Album Summary
Hypnotised is a 1980 album released by The Undertones. The album, the second of four released by the band, was recorded at Wisseloord Studios in the Netherlands in December 1979, and at Eden Studios in London in January 1980, with the majority of the songs to appear on the album being written between March and December 1979. In addition, although the primary lyrical concern of the songs upon this album focused upon teenage angst, boisterousness, and heartbreak (as had been the case with their debut album), several of the songs upon Hypnotised are notably both lyrically and musically more sophisticated than material released upon The Undertones.Produced by Roger Bechirian between December 1979 and January 1980, Hypnotised was released on 21 April 1980, reaching number 6 in the UK Albums Charts and making Hypnotised the highest-charting album of their career. The original release of Hypnotised included two singles: "My Perfect Cousin", which was released on 28 March 1980 and reached number 9 in the charts; and "Wednesday Week", released on 5 July 1980 and which charted at number 11 three weeks later.

나쁘지 않은 분위기였는데 딱 귀에 꽂히는 음악은 없는 전체적으로 평범한 느낌의 앨범이었다. The atmosphere wasn't bad, but there weren't any tracks that really grabbed my attention; overall, it was a rather unremarkable album.
There were some fun parts on this album but overall this one didn't really grab my attention.
Perfectly pleasant, a bit stuck in 1980, and nobody’s rushing to the DJ booth to ask what song this is.
This sounds so generic, it sounds like AI. Holy shit.
Boringggggggg, the most generic 80s rock album. Didn’t really age well.
10385 songs in 12 minutes. Not really, but seems like it. From standard 3 chord trick punks songs, to elaboarate riffs as in You Got My Number, to beautifully crafted ballads like Wednesday week, there's no filler here, 60% approaches brilliance, 20% falls a little short, 20% achieves it.
The boys do it again, similar to their first take but with a bit more variety this time
Uh oh... It looks like another early 80s British act. It's ok just midddd
great album cover
a few good songs, but they all give the same vibe.
A bit of a stretch to call this punk I think but it was decently listenable nonetheless.
Quirky but enjoyable, simple tracks.
No private session used for Spotify. The only takeaway from this album is that the singer sometimes gets on my nerves, otherwise quite forgettable.
More mediocre punk rock albums from this book, especially from yet another UK band that never made it anywhere outside the isles. It also sounded a bit similar to 80s R.E.M. at least to me.
UN GENERE CHE NON MI APPARTIENE E NON RIESCO A FARMI PIACERE. SARÀ CHE ASCOLTARLO CON LE CUFFIE IN CAMERA NON È IL MODO PER SENTIRE QUESTA MUSICA… SONO FIGLIO DEL MIO TEMPO. OPPURE SEMPLICEMENTE LIMITATO. OPPURE FA CACARE EH. 2/5
#285/1001 🇬🇧☘️ Fast and fun pop tunes from Derry. I've always thought them more of a singles band than an album band. Coincidental that i picked up a copy of this last week. Best Tracks: My Perfect Cousin, Wednesday Week, What's with Terry, Hypnotised.
Never heard this before! I love hearing new music. Welp, I do not care for the singers warble, nor his tone. The instrumentation isnt really my cup of tea. I get that people are into this type of music but I am not that guy. I can hear how this is a stepping stone into more polished pop-punk but that doesnt mean I enjoy it. I dont need this in my life and I certainly didnt need to hear this before I perish. That being said, its not like this is even remotely close to the worst thing Ive been subjected to on this project. 2 stars.
Perfectly fine but, like a lot of punk stuff from the time, it gets very repetitive. Makes me appreciate London Calling a bit more.
There’s only so much a band like this is going to that might a little more out there or radical. It was all fine enough but nothing that made me particularly distinguish the first from the 18th song. It may have had an influence in artists that followed more than I expect but can’t see this having the longevity of some of their peers as a lasting impression.
The Undertones grow up, but lose some of their vitality in the process. Tight, well-crafted tunes but not much more.
This is very samey and wearing. My perfect cousin is funny and melodic but its the exception not the rule
A bit repetitive but still fun and catchy.
Bit pointless
This is not totally my thing but still really good!
Just a cool punk album, what more can I say really. It doesn't do anything hugely groundbreaking that hadn't been done before, but it's hard to complain about an album like this that's simply just good at what it does. It still gives you everything you want out of a punk album, the short and aggressive songs, witty political lyrics, and musicianship that's sort of bad, but in an endearing waym honestly all this is really lacking is originality, it has everything else other than something to make it stand out above the rest of the punk albums from this era.
Hypnotised by The Undertones is such a nothing album. It's easy enough to listen to, but that's about the best thing I can say about it. Nothing particularly happens, nothing stands out, and by the time it's finished, I was struggling to remember much of what I'd just heard. For me, The Undertones are a bit of a one-hit wonder. "Teenage Kicks" is an absolutely brilliant punk song, full of energy, attitude and a fantastic melody. Unfortunately, it's not even on this album, and nothing here comes remotely close to matching it. The biggest problem with Hypnotised is just how average it all sounds. It's very standard, run-of-the-mill punk rock, with the same sort of guitars, vocals and melodies running through most of the songs. There's nothing particularly offensive about it, but there's also nothing exciting, original or interesting enough to make me want to listen again. I generally enjoy punk when it's full of energy, catchy hooks and a bit of attitude, but this just feels flat. The songs come and go without leaving much of an impression, and the whole album becomes rather forgettable. Even the short running time couldn't save it from feeling a bit dull. I know The Undertones have their fans, but I really don't understand what makes this album special enough to deserve a place on the list. It's not terrible, just incredibly average. Give me "Teenage Kicks" any day, but I won't be rushing back to Hypnotised. Favourite track: "Under the Boardwalk". I actually really enjoyed their cover of this classic. Easily the highlight for me. Least favourite track: Take your pick, really. Nothing was particularly awful, but almost everything else was very meh. Just a collection of forgettable punk songs. Album artwork: Cool album cover. Probably more memorable than most of the music.
The music inoffensive, but boring to my ears.
Undertones' debut album gave me the best OG punk vibes. This gave me vibes like if the Aquabats had been born in the 80s, and I love them even more now.
Well I said I’d forget about them two days ago and they didn’t want me to! I liked it more than that other album!
Didn’t leave me as hypnotised as the other Undertones album
Alright. Wouldn't write home about it though.
Funny texts, nice music
Fun!
who are these lobster clowns from derry ooo it's giving new wave post-punk overall it's not bad, kind of a new way of doing an old thing 💥there goes norman 💥hard luck 💥my perfect cousin
Early pop-punk, good enough for the time but I think now it's just a historical curiosity.
High two. These dudes need to get laid
His mother bought him a synthesizer Got the Human League into advise her remains one of my all-time favorite lyrics
Apparently we own this on vinyl--who knew? Good stuff.
This had good energy, but I do feel like it was formless, like the songs sounded very similar to one another.
Serviceable!
Čak su mi i slatki! Malo su drukčiji od same same albuma ovog žanra iz tog razdoblja. 2/5, 4/10
I really enjoyed this.
Another one of those bands that really only seems to be popular in the UK. So far they sound pretty promising. Reminds me of some old British pop punk. Pretty great album with some catchy hooks. Surprised I've never heard this band before because I feel like they would have totally come across my path when I was getting into old British punk in my 20's.
This is a lot of fun. It's interesting - it's punk-ish, but not as angry. With 2-3 more listens, these songs would easily get stuck in my head. Side note: For me, there are a quite a bit of albums and bands that aren't big in the US, but were pretty big in the UK. I'm curious if this list of 1001 Albums was curated by someone from the UK?
I liked this record fine back in the day but it wasn’t really my style. It was fine and all, just not angry and aggressive how I like my punk rock. Now, many lifetimes later, I like it much more. I can hear the influence it has on later pop-punk and power pop, particularly those 90's bands during the pop-punk "explosion" of that era. It’s one of those "quietly" influential records where when you listen to it, you're like "oh. wow... that influenced X, Y AND Z. It holds up incredibly well. In fact, I'd say I like it much more now than I did "back-in-the-day". It has the heavy guitar riffs of punk and the catchy songs and angsty teen lyrics of pop. There are hooks for days and just enough attitude. It’s a really good record. It's essential listening as "roots" music for any fan of 90's pop-punk.
Solid rock album. Nothing too crazy but some really good performances where they appear for sure. A smooth listen with a good level of brevity.
Second album I've heard on here from The Undertones and even though I've never heard of them before this, it's another great album. This album sounds similar to The Clash. I enjoyed it a lot and will definitely be listening to it again.
Punk beach boys
3.5
You already know it's going to be bad when you see "Hypnotised" spelled with an "s". Diluted punk. Fun fact: That's David Bowie on the cover.
Sometimes I hate this list for all the awful British albums nobody’s ever heard of, but sometimes you have to love the awful British albums.
It’s nice to come across a record where the musicians don’t take themselves that seriously and are willing to just have fun and try things with their songs, because that’s definitely what I’m getting from The Undertones. It’s some nice, Northern Irish rock, and that’s about all it is.
OK.
Consistently good, rarely great. Wednesday Week is a real gem Rating: strong 6/10
I only know The Undertones for "Teenage Kicks", so went into this album intrigued. Within half a song, I thinking,I know that voice...? Turns out, it's Feargal Sharkey! Who knew! Anyway, I actually liked the album and ended up listening to it twice while on the train from London. Hypnotised and My Perfect Cousin we're good. I think it's a 3.5 stars, but I'll be generous and round up.
It was a solid punk album. Lots of songs packed into 45 minutes, all very quick hitting and pretty fun to listen to. Nothing completely stands out so it’s a 3 for me.
Fun punky pop with some nice riffs that doesn't take itself too seriously. I'd forgotten about Sharkey's weird vibrato - on another day it would have annoyed me, but not today! The album was a couple of songs too long, but a nice variety of tempi and riffs. A 3.5 for me, I'll decide tomorrow when I vote whether I'm rounding up or down.
kinda reminded me of sparks
British punk usually doesn't do much for me, and unsurprisingly this didn't do much for me either. It's not bad, but it isn't great. Mid 3.
Another collection of short catchy pop/punk tunes by a group of nerds singing about girls. classic undertones and entirely enjoyable. funky and fun cover of under the boardwalk 3.5 stars
Great punkish record
This man is an enemy
I usually like this kind of music but it kinda annoyed me, not sure why it’s “one of the best of all time”. Doenst feel like essential listening.
Good one
music is love
i found his voice soooo irritating. i didn't love the actual music either.
It's ok
Meh
It was okay, nothing special.
A solid, enjoyable listen that captures their signature pop-punk energy. While it features some incredibly catchy tracks and great hooks, it doesn't quite reach the heights of their debut. It's a fun album, but a few of the songs blend together.
Completely enjoyable, even the cover of under the boardwalk has its charm. Yes it one dimensional but it makes up for it
like id the dead Kennedys jelly fronted ween sort of? not bad but not my favorite
Really nervous and edgy energy about these guys -- like they're shaky from too much caffeine -- but in a good way. And, seriously, you have to love 15 songs in 38 minutes.
Fun little garage band.
Punk / pop punk. Not too bad but didn't really stand out either. I'm not a huge fan of the vocals but the rest of the music was good.
An energetic, fun, but ultimately pretty forgettable record.
Fun! I enjoyed it.
Music was fun but the vocals and lyrics were a little too wacky for me, just not my favorite style!
Widely regarded as a pioneering band of the first wave in pop punk, The Undertones paved the way for countless bands that would follow in their footsteps. Hypnotised, aside from having an amazing cover photo, eschewed the political and nihilistic trappings of punk and normalized songs about cute girls and hanging out with your friends. The lightness of the content is buoyed by lyrically sharp rhymes, even sharper punk hooks, and the earnest but punchy teenage angst filtered through Feargal Sharkey's vocals. The record isn't a masterpiece, suffers from pacing issues, and is maybe three songs too long. None of that matters much because punk is supposed to be kind of messy and is forgiving as a genre, but more importantly, Hypnotised is a whole lot of fun to listen to.
Lekker, tussen punk en ska. Feargall Sharkey als zanger 🤔
Good album ! There was one annoying song cause it kept on repeating, something like talking or talked to ? It was really annoying but I really liked the album over all ! Has a real sense of teen spirit, feeling young, fuck around and find out vibe :))))) will relisten !
What do you do when your band writes one of the best songs ever about being a teenager, and then you grow up a little? Teenage Kicks is an absolute classic, but this album is a perfect distillation of that 18-21 era when you're no longer a 'teen', not quite an adult. Something like 'My Perfect Cousin' is still from the viewpoint of a youngster, and 'More songs about chocolate and girls' isn't a bad summing up of the whole LP. As lifechanging as it may have been in 1980, it doesn't have the bite of someone like Sex Pistols or the swagger of The Clash, but they do sum up the angst of being a young man very well. A solid 4.
Really fun. There's a lot to love. It's chill and chirpy. Under the boardwalk was a nice surprise. It's definitely not my favourite undertones though - lacks some of the cool punky energy of other records.
if the replacements and television had a baby
Not really my thing.
Brisk and fun (although not sure about Under the Boardwalk) but Fergal's voice reminds me too much of his later, rather dull, stuff so it takes the shine off a bit.
A couple of standout tracks but in the end didn't quite get above "I enjoyed it" for me
I guess I missed on or they changed when they serve us new records. I cant tell. I was busy this day and it was days ago so who knows anymore. But glad I didnt miss this. This type of music is my jam. Couldn't chat gtp out a more me record but with actual real music and not some sloppy to be clear. Its just some solid fun early 80 British isles punk rock. And this is a blind spot for me. Im very into the British 70s stuff. The early punk but after it rolls over to the 80s I tended to lean into the so cal hard-core stuff. Other than the clash but they are undeniable. But I just dont know thay much about stuff from this place in this era. I got the new wave stuff but more straight punk is a blind spot. This one is just fun. It screams that from first glimpse. The goofy crab restaurant photo in the cover is about all you need to get the vibe. Its just goofy fun. Lots of fun stuff. I do really like the cover of under the boardwalk. I like the original too and this is a fun take. My perfect cousin is a fun track about that perfect relative everyone compares you too. Everyone has felt that at some point. Whiz kids kicks ass and might be my favorite one here. And many others. It does lose a bit of steam in the last third maybe. Too many slower songs one after another. Not my favorite but some cool sections in songs I dont love. Nine times out of ten is such an old-school throwback. I love that 50s or 60s pop rock vibe with a punk wrinkle. Just sick. The song itself kinda fizzles out but its a cool vibe. Thats what I get most. A cool fun juvenile vibe. It just feels good to listen to. Very enjoyable for 95% of it. Hard to get much better than this
It was fine.
buen disco
The Undertones — Hypnotised Pre-Listening: I’m not even gonna pretend like I know anything about this band. Apparently they’re from Derry, which I’m guessing is why they’re lesser known for me. Just gonna dive in. Best Song: Hard Luck. One of those songs with an idiom title, digestible drums and then letting the guitar do its thing. Pretty hard to mess up the lyrics, but they didn’t. Really catch post-break-up tune. Runner-up: Under the Boardwalk. They had me with the opening base line. Odd but tolerable cover for the album. Feels rebel and pub rockish. Third Place: My Perfect Cousin. According to Spotify this is their flagship song. It’s catchy but kind of a strange premise to write a song about. Basically, a ‘you don’t know him like I do’ kinda song. Post-listening: I hate being negative, but this album just didn’t do it for me. I feel like this kind of band walked so a band like The Kooks could run. While I love The Kooks, The Undertones were just too oddball for my taste. The first half of the album feels like something Poindexter from Revenge of the Nerds would listen to and then the second half feels like a band Spicoli would love. It goes from nerdy Undertones to surfer Undertones and all the while featuring lyrics that feel like Irish drinking songs. I’m glad I listened to it, but let’s leave it at that. Rating: 5/10 Stars: 2/5
I liked this but preferred the self titled, which is also on the list. This really begins to run out steam four or five songs in, and the dreadful version of Under The Boardwalk does it no favours.
Nerdy but was pretty fun
Noice, toit, cool cool cool
I have never heard of this band and so have zero expectations going in. This came out when I was in high school but I guess it was never played on rock radio in the US. Maybe something will ring a bell. "boys will be boys" - this phrase was used in 3 songs (songs 1, 4 and 10) and one of the 3 songs was named "Boys Will Be Boys". Seems a little redundant. First time through I kept thinking this was pretty generic. And it kinda just drags along - for 15 songs! There was a point where I was thinking "this has to end soon" - but there were 7 songs left. The songs go by quickly I guess - with each song averaging about 2.5 minutes. I went back and looked at what else was out around this time. There is a reason these guys weren't that popular - there just was so MUCH better stuff coming out around that time from bands (also from the UK and Ireland) like Elvis Costello, Police, U2, Pretenders, even Joe Jackson - with a lot of these other artists operating in a similar pop/punk category but with slightly different styles. I didn't hate it but I don't feel like I need to listen to most of this again. I ended up liking 1 song - the extended version of "Hard Luck" called "Hard Luck (Again)" which was actually not on the original album but was on the B-Side of that song apparently. Liked songs on Spotify: 1/15 Rating: 1/5
This is #day752 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… here's to my second and final record by The Undertones. Some good 'ol early '80s pop-punk here. Everything sounds tight and pleasant to the ears. Do we need two albums from this band on the list, though? I'm not sure. This is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day753.
Nice high energy. Production is immaculate, especially compared to a lot of other stuff coming out in the early 80s.
twas good
Its a joyous kind of album that gets better after a couple of spins. It may not be the first of its kind, but I can see an influence in many later bands from my era, The Enemy spring to mind
