Tommy
The WhoI really like the who but judging this as an album it wasn’t for me. Wayyy too long. Tim said it’s a ‘rock opera’ which I Fournier a bit cringe. I wonder if other ‘musicals’ make the list

I am a bit prejudice against Bob Dylan for no reason other than it being fun to not like him. I tried to listen to this with an open mind but I honestly found it so dull. His voice is ok but looking at this as an album I felt it was not helped by it's length.
I wish I knew more about music so that I could write something that articulates what I think is good about this album, but sadly I don't know much about music. So my poor ramblings really won't do it justice. I love this album, I don't think there is a setting that wouldn't be improved by listening to this. I struggle with more experimental jazz and find some forms of 'New York rom com' jazz a bit dull (let's not even talk about Buble jazz) but Miles Davis fits so well as a form that I think most people could access and enjoy but yet is experimental and exciting. It is perfection. I've probably listened 6 times today.
I can't admit to really listening to the album and I actually felt stressed when I heard it was Metallica. I have listened to some Metallica via Tim over the years and it always makes me feel quite stressed. I like some of there 'softer' tunes and I can appreciate their skill. I would never listen to this album on my own but I quite enjoy it in the right setting - very specifically a Metal bar in Hackney. I think metalheads seem like friendly people and so two stars for skill and a nice subculture.
Good album. I liked his voice and the stories but as I wouldn’t listen to it again it has to be a 2 from me.
This is a very nostalgic album for me so I found it hard to listen to independently of my childhood memories of hearing my dad play prog rock. And why even try? I love the madness of prog rock, the musical themes and crazy long instrumentals. This is a pretty solid Yes album. Starship Trooper was a standout song to me.
This is definitely a fun album. I started out really enjoying this but it got a bit weary as time went on. 'Jump, Jive' is a classic and I could really picture having a lot of fun dancing around. I recognise a lot of these songs but I’m not sure how many were originals or covers.
Listened in the day and thought it was a fairly average album. Hard rock not so much my thing. Listened in the evening after red wine and did lots of air guitar to Free Bird and it lifted the whole album for me. Poison whiskey also a stand out song. Everything else was a bit meh.
He has a really lovely voice and I think the songs sound (to my untrained ear) proper good musically speaking. I like the catchy poppy tunes although I didn’t looove them. Sledgehammer is very fun. I think ‘don’t give up’ has been ruined for me by being used in charity adverts.
I liked this. Improved by headphones. Enjoyed the grungy heavy songs. Also liked factory and Mary Jane? Probably wouldn’t listen again. The theme of this group for me is that I like songs that are the famous hits. Is that because they are better or I’m just a basic bitch?
First five minutes at five star. The rest is too random for me. I didn’t hate the industrial clunking but the voice was freaky.
I listened to this album on the way to a women’s circle for a full moon ceremony and if those are not the perfect conditions to enjoy Kate Bush then I’m not sure what are. I love her voice but this album just didn’t do it for me. There was also some cringe eighties stuff going on.
Snore. I thought this would be a good album. The intro is great but I found it dreary. Her voice was good. He was dull.
I like Radiohead. I didn’t think this was their best album. I generally liked the songs but nothing stood out.
I’d never heard of gene Clark but I really liked this. Probably because I really like Neil Young. Silver Raven and no other were standout to me.
I really like the who but judging this as an album it wasn’t for me. Wayyy too long. Tim said it’s a ‘rock opera’ which I Fournier a bit cringe. I wonder if other ‘musicals’ make the list
I love Steely Dan. We had one tape in the car with Steely Dan (and Deacon Blue) and it’s cemented in my brain. Really love these songs and this album had some absolute hits. I think there are better SD albums but this really is a fun one. I was surprised that this was 72. Sounds later to me.
If you’d asked me ‘what style of music Beck is’ I’d have probably have said Indie. So I was quite surprised to listen to this album. Is it erm rap? I’m not quite sure what it is. I sort of appreciate that it’s quite different and complex. But still it wasn’t for me on the first listen. On the second listen I started to like it more from ‘the new pollution’. There are some definite classics. I started to think he sounded like the bloke from Fontaines DC (though obviously the other way round). And that made me like it a bit more. But yeah probably wouldn’t listen again.
After starting to think Kate Bush was the only woman in music I so so wanted to like this album. The sound of their voices is undeniably beautiful but this type of music just aint for me. I think part of this is that I realise (after reading other reviews) I just don't listen to lyrics at all. So this type of storytelling is really lost on me. However Spotify did guide me to Linda Ronstadt’s other work and that was really great.
One of the reasons for joining this club was to stop me only listening to Fleetwood Mac so it was always going to be five stars from me. I’ve tried really hard to listen with fresh ears and I’m struck by just how incredible they are as musicians. The percussion blends beautifully and there is often a lot technically going on. I do think it should start on the Chain. I’m not a huge fan of ‘don’t stop’ and I cannot get on board with calling your lover ‘daddy’. Gold dust woman and you make lovin are excellent songs.
I was expecting to like this more but it really wasn’t for me. I liked some of the songs in a sort of ‘easy listening’ kind of way. My body had a physical response to ‘chug all night’ which was just bad. I think having just listened to fleetwood, the harmonies in these songs sounded cheesy rather than beautiful/heart wrenching. Black magic woman bumped it to a three.
Ohhh not another man from the seventies. Thankfully this was slightly different to the sounds we have had before. I was pleasantly surprised by the opening track and I liked Duncan. I was only familiar with ‘me and Julio’. Quite a jolly album, makes me regret giving Eagles 3. Not something I’d listen to again but perhaps the occasional song.
I like Elvis Costello and I like his voice and style but it turns out not enough for a whole album. For me it didn’t flow that well. Alison and Watching the Detectives (the hits) stood out.
This was a welcomed relief. I very much liked stomping round the park to this. Perhaps I wouldn’t have voted it so favourably if I hadn’t spent so long in a seventies male desert. This felt like a good antidote. I think they probably highlight what will be a theme of this club ‘genius! Misogynist’
Be careful what you wish for. Am I glad I listened - yes. Am I glad that I listened to the whole first side, decided to give up and then got told that it was just the second side I needed to listen to - no. I so so want. I definitely preferred the second side (the actual album) But yeah I do not have the ear for telling the songs apart so it all sounded samey to me.
I love Nick Cave and his voice. I really enjoyed the album and the gruesome content. Stagger Lee is a standout for me and really great duets.
Always and forever five stars
I’ve never consciously listened to a Radiohead album (before this group). This really is quite a great album. I liked it a lot.
It was either a four or a two. This didn’t feel like a middle of the road album. I liked a lot of the songs way more than I thought I would. But ultimately now I have feelings about albums I just felt it was wayyy too long.
I was surprised to find I didn’t enjoy this. It made me cringe.
I liked it. I’d listen to more. Maybe a bit long.
Perfection. I’ve listened to this album a lot over the weekend. At first I thought it was all about the vocals but the instruments - especially piano- are amazing too. The lyrics are incredible too
What a way to start Monday! I loved this album.
Top marks for any album with a song about Jenny… however… I liked the album and it was fun but I felt like each song was basically exactly the same with different lyrics. Some great well known tracks and definitely fun but not a top scorer.
This album is all about the drums, bass and nostalgia and I was here for it.
I found this album a bit of a mish mash. Superstition is an amazing tune but I found many of the songs a bit slow and cheesy.
I didn't love every song but those that I did were incredible!
'Love shack' is a staple of my karaoke repertoire but I was a little nervous to listen to this album (and it doesn't even include LS). I liked it. I didn't love it, probably wouldn't revisit.
I had high hopes for this but I found it too long with too many filler songs. I absolutely love 'Benny and the Jets' but even that couldn't save this album for me.
I had to interrupt my classic FM Christmas listening for this but I was not disappointed. Nice sounds, lovely jazzy feel.
I'd never heard of them before but I loved it.
Wow this was a surprise. I loved it. I;d never heard of him before. I really enjoyed the dreamlike tunes.
I think I am prejudiced against Ryan Adams based on a guy I use to know who loved him and wanted me to listen to this album. The kind of person that likes a 'manic pixie dreamgirl' kind of person. So I have always associated Ryan Adams with that type of person and resisted listening. Walked into another room when listening, came back and it sounded like exactly the same song was playing.
This very much felt like the same song over and over. I think perhaps the only blues I like are blues christmas songs played over a film scene with drunk santa's hanging out in bars.
I've listened to this album a lot because Tim loves it. I don't think it was great for a Monday morning, more a Sunday evening kind of vibe. I have enjoyed this album in the past but I felt like too many of the songs were similar to eachother. Elliott Smith makes me feel a bit sad. If I want to be listening to a great male song writer and feeling sad I'd go for Nick Drake.
I was pleasantly surprised by this album. Not really my bag but I enjoyed listening to it.
When I was tween I was annoyed because I wish I'd been born growing up in the sixties when there were things to protest about. Be careful what you wish for. I imagine this would have been the soundtrack to my youth had I been born then.
I thought I'd love this album but I thought it was a bit meh. I appreciate that it was probably a pretty revolutionary sound for the period but it was a bit meh for me. I found 'daydreaming' cringe.
I was aware of some of these songs. Loved it.
Van Morrison might be one of the artists where I prefer some of his lesser known tracks (to me) than his big hits. I really liked this album. Tim has played me another album of him that I loved too, 'Common One' google has informed me. Nice sunday vibes.
When I was headbanging in the kitchen to 'ace of spades' I was properly into it and quite happy to give a 4. This is despite Tim pointing out the lyrics. I mean, if a singer shouts about 'jail bate' in the woods and I don't notice does it really happen? But in the cold light of day, I have a bit of a headache and the songs all did sound a bit samey. Still I enjoyed that first banger.
I listen to this album a lot, I just love it.
Perfectly fine
I think I expected to like this more than I did. The stand out songs were the hits I'd heard on the radio before.
I went into this hoping to like it because I figured all the cool kids would. I didn't really like the first track and it felt a bit too 'arty' for me. But by Regiment I got into it lots more and quite enjoyed it by the end.
I like Deep purple and I started liking this, I even like very long instrumentals but really this went onnnnn. The most striking thing to me was how seventies his voice sounded. It was so distinctively, seventies.
On first listen I was hoping for some of the poppy classics and was a little dissapointed but then on listens after I really got to appreciate the beauty of the music. I think he's incredible.
I am a bit prejudice against Bob Dylan for no reason other than it being fun to not like him. I tried to listen to this with an open mind but I honestly found it so dull. His voice is ok but looking at this as an album I felt it was not helped by it's length.
I liked the music and songs, but I didn't really understand it as an album. It felt a bit long and not cohesive.
I;ve never listened to an Elbow album but I have liked all the hits (that I have been exposed to via BBC6 when Guy Garvey is doing his own show). I thought this was beautiful. He has a lovely voice and they are masters of souring vocals and melodies.
I feel cooler for having listened to this
I feel sorry for all the other dad bands that didn't make the list. Sister love? no thanks.
Sorry Miss Jackson was the first song I ever illegally downloaded on Napster. Some nostalgia value. Not a genre I love though. I'm getting tired again of the non stop sausage fest. Two Outkast albums but where's Aaliyah? (She's not on the list). I know the album isn't 'best albums' so would it kill them to include important albums like, for example - Spice Girls?
Not my vibe!
Was relieved when Tim said it was only the ten songs. I liked this and have never heard of them or their songs. I am not confident in my musical knowledge but it sounds a bit velvet underground, beach boys perhaps a bit Ian Dury in the speaky bits. I enjoyed 'I got the hots for you' maybe the lyrics are a bit dated but whatever. Surprised to see that this is 1980, I'd of put it earlier.
This is one of my all time favourite albums that has really stood the test of time for me. I even love the sections between with the school students.
I loved the first track but it didn’t keep my attention throughout
I didn't like this. I wanted it to stop. I know its cool to not like Queen so I was trying hard to like it but I basically just like the hits.
Totally mediocre.
What this list is making me realise is just how much my taste is shaped by exposure/nostalgia etc. I really enjoyed this album, I;d heard of SP of course but hadn't listened to them before. I really enjoyed it but I'm sure if I was more familiar this would be 5* but for now it's a 4.
Definitely too long. I love Mr Blue Sky and I could quite happily listen to this as background music but just too long.
Cheesy glorious saxophone, made me feel like I was in romancing the stone.
I completely loved it, every song, why has it been so long since I have listened to it.
Had heard of them but wouldn't have been able to tell you what type of music they are. I'm not sure I could now, I thought they moved across genres and I quite liked it but it's ultimately not my stuff.
great summer vibes
First time listening to a Smiths album. I like the poppy beat with the melancholy but witty lyrics. Unhappy Birthday was a highlight for me, I'd be interested in what tunes are on other albums.
I wish I knew more about music so that I could write something that articulates what I think is good about this album, but sadly I don't know much about music. So my poor ramblings really won't do it justice. I love this album, I don't think there is a setting that wouldn't be improved by listening to this. It is perfection. I've probably listened 6 times today.
Didn't hate it.
Surprised by how much I didn't particularly like this. I'd heard of the Pixies but if you asked me to sing one of their songs I'd struggle. I don't mind this sort of grungy bangy music but for me this album didn't get anywhere, it was just a lot of the same songs that aren't mixed great (I actually don't know if that's what it is but I have heard people say that and it feels appropriate). So really I was underwhelmed by this.
Finally a woman - ohhh. I just couldn't do it, I got to the third track. Not my vibe babe. Here are some other women who don't make this list: Aaliyah, Alicia Keys, Diana Ross, Dixie chicks, Donna Summers, Kelis, Lady Gaga, Mary J Blige, Regina spektor, No Doubt, Rihanna, Whitney Houston, Robyn,
I liked the social commentary. Felt like lots of the songs were similar.
I quite like his voice, although it sort of feels like a parody. Fun fact, my school Maths teacher (heavy ursualla vibes and known for being a Biatch) knew Elvis Costello and Diana Krall because she ran a jazz club in southend. Makes me think she was cooler than we gave her credit for.
Bad songs good name. Should have been an Indie band.
Good songs but tooooooo lonnnnnng
Am I wrong is there some sort of medieval vibe on the go? I like prog rock but this wasn't for me.
I love Led Zeppelin, So I thought this would be an instant hit. I think the music is incredible, and I know prog rock is criticised for being self-indulgent and you can see why here. This really was just too long for me and took me away from listening because I just couldn't keep my attention.
Oooo his voice gahhh. I didn't hate the music, I actually liked some of it but during 'language problem' I just needed it to stop. I only knew 'another girl, another planet' and I did like that song but a whole album was a bit much. I feel like this list is compiled by people who liked a hit and then felt the need to include a whole album rather than considering including worthwhile and diverse albums.
Loved this too. Maybe not as much as 'kind of blue' but if that's a 7 then this is still a 5 for me.
It's fun, it's got a message 'war = bad', can't complain on a sunny day.
I loved you ever since getting to hear your songs in the 'indie slot' when dancing at Que Pasa in Chelmsford.
For some reason I don't like Paul Simon but I can't beat his catchy tunes.
Some absolute tunes - tooooo long
Woah wasn't expecting this - a woman? Born in the nineties? I don't know her well but I know she's meant to be a good 'un. Nice poppy beats for a sunny day, a bit repetitive.
It's good innit. I have strong memories of the CD cover
Mediocre at best which is disappointing. Clearly Beyonce (and previously Destiny's Child) love an 'intro' (I recommend the Writing's on The wall for a fake Godfather scene headed by Beyonce). I felt like the songs were all first drafts. She obviously has a great voice but I found nothing stood out. The only song I sort of liked was the disco 'blow'.
Maybe if you have heard one Paul Simon album you have heard them all. The only thing that really stood out was the line about finding out about the death of John Lennon - just got me thinking really.
