Reviews (page 8 of 8)

first time listening i liked the first half of the album better than the back half

Energetic, fun, irreverent and, really, who hasn't wanted to know what Tits On The Radio sound like?

Fav filthy/gorgeous Least fav Mary I was very uncomfortable listening to this idk why. Maybe I just don’t like the genre?

This is one of the first albums I ever downloaded from Limewire. (I got so many viruses on my computer...) It's actually relieving to see something on the list that I've heard before. Of course, I haven't heard it in ten years, but it was a fun romp down memory lane. I remember putting this on a mix for an ex-girlfriend and thinking I was really cool. (I wasn't really cool.) Anyways. Great album. Perfect for driving. Kids dug it. Great vibes all around. Lots of attitude.

Great surprise here. Awesome songs that defy genre.

Pretty average

3/5. The first half of the album contains some very important and danceable songs. The second half is a little less fortunate. Also, as innovative the Comfortably Numb song is, hard to beat the original. Best Song: Take Your Mama.

Better than I remembered

'twas aight

Cool, I got an album that was missing! I didn't expect it to be so electronic, as I didn't read the genres before listening, but it was cool. This was pretty good. A couple songs I disliked, but I think I quite enjoyed the sound overall. I definitely have more interest in this band than I did before. My favourite songs were Laura and Comfortably Numb.

I had no clue what was up with this group before hearing this and was surprised at how poppy it was. Lots of Prince, MJ, and Bowie influence here, but I think those artists just do it much better. 4/10

This record is weird though not altogether terrible. IMHO it ranges from ‘sort of comedic but still not good’ (Tits On The Radio) to awful (Laura) to reprehensible (Comfortably Numb like WTF seriously) then later kind of Bran-Van eclectic (Filthy/Gorgeous, though TBF they don’t quite pull this off) to ‘hey that’s not /bad/“ (Music Is The Victim, It Can’t Come Quickly Enough) I’m really confused haha

Good, kind of dancey. I think I’m legally obligated to give this at most a 4 since I’m not gay, though.

These songs suggest - if they don't demand - more radical hairstyles. Nevertheless, Scissor Sisters is a bright debut which fairly rounds itself out.

Loses steam towards the end

Good album, high energy and original

I own this album, but this is my first time listening to it from start to finish (I'm pretty sure I bought it just for their cover of "Comfortably Numb," but I eventually also fell in love with "Take Your Mama"). I'm so mad at myself for not having listened to all of this album sooner, because I really enjoyed it. Every song has so much going on lyrically, but every song is also really fun instrumentally. I'm a big fan of keyboards and synthesizers, and the keyboards here are fantastic, giving each song a familiarity of disco, while still managing to create a very unique sound. "Take Your Mama" is my favorite track on this album, and lyrically, it's just absolutely brilliant; the band does a great job of taking such a serious topic as coming out to a family member, but stripping away all of the anxiety, and just jumping in with both feet. Pure mastery as far as I'm concerned. "Filthy/Gorgeous," "Comfortably Numb," "Laura," and "It Can't Come Quickly Enough" are also fantastic tracks.

It's a bop

Fun, Happy Pop Rock.

Pretty fun album. Lots of energy.

I was happily impressed with this album. I pretty much liked all of it and VERY much liked much of it. probably a solid 85 or something. Haven't seen the next album yet but I will probably end up listening to this again after I trudge through that one, lolz.

Fine, some catchy some weird.

Lots of fun. Good get psyched music.

Pretty fun album

Great album! It’s like 70s disco rock! Listen again: yes Purchase for my collection: possibly Favourite Song: Take Your Mama Out Worst Song:

Nice enough

Was never really into them, but I remember the music being a bit more fun.

Fun enough and I remember this as a breath of fresh air when it came out. The sound and style remind me of Mika a few years after this release.

Not feeling this one. The Comfortably Numb cover is awful. On the other hand, Filthy/Gorgeous and Return to Oz are good. It’s tough for me to judge this objectively because I don’t like “pop band” music at all.

I forgot how many hits they had. My only critique is they try to hit too many styles from disco to funk, etc. But a good disc nonetheless. 3.5/5

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Laura, Take your mama, Mary, Filthy/gorgeous

I'm sure that there are people reading these reviews who simply don't know how awful music was in the early 2000s. It's difficult for those of us who suffered through that time to express quire how atrociously awful just everything was. We'd had some fun with Britpop in the 1990s, trip-hop had fallen by the wayside. Rock, metal and hip-hop had got it on and spawned the lightly-fried turd that was numetal, and literally the only fun that could ever be found after about 2002 was Mr Scruff. For literally years, the music industry pumped out dismal dirges and post-britpop fart noises. The happiest music one could find was Coldplay - and literally nobody needs that. And then, along came Scissor Sisters. They took a look at the desperate, desolate wasteland of the early 2000s music scene and said "Balls to that, let's DANCE, motherfucker!" and released this joyous masterwork. Back in the day, I loved it. Sure, there's a couple of bum tracks. Incredibly, when it was released I thought that their cover version of Comfortably Numb was an abomination. Listening to it again today, it's actually pretty good. Filthy/Gorgeous is underrated, eclipsed but not outdone by Take Your Mama. Scissor Sisters, along with Alison Goldfrapp and Franz Ferdinand started music back towards fun. For that, they have to get 5 stars.

Today's album is a pop rock/modern day disco record by Scissor Sisters. This is a very unique genre which I haven't really heard before. It sounds like it would be awful, but surprisingly it works. The band have hints of Bee Gees, ABBA, and Queen in their delivery, and are apparently staples of the LGBTQ community, having got their start in the "NYC Gay Nightlife" scene. Some of their music is quite comical, such as Tits on the Radio, which is loosely a song about beating off because you can't see tits on a radio. The only other band that I can think of who are close to this sound is Ultraviolet Sound. Overall, a surprisingly great album today. This music makes you want to get up and move. Especially Filthy/Gorgeous. I enjoyed the album so much today that I listened to it twice. Very different and interesting. Favourite songs: Filthy/Gorgeous, Take Your Mama, Tits on the Radio, The Skins, Music is the Victim, Laura Least favourite songs: Comfortably Numb 4/5

Not bad, I can handle some modern Disco or whatever the hell you'd call this much better on a Tuesday morning then a Monday. Best tracks are "Take your Mama" and "Tits on the Radio"

9/10 crazy fun pop album certified bangers throughout

Nothing grabbed me at all

I had never heard of this band prior, but there are some wonderful pop tunes on this record. Some don’t land for me, but the ones that do are REALLY great!

This is so good Steadily going down from the first song 3

I bloody love this album, loved it in 2004 when it came out (no pun intended), love it now. Just full of fun, joy and party. A slight shame that at the time they were characterised as 'that gay band' (which I don't think would be the case in 2023) as there is something for all stripes here. A slight shame that one of the most horrible sounds I have ever heard precedes the bonus tracks, but it's so banging I can forgive that.

This was a fun album but I wouldn't say that this is super great. Not really very memorable. 6/10

Joyous fun album that is still a good listen

Brilliant synthy scene music. Shears falsetto evokes British gay icons like the Communards or Elton John and always reminds me of similar bands during my twelfth year (The Darkness, Franz Ferdinand, Electric Six). The music is tight, zippy, funky, cocksure and enjoyable. Plus, from memory, the mamas loved it. Stronger than I remember if a touch poppy for me

I thought the album was good Good experimentation with the instruments and I liked the vocals
