Jagged Little Pill
Alanis Morissette
This album has really stood the test of time. But I can’t help thinking about Dave Coulier from Full House, having to listen to these songs—written about him—year after year. What a brutal breakup legacy…epic.
I remember my mom had this CD in her player for years. It was her top album—she absolutely loved it—and she definitely tortured us with it. The very first track floods me with memories. And honestly, listening to it now, it’s actually not bad at all. A couple of songs feel a bit forgettable and don’t really go anywhere, but her vocal range and style are so distinct.
Now that I’m in my 40s, I find myself really enjoying the album. Some of the tracks hit hard. It’s awesome, and I totally get why it made the list.
But maybe my favorite part? It inspired Wesley Willis to write the song “Alanis Morissette” https://youtu.be/7_fg_D1noOY?si=W118n6FWsEg7aeom

"You know what the trouble about real life is? There's no danger music." Cable guy's use of somebody to love is forever imprinted in my brain. Song is haunting. the rest of the album is actually pretty good. I love the dreamy, echo-y drums. Makes me want to listen to Velvet underground though so I found myself skipping around a lot.

Man, Blues filtered through drugged up Brit rockers. Outside of the obvious hits, songs like Prodigal Son and Parachute Woman show their deep love and appreciation for the culture and heart of real Blues. They aren’t just white washing for money, it’s their contribution. Album is so short but powerful.
No Exceptions is my favorite on this one.

Led Zeppelin
I don’t think I’ve ever actually listened to this album and it’s pretty great. I love the crunchy blown out distorted times paired with the dreamy whimsical soft moments. I’m asking myself now have I ever really let the LED out?
Damn, Since I’ve been loving, you is a killer song.
Gallows Pole gets me going, surprise, mandolin, and banjo demonic Bluegrass what the hell is going on? Seems to get faster and faster. Amazing song
Tangerine is lovely
The next couple songs are an adventure through the dark mystical forest. Deep roots, Smokey, sunlight through the branches. We know we will make it out but we aren’t in a rush. The air is thick and we are high. This is our vacation… but then the levee breaks
When the levee breaks is one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. I’m a sucker for harmonica and it’s so essential in this song. What a masterpiece.
Great album, already started it over.

Dookie
Green Day
There are a handful of bands I stay loyal to—but only up to a certain record. After that, it’s like we part ways. Metallica. The Offspring. Tool. Green Day.
When it comes to Green Day, it’s the raw, dirty energy of their early work—everything before Dookie—that really sticks with me. It’s chaotic, fun, and just as listenable today as it was back then. That said, Dookie holds a special place. It was one of the first albums I truly coveted. I’d put it on repeat, over and over and over again.
For me, it was all about Tré Cool’s drumming. It was intoxicating—creative, fast, and completely hooked me. I locked into the drums so hard that I barely noticed the vocals on first listen. And the bass? Just as critical. The way drums and bass are brought to the forefront on Dookie is what sets it apart from later Green Day albums. They’re prominent, memorable, and absolutely essential to the experience.
Billie Joe Armstrong’s snotty vocal delivery works perfectly here. The production is flawless—each track flows effortlessly into the next, with a perfect balance of energy and mood. There are no lulls. The entire album is relentless. And that secret song at the end? It leaves you grinning and ready to spin the whole thing again.
“F.O.D.” is a standout. “Longview” has a bassline so good it makes me drop what I’m doing to learn it—which I have, and forgotten, more times than I can count.
If I had to choose ten albums to take with me into eternity, Dookie would make the cut. I’m not even wild about Green Day as a band overall, and they’re not exactly pushing boundaries here—but Dookie is just woven into my childhood. It has the right mix of dynamics to get my blood pumping.
Everyone needs that one album to sing along to. This is mine. When I’m floating in the ether, I’ll need something to belt.
Oh yeah, “She” is my fav sign along song.

Kollaps
Einstürzende Neubauten
Wow, didn’t expect this, completely unknown to me, german, scary but fun and beaming with influence, sonic-ly…on all of all my favorite bands. Lairs, Xui Xui, Pharkmon, Idles, Dan Friel, the list goes on. They are capturing an attitude and texture that I see strive for in my own music. It’s the challenged rethinking of “what is music”, collection of sounds? If so why can’t my collection be personal and different from your collection.
The beginning of the album hits strong but my only issue is the blown out speaker thrill ride is cut short with a number similar audio stretches that seem to lack depth and are almost meaningless… but is that the point, I don’t know.
Was prepared for a 5 but it slumped down to a 4 by the end.
Kollaps is a banger
Listen to The Screamers, they pre-date this band and were on the same Nihilistic journey but used distorted synths instead of guitar.

Fear Of Music
Talking Heads
You get in the car. Turn on the engine. Things are in motion. Road is clear and endless. Windows down, you floor it. There is no need for hesitance, no buildup, you just go, no stopping on this journey. Maybe you slow to turn a corner or coast looking up to the heavens, maybe you don’t but this car can’t drop below 50 mph or the vibe will explode. Oh and all your friends are in the car and it’s a party, love is in the air. Pupils dilated everything hits at once and then we crash….queue Drugs.
What a fantastic album listen to it a bunch growing up. Used it as pump up music when I used to paint the dorm rooms for Northwestern. It was my secret weapon.
I found this album on my own. It was random and I just fell in love with it. I think it was the first Talking Heads album I ever listened to in full. Heaven is such a beautiful song. The guitar work, insane. Bass riffs galore and the drums are steady and danceable.
Thanks 1001 gods… no more chocolate cake.

Can’t imagine the drummer saying don’t worry, Eric I don’t need to be in the full mix just put me over to the right channel out of the way. you guys are the real band. I’ll just muck everything up. Oh, and by the way, can you put shitty or mics on my drums thanks.
The vocals are haunting in a trying to imitate a ghost kind of way. Haunted house blues. Dance the night I’m looking at you. There are some pretty cool ribs in this song now just not fully on board.
As the album goes on, it’s fun and bouncy. I’m trying to get into it. I know cream is…. Cream of the crop.
Tale of brave Ulysses is a jam, though I think it has a great combination of all the things are trying to do on this album. It all kind of comes together in this song.
Last song is hilarious and leaves the listener in a good mood.
I feel I need to listen to this in the car

There’s some solid songs on this album, like Witness, I’ll Kiss You and the first song. I like when she gets a little experimental with her vocals. Never realized that the person who sings for Fever ray/the knife sounds just like Cyndi Lauper. Love all the synths!!!

The Chronic
Dr. Dre
Dr. Dre's production work is genius, repeating motiafs, his synth riffs and nods to songs of the past and the future. Father of G-funk, this album is a perfect example of the genre and gave fresh distiction between East coast and west coast hip hop.
Fav stand out track is DEEZZ NUUUUTZ, when I worked at Buddy Guys, Buddy would talk about blues songs and records that contained skits and dirty verisons of popular songs. It was called Bawdy Blues or Dirt Blues. This track seems like they are keeping this tradition alive. Also this song is totally Murder is the case that they gave me. https://open.spotify.com/track/1z9EbieFSoVLz7A3Q2DCiu?si=4e7046ac5df44293

What a delightful listen. Horns for days on the title track. The guitar work throughout this album it’s so fucking good. I’m a big fan of Steve Gunn and it’s so clear now that he’s so influenced by Richard Thompson.

Surf's Up
The Beach Boys
I have a really strange relationship with the beach boys. I really tried with them, but something has always creeped me out about their music when my kids were younger. I would put on the beach boys because it was easy for everyone to listen to and every time I would put them on This weird vibe would happen throughout the house and the kids will start acting out so I made it a rule that we couldn’t listen to the Beach boys. So I was really surprised when I didn’t get that vibe from this album. I looked up on Wikipedia that Brian Wilson didn’t really contribute much to this particular album. He was so burnt out from smile and so fed up with the group he just took his hands off the controls. I think Brian Wilson is the source of my creepy. Vibe smile is a really fucking weird song so I guess this album kind of spawned from the last song which is the title track from the album surfs up, it was supposed to be on smile. Brian Wilson talked a lot of shit about the recording process being a democracy on this album but I felt it was actually kind of a fresh take on what they are capable of. I don’t know if I’d listen to it again but overall it was kind of a celebration of instruments and music and love. Seems like no pressure.
Anyway, this album was really interesting. It was kind of like their eulogy for their past selves. I like the beginning track talking about something happened to the water. I thought it was cool that they took on an agenda started talking about things that matter to them.
Loved all the random noises in the background of all the songs and the way everything was recorded not polished seemed like anything goes in the recording studio

I listen to the South all weekend long it’s powerful. I need to see the movie. Read the plot and synopsis. I think it would help me more. Wish I could edit sorry, Zak. I can only speak on this as an album of music and not a soundtrack for now then.
The lyrics in this album are so in your face no innuendos here. Curtis transports you into the Superfly world Freddy’s dad is an incredible song the way he dances around different topics always bringing us back to the fact that Freddie died incredible storytelling plus catchy as hell.
I think I listen to it about three times and each time it was like the first time I was listening the groove in this album is so infectious great for cleaning the house

Parallel Lines
Blondie
It was a treat listening to Zak’s special lady. This album isn’t all winners. I’m pretty forgettable songs on here, but I would say more than half of the album is salad the songs that are popular. Still hold up the nerves cover at the beginning gets get pumped right out of the gate although the original is so much better and it kind of bums me out that people think it’s a Blondie original do yourself a favor and check out the rest of the nerve songs. They’re great.
My favorite part about listening to this album is a realization that one of my favorite female artist has been taking their vocal style from DebbieHarry play book, Kim Deal. Are certain parts of the album. I could’ve sworn I was listening to Kim deal it’s crazy. Best example of this is Sunday girl on this album. There is a song on Kim Del’s new album that basically rips off this song and I shall give you a link below to be your own judge overall solid album would listen to it again only reason I’m giving it a three is because there are some pretty forgettable songs on here as well.
One last thing, “I’m gonna love you too” is pretty close to “I wanna be sedated “…. Checked Debbie’s dating history… I see a Mr. Joey Ramone listed coincidence I think not

Bookends
Simon & Garfunkel
Two solid jump scares in this album, it it’s almost comical. First track is all whimsical here we go again, and then all of a sudden bam hitting the face with his low ass synth. Pretty cool way to set the tone for the album definitely took me off guard. I was almost about to skip this one. Glad I didn’t very experimental which is cool. I thought I’ve heard all the Simon & Garfunkel songs but I guess I’ve only heard a handful of these on this album or maybe I’ve skipped through it Being a captive audience to it. I can definitely appreciate the artistry.
Voices of old people was so lovely that’s cool that they are carving out little moments like that in the album. I think it’s hilarious. Also, that after the other book end reprise they smack you in the face again with the loud noise like the album just kind of repeats itself. Both of their voices are heavenly. I’ve always been a fan sometimes I’m just not in the mood to be lulled and rocked.
Miss Robinson is definitely a stand out. Radio hit here. The rest of the songs are just kind of pretty compositions and interesting takes on what you would expect from a Simon & Garfunkel song. Their instrumentation has always been so interesting. Save the life of my child. Does a similar thing that they do in the boxer. Using a lower register instrument and exploring the deep bottom so unique to them on this song it’s a lower active synthesizer, but on the boxer they’re using a bass harmonica which never even knew existed but it rattles your chest keeps you wondering what’s around the next turn?
Overall solid album I don’t know if I put it on often but certain moods for sure.

Hysteria
Def Leppard
Well, it happened. I thought that chocolate cake would remain on the bottom for me throughout this experience but hysteria is the worst album. I’ve heard so far on this list the whole 62 minutes and 32 seconds feels like parody to me. I get that this was pop back in the day, but even for pop music These songs are just silly. I ended up listening to this album twice hoping that my first impression was just some type of Grammy shell shock but the second lesson was worse than the first this fucking singer man.
So some backstory, I used to work a karaoke night at a really shitty bar in the suburbs my dad had a DJ company and he got the gig and the place was too trashy for him so I took over night after night. Pour some sugar on me would be sung multiple times tonight actually and it was an immediate excuse to get downright gross clientele there we’re all coheads And racist and had that special meth allure. Miley saving Grace on these karaoke nights was a little old woman who would come in dressed, had to toe and pink cowgirl outfit she would come in and request. These boots are made for walking by Nancy Sinatra. She would sing it. Everyone would share she’d walk right out. I loved her. She was the best
I drinking years were haunted by this. Pour some Sugar over me song coyote, ugly come out, and I think it revitalize this trash heap. Song became a Q for everyone in a bar to fake the sexiest. I remember one time I was at Joe’s on weed and the song came on. Everyone’s backs turned and they screaming at the stage the DJ playing it. I took advantage of the moment and started drinking everyone’s beers behind their back because I was broke and then I urinated in a garbage can None the wiser that’s what I think I was pretty drunk.
I get why this band exist. I understand why the album was made. These guys are just getting paid. My mom and my aunt’s all we put on Def Leppard. I get it not hating on the band not judging anyone who likes the band teach their own but why the fuck was this album on this 1001 list. Why do I need to hear this album before I die? What was significant substantial innovative about this Chazy ass album.
God of war has a decent beginning, and I started to become optimistic that there might be some hidden gems, but I was wrong. The song quickly jumped right back into the same formula. I think the reason I’m so mad at them and so mad that I had to hear this is I’m such a fan of reversing audio And making audio interesting by stretching it and time warping it and their use of that effect throughout this album, it is so on the surface like they took away form highlighted it clicked reverse, and left it weird effect man, this is some trippy shit.
Congrats hysteria you are my least favorite album so far

Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)
Wu-Tang Clan
This album is a masterpiece but the thing I really love about it is, raunchy and funny. Something you can’t just pop on around the fam or a work function. This album you put on for yourself. You’re close Buddy’s is an album that you blast in your car and transports you as an album that gets down to your dirty, dirty core yet enlightens you? So much fucking talent. You can spend hours researching the lore that they have built up. They are world makers, and story tellers. More Wu-Tang please.
I have such an affinity for old soul and Motown stuff that when I hair samples used so well like the one in cream it gives me the chills. https://open.spotify.com/track/6KZPEGJJ60IPBmIEeWAjPJ?si=tYzb4FnfQ1GuD1iASGtYWA

American IV: The Man Comes Around
Johnny Cash
I’m not crying you’re crying, man Bridge over troubled water… tear fest. Johnny Cash‘s voice is so deep and heartfelt soulful and beautiful on this album. You can hear all the heartbreak and pain with every lyric he sings.
This album actually was my introduction to Johnny Cash. Hurt in the title track with a man comes around. We’re both so prominent on the radio in the 90s and using tons of movies. I always thought that Johnny Cash, which is some lane country guy this album turned me around and allowed me to dive into his discography. Brilliant person.
Though And his guitar playing our pristine on this album, the true artistry here is the production work. This has to be one of my favorite Rick Rubin albums. He truly captured Johnny Cash‘s final moments and such an iconic modern way. Like a world Johnny Cash is still cool as fuck. Appreciate it now before you lose them forever.
When the man comes around, was one of Johnny Cash’s final songs and it’s gotta be one of my favorites. It’s got such a groove to it. Cool story what a bad ass.
I’m such a cover fan boy and her was one of those covers that completely transforms the song and is arguably better than the original.
Great fucking album RIP Johnny
