Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Arctic MonkeysAll sounded the same. Nothing really melodic.
All sounded the same. Nothing really melodic.
Impressive given the whole thing was improvised live.
I imagine this is what I would sound like singing high on LSD. Some interesting things musically, but otherwise just ok.
I can appreciate the art, but just not my thing. I like the few songs that were big hits.
Hard not to like when you have heard it a bunch. Some classic guitar solos. True album experience.
Terrible. I’d like to see the drummer on video. Nuts. Only saving grace was it’s short.
Don’t mind queen but this album was just ok.
This album makes me think of my dad in his 20s.
Never heard of them. The use of horns in this album were interesting. Unique sounds throughout - from Indian to country / blue grass.
All sounds the same.
Didn’t finish it. Better than some of the other similar albums.
Has memories attached so I love it. Played a lot of these songs while in a big band. Grandmother also loved Sinatra.
But some of them are just weird.
Another weird album but I couldn’t help also liking it. Zydeco, Afro-Cuban, a little jazz - Gumbo is definitely the best metaphor.
Somebody talking under their breath for 30 min. No thanks.
Ok but not my thing.
As far as pop goes, it’s good.
Merging of cultures is cool but only liked a few songs.
This list of albums was made by someone with a particular taste in music.
Who doesn’t like Van Halen? Great album.
Never listened to this whole album. I liked the songs I knew.
There are a lot of songs I love. Sir Duke is one I remember friends trying to arrange just for fun. Think I am drawn to the horns in this album. Could do without the vamping in some songs, but generally like anything Stevie Winder does.
Some good songs. Never heard this album.
Where did this musical variety come from? I like Afro-Cuban jazz, so this provides some sense of the Afro side. I like all the percussion - Djembe, right? It was interesting.
Terrible. 0 stars.
Unique voice for sure. Sort of rock, sort of pop. No idea what he was saying but it was ok overall.
Most interesting to me is her singing over the bass line and percussion. It wasn’t bad.
Eh. Too close to the last album by same group.
Had to find on YouTube. I liked it.
I don’t know. The grooves were cool. The singing and rapping? were just ok.
Kind of liked it.
Would be ok without the lyrics.
Blues meets rock and the dude can sure sing. Heard this album before. Found myself getting lost listening to the bass line this time.
Unique sound. Couple of huge hits. Can’t go wrong with Al Green.
There is better country / bluegrass out there, but this was at least interesting. Reminds me of my wife’s country church and her aunt/uncle singing.
Not my favorite but not terrible.
The song or two I knew was good, but then I just tuned it out. Nothing unique.
The different voices made this album interesting. I have no idea what they were saying though.
If my dogs bark at it the whole time, it’s no good. In 2024, I can at least appreciate the mixing of these sounds, but I didn’t like it in 1994 when my brother(s) were listening to it, and I still don’t like it today. So so dark.
I like the Beatles but I’m not sure I love this album. There are a few iconic songs on it. I love blackbird. I can also see how this album influenced others subsequently.
Not bad, just not a fan of his voice.
All these tunes are part of the American songbook. Classics. Willie has his own interpretation, which I appreciate. I liked it.
On some songs, I couldn’t decide if this band wanted to be like Phantom of the Opera or Michael Jackson’s thriller album. It’s not the worst we’ve heard, but it’s not great.
I’ve never listened to this whole album though I have probably heard these songs many times. The second half of the album was better than the first half. I have always liked the police and Sting. They have been sort of genre crossers.
James Brown vamping at the Apollo? Pretty cool. The horns are the best.
Sounded like Arrested Development. As far as rap goes, it was pretty good.
Don’t like his voice too much, but it was ok. One song had a random marimba.
This was a neat concept, but the orchestration needed work on many songs. The huge hits were probably the best. Love the idea, just needed work on the execution.
The King of Blues! Can’t go wrong.
The most interesting songs on this album are those that juxtapose a soul/funk bass line against a rock/electronic guitar and vocal. Those songs drew me in.
Not terrible. Lulled me in as it went along.
Too much yelling.
I like the jazzy, big band sounding songs. I can hear her influence on others I like.
Like his voice but album was sort of weird.
Some good songs but not the whole album.
If this is the birth of Indie Rock, I am glad it didn’t end here.
Ok but nothing memorable.
Interesting album. Lots of political commentary that wasn’t over the top and then that one jazz tune that was self reflective. I found myself straining to listen to the actual lyrics.
Wasn’t huge into REM back when, but seems like my brothers and cousins were so have heard this album many times. It’s one I could listen to again.
Not my thing.
Muddy Waters captures the blues for me. Straight out of Clarksdale, MS in the heart of the Delta. Have to be in the right mood for it, but there are few better.
Heard most of these. At first I thought they were all starting to sound the same but then the back half of the album switched things up.
First few songs were awful. Dude was struggling to make a tune. Got better as it went.
Hard rock? Metal? Alternative? What is this? Never got into Incubus but this guy can sing for sure.
Good enough to just have playing in the background and ignore.
No thanks.
Not sure why I like this screaming better than other screaming, but I do. Maybe it’s the variety of songs - the melodic ones that come after the yelling ones. The voice isn’t great, so it’s not that. My 45-year old self only likes about half this double album so 3 stars.
Background noise. Ok, but not the background noise I’d pick first.
These people were high when they recorded this album. This is barely music.
Reminded me of a folk singer I like. It was pleasant.
Some good tunes. Could easily listen to again.
Was hoping for better. Found myself tuning out.
Didn’t realize he had written many of these songs. I enjoyed it.
I can hear the influence - sits between the blues and rock n roll and probably carries over to soul and funk. Super interesting to listen to with that lens. Otherwise, probably not something I’d choose again.
Didn’t expect to even want to listen. This is an artistic album. Definitely worth the listen. Not sure I’d go to it again though.
I don’t know. Hard to give lots of stars to garbage.
Lots of international sounds. Lots of blending of genres. Hoky at times, especially the ending. Nothing special.
List needs more variety.
Liked it more because it was different than so many of the last ones.
Middle school me gives this a 5. Adult me gives it a 4. Listened to this album a lot as a kid.
Not for me. Tried to have an open mind, but nope.
Solid background noise.
I like the Eagles, but not sure about this whole album.
Haven’t listened to a ton of Radiohead, but I liked this album.
Pleasant but not memorable.
Pretty innovative. Don’t care for most of the lyrics, but the sounds are cool.
Entertaining. Like going to the theater.
Sounds like Mary J. Blige sometimes. Some random sounds in this album. No idea what she was saying but it wasn’t awful sounding.
I am sure these cats led the way on making weird sounds with rock instruments.
The tunes with Spanish guitar were cool. Thought I heard Chewbacca at one point.
Pretty good blues album.
Not a huge fan. All sounds the same except the hits.
At least interesting. Did I hear the Lion King?
Not the greatest voice but some interesting beats and arrangements. I was attentive which says something.
Great album.
Sort of Beatles like but not as good.
Reminded me of the movie Love Actually.
Like a grandpa with laryngitis singing on his deathbed, but somehow really interesting. I listened intently.
Nothing special to me.
I don’t hate it. Her voice is an acquired taste but not bad.
Made me think of a high school music student sitting down to compose their random thoughts.
Kind of cool to think how different this album is from the previous rap albums.
Sad but it fit my mood when I was listening so for that it gets more stars.
There are 3 songs I really like. The songs with guitar solos get too repetitive.
Not sure why this one is in the list?
Random. A little strange.
Listened to whole album and only remember Stand.
Pleasant.
Not memorable but fine.
Interesting at times. Like an orchestration. Different than I expected.
The first song was just weird. It got better but not great.
Not my thing.
Not sure what to make of the whole thing, but it was interesting at least.
Just ok.
It was fine.
Was never a huge Nirvana fan, but this seems like a classic album / moment.
A few cool songs - the first one, especially. Just ok overall.
Popular I know and the hits are good, but not a huge fan of the voice.
Listened to it yesterday and honestly can’t remember. I think the first song was cool and the rest just ok.
Acceptable 80s album. Not my favorite but not terrible.
Not what I expected at all. Better.
Strange album. All over the place.
Compared to some others, easy to listen to and a great voice.
All over the place but sort of interesting. I think I listened twice by accident though, so that tells you how little it grabbed my attention.
I know this is a classic album but I like about 3 songs. Was never a huge Nirvana fan.
Rather enjoyed this album. It was pleasant.
Eclectic and interesting but not my favorite.
Didn’t mind it because it was just upbeat background noise.
Eh.
The drummer was insane. I could only find one song I really liked. It was the melodic one.
Not terrible, but not my favorite.
Interesting sound. Sort of blues, some jazz, some pop.
Nothing special and some strange songs.
Unique voice. Sort of soothing. Didn’t hate it.
