4/5
I feel prog rock is a genre that leaves little room for good or bad. Either you output something generic and you get something bland or you output something that sounds good and works. It doesn't really have a "meh" ratio for me. I saw this and figured it would be either dislike or meh, but I liked it. Yes prog rock is pretty polished possibly pretentious, but aren't we all. Just ask half of us to show your album collection.
Or ask me how frustrating I find it critics never add instrumental albums on greatest albums lists. Then I'll sound really pretentious and pissed off.

3/5
Most of the album is just okay. New York I Love You, But You’re Bringing me Down brought this to a 3 star for me. The rest was kinda medicore.
Aretha Franklin · 1 likes
4/5
There's weaknesses in this, sure. Mainly the production and her backup singers, but Aretha Franklin's voice was and will always be a powerhouse. It's worth having in your collection for those nights when it's pouring rain and your drinking wine and contemplating a previous lover.

Korn
3/5
You can hate the album. It's messy. It's homophobic. But you can't deny that teens everywhere were relieved to find music that spoke to them. It charted after all and won awards. There's very few Korn songs I keep, even in my music playlist Time Capsule, but Freak on a Leash made it (so did Falling Away from Me from Issues)
The Cure
3/5
Definitely a very melancholy album. Not his most popular one, but worth a listen.
Al Green
3/5
Al Green was probably not a great person. He was charged and accused of abuse a lot. This album is soulful. Hes got a calm voice. I added two of his biggest hits, but otherwise the album just played in the background.
Queen
4/5
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
This gives me The Beach Boys leave the beach and head to a cult in the woods. It's well done musically, but it doesn't make me want to listen to get it again. It does make me want granola though on a parfait.
David Bowie
2/5
Iconic album art. Not an album I'd listen to again though.
Beastie Boys
3/5
I know this album helped generate how hip hop advanced. I respect the artists. However, for me personally, none of the music speaks to me.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Sing to my soul Marley.
The Zutons
3/5
We finally hit a more modern album. I appreciate that the novel appreciates that it for being a debut that experiments and was refreshing from nu-soul singers. Do I love it? Not really. Jeez I'm handing out 3 stars like candy.
Dolly Parton
4/5
The album took 3 popular female country icons at the height of their career and harmonized them. It's a good album. It won a Grammy. It went platinum. I don't hate it. Still, country is rarely my thing. So I appreciate it's genius, but I'm not moving any songs to my playlist. I can't give it at a 3 though because I appreciate if I was a country fan, this would be amazing.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
I mean, I understand their influence. It just doesnt hit anything for me. Even if I understand it was where they found their sound again and opened up influence for some punk and Aerosmith sounds.
The Who
3/5
The first song makes it to my playlist. The cover art is great. Even behind blue eyes is iconic. But I would leave the rest behind.
The White Stripes
1/5
Man. I despise Jack White. I can not with this band.
Janis Joplin
4/5
I would own this album just to hear cry baby and Mercedes Benz on vinyl. Where they belong.
Steely Dan
2/5
Forgettable. Not amazing. Not terrible. Just there.
The Fall
1/5
I regret this entire 45 minutes.
Sister Sledge
2/5
It's not bad music. We are family and Somebody Loves Me are music good to dance to. Well the whole soundtrack is, but it's disco. That's about the only time you would play it.
The Pogues
3/5
The album has upbeat music. Definitely the type you expect to hear in a pub.
Suede
4/5
The kind of album that deserves vinyl and a cigarette. Maybe some poetry.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
2/5
Although I didn't hate it, nothing fascinating happened.
The Only Ones
3/5
He definitely has a voice. I almost gave up on the entire album but a couple songs sort of hit me in the end. Overall not polished. But not all music is supposed to be.
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
The album is a hell of a story as an overall arc. You need to almost invest in the entire album to follow the journey properly. That arc is genius. Each individual song isn't as stand alone for me.
Bob Dylan
2/5
Bob Dylan is alright. I dont hate him. Hes just not my favorite. Like A Rolling Stone is probably the best song on this album.
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Oh Leonard, you sing like you're holding my hand
Paul Simon
3/5
Its definitely a niche, but i like it. I must have been mood music as I smoked like half a pack of cigarettes through this album. Gross, but it feels it matched the decade.
Megadeth
1/5
I did enough megadeth to last a lifetime with an ex who worshiped them. For this im biased.
The Specials
2/5
Music happened. But it didnt need to. Not much special about this.
3/5
Love it or hate it, but it keeps that classic sound similar to Radiohead as others have pointed out.
Goldfrapp
3/5
Deee-Lite
2/5
Bob Dylan
2/5
One of the first double LP rock albums. I get he went emotional and a bit more ambigeous with metaphors and poetic lyrics. Still, I'm sorry Bob Dylan, but your flowery albums are safe. And thus, boring as shit.
Meat Loaf
3/5
You either like theatre or you don't. Although there's a lot more theatre I would push to before this Peter Pan influenced album, it's got that show tune quality that theatre kids love.
Arrested Development
2/5
Afrocentric comes into hip-hop and changes music with positivity, spirituality etc.
I liked "People Everday" but mostly this album just reminded me of a sort of more soulful Beastie Boys.
Not my favorite, but respect their influence.
Gang Starr
3/5
Sometimes named the best hip-hop album of all time. Do I agree? Not overall, but I don't like one artist for any genre. It's built by so many names.
I notice a lot of the negative reviews for this album are from non hip-hop fans.
Alas, I respect it. They're not one of the artists that made me fall for hip-hop, but you can hear the influence.
Julian Cope
3/5
Hello, post-punk. Hello further UK musical influence. Especially on the upcoming scene. I like it. I wouldn't buy the album and I'm much more about the artists this kind of stuff influenced than the ones that started it, but it won't live on my vinyl shelf.
Bee Gees
3/5
The Bee Gees easy listening. Not a terrible album.
Eagles
3/5
As far as Dad Rock, the Eagles take the cake. This album was a lot softer than I expected it to be. It sold 16 million albums so you can't objectively say it's shit. I respect it. I respect how punk wanted to dismantle it. I still probably wouldn't buy the album.
Fugazi
3/5
Post-hardcore has never been a genre I connect with much. However, you can't hate on this one. It's good music and reading the reviews made me respect his $5 shows. Alas, I can respect a lot of these albums for their influence and still not run to put them on my shelf.
Thin Lizzy
3/5
As far as the genre, it's better than ACDC, Kiss etc. I'm still not buying it though.
King Crimson
3/5
It's chaotic. I like it, but it sounds like something that would be more fun as a jam session. In fact, it reminds me of the days my ex had a band in the basement and they would spend hours all just sort of playing and vibing off the other. It's not that they were terrible, it's just that the music is funner for the guy in the studio.
Although, they were actually terrible. So maybe this is it done successfully. Or maybe that's a bad metaphor.
Kanye West
4/5
I wanted to dislike this album. Kayne West is a terrible person, but this album is good.
David Gray
3/5
I feel like it should be pouring rain on the blacktop when I listen to this album. Maybe that is why Ireland loved it. Meanwhile, say you have a breakup montage and need to stare at the highway while you drive at night and loud cry to music in the background - you might enjoy this album. It provides melancholy atmosphere well. What it doesn’t do is add that connection that makes you bleed with David Gray.
The Byrds
2/5
What? Sorry I fell asleep.
Listen there IS good country. There is good twang. It's just not this.
My Bloody Valentine
2/5
Whatever shoe gazing is evidently i dont like it.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
3/5
I said to myself "I'm not going to like this album" and then I didn't mind it. Although for some reason I did feel like I should be staring at an empty apartment before I close the door and fade out to a time in my life. It just has that vibe.
The Mars Volta
Marilyn Manson
2/5
The man himself is trash. The album itself is well produced. The music itself is metal/rock. I dislike metal. I appreciate the production for it's influence at the time. I dislike the man.
Prince
4/5
I dislike heavy synth. The album started and I knew it was well loved, but so is ACDC and I've never been a fan. Prince won me over with vibes and voice alone. So fair, take your 4 stars.
Paul McCartney
2/5
I had to seperate McCartney from The Beatles to think objectively here. Most of the album was just dull. Maybe I'm Amazed came on and I thought, "Okay, Paul, showing me I've misjudged you all these years. There's something here." And then he followed it with a song where he pants heavy like a Dad carrying the groceries in.
1 star for having a legacy even though I'm not a fan. 1 star for Maybe I'm Amazed surprising me. No 3 stars for heavy panting soulless music.
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
Oh Springsteen, you're so loved, but this album was just...okay.
Can
3/5
Music happened. I listened
Neil Young
3/5
It's never a good sign when I forget the album shortly after listening and have to check Spotify to remember if I listened to it.
Astor Piazzolla
4/5
Tango is something you have to be in the mood for, but it was fantastic if you are. I can see why this guy is revolutionary.
The Byrds
3/5
It's better than their last album, but they're definitely not my favorite 60s album.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
3/5
After a lot of misses this one entertained me more. I know Costello isn't a favorite of the community, but I reserve my dislike for worse albums.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
He is actually a good person. Despite the fact I expected him to be rather stereotype chest thumping American. Lyrically the music is more complex. Good on Springsteen.
The Adverts
3/5
I will be seemingly with a smaller majority here and say this is a 3 out of 5 for me. Mostly because I normally don't listen to a lot of punk, but found this more enjoyable. I'm still not sold enough to purchase the album, but I feel like I'd join the unwashed punks and jump around for this.
The Mothers Of Invention
1/5
You know that guy in high-school who was sometimes funny, but more often forced it for attention and just made everyone get more annoyed over time? That's this album. And yes I sat through the 5 minutes of someone saying cream cheese until I wanted to buy this on vinyl just to snap it in half. I might also have a toothache.
LCD Soundsystem
3/5
Most of the album is just okay. New York I Love You, But You’re Bringing me Down brought this to a 3 star for me. The rest was kinda medicore.
Pet Shop Boys
3/5
It's the 80s. Everyone's bleak, and probably messed up from their recent road trips through 70s rock and cocaine, and suddenly music goes the way of "we will use synth and existential dread." Thus, Actually. But hey, if you were watching your cash plummet in stock markets and coming off a 10 year cocaine binge, you'd probably feel this album more.
The Undertones
3/5
Some other user reviewed a thought that is very much my own. Some of these albums, such as this one, are enjoyable enough while they play, but you have no desire to purchase or remember them afterwards. Thankfully, this list has also led me to some albums I'd buy. So I'll continue despite the fact I think the Rolling Stones 500 greatest albums is a better list.
Beck
4/5
Imagine you're overwhelmed and need to cry. Imagine you're driving down the highway in a movie montage and crying while the rain peels down. Imagine you're driving away from something and not mad about it. Beck is the bittersweet soundtrack to crying in the rain while driving. If that's a mood for you, you'll probably enjoy this. If you don't enjoy that kind of sound ever this will probably sound dull.
The Cardigans
2/5
It's got a very 90s sound. Less grunge more female constrained noise. Unlike the Alanis Morissette or Jewel purpose which was more feminist power this is more soft touch female. Which, fair, but if we're doing soft touch female voice, give me the spark that other artists brought forward over demure female.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
3/5
Gorillaz
3/5
Evidently I only ever heard Clint Eastwood. It wasn’t what I expected from this album, but fair enough.
Sigur Rós
3/5
Overall I liked this album, but every once in a while they would add the strangest choice in sound. And I'd go from following the music with them to wanting to throw things at my speakers. Pour quotes?!
Pulp
3/5
I was suprised to hear this album. I didnt dislike it actually. Anything from this genre is always kind of hard to life out, but this one seemed to grow on me the further down the album I got.
George Harrison
2/5
Sometimes I think my view on George Harrison and the Beatles is too harsh. To assign the band the idea that they're grandiose might be a bit much. Then Harrison makes a 2 hour album and I don't feel guilty anymore.
Ray Charles
4/5
How to make a masterpiece in 34 minutes. Good on you, Charles.
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
Part of the hip hop revolution. It will sound outdated now maybe, but it maintains it's importance
The Stooges
4/5
This is one of those albums I ended up liking because of this list. Solid 4 stars.
Pink Floyd
5/5
Fantastic album. Maintains its fantastic sound decade after decade.
The Who
3/5
I mean, even the band said it was rushed. This is an example of critics retroactively assigning meaning. Greatest my ass.
Beastie Boys
4/5
Alright Beastie Boys, coming back from Paul's Botique with an album I actually like more. Fair. You've earned your 4.
Lauryn Hill
4/5
There's older hip hop that doesn't really maintain over the decades. This does. I'm on board.
Nas
4/5
You can always tell when you hit a good hip hop album because it somehow doesn't date itself. A lot of earlier albums you can hear the decades sound, but albums like this seamlessly blend in.
Gotan Project
3/5
Aw shit. I have been fighting this whole list that instrumental albums are highly powerful and its infuriating they're rarely.include one. And then they drop this "okay but not memorable" album as my first instrumental. Damn it.
The Clash
3/5
It's 1979. The world feels bleek. War is still humming the after effects, there's no jobs, garbage in the streets, and the paint is peeling on my flat. Do I know? Absolutely not I wasn't born yet, but I can feel it in the lyrics and the music of punk. So I took 3 entire days trying to love this album, but sitting in 2026 where my kids friends are all shouting K Pop lyrics and I'm reminiscing on bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppin and, more modern lyrics, Bright Eyes, Amigo the Devil or Benjamin Tod, I am not screaming with the Clash for social change. I'm more avoiding the astounding amount of over exposure to world news issues and drinking my mediocre pod coffee while debating when my washer will be fixed. Ah 1979, you could have been so...
Donald Fagen
2/5
Back in 1915, Malevich painted something called Black Square. Which is a highly respected piece of art that had deep meaning, but visually was literally just a black square. This is so polished and intending to have meaning, but it is as musically interesting to look at as Black Square. Which I suppose is high cultural praise, but still is bland to observe.
Ice Cube
3/5
Ice Cube had something to say and the message carries to current time. He doesnt outdate himself like some rappers.
Common
2/5
There's a lot of problematic framing in these lyrics. I like the flow, but it outdated itself fast.
Beatles
1/5
I made it! Through the entire White Album which everyone claims is so ridiculously fantastic. I know you're mad I don't want to listen. Your mad I think they're over hyped garbage, but they are. I maintain my point.
Morrissey
3/5
People hate him, but I didn't hate this album. Ah well.
The Band
3/5
The music is just... safe. The sound isn't bad it's just dull.
Miles Davis
3/5
Miles Davis has a smooth sound. I enjoy it. It doesn't light me up enough to buy the album, but its smooth.
The B-52's
4/5
This is really a well done album. I don't have anything else clever to say because I have a migraine from hell.
Beck
3/5
Beck has a mix of sounds here. He tends to swing between college party sound and more introspective. There's a few good vibes, but overall I think he has a stronger album.
Van Halen
3/5
Its very of the time. Which means I'm not annoyed by it but I'm definitely not buying the album.
Air
4/5
They come in with their French tones and make a fairly descent album.
Stephen Stills
3/5
The album starts boring. It almost hits 2 stars for me. Then Black Queen and We are not Helpless shows me I don't hate everything this man produces. So okay, three stars Stills, but get your head in the game!
Portishead
4/5
This won't be everyone's thing. They basically said fuck our old sound and fuck modern equipment. Which fair.
Radiohead
4/5
The thing with these albums is sometimes there's backstory that makes the album listen better in context. Outside of that context, this is maybe a 3 for me. I like this album enough, but it's not as powerful as In Rainbows or OK Computer. Now here's some context: this grunge band had just released the song Creep a few years before in the early 90s. And if you comparatively listen to that to the Fade Out song at this album, their sound went from one hit wonder grunge band to... some entire other evolution. Radiohead started pushing introspection. Soft. Melancholy. Less raw. Now this wasn't THE album that revolutionized the grunge movement, but it had influenced it. But mostly, anyone who goes from the fairly basic sound of Creep to this album? Deserves an extra star.
The Byrds
2/5
Man how many bird albums can we do. They're not good.
Snoop Dogg
3/5
Ah the rap of misogyny. It's not that I don't like this It's that he's not a technical rapper. His lyrics aren't powerful, they're simplistic over amazing beats. Which is probably what he's aiming for, but without the Dre production quality this would just be 2 stars for me despite the icon he is.
Lupe Fiasco
4/5
I guess I shouldn't have been suprised i liked this one. It won multiple awards. But I was. I had vaguely heard of him, but not this album. This is clean though.
Steely Dan
2/5
Sorry... fell asleep. What happened?
2/5
This wasn't as terrible as I expected and I like the concept, but it would probably do better with a live theatrical performance.
The Who
2/5
The problem with including several albums from the same band is that eventually I just feel like they are hyping the band not the album.
Wu-Tang Clan
4/5
Its a classic for a reason.
OutKast
4/5
I never disliked Outkast, but I didnt expect to actually really like this album. Sold. Please enter my collection.
The Replacements
4/5
I liked it more than I thought i would but didnt love it as much as one would hope.
4/5
I had began believing i wasnt a Bowie fan. So there I was with coffee expecting a while till I found a good album and Bowie slapped me and said, you like this.
Fugees
5/5
Fantastic. Simply fantastic.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
Not a bad album. Nothing inherently special but a good listen.
The White Stripes
2/5
Jack White you gained 1 star compared to your last album. I know you're seen as iconic, but man am I not your fan.
Aretha Franklin
4/5
There's weaknesses in this, sure. Mainly the production and her backup singers, but Aretha Franklin's voice was and will always be a powerhouse. It's worth having in your collection for those nights when it's pouring rain and your drinking wine and contemplating a previous lover.
Television
3/5
The guitar work is beautiful. I get the influential move this album had on a lot of rock bands even if it's sales stayed in Britan. I can't side with anyone who says it's a bad album, but I can tell you I respect it for it's craft, but I'm not enthralled in it as a stand alone album.
The Smiths
2/5
I don't know why the list feels that because an artist was influential we need multiple albums of the same artist. Especially when this wasn't even their hardest impact album.
Adam & The Ants
3/5
Well it got me through putting away my laundry, putting in a new wash, making my bed and doing my dishes (I swear my next place is not happening unless it has a dishwasher). But it wouldn't be what i would have chosen normally. The first half is stronger.
Supertramp
2/5
Music may have happened, but not engaging music that I was bothered absorbing.
Frank Zappa
3/5
Zappa is a hell of a guitarist. I bet seeing him live in 69 was something else. I feel like this is best seen alive as opposed to spun in your living room via album 55 years later. It would be a 5 star if I was in concert I bet.
Björk
4/5
Bjork is such a beautiful artist. She combines jazz with a unique sound that... well, isn't jazz. And that fits over it with a soft feminine voice. What's the opposite of her voice? Maybe like deep and gravely? Anyway, stellar artist.
Common
3/5
He's a good lyricist and, probably, because of the soul sound, it hasnt aged itself out. I assume what is missing for me is that emotional feeling in his work.
David Bowie
3/5
This was alright. I liked the instrumental pause of Moss Garden the best probably. I'll never be an avid Bowie fan, but this was tolerable at least.
David Bowie
3/5
There's 9 Bowie albums on this list. But why? There's no argument the guy made himself legendary, but his entire discography isn't really required for that understanding. And this one easily could have been dropped.
Dolly Parton
3/5
Dolly Parton has that iconic twang. She sings meaning to her songs, but for whatever reason she doesn't land with me.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
I mean it's Stevie Wonder. He plays. I get stressed from life. He tries to calm me with his serenading clips.
Soundgarden
3/5
Nah. This ain't it.
Grateful Dead
2/5
Its been a while since I got a good album. Im getting sour.
Muddy Waters
4/5
You have to like blues, but I do. It's got such a gorgeous sound. It may not be the type of person to want a Blues collection, but I am the type that appreciates it in an authentic way. It makes me want to do hard labor and drink whiskey though.
Fela Kuti
4/5
This guy's backstory is absolutely outrageous. So listen I like music about dancing in the club as much as the next person, but this is art that says something.
Laibach
3/5
I don't dislike this as much as the general users evidently. I don't think it's brilliant, but it's clever. And I usually hate anything in the metal territory.
The Zombies
3/5
The backstory shared by the top commenter is unhinged. Meanwhile, this is alright.
Wilco
2/5
An album to fall asleep too.
Bob Dylan
2/5
Oh Bob Dylan, we have four more albums to go.
De La Soul
2/5
Like others who reviewed this, its a fun album. However, with how high it's rated I thought it would hit harder. It's more like a fun concert you'd go to once.
Turbonegro
2/5
An inserting album. But its not selling me on owning it. Which is, after all, my entire test.
10cc
2/5
I am not sure what happened here but it wasnt the music that made me understand why it was on this list. I can understand choices I don't like but I know how they changed music, but what is this?
AC/DC
3/5
Ive never been a huge AC/DC fan. I respect their legacy, but I'd never sink into their music.
