1001 Albums Summary

Great start.

It’s hard not to appreciate this given what followed, I mean I love Primal Scream… overall this was slightly better than I thought it would be and there are some good tracks, but a bit too much filler. Before I listened I thought this would be a 2 but after a full listen it’s up to. a 3 for me

Such a good listen, my first 5 of the year!

I love shake your rump and you have to respect a 12 minute melody of just random bits of songs mashed together but overall not quite the same impact as licence to ill.

The title track is a clear 5, the rest of it not quite as good. I’ve rated 3 but really it’s a 3.5

This is so far away from tje music I was listening to in 1998… I didn’t hate it, but unlikely to listen again

Never listened to this before, there are some wonderful tracks on it, feel like I’m going to have quite a few 3.5 Motown albums in this list, I am more likely to listen to this again than Marvin Gaye so put this slightly ahead of that.

Mannish Boy gets a 1.5, could have turned it off after that

This is why I love this. I would never have listened to this album but I thought it was a perfect bit of 80s pop. I it’s a high 3.5, nearly a 4 for me which I didn’t expect when it came up.

Eurgh… borderline unlistenable. Half a mark for ‘Believe Me Now’ because it was short and sounded a bit like Air…

New to me… enjoyable snd would listen again

A 3 hour train journey yesterday and the 42 minutes of listening to this was not ideal

I’ve got a soft spot for country and there are some of my favourites on here. I LOVE Matty Groves

Got a feeling there may be a few Queen albums in this and I think this is one of the better ones

I think we will have a few Led Zep albums to get through too and it may be a case of whether they score 1 or 2 for me…. This is probably a 2. Some quite good intros and outros. Kashmir ruined by reality TV

Bit of a struggle to listen (had to use YouTube). Interesting and you can see how this would be brilliant live.

I do really like this but to have this and not Original Pirate Material in this list is criminal… the story telling is great though

There’s probably a place for this but I can tell you that being stuck in traffic on the A46 in the pissing rain is not that place. Boring.

On a drizzly walk through Southwark this faded a bit into the background… Skin Deep the best track and pushed this up to a 1.5 for me

Well this is just brilliant. It’s probably not quite a 5 but a solid 4.5 for me as a couple of the tracks are so so… Satellite of love remains one of my all time favourite songs.

This is a really interesting album. The US version of this album includes the song Dear God which is a great tune

I mean, it’s pleasant enough but ultimately I found this quite boring. After a full listen I went back to 1 track ‘Everything Means Nothing To Me’ which I did enjoy, think it was the repetition of the chorus that I quite liked…

Just brilliant. From start to finish

1 or 2 songs in the background while pottering around the kitchen are quite nice but a whole album in one go is a bit much… 1.5 for me.

This started badly but in the end I grew into it a bit…. ‘…40,000 headman’ was good

This is the second Common album I have listened to this year. I think I prefer this one… it’s got some good tracks on it but as an album it’s too long…. 2.5

I really dislike this… End of the century is ok and probably pushes this up to a 1.5 but the rest of it is not for me

Never really got into this band. Epic and War Pigs are good songs but a whole album is a bit much

Experimental prog rock…. Not for me, the last 5 minutes of the 24 minute part 2 are relatively interesting….

This is nice and perfect working background music, was between a 2.5 to 3 for me

Even though many of the tracks are 3 minutes, they feel like they go on forever… struggle to get thought this…

This was great, not usually a fan of jazzy hip hop but really enjoyed this

I wondered if the nostalgia value might increase the rating, but sadly no, it’s bad…

Pretty inoffensive but never really got going for me. She was in the Big Lebowski though (and did the soundtrack for Magnolia) so that’s worth an extra star

If I was a hippy in 1970 on acid then I imagine I would love the 13 minute ‘Sagar’ track…. But I’m not. The stones cover was quite good, the doors one less so…. 1.5

This is an album I listen to when in the car on my own…. My family hate it but I am drawn to it… Jersey Girl is great

There are definitely better Bowie albums but i love ‘Fame’

This started so well and I loved the live instruments…. But then got slower and more annoying…. Overall maybe averaged out…

U2 are one of those bands that your told not to like… so I was keen to listen to this with an open mind… but it’s painfully bad…

It’s hard to get away from the Pixar soundtrack sound that he has become. But this is ok and some enjoyable covers.

Not really a fan of live albums but this is a good example of one. I’m glad I had a long drive yesterday - definitely a good driving album. Starts brilliantly, gets a bit meh and then ends wonderfully. Would absolutely listen again

Well this was much better than I expected…. Loved ‘The Cedar Room’. Would listen again. 3.5

Not heard before. R.E.M are a band I’ve got into much more recently. This was a great listen with some really good tracks. 3.5

Well this was completely new to me and I thought it was incredible…. It’s probably a 3.5 on first listen but it’s definitely something I will listen to again.

It’s terrible but the title track is one of her best which is why this isn’t one star

Tiny Dancer is a brilliant song, but the rest of the album is quite dull

I went through a phase in my early 20s of really liking Buddy Holly. I’m not in that phase now but this was an enjoyable 29 minutes.

Such a good voice. The big song on this album I thought may have been one of the weaker ones…. I liked the first couple of tracks the best

What is that version of Born to Be Wild about? Not for me but of the Rock albums so far this isn’t the worst.

No. The most interesting song was ‘Sacred Love’ with the knowledge that the singer recorded the vocals over the phone whilst in prison which actually makes this quite good.

Solid 2. Good listen albeit not something I will regularly listen to

This started badly but I definitely grew into it. Thought it would be a bit more punky but it’s definitely Indie. Maybe their earlier albums might be better?

What a voice. Second listen to this this year and it’s a very enjoyable listen

I struggle a bit with Beck, I think if I listened to this more it might grown on me

My god this is long…. Amazing voice but half an hour is plenty, not 4 hours… was on in the background all day. It’s a 1.5

Was in at track 1. Never quite reached those heights for the rest of it though but I of this era, this is up there for me.

It’s better than some of the ithe metal albums. I liked Children of the Korm but mainly because of Ice Cube. Interesting to hear the Pharcyde on a track too. 1.5

Just love Leonard Cohen

There are at least 3 Charlatan albums I like more than this with “Some Friendly’ being their best album by far. However, I love them and can listen to this all day.

Enjoyable but they have better albums

Never quite gets going, some of the tracks towards the end with collaborations are ok (Ne-Yo, Ice Cube)

Surprised how much I liked this. She sang on the O Brother Where Art Thou OST and a couple of tracks really took me to that film. The last 2 songs are beautiful

It’s bad, but there are a couple of guilty pleasures in here…

Lovely bit of afrobeat and the drum battle is amazing. Think there will be better Fela Kuti to come though

The opening track is a masterpiece, just ok after that but probably a 3.5

A strong 3, not quite as good as are you experienced in my view

This surprised me, Chameleon was great. This is probably the highest rating I will give a jazz album, it’s a 2.5 (not quite a 3)

Costello is a bit hit and miss with me and this is closer to miss….

I don’t know what it is about Muddy Waters that I just don’t like…. And live albums are never great…. Not the worst 1 star by far but 1 star nonetheless

Just a good record. Good from start to finish.

Not heard before and at track 1 I thought I was going to really enjoy but it never got going for me. Interesting but found the vocals annoying. Title track was good

Could’nt stream it so had to hunt it down on YouTube, but very glad I did. Really liked it… bits of tindersticks and gene in there on the stronger tracks.

Utter drivel with very few redeeming features

Conventional rock followed by experimental instrumental, gotta admire it.

My real dislike for ‘Sex is on Fire’ means I would never normally listen to an album by these. ‘Closer’ and ‘Revelry’ are actually ok, but overall a very irritating listen

I listened to this a few weeks ago and gave it a 3, on second listen that might have been a bit generous but I will stick with it for now…

I’m not sure I had actually listened to this whole album before. I’ve missed out, it was a real treat.

Second listen this year. Very good

May be a bit controversial but I think this is possibly the weakest Beatles Album… can hear the influences of Clapton / Hendrix but it doesn’t really work (for me) as an album. Harrison’s Here Comes The Sun though is lovely.
