Classic 70’s swamp rock
2 or 3 generic blues numbers that let it down, but also 2 or 3 all time classics.
Favourite track: looking out my back door
90’s Brit Funk revival
Not for me, Jay Kay has a nice voice I suppose but the music is bland and overproduced, and very samey. Nothing stood out.
Favourite track: the one with the didgeridoo was at least funny
This album is from the future, made in 1979
Stone cold classic, everything about it makes you dance
Favourite track: I Zimbra
The guitarist is a nonce.
Am guessing it sounded better live than it does on record. Never been the biggest fan of The Who and this doesn’t do much to change my mind
Favourite track: The Ox
Dad never liked The Wall
Grew up listening to Pink Floyd but my dad always steered me away from it as he felt it was their weakest record. It’s all quite grand and pompous, at times dull, but tracks like the thin ice have excellent riffs and the whole flows together really well. Part 1 of brick in the wall is superior, tracks like mother let it down. Gilmour > Waters, Dad was right.
Favourite track: Comfortably numb
The start of one of the greatest album runs of all time
Not my favourite Radiohead album (in rainbows) but makes it close to my top ten from anyone ever. From start to finish immaculate, hard to pick a favourite track and changed and influenced British guitar music from its release. Just stunning.
Favourite track: Street Spirit (Fade Out)
All the Harmonies!
Seems to be the album where they stopped singing about surfing all the time, and moved towards the grown up pop of pet sounds. Not quite as good as that (nothing is) but I really like it. If anything it’s too short!
Favourite track: Help me Rhonda
Reminds me of school
I remember hearing Ms Jackson in high school, before viral was a thing, and it spread like wildfire, everywhere you went kids were singing the hook. I was only listening to punk and the time but it even turned my head and is probably the first hip hop song I remember loving. The album stands up today and one of the best Hip Hop records ever made. So many classic singles and only a little filler.
Favourite track: B.O.B
Not what I was expecting
Always thought Spiritulized were a dance act, so was pleasantly surprised.
Meanders along nicely, pretty melodies and reminiscent of velvet underground somewhat. Cover art is dreadful though.
Favourite track: You know it’s true
It’s ok
It’s fine, don’t love it but understand why people do.
Favourite track: Hey Joe
First Lana Del Ray album I’ve listened to in full
Got given the vinyl of this a few years back. Wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy it but it’s nice. Very moody, her voice is lovely and the songwriting is decent. Haven’t listened to any of her albums since but I’m sure I will at some point.
Favourite track: White Dress
The definitive snapshot of growing up in England at the turn of the millennium
This came out when I was 18, perennially stoned and surrounded by my mates. We listened to it to death, and listening to it now feels like a comfort blanket
Probably my favourite concept album ever. Definitely my favourite British hip hop album.
Favourite track: Could well be in
It’s alright I suppose
Only listened to about half of it. Is probably fine background music. Remember it being massive when it came out but having no interest in it. Now I’m 40 I can vaguely see the appeal, but hardly something I’ll listen on repeat.
Favourite track: they kind of all sound the same
Untitled
Liked it, drifts a bit in places but Wildfire is worth the price of admission alone
Favourite track: Wldfire
Top 10
This was my first eldest daughters favourite when she was 3 years old, for some reason she loved the cover of the record and would pick it out of my collection to listen to.
It’s obviously one of the greatest records of all time, and easily in my top 10. Loved it for as long as I can remember.
Favourite track: Sweet thing
1970s nonce
It’s just really fucking boring
One star for the title track
Favourite track: heroes
Not the best Springsteen album I’ve listened too (Nebraska/Born in the USA) but not the worst either.
The music is uplifting and there’s a a couple of really nice tunes on there, but sadly it’s all a bit forgettable.
Favourite track: waiting on a sunny day
*(Gets minimum 3 stars because he’s the boss)
Started it, was nice, didn’t get to finish it though so will revisit at some point
Excellent
Will wrote proper review later but love it
Favourite track: the boy in the bubble
Never heard of them before
That’s the main reason I’m enjoying this experience, if got stuck in a rut listening to the same handful of bands I’ve listened to since I was a teenager. Not sure how the gun club had totally escaped me up until now, because it’s exactly my sort of thing. It’s fucking great
Favourite track: preaching the blues
Lovely
Good pick for a Sunday dog walk. Nothing mind blowing but you know what you’re getting. More melancholy than I was expecting though
Favourite track: mood indigo
Still love it
Remember buying it when it came out on CD, and loving it then. It’s aged perfectly.
Favourite track: ego tripping at the gates of hell
Cool
Yeah it’s great. Apparently she’s a right wing loon now but this holds up, remember Galang coming out and liking it but listened to the whole thing without any skips and enjoyed the lot.
Favourite track: Sunshowers
Sister loved it
Remember my sister having the CD when it came out. Really liked a couple tracks but never paid much interest beyond that. It’s nice, but my opinion hasn’t changed much
Favourite track: a sight to behold
Good
Had only heard passenger and lust for life, but the rest of holds up as very good 70s punk. Couple of iffy moments, the sweet 16 ones a bit noncey (Bowie was involved obviously) but besides that a very good record.
Favourite track: Passenger
Misses Brian Wilson
Can’t really hear his influence so much on this. It’s fine. But far from pet sounds or the earlier records, lost some of the innocence and melodies that made me love them.
Favourite track: dunno, couldn’t really get into it
Do I have to?
Not my sort of thing normally, but it’s alright. Listened to about half of it in the car, overly jazzy stuff doesn’t really do it for me but some of it was listenable. Couple of stars because I didn’t turn it off immediately
One of the best hip hop albums of all time
Stone cold classic, as joyful as it gets. Full of amazing samples, uplifting rapping and nostalgia. The perfect antidote to gangster rap - silly, funny and smart. Loved it for ages.
Favourite track: eye know
Hated them for some reason when they first came out
I liked a lot of British indie bands at the time (Maccabees, bloc party) but they rubbed me up the wrong way. Felt like poseurs. But a few of their songs have popped up on playlists recently and I now understand the appeal. This is a really good record, and the singles stand up well after 20+ years. Rated highly.
Favourite track: darts of pleasure
Not for me
Tried a couple of songs, found it extremely boring. Turned it off and put on Spilt Milk by Jellyfish instead.
Favourite track: New Mistake (by Jellyfish)
Still not my favourite Radiohead record. Probably the one I’ve listened to the least, always found it a bit inaccessible. I’ll devote more time time it because I’m sure it will eventually grow on me 25 years later.
Favourite track: the pyramid song
Wasn’t expecting much
Remember being bored shitless by them as a kid. It’s super of it’s time but now as a 40 year old man I really see the appeal.
Not sure I can do too much of it but the songs I do like I’ll definitely listen to again. Solid 3 out of 5.
Favourite track: single
Another one my sister loved when we were kids
Remember fast car and talking bout a revolution being everywhere, but can’t remember hearing another one of her songs until listening to this. Didn’t realise baby can I hold you tonight was hers either, assumed it was one of those tracks that has just been in the public consciousness since the dawn of time. Overall I liked it. Super lefty, antiestablishment in its own way. Nice voice. Solid.
Favourite track: mountains o’things
Didn’t make it through the first track. Please stop sending me jazz
Favourite track: the first one
Yeah obviously it’s great
5 stars, move on
Favourite track: all apologies
The root of the music I love the most.
3 chord, 2 minute pop songs. Ramones stand with The Clash as one of the two best punk bands of all time.
Every track is brilliant, tough choosing a favourite.
Yeah I love them.
Favourite track: Judy is a punk
Better than the other Hendrix album you made me listen to
Actually really liked it. I still find it a bit boring in places but voodoo chile is massive
Favourite track: Voodoo chile
Brilliant. Will review properly later.
One of the best hip hop albums of the era
In a time when everyone was listening to drake, Kendrick came along with a proper hip hop album. Masterful storytelling and incredible production, my favourite of his and in my opinion in the top 3 hip hop albums of the decade
Favourite track: the art of peer pressure
One of the best albums of the 90s
So many hits, it’s lush and brutal and I love it.
Favourite track: stumbeline
No thanks, not in my Q zone
Loved it when it came out, still do now.
There wasn’t anything else like it at the time, taking influence from Springsteen and 80s heartland rock but making it dreamy and modern. Now loads sounds like it. Great record.
Favourite track: burning
Passed me by a bit
Being married to a swede means I’m more than familiar with ABBA, but haven’t heard any of these songs before. Makes sense because they’re not that memorable. It’s fine, just not great.
Favourite track: soldiers
Nice
Definitely my sort of thing. Nice pop songs in the 80s college radio style I really like. Will listen to again at some point.
Favourite track: our lips are sealed
Beautiful
Love it, got into Leonard Cohen late, but never listened to this in one go. But I love it and it’ll go on rotation now
Favourite track: so long, Marianne
Just found it a bit boring unfortunately
I know it’s a classic and all that, and it’s pretty enough, but I don’t think I’m the audience for it. Thanks anyway.
I made it through the first song
Which lasted about 6 hours. I enjoyed the first minute or so of it, but then it just kept going. Not sure if I was still listening to it by the end or if I’d just gone into a trance. Please stop sending me jazz.
Favourite track: isn’t it just one long piece of music?
Was aware of Scott Walker
But never listened to any of his stuff. Can hear his influence on so much of the music I love (Radiohead, Richard Hawley etc)
It’s very pretty. Will dig in to more of his records.
Favourite track: hero of the war
I saw Neil Young at Glastonbury in 2009, I think it was 2009
I can’t remember anything about it, I was fucking tanked after a day of speed, mushrooms and cheap lager. I’m sure I walked away from it thinking it was good though.
Never listened to this one, it’s pretty standard Neil young fare. Pretty enough.
Favourite track: see the sky about to rain
Love this album
In a just world they probably would have been bigger than Oasis. They’re certainly a better band (easy to compare since they peaked around the time Oasis came on the scene, both signed to creation and both mined a particular strain of music from the 60s and 70s).
Obviously massively inspired by 70s AM radio rock, Big Star etc, it’s full of big riffs and lovely harmonies. Opener the concept would stake a claim to be in my top 20 songs of the decade, but everything that follows is equally as cool, and the whole thing still sounds as good today as is it dead when I first heard it many years ago. Classic.
Favourite track: The Concept.
