Wonderful Rainbow
Lightning BoltA one-paced, incessant racket.
A one-paced, incessant racket.
All Nick Drake’s out is magnificent and this is no exception. Stunning album.
A big part of my youth and as important now as it was then. Stunning songs, perfectly performed. A stellar debut appearance by Brian Johnson, a rhythm section you could set your watch by, Angus doing his thing but as ever, it’s Malcolm’s balls to the wall rhythm guitar that is the real star turn. Stone wall classic.
Highly skilled but ultimately dull, egocentric, screeching drivel.
Great songs and a stunning voice shorn of the schmaltzy augmentation often lavished on country songs. 4/5
Some fine songs on this early concept album but lacking the immediacy of other Kinks output.
All of Nick Drake’s recorded output is from the very top shelf, but this one is my favorite. Loved it since the day I first heard it. Some days, when all is not quite right, only this album will do.
I’m late to the hip hop party but enjoyed this album’s vitality.
Perfectly crafted songs, beautifully performed. Though, having just listened to the whole album for the first time in years, I’m not sure how much I have missed it.
Prototype heavy metal. Interesting artifact but there is a reason few people remember them.
One of the best rock albums ever. Barreling along threw sensational songs it’s pure excitement all the way. A tour de force of an album. Top drawer.
Appreciate the musicianship but I hated this and unlikely to ever try it again. Dirge
Usual queen bombastic approach but none the worse for that. Glorious nonsense.
Generic seventies rock from a bunch of Stones wannabes. Little new or innovative.
Timeless classic. Still vital, still relevant
Love the Pixies and this is one of their best.
Seminal album. Off the very top shelf
Where it all started
All Nick Drake’s out is magnificent and this is no exception. Stunning album.
A guilty pleasure for. Supreme musicianship all round. Love it.
Background music at best. Heard it for the first time today but will not live long in the memory.
Dated and overwrought. Not a fan.
Genre defining album from a seminal artist. Still sounds as fresh now as it did almost 50 years ago. Stunning.
Enjoyable if a little cartoonish. By the end of the album it all felt very similar with little light and shade.
Len’s beautiful poetry set to music played on a Casio organ. The artistry shines through but would prefer to hear it without the 1980’s gloss.
Powerhouse album from the ultimate rock band. Some extraordinary riffs and superb musicianship. Stellar
Tired old metal trope. Nothing new here, hackneyed rigs that have been aired a thousand times. Not for me Clive.
Good listen but not my favorite Bowie opus
Never listened to Neu before but really liked it. Rhythmically hypnotic and futuristic sounding even at nearly 50 years old.
A damn fine voice but a searingly bland batch of songs. Lacking in any depth or soul. File under nice but dull.
Never a dull moment in this gloriously daft but thoroughly enjoyable album. Every time I hear it, I love it all over again.
Morrissey never reached the peaks of the Smiths. Musically proficient with quirky lyrics but it’s hard to separate the art from the artists frankly abhorrent views.
Glorious album from start to finish. Hasn’t aged a day. Perfect pop songs performed perfectly. What more can you ask. Top shelf.
Awesome band, as tight as two coats of paint with one of the great soul. interpreters
Where it all started.
Good example of the genre but a bit samey. Felt like the same song repeated several times. Time to mix it up a bit fellas.
Great voice, top musicians but the saccharine sweet, schmaltzy, over produced, bland country sound get tiring after a while. I didn’t hate it but am unlikely to listen to it ever again.
Van’s poppiest, most accessible album is a tour de force. No filler on this platter. Never dates and always hits the spot
I should like this but find it grates a bit, always has. Love African music but this is too diluted / polluted. Sounds dated now, I won’t listen again
Fine but, for me it’s no the classic others seem to claim
Epoch defining
Man, this is dull. Insipid electro-doodling without an ounce of soul.
Ground breaking at the time but now sounds dark, dated and indulgent
Some filler but mostly killer songs in this stellar set. Hugely influential and full of joy.
A fine voice but often devolves into histrionic warbling of the lowest order which grates after a while.
Never been a big fan of funk but this is irresistible good fun and has some mighty grooves. I might be a convert!
Fine voice but sounds dated. Lyrics are phony. Who talks like that in California?
nice ethereal sounds
Typically hip hop isn’t my bag. Musically interesting but lyrics are infantile. Nothing to say.
Still vibrant, still awesome, still essential
Musically interesting, lyrically questionable
A blast from my past, literally. Where it all started and still stands up today. Primitive production but the rawness adds to the excitement
A one-paced, incessant racket.
Where it all started. Imperious album. Still vibrant. Love it
A big part of my youth and as important now as it was then. Stunning songs, perfectly performed. A stellar debut appearance by Brian Johnson, a rhythm section you could set your watch by, Angus doing his thing but as ever, it’s Malcolm’s balls to the wall rhythm guitar that is the real star turn. Stone wall classic.
Good example of 1980’s pop. Too slick and soulless for my taste though.
The king of the blues and always will be.
Groundbreaking, fresh as ever
Technically superb but some how lacking in edge. Something charismatic or soulful to set it apart. A bit bland to my ears.
Only found this through 1001ATHBYD and absolutely love. Stone wall classic.
Very stylish album and great to listen to after all this time. Love it.
Pivotal in the evolution of rock and roll but these days the album is more of a historical landmark than a regular listening item.
Super cool album. Hypnotic sounds and ethereal voice. Was less familiar with this than the earlier albums but will be listening again. Some tracks reminded me of joy division.
Traditional Irish delivered with a punk aesthetic… what’s not to love. Probably the most holistic Pogues album with the best songs. Love it.
More poetry than music but wonderfully rhythmic and hugely enjoyable.
Haven’t listened to this in years. Interesting concept and musically impressive but I find the screechy voice irritating.
Top shelf.
I really tried with this. I want to like jazz but just find it irritating. I’m sure the musicianship is impressive but i just don’t get it. An aimless racket. Emperors new clothes.
Of its time. The Artistry is undeniable but not sure I’ll ever listen again
Highly skilled but ultimately dull, egocentric, screeching drivel.
Loved this back I the day but not sure how relevant it is today.
My low expectations were met. Interesting rhythmically but mostly an unlistenable racket and as for those vocals … what’s wrong with that lad?
The 90s in one record. Bloody love it.
What a racket. I love rock music but this is just puerile shouting.
Interesting album that I had never heard before.
Peerless.
Perfectly nice pop music. Well written but lacking a bit of oomph. Didn’t me want to dance or cry, generally signs that music has energy and soul.
Some great tunes here plus some awful dirge on side 2 that surely no one could listen to more than once.
The Stones in their pomp. Almost like a greatest hits LP and second only to Exile on Main Street in my opinion. Top drawer.
Having not heard this for years I found this quite disappointing. HFine musicianship but not enough variation. Of its time
