Youth And Young Manhood
Kings of LeonI recently saw a reel that described Kings of Leon as “Southern Fried Strokes.” I thought it was a stretch. Then i heard this album. It is not a stretch.

I’ll fight y’all.
This is good. I, however, am very tired and can’t keep up.
Utterly delightful. Willie is a treasure, and so are his takes on these songs
Fun, cinematic, funky. Enjoyed the first half a lot. Last Bongo in Belgium was my favorite
I’ve slept on my Queen in my adult life because…middle school boys like them? I guess? But wow, this is good stuff. Really ahead-of-its time sound. Really love ‘39. Not so crazy about Sweet Lady. Internal jury still out on the Prophet’s Song
When I hear someone mention the Grateful Dead, studio albums do not usually come to mind. But I haven’t heard a skip yet. This is right up my alley. Always interested me how the Dead seem so in a category of their own. Hard to play the Kevin Bacon game with them. But Till the Morning Comes could so easily be a Byrds/CSNY song. I get the hype. 5 stars
Probably my favorite Lennon album, and definitely a top tier Beatle solo album. Very raw and yet very crisply produced. The title track gets hate now but if you strip away the cynicism it’s as beautiful as you once thought. Jealous Guy is one of my favorite John songs but it could do without the Spector strings (same goes for How?) Really enjoyed I Don’t Wanna Be a Soldier Mama this time around. Really really love Oh Yoko! Just such an utterly John Lennon project.
Oh boy. Bush. Elementary school. If somebody asked me what life was like in 2004-2005 I would simply have them listen to this album. I remember the cynicism of that era well, despite being 9. This album was the coolest, punkest thing I could have imagined at the time. It’s been said that every teenager who heard The Velvet Underground & Nico started a band. The closest thing our generation might have to that is American Idiot. They’re not even my taste particularly but im thinking Green Day has got to be the greatest rock band of my lifetime
I did not enjoy this very much. I respect it I suppose. Maybe I’m missing something, but this is a subjective exercise and I didn’t like it, so I don’t owe it a good review.
Quite pleasant listen. Makes me want to get more into older folk standards. Feels like the bridge between traditional and Dylanesque. Not transcendent but very solid
Liking this more than I thought I would. Nothing intelligent to say about it, just that it was really fun to listen to. Punk and post punk have long been a musical blind spot for me so I’m excited that this generator is giving me a chance to fix that. Lots of cool sounds here, and oddly catchy stuff.
Lives up to the hype. Really enjoy the production and the lyrics are as clever as anything I’ve heard. Excited to listen again.
Did not enjoy most of it. Did kinda like Setting Sun, and that’s because it vaguely reminded me of Tomorrow Never Knows. Where Do I Begin and Private Psychedelic Reel were neat too. But most of it is just not fun for me to listen to. And that’s fine.
I get it. Kinda fun at times. Glad I know it. Not really my cup of tea, but appreciated. 3 stars
Cool sounds. Cool British vibes. Quite lovely. 4 stars
Just ride it.
More of an Off the Wall guy. But this is crisp. Quincy and the King of Pop. Don’t know how people dislike this.
Can dig. More Celtic stuff please.
I remember Keith Richards lamenting that rock n roll had lost the roll and just become rock. This one still has the roll. Loved Sweet Virginia and Loving Cup a lot.
I did groan when I saw it was Aerosmith. Perhaps unfairly. Because after giving it a chance, I concede it has a few moments. The hits are good. No More No More is a rocker if you don’t listen to the lyrics. Their roller coaster at Disney World is fun.
Had no idea this many hits were on the same album. After loving Skynyrd at first, I disliked this band for years for no good reason. These songs rock.
This gives me a hint as to why people love the Cure so much.
Last three tracks are immaculate. Everything else is real solid.
Kept looking for reasons to not be impressed. But I did not find them.
It’s good. Really liked Seventh Seal, Old Man’s Back, and Duchess. I would have given it four stars if all the same songs had been sung by Van Morrison
Cool enough. Maybe not the right day for me to be listening to this.
Really impressive sampling and wordplay. Like it much better than the debut. 4 stars
Impressive. Not super my cup of tea. But a little bit my cup of tea! 3 stars
James Brown hasn’t usually done it for me the way other soul singers have. But I get the hype on this one. The raw energy, the tight band. Nice.
I mean. Historical significance aside, every song is a banger. The Dylan songs are the best. Cosmic American music.
A lot of my favorite music wouldn’t exist without this. Pretty neat
Mesmerizing. The poetry, his voice, the instrumentation choices.
I once heard it said that “there are two types of people: those who like hip-hop, and those who haven’t heard Illmatic.” I was 18 when I heard that, so I bought the CD from McKay’s. And nine years later, I think they were right
For some reason not what I thought Hole sounded like. A pleasant surprise. The poppy jangly stuff was my favorite. “Awful” was up my alley.
Best enjoyed as the soundtrack to an Iceland travel slideshow. Cool stuff here. Quite compelling at its best, but the rest is eh.
Some cool stuff here. I see how it ushered in an era of a genre I enjoy but rarely seek out.
Ali Shaleed Muhammad is no joke. 4.5 stars, round up to 5
I was stressed. This was sorta stressful. Not its fault.
This is one I never would have listened to without this list. But it’s quite cool! Especially the more 60s-infused stuff
Always just assumed American Girl was the opening track for some reason. Seems like a first track on first album kinda thing. But it’s not. It is, however, the best on this album. An album I otherwise still enjoyed.
Very of its time. Some of it ages poorly based on what we know about the guy now. But I enjoy the production and songwriting quite a bit. I have a small sample size but I think I prefer Whiskeytown to Ryan’s solo stuff
Caught me on a bad day.
Had its moments for me
Somewhat compelling. May revisit.
Tend to like Neil’s folkier stuff best but this was great.
Had no idea. What a cool sound.
Really had me at first but sorta lost me
It’s aight I guess. Was a little intrigued by it being the bridge from the grunge era, and the fact that Grohl did everything on it. But I just wasn’t hooked.
Appealing but not particularly memorable to me.
I think we gotta make it 5
A few cool tunes among them, including Alright, but overall this did not do much for me
This was produced by Charlie Daniels? THAT Charlie Daniels? The keys are fun, really enjoy the fusion of psychedelic, hard rock, country, and jazz. Weird but cool.
I did try
Interesting. Don’t know how this always flew under my radar. Feels like Queen meets Cheap Trick. Album art looks like it’s from the 21st century. Not in love with it but happy I know it now
More interesting than expected
I’ve heard this band’s sound changes up a lot. This one sounds like Jack White meets the Strokes. Not in love with the songs but the guitars sound very cool.
Yeah. Enjoyed it quite a bit on a dreary March day.
Very cool. Will keep around. Every song is like a whole individual universe
She’s a very skilled singer. The songs do little for me, and this came out about a year before I became aware of top 40 radio, so the nostalgia factor isn’t there. The album is a bit long.
Best band name. They’re lucky that copyright got in their way. Music that is clearly influential but not my cup of tea
Beautiful voice. Cool ethereal chamber folk. Foul guy these days.
It’s good, and obviously important. But TO ME, there’s nothing that sets it apart. Songs not original, and while they’re fun to listen to, none of them really showcase the unique magic of Elvis.
Paul’s second favorite U2 album
Can’t get enough of that bass.
Liked this way better than the debut.
Obviously.
Charming with an edge
Cool stuff. Cool artist
Enjoyed a lot. Nothing more here
Did not love it quite as much as I wanted to (sonically, anyway), but still pretty cool
Vocals are great. I see why it belongs on the 1001 cause it embodies that 70s hard rock thing so well. But the problem is the mediocrity of the songs. Title track doesn’t even rock as hard as I remember. Can’t Get Enough is pretty good.
Had some charm. Hair metal revival somewhat more enjoyable than expected
My only complaint is that the quantity and quality are both so high. Throw a few bad songs on there for once, would ya Steve?
The old college try.
Lodi and Bad Moon Rising are ethereal. Everything else is damn good.
I get it. A bit strong for my tea at times but
Nostalgia gives it an extra star for me.
Not doing a whole lot for me. Can see the influence on Alf rock though.
I’m on it.
Ain’t nothing wrong with doing the most from time to time.
Feel like I’m in a Wes Anderson movie and getting bullied by bohemians.
Sounds pretty much how I expected for the band behind Our House. And it rocks.
Went in prepared to hate it. Liked this WAY more than I thought I would. Like a 90s alt Elvis Costello.
Been a good week (musically only)
Not every song is groundbreaking, but thanks to her (not even at its peak yet) voice, everything sounds great.
I do not like it a whole lot. But I like it a little bit.
Back and forth between thinking “poor man’s Kinks” and “as good as a Kinks album.” Love the genre but may need more time with this one to enjoy
Cool Aussie vibe and good songs. Thank you for introducing me to this.
Politically interesting. Misogynistic. Sonically decent but not good enough to ignore the misogyny
I like some of this band’s stuff. I was rooting for this album, and it had its moments.
Everything 70s hard rock wanted to be. The best of Classic Rock Radio core
Feeling a little punked out at the moment. Maybe later will be a better time to revisit this.
Carrie Brownstein is funny. I like the Kinks album cover. Philosophically I like this (I think). Sonically it’s alright. Some of these reviews are pretty sexist.
Great guitar work here. Harmonies slick as always. The more Britishy folk vibes are here. Would have given it 4 but giving it 5 cause the haters made me love it more.
Intriguing at times. Overstimulating at times.
Good songs, good vocals, good musicians. Took me a couple songs to buy in, but once I did it was delightful.
Cool man.
Had never heard this before. Very British. Intrigued enough to give it 4
I am team Cure for all Smiths-Cure beef. But it’s hard to deny the quality here.
I recently saw a reel that described Kings of Leon as “Southern Fried Strokes.” I thought it was a stretch. Then i heard this album. It is not a stretch.
I am a defiant millennial. I will protect Coldplay and give them additional unearned stars.
Not quite as compelling as Massive Attack. But some cause for interest.
If I’d been old enough this would have turned me into Billy Graham. Gee whiz. White guy saying the n word right out of the gate, music is unpleasant to the ears, and the guy is a predator. Not going back to this one. Dadgum.
I’ll fight y’all.
Rocks hard. I’ll let other people enjoy it.
Yes please. Great rapping, great lyrics, sonically smooth. I’ll be back.
I can only be in the bathroom during business lunch for so long.
Cool sounds here.
Not really my thing. Was cool here and there.
Some sad Sgt. Pepper energy. liked it a lot more than the first Beck album I got on here.
It’s no Thriller. But few things are.
Tribe to Proto-Paak
Heaven forbid a fun guy have fun making fun music with his fun friends. Always a favorite, not a bad track here.
Alright alright. Sounds like nothing of its time. Bee Gees and Elton John meet the 2010s. Except it was 2004.
Naturally.
Had its moments. Could have done with slightly less of that organ.
Proto-post-punk, diggable.
Willie
Hits and some misses
Did little for me.
This is *that* Michael Franti??
Great with a melody and a song. Surprised at all the hate.
This took me somewhere. Never really heard anything like it
Kind of obnoxious. I like their later stuff though, call me if that’s on the list
Memphis magic, baby
There’s something here. Just perhaps not mine
Pretty cool.
Ain’t no Scrantonicity.
Yeah boi. Ya like absolute jazz
Cool enough. I really like Light My Fire. Good organ playing. Tad overrated.
This dude was in his mid 60s?
Not terrible, but not enjoyable for me. Also, not funny enough to make up for the sounds I don’t like.
Don’t mind if I do!
It worked to a degree. Could have used fewer racial slurs
Something about Love just hits right for me. Psychedelic haters be damned.
And Through the Wire andGames without Frontiers were neat
Man, I am just not there yet.
Not a miss here
The hits are great, everything else is good. Might need to dive into this band
It’s aight
Oh wow.
A poor man’s Miseducation.
Hail the Mick Taylor era
I WANNA KNOW
Wanted to give this a chance, since I remember how much some of my friends loved this band in middle school. So I gave it a chance.
I’m here for it.
I’ve heard about this album plenty. Now I think I haven’t heard about it enough. Pop masterpiece
The production is excellent, I sure hope the producer is a nice guy with tolerant attitudes.
Not my day. Not the album’s fault *necessarily*
Most enjoyable metal album I’ve heard in awhile. Some cool stuff here.
I like the concept, but I’m just not that into the execution
A delight to the senses, I’ll have what I’m having.
The hits are great, couldn’t get into much else
Not what I came for. Lots of similar music might have been saved by nostalgia, but not this one
Very back and forth on this. Can’t commit to loving or hating it
Really intriguing parts. Other parts i simply could not get into. Would need more time with it.
You know, I could actually get into some of it.
The seeds are there.
Yessir
Couldn’t follow. Was in and out, but there’s cool stuff here
I get it
This shit rocks.
Here we are
Like them Antipodians
Nah
Cool stuff
Don’t quite have it in me.
Utterly electric.
Uplifting goofy aggression on a bad day.
They’re THEM
They sold me.
Never met a Creedence record I didn’t like
One of the better electronic albums on here
Ain’t it for me. Not today at least. Liked a few songs though.
Yeah I can dig.
Funnest electronic album on here so far
Came out many years earlier than I thought.
Autumnal af
Sounds alright. Its inclusion on this list confuses me.
Tad long, but most of it’s great
Wanted to like this more. Call me a snowflake but this is a bit too shocking to really enjoy.
Couldn’t fully embrace the kitsch this time. But I embraced it a bit.
Best enjoyed as, well, a Southern Rock Opera. Loved it all.
Absolute vibe. The bridge from bebop to Stax
Pleasant enough.
Hit me with lots of nostalgia despite not remembering most of the songs. Extremely of the time.
You never really want to peak on track 1
Rocks hard. Janis is the best
BB Kai
Nostalgia factor earns an extra point
Good to be back.
