Album Summary
Led Zeppelin is the debut studio album by English rock band Led Zeppelin. It was released on 12 January 1969 in the United States and on 31 March in the United Kingdom by Atlantic Records. The album was recorded in September and October 1968 at Olympic Studios in London, shortly after the band's formation. It contains a mix of original material worked out in the first rehearsals, and remakes and rearrangements of contemporary blues and folk songs. The sessions took place before the group had secured a recording contract and totalled 36 hours; they were paid for directly by Jimmy Page, the group's founder, leader and guitarist, and Led Zeppelin's manager Peter Grant and cost £1,782 (equivalent to £31,203 in 2021) to complete. They were produced by Page, who as a musician was joined by band members Robert Plant (lead vocals, harmonica), John Paul Jones (bass, keyboards), and John Bonham (drums). Percussionist Viram Jasani appears as a guest on one track. The tracks were mixed by Page's childhood friend Glyn Johns, and the iconic album cover showing the Hindenburg disaster was designed by George Hardie. Led Zeppelin showed the group's fusion of blues and rock, and their take on the emerging hard rock sound was immediately commercially successful in both the UK and US, reaching the top 10 on album charts in both countries, as well as several others, while it reached number one in Spain's albums chart. Many of the songs were longer and not well suited to be released as singles for radio airplay; Page was reluctant to release "singles", so only "Good Times Bad Times", backed with "Communication Breakdown", was released outside of the UK. However, due to exposure on album-oriented rock radio stations, and growth in popularity of the band, many of the album's songs have become classic rock radio staples.

When I refreshed this morning and saw this Album I yelled “LETS GO” out loud. Banger.
Long, slow and repetitive. A lot of squealing and wailing guitars which sound awful against his whining. Doesn't go anywhere. 2/5
Not as good at 2
I feel like I’ve heard of these guys before It’s without a doubt a good album and a really strong debut; Dazed and Confused is the best song on this album and right up there with the best stuff they’ve made. Page’s guitar playing as always is unbelievable and execution is nearly perfect for what they’re trying to do I think the meat of this album is a little weak compared to their greatest music. I don’t think the songs are quite as creative and the range is a decent bit smaller than what they’ve put out in the other 3 albums we’ve had from them. My Robert Plant theorem of “amazing in small doses, really gets on your nerves after a full album” holds true here. Still though, it’s Led Zeppelin and they know how to make good music. This album feels like if you took Zeppelin II and just made it about 25% worse, which is still a great album but the highs aren’t quite as high. Still an easy 9/10, only one Zeppelin album to go
Best: Your Time Is Gonna Come Green: Your Time Is Gonna Come, Communication Breakdown Yellow: Good Times Bad Times, Black Mountain Side Red: Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, You Shook Me, Dazed and Confused, I Can’t Quit You Baby
Dude it’s so good.
Not my favourite Zeppelin album, but a classic nonetheless. Really setting the stage for things to come.
Highlight: Black Mountain Side and great musicianship throughout. This had to be such a breath of fresh air at the time.
Maybe my least favorite Led Zeppelin album yet still a 4-star classic
I'm not sure if it's generally agreed that this isn't the most exciting of the early Zeppelin albums, but I've always felt that way. The blues influence is just a little too prominent and gets a little tiresome after a while. This is an amazing first album by any measure, but I just don't want to listen to it knowing what else was recorded shortly after this. How Many More Times goes on for eight and a half minutes which is about 7 and a half minutes longer than necessary.
This project keeps sending me Led Zeppelin albums, and the same thing keeps happening: I don't like them. I thought their debut could have a better shot—maybe it'd sound rawer, and the band hadn't yet fully gone up their own asses, but nope! There's still stuff on here I actively hate, like when they get slow and bluesy ("I Can't Quit You Baby," for instance). I liked the more rocking parts of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You," but I still find Led Zeppelin insufferable. No thanks.
7,5
36 hours to record an album on tape. Essentially it took them a week. Shows how good the good the quartet was individually and lightning strikes when forces of nature come together. Really added a heavy rock infusion into Jazz sound. One of the strongest debut records of all time. 8/10
Strong start middle and end. Shrieking highs, deep diving lows, and some cool almost experimental and progressive sounding sections in the longer songs like Dazed and Confused. I can hear how influential this album must be. You Shook Me might be my favorite blues rock song. I think I liked Led Zeppelin II just a little more though. 8/10
I enjoyed! No thoughts that are that different from my thoughts on other Led Zeppelin albums. I guess maybe that Black Mountain Side leaned into the folk music from that era than I’ve noticed on other albums. But otherwise just more of what they do well.
Good but not close to their best
amazing! meine ertsten viniyls von kar...c
Heard worse debut albums.
Only complaint is that I was over too soon.
Nothing on this album is doing it for me today. None of the true Zeppelin classics are on this album.
3.25 - I can see the foundations of what they would become, but a lot of this sounds the same.
Should be banned from listening whilst driving. A Toyota Yaris will become a Bullitt Mustang if driven under the influence of "Communication Breakdown"
Perfect
This is a top-tier guitar from Jimmy Page. Some iconic songs in here; happy for a re-listen. Awesome album
This is an excellent album. Good variety and plenty of texture. It doesn't have any of their true mega-hits, but good times bad times, babe I'm gonna leave you and communication breakdown are all great.
Zeppelin is good, don’t know what songs on this album specifically Good times bad times is sick. Rest of album is a little slower which is a vibe,
Robert Plant's voice gives me the chills 100% of the time. I can't possibly pick a highlight or lowlight from this album because the nostalgia factor on every single song just brings me so much joy. Led Zeppelin forever baby!
Classic rock and roll.
Epic, 5 of course.
#59 Not for me
Pedophilia be damned, these boys can PLAY
Great debut bar Dazed and Confused
Great debut from a massive group. Some great stuff here that showed these guys had their sound down right from the jump. They would go on to make even better records, but this is still a very strong entry in their discography.
I'm Gonna Leave You peor canción:You Shook Me
Truly Exceptional
lots of great songs, but nothing that really sticks with you. there's nothing on the caliber of black dog or stairway to heaven on here.
Levyltä löytyy kuitenkin zeppelinien yksi hienoimmista, Dazed and Confused
now THIS is a Zeppelin album. damn it was great.
I've not really listened to Led Zeppelin before, but this was pretty sick.
Park Zeppelin. Just like other albums. It’s such good music. But something about them has never been my favourite.
sure why not.
Zeppelinin esikoislevy rokkaa kovaa edelleen. Bändi oli löytänyt oman soundinsa jo heti uransa alkutaipaleella. Ihan täydellinen se ei kuitenkaan ole, sillä You Shook Me ja I Can't Quit You Baby ovat vähän tylsähköjä blues-covereita.
Decent. Enjoyable. Nothing overly special
Masterpiece
Just ok - tried going in with an open mind given how overplayed they are … guitars were great but otherwise thought it dragged a bit 3
Imagine being 15 in 1969 - sure you've heard some Beatles and Rolling Stones- you walk down to the suburban record store and find this weird cover of a bands first album, you give it a shot and then...... Is it my favorite LZ- no. But 1- physical graffiti redefined rock and one of the greatest runs in pop music, period. Compare it to the other LZ fine, but to other west coast crap that was lit around this time shows how this album will and still does stand the test of time.
RATING: 9/10 HIGHLIGHT: Dazed and Confused LOWLIGHT: You Shook Me
Fantastic debut album, one of their best outputs although not as classic as IV. Very diverse in terms of heavy vs soft. Babe I’m Gonna Leave You is sheer acoustic guitar beauty, as is Black Mountain Side, and then you have the bluesy noise of Dazed, the rambunctious Communication Breakdown… all really good stuff.
As usual I love the bangers like Communication Breakdown and Dazed and Confused but the folk tracks are just quite dull.
decent album, not a huge fan of his seagull singing but still overall good vibes 👍
I haven’t listened to this in years. I will say that it starts strong with Good Times and Bad Times, but then it devolves to some pretty bad White English Boy Blues covers.
The rock n' roll gods?
Første halvdel er klasse. "Good Times Bad Times" er en klassiker. Mye digg rock og blues inni her.
Phenomenal from start to finish. Blues forward, elegant, and so sexy.
It's so amazing to me that this is their debut album, and the staying power this has had before the last 55 years! A wonderful album from one of my favorite bands.
That’s what I’m talking about!!! So good!
Didn’t get into them until their 4th LP. Listening to this again it’s clear they had a good thing going. Definitely belongs on this list.
One of the best debut albums of all time!
Grappig, soms wat langdradig
8/10
4/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/led-zeppelin/led-zeppelin/ Not per se a big fan of the Zep, in the sense that I've just never listened to them much. But then when I do, I dig it! Each time it surprises me how much Jack White owed the the Zeps. With this one, I dig the first half a lot, but get a bit tired towards the end of the B-side. The songs are still good, but a bit too much of the same and not the high level of the first few songs.
While this is a good, at times even a great debut, I feel like Led Zeppelin achieved a much more steady and assured sound from II onwards. This one is bogged down by a couple of aimless and, frankly, not very interesting tracks. However, that is only a small part of the album, the rest offers an unparalleled rhythm section and some awesome guitar-work that the band is known and loved for. There is definitely plenty to enjoy here. Just ignore some of the lyrics. Favourite track: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You
Obviously, it is no controversial statement to say this album is among the greats. It brings blues into the metal era…with magnificent style. But its schizophrenia is where it falls short for me. It is trying to be both a leather jacket-donning badass on a black motorcycle and a psychedelic long hair with a macrome belt on a California beach. However, the psychedelic concept of wizards and warlocks that runs through the Zep never resonated with me. Psychedelia in the form of magical wonderment in awe of the cosmos - like what the Dead brought - just feels more…sincere, meaningful, sublime.
Good Times, Bad Times is the greatest kick-in-the-teeth opener of all time. Black Mountain Side points to their depth and where they’d go. **** because need to keep a star in reserve for the monumental achievements that would follow.
It’s feel ridiculous to review any Zep album, I assume if they are on this list it’s going to be a 5 star effort no question, but how does Zep 1 compare to the rest of their discography? Can’t deny the opener, perhaps the greatest song 1 album 1 ever. More Blues, definitely rawer (it is their debut) but not raw in a sense of sloppiness, the songs are just simpler than anything that follows. If I am ranking this based on solely my preference, I have this higher than 4, HotH and physical graffiti but it’s not better. I’m over thinking this, 5 stars 9.3 out of 10.
Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin (1969) “Good Times Bad Times” comes out of nowhere like a thunderbolt. I can only imagine what it must have sounded like hearing this for the first time in 1969. It’s probably the greatest opening track on a debut album ever. You can hear where the band came from, the Yardbirds, Cream, the Jeff Beck Group, but it also sounds completely different. All four members of this, for all intents and purposes, supergroup announce themselves immediately. Bonham’s drumming in particular is just insane. Absolutely insane. “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” gives you a glimpse of where Zeppelin would eventually go, and what they would ultimately perfect. That distinctly Zeppelin atmosphere, like an ethereal fog rolling over the English countryside, with this undercurrent of occult dread, mysticism, ancient legends and mythology, while Plant’s vocals soar over everything. It’s all there already, on the second track of their first record. A lot of this album is essentially a straight blues record, probably more so than any of their subsequent albums. But unlike Cream, Traffic, the Yardbirds, the Spencer Davis Group, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, or any of those other English bands interpreting American blues music, Zeppelin completely transforms it by running it through this live-wire electrical conduit. It sounds like the American blues being played by the thunder of the gods in Valhalla. “Dazed and Confused” is the apotheosis of all of this. It’s like being trapped inside a sonic hurricane. Plant belting, Page’s guitar answering him, Bonham’s thundering drums, and John Paul Jones’s ominous, prowling bass. Jones deserves special mention because his playing is so distinctive and so integral to the sound that you simply cannot separate him from the equation. He’s every bit as important as the other three. That’s the thing about Zeppelin. You can hear four extraordinarily talented musicians doing their own thing, but somehow it all comes together into something greater than the sum of its parts. And Jimmy Page is one of my absolute guitar idols. His riff-forward, Gibson-into-a-Marshall approach to guitar playing is basically my approach to guitar playing. I learned it from him. How could it be any other way? What struck me most about revisiting this album is how fresh it still sounds. When I recently listened to Van Halen’s debut again, as much as I love that record, I couldn’t really get past the feeling that I’d heard it a million times. My ears were tired of it. I couldn’t hear it with fresh ears anymore. I expected that might happen here, too, but it was the complete opposite. I’m hearing things I hadn’t appreciated before, marveling at the interplay between these four guys, and remembering exactly why I fell in love with this band in the first place. And now, having finished their debut for probably the thousandth time, all I want to do is listen to the entire Led Zeppelin discography again. Right now. That’s how good this record still is. 9.1/10
learning i don't love overly length guitar solos. but it was fine. 3.33/5
While it's not Zeppelin's best album, it's one hell of a debut. A sound like no other, talented guitar riffs and a voice that never fails to make me giddy, this album is definitely up there in the best debuts in music history. Everyone's gotta Led out at least once in their life, for sure.
decent
Got this on vinyl, need I say more?
Bastante mítico, enigmático muy bueno
Sorry, but I HATE Led Zeppelin
Uncs be jamming back in the day. No need for appraisal, so I give it a 4
Good Times Bad Times & Babe I’m Going To Leave You are without a doubt two of the best opening album tracks of all time - they absolutely hook you immediately and truly set the tone for the legendary career Led Zeppelin would have. From there, the album doesn’t falter - it’s utterly brilliant in every way. As an introduction to Zeppelin it’s a masterpiece. 5/5.
Legendary debut but not as consistent as some of their other albums. Very nearly a 5
I mean c'mon it's Led Zeppelin
it was nice
This doesn't even have the big hits on it, but it still slaps harder than a Foley artist creating combat sound effects with a raw steak. It slaps harder than my orange cat when she hears Electric Light Orchestra. It slaps hard enough that you might need a safe word while listening.
Well Led Zeppelin is pretty good huh. This album I’m less familiar with in their discography and less compelled to come back to so this is a solid 3.5
The first Jimmy Page solo in Good Times Bad Times fires me up every time You shook me- muddy blues all over it A-side is fantastic. B-side trials off a bit
Stop bitching about Zeppelin "stealing" other people's music and focus on that sinister-ass guitar wail in Dazed and Confused. Focus on the pure genius of Communication Breakdown. Bow down to the greatest rhythm section in rock music. Then go back to your own job and tell me how every thing you do doesn't rely entirely on the giants who came before. Another stupid trope like "there's too many albums by __________ on this list! Waa waa waaa
Fantastic record
It’s not my favorite Zeppelin record, but it’s still Zeppelin.
absolute banger
Babe Im gonna leave you ! How many more times (not bad)
Energetic, heavy, powerful with the perfect mixture of sentiment. Perhaps the greatest debut album of all-time? Very few debut albums stand up against a band’s more refined work, but Led Zeppelin is almost their pinnacle. From the bombastic opening, to the spine tingling middle, it has the essential Zeppelin element: epic scale. Everything feels big, something that would define their later albums. Robert Plant’s vocals are haunting in scope, and Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones work in a unique symbiosis. But the heartbeat of this album is John Bonham, whose drum work holds together every composition which unchained passion. A fantastic album, which reads like a greatest hits track.
Perfect! Led Zep taking their first baby steps, and what steps. A frankly ridiculous opening song in Good Times Bad Times and a thumping, blues-filled introduction to what was to come. 5/5
I think everything has already been said.
Yes, some of it was stolen, but it's still killer. Absolutely brutal debut with some spiky little tracks. Grast stuff.
They are the BEST at that dirty, filthy loud blues that everyone was emulating. This is what you emulate. It's not even close. Masterpiece.
Dynamic, melodic, powerful and constantly changing from song to song. Some extremely short leaving you wanting for more and other songs stretched out. Every individual performance is fantastic and yet melds into a whole greater than the aome of its parts. Don’t think. Enjoy.
Alright. Unnotable. We listened to it in the office and I kinda forgot it was playing. Madi said 3.75, I say 3.
Decent classic album. Never got into them but I don't regret listening to this.
