Reviews (page 7 of 7)

On paper I should love this band. But I have struggled to connect to their sound. It’s too much like 70s Elton John and the Bee-Gees. That’s not a bad thing. Just too much of another artist’s well-established sound. It’s wall-to-wall falsetto and there’s nothing really new here. You could believably claim this was an album of covers. It feels calculated, not authentic. They are supposed to be based in NYC, but it is not reflected in their sound at all. It’s London/Cali/Detroit at best. They sound like transplants. I checked and, yes, they are from Arizona, Texas and Oregon. It shows. I can’t say this is bad. It’s fine. It’s just not essential. And it’s a lot of falsetto! Tapping out early. Oh and Better Luck Next Time totally ripped off Depeche Mode’s Never Let Me Down Again.

Dancey with a bit of a naughty spin to it this is a HIGHLY catchy bit of pop with one HELL of a single. I can’t say the entire album hit for me. It’s an inconsistent journey but one with enough sass and personality to make the voyage at the very least fun!

This started out so strong. Like... so strong. The first three songs are just a lot of fun. And then, on track 4, everything went pear-shaped. The songs got progressively more nonsensical and less interesting. The music became bland, the production flat, and the lyrics just so dumb. By the time it was over, I was so glad to be done with it. Which, again, is a shame because those first three tracks? Fire.

more funny than funky

Not my cup of tea

les scissor sisters sont composés de scissor brothers ???????

Some decent moments, but not enough for me to be fully invested. The ballads in particular are flat. Not terrible but not my thing.

Its okay.

Weirdddd album. Not exactly in a good way, there were a few tracks on here that made me laugh, and I doubt that was the intention. What genre is this? Who are these guys? Seems like a very personal pick by the list maker, or at least until "Filthy/Gorgeous," which I know I've heard. There's a bit of sauce, a bit of funk to this one that makes it fun, but only in a couple places (for me). As an album, not one I'd return to. Favorite tracks: Filthy/Gorgeous, Lovers in the Backseat. Album art: Very colorful, a woman staring at a portal to the real world? She's in some garden of Eden, dreaming of Times Square. It's pretty good, but not very memorable to me. 2.5/5

A little too outlandish for me. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

it's just Thomas the Tank Engine.

I think Ta Dah is a way better put together album. This feels all over the place. Doesn't hell that the cover of Comfortably Numb is absolutely wretched

They have some ok songs but the cover of Comfortably Numb almost made me end it all while driving.

Remarkably boring album. Astounding this came out in 2004 and sounded so boring- like they didn't have music to look back on.

I like Scissor Sisters but maybe not so much that would make me want to listen to an entire album. It's definitely different from other pop artists, but not necessarily my cup of tea. Had to stop and listen to something else to cleanse my palate and then continue with the album. Not bad, but also not the best

uhm…ugh. what? i liked Mary as a teenager. that’s the only song on the record i can stand. each track presents a weird vibe that gets old very fast. this record is very annoying. there’s only so much arrangement and production can do when your songwriting is ass. tits on the radio? the fuck? this feels like a highschool songwriting exercise.

Enjoyable pop,it becomes a bit darker after Filthy Gorgeous

Not quite sure I get this one. The second song was groovy. The Floyd cover seems more like a stunt than anything. The rest of it: there were some cool moments, but a lot of it sounded the same and some of it annoyed me more than entertained. I remember this when it came out, and I felt the same way back then. Seemed like more of a one-hit-wonder band than something worthy of this list. But maybe I just don't know how to have fun.

I went into this record not expecting to like it based on not liking it when it came out, despite many of my friends loving it - but I didn’t find it as annoying as I expected, moreso just really half baked. I feel like there are two dozen records a year that come out with these influences that are just as good or better.

What started out as rather generic hard/glam rock never recovered after a weird "Comfortably Numb" cover. The Elton John-ish piano ballad wasn't too bad, but it didn't feel like it fit, and I was not a fan of "Lovers in the Backseat" or "Tits on the Radio," though the observation key to the latter song is undeniably true. "Filthy/Gorgeous" was even worse, as "Scissor Sisters" kept going downhill. "Music is the Victim" was a little more tolerable, bordering on fun, but not quite there yet, and the same can be said for the rest of the album. Points off for one member's cringy nickname of "Babydaddy," points added for Ana "Matronic." And I love the story of the original two members meeting Ana Matronic at Disneyland, in part because I discovered that the park screened a sci-fi film starring Michael Jackson, written by George Lucas, and directed by Frances Ford Coppola in the 80s and 90s. The early exploits of the Scissor Sisters sound wild and racy and boundary-pushing, but nothing on "Scissor Sisters" reaches those levels. More importantly, there are no sisters in Scissor Sisters, and sisters are sorely underrepresented on the 1001. So instead I offer up HAIM's "Days Are Gone," Heart's "Little Queen," and Tegan and Sara's "So Jealous," which all merit inclusion.

While I very much enjoyed the last song - Return to Oz- which I did- I think it was amazingly portrayed from beginning to end and I could rave about it- it wasn’t enough for the overall album to impress me. I think it was an interesting album that if I got to know it better I could like it more, but just getting to listen once was alright. I feel like it would be a 5/10- but not 3/5.

Modern Glam Rock. OK, I guess, although the cover of Comfortably Numb was atrocious. 2/5

Fun stuff. All new to me. A bit over-the-top but it sounds to me like they were trying for that. Doubt I'll seek it out again but I can see the appeal.

The vocals are annoying, the music is really stale, it’s dance music but it doesn’t get my going, I hate the comfortably numb cover, but there is the occasional good song like return to the oz. Overall it’s just a pretty boring record no desire to return light 4

I don't think anything on this list has dated as badly as the Pet Shop Boys, but Scissor Sisters are getting there. Both were great fun at the time, but listening to them now feels like returning to the scene of an epic party the morning after.

Nee, kan mijn aandacht niet pakken deze club

Ik heb moeite om de juiste woorden te vinden voor deze blije geschaarde zusters...

Mjah, dit is me allemaal iets te frivool.

Quite a decent if typical ‘alt’ pop record. Got nothing to say really as its not my thing now and it wasnt my thing then. Definitely not as horrible as a lot of other similar records thats for sure, and Jake Shears has a great reputation as a musician in circles I wouldnt expect (he even cropped up on Queens of the Stone Age album). A lot of it reminds me of Elton John, especially Mary which I assumed was a cover (and is the best song for me). Quite a lot of filler, but the good songs are good for what they are. 2.5

Can't say I found this overly fun to listen to. It is a bit droney and dreary for me. The lyrics are "on the nose" too. Laura and Take Your Mama are pop hits, but the rest is largely forgettable. I'm not even sure it was a breath of fresh air at the time - pop was pretty big. I don't think I was the target audience and I distinctly remember avoiding Scissor Sisters at the time. Just not my cup of tea.

I guess kinda nostalgic, as was released the year I started uni and the singles were played a lot. Not my thing though and the cover of comfortably numb annoyed me. Very camp. It does sound well produced, but some of the lyrics were weird and just didn't do much for me. Think 2 is generous

Can't really take this seriously. I know I'm not supposed to, but I can't take it as a joke either.

Oh, I really don't like Comfortably Numb. It's like they tried to do a Weird Al polka and miserably failed. It Can't Come Quickly Enough is quite nice though. I also like Return to Oz, but my cat won't stop meowing during it, so I think she has the opposite opinion.

Not for me

Honestly, not very enjoyable to listen to. They do a very unique take on Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb that requires a listen.

Didn’t care then and, after listening again, I don’t care now, sadly. I was hoping to dig it.

The album gets off to a terrible start with the faux R&B vocalist and a couple of songs that sound contrived. The “Staying Alive” version of Comfortably Numb is a nice novelty track. It’s interesting that this American band barely cracked the Billboard 200 but went 9X Platinum in the UK. I side with the Americans.

I've heard of the Scissor Sisters, but I couldn't tell you from where. Listening to the album it was hard to determine the time frame when it was released. There is a mix of disco, and late 90s alternative. There were parts of the album that were okay, but several tracks that I don't want to hear again because of the content. The music was okay.

At least it's over and I don't have to listen to this again.

Didn't do much for me.

Well... am I a fan of the falsetto? The comfortably numb cover is not my favorite. Ugh. There are a bunch of other albums that are rated at a 3 that are worse than this. But I just can't get why you'd want to do a bee-gees version of Comfortably Numb. Did disco have a renaissance that I didn't know about?

Pretty overrated imo. Bought this album on hype when it came out and this was the first time I had ever heard the whole thing. 2/5

I prefer Twisted Sister

Fav filthy/gorgeous Least fav Mary I was very uncomfortable listening to this idk why. Maybe I just don’t like the genre?

I had no clue what was up with this group before hearing this and was surprised at how poppy it was. Lots of Prince, MJ, and Bowie influence here, but I think those artists just do it much better. 4/10

This record is weird though not altogether terrible. IMHO it ranges from ‘sort of comedic but still not good’ (Tits On The Radio) to awful (Laura) to reprehensible (Comfortably Numb like WTF seriously) then later kind of Bran-Van eclectic (Filthy/Gorgeous, though TBF they don’t quite pull this off) to ‘hey that’s not /bad/“ (Music Is The Victim, It Can’t Come Quickly Enough) I’m really confused haha

Nice enough

Was never really into them, but I remember the music being a bit more fun.

It’s kind of crap

I absolutely hate this one. I hate the cover of Comfortably Numb, I hate how much the record starts to meander, and I hate that they never even dare to commit to their 80s pastiche fully. The only bright side: I Don't Feel Like Dancing is NOT on this record.

A sobering reminder that even transgressive gay people can be unbearably boring

Heh, vanha kunnon meemi Hesarin "tunnista bändi" -kuvasta.

Skip it!

I feel uncomfortably numb after hearing this one. Those vocals are not it.

mid as hell

That. Was. Bad. 1

I didn’t get Sister Scissors back when they were everywhere… I still don’t get them now. Should probably be a 2 star (I don’t mind the first 2 tracks) but the Comfortably Numb cover is so offensive I’m deducting a star.

Some decent songs and some bad. The pink floyd cover is unforgivable though

I haven't been leaving many reviews but I had to say something about their cover of Comfortably Numb. Absolute trash. Period.

I had this vague idea that I like the Scissor Sisters as a result of the renewed popularity of Let’s Have a Kiki. After slogging through this whiny record I can confidently say I do not. Couldn’t finish. RYM: N Saved a song: N

Sounds a little like it was made exclusively with toy instruments, including one of those midi keyboards that plays rudimentary beats and reverb. The minute the vocals came in I knew this wasn't for me. I want to say the producer had too many yes-men involved in making this album. I agree with very few musical decisions made here. Kudos to Scissor Sisters for making it happen.

Like if The Killers and The Beach Boys had a baby, but it was terrible.

LMAO WHY IS THIS IN HERE

Oh sweet Jesus no. This shite was EVERYWHERE at release, and we're still feeling the after effects now. Truly one of the worst releases of the 2000s.

First two songs are upbeat and fun. Then they play Comfortably Numb - a dull song by Pink Floyd - they fail to make it interesting and everything afterwards is pretty ordinary. I listen to this at the time when an older lady at work (who was probably younger than I am now) leant me the cd. Just like now I grew bored. It’s all kind of low energy Deee-Lite. Not entirely meritless especially considering the early 00s was a low point in general. 1.5.

попса ужасная, еще и comfortably numb испортили

Fy fan!

You dirty minded pigs!

This wasn't completely terrible, but I have to deduct a full rating point for what they did to Comfortably Numb.

Guess why I didn't like this album....

I don’t understand why they are in this list.

I was a bored listener

quite bland

Not a fan

As annoying as possible

Hated it at the time and didn't feel like listening to it again. I mean, come on, a cove of Pink Floyd's Comfortably numb in a Eurodance arrangement? Wtf.

This band definitely has chops and talent, but their strand of eclectic sound is a little too plain unenjoyable to listen to for me, soul sucking even.

1. laura - 0 2. mama - 0 3. numb - 1 4. mary - 1 5. Lovers - 1 6. Radio. - 1 7. Filthy - 1 8. Music - 1 9. Luck - 1 10. Quickly - 1.5 11. Oz - 1.5 12. Message - 0 13. Get it - 1

Like a Eurovision version of the glamrock. Songs are weak and I can't stand the vocal production, which is awfully unnatural. I kind of like the idea of combining modern sounds with more traditional guitar rock, but end result isn't any good. Pink Floud cover is just hideous.

sophisticated pop, heavily indebted to Elton John - but entirely forgettable.

Couldn't finish it

Laura Take Your Mama Comfortably Numb

I find this album unlistenable, its craft over content. All veneer

Stupid

Absolute fucking 2000s pop drivel. This album has about as much permanence as a shit circling the drain.

A cím jó volt

I hate this.

Safe to say I did not stay for the UK only tracks Ms. Matronic because this was shit. Genuinely had to listen to this in 3 go’s and had to listen to the actual Comfortably Numb after potentially the worst ever cover I’ve heard. They sounded like if Jamiroquai and the Bee Gees decided they would try and create the worlds worst album they could.

did not finish, but idk about their sound. it felt like they were aiming for some era of pop that i didnt like...

I really tried to find something nice to say about this album, but came up empty. Lock them up for that Pink Floyd cover.

https://youtu.be/3sIYe74sczE?si=-JtVMusL965Gl8ho My disappointment is immeasurable

Nothing I would otherwise listen to. Also the cover of Comfortably Numb is dogshit

Oof did not enjoy this at all

Music is indeed the victim.

In a nutshell: one trick pony. Raise your hand if you had a heated debate with someone about whether "covering Pink Floyd should be illegal" It's outlandish and disposable music. Top 40 radio fodder. The falsetto gets boring early. In retrospect I think some listeners see this as an album with guilty pleasure singles on it. And in some countries, you can say "tits" on the radio. Overall: 2/10

This album genuinely did nothing for me. I could not tell if it was older or more contemporary with the intention of sounding a bit older and had no intention of wasting the energy to look it up. I was bored more and more with each track and most I had to skip ahead after a little over a minute. I would never listen to this again willingly.

what if we made a song about fucking your mom and then followed it up with a cover of comfortably numb

💩💩💩💩💩

Couldn't get into it. 1/5

Nah not my thing at all.

Return to Oz is the only one i like

I genuinely hate everything about this album and am shocked to discover this band is still pulling millions of listeners. I would have thought this would be another miss by the author, taking a gamble on a current artist that would otherwise be forgotten to time. 1/5

HOT STEAMING ASS… I don’t think I’ve ever listened fo worse music in my lifetime. I somehow was able to add two song to my playlist that will likely eventually get removed. I cannot believe how annoying each of these songs sound and the singers voices are nails to a chalkboard. Never recommend me shit like this again album generator or we’re gonna have issues. 0/5 rating If I could give it that. :(

Couldn't make it through this one. Nope. Nope. Nope.

Jag hatar det här. Den där pink Floyd covern suger

The noughties were filled with many great bands coming off the back of Brit-pop and grunge scenes. Bands such as The White Stripes, The Strokes, The Killers, Arctic Monkeys, Gorillaz, Thrice, Finch, Emery, Linkin Park, Audioslave, Killswitch Engage, All That Remains, August Burns Red, Trivium, the list goes on and on. But then we also got Scissor Sisters by Scissor Sisters, a campy disco record trying to drag us kicking and screaming back into the seventies. The fact that the first four tracks of the album were released as singles shouts that these were what the band/producers/record label thought were the best songs. "If we put all the good songs first on the record then people might forget to turn it off and end up listening to it all!". Although how they were permitted to record that awful cover of Comfortably Numb is beyond me, and makes a mockery of the whole music industry.

Album reminds me of Disco and George Michael. Not really my thing. British bias comes out on this list once again, because few in the US cared about this album when it came out.

Wow. Not sure why I expected this to be better but it’s really not better than anything. Pretty pretty… pretty bad.

There’s nowhere else to start with this review than the criminal assassination of ‘Comfortably Numb’. Has there ever been a more heinous cover version? There are some fun tracks on here that might have doubled my rating, like ‘Take Your Mama’ for example.

boring.

Wanted to love this but just can’t vibe with the sound

tough one to get through. had to skip a track already. probably gonna end up being a 1/5

Absolutely awful. Only made it half way through the butchering of Comfortably Numb before I gave up. Hated it when it came out, and I still hate it now.

No thanks!

Sometimes the opening notes of a record will deceive you such that you are in for a complete surprise along the way. This is not that album. Scissor Sisters by Scissor Sisters is the other case; where the sonic qualities of the instruments from the start and the melody announced from the opening notes sets the stage for what is to come. When this happens, when an artist fully realizes a vision and is devoted to it consistently you may be in for a satisfying listening experience if the vision matches a vibe you desire. This is not that album for me. Scissor Sisters by Scissor Sisters is the other case; the one where what you’re hearing is a match for what is maddening about certain musics. Where the distance between the group or artist’s vision is so far removed from your desired vibe that you actively dislike the record even when there is nothing objectively wrong with it. This is the best one star album I’ve heard yet and I am confident it is someone’s five star record somewhere. I wouldn’t blame them. But I also wouldn’t give them control over the music in the car either.

One of the worst albums this list has given me.

Can’t believe it’s 20 years since this album was around. Remember it been pushed down my throat by the media and not been able to escape it. People describe it has a ‘fun’ record and they’re welcome to that opinion. But in my book it’s not fun but blasphemous to ruin a classic song like Comfortably Numb. Hated it then and more so today. It speaks volumes that you can more or less guarantee copies of the album will be on sale cheaply at every UK charity shop. A sign that this album was discarded largely into oblivion and rightly so. 0.1/5 28/3/24

Very strange album. Best song was an odd cover of a Pink Floyd song which was a pale imitation of the real thing.

Hating this so far. I could not be happier that I have never heard this Comfortably Numb cover before and hope to never hear it again. Falsetto voice is annoying - forced - trying too hard. Entire album sounds dated. Not standing up to the test of time. Like a poor man's version of Jamiroquai, far less timeless, and with stupid lyrics. I never need to hear this album again. Only three songs left now. I can't wait for this to be over. This should be part of the 1001 albums no one should ever hear again.

Pop, dance, disco, keys, male, mid, first tones already offended me, didn't like it back in the days, was awaiting the end so much - after the second song already... and than comfortably numb appeared - wtf! Why in this list?! and the stupid outro?! In total, not as bad as expected, but just not relevant...

No thanks.

Not available in Apple Music

second half got a little bit better but i still mostly hate this era of music. laura: what the fuck is this clown music comfortably numb: yikes

¿A alguien le gusta esto?

No thanks.

"Comfortably Numb" is a incredible cover, one of the best. The rest of the album is unappealing dance/ballad style music. Did not like.

Also not very bad but nothing super special about it. The comfortably numb cover was a little wack. Kind of mixes elo with a lot of weird pop tendencies from the late 80’s early 90’s? Not for me I think.

Like bleach for the ears

Tecno pop metido a engraçado. Ou seja, um tanto chato.

The Scissor Sisters should not be on a must-listen list of this depth and breadth. They are not original, they are not interesting, entertaining, ground-breaking or special, it's paint-by-numbers pop masquerading as alternative and it's just sinfully boring, annoyingly overplayed and they bastardised Comfortably Numb, making me uncomfortably angry. 1, fuck off.
