At the start of the album: I used to love this LP but why ?
At the end of the album: Yes I still love it because it’s honest, not so raw as it is a bit over-produced at some points…but it manages to be moving.
Globalement surfait.
Harvest: good yield
Rust never sleeps: rusty indeed.
I do not quite get the semi live/studio approach. On this rendition, the typical Neil Young's piercing voice is really like tiring for the ears...
It is really a time or sound capsule of 1989...it feels a bit cliche by now.
Could not go through the whole LP.
The Cult: the kind of band that is well known but I did not listen to. First riff: Allright AC/DC rip off, but the sound is clear, fresh punchy....then Wikipedia...produced by Rick Rubin and mixed by Andy Wallace: Okay ! The legends are in command. One critic said that they did one of the worst born to be wild cover : I can only concur with that. The MV is very spinal tap.
In short, it sounds good but it may be these kind of album that came out not at the right time...
The guy is a genius, I love his slide guitar. I liked the single...but too few good moments in the album...repetitive at some points. Worth 2.5 but rated 3
Well, I have completely missed the Strokes in the early 2000s, too soft sounding maybe...Finally I got to listen to the song Reptilia (on the following album) which made me discover this band with a very unique sound and interesting guitar interplay.
Is This It, has 2-3 good songs, no more...
All things must pass, the diarrhea album...in Harrison's own words ! A monument, triple album, super (over) produced with P.Spector, full of hits. It confirms Harrison's introspection: Beware of darkness, isn't a pity...haunting songs...hare krishna....alleluia
Maybe one song sounds ok...otherwise...very flat. Will not listen again, sorry Mrs. Robinson
Bowie goes glam ! Never been into glam rock, except maybe some early T-Rex. Hate the saxophone in these mixes...
Aretha, lady soul...what else? One of the most gifted R&B voices shines through the album...soulful, joyful, it's healing.
The Doors, what a unique band, and what a breakthrough first album !
No one sounds like them. It is the perfect illustration of a band blending strong and very different individuals: Who plays like Manzarek, organ and keyboard bass, jazzy drums like Densmore, finger style overdriven guitar like Krieger ? and Jim Morrisson (Val Kilmer) ?
One of the few 60s bands that still sounds relevant today. They have great songs but not great albums, although this one and LA woman stand out. The B side is a bit weak at the exception of the monumental "The end".
I only knew the album's artwork.
First listen: ah he's British !
That sounds fresh, clear, jangle...there are catchy tunes but a bit repetitive.
I like the sarcasm in the lyrics.
Worth 2.5...but I would go for 3 because it sets me in a good mood.
Hey Teenage Fanclub, what you do to me ? except this nod to the Beatles in the MV...nothing...really nothing inspiring. Supposedly one of the famous 1991 album (what a year for music !)...sorry I am not into the club.
I always hated UB40...not for solid reason, just because of their atrocious cover of Kingston town...Now, this band and their debut album were a political statement (which I was unaware of back then). The album is an enjoyable listen, nice sax (for once), meaningful lyrics, I am signing in.
CCR, straight blues, straight rock.
It's not my preferred album, though a song like Sinister Purpose sounds ahead of its time.
Maybe I am too square, but I could not find any good side in this basket. I was not enlightened by either the music or the peculiar vocals.
A typical 80's production but in a good sense.
Very UK
Worth a deeper listen...
Groundbreaking album from the original wailers. Many songs from this album remained played live as in Babylon by bus: concrete jungle, kinky reggae, stir it up, no more trouble...
Strong work from Tosh as well.
Nothing moving at the exception of the hit Relax.
Coldplay is like comfort food. Solid album.
I have never been excited by progressive rock...that I found sometimes self-indulgent...This record production sounds "modern" for its time (nice bass)...but a bit gimmicky
I was introduced to Rush by a drummer in the early 2000...
That says something. Mike Portnoy from Yellow Matter Custard said: " Tom Sawyer is the greatest air drums song of all time".
Yes Rush music is drums driven and the rest seems negligible. Alex Lifeson can ripp off amazing guitar work, I will still listen to the drums. To Neil Peart, one of the great.
This brings memories back: 8th grade, listening to countess bathory with my buddies...
Well surprisingly, listening nowadays this album is still a good experience...everything is already there in a 1982 album that defines the foundations of all the trash metal US scene.
Another try, another day...maybe ?
Enjoyable listen but I do not get why this album is in this list ans what makes it stand out
The big hits ( shout and EWTRTW ) are iconic 80's pop songs...and rather good ! The rest of the album is weaker. Worth 2.5, going for 3 for the memories and rhe impact on contemporaries.
Never been a huge fan, good but not terrific. Still Noel is a talented songwriter and Liam has stage charisma, but the band lacks something to consider them as top tier act. This album has the song that puts everyone trying to play guitar and Noel's singalong anthem...1,2 and soooo....the rest are just ok songs.
"Immigrant song", and you can see a possessed Jack Black at the wheel of his van...preaching rock to kids ! Hilarious !
Usually my go to Led Zeppelin album is the II. The III is less straightforward and goes into blues and folk: it's great, songs like "friends" or "Since I've been loving you" are gems. A bunch of the songs made the bulk of the mid-90's Page and Plant come back album "No quarter" which is a great listen too !
2nd White Stripes album in this list. This one is more entertaining. I really like some songs that kick the blues into new sound such as "Black math" or "Ball and biscuit"...at first...but then I find it tiring...
Gloomy and disjointed but intriguing
Au secours. Well this UK-US view centered list is getting on my nerves. Where is Axelle Red ?!
I don't believe in Dylan...
Big respect for Dave Grohl...the ultimate rock fan and its best advocate.
This first album is a tour de force, as Grohl played all instruments, finding his own voice and sound. But I just do not really dig it. I prefer the man's work behind the drum kit.
Pivotal album but I prefer Doolittle.
Very (too ?) much avant-garde
Definitely the early 2000 soundtrack.
Early Beatles albums are so fresh !
Unbeatables vocal harmonies, inventive melodies...However, I like this album less than the others: too many ballads, no cover (the Beatles are a great cover band) and especially no Ringo tune !
The album is cool and very diverse but I lost the focus at some point.
Another Beatles pivotal album.
What I like: the lyrics that shifted to more mature topics, the diverse arrangement, Ringo's drumming, John 's vocal delivery...especially on In my life and Nowhere man.
I am not a fan of McCartney grany muzak and the Harrisongs.
Oh oh ! What a blast, this is an unleashed band, full on throttle...it is very exhilarating...
As a teenager, I loved it. Now some songs are a bit pointless. Still child in time, what a song...that breaks the waves...
Really blank and uninspiring
OK that's not bad but not a keeper...
Solid album. 3 pieces bands are always super tight and interesting.
What an excitement ! Michael, yeah....but memories can trick...re-listening to this classic album was a disappointment. Flat songs saved by lush production but with embarrassing videos.
Now I know why I overlooked Oasis in the 90'. This is definitely average.
Okay...I kind of dig the cynical lyrics, but musicaly, it is so so.
I have never understood the hype around Zappa.
Is it prog elevator music ?
It is very well performed a bit bland though.
Nice to see this kind of music in this list.
One of the best debut album. This first line up is the best with the drummer and the brother on rythme guitars. Check-out the rockpalast concert from 79, they are unstoppable
The essence of R&R. The holly trinity with Elvis and Chuck Berry
Fascinating album. You can feel the smoke, the haze with the production. Still relevant to this day.
We're One !
Pivotal album
Sweet spot for Acrobat.
Massive album. I dig the first half but got tired with the very polished production.
A nice DIY vibe. It is pleasant though not groundbreaking. Worth 2.5, put 2 stars
Really good piece of music. It lacks a bit of edge though...
Muse sometimes sounds like Queen under steroids...indulgent at times
I would like to like it but something too polished refrains me to...
What's not to like ?
Actually, I really dig the instrumental intro very much.
Their musical journey spans from gospel to soulful funk: impressive
Nice tunes, instrumentation but I find the vocal rendition blank
The french band Telephone is named after Television. Other than that, I have not enjoyed the listen.
This album was on non-stop air play at the time. And then it seemed it disappeared. It has definitely aged, but it is still an enjoyable listen that brings back memories.
Chrissie Hynde: Cutting through vocals with attitude
The artwork is legendary...the opening track with the synth is legendary...and there is we don't get fooled again...this is their best effort !
Influential record at the time.
I still dig the gigantic guitar sound and the propelling drums, but not the vocals...
Memories: this cassette tape was playing in the car going to the high school checking our grade for the college
I have totally skipped this band, so this is the very first listen: It sounds surprisingly not outdated...It is okay...would I listen to it again, probably not...
Defining album of a defining band !
Nice tunes especially those with piano. Interesting concept to tell a story but it is not poetry...lyrics are sometimes too straightforward.
McCartney once said that the Stones were basically a R&B cover band...a bit mean but on point for this album.
The next efforts will bring more satisfaction...
I love Marc Bolan, I love his revival of RnR and boogie with sparkles and glitter. Lennon said about Bowie and glam that it was Rock n Roll with lipstick. The recipie will not last long but this album is worth it.
It is an immersive journey into the late 60's San Francisco scene...Janis gives it all...for the best. Legendary artwork (Crumb)
Good music. The Byrds have a very distinctive sound with the chimey guitar and ethereal vocal harmonies . The anti-war song "draft morning" is captivating.
New wave is not my thing.
They kind of found an original twist with the percussions...
1982 best British album : without the historical context , it is difficult to comprehend...I can cknowledge the socio-political impact of this genre...but it does not please my ears.
An interesting listen....much more then let's say Oasis !
They have something but their identity is not well defined (compared to...Oasis) as the album is not always consistent.
Oh the banana album, I wanted to be hyped ! In the end, I found it good but not terrific....still some harsh sounds and Lou Reed toxic vocals makes it relevant, even for today.
Marley sell out ! With this album, Marley really steps out from his work with the wailers and morph reggae in a more international digestible music. The songs are strong and the arrangements diverse. I personally prefer the former vibes
Sugar coated Elvis with over the top arrangements (horn section, choir).
I am not a big fan of this period but Elvis still has it !
Saved by the title track...sounds like the soundtrack of a cheesy TV soap from the 70's...this piano, I can't stand it !
Not for me. Cheesy and outdated
Passionate, intimate, exhilarating, meditative...
It was a breakthrough album in many sense, first of all kicking out the hair metal scene and making GnR old fashioned and cliche...
The melodic approach, the quiet/hard moments stolen from the Pixies, the desillusion...and the drums, what a punch !
A milestone in my musical journey
A very good piece of music ! McCartney's music sometimes can be pointless. This album proves his genius....and what a final with nineteen hundred and eighty-five
This album, I can only relate it to fellow reviewer Fredius...
I like the title track a lot. But I can't stand the walk of life.
Ah the tone of Knopfler's les Paul....
1997, Road National 20, direction Orléans. In the radio tape player, OK Computer...playing loud... I got the tape casette recorded from Fredius...
The car is now a spaceship and the journey becomes a meditative experience. This is one of my most vivid musical experience. Each note, each moment in this album is meaningful.
My opinion is biased, because my music journey really started with this band, actually with the made in Japan live album. Machine Head is a very cohesive and consistent album with epic song (highway star), stories (smoke on the water, maybe I'm a leo) and jam (lazy).
Probably my most played cd...
