The Downward Spiral
Nine Inch NailsI'm sorry I know a lot of you guys fw Trent but I'm gonna be honest I don't really get it. Most of this stuff is barely listenable.

This was my first full listen of Aja. I had previously only been familiar with a few Steely Dan singles. Home At Last was a stand out track for me- excellent jazzy guitar solo and fills. The bluesy solos midway through I Got The News and Josie were really smooth too. I love the bass groove and vocal melody of Josie, but I'm not big on the actual lyrics. I didn't care much for Deacon Blues- the Crimson Tide reference was pretty cringey. Black Cow, Aja, and Peg were mid for me- technically proficient and I can appreciate the craftsmanship, but they just didn't resonate with me much. Overall I enjoyed the music throughout the album a lot, but the vocals and lyrics were VERY hit and miss for me.
(First full listen of Remain In Light) Bam! Right out the gate with one of the funkiest grooves I've heard in a minute from Born Under Punches, and the digital synth midway through too... Really solid opening track. The electronic blips among the congas and staccato guitar in Crosseyed and Painless are really neat. Love the guitar fills and solo in The Great Curve. Oh I definitely recognize Once In A Lifetime. I've heard it before for sure. It's a good one. The groove and beat of Houses in Motion are top notch and the horns are a nice touch. Seen and Not Seen was a standout track for me. Everything from the ominous background keys, beat, poppy bass groove and cryptic lyrics. Really loved Listening Wind as well. Possibly my favorite track on the album, but it is very hard to decide. Probably a tie between this one and Born Under Punches (which I know sounds wild because they are very different songs but that just speaks to the range of this album and how it excels in a variety of styles). The echoey harmonies and blippy synth beeps of Listening Wind work really well against the dark lyrics and rhythm. Wow, just when I thought it couldn't get darker, The Overload takes us deeper to close side two out. Yet another solid track on a masterpiece of an album. Overall I love the use of experimental polyrhythms, dark/mystical imagery and Afrofunk fusion. 10/10 album
Very familiar with this one already, but it never disappoints. Simply one of the best rock albums of the 90s. No notes.
I believe this is my first ever introduction to Depeche Mode. I have heard the group's name before but I don't think I ever got around to listening to them. I really vibed with The Things You Said and Strangelove. The Things You said is my favorite track on the album. I really resonated with it and felt the music and lyrics in my bones. To Have and to Hold is another in this vein. The dark intensity pierces right through the soul and completely envelopes you. I also liked the conversation intro, reminiscint of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. Nothing has a really funky jungle beat and nice little melody. Lyrics weren't exceptional or anything but not bad either. Less intense of a song but definitely a fun groove and an enjoyable listen. Never Let Me Down Again and Behind The Wheel were just okay. I didn't really care for Sacred and Little 15 much. Not really sure why, just a vibes thing. I Want You Now is unnecessarily horny in the cringiest way it possible, which is a shame because the song is excellent minus the lyrics. Pimpf got my anxiety going a bit and was almost frightening- so not my favorite track but id rank it somewhere in the middle because any song that can elicit a visceral response is a work of art in my book. Overall I love the dark, new wave 80s sound and passionate vocals. They remind me a lot of The Smiths who I quite enjoy. I think I'll check out more of their discography in the future based on this listen.
Very familiar with this one. Love The Strokes. Easy 5 star.
I can understand why my great grandparents liked this kind of music back in the day but it's really just not my thing. Very impressive vocals though, I will say that.
Good album. I think I've heard most of the songs before. Maybe one or two new ones, but Price/AFKAP is always a good time.
Huh... It's like.. Dark Bowie? I dig it.
Who's Gonna Take The Weight? 💯😤✊ First listen of this album and truthfully I think the first I've heard of Gang Starr 🫣 but 🫶
Never really got into Metallica. They have some good stuff but overall they are kind of hit and miss with me. That being said, the black album has many of the ones I was previously familiar with.
I definitely thought Supertramp was a different band lol I didn't realize they were British Prog. I actually kinda dig it. Edit: upon further research they ARE the band I thought they were but I think I was expecting more of a late 70s pop vibe because I only had heard the Breakfast in America singles previously. This album is quite different but I actually did enjoy it. Hide In Your Shell is really good. I like "the fire's becoming colder" lyric a lot. The piano in Asylum, especially at the end, reminds me of Come Sail Away by Styx and also the chimes in Sunday Morning by The Velvet Underground. The piano and flute in If Everyone Was Listening 🫶 "WHAT IS YOUR COSTUME TODAY? AND WHO ARE THE PROPS IN YOUR PLAY?" ❤️😭 Probabaly second only to the title track for favorite song on album. The guitar and piano in Crime of the Century are just so good. AND THE SAX OUTRO??!??! 💯 I'm a sucker for a good sax outro. There's a mix of 5/5 songs and 3/5 songs on here for me so I'm giving it a solid 4/5.
First listen (with exception of End of the World as We Know It) Excellent political commentary across the whole album. I should really check out more R.E.M.
Do ya like... Jazz?
They're like if toxic masculinity was a band. Some pretty wild wah effect solos though.
I unironically love albums that can't decide what genre they are.
Easy 5 star
It's just not The Queen Is Dead. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me and Paint A Vulgar Picture are the stand out tracks for me.
41 minutes of schreechy, squealing, headache-inducing chaos. Entirely too much going on and if anyone tells you they find this album sonically pleasing, they are lying to you. I award this album no points, and may God have mercy on its soul.
Solid classic S&G album. America, Overs, Mrs. Robinson, and At the Zoo are my favorites. The spoken word tracks are neat little intermissions and I always like when an album has a theme/reprise. Only note is that I wish it was longer than 29 minutes.
no thanks
I respect the wild solos but I'm just really not that in to thrash metal
Velvet Underground & Nico is better but WL/WH is still a solid album.
Oui oui 🇫🇷🥖📯
A few interesting tracks but... weird ... 2 star
I mean some of it was alright but so many decent tracks were ruined by horrible screeching squeals during the last 30-45 seconds wtf is that
I got a different Hives album (Tyrannosaurus Hives) in a separate album project I'm currently doing. These are the first two Hives albums I've heard but I like them. Their sound reminds me of Anti-Flag. 4 star
Maybe it's just Guitar Hero nostalgia but damn... The Them Bones solo hits different every time.
THIS is your king?!?? ...Sus Black people made much better blues / rock n roll in the 1950s. Yet this cringe white dude gets title "king" of rock n roll... Curious. Something something overthrow the monarchy something something no gods no masters
Honestly where do the French get off
