Boss - classic but not keen on his voice
Astral jazz? "Calming - I quite like it" - Caroline
Cool - Bosch - Sunday morning
Comfortable and familiar. Feels
Older than it is. Grunge but modern.
Quintessential shoe gaze - overall a bit much for me
Old skool rap - better than I expected.
It seems they were trying to decide whether to be prog rock, classic rock or heavy metal. The transitions mid-song might be important in musical history but that didn't make them enjoyable to listen to
Holds together as a piece - wistful but somehow uplifting. Special mention for Early Morning Breeze.
Caroline exposed herself as a mad Meatloaf fan - worth it just for that. Classic rock - overblown but enjoyable
Got us talking about "The Big Bopper" - worth it for that.
Proto-clash - punk but at the very edge - you can almost hear future clash in the background
Not for me - bit to 'experimental' not a relaxing listen
Surprised this made it to the top 1000 - nothing special just some run of the mill punk/post-punk
Nice enough, another genre-less album - excellent vocals and orchestral backing.
Good but rap doesn't sit right with me - I'll never be able to sing along!
Classic REM - worth it just for Orange Crush
Plenty that I recognised, a classic from my past.
Bit too long - it sounds vaguely familiar but I can't put my finger on why.
Angry. but you definitely listen to it!
Bobby can sing - which makes him a pleasure to listen to - even if this drifts dangerously close to easy listening. Soul with a hint of funk.
Bob innit. Shouldn't be good but really is
All brilliant, a treat from my musical formative years. One of my personal top ten.
Not for me - experimental, bit jazzy but not really. Ok as background listening but sometimes breaks the mood by being shrieky and discordant.
I should like it but I don't. Too much of a dirge. You couldn't even put it on as background music as it is too depressing.
Some of it was alright, some was annoying
Just like Dolly, but not Dolly.
Hippies who took too many drugs and mistakenly decided they should be in a band. No one should think this is in the top 1001 albums of all time. Will not listen again
Actually better than I was expecting. Foolish amount of swearing but that just amuses me.
Somewhere between Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, and to be honest I'd rather listen to either of them.
Victoria is great - the rest I could take or leave. Not sure they needed to try and make a concept album.
Strange, ambient, dance. Not really something I would listen too.
Not sure how to describe this - bit of rock, bit of folk, bit of soul. Enjoyed it.
For my money the best Zep. Love it.
Classic soul. Not something I'd come across before but very enjoyable.
The title track is obviously the draw here, after that some easy "jazz"? Fine as background but pales in comparison to the first track.
Inoffensive - not something I'd rush back to listen to but happy to have it on in the background
His voice is comforting, like being wrapped in an old blanket and the acoustic guitar adds to the calming effect. It inserted itself into my subconscious enough for me to listen a second time later in the day. I was vaguely aware of the title track before but really enjoyed the album - will listen again.
An hour of jazz is too much jazz for me. No doubt this is important is music history but I have simple tastes and I like lyrics to go with my melody
Couldn't get excited by this - it just felt like noise. It should be my sort of thing but isn't. I feel you might as well listen to the Stereophonics instead - they are this but better.
Proto-punk gave off Bowie/Lou vibes. Fine but not particularly memorable.
Definitely a Rolling Stones album. Not my favourite, but adequate.
Couldn't have told you what Willie sounded like before listening to this. Easy listening but nothing special
Genuinely difficult to listen to. I gave it a try but it just wasn't for me.
Indistinguishable from the White Stripes - and I find his voice slightly off-putting. Not awful, not brilliant.
Not bad - Pump it Up is a classic. Would listen again
I don't get the hype. It is fine for what it is - bland pop with very little heart. There is so much better stuff out there - I won't be listening again.
WTAF - this was tough, tough listen. I have no idea how to describe it - my best attempt would be Talking Heads but before they were famous and without the musical chops
I just wasn't in the mood for this. On another day maybe I would have appreciated it's heart and commitment - but today it just wasn't melodious enough for me.
The soundtrack of my early-teens, familiar but uninspiring
She has a fine voice, but I'm not going to listen to 4 hours of show tunes.
Decent tunes but not outstanding - happy to sing along to the ones I knew
More country than I was expecting, then more blues. Not too bad.
I'd never heard of Gene before, so I went in with no expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed this - will listen again.
Not sure how I never came across this generic "Manc" band at the time but I've heard some stuff by them recently. I quite like the slightly more cheery vibe - I can only assume they escaped from Manchester to somewhere nicer. Will continue to listen
Weird but surprisingly good. I'm not a massive rap fan - but this was a bit more than just rap?
Nah mate. Generic rock/metal - not for me.
Easily consumable, I think I prefer their earlier stuff though.
Portishead is something that you want to come across whilst listening an eclectic mix of music, but an entire albums woth is just too much of the same thing.
This is great - I'm with the Dude.
Madge does dance - she is polished at this point in her career but there just isn't enough soul in it.
As you might expect from Zappa, a crazy mix of late 60s rock, satire of 60s American 'pop' and stuff that is mad experimental. It reminded me of a trip to the Tate modern, interesting but generally confusing and not something I want to do every day.
Classic Lou - not much to argue with.
Oh no - far too angry for someone of my age.
My kind of rap - feels like it has a message.
Meh. Not sure what the fuss is about. Fine but nothing special.
Strange choice - but as is often the case I did actually recognise some of the tracks. Not too bad but not really my sort of thing.
This was much better than I anticipated but it is difficult for me to divorce the artist from the art. Also, as with a lot of rap, I find the lyrics "difficult"
Brilliant - the songs are all different styles and topics but all pulled together by the common them of Tracy's amazing voice. Heartfelt and poignant from start to end.
Oh dear - after Tracy Chapman this was not great. I barely made it through the hour. The problem with 'Metal' is that it is very samey and not a relaxing listen.
I don't know who this is for but I know it isn't me.
Not awful but there is too much of it for a Sunday morning.
Old school cool - perfect listenable but nothing that really moves me
Fab - you could listen to this all day. Free Bird is obviously the draw but Simple Man is probably even better - there isn't a bad track on the album.
The music of my youth - thoroughly enjoyable. Anyone who doesn't enjoy "Step On" is clearly under the influence ... or maybe the other way round
Absolute madness, starts off a bit odd then careers off the rails into some top end profanity
Classic for a reason - oddly familiar given that I never listened to them when I was younger.
Perfectly fine for a Saturday morning chill - not something I would listen to every day but good as some relaxing background tunes
Probably would have been happy with this if I'd heard it 35 years ago - but I'm just not angry enough these days.
Great album. Loads of famous tracks. I’m not even an REM fan but I knew almost all of them.
I don't know what to make of this - it sort of reminded me of Nirvana with a vague hint of The Clash - but not in the class of either. Fine but nothing stood out and I doubt I would listen again.
Not very relaxing - like a slightly more accessible Fall album - not something I'd want to listen to regularly.
Still a no from me - I just can't get into it. It is too much like experimental art - I can see the point but I just don't enjoy it.
I can't understand how Coldplay manage to engender so much emotion in either direction. I certainly don't love them but I also don't have enough spare energy to dislike them too much either. Fine to play in the background and not be offended by.
This was great - Blueberry Hill is obviously a classic but the rest were equally listenable.
I could have done without the second disk but other than that it was an easy listen
Really enjoyed this - never heard of them before but it was great to listen to something new. No idea what they were singing about but didn't detract from the enjoyment.
I was confused when the lyrics for this were no more comprehensible than the yesterday's album by a band from Mali. I still enjoyed the music though - something pleasing about the Cocteaus.
Not what I needed to listen to on my drive to work. Too old for this now
Enjoyed this - sort of soul, sort of rap. Plenty to enjoy
Can't not enjoy the Pixies - Where is my mind? is great, Bone Machine and Gigantic not far behind. The music of my late teens so a holds a special place in my heart
This really isn't one for me. I'm surprised an hour of "yih, uh-huh" is considered one of the 1001 best albums of all time.
I feel like this reminded me of something else but I couldn't remember what. I quite enjoyed it without anything really standing out as excellent.
Can't complain about Bob, never been his biggest fan but he is great storyteller and a more than adequate musician
Proto prog rock, bit of Cream, bit of Pink Floyd - I kinda like it but it feels a navel-gazey
She has a lovely voice, well worth listening to for a hour
