy
Michael Jackson
5/5
Its thriller. Come on. Like i dont love the songs that aren't mega hits and pyt had a great. I dont know chorus?, but it happens one time and the rest ain't that amazing. But it has beat it and the title track and all the others. Its still the king of pop sitting atop his throne. And thats that
Manu Chao
4/5
Interesting for sure. Solid all around though. I was a bit thrown off by the Spanish, English, and French. It makes sense but I might have expected 2 of those not all three. I did go back and listen to some of his older band stuff mano negro, and it has a little more edge but it tracks really well that thos is where we end up. I had a good time but nothing groundbreaking. A worthwhile listen
Nirvana
5/5
First off I love this record. It may not be as fully solid as nevermind but the highs are insanely good. Heart shaped box is my favorite song for sure. Of all time from the band. Pennyroyal tea is also up there. Dumb as well but I do prefer the MTV unplugged version. Some of the other songs maybe aren't my favorite but a bunch are still great and they make up for the ones I dont care too much for. Its still nirvana. I would be curious what it would look like with them still around today but it worked out how it was going to work out. And I dont think I could take nirvanas 17th studio record. Ending on all Apologies is the perfect bow to a great run.
Tears For Fears
5/5
This record is sick. So damn cool. Synth pop legends. A handful of all time bangers. Shout is perfect. The guitars dont seem like they would rip but he'll yes they do. Very few tracks here that aren't worth every second. Its just so good. The vocals are great. Its the whole package. Just listen to this
Radiohead
3/5
Well this just might be my favorite radiohead record so far. Its still not amazing as much as the internet tells me it is. At least its not buried in production like alot of the others ive heard, that being kid a and in rainbows. Kid a might not be my favorite but at least its forward thinking. In rainbows can suck a fart. That one is the most average thing ive ever heard. But back to this one. Its less robotic and just some instruments going at it and i appreciate that. And ive never liked the vocal styles but black star for some reason it works fully. High and dry is pretty good. Its the big song I guess. Fake plastic trees for some reason is worth it. And then everything else is fine. Maybe after this site makes me listen to every single record they ever put out ill get it but even if this is my favorite i still dont get it. Its fine and that's kinda it
The Mars Volta
2/5
This feels like either a radio band trying to do something very artistic or a "real" band trying to capture the radio. Either way it tries too hard. The only song I know was inert esp and I have always been annoyed with that song. I dont know what it is but its just one of those nails on a chalkboard types. But thats one of the better songs here. Not a good sign. Its not all doom and gloomy though. There are some neat ideas here and there but usually its followed by something baffling or layer up with something else that stinks. The vocals too are not for me. It feels like a slightly mature pop punk. That type should be childish and dumb, making songs about their dick not whatever esoteric crap is here. So in short its not good but not the bottom of the barrel. Glad its over but not clawing my ears off
3/5
Pretty decent and funky. I never knew more that what its good for or whatever its called but I enjoyed this well enough. Nothing too great or nothing bad. Just average type.
Johnny Cash
4/5
Well its not Folsom but its still a hell of alot of fun. The crowd interactions are great and make me think back to some of the experiences I have with live music. The set list is very good, my only gripe being playing san Quentin and then reprising it immediately. The 1st version is messy but thats more my style. Its just a damn solid live record. Crazy thing to think of now but imagine Travis Scott doing a show on rikers island. You just cant. In the end, I had fun.
Nightmares On Wax
2/5
Lo fi beats to just be high to. The anime girl is just staring straight forward with red glassy eyes. I dont listen to that crap and I dont listen to this kinda crap either. Its just so boring. It all blends together. Its music that I would like if its in the background of something else. I dont know in a dumb game or something. It would be acceptable but im not listening to it intently. Its just there kinda vibe. It just all blends together and I cant tell the different between any of the tracks. I bearly know when one ends and when another begins. Its just not for me dude. The bass and island vibes are decent but nothing to drag the rest of the project out of the muck.
Ride
2/5
Second straight borefest. Its fine enough just has no consequence to my life at all. It exisists and thats almost all I have. I listened to all the cd tracks and they also had the 01 extended tracks and I couldnt bring myself to go any further. I didnt need 40 minutes or the 55 I listened to. I for sure didnt need the 75 minute version. Spacey bullshit if thats your thing go for it, but I will never listen to this again.
The Who
3/5
What a middle of the 60s album. Half of it sounds like that screaming girls early 60s stuff and the other half is post beatles going off. Very similar to the beatles. The same type of trajectory at the time. And i like both modes. Mayeb not the same caliber as something like the beatles but still pretty good. The title track os my favorite here but everything else is enjoyable enough. Nothing that stands out in a wild way though. I had enough fun for sure but im not saving every track here. Only 2 to be exact. But i was still happy here
Jerry Lee Lewis
3/5
Pretty fun and energetic set. I do wish we got more of the crowd. I liked that kind of stuff. Very old-school but a good kind of old. The vocals remind of of danzig sometimes but im sure he took inspiration from things like this. But at the end of the day its just good old fun. Nothing more but nothing less
Muddy Waters
5/5
If i think of blues this is exactly what I hear in my head. I dont know alot about the blues but I know this. Though ive never heard the opening track before if I close my ears and hear the blues play its this song. Kind of amazing right? The record here is so damn sick. The vocals the riffs, just the little banter from the musicians at the end of some tracks. Its honestly incredible. I thought oh thos is a solid solid 4, but now I dont think it is. I have to go higher. It deserves it. I'll be coming back again for this over and over again
Fela Kuti
3/5
There is some cool stuff in here but its kinda buried behind pretty repetitive parts. It just goes on and on for 10 minutes but then the vocals come in. And the male and backup female vocals are both so good. Maybe its the accent that ill never get closer than Africa but its so great. Also some cool variations on the main themes of each track. But again those sections are too few and far between for my tastes. Still good though. The highs are very high to be fair.
Kings of Leon
2/5
Its fine. I didnt like it when it came out and I like it more now but not really all that much more. Feels over produced like alot of radio bs. The vocals I cant stand except when it gets a little country in the middle somewhere. I think that style is much more suited to this vocal technique. But still not that great. Sex is on fire is the only song worth much here and mostly for novelty and nostalgia to be honest. Use somebody still stinks like the first time I heard it. The ohs sound like they are coming out of a bar 2 blocks away. Its weird and not very pleasant. Its whatever though. Good enough to not make me angry but nothing more or less. Kinda unmemorable
Cypress Hill
3/5
Not too bad here. Although I can never get it out of my head that the trashiest people ive ever known were big into this group. Still holds that context for me but actually listening to it, it doesnt feel that trashy. A hit maybe but not the same level. I was thrown off that the opening song is mixed horribly. The beat is blasting and the vocals are just buried. I haven't a clue what they are even doing. It gets better but that was a bad 1st impression. These guys love public enemy by the way. They wear that influence on thier sleeves for sure. I like public enemy too but I like them more than cypress hill. Also nwa is the same thing. Its an ok record with a few songs I like but nothing that changes my life. Just a good enough effort
Bobby Womack
4/5
All I knew about bobby womack before this was stylo by the gorillaz. Amd I didnt really even like that song that much. But im pleasantly surprised here. Its funky and soulful. It does have a few too poppy missteps in the middle but generally a very good record. The vocals are great. And im such a sucker for bass lines and they are coming out of this records ears. Every song has some good low register goodness. What a great time.
Elvis Presley
4/5
I've had some earlier elvis records and they didnt really do all that much for me but this one is not the same. He really has honed himself into a very very great performer. Im still going to be weirded out by the fact he doesnt write shit but he can show what others have written off really well. When I was a kid I had a compilation cd of him and in the ghetto was one of my favorite songs when I was small. And I loved it all the same here. Maybe its nostalgia but whatever the reason its still good. And thats how I feel about this one. Its just good. Not the best thing ive ever heard but the progression of this man is very solid.
Sleater-Kinney
3/5
The first song really set the bar pretty high for me. Its fast and pretty hectic and kicks some ass. But then time moves on and I start to see some cracks. Biggest of all is the vibrato type singing. Its just flat out annoying to my ears. And its damn near every single time she opens her mouth it has to modulate up and down. Just sing the damn song without that crap. I know you can do it cause I dont hear it at all in the opener. But after that its here to stay. And that looses quite a bit of points from me. But to the good. The music itself is above average to excellent. It all fits and has intensity when needed but also thrives in the softer and more moody sections. Im sort of torn here. The instrumentation is great but I can't stand one aspect of the singer that's used to excess. Cause otherwise the singing would be also great. But alas we have that warbley thing that does ruin it. Its still a good record but I have some serious reservation about what ive heard here
Dexys Midnight Runners
4/5
Hell of a good time here. Just fun. Kinda ska like kinda folk sections. Its the come on Eileen guys. I never would have thought id listen to anything else by these guys. But good and fun stuff. Very enjoyable
The Pogues
4/5
Neat record. Reminds me of a handful of different things. Firstly punk bands with this Celtics leaning from my childhood, flogging Molly and silly old dropkick Murphys, although those guys are at best Irish Americans. And then second my first job washing dishes in an Irish pub. And my boss getting hammered on ironicly American beer, budweiser, and doodling away on that little Celtic flute. Interesting memories. But this crop of tracks is pretty damn good. Very folky and not only Irish coded either. Fiesta is very spanish and also a highlight for me. That gravely and harsh vocal delivery is so damn good. It just gives the peices some real grit and slot in perfectly in my opinion. My biggest gripe is its a hell of alot of a good thing. An hour on the 03 remaster is too much. Almost 20 tracks. But there are alot of gems in there. I'll never turn away from the punky eff off type vibe that some tracks bring. And even the straight folk stuff is wonderful too. A great one to put on in your local pub and mosh to.
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
3/5
It never fails to be interesting thats for sure. Maybe not my favorite thing in the world but it kept me on my toes. Throw a dart at the board and they hit whatever genere you got. Well the biggest thing for me is the damn gangbang. Surely that ment something different 50 years ago. Nope. Its the same thing as one the hub. Wild. And people look at wap or whatever as an affront to God. This in concept is much more sacrilegious that a horney lady. Insane. That song gave me a good chuckle. I saved a track or 2 and that was OK. Nothing I love love but decent enough.
Jeff Buckley
3/5
Decent crop of tracks here but nothing that knocks my socks off. So real was the only song I saved and even then it wasn't like an instant this is a track ill listen to 100 times in a row type song. Its just pretty good and thats it. If I cared more about lyrics this might be incredible but I dont and it isnt. Its just ok. I do like that it has a few wild swings. Toward the end there is almost a nu metal type song that made me laugh. Enjoyed that moment of happiness. But I wouldn't say its a great song either. Just fun enough. Meh but not in a bad way id the final verdict
Skunk Anansie
3/5
Not all that enamored with this one. By description alone i should be but thats not the case. Its fine just not great. I have a hard time seeing the real appeal though. Its not heavy or aggressive enough to live up to the vibe its trying to give. But its not mellow enough in concept to pull off that side either. Its a strange record that I didnt have a bad time listening to but on the other hand I didnt enjoy what it did either.
Beatles
5/5
Its the beatles. And at that its the boy band the beatles. Beatlemania at full blast. As always its packed with all timers. Just hit after hit after hit with a few only great tracks in between. I dont know what else to say about the freakin beatles. Its the damn old beatles. Its incredible and timeless and thats that.
Peter Gabriel
2/5
Alot of these tracks start with some amazing keys/synth work and then it just falls away as fast as it began. Thats a bummer. Solsbury hill is a classic but thats the only recognizable track here for me. Down the dolce vita has some good getup going on but its really the only other track that left any impression. The rest of it went in one ear and out the other. Fine enough record but on the less memorable side for sure.
The Allman Brothers Band
2/5
Just too jammy for my tastes. Like there is nothing wrong with the playing or singing its just the proportions of both. Most of the tracks go like this, start with an instrumental opening for 2 minutes, get a verse for 30 or 40 seconds, back to noodling around guitar for 8 minutes, to a refrain for 20 seconds, back to an hour of guitar ad nauseum. Its just not my style. It feels directionless in a way. Its funny to listen to the crowd try and clap and cheer for the end of a song only for it to go on for 15 more minutes every time. I felt that in my soul. Id much rather listen to album versions of any of these tracks.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
About half of this is all time classics and the other half isnt really of too much consequence to me. Its the old-school singers songwriters type thing but some of it just isnt memorable. At least to the degree the boxer is. But the guys both sing great and the music behind them doesnt get in the way of that. Its damn good though. Damn good. Just doesnt hit you like a truck every track.
Cyndi Lauper
3/5
I think as long as I live in will forget that the girls just wanna have fun girl is the same as the time after time girl. Those songs are both forever in the pop culture consciousness. And they are both here. Maybe she had more music i dont really know but even if thats it it's a damn good pedigree. And the other stuff on the record is also pretty goodm nothing that stands out in an insane way but a good listen for sure. She does have a great powerful voice. And the synths are exactly what 80s synths should be. There are quite a few sections that they get to show off and im always impressed. Some of the more throwback stuff maybe not so much but it does mix it up a bit. A good record but overall not the best. Though it does have some best on it. The highs are way up there but the rest is just OK.
Joanna Newsom
3/5
I've never seen a record and got it with just looking at the cover art alone. Hut I sure knew exactly what I was getting into here. Its what people might think medieval or Renaissance music would sound like. Not really but to a modern audience of course this is what it was. I would like to commend this record for being headed almost fully by the harp. Don't see that every day. There are other instruments here and there but its mostly just a voice and a plucky harp. And the vocals is where it kinda looses me. It feels like the indie or alt vocals of the time trying to be olden timesy. It just doesnt line up that well. And it doesnt happen often maybe 2 or 3 times on the record she hits a note that to my ears sounds like my brain is going to explode. Its screechy and shrill beyond imagining. Like a throw the headphones off type shit. Not a fan of that at all. Maybe if I cared about lyrics this would be better but its just kinda fine. I dont know what its about and I also dont really care to. Thats a me problem but it still is what it is. I want to applaud the record for being what it is and picking a lane and living in it the whole way through. Its an album for sure. But not one im all that fond of really. Glad it took its shot but it doesnt hit for me
David Bowie
5/5
Another record that I cant be objective with. Its a record that means too much to me. I liked Bowie before this but I wouldn't have said I was a massive fan but when he died and put this out I really got it. Its a goodbye to everyone. And that hits like a semi truck. At the time I was going through a change in life and it felt like that part of my life had also passed away. It came at the perfect time and was exactly what I needed. Its been almost a decade since he passed, cant belive it, but it fell out of my everyday listening and this is the first time ive heard it since. I never forgot but it also wasn't in thr forefront of my mind anymore. This was nice to come back to. Its still very sad but also it give me some hope. And thats what music can do sometimes. Sometimes its just music and sometimes its much more than that.
Radiohead
2/5
Im going to hear every damn radiohead record against my will. Its maybe on of the better ones but im just sick of it. I know everyone likes them and thats cool and fine but I dont. Im over the whiney falsetto thing that happens on the vocals. Im tired of the ethereal half electronic half analog music thing. Its just not good. I thought for sure id be getting close to the end of listening to this crap but they keep pulling more records out of thier ass. I didnt even know this thing existed. I've never heard anyone talk about it. But here it is again. Im just done. Please for the love of God dont give me moon shaped pool. Please whatever deity you belive in dont let that happen to me. This record is not the worst of them but in a culmination of all my frustration with this band its gotta be low. Enjoy it if u like but I will not
William Orbit
2/5
President sleeper. Twitch.com emotes. Uhh biblethump some shit idk. This thing isnt very good. It would be fine in the background of doing something else but intently listening to this is bad for my health. Some of these could be the backing track to a futuristic racing game or a menu track and id probably like it to some degree but it doesnt have legs to stand on its own. It may be better than alot of stuff of this ilk but that doesnt make it good. Its just too repetitive and doesnt have any kind of hook I can find. Its like im the bass and there is just a bare metal hook floating in front of me. Maybe I check it out but im not putting that crap in my mouth. Just let me swim by. And thats what I shall do. Not the worst thing in the world but as soon as I stop typing it's gone forever from my world
The Cure
3/5
I love half of this and loath the other half. When there are actual songs with lyrics and music im so down. But then there are these droning ambient peices that make my eyes glaze over. I just cant get into things like that. I need the structure of verse chorus verse bridge chorus ect. And when its just long notes for 10 minutes I cant stay focused on it. But the songs I like are really damn good. I saved like 5 of them suckers. But you couldnt pay me to listen to the other parts. Its interesting to see where the cure in its infancy but other records are much better. Some songs are worth it though.
Michael Jackson
5/5
Its the king. Brother.... the king. I mean what can I say. Its full of all timers. I see why Sega asked him to do the sonic 3 soundtrack. Half of the bass and drums stuff is in that specific sound font. And that track list rules. Stevie Wonder is here and that song also rocks. The only real criticism I have is im not super keen on some of the slow songs but thats honestly just a personal preference than anything. They are still great songs just they aren't for me really. At the end of the day is micheal and this shit is even better than thriller. Thriller rules but it gets burried by bad here. Hail to the King baby
The Who
3/5
I just dont care for the who I think. Nothing song wise grabbed me in any compacity. My generation is still a good song but its a long drawn out 20 minute version and I cant stand that. Im much more interested in the recording. The playing on this is actually great. They synch up super well and are just all good musicians. The vocals could be better in that front. Its ok but maybe I just dont normally gel with that aspect of this band. The in-between of songs is the best part. I loved the audience chiming in and just hearing the bands thoughts and descriptions of what they were about to play. That stuff is the lifeblood of a live recording to me. And I might not love the music itself but this recording is excellent. It feels so intimate. Like its a bar show with 100 people. As much as I didnt like the songs that type of stuff bumps it up considerably for me. Like a gold standard for this type of album. Yet the music.
Brian Eno
4/5
Surprised to see a structured eno project and at that maybe the best one yet. It does evolve into the more spacey ambient stuff I know him for in the last 3 or 4 tracks but they are so incredibly pretty that I cant dare to take anything away from them. But it has real songs. Actual songs with a framework. Mind blowing. I even saved an early song thay had kinda a punk edge to it. Not expecting that in the slightest. Still not perfectly my thing but im try happy woth this one. Happy to be wrong about things every once and a while
Dinosaur Jr.
4/5
Feels pretty ahead of its time. I would guess this had a home in the mid 90s at least but im a decade off. It has such a wonderful harshness to it that just rules. Just plain goodness. Amd rhe vocals are beautifully edgy as well. As in has an edgy not like Eminem edgy. Ive always liked this band. Out there was the song and then i had the album with the sick bowl cut guy on it. Its all just solid. Not the best or biggest but just consistently good for at this point almost 40 years. I saw them live opening for I belive the offspring, and they blew my socks off. I haven't really strayed too far away since. Always coming back for a bit of the small Dino.
Talking Heads
4/5
Fun fun fun till daddy takes the big suit away. This record is nothing but a good time. Every song is fun and energetic and werid and wild. The heads just knew how to do it. It may not be my favorite of theirs but even if its not remain in light its still excellent. Its a pretty good sign when I save more than half the tracks. And even the ones I didnt save are all great songs. I just like it as a whole. Its worth your time
TV On The Radio
2/5
Bad surprise with this one. The first two songs seemed decent. Nothing amazing but at least worthwhile. Then it keeps going sadly. I truely hate the vocals. I dont know what it is but it rubs me the wrong way bad. And if thats not bad enough I dont even like the music backing him up. It feels so robotic in a bad way. Loops shouldn't feel this bad. I dont know if I really care for them all that much but maybe I just hate them too. Im not sure but I hate it here at the very least. And if I dont like the music or the singing I dont know what else is left for me? Nothing really. Its not completely offensive but I was very happy when the 50 minutes was up. Like I said those 2 first songs were at least semi enjoyable. Just a record shouldn't skydive into bad town the rest of the way.
Antony and the Johnsons
3/5
A little too Billie goaty for me but its at least and interesting set of tracks. Its not really my style but it has some passion and intrigue behind it. I dont know if ill ever come back to this one but I was moderately entertained with this
Bob Dylan
5/5
I think this might be my favorite Dylan record so far. But to be fair I think I say that every time. If only there was a record of this that was on this website to reference... oh well. But its great. All songs but one are amazing. The only one I was not into was the jack of Hearts track. It just goes on forever and doesnt do a whole lot with the time. Or maybe i just didnt like what it did with all that real estate. But tangled up in blue is here and thats an all timer of course. Its just bob Dylan and it doesnt need to be much more than that to get me. Call me simple or basic but I love what the guy does.
Missy Elliott
4/5
This might be the most mid 2000s record ive ever heard but It just rules. Its so refreshing to hear a feminine voice who also raps. Growing up with Nikki it seemed like girls needed to sound tough and hard and masculine to make it. Maybe im just wrong but thats always what i saw. Its different now but as someone who prefers a feminine vocal usually it hits the spot. My biggest gripe is its a little crass or gross at times. Not that male rappers aren't 10 times more so. But some of the nastier tracks do loose me some. I dont know who produced this but the beat selection is top notch for real. Everything bumps. I was not expecting to like this nearly as much as I did but im happy as hell for it.
Little Richard
5/5
Little richard is a bitch but like a good bitch. Like when 2 nineteen year old girls are tossing it back and forth like the pigskin. He has an infinite amount of energy. Probably cocaine but still. He's a fascinating guy. Is he a rock star or a priest? Is he gay or straight? What is he? That air of mystery is incredible. Unpredictable to the nth degree. But that leads into my only downside to this record. There is too much trying to be tutti fruitti again. Too many songs are trying to catch that lightning in a bottle twice. I still like those songs but they are inferior to the original. Everything else is top notch. This guy is my favorite of this era. Not that I know a ton but how can you not like little Richard?
KISS
2/5
Ita just not for me. I dont think its bad in any particular way, just that its bad for me. It opens pretty well with Detroit rocl city. That song is the highlight of the record but even then its not really that good. The bass has this little tripplet thing that is quite nice. The only other song that gave me anything was shout it out loud but even then it wasn't good enough to throw it a like. All the others are just nothing. I cant say ive ever liked gene Simon's vocally. And the music isnt captivating in any way. I didnt hate the listen but I would have picked alot of other records before this.
The xx
3/5
This is ok. Just ok. Its about as indie coded as it gets in every single aspect. Just run if the mill indie to my ears. I do like the idea of a male and female vocalist but I prefer women singers to such a large degree it made me dislike the man sorry. But neither of them are all thay striking anyways. Sounds like every other singer in this lane. Didn't hate it but I didnt get anything from it either. Just good enough. Participation trophy I guess
CHIC
2/5
Kinda disappointed with this one. I had a hell of alot of fun with c'est chic and this just didnt have the same sauce. It was rather boring mostly. There were some parts that got me going. There are freakin bass solos on this and that gets me bricked up. And those grooves are great throughout. But beyond that it just didnt have that same magic the last record had. The opening track is the best track here but its 8 minutes long and looses its luster over that time frame. It just drags and drags. I dont know, its just not as good for me.
2Pac
3/5
Man I was not expecting to be writing a review like this one thats coming up. I usually say I like Tupac and biggie equally but from this display I would pick biggie all day every day. There are alot of things to like about this record to be fair. The beats and production are all great. Every song has a sick backing track. And the features and background singers are amazing, each and every one. But sadly pac himself is my main issue. The guy has the lyrics and and insanely iconic sound, but he never does anything to stray from his flow. Every single bar here has identical cadence. Its maddening in a way. He could do so much more. But we get thr same structure for a whole hour. Thats my number 1 complaint. Its too samey. Another thing that isnt his fault at all to be fair, is its just such a downer. The whole tracklist is about people dying anf poverty and just the shit of shits. Making a pointed record is fine but id just like to hear about couple good times along with the bad. Don't gotta go too crazy but turn up once or twice and it would break up the tracklist considerably. I didnt hate this record far from it, but there are issues here that ive never seen before and maybe its better on other records. But this one was just decent sadly.
Beatles
5/5
This might be one of my favorites of the whole beatles catalog. I may still like the white album more but its been a long time since ive listened to that one. This is great though. Just full of perfect tracks. The only ones that didnt get a like was doctor Robert only because it feels like Taxman again just not as good. Still a decent song but too similar. And I also want huge on love you too. Sorry George your still my favorite. Its just too abstract and meandering. Cool sounds but not cohesive enough for me. Everything else is amazing. Eleanor Rigby was always my favorite song as a kid and I sill love it and its absurdly sad tone just the same. Not sure if its still my favorite but its up there for sure. At the end of the day its the beatles and there is a reason people still talk about them. And this is one of their best. Can't go wrong
Ian Dury
4/5
This was an incredibly fun listen. I had zero clue who this guy was but im glad I know now. Maybe thats my American showing but never heard a thing off this before. But I saved a ton of tracks and will be hearing in my shuffle roulette sessions. Some punky tracks, some sort of bubble gum stuff, some bluesy stuff. Its alot of different things and everything is done pretty well. I wouldn't call it a life changing experience but its one that im glad came my way
AC/DC
2/5
Its just not for me. Its not bad but I dont want to listen to it. Ive never cared for the singers of thos group at all. 1st or 2nd one. They both stink. It doesnt ruin it as hard as someone like James Hatfield ruins Metallica but I just cant stand either one. The music itself is decent to good but when every song has that gravely screamy shit going on it just kills me. There are good songs here just ones ive heard a million times and I dont think they bring anything to me personally anymore. This has almost nothing to do with the band at all but I knew this guy in highschool who only listened to ac/DC and he was very annoying. Not the musics fault but everytime I hear them I think of this obnoxious elitistly dumb guy. Funny in retrospect but doesnt help this musics cause.
Dagmar Krause
2/5
What a strange album yet interesting at the very least. I was engaged the whole time even though its the opposite of what I like. Its all vocals and lyrics that I dont care much about and the backing music is sparse. I didnt love it or really even like it but I listened to the whole thing without wanting to turn it off. Sometimes I get a record where thats the truth but not here. Even though its not for me im still glad to have heard it. I won't hear it again but once was not too bad
Radiohead
3/5
Copy paste what I always say about this overrated ass band. This is the best one but its still radio head. Vocals always stink. And alot of it is whispy ethereal bullshit. It does have karma police and its one of two of thier songs I like so thats cool. The best song thats still not worthwhile but still is the best is electioneering. That song has somr getup. I'll take that. There are other songs that are also OK like paranoid android and no surprises but im not willing to give them a like to hear them ever again in my shuffle time. Kid a is i guess my favorite but this os number 2. Still only really average. Not great for sure. Screw you pitchfork or idk rate your music, whoever has a hard dick for this stuff that isnt all that good.
Mylo
2/5
Whoa we're halfway there. This record is like when your a senior in highschool and you spent the between period time doing as much of the homework as possible. But you only got about half of it done. If you got everything spot on the best you can get is a 50%. Thats how I feel about this record. Its 10 or so half songs. The beat and background is what they give me. And its just not enough. Alot of these have the potential to be part of a good song. But none of them have the legs to stand on their own. Its just not enough in any regard. The few songs with lyrics get a little closer but most of those are just lists. Pretty much the ABC's in terms of substance. Its just not worth my time at all. But again it could be part of an actual good song so its not all bad. Just mostly
Massive Attack
3/5
I had the wrong idea about this going into it. For some reason I had this group pegged as white guy indie alternative type music. So when it started off with some loops and hip hip stylings I was massively thrown off. Took a few tracks to get into this new mindset. But then I was really digging it. Then I started to come back to earth. When I got some more instrumental tracks. Maybe even fell below baseline. Overall this was kind of a Rollercoaster for me. Up and down and loop de loop. But generally I had a decent time. N9thing earth shattering or anything of the sort. Just relatively enjoyable. Though I will say I had a good laugh when the record ends with the exact thing I was so mistaken about. White guy music closer.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
Sadly one of the i see the artistic value of this but it just does nothing for me. Its just fine but not memorable in a good way or even a bad way. It just is. It does well at creating this futuristic art deco type thing its going for. The transitions are all well and good. It feels like a whole statement. But its just not thay interesting. The music, the performances, the everything is nothing but forgettable. Also it tries some vocal manipulation on a couple of tracks and that is downright awful. Just nails on a chalkboard for me. In the end its fine and I will always lean on the side of seeing a project for its artistic intent when it lands in the fine zone. As long as you dont offend me im happy to give you a positive review. And this is one of those times
The KLF
2/5
Another day another pretty nothing album. It happened. I listened. And I just got nothing. Build a fire was the closest it got but even then its not worth my time. Meh is all I got for this one. Meh meh meh meh meh
Big Star
3/5
This is a weird one that needs a relisten. It was the first cold day of winter and I listen while walking my dog. Hard to pay attention when im getting frost bite. But its interesting for sure. There are some real cool dissonant passages. It seems like a kinda hate fueled thing too even though it doesn't immediately sound thay way. Like these guys are mad that they haven't made it yet. And honestly the should have. Their songs are pretty good. I dont know, I should like it but I need to hear it again. Gets by as a positive but maybe gets bumped up to a super positive look later
Dexys Midnight Runners
4/5
Honestly just as good as their first record. Its just fun stuff. The horns are sick. Who dont love them a little doot boot bwahhh. Come on Eileen is incredible as always. The singer has a unique way to do it but in a good way. Shits just solid. Just getting the daily recommended fiber every single day. Fun time all around
King Crimson
5/5
One of the greats on an artwork side for sure. But the music itself is just as high quality. The opener is probably my favorite song. It has the most structure. But after that it devolves into a more free form type thing. And usually thats not what im in it for. But here it keeps my attention the whole way through. There are some sparce and dissonant passages that I find very interesting on moon child. And the ending title track is still ambiguous and mind melting but it does come back to some structure again. Its a classic and there is a reason everyone had seen the boogies of this terrified red man. Listen and love it
Traffic
3/5
Another nothing burger again. Been alot lately. Its fine. Its enough. But not enough to do much for me. It exists and im chill with that. If you like it amazing. I wish I had ur brain.
Hugh Masekela
4/5
Im never sure what to do with these types of albums. On one hand it has so many beautiful passages dotted all of the whole thing but I also dont feel strongly enough about anything here to give it a like and listen to it outside of the album context. Dont get me wrong its a very good record. Even great and I could put the whole thing on. Just not a single song. And thats usually what im looking for is songs. I will for sure listen to this again just not sure when that time will come again
Fela Kuti
3/5
Very similar to the one I had yesterday. That was more jazz and this is more afro beat I guess? But it has the same type of spirit. The only thing is this is just more repetitive sadly. Puts it down a peg for sure. Alot of it is nice but its drove into my skull with a hammer over and over and over again. It just gets old. I do like the live element here. The language barrier honestly adds to the charm. He has to explain the names and have things almost explained to him. Thats great. The crowd clapping on a song here is nice too. Decent record and worth a listen. Im not sure it did too much for ne personally but I had enough fun
Aretha Franklin
5/5
I mean its Aretha right? I had always heard of her and respect and all that but I never sat down to listen to a whole record by her. And damn im glad this site brought me here. Its just all around great. She has a powerful voice and she has good taste. She works with good people to bring in great musicians to make the best backing for her. Its all just wonderful and good and pure and worthwhile. Just listen cause its damn near perfect
Violent Femmes
5/5
Now i dont belive in perfection. Things may well get close but nothing is actually perfect. This gets within a hair to that. Ive always like this but I never sat down and listened to the whole thing. But im sure ive heard every song on its own over the years cause they are all so damn good. Sure if you want in for blister in the sun that's fine. Thats a good song but there are a handful of better tracks here. Just give em a go. They all rock. Its just a unique sound and it has some balls too. Full of passion and killer playing. I love it so much and will always always be happy to spin this again
Simply Red
3/5
Didn't grab me in any real way. I had an alright time. Sometimes I like to look at the artist page and see what the most streamed song is just to see of i would even know that and I hadn't a clue. Even listening to it i wasn't sure if it was the "hit". If I had to pick the first song is the best one here. Not crazy or anything but the start was good. Good enough times but more interested in what's next
Cream
4/5
Im not the biggest Clapton guy but to my limited knowledge this is peak. Sunshine of your love is one of the most iconic songs of this era. The album cover is so quintessentialy psychedelic. It just rocks. Maybe not the most insane record ive heard but its solid across the board. From start to finish its juts good songs. Great guitar work. Drums are there. And its the first super group I guess. I dont know too much about ginger baker but ive heard a small smattering of his stuff. Clapton is Clapton. Jack Bruce is know the least about but his vocals here are pretty great. I should listen to Manfred man I guess. Good record overall
LL Cool J
3/5
Im more into this than i would have expected but I had pretty low expectations to be honest. LL is a dork. He had always been a dork as long as I can remember. And here he does a hard af type thing. Like hes trying to compete with he gangster rappers. And it doesnt really work. Not to me at least in the big 25. Maybe at the time it worked better but as of now it seems disingenuous as hell. Maybe I have the wrong context but thays what it feels like. Now the good stuff is actually pretty good. He does do a slower song pretty good. I mean ladies love him right? Around the way girl and 6 minutes of pleasure are the best tracks by far. But milky cereal is one of the most offputting songs ive heard in a minute. Nasty in the worst way possible. Im throwing out my rasin bran asap. The title track is OK but thats about as good as the harder tracks get. The beat selection on everything is pretty good though, I do have to say. Its an OK record. Not really my thing but good enough all things considered. I just can never hear milky again without dry heaving
Pantera
3/5
I liked this alot more when I was younger. Its still decent but once you get theough the first handful of great songs it falls off pretty hard. Up through fucking hostile its great then becomes s wet fart the rest of the way. When the vocals are not strained dude has a real bad voice. Not Hatfield levels but real bad. But when he puts a strain on them they are great. The guitar work from dimebag is great all around. Dude knows how to make the strings scream. The drums too are excellent throughout. The slower ballads are awful though. Real real bad. Its still decent baring you can not pay attention to what that dumb shit singer is like but not even close to as good as I remember it.
Nick Drake
4/5
Pretty great record as a whole. And thats the kicker. I would gladly listen to the whole piece start to finish but I feel like I'll have a harder time when the couple songs I liked come up at random. Im more partial to the tracks with vocals but ,though I never say this, they almost need the instrumental sections too. Im not too sure how to handle this one. I feel like I need more time with it but so far its great, with potential to be incredible. Glad to have heard it thats for sure
Dr. Dre
5/5
As far as im concerned the modern west coast sound comes from here. This is the zenith. Ground zero. Dre has a way with samples and the keys thats no one had at the time. And now everyone has it cause they all grew up idolizing him. I cant say enough about the production. Its immaculate. It doesnt get better for the tome at the very least. He could be a better rapper but hes good enough to put himself on the Mt Rushmore. Makes me think of kanye and how even though his production is better and more iconic hes a below average mc and that hurts him immensely. Dre has enough. Its a classic and should be on everyone's list of the best of the west coast style.
Orange Juice
3/5
Nothing wrong with this record but it has the unfortunate issue of reminding me of other bands and artists who i would rather be listening to. I get some bowie stylings. Like the 80s era type stuff. Maybe its more similar vocals but id rather be with the bow man. And especially this reminds me of talking heads. And same issue. Its not bad though. Its actually enjoyable but when you remind me of giants its a hard hill to get over. Worth listening and maybe if you dont know those guys you could get more out of it than me. Im just putting on remain in light instead 100% of the time.
Brian Eno
3/5
Didn't do all that much for me admittedly. Its for sure the type of early eno im much more into than the ambient electronic stuff he did later. Just nothing that jumped out to me in any big way. Everything was good but just not that memorable.im just a sucker for the structure and it exists here. Eno is still just cool though. And he makes interesting stuff. Good start to the old career
Rage Against The Machine
5/5
As un chic as it is to like this kinda stuff in 2025 I still love it. No one has EVER liked rap rock/metal right? I wouldn't say I do all that much but this is it. The exception to the rule. I grew up with this kinda stuff and it was ok back then but never really my favorite thing. Sure I liked the early Lincoln Park and shit but i wasn't in my jencos kickflipping my element skateboard. This record is about as good as that kind of music gets. The lyrics are there if that's your thing. The vocals are pretty great too. Its got that wubba bubba bubble tape guitar thats really is this bands defining factor. And the rhythm section is so good. The bass and drums are killer actually. They hold the insanity together. There are a couple songs that im not all that into but there is always a part from someone who blows me away. It really is pretty close to perfect. As close as we can get at least. It rocks. Point blank
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
Im not sure why but elvis Costello is some nostalgia bait for boomers type thing in my head. I guess kinda but it has way more going for it than just that. I usually take a nap with some slower and less in your face type songs bit I liked thay side of the record more than anything. The middle portion of this tracklist is the best parts. Less into the bookends but still. I wouldn't say this is the best thing ive ever heard but I liked it way more than I would have thought. Decent shit
Tom Waits
5/5
Well I figured i would like this one but after liking about 2/3rds of the record i think im a little beyond that. First off im a sucker for a few things. One being good bass. And the stand up across this thing is stellar. Top notch. And 2 i like unique voices. And Tom waits has a real one of a kind vocal style. Its so gravely and and rough and it just fits perfectly in these songs about the down and out types. Almost like im on the street corner and chopping it up with the homeless guys. These are the stories he would tell and id belive it. Its just a cool record. And some songs are just pretty as hell and it shouldn't work but it does. Its just a great batch of songs. And even the little inbetweeners are good. Not something id go out of my way to listen to but in the context of the whole album they give you some time to breath. Very worthy record. I hope to see more of him somewhere here
