You can hate the album. It's messy. It's homophobic. But you can't deny that teens everywhere were relieved to find music that spoke to them. It charted after all and won awards. There's very few Korn songs I keep, even in my music playlist Time Capsule, but Freak on a Leash made it (so did Falling Away from Me from Issues)
Definitely a very melancholy album. Not his most popular one, but worth a listen.
Al Green was probably not a great person. He was charged and accused of abuse a lot. This album is soulful. Hes got a calm voice. I added two of his biggest hits, but otherwise the album just played in the background.
This gives me The Beach Boys leave the beach and head to a cult in the woods. It's well done musically, but it doesn't make me want to listen to get it again. It does make me want granola though on a parfait.
Iconic album art. Not an album I'd listen to again though.
I know this album helped generate how hip hop advanced. I respect the artists. However, for me personally, none of the music speaks to me.
We finally hit a more modern album. I appreciate that the novel appreciates that it for being a debut that experiments and was refreshing from nu-soul singers. Do I love it? Not really. Jeez I'm handing out 3 stars like candy.
The album took 3 popular female country icons at the height of their career and harmonized them. It's a good album. It won a Grammy. It went platinum. I don't hate it. Still, country is rarely my thing. So I appreciate it's genius, but I'm not moving any songs to my playlist. I can't give it at a 3 though because I appreciate if I was a country fan, this would be amazing.
I mean, I understand their influence. It just doesnt hit anything for me. Even if I understand it was where they found their sound again and opened up influence for some punk and Aerosmith sounds.
The first song makes it to my playlist. The cover art is great. Even behind blue eyes is iconic. But I would leave the rest behind.
Man. I despise Jack White. I can not with this band.
I would own this album just to hear cry baby and Mercedes Benz on vinyl. Where they belong.
Forgettable. Not amazing. Not terrible. Just there.
I regret this entire 45 minutes.
It's not bad music. We are family and Somebody Loves Me are music good to dance to. Well the whole soundtrack is, but it's disco. That's about the only time you would play it.
The album has upbeat music. Definitely the type you expect to hear in a pub.
The kind of album that deserves vinyl and a cigarette. Maybe some poetry.
Although I didn't hate it, nothing fascinating happened.
He definitely has a voice. I almost gave up on the entire album but a couple songs sort of hit me in the end. Overall not polished. But not all music is supposed to be.
The album is a hell of a story as an overall arc. You need to almost invest in the entire album to follow the journey properly. That arc is genius. Each individual song isn't as stand alone for me.
Bob Dylan is alright. I dont hate him. Hes just not my favorite. Like A Rolling Stone is probably the best song on this album.
Oh Leonard, you sing like you're holding my hand
Its definitely a niche, but i like it. I must have been mood music as I smoked like half a pack of cigarettes through this album. Gross, but it feels it matched the decade.
I did enough megadeth to last a lifetime with an ex who worshiped them. For this im biased.
Music happened. But it didnt need to. Not much special about this.
Love it or hate it, but it keeps that classic sound similar to Radiohead as others have pointed out.
One of the first double LP rock albums. I get he went emotional and a bit more ambigeous with metaphors and poetic lyrics. Still, I'm sorry Bob Dylan, but your flowery albums are safe. And thus, boring as shit.
You either like theatre or you don't. Although there's a lot more theatre I would push to before this Peter Pan influenced album, it's got that show tune quality that theatre kids love.
Afrocentric comes into hip-hop and changes music with positivity, spirituality etc.
I liked "People Everday" but mostly this album just reminded me of a sort of more soulful Beastie Boys.
Not my favorite, but respect their influence.
Sometimes named the best hip-hop album of all time. Do I agree? Not overall, but I don't like one artist for any genre. It's built by so many names.
I notice a lot of the negative reviews for this album are from non hip-hop fans.
Alas, I respect it. They're not one of the artists that made me fall for hip-hop, but you can hear the influence.
Hello, post-punk. Hello further UK musical influence. Especially on the upcoming scene. I like it. I wouldn't buy the album and I'm much more about the artists this kind of stuff influenced than the ones that started it, but it won't live on my vinyl shelf.
The Bee Gees easy listening. Not a terrible album.
As far as Dad Rock, the Eagles take the cake. This album was a lot softer than I expected it to be. It sold 16 million albums so you can't objectively say it's shit. I respect it. I respect how punk wanted to dismantle it. I still probably wouldn't buy the album.
Post-hardcore has never been a genre I connect with much. However, you can't hate on this one. It's good music and reading the reviews made me respect his $5 shows. Alas, I can respect a lot of these albums for their influence and still not run to put them on my shelf.
As far as the genre, it's better than ACDC, Kiss etc. I'm still not buying it though.
It's chaotic. I like it, but it sounds like something that would be more fun as a jam session. In fact, it reminds me of the days my ex had a band in the basement and they would spend hours all just sort of playing and vibing off the other. It's not that they were terrible, it's just that the music is funner for the guy in the studio.
Although, they were actually terrible. So maybe this is it done successfully. Or maybe that's a bad metaphor.
I wanted to dislike this album. Kayne West is a terrible person, but this album is good.
I feel like it should be pouring rain on the blacktop when I listen to this album. Maybe that is why Ireland loved it. Meanwhile, say you have a breakup montage and need to stare at the highway while you drive at night and loud cry to music in the background - you might enjoy this album. It provides melancholy atmosphere well. What it doesn’t do is add that connection that makes you bleed with David Gray.
What? Sorry I fell asleep.
Listen there IS good country. There is good twang. It's just not this.
Whatever shoe gazing is evidently i dont like it.
I said to myself "I'm not going to like this album" and then I didn't mind it. Although for some reason I did feel like I should be staring at an empty apartment before I close the door and fade out to a time in my life. It just has that vibe.
I feel prog rock is a genre that leaves little room for good or bad. Either you output something generic and you get something bland or you output something that sounds good and works. It doesn't really have a "meh" ratio for me. I saw this and figured it would be either dislike or meh, but I liked it. Yes prog rock is pretty polished possibly pretentious, but aren't we all. Just ask half of us to show your album collection.
Or ask me how frustrating I find it critics never add instrumental albums on greatest albums lists. Then I'll sound really pretentious and pissed off.
The man himself is trash. The album itself is well produced. The music itself is metal/rock. I dislike metal. I appreciate the production for it's influence at the time. I dislike the man.
I dislike heavy synth. The album started and I knew it was well loved, but so is ACDC and I've never been a fan. Prince won me over with vibes and voice alone. So fair, take your 4 stars.
I had to seperate McCartney from The Beatles to think objectively here. Most of the album was just dull. Maybe I'm Amazed came on and I thought, "Okay, Paul, showing me I've misjudged you all these years. There's something here." And then he followed it with a song where he pants heavy like a Dad carrying the groceries in.
1 star for having a legacy even though I'm not a fan. 1 star for Maybe I'm Amazed surprising me. No 3 stars for heavy panting soulless music.
Oh Springsteen, you're so loved, but this album was just...okay.
Music happened. I listened
It's never a good sign when I forget the album shortly after listening and have to check Spotify to remember if I listened to it.
Tango is something you have to be in the mood for, but it was fantastic if you are. I can see why this guy is revolutionary.
It's better than their last album, but they're definitely not my favorite 60s album.
After a lot of misses this one entertained me more. I know Costello isn't a favorite of the community, but I reserve my dislike for worse albums.
He is actually a good person. Despite the fact I expected him to be rather stereotype chest thumping American. Lyrically the music is more complex. Good on Springsteen.
I will be seemingly with a smaller majority here and say this is a 3 out of 5 for me. Mostly because I normally don't listen to a lot of punk, but found this more enjoyable. I'm still not sold enough to purchase the album, but I feel like I'd join the unwashed punks and jump around for this.
You know that guy in high-school who was sometimes funny, but more often forced it for attention and just made everyone get more annoyed over time? That's this album. And yes I sat through the 5 minutes of someone saying cream cheese until I wanted to buy this on vinyl just to snap it in half. I might also have a toothache.
Most of the album is just okay. New York I Love You, But You’re Bringing me Down brought this to a 3 star for me. The rest was kinda medicore.
It's the 80s. Everyone's bleak, and probably messed up from their recent road trips through 70s rock and cocaine, and suddenly music goes the way of "we will use synth and existential dread." Thus, Actually. But hey, if you were watching your cash plummet in stock markets and coming off a 10 year cocaine binge, you'd probably feel this album more.
Some other user reviewed a thought that is very much my own. Some of these albums, such as this one, are enjoyable enough while they play, but you have no desire to purchase or remember them afterwards. Thankfully, this list has also led me to some albums I'd buy. So I'll continue despite the fact I think the Rolling Stones 500 greatest albums is a better list.
