ground zero record for me in retrospect -- and i remember i wasn't allowed to have it in the house so was limited to MTV and radio play. As an adult now getting into vinyl the clear demarkation between A and B side songs was eye opening... although I probably should have understood that at the time.
I feel like I should be traveling through the woods in Game of Thrones while on mushrooms when listening to this.
Probably need a dedicated time to listen to straight through. Can see the appeal.
Solid throughout. But again, it is Neil Young afterall.
Acid house not my jam so ill leave it to the crowds to opine.
I had no idea they were from Sweden, which sent me down a linguistics rabbit hole about why garage rock doesn’t really function in Swedish.
A quintessential Christmas album. Stoke the wood stove, drop the needle, and have you kids rip open presents like its 1985. Spike the eggnog with a shot of your choice at the turn and slip back into when Christmas still mattered.
Confused
Clearly talented. Raw and unrelenting. A bit too raw for me but I see it.
Simply a classic
I listened patiently waiting for the moment to come where my mind opened to this one. It did not arrive.
Now i undersrand those SNL skits as a child.
Wish they had 1/2 star options as this would be 3 1/2. I am generally a fan of his work, but this one did not hit me like the others.
Indeed a special album. My higher rating than this crowd may be because The Specials are a bit new to me.. and new music generally is more intresting.
This album is very familiar to me. This may get better with age for me?
Beastie boy vibes
Loud and chaotic with some mixin’s of delight. Shut the door I did like.
Chefs kiss. I could listen to this all day long.
Low key and mellow throughout. Nothing absolutely brilliant, nothing bad either.
Still fantastic
I probably need to listen to this another time through
I am only 20 deep on this journey, and in certain instances I have had moments of - holy crap, how have I never heard this song before. This happened multiple times here. Legit.
Reminds me of sitting through a av exhibit at a modern art museum.
pretty good but a bit repetitive
Not my type of jam
Earthy and hypnotic
some of the tracks are too harsh for my taste -- but the ones that slap.. slap. Castles Made of Sand of the deluxe edition pushed this up a bit for me, but is it an official track?
great messages - but the music itself a bit harsh for me.
And to think all these years they were just a 1 hit wonder.
i struggle with some of the tracks - enjoy some of the others. another cover art jem of course.
at first, was alarmed at the number of tracks... but give a run through and it has some ephemeral magic to it. a musicians album.
Great guitar play and perfect amount of edge for my taste.
pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of this album. def low key listening but still delightful.
great cover art. too raw for my taste
classic then -- classic now.
Jamming
super interesting project -- but what else would you expect with Björk. Rounding up this one for its uniqueness.
Dense but great. A classic illustration of how marketing drove sales back in the day. An album that would be impossible to make today.
Big, dark, and moody like you would expect. Def in my rotation, but wasn't ground-breaking.. but maybe i've listened to it too much historically.
great voice... boring album
feels like I'm flying in a spaceship. decent album.. and I get the transition, but not something I would throw on anytime
Previously just liked a couple of the radio hits of his... this album opened my eyes and emotions to his talent and soul.
decent big band record. not my type of music, but appreciated the album.
classic rock - but nothing too eye opening
pretty amazing. Period of time in my life where I stopped exploring music so i did not know. Now I do.
A masterpiece that floored me the first time I heard it many years ago.. and still. A talent that was taken away from our earth way to early.
I get it as needing to be on the list, but way to repetitive.
Hard to ignore Velvet Underground influence and despite its importance to the '70s NY scene, was a good 1 time listen to appreciate music history, but too much of the same.
A must-listen. Throw this on during a country drive and let the album wash over you and re-live your memories. Perfect soundtrack for finding a little peace on the road.
Had no clue she was from England all these years. I guess Adele and Amy Winehouse weren't as much the trailblazers that I thought.
I remember Rooster from back in the day... given that this is not my typical type of music -- still a few tracks I enjoyed.
This was one of the few CDs I owned as a kid, and I really have I had it other than it was recommended by Tower Records. Even on my cheap CD player it was more than an experience -- it was the soundtrack to playing Sega Genesis in my stingy basement.
Dear God is a banger... rest is nothing special to me.
another genre that's not my style... thanks for serving it up though.
Ultimately feels like something I have heard before.... many times before... and the songs all sound the same. Opener is OK.
friday night lights as an album -- its enjoyable, but not unique enough to get top billing
some of his lyrics are a bit edgy for me -- but you have to appreciate the talent.
this album blew my mind. each track is an adventure, and anyone who is into music theory should drop everything and listen to this now. be patient though -- these aren't your usual tracks.
chaotic... not my thing. couldn't appreciate it.
simply amazing from top to bottom
love this album -- fun fact -> James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt did some of the backing vocals
I gravitate toward their later stuff, but as an album its good throughout.
unexpected... and masterful. Hard not to enjoy all the tracks
highly suggest listening this with high quality headphones or sound system, otherwise you'll miss out on the textures and beats...
i get some of the feedback of the varied styles on this album -- and the length. however, after listening to it a few runs through there were a number of songs that resonated with me... but as a % of the total album its lower, otherwise this would get a 4
2nd Arcade Fire album to come up through this journey already... they are talented
I guess there are more bots here than i thought
possibly a function of this being too "oldsey" for my ears. a ton of classics for sure though.
never understood Megadeth
Smart and precise and actually goes somewhere.. I guess I don't like jazz that much.
Def opened up my mind. There is genius here bit some of the tracks are just jams with no point -- others are keepers.
90s head who values a more groove, so Dizzee’s aesthetic made me a bit dizzy -- and it just droned on. hard for me to get through.
more than just Sweet Dreams... takes you back to the 80s with some deeper cuts that emote.
pretty repetitive. listen to Anarchy in the UK and God Save the Queen and move on..
some good... some not so good. RIP.
i've heard the hits... but straight through is a hoot as well. listen to the background composition and realize how ahead of its time it was.
the collection of songs all work together well, but there are a number of filler pieces that are just that... which is ok, but just a warning to the listener.
Aimee Mann doing Aimee Mann things. Not her best work, but deserving I think to be on this list. I read through a bit of the reviews and I'm beginning to think that some people are not understanding the exercise of this journey. My view is to rate the album relative to this group of 1001+ albums... not relative to music of all time. If that was the case, this would get a 4... but my rating here is a 3, which to mean its an enjoyable listening experience, but doesn't open my brain that much.
Gotta love the classic Doc's shes wearing on the cover too...
is it even a discussion?
painful
The video for The Rain will be forever engrained in my memory... and while I thought it was OK at the time, what I didn't realize is that this album had other tracks that I thought were better, but didn't have the radio rotation play.
70s soul foundation that builds a soundstage effortlessly (for the most part.. the skits are somewhat distracting). Just play these --> 3 Is, Mars, Eye, Soap, Say No, Buddy, Me Myself and I.. that is the pure rotation buddy. Word.
Has punk charm, but sounds more like a garage band rehearsal session.
I've head all these songs before... but wasn't an active listener of Black Sabbath to realize they are from the same album. Not my usual jam, but this one rocks!
i had a friend in college named Bob. Bob was smart. Bob wrestled. Bob was from western maryland. Bob played he guitar in our house all the time singing about refrigerators. Steve Earle reminds me of Bob.
Frenetic collage of music. Some if it hits too hard for me, but Mango Pickle, The Turn, XR2, Come Around.. and of course Paper Planes are enough to push to 4
this one was unexpected -- great listen for those who know
I generally can't get enough of the Smiths, it continues with this one. Some may find it much of the same, but hey... its still great.
prince is talented. RIP.
Loved it then. Love it the same now.
i think the cover art throws you off --- otherwise a pleasant surprise
Incredibly fatiguing over a full multi-track listen.
Despite some other cantankerous reviewers, I actually liked I'm In Love w/ My Car. I mean its about a car -- its gotta be a little cheesy. Just imagine Spinal Tap playing the song and it works. Otherwise, for you young-in's out there, listen to this top to bottom no interruptions because it is like a night at the opera. The rock opera.
Before this I didn't know what Bakersfield sound meant. Knowledge is my reward.
Easily the best studio album... but thats not why they exist so I'm conflicted. Listening to this makes me reminisce of flannel shirts and making holes in apples. Album holds its weight throughout so jam band haters can still appreciate.
My older sister and her friends completely obsessed over this tape.. as did most young adults. At the time the gravity of the record flew over my head. Took growing up, picking up an instrument, and spinning it to finally understand.
Classic example of a great hit, followed by... songs.
Grabs your attention but too clever for its own good by Stillness. Really a 2.5 but I'll bump up due to its newness to me.
Hip-hop throwdown with vocal interplay I like, but top-heavy and loses steam. While the chemistry and rhythms are iconic, the formula starts running out of gas.
