Some killer tracks, a lot of filler. It starts incredibly strongly but is dragged down with the folly elements and feels a mess. The second half for the album is weak, in my opinion, songs 5, 6, and 7 just dull.
It's not got anything that really catches and holds my attention. I can hear the influence it's had on popular English music, but that alone doesn't interest me.
Good eclectic mix of samples, lots of shouting vocals and funky riffs. Some good humour, this was a lot more enjoyable than expected. I'd never heard this stuff at all, and will be listening again and possibly deep diving into more of their material properly
Loads of relaxing, slow paced tunes. So much room in the mix for things to breath it's beautiful.
It always feels weird listening to music like this without vocals, it's more background music or a soundtrack to life rather than something I can see me cranking on the good stereo for a focussed listen
Like a poor man's Johnny Cash.
Very poorly mixed, some odd stuff going on that isn't really working for me. Vocals strained. Instruments are really lacking in power and it never really gets going.
It's funky, sure, but has it aged well - no. It doesn't have as many hooks as some other music of this genre for me to get my toe tapping. Middle of the road.
Sprightly, shame the cussing is bleeped as I feel it will be more authentic.
The man had some attitude and front on him, fun to hear.
So good, this is really enjoyable stuff. After Johnny Cash, this is right up there but higher standard of music underpinning the lyrics. Even better singing than Cash.
It was alright, I prefer Sublime if I'm going to listen to this type of music
Sweeping vocals, punchy and fun. They don't make them like this anymore
Very wishy washy. It had no bite, lacked fun too.
Very bright pitched album, I can hear queen influences. I don't like the singing but some of the guitar is ace.
Really odd voice, low in the mix and lacking in substance. Some good technical playing, but not really for me.
Some good tunes, let down by poor singing and over indulgence in the last few songs.
Rock solid Christmas album. Seasonal and fun.
Great powerful production given the era.
Top album, fake plastic trees and street spirit are absolutely brilliant.
Some class tunes that pointed to a more experimental future for the band
Very tinny, awkward sounding album. Similar sounding songs played over multiple times, avoid.
Three songs was too much, travesty on the ears.
Punchy recording, detailed mix with some brilliant highest and lows. Strong singing, fun rapping and simple song structures mean these are ear worms. Metal for idiots
Child in time is amazing.
Speed king is an awesome start to the album.
Some indulgence in the keyboard and vocals, but with the skill to back it up.
Not as many iconic tracks as I would have expected, but it's a solid rock album
Some nice beats, this hasn't aged anywhere near as bad as similar albums
Very slow and ponderous. With enough drugs and time, I imagine it would be great to indulge in.
Why use jizz figurines as your art work, stick people have been around for years?
Not for me, 90's rap and hip hop is just drab to listen to in my opinion.
Missing vocals to get the hooks into me for the first song. I feel like that song was an ill recorded Beatles B side without lyrics.
Second song, minorly depressing without any real hook.
Gave up when I got through songs 3, 4 and 5 without wanting to cut off my ears.
Some strong lyrics, funky beats and real attitude. Surprisingly, I quite enjoyed this.
Pleasant, soulful and punchy. Really good stuff, much better than the modern dross in the R&B category.
Too much jazz noodling for me.
A lot to unpack in a single evening of listening. Loads of ideas and noise, arty, cinema style, picture painting, but not particularly enjoyable at first listen.
I imagine this will need multiple goes to get into.
Sounds just like any random pub band in the 80's to me. Shite.
Amazing album. Stuffed full of old school misogyny and riffs galore that's laced with old school humour. Love it, but know that it would never get recorded in this day and age.
Not quite punchy or fun enough to catch my ear. I grew bored after 6 songs. It never really got going, whilst the first song was catchy it didn't sustain my interest at all.
Feels like a drop off in quality after listening to Deep Purple recently. Some crunchy riffs, flashy solos, but it's just so commercial feeling. I feel like I need to clean myself after listening to this.
Better than expected, second Smith's album I've done. You can here the guitar references in modern UK indie, the lyrics are good and some of the songs are deeper and more challenging than on the previous album I heard.
Amazing, it took me years to get into. So many songs that are a great listen.
Background music at best.
Starts strong, trails off rapidly.
Punchy tunes, aggressive fancy music, not music for your nan to listen to.
Favourite album of my youth.
Hit after hit, grimy, unclean lyrics mixed with some of best rock guitar I've heard that somehow is radio friendly and not suitable for minors.
So many absolute bangers, some filthy lyrics and powerful vocals (albeit in a nasally range).
Very glam, but not quite solid enough to hold my attention. Radio friendly, not much dynamism shown from anyone to bring this into 1001 album territory.
Lame, not for me at all I'm afraid. Everyone must have heard the first track, well it all goes downhill after
It sounds funky but dated heavily. Aggressive lyrics, I like some of their word play and directness.
Dancy, but not as great as Paul's boutique for samples.
Wank music, not the sort you tug to, just wank content that's dates badly I'm afraid.
Very challenging to enjoy, elements of fun, but swamped by odd choices that make this a non-essential listen. Kuntz particularly was just unnecessary, coming from a man that has a vulgar tongue, this was just not needed.
Nope.
Radio friendly bull shit.
Hot for teacher, great drum and guitar but the drums sound like card board boxes.
House of pain has some class riffage.
Hints of Led Zeppelin at points, great guitar and some unnecessary complex drum parts. But otherwise I'd question why this is in a list of 1001 albums of notoriety.
Really beautiful. Slow, passionate, and intricately recorded. I will absolutely listen to this again and again, a top find.
So dated, it's far to awkward to listen to and take seriously.
Some how smoother and more aggressive than the Beastie Boys at the same time. The man drops lots of cleverly rhymes words in a brilliant way that people find appealing, there are stories and layers to some of these songs that are well grooved paths.
Really smooth hip-hop, not as commercial as M&M, but far tighter production values. I really enjoy the mix of the album.
Absolute blast from the past. Fun, rock and pop vibes, much better than more recent Foo Fighter albums in my opinion. However, is it top a 1001 album, nope. It's not pushing the boundaries, nor is it leaving a legacy that stands the rest of time.
At best, it's more fun than Nirvana, but the Foo's evolved from here with Colour and the Shape, as well as Nothing left to lose. I enjoy the album, but it's not worthy of this list.
Middle of the road softness for the elderly
Chocka block full of Metallica style riffs. Lacking poise in the song writing side of things. Vocals sound warped, odd mix.
No doubt they can play fast guitar though, heavy as a counter hammer to Fleet Foxes softness.
This has got it's own feel to it, slightly grimy. It never really expands on the sound and stays in the same grove for pretty much every track, going from slightly dangerous sounding to safe and comfortable due to the lack of gear change.
Nicely recorded, in a similar area to Johnny Cash for me. It sounds like a combo of blues, folk and country in parts, not my sort of thing but I can see the appeal.
