Slipknot
1/5
I once worked at a pizza place with this guy. He was the biggest idiot I think I've ever met. Not an exaggeration. It took him 40 minutes to deliver something across the street. He one time got pulled over by the cops because he was swerving and told them he was "sleepy" and our manager had to go pick him up and finish the delivery. He one time cut something into 17 pieces ( a prime number mind you) when it was supposed to be 16 (still wonder how he did that). He also refused to put just one screen on things in the oven that required it because "then too much radiation would get in".
But the thing that I think he was stupidest about was that this kid (despite being an aspiring rapper I think) acted like he had never heard songs before in his life. He once got Eminem confused with the Hamilton soundtrack. A lot of us at the store were big fans of Juice WRLD (personally I was lukewarm on him but whatever). This kid acted stunned to learn about him as we explained to him about his at the time recent passing. The next day, a different manager is playing Slipknot as we close, this kid dead-ass goes up to her, points to the sky, and says "Man I was just listening to him, R.I.P Juice!". As we all stare at him in complete confusion.
Anyways a few months later he beat his girlfriend in our parking lot and we got him arrested never saw him again so fuck him. Slipknot sucks and so did he fuck him.

It was weird. I think getting so many experimental ground breaking albums in such a short time is taking it's toll on me.

The Young Rascals

I mean it was fine but I'm sure there are hundreds of records that could have taken it's place and literally no one would have noticed. We already have the Beatles at home type energy.

Linkin Park
1/5
How? How is this band so beloved? Limp Bizkit is so hated that even me, someone who was in diapers at the time of their musical relevance thinks that Limp Bizkit jokes are overused. (rightfully so I may add) And yet Linkin Park is beloved? I mean I've heard a few of their bigger songs before and they really weren't my style but I expected better than whatever this is. You have to be max age of 14 to find this cool. Is nostalgia really that powerful for people?

Buena Vista Social Club
3/5
I have never really listened to Cuban Music so this was an interesting start to this project. At first, I wasn't really into it but there were some songs, especially near the middle of this project that I found to be really interesting. There is a Wim Winders documentary about this album that I'm definitely going to watch. 6/10
Electric Light Orchestra
4/5
It's a hard album to hate. The only song I knew coming in was Mr. Blue Sky but a lot of the other songs have that cheery upbeat tone to them. The synth motif used throughout is interesting. Just a fun and enjoyable listen.
8/10
Eminem
3/5
Like every white boy from the Midwest, I had a huge Eminem phase in middle school. Outside of occasionally going back to the MMLP though, I don't think I've actually listened to one of his albums in full since high school. Most of these songs are classics if you can get past how bad they have aged.
7/10
Parliament
3/5
I know my dad loves this album. Never really got into funk but I actually recognized one of these songs from Always Sunny of All Places. It was alright but I don't see myself revisiting this any time soon.
6/10
Nas
5/5
I mean, some albums you just don't need to say anything. If Illmatic isn't the most respected rap album of all time, it's at least in the top 5. I've heard it a few times, and it's the definition of a classic. Either you like rap or you don't and it's the same probably for this album. It's full of classic after classic. Some of the sounds used for beats here are insane.
9/10
The Rolling Stones
3/5
It's fine. I've never been super into the Rolling Stones. Brown Sugar has aged badly and most of the other songs were not that memorable but it wasn't a bad listen.
6/10
David Bowie
4/5
Louis Prima
2/5
Not really feeling this. Most of the songs sound the same and the Big Band sound is not my style. I think I heard one of these songs in Home Alone or something one time, and another one which was a cover that I knew. Also sounds like a lot of these songs were originally old songs written by black artists that only got popular later when this white guy covered them.
3/10
Billy Joel
2/5
Meh. Some good but dragged in places. Overall I don't think I'll ever listen to it again.
4/10
Stereolab
4/5
Never heard of this album, and I think had only really heard of this band in passing. I had no idea what to expect. I was blow away by it's interesting electronic sound.
8/10
The Stooges
5/5
Now we're fucking talking. The Stooges have always been one of the best bands out there and I'm a big fan of them here. 7 songs, 37 minutes and they all slap. This might just be them at their best right here.
10/10
The Everly Brothers
1/5
If Music sounded like this still I might have already killed myself
2/10
Supertramp
3/5
Super fun for the most part. A few times it just kinda felt like background music but it was definitely an enjoyable album to listen to.
6.5/10
Sepultura
2/5
For a metal album, the worst part of it is the Metal. There are basically two albums in here. One is a traditional metal album, sung in English that is meh. The other adds it's Brazilian roots to it and is amazing. More of that, please.
5/10
Manu Chao
3/5
Steely Dan
3/5
TBH I always thought of Steely Dan as more Southern/ Country rock but this was pretty groovy
Dead Kennedys
5/5
Is this the best punk album of all time? If not it's top three easy, and defiantly the best Hardcore Punk album ever, as well as perhaps the one I listen to the most. I mean California Uber Alles is a top ten song all time, and you got hits like Holiday In Cambodia, Lets Lynch the Landlord, Kill The Poor and When Ya Get Drafted, all in a 35 minutes album. Perhaps the best punk band of all time at their peak.
10/10
Paul Weller
3/5
I enjoyed the album but will probably never listen to it ever again.
6/10
Soul II Soul
3/5
Never heard of this album but I recognized a couple of songs. It was alright.
6/10
Jeff Buckley
4/5
Always knew that this album was going to be great but this project finally forced me to listen. Didn't disappoint the dude had a great singing voice.
8/10
The Who
2/5
WTF was this theatre core ass album?
3/10
The Waterboys
3/5
The first really long album I've run into, with multiple 6+ minute songs which were definitely the worst part. The shorter songs with more energy were a lot better tbh.
6/10
Rush
3/5
Enjoyable but outside of XYZ and Tom Sawyer it's not very memorable.
7/10
50 Cent
4/5
Honestly I only really got in 50 recently, despite the fact that he is a legend. Anyways, tons of bangers here even if it's a bit on the long side.
7/10
2/5
My first album here that wasn't on Spotify. Started out good but quickly felt like a Bettles ripoff, and also a song where the singer talks about being a fruit nut, and threatening (?) to blow someone a Raspberry. IDK.
5/10
The Velvet Underground
4/5
Very good. Velvet Underground just makes banger after banger
8/10
Fela Kuti
5/5
Probably the best first listen I've had so far. I don't know how often I'm going to listen to 12-minute Afro-Beat songs but I'll enjoy it when I do.
9/10
Rufus Wainwright
2/5
Talking Heads
4/5
The bad part about listening to a normal Talking Heads album is everytime a song from Stop Making Sense comes on, I remember that the version on there is better, and if it isn't on Stop Making Sense I just think what a version of that song would sound like.
8/10
The War On Drugs
3/5
I've never really "got" The War On Drugs. They aren't bad just never really clicked with me. I've seen them live at a festival one time and thought they put on a show but I don't really remember anything from them.
Anyways 6/10
Mekons
4/5
At first this was kind of a meh album, but about halfway through it clicked and I realized this album is amazing.
8/10
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Short but good, hard not to like
8/10
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4/5
The Yeah Yeah YEahs have been a band that I've always liked and listened to but never fully delved into until now. Came in with high expectations because of that and was not disappointed. This rocked and was very mesmerizing in a way.
8/10
Alanis Morissette

Laibach
1/5
Well, It's good to know Yugoslavian Industrial Music is not my thing ig.
2/10
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
Solid old-school country rock not really much more to add. CCR is CCR.
7/10
Fugees
4/5
Don't honestly know why I've never really listed to the Fugees before this is right up my alley.
8/10
Paul Simon
2/5
I’ve heard some Paul Simon but this isn’t his best
Portishead
3/5
Second time listening to this album. Better than the first time for sure. Could see myself listening a third time soon
7/10
Red Snapper
2/5
I'm not usually one for ambiant music like this, I guess I listen too intently but it wasn't bad even if it felt like music to put on in the background.
4/10
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
This is the greatest rap album of all time. At least top 3 for me. Anyone who says TPAB is better is either pretentious or lying. I'm also shocked by the amount of low 1-2 star reviews for it on this site. I know that rap isn't for everyone but a shocking amount of them showed a lot of closed-mindedness. (which if you're going to do a project like this seems insane, at least to me. The whole point of this was to broaden my musical horizons and discover music I never would have found before). I've seen a lot of people calling the lyrics weak (are you even listening) and misogynistic/ sophomoric and like... that's the point. Kendrick is able to portray a kid growing up in the rough streets of Compton, trying to do everything to do good in his life but constantly weighed down by every single person around him. All told in a way where this album is closer to cinema than it is music to me.
I feel like it's rough to give something on here a perfect score because it always takes me a few listens to really, really truly get an album and this is the same case here but still, Kendrick is head and soldiers above almost everyone in his era of rap and this is still his magnum opus to me.
10/10
The Doors
3/5
I was ready to give this like a 8 or 9/ 10 but then I listened to the lyrics on Alabama Song... Jim Morrison yikes my guy what are you doing?
5/10
The Byrds
3/5
Came in expecting a Beatles rip off and it started out that way but turned a lot better in the end, mostly because this was surprisingly experimental. After that, it became a weird mix of classic and experimental that was quite interesting.
7/10
Pink Floyd
4/5
I've always had a contentious relationship with Pink Floyd. Most of my musical taste came from my dad, who is one of the biggest audiophiles I know. The man could give you the history of everyone from Sinatra to Outkast and listened to them all. Despite this, for some reason, he haaaated Pink Floyd. I never really knew why because he seemed to like a lot of similar bands but outside of Wish You Were Here he would turn the channel every time they came on the radio.
I followed his lead for the most part when it came to music. In a way, I used him as a judgment on whether music was "good" or not so for the longest time, I considered Pink Floyd to be overrated. Then around college, I finally listened to DSOTM for the first time, and like every college student was absolutely blown away by it. I tried listening to the rest of the Pink Floyd discography but never really got into it (I was not a good listener then, and still probably not great now but whatever)
I'm glad I finally really listened to this album because while I always knew about the story of "The Wall" and the general concept I hadn't actually gotten able to listen to it fully and as someone who truly loves to listen to and hear stories in albums, it was great to here one of the best concept albums in full for the first time.
I said a lot without saying much, whatever
8/10
Jeru The Damaja
3/5
A solid but not spectacular East Coast Hip-Hop album. It's a good listen that I could imagine listening to a few more times but compared to Illmatic, The Infamous and Enter the 36 Chambers, it's not something that's going to stand out.
7/10
Weather Report
2/5
Wallpaper music, I don't even really know anything about jazz and I'm disappointed that this is on here compared to probably better stuff.
3/10
The Beta Band
2/5
Listen to this while at work and I think that was the right way to listen to it. Not much to think about here.
4/10
Coldplay
4/5
People forget how good early Coldplay was before they sold out.
7/10
Fiona Apple
4/5
Great album. Criminal gets stuck on my head every time I listen to it.
7/10
The Police
2/5
Kinda boring and all over the place
3/10
Gorillaz
5/5
You know, compared to the next two albums they would release, I feel like Gorillaz's debut is a little bit overshadowed. It doesn't have the narrative tightness of Feel Good Inc. or Plastic Beach, and in a way, the sound here is a bit more wild and all over the place, maybe even garage/ punk. You can definitely tell the more DIY sound as Damion Albarn tries to figure everything out and I kinda miss that on the next few albums, even if they are better overall.
9/10
Jamiroquai
3/5
It's another ok but completely forgettable jazz album. Been very disappointed in their selection so far (not that I know much of anything about jazz)
6/10
Supergrass
5/5
Really good, not for everyone i suspect but this was right up my alley
9/10
Ms. Dynamite
4/5
A solid record, it's honestly so hard to go bad on these old school hip hop records we should go back to that.
7/10
Common
3/5
It's fine but I don't have a lot to remember or say about it.
5/10
The United States Of America
2/5
Really weird and not a great road trip album, which is how I listened to it. Also way too long. Maybe if I gave it more attention I'd like it better.
4/10
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Fuck man Jimi is the best guitarist of all time. And this is him just at the top of his powers (almost, personally Are You Experienced is a tad bit better) he just makes sounds only he can make I don't need to tell anyone that though.
9/10
Funkadelic
3/5
1/5
Well... At least now I can say my Limp Bizkit hatred is justified and that I've given them a fair shot, not just because most people hate them. Sorry, but this was unlistenable at times.
1/10
Barry Adamson
2/5
Interesting for sure, but boring at times and honestly terrifying at others. I'm seeing a lot of people note that one of the songs was in a David Lynch film and it makes a lot of sense. I've never been a David Lynch fan tbh, kinda like this album. I understand the appeal and I'm probably in the minority but just doesn't click.
4/10
Heaven 17
3/5
Enjoyed it decently enough for a synth-pop album. One song was straight-up a Buzzcocks song, though I don't know which one came first.
6/10
Beatles
4/5
Roxy Music
3/5
Fine. But will never listen to it again.
6/10
Throwing Muses
5/5
Seemed quite good from what I could find since it wasn't on Spotify. Sounded like early Riot Grrrl which is great. One of the best new finds so far.
9/10
Amy Winehouse
3/5
She's a good singer and I enjoyed it but not really my style.
7/10
LL Cool J
2/5
Man this is corny as hell... still had a few bangers though
4/10
The Who
3/5
Congrats to The Who for becoming the first act to get two albums that I've had to listen to. (Unless you count Paul Simon, who I've had a solo and Simon & Garfunkel album). Anyways, this was a lot better than Tommy, since it wasn't a cheesy rock album. I loved the tongue-in-cheek consumerism but it was an unmemorable album overall.
6/10
Spiritualized
2/5
This type of shit either really hits or it really don't. Today it didn't
4/10
The Black Keys
5/5
I know it's kinda cool to hate on the Black Keys now and I get it... yes, they sold out... yes they are a knockoff White Stripes... yes they do make blues music for people afraid of black people but fuck it. It is an important album to me. My very first concert was Black Keys, and this album helped to really get me into music in general.
10/10 though admittedly biased.
Napalm Death
1/5
Fuck man. As I write this I'm teetering between a 1-2 star (or a 2/10 or a 3/10 if you will). It's funny that I love punk music but never could get into metal and this album explains why. Many of the songs sound the exact same, and the vocalists ( I know there were more than one here) are awful. The same goddamn pitch, and I don't think I understood a single word said the entire time. It's not void of musical importance and everyone and a while the drums would come through with something interesting but then that goddamn voice would come back and I'd want to stab my eardrums out.
You know what? 2/10 saved only by some cool song names and the fact that they kept most of the songs (and album) short, even if this was some of the longest 33 minutes of my life.
Gram Parsons
4/5
I've gotten way into country music over the past few years, and one of my big hopes was that I would learn a lot about some older country to check out. Mission accomplished here.
8/10
The Doors
3/5
Hookworms
4/5
The actual album was good. Finding out about the band was not.
7/10
Stephen Stills
3/5
IDK it was fine.
6/10
Nine Inch Nails
3/5
It was decent, feel like if I super paid attention to it or listened to it a few more times it would really click. Industrial isn't really my thing all the way.
6/10
5/5
I mean it's the most revered and beloved album by the most revered and beloved band in history. I don't really have to say much, do I?
10/10
The Flaming Lips
5/5
Love this album. I don't consider myself to be some major Flaming Lips fan but damn if I don't find myself coming back to this album probably about once a year a loving it every time. 9/10
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Would have been great in the mood but currently I am most definitely not.
7/10 based out of mood for normal day. 3/10 today. Sorry Stevie, I'll give it another shot when I'm in a better mental state.
Queen
3/5
I mean it's Queen. Although it's interesting because like, none of the hits are here. I actually don't think I've ever heard a Queen album front to back before, outside of their live at Wembley album because for a band so beloved like them, they don't really have like that album. Anyways there are a few tracks here that are very Queen-ish and a couple where you can tell the band is still figuring out who they are.
7/10
Siouxsie And The Banshees
5/5
Hell yeah Siouxsie Sioux is awesome. Need to listen to more of her.
9/10
Common
2/5
I guess I'm just not a huge Common fan. Oh well.
4/10
Isaac Hayes
5/5
Hell yeah. I knew my funk/soul was way behind when I started this project and doing this helped me to expand this.
9/10
The Smashing Pumpkins
3/5
I mean it's fine. Has a bunch of good songs but why is it almost 2 hours long?!?!?!? Billy Corgan this is unnecessary
6/10
The Last Shadow Puppets
3/5
So this was just bad Arctic Monkeys which at first I was excited about but after like 3 songs got old. Still, bad Arctic Monkeys isn't terrible.
5/10
Butthole Surfers
2/5
Bleh
Wu-Tang Clan
5/5
There are two types of people in the world. People who like Wu-Tang and people without taste.
After all, they are for children.
Seriously though this is top 5 hip hop of all time (I think this is the third time I've said this and I'm like 100 albums into this project so... maybe I have more than 5 favorites?)
10/10
Throbbing Gristle
1/5
It's fucking Christmas and instead of hanging out with my family, I'm listening to this shit. There are a few songs where I understand the artistic appeal but for the most part, this seemed to just be sound.
1/10
Various Artists
1/5
I hate Christmas music. I know I'm a grinch.
2/10
Pentangle
2/5
Really weird and not my style. Also why is the same song on there 3 times?
3/10
Nina Simone
5/5
I came to the realization recently that Sinnerman is my favorite song of all time. This isn't on this album or anything but it should speak to the power of Nina
10/10
Dagmar Krause
1/5
This is like the closest to the Shaggs I've ever heard from a "real" musician.
1/10
Tom Waits
2/5
I recognized the first song off this album from somewhere and I didn't know where. Then it hit me, it was on the soundtrack for the cinematic classic Robots (2005). Man, what an awesome film that was. Weird choice to put a Tom Waits song on it. Was he involved? Didn't he voice someone? No? Wait a minute holy shit this voice cast is stacked! Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, Amanda Bynes, Mel Brooks (!) Stanley Tucci, Paul Giamatti, Jennifer Coolidge, Natasha Lyonne, Jay Leno (!?) James Earl Jones (!?) Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson (!?) James Brown (!?) not to mention Robin Williams of course. I can't believe they had a character who's main characteristic was that her ass was fat. Also Can we talk about the communist messages that the film had? Holy based! Not to mention...
Oh yeah the album? I was too busy thinking about how good Robots (2005) for the rest of it. Seemed weird and not my style.
3/10
CHIC
4/5
It was decent. I enjoyed it and it had some jams but IDK if i's ever listen to it in full again
7/10
Count Basie & His Orchestra
2/5
Not really a big band/ orchestra person. But it's not bad for that. Also has a killer name/ album cover for a record released in the 50s
4/10
MC Solaar
4/5
Nice and groovy, I hope the lyrics are cool because it's all in French. But the flow was cool
8/10
Sonic Youth
4/5
One of the most influential Alt-rock albums ever. Might go on a little long but you can't argue with it.
8/10
Arcade Fire
5/5
I like Arcade Fire. I know they can be a controversial band, and recent allegations against Win Butler are disgusting but the music is good. "Wake Up" is one of my favorite songs of all time and this album is excellent in a similar sense. AF is able to create a feeling of melancholic nostalgia that is quite unique in its sound and puts you in such a specific time and setting. For this album, it's the highs, lows, and mundane of living and growing up in the suburbs and reflecting back on that time period, and telling you that story. Arcade Fire is not always a hit but they are here.
9/10
Supergrass
5/5
Wow. I honestly had never heard of Supergrass before this project and they come out here and give me not one but two banger projects? Really need to listen to this band more and do a deep dive.
9/10
Def Leppard
2/5
Cliche and corny 80's hair band. Not my style, even if it had a few good songs.
4/10
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Best of the Rolling Stones so far but while I enjoyed it I still wouldn't say I'm a Stones fan still.
7/10
Erykah Badu
2/5
Good Instrumental, bad vocals. Didn't really grab me
4/10
Michael Jackson
4/5
Banger after Banger, what else do you expect from the king of Pop? Got a little slow for my taste in the second half but either way.
8/10
Garbage
3/5
Don't have anything to really say here. Just an overall solid if a bit unmemorable album.
6/10
Led Zeppelin
5/5
FInnaly. The GOATS have made the list.
10/10
The Birthday Party
2/5
Another album on the bottom 20 list. It's funny, I've barley cracked 100 albums here and yet this is like the 5th or 6th bottom 20 album already. I knew what to expect and came in with low expectations but while I didn't exactly enjoy this album, it was far better than the other bottom albums I've heard so far.
3/10
Deee-Lite
2/5
Not bad... just super corny and dated
4/10
Iron Maiden
3/5
The Replacements
3/5
Solid post-punk
7/10
Tim Buckley
2/5
I'm uncomfortable right now
3/10. Sounds all right then the lyrics hit.
Koffi Olomide
2/5
Mostly boring and whatever. Also dude is a creeeeeeep
3/10
Pulp
3/5
Should be my style but something didn't quite click
6/10
Burning Spear
4/5
Solid Regge. Don't have much more to say.
7/10
David Bowie
3/5
I think Bowie is officially in the Queen tier of their singles being really good but for the most part I don't care for their albums
6/10
Ramones
5/5
"It's just the same song 14 times in a row!"
Yeah and? The song is kick fucking ass and probably the blueprint of punk music going forward.
10/10
Sonic Youth
3/5
Alright project. Gets a bit messy, especially in the second half of the album but a decent time, especially during a strong start.
6/10
The Charlatans
2/5
Generic Brit-Pop. The only interesting thing about it is that their guitarist got drunk af and killed himself.
4/10
Linkin Park
1/5
1/10
The Smiths
3/5
Alright songs. Fuck Morrissey with a rusty screwdriver.
6/10 album
1/10 dude
The White Stripes
5/5
Is this my favorite White Stripes album? No. Are The White Stripes my favorite band? Yes. Do they instantly get 5 stars on all albums that pop up here (which is 3 btw, WBC and Elephant are assumed but GBMS? Really?) also yes.
10/10
Queens of the Stone Age
4/5
Never really considerd this one of the better QOTSA albums which is why I found it interesting that this was here. Either way I'm not going to complain (as long as Like Clockwork and Songs For the Deaf are also here)
8/10
Radiohead
3/5
This might be sacrilege to some, but I don't really understand the Radiohead hype. Even when I was in high school, which is supposed to be peak whiny, annoying, angst time, or the time you should most like Radiohead, I've just never loved them. They're good don't get me wrong but time and time again I see people rate them as one of if not the greatest bands of all time and it just never clicked for me. This is probably the 5th of 6th time listening to this album so it's not like I don't give them a fair shake. Whatever.
6/10
The Specials
3/5
This was a ska album. Ska is good for a bit but quickly becomes annoying after about 20 minutes when you get over it. Because of that, I enjoyed the first half of this album and then didn't enjoy the second half that much.
6/10
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
4/5
Interesting, unique, good and something I would have never of heard of without this project. The exact reason why I wanted to do it in the first place.
8/10
The Temptations
4/5
Solid tracks, especially in the first half. Not much else to say.
7/10
Cat Stevens
3/5
Had some decent songs here.
6/10
Ryan Adams
3/5
I actually saw Ryan Adams at a festival in 2017, before the allegations. He was drunk I think. There was a tall apartment complex behind the venue and Adams multiple times insisted that there was someone on the roof of the building and would not play until they waved back to him. This continued for multiple minutes before he gave up and went on to play the set. So yeah I always guessed he was kinda an asshole.
Anyways, this album was clearly inspired by Dylan, without the songwriting. Not bad but it ain't going to blow anyone away either.
6/10
Genesis
2/5
Way too forgettable to be that long. It wasn't bad but I couldn't tell you anything about it afterwards. And it was long.
3/10
The Cure
4/5
People will really listen to this and say that The Smiths were better? This is the perfect bridge between something like Joy Division and later grunge.
8/10
LTJ Bukem
1/5
Boring and stupid. At best it's OK background music. At best.
1/10
Public Enemy
4/5
The most important rap group in history right here. Scary how even more poignant their points are 30+ years later.
8/10
Queen
4/5
Pretty decent, other than that one song near the end that kept going on forever
8/10
Beatles
3/5
I mean it's early Beatles. Good pop with solid songwriting but nothing compared to what they would become in a few years.
7/10
Kate Bush
3/5
Couple decent songs, but it seems to have aged quite a bit
6/10
Liz Phair
2/5
Didn't really get anything out of this. Expected different for some reason but it felt like generic 90's singer-songwriting pop crap.
3/10
Foo Fighters
5/5
There is something so special about this album compared to the rest of the Foo's discography. Once Dave got an actual band with him I think it lost a lot of the charm. There are still a lot of great songs and albums (hell musically I think that The Color and the Shape is probably their "best" and I'm surprised that isn't on this list) but this project is different and special.
It comes down to me to the context surrounding it. Knowing that this is all just one guy doing everything as a way to cope with the suicide of a close friend and band mate, probably thinking that the biggest and best thing he probably would ever be apart of was over, adds an extra layer here.
10/10. Foo's were very important to me back in high school and while I overlooked this one at the time as "the one before the rest of the band got there" looking back at it; it just might be there best.
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
Ian Dury
2/5
British (derogatory)
3/10
Michael Kiwanuka
4/5
Suprised by the sound here I was impressed. I think the local alt radio used to play a few of these but damn it just hit.
8/10
Bob Dylan
5/5
One of the best from Bob. This is his early stuff at it's best. I might even say this is his best album period but I know most people would disagree with me on that.
9/10
Method Man
3/5
Solid Hip Hop but it's nothing compared to the full power of the Wu-Tang altogether, as you can guess seeing as he is trying to create that style so much.
6/10
Nirvana
5/5
The best Nirvana album. Nevermind gets all the praise since it had the hits but as far as musical ability goes this far exceeds it.
10/10
Radiohead
3/5
Said it on the last Radiohead album and I'll say it here; they are fine but why people treat them like the second coming of Christ is beyond me.
6/10
Steve Winwood
2/5
This was so 80's cheese that I was waiting for an episode of Family Ties to start playing.
3/10. Could be fun in the right mood.
Van Morrison
2/5
So like it's just a super long Live Van Morrison album? Lame
3/10
The Mothers Of Invention
2/5
Just because it was influential doesn't mean it was good. Maybe if I was on drugs. A lot of drugs.
3/10
Nick Drake
3/5
Always nice to hear a good singer/songwriting album
7/10
Röyksopp
2/5
Boring electro crap
3/10
Stevie Wonder
3/5
Kinda mediocre for Stevie, but that's still really good.
7/10
Beatles
5/5
There really is something so special about the Beatles. You don't realize it until you do a project like this just how amazing and consistent their sound is.
9/10
The Libertines
5/5
OK, OK I admit it... I'm a sucker for mid 2000's garage/post punk rock revival. Like so much so. Sue me.
9/10
Pavement
3/5
I think I like the idea of this better than the actual album
6/10
Orbital
1/5
Oh look, another electro album that is boring and puts me to sleep. That's like 3 this week. When will it end? I've had like 1 jazz album can we please put something new on here?
2/10
B.B. King
4/5
Solid crowd, and a legend at the top of his game. King is the correct name for him here.
8/10
Radiohead
3/5
Look this is my 3rd Radiohead album in as many weeks. I have made my feelings on them perfectly clear at this point. I don't have the ability/ desire to talk about this band again.
7/10
Everything But The Girl
1/5
This sounds like the most generic coffee shop music of all time.
2/10
Metallica
4/5
Not the best Metallica but still overall solid, even if it goes a bit long at points.
8/10
Le Tigre
4/5
A great twist on riot grrrl. (also while we are here they asked, and Cassavetes is a genius).
8/10
Traffic
2/5
I was really hoping for something more bluesy/country based on the title/cover. It had a few elements of it that were the best part of the album IMO. The rest of it kinda fell apart and just faded into the background.
3/10
Slipknot
1/10
Earth, Wind & Fire
3/5
Metallica
3/5
Ride The Lightning > Master of Puppets > Black Album
7/10
The Mamas & The Papas
4/5
They have such a unique style. I wish we had more acts nowadays like them.
7/10
Marvin Gaye
5/5
Stone Cold Classic. Nothing else to say.
10/10
Moby Grape
3/5
The album was fine, but reading the band's Wikipedia was much more interesting. If it was just based on that, I'd give it a perfect score.
6/10
Bob Dylan
4/5
This is interesting because it's Dylan's transition album. Everyone talks about it but you can almost hear it in real time here. Fascinating.
8/10
Killing Joke
2/5
I found most of the album to be corny tbh
4/10
Muddy Waters
4/5
A soul legend doing his thing. Hell yeah.
8/10
Radiohead
4/5
Well, it took four albums in under two months, but I finally found a Radiohead album that I liked more than just "it's Good!" Maybe it's because this one is a lot more generic and less experimental. Maybe, I just need things like guitar hooks and melody to enjoy albums.
7/10
The Byrds
4/5
Some Good ol' fashioned country music. You're a nerd and can't get over your country music bias if you don't like it.
8/10 loved the Gram Parsons stuff
King Crimson
4/5
The funny haha yelling guy album. 21st Century Schizoid is a classic and there are some good songs throughout.
7/10
The Coral
2/5
If this had popped up on a playlist on Spotify or found in the bargain bin at the local record store I might have liked it. I do like my early 2000's rock, but on a list like this it was just unnecessary and janky.
3/10
Bee Gees
1/5
I don't like disco but when I saw that I got the Bee Gees I thought at least it's the best of disco. Instead I got shitty rock. Boo.
2/10
Meat Loaf
1/5
Rock Operas are already a tough sell for me but it's worse when they are annoying and repetitive like this.
2/10
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Been in a rough patch this week as far as this project goes. What a way to get out of it. Maybe a bit long but it's warranted.
9/10
Prince
4/5
Really solid album. I've never seen the Purple Rain movie and there were a few times when it seemed like the songs would be better for that but for the most part this is a great album
8/10
Roxy Music
3/5
Jethro Tull
2/5
Thought this wouldn't really be my thing. For the most part I was right but it has a few moments here and there.
4/10
Joni Mitchell
2/5
So this list hates jazz, right? Cause every jazz-ish record I've gotten so far is this soft, wallpaper, inoffensive coffee shop jazz and not the cool innovative type. This was boring af.
3/10
David Bowie
3/5
The first half is a better then average Bowie album. The second half is just wtf.
5/10
2/5
Why is this here? I tend to enjoy Dylan but this list has way too much live shit on it. The first half is far from his best performance. I much prefer an actual album to be made on the list over this. If a live album must be included, at least make it look significant, not this.
3/10 only because it's still Dylan, so I still like the music.
Tracy Chapman
4/5
Wow, what a great record. Outside of Fast Car, I don't think I had heard any of these songs before, but this is definitely going in the rotation.
8/10
Joy Division
5/5
What an amazing album. Sonically and thematically immaculate and ahead of its time.
10/10
The Stooges
5/5
The can never make me hate the Stooges (minus the Iggy Pop accusations.)
9/10
Elvis Presley
2/5
Elvis was never that talented, but at least early Elvis was interesting to listen to. This is just boring grandma music.
3/10
Marvin Gaye
4/5
Even is second tier work is still great
7/10
The Black Crowes
3/5
Good bar music. Still bar music.
6/10
The Kinks
3/5
I mean its better than most from the Britpop explosion but like... there can't be that many more now, can there (yes, yes there can be)
7/10
The Smiths
3/5
Another solid album from a shit person. Still don't know how people think this is better than the Cure.
6/10
The Velvet Underground
3/5
I mean It's definitely good but my god was it sometimes hard to listen to.
6/10
The Magnetic Fields
1/5
Is this a sick practical joke? Who is this made for? I can't imagine the type of person that sits and listens to this. I think this is almost experimental in a way that it's art is actually the subject? Or perhaps it's just a torture method? Who knows. I have no qualms with long art like this (Hell just last week I watched Satantango, a 7 1/2 hour Hungarian film) but it need to have a purpose, or at least not be a boring slog like this.
2/10 every once in a while an ok song would come along, only to be drowned out by 10 bad ones.
Patti Smith
5/5
Now this is true punk rock. If don't agree then you are wrong. Sorry I don't make the rules.
9/10
2/5
Not to judge a book by it's cover (or in this case, an album) but the moment I saw the name/cover for this album I knew what the score was going to be. I was right.
4/10
The Thrills
3/5
I know it's not for everyone but I love the 2000's indie sound so much that I enjoyed this.
7/10
John Lennon
3/5
A lot more raw and real then what I remember, probably the most "punk" you are going to get from a Beatle.
7/10
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
I mean you can't go wrong with S&G but it didn't really have a lot on the bone
6/10
Happy Mondays
1/5
When I tell people I don't really like 80's music... This is what I mean.
2/10
George Harrison
4/5
The best of the Beatles solo albums. Could be better than most of the groups albums in general if it was a bit trimmed down. Perfect for a Sunday morning, just avoid the final 1/4th.
8/10
Bob Dylan
3/5
Look, I like Bob but this is his most overrated album.
6/10
Ali Farka Touré
2/5
I'll be honest it was in one ear and right out the other. I don't remember anything from it and I listened to it less than 24 hours ago
4/10
The Go-Betweens
2/5
hawk me-me-me-me-me
hawk me-me-me-me-me
(that's me sleeping through this boring album)
3/10
The Allman Brothers Band
3/5
Not usually a jam band fan but you what? This wasn't bad! Easy to just put on in the background while doing work. Still though, is it really one of the best 1000 albums of all time?
6/10
The Stooges
5/5
Most accurate album name ever?
9/10 Stooges never miss
The Afghan Whigs
3/5
It's fine? Like it's all grungy or whatever. The 90's are to Gen X as the 60's are to the boomers.
6/10
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4/5
When it was good, damn was it good. When it wasn't, damn was it average
7/10
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
Never really felt Springsteen. IDK something about him has never really connected with me. Maybe I live too far away from New Jersey or something.
4/10
Brian Eno
2/5
Me before this album: oh Brian Eno, this will be weird
Me for the first half of this album: actually, this isn't that weird!
Me for the second half of this album: oh actually this is weird
4/10
Blur
3/5
I mean, If you are going to over stuff this list with Britpop, you may as well add the best.
7/10
Green Day
4/5
It shouldn't work. Over the top, cheesy and politics that nowadays feels dated (Bush era protest just feels so funny when I look at the world around me rn).
That being said it kinda does work. The tunes are undeniably catchy and it's enjoyable in a sophmoric, high school coded possibly nostalgia biased way.
8/10
Red Hot Chili Peppers
3/5
I might now have aged the best but the singles still bang. Far from the best RHCP though
7/10
XTC
2/5
What if it was cheesy 80's music but also on some drugs
3/10
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
It's Fine? There are a billion of these 80's British post punk albums on the list. I like the genre but it's way over represented on this list.
6/10
Sufjan Stevens
3/5
I always liked not loved Sufjan. He can be too much indie pop, over the top leading to nothing for me but he has some great songs. That being said, Carrie and Lowell is a masterpiece. It's a go to depression album to me and I hope it made this list.
7/10
Miles Davis
5/5
I've been critical before of this list choice of jazz. Not here. It's hard to be critical if Miles freakin Davis.
9/10
The Stone Roses
3/5
I little... soft? for me IDK a type of music I like but not really clicking here. Still not terrible.
6/10
Dizzee Rascal
2/5
I could find myself liking this if I was in the right mood. A lot like Death Grips but less interesting.
4/10
Willie Nelson
4/5
While I obviously knew that Willie had made music I always saw him as someone like Snoop Dogg; obviously a legendary figure in their genre but the music has become secondary to the fame and they play an exaggerated version of themselves. Still as someone who has always wanted to get into more of the country classics like this I was excited. Especially at the idea of a concept album. Unfortunately, it was a bit flat and a bit too short but overall not bad.
7/10
Primal Scream
1/5
This felt like background music to a video you'd find on Youtube while tripping or something.
2/10
Beastie Boys
4/5
Kinda surprised this is here. Don't get me wrong I love me some Beastie Boys but without knowing for sure I assume that if this is here Paul's Boutique and License to Ill most be here as well.
Either way what a record. Sure you get plenty of that rap/rock fusion you typically associate with the Beastie Boys, but you also get a lot of jazz sounding influence as well. Incredible.
8/10
Jimmy Smith
3/5
Not what I expected from a 60's album called Back At The Chicken Shack. Still wasn't bad.
6/10
Black Flag
5/5
Yeah, there is a reason as to why this is like one of THE albums in the hardcore scene. Like yeah it can come off as sophomoric at times but it took punk music to the next level. I actually just read a book that had a section in it about Black Flag and one of the things that stood out was how much Henry Rollins just changed everything the moment he joined the band and how he almost singlehandedly pushed punk to it's extreme.
9/10
Talvin Singh
2/5
I appreciate trying to do something different with it but at the end of the day it was still stale and shitty electronic music.
3/10
Beastie Boys
5/5
Second Beastie Boys this week! Anyways, as a young and dumb high schooler, I never understood why people always said this was their best album. Some of the songs were weird and short and not as fun as License to Ill. Looking back the sampling and creativity is another another level. Obviously it's their best album (jus maybe not the most fun to listen to)
9/10
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
I don't know how to feel about it. Obviously it's good. It wouldn't be the highest rated album here if it wasn't. That beings said there is something that just doesn't quite connect with me the same way it does with everyone else.
8/10 feels too low but 9/10 feels too high. I'm giving it 5 stars though because a re-listen will bump it up probably (it usually does with me)
Afrika Bambaataa
3/5
I think a bit more interesting and influential than it is "good". Out of all pre NWA era rap I've heard this was maybe the most raw and confrontational. But at the end of the day I'm a sucker for this old school rap. Something about the basics of it. What can I say. Maybe it's why I like punk music so much.
6/10
The Young Rascals
3/5
I mean it was fine but I'm sure there are hundreds of records that could have taken it's place and literally no one would have noticed. We already have the Beatles at home type energy.
6/10
Fela Kuti
5/5
Hell yes! Second time getting a Fela Kuti album and second time I'm giving him 5 stars. Never heard of him before this but he's been nothing short of amazing so far. The drumming here in particual was great.
9/10
Eagles
3/5
*Insert Big Lebowski quote here*
6/10
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
2/5
It was weird. I think getting so many experimental ground breaking albums in such a short time is taking it's toll on me.
4/10
The Yardbirds
4/5
I mean it was weird and trippy but the type of weird and trippy I like. IDK maybe Jeff Beck's guitar is just too good to deny.
7/1p
The xx
2/5
Oh yeah, these guys. I remember when they were big. Never really got into them and now I definitely know why. Because they're boring af.
3/10
Eminem
3/5
This is such a weird album because there are some genuinely amazing and artistic songs on here like Stan, I love Amityville, and while I can't say I "like" Kim, it's an effective song no doubt. But also a lot of the album is just Eminem saying he doesn't give a fuck about what anyone says about him. Which is why he dedicated like 10 songs to it. Like this is a long album, I don't know how many times I need to listen to him say it.
It's fine overall? Probably his best album in total even if there is a lot of fat to trim. Like all old Slim it aged like milk but that's what you've come to expect with him.
7/10
Stereo MC's
3/5
A fun listen, at least for the first half, that gets a bit old after awhile. Definitely didn't need to be on this list.
5/10
Prince
4/5
Good solid Prince without the exact amazingness that makes it untouchable like Purple Rain
8/10
Giant Sand
2/5
I feel like if I gave this one another listen I could really get into it, but unfortunately for it I will not be doing that. At least not right now.
4/10
Gotan Project
3/5
To be clear, this is very much not my thing. That being said it was good! Not great, and I doubt I'll listen to it again but it was a cool song with a great fusion. Glad it made the list.
6/10
Soundgarden
4/5
Steely Dan
4/5
After listening to Aja a few months back I thought this would be a bit more jazzy, instead I got a more Southern Rock sound I expected from them originally and they still knocked it out of the park.
8/10
System Of A Down
1/5
I know these guys are like the "good" Nu-Metal band or whatever but at the end of the day, they are just Nu-Metal. Even if they are for hipsters and not people who punch drywall in their basements while getting a caffeine high on Rockstars.
1/10
The Police
2/5
Mostly ok with a hinge of the worst thing you've ever heard. I still don't know exactly how you're supposed to feel listening to them but I don't think it's what they wish it was.
4/10
The Cars
4/5
C'mon. Classic after classic, easy to listen to, would go hard on a boat for sure. This is the type of classic rock you don't mind when it comes up.
8/10
Morrissey
1/5
This is just a guy desperately trying to keep up with the new kids. That guy is also a giant dick.
2/10
Aerosmith
3/5
Growing I thought Aerosmith was a way bigger deal than they are because they somehow got their own Guitar Hero game. 3 stone cold classics here and a bunch of mid. Fuck Steven Tyler.
6/10
Dwight Yoakam
4/5
I liked it. Good mix of modern and old country music. I know there is a lot of negativity about this album. Some of it is because people immediately dismiss all country music, which I find ridiculous. While there are certain genres that I tend not to like as much as others to completely throw away one entirely is ridiculous, especially something as broad as Country music. Is the vast majority of modern county music pumped out my Nashville bad? Yes but honestly I would say the same thing about modern mainstream rock. But look at the past and on the edges in both genres and there is still some great stuff to find.
I also see a-lot about the subject matter of this album. I get that half an album of buildup to a man murdering his cheating wife isn't everyone's cup of tea and would be disturbing to some but I see it as a concept album and a character, not Yoakam being the one to do these actions. Also murder ballads are a big thing in country, from it's early days even to more modern acts like Colter Wall. Honestly if there is a song where the subject matter gives me the ick it's "I Sang Dixie" because any mention of the Confederacy is gross, even if that's not the point of the song.
Overall while I wouldn't say this is the best country album of all time I overall enjoyed it.
8/10
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
ATCQ is an act that I've alway kinda walked around the edges with. Never really going as deep with them as I should. A bit repetitve but fun and a lot of good jams here.
7/10
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Another record full of bangers from Stevie. Who knew?
9/10
The Sonics
5/5
Man this goes hard af even today. The Sonics are essentially the godfathers of garage rock and while I wish there was less covers on this, but the energy in infectious. These guys just had something that everyone else at the time just didn't.
9/10
Public Enemy
5/5
One of the best, and most important, hip hop records of all time
9/10
Brian Eno
1/5
Well... He didn't lie about the album cover that's for sure.
2/10
Brian Wilson
3/5
For the first time in 250 albums I feel like I can't give an album a proper rating. At first I questioned why an album from a washed up star 50 years ago was on here but I looked into the history of the album. I feel like the context is important here and not the music (for the most part). While I do like some of the more popular Beach Boys songs I wouldn't really call myself a fan. (That being said, I saw them last year at a festival and the blew the metaphorical roof off the place. 45 minutes of straight bangers)
5/10 I guess because I don't really have a good score for this. Will definitely change on a re-listen.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
5/5
Fuck it. 5 stars. Will I ever listen to it again? Probably not. Did I think it was good musically? As someone who isn't trained no but I know there was stuff there. Did I laugh my ass off? Yes. I had fun and got a lot of enjoyment out of this record, and at the end of the day, isn't that kinda the point of music? To, y'know... enjoy it?
9/10
The Beach Boys
4/5
I know it's iconic and everything but honestly it's hard for me to understand why. Still, not bad though.
7/10
Cornershop
2/5
This was the same old boring britpop this list loves but with a different wrapper on top
4/10
Steve Earle
2/5
This would be cool on a boat maybe. Currently I'm in a cold dark office and not a boat so....
4/10
Jorge Ben Jor
5/5
What a fun album this was. The type of shit I wanted to do this project for. Fun, exciting, important history, and something I never would have listened to. More of this and less boring ass brit pop and 12 records from the same American groups please.
9/10
Elliott Smith
2/5
Interesting. This is sad white boy indie music that should be right in my wheelhouse but it just didn't click with me. I even listened to this twice just to make sure and I feel like I'm missing something. I might give this a few more listens just to see.
4/10
Lauryn Hill
4/5
Mostly good. A lot of stuff that could be cut, like the last 30 seconds of each song, and maybe a song or two as well.
7/10
The Beach Boys
4/5
RIP to Brian Wilson. Amazing album here. Just unbelievable experimentation and a change of sound that was great. Also Student Demonstration Time is a jam idc what people say.
8/10
John Coltrane
4/5
A super iconic and monumental Jazz album. While I have found myself enjoying a lot of jazz on this list, I don't consider myself a super jazz fan. More a genre I have appreciated from afar. While I did enjoy this, not as much as say a Miles Davis album.
7/10
Neil Young
2/5
One of those albums that musically is very interesting and has a lot of history but it just didn't really connect with me for the most part. Still had a few good songs. I know Neil Young has some better songs in there, so we'll see.
4/10
Kraftwerk
2/5
There was some decent stuff in here, and I really liked the third track. The issue? The 23 minute opening that is boring as shit, and took forever to get through.
3/10
Tears For Fears
4/5
I don't say this often but some near perfect pop songs on here. I tend not to like some of these cheesy 80 songs but you can't deny "Shout" and "Head Over Heals" and I get this weird nostalgia for "Everybody Want To Rule The World". Rest of the album is meh.
8/10
Missy Elliott
4/5
Super disheartening to see the two biggest reviews of this album giving this the one and giving be a yucky feeling about it. Not my favorite album or artist but come on guys, be better.
7/10. Bumping it up a point.
Anthrax
3/5
It was fine? A lot more chanting then I expected. I really can't tell the difference between "good" and "bad" versions of these old metal albums.
6/10
a-ha
2/5
This album starts with an undeniable 10/10 banger of a classic.
The rest? Forgettable meh 80's pop.
4/10
The White Stripes
5/5
Sometimes you get a bunch of mediocre shit. And Sometimes you get your favorite album by your favorite band ever, and this time it was the latter. I love love love this album. It's not perfect (mostly it's last track. It's kinda weird especially with the context of Jack and Meg being exes at the point) but most of it is impeccable. From it's iconic thundering opening of Seven Nation Army, to the face melting of Ball and a Biscuit. (find a live recording of this if you can btw) the rest of this album is perfection. It miiiight just be my favorite album of all time.
10/10
George Michael
2/5
This guy really thought he was something didn't he?
3/10
Pretenders
4/5
I always felt like these guys got overlooked. Solid, inconstant stuff from them.
7/10
Dusty Springfield
3/5
What a voice. Not much super grabbed me but an enjoyable record no doubt.
6/10
The Incredible String Band
1/5
I could handle the sitar. I could not handle the singing. Jesus Christ himself could not handle the singing.
2/10
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
First things first, R.I.P to Sly who passed just a few weeks ago. This was a lot more melodic and darker than I thought coming in, especially as it went on.
7/10
Slayer
2/5
Nothing to really hook me here. I need a bit more melody or riffs or something in my metal.
4/10
Neil Young
4/5
Really solid album. Had a couple tracks that I didn't really feel but when it hit damn did it hit hard
8/10
Kings of Leon
4/5
Kings of Leon are a weird band.
Fun fact, my first ever concert was a Kings of Leon/ Black Keys co-headliner tour that my dad took me too. Anyways, Kings of Leon is a band where I never complain if one of their songs comes on shuffle but this is the first time I've ever listened to a full album from them. It was a good listen but I don't think I'll ever go out of my way to listen to it again.
7/10
The Slits
3/5
Don't have a ton to say about this one. Influential as hell but its more of just a fine album to listen to. Deserves to be on the list though.
6/10
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Good but I don't remember a thing about it.
6/10
Jack White
5/5
Look, I'm a unabashed Jack White fanboy. He's my favorite musician ever. I have every album of his, seen him in concert, watched documentaries, own shirts, etc.
That being said is this really an album you must hear before you die? One of the best 1,000 or so albums of all time? This is probably his 3rd best solo album.
Whatever it's still getting 5 starts from me no matter what. Just gonna shut up and take the W when I get one.
10/10
Pere Ubu
1/5
Yeah this was waaaaay to over the top for me, and annoying at parts
2/10
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
It's always hard to rate an album like this that's steeped in so much context and meaning that the actual music is almost secondary. Especially when it's as heavy as this. This album is less an album and more of a therapy session for Nick Cave following the death of his son. While personally I didn't find it to be something I would come back to (this is very much not my thing musically) I feel grateful this exists, even more so than usual for albums on here I don't particularly like. That being said it almost really feel intrusive for me to listen to and straight up wrong for me to rate.
Because I have to I'll give it a 4/10 but that's trying to strip the context and the meaning of this album away from it which spits in the face of the whole point of art, I know. But a score must be put and for something like this, I guess that's what I'm going to put.
Nick Drake
4/5
Smooth and fun, quick and breezy little listen like the previous Nick Drake album I've gotten.
7/10
TLC
3/5
90's R&B is not my thing at all. That being said this is still an enjoyable album, especially the first half. Get's a bit repetitive in the second but still.
6/10
Blue Cheer
3/5
While undoubtedly a very important and monumental Psychedelia/ Heavy rock record, it really just doesn't have the same punch now as it probably did almost 60 years ago.
6/10
Paul McCartney and Wings
4/5
Another reason why Paul is really the best Beatle, and always has been.
8/10
Van Halen
2/5
Van Halen can fucking play but outside of the hits, I didn't get a lot out of this. 80's hair metal isn't really my thing anyways.
4/10
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
1/5
I don't know this guy but I can already tell he's the most insufferable person in the world.
2/10
Dire Straits
3/5
Dire Straits somehow walk the line between boring and nice to listen to. Guess it just depends on the day for me. Today though, I enjoyed this, even if some of their songs felt quite a bit long.
6/10
Bob Dylan
4/5
Oh Bob, how I feel some way about ye'
I'm much more of an early Dylan fan. This album is kinda the turning point before it gets a little to rockish and not enough folk for me. Some of those bad tendencies are starting but still an overall great album.
8/10
Pantera
2/5
It was fine? Not a metalhead but there were a few songs that were listenable. Could have been a lot worse
4/10
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
4/5
I think it's official. Im a Jazz guy now. This one was a bit basic but you can tell how monumental it must have been at the time and how important it was for the future.
8/10
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Fun and easy to listen to, even if a bit repetitive after awhile
6/10
The Blue Nile
1/5
Generic 80's New Wave that reeeeealy doesn't deserve to be here. Already forget quite literally everything about it's sound.
2/10
Klaxons
4/5
I'm not going to pretend that this is the greatest album of all time but at this point it's clear that I have a bias for 2000's garage rock style.
8/10
Brian Eno
3/5
The nice thing about this is I can just give David Byrne the credit for all the good things and Brian Eno the credit for the bad ones.
5/10
Pixies
5/5
The most important rock album of the last 40 years. Gave Nirvana the blueprint to basically change the sound of music as we'd know it.
10/10
Billy Bragg
3/5
A really meh Wilco album, or an ok Billy Bragg album. You decide.
6/10
Funkadelic
4/5
Really can tell they were going for that dark/ gothic vibe here
7/10
Kanye West
5/5
*The world's largest sigh* Well I can't say I didn't know this one was coming.
Just thinking about rating this album is giving me a headache. Kanye is, and will always be, one of the most important people in the history of hip-hop. From his production to his themes to what he raps about, no one was doing it like him and it completely changed the artistic direction of a whole genre, and honestly popular Western music as a whole.
But yeah you don't need me to be the one to tell you he's a complete piece of shit, on a level few have touched in modern times. He's the ultimate test of separating the art from the artist. Even writing this review right now my mind is split between a 1 star and 5 star review. Fuck.
Talking just music for a second this is my favorite Kanye album. Sure the skits are dated and there are the typical Kanye-isms in the lyrics but as an atheist, goddamn if "Jesus Walks" isn't one of the best songs of all time. Not to mention "Through the Wire", "Spaceship" and "All Falls Down".
Call it a cop out but I'm going to split the middle on this.
10/10 for the music
1/10 for the dude.
5/10
Edit: I've had a few hours to think about it. I also looked ahead since I guessed there would be other Kanye albums on the list, and I was right. Since they didn't put Gradation (the other near perfect album from him) on the list, but put on the overrated MBDTF and meh Yeezus I think I'm going to give this one a good score. Pleanty of people on this list has done terrible, possibly worse things. IDK don't hate me.
9/10
Robert Wyatt
2/5
A few creative flourishes but really weird for the most part
3/10
Black Sabbath
3/5
RIP Ozzie
6/10
Otis Redding
4/5
Got a little boring with all of these songs sounding similar but it's just classic after classic. Hard to dislike these old school funk albums
7/10
Janis Joplin
5/5
Funky, Soulful, and Punk all at the same time. Joplin truly was one of a kind. Great way to mark 300 albums.
9/10
King Crimson
3/5
This album is like midwest weather. If you don't like it, wait 5 minutes and if you do, then not for long.
5/10
James Brown
2/5
This felt meh. I don't love live albums being on here, and this was too quick to really get into. Good at time though
4/10
ABBA
3/5
ABBA gets annoying after a bit but this did have all the hits.
6/10
Van Morrison
1/5
Somehow simultaneously boring and annoying. A few songs that were fun not for the most part.
2/10
Gillian Welch
3/5
Really slow and intricate, I can see why the reviews are polarizing. Some of the tracks were good others bored me but I think I could get there with a few more listens.
6/10
The Bees
3/5
Fun breezy early 2000's alt rock with an interesting soundscape. Hard to dislike but I question if it truly needs to be on here tbh. Still though, not going to complain.
6/10
Deep Purple
2/5
Fine if you're forced to listen to it but I'd never put this on intentionally. Felt mindlessly long and droned on an on. We get it dudes.
4/10
Shivkumar Sharma
3/5
Definitely understand why this is so important and influential, and as far as music like this that's not at all "Western" it's easier for me to digest and understand but probably not something I'll come back to soon.
6/10
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
2/5
This was meh? It really should be my style, a fast paced rock/punk band with tons of energy and guitar should be right up my alley but it just wasn't here. Coming in I knew "Bellbottoms", (thank you Edger Wright) and expected stuff closer to that so perhaps that's why? Maybe it's my mood? idk. Could see myself giving this another listen down the line but for now I didn't connect with it.
3/10
Depeche Mode
3/5
Knew and enjoyed the hits. Was meh on the rest of it but not terrible.
6/10
Devendra Banhart
2/5
A boring, sleepy album that really didn't go anywhere or do anything for me.
3/10
Madonna
2/5
Meh. Generic 80's pop. I recognize she was influential for the times but it hasn't particularly aged well.
4/10
Queen Latifah
3/5
It was fine. Not a lot blew me away but not a lot I hated either. Been a lot of meh for me on this list this last week or so.
5/10
Ray Charles
4/5
So monumental it changed not one but 2 genres. It's like listening to a warm hug. It is a bit long in the tooth though.
8/10
Ride
2/5
I really need multiple listens to get into shoegaze like this. Maybe someday but for now this sounded like weird shit and dragged waaaaay on.
4/10
Bad Company
2/5
Dad rock to the nth degree. At least it was short and had some of it's better songs near the middle/end
4/10
Talking Heads
4/5
Funny how even a meh Talking Heads album like this is still miles better than most peoples best.
8/10
Hüsker Dü
2/5
Solid but I kinda forgot I was even listening to this at points. The most interesting part was when this stopped and Spotify immediately started playing Wire instead.
4/10
M.I.A.
3/5
I don't think I've ever heard anything from her outside "Paper Planes" before this so I was surprised she got 2 album on here. She has an interesting sound but doesn't really do much with/ past it and is a... weirdo about vaccines. Still an interesting sound though
6/10
Raekwon
4/5
This is as close as we're ever going to get to another classic Wu Tang ala 36 Chambers again isn't it?
8/10
Black Sabbath
4/5
Funny how this is the grandfather of metal. Throw some Robert Plant vocals and you could probably convice me this was Led Zeppelin.
7/10
Eric Clapton
2/5
White cokehead anti-vaxxer does Reggae. No way this ends poorly.
3/10
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
This is fine and kinda boring 80's post-punk this list is full of. I enjoyed it but I never really feel anything from it and it has no staying power with me.
6/10
Franz Ferdinand
4/5
I only knew these guys from "Take Me Out" and I figured there was a reason for that. Look this type of indie rock from the 2000's are always going to be my thing, even if this one toes the line, but I'm not going to pretend like this was revolutionary or something.
7/10
Taylor Swift
2/5
I don't care. I just don't care I'm tired of the discourse. I don't like her music but not in some weird incel way but in a it's not for me way. This is boring folk pop, so it doesn't even have the undeniable pop feel the rest of her stuff has. I just don't care.
4/10
Neneh Cherry
3/5
Eh. It was fine. Sounded very dated, but fine.
5/10
Morrissey
2/5
This is the bland 80's meh I don't like AND the dude's a douche.
3/10
Prince
3/5
Kinda one of his less interesting albums and too long but you can't go too wrong with Prince.
6/10
Leonard Cohen
2/5
My fiancee called this "Halloween music" and... kinda yeah.
4/10
David Gray
3/5
I knew Babylon before this and it's far and away the most interesting song here. The rest of it? Ehh
6/10
Sade
4/5
Really good for the most part. A few songs had too much of that 80's cheese but other than that can't complain.
8/10
Beatles
3/5
Such a funny album to be here cause like yes, it's the Beatles so of course it's good and iconic but I don't honestly think that a single person on the planet would say that this is the best Beatles album out there. In fact, it's probably the worst, but it's still the Beatles so...
6/10
Jazmine Sullivan
4/5
Surprised by all the negativity here. Not usually my thing but I kinda dug this, for the most part. Also super short.
7/10
The Rolling Stones
4/5
I don't think I've ever heard early Rollins Stones like this. Kinda digged this more than their bigger stuff.
7/10
Oasis
4/5
Oasis without the hits? I came in negative but it won me over
7/10 a lot of those recently
Jimi Hendrix
5/5
Truly unbelievable man. This shit came out very nearly 60 years ago and still is mind-bending, amazing and gravitational today. Jimi truly was 1/1, especially on that guitar.
10/10
Grizzly Bear
3/5
I mean it's fine, I like me some Indy rock from this era but it's just the reheated nachos of those who came before them.
6/10
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
CCR is so damn consistent. This is the third album from them I've gotten and all three have been great.
8/10
Led Zeppelin
5/5
What to say about this album and band that hasn’t been said 1000X already?
Nothing really. Sometimes you go a bit without listening to them and forget just how amazing they are then when you do it’s just like “oh yeah, maybe they are the greatest of all time for a reason”
10/10
Marilyn Manson
1/5
This would be cool if I was an edgy 14 year old in 1996. But alas, I'm not. I also had my edge dudes I listened to in middle school and then I grew up. Dude's a creep too.
2/10
Sonic Youth
3/5
I like the big time Sonic Youth albums, but this is just kinda there. Doesn't need to be on this list.
6/10
Van Morrison
2/5
Another meh album from this shitbag.
3/10
The Smashing Pumpkins
5/5
Really solid and "Mellon Collie" it doesn't drag on forever and forever.
9/10
Janet Jackson
3/5
Some decent songs but way too many interludes/ filler to love it.
6/10
Sister Sledge
3/5
Disco isn't really my thing but it's fine.
6/10
Lenny Kravitz
2/5
Do you like Prince but want him to be
- More overproduced?
- A Worse Guitar player?
- A Worse Singer?
- A more Cringe Songwriter?
Then boy do I have an album for you
3/10
The Pretty Things
3/5
In a list chalk full of these late 60's dudes taking a shit ton of drugs and groovin out this one did nothing to really stand out from the rest.
5/10
The Clash
5/5
Pure Perfection. The way they fuse different elements of genres without compromising their original punk sound is something that should be taught in schools. Legitimately perhaps the best album on this entire list. There's a reason people rate this as the pinnacle of a genre. And quite frankly, it deserves it. Nothing else to say that hasn't already been said 1000X. Sounds even better on vinyl.
10/10
Yes
3/5
Roundabout is iconic but the rest of this doesn't ever really come close to reaching those heights again.
6/10
Dr. Octagon
2/5
Weird album. I kinda liked some of the beats and flows but a lot of it didn't really work and was stuck in that late 90's/ early 2000's shock humor that has not aged well like at all. Also those porn samples were a choice.
3/10
Santana
4/5
While this falls more into the "on here for influence" rather than how it sounds today I think it's one of the better ones there.
7/10
Elvis Costello
4/5
I don't care what ya'll say I love this little dork.
8/10
James Taylor
3/5
It's fine and whatever. Some good but meh.
6/10.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
This is my 3rd or 4th Neil Young album so I knew what I was getting coming into this. That being said, surprised by how heavy the second half was.
7/10
Billie Holiday
4/5
A classic from a legend. Not much else to say.
8/10
3/5
Solid album. Really loved the two mammouth songs and did't connect as well with the five regular length ones.
6/10
The Verve
2/5
Coming in I only knew these guys from Bittersweet Symphony. Now I know them from that and a mediocre album.
4/10
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Much better than the other Springsteen I've got, but that's probably because this one had all the hits on it. they just kept coming and coming.
8/10
Rage Against The Machine
5/5
God I know it's cliche but the world needs this album now more than it ever did. Be a cynical asshole about it all you want idc but even 30 years later it still gets the blood pumping and the anger rising more than anything anyone else has put in out since. Fuck Trump and fuck fascism now and forever. KITNO is still my go to song before a race for a reason.
10/10 easily
Meat Puppets
5/5
Not for everyone but this is my fucking jam. Great album, and "Lake On Fire" is legit a masterpiece.
9/10
New Order
3/5
Not usually my thing but I liked the 80's synths and didn't groove with the Cure knockoff part, which is the opposite of what I usually feel.
5/10
Germs
3/5
As someone super into Punk music, Germs never really did it for me. Important to get to alot of the other hardcore West coast teams later like Circle Jerks and X but Germs is always kinda meh.
6/10
The Cure
4/5
I called a New Order album the poor mans Cure earlier this week. Here’s the real thing.
8/10
Death In Vegas
1/5
This is 1000% not my thing. Moody boring electronic music just doesn't do anything sorry. Doesn't help that the few times there are vocals it sounds like Bob Dylan, without the writing or the charm to make Dylan work.
2/10
Barry Adamson
1/5
This was... weird. Like I knew the concept and sometimes I could see the vision but then it would go off the rails but I can't pretend like it didn't have an occasional groove to it.
2/10
This also officially marks on year on this project. Can't believe I made it this far tbh. Just about 2 more years left on the main list and then who knows how much more for the user list, but it's currently sitting at another year. Wild.
Jurassic 5
3/5
Fun little album. Not something I expect to come back to or anything but it was a hard one to hate.
6/10
Deerhunter
3/5
This era of Indie Rock is in my wheelhouse so I had a decent time with this but I have a hard time defending an album like this getting on the list, especially one so dreary and moody like this.
6/10
The Pogues
3/5
These Irish punk/folk albums are fun for a while but it overstays it's welcome quite quickly.
6/10
Orange Juice
2/5
Eh, just felt like a poor mans version of Talking Heads. Didn't do anything for me.
4/10
Fats Domino
4/5
I'm not usually one for these old swing album but man is Fats special. Blueberry Hill is a legit top 100 song of all time and the rest of these are just so fun. No one does it like him.
8/10
Nirvana
5/5
Changed the entire genre of Live albums and flipped it on it's fucking head. Iconic.
9/10
Lucinda Williams
4/5
1001 Album Users try not to make fun of Country Challenge: (Impossible)
Fun sound, great lyrics and unbelievable storytelling.
8/10
MGMT
5/5
It took me waaaay to long to get into MGMT. I liked a lot of their contemporaries at the time but something about them never clicked. (Of course perhaps their biggest hit, "Kids" was a song I never really liked). It was only a few years that I finally got these guys. So glad I did.
9/10
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
2/5
Really too dark and empirical for me. This guy has popped up in a few movies (like Wings Of Desire) and he works there but his music is just not for me.
3/10
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
These super old school rap are fun but get repetitive quite quickly
6/10
I wasn't excited for this. U2 is like that older uncle that isn't a bad guy and talking to him for a few minutes is fine but an actual conversation makes you realize that you made a grave grave mistake. There were a few surprises here but meh.
4/10
Creedence Clearwater Revival
4/5
I didn't recognize this CCR album so I was a bit scared but surprise CCR is still good
7/10
5/5
So far whenever I've gotten a Bowie album it's had some hits but been meh. Not here though. Absolutle classic I can see why most people think this is his best.
9/10
Tom Waits
1/5
Just the most annoying crooning over meh instrumental you've ever heard. The dude sounds like he smokes 12 packs a day. I don't mind "bad" vocalists but don't shove in my face how bad it is.
2/10
The Isley Brothers
2/5
Eh, some grovy track but not for me. I was also very confused by the length of this album and how much of It to actually listen to so I apologize if I missed something. Hated Summer Breeze.
4/10
Radiohead
2/5
Look man I think that the "good" Radiohead albums are overrated, you bet I don't care about this crap.
4/10
Pet Shop Boys
2/5
Trying to be too many things at once I think, couldn't really fit into the right vibe ever. I don't know it wants you to dance but not only does it not have the groove, but I kinda didn't want to.
4/10
Robbie Williams
2/5
THE MONKEY GUY IS REAL!?!?!?!?!
3/10
R.E.M.
3/5
REM is so bland to me. Like yes they are important to alt rock history and everything but most of their stuff is just boring and inoffensive that it's hard to have a strong opinion on them one way or the other.
5/10
Emmylou Harris
3/5
Hard to hate. Great voice and nice mellow music. Liked some of the more country songs but not a lot to really grab onto.
6/10
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band
2/5
Had a few moments of fun proto-punk almost but I would get drowned out by a wave of some of the worst music you've ever fucking heard.
3/10, lucky to miss the 1 star range.
Radiohead
3/5
Oh come the fuck on these dude's just aren't that good. Putting OK Computer and Kid A on the list? Fine but the rest of it is just glazing them at this point.
Kinda actually liked the start of this one before it quickly devolved back into meh to me.
6/10
Leonard Cohen
3/5
It was decent. Don't really have a lot to say about it.
6/10
Antony and the Johnsons
4/5
I.... actually kinda enjoyed that! Coming in I expected to be sour on it based on the description and the less than stellar reviews, but I kinda dug it actually, not as bad as most people on here say.
7/10
Tortoise
4/5
I actually really kinda liked this. I usually am quite negative toward these super long post rock songs with no vocals that go on forever but this one had enough to me that I enjoyed it. Good background music in a non derogatory way.
8/10
Herbie Hancock
3/5
Really just ok, didn't really stick with me but I enjoyed listening to.
5/10
2/5
Not without musical importance and definitely had some flourishes. I'm a noob when it comes to jazz but not quite my thing. Definitely more of a miss than a hit. At least it wasn't boring.
3/10
Miriam Makeba
4/5
Fun album! More of this and less 300 albums by the same 50 British artists no one has heard of please!
8/10
Green Day
5/5
Classic after classic, banger after banger. Not a true punk classic but if you're going to do pop-punk, this is how you do it people
9/10 not a ton of variety.
Bruce Springsteen
2/5
Sorry but the Boss is just not for me. Nothing here I really can connect to, even though I do really respect the dude.
4/10
The Roots
2/5
I think I respect the Roots more than I like them. Like they go over my head or something because this didn't grab me like at all, despite the fact that I know how influential and monumental they are.
4/10
The Jam
2/5
Eh. Inoffensive new wave/punk that goes in one ear and right out the other. The exact type of album that could not make the list and no one would care.
4/10
The Zombies
4/5
Usually when I call something a knock off Beatles it's derogatory but here I kinda mean it as a compliment!
7/10
Dexys Midnight Runners
2/5
Come on Eileen is a bop and they really tried here, I got to give them credit.
That being said I did not like what they were trying but they were trying none the less.
4/10
Pere Ubu
2/5
Well I'll give them this it was better then the previous project that showed up here but it still wasn't for me. At least they try and do something unique.
3/10
Blondie
4/5
I'm typically not one for New Wave 80's but Blondie hits different. They had an edge a lot of their contemporaries just didn't have. This album is all killer no filler.
8/10
Lorde
4/5
I've always kinda liked Lorde despite not being into the modern pop girl scene. That being said it mostly stayed on the singles from Pure Heroine. This ain't bad for sure, I could see myself lisening to rest of her stuff someday.
(Insert Randy Marsh joke here)
7/10
Deep Purple
1/5
Oh good god. Convincing me a live album should be on a list like this is already an upwards climb for me. In the grand scheme of things 1000 albums really isn't a lot and unless there is something undeniable about it's importance in musical history (Nirvana's MTV unplugged, Queen at Live Aid, etc.) I see them as just hogging up a spot for a more important album. That's for artists I like too, not Deep Purple, who if their one guitar rift wasn't so easy to learn that it was literally the first one taught to beginners, I don't think anyone would remember today. This was just 2 hours of them jamming. You can't tell me there wasn't some other album somewhere that deserved a spot more than this right? If so just end music now.
2/10
fIREHOSE
3/5
This was dogshit at times and nice at others. Don't really know how to feel about it, might need another listen.
5/10
Aimee Mann
3/5
Sounds like something my dad would put on during a road trip to appease my mom after 5 straight Bob Seeger or Jason Isbel albums. Thought it would be a bit more country after the first track but turned out to be mostly 90's soft poprock. It was a fine and easy listen.
6/10
Lou Reed
4/5
This album made me feel things I can't describe. I don't know how much I liked it but I can't help but give it credit for that.
8/10
Tom Waits
1/5
Alright it's been 3 albums now, it's official. I don't like this guys shtick. It's not bad it's just not for me.
2/10
Turbonegro
3/5
Struggling to review this one. Sonically, this banged but lyrically it teetered between sophomoric and fun. I could see myself enjoying it in the right mood maybe but today it had be rolling my eyes. If these guys stopped acting like they were 12 then I think they really had something here.
5/10
Pixies
5/5
Maybe not as consistent as Doolittle but It just hits differently. Plus is has a song that is legit in the conversation for greatest song of all time so...
9/10
Roxy Music
3/5
Interesting album. Had hints of what was going to happen soon in rock but then really had some dumb stuff in the second half of it that dragged it down for me.
6/10
Beth Orton
2/5
Boring coffee shop ass music.
4/10
Genesis
3/5
It was kinda decent. Don't really have a lot to say tbh. Some of the songs went on a wee bit too long but duh.
6/10
Paul Simon
4/5
Such a delightful songwriter. Hard to have a bad time with him.
8/10
Beyoncé
2/5
Eh. Overproduced modern pop. Interesting that there was nothing here I really recognized. I'm also surprised this is the one album from her that made the cut. If Lemonade was here my guess is we'd be getting at least a 6 outta me.
4/10
R.E.M.
3/5
R.E.M is just boring. Like when they come on the radio they are good enough that you don't turn the channel but you're not sad their song is over, and this is just a whole album of it.
6/10
2/5
Ohhh look and me and my fancy prog rock. We get it dude. Some parts I like but the problem is it's on 12 minute songs with parts I really don't. Damn.
4/10
Grateful Dead
2/5
I get you kinda have to put one Grateful Dead album here considering how big of a deal they are but idk man. Maybe if I saw them live cause this was eh. Nothing grabbed me.
4/10
5/5
Man there is a lot here that should not work. DEVO is full of that 80's New Wave cheese that I tend to hate but there is just a charm and a sort of almost punk attitude to the way they do things that lets it not only stand above the rest of it's contemporaries but elevate to a truly great album.
9/10
Suede
2/5
Generic British album that could be dropped and no one would notice #784
4/10
Goldfrapp
4/5
I came in with low expectations to be honest. I usually am not one for Electronic pop as it was called and the reviews did not seem to be crazy high but I dug this. Easy to listen to good songwriting. I could see myself listening to this again.
8/10
Kanye West
1/5
The previous time I got a Kanye album I gave it 5 starts despite him being... well Kanye. That was because it was, to me, far and away his best album in The College Dropout. Even when I went through my big Kanye phase I never really liked this one. I also made myself a promise that if I rated that one 5/5 the other two would be 1/5, so here we are. Fuck Nazis
1/10, would honestly be about 4/10 without the context this one is so overrated.
The White Stripes
5/5
Coming off their commercial and critical high point in Elephant, The White Stripes took the time honored tradition of taking their time to come out with their most experimental album. In fact, this might be Jack White's most experimental album period (other than maybe Boarding House Reach). Instead of the straightforward, almost punk DIY sound, the duo comes out with a record full of piano, marimba and even xylophone. As a superfan of the group, it should come as no surprise that because of that, this is easily their worst album IMO. And as a superfan of the group it should also come as no surprise that I'm still giving this 5 stars.
10/10
Aphex Twin
1/5
So uh yeah I really didn't vibe with this. Ambient really isn't my thing but I've heard so much about Aphex Twin and know that this is a classic so I thought maybe I'd like this one. Turns out no, in fact I did not. Darn.
2/10
2/5
I'm kind of a hater on U2 but the start of this album is iconic, but it quickly devolves into repetitive boring nonsense.
4/10
The Soft Boys
3/5
Fine little Post-Punk album but it was 2 1/2 hours for some reason. Not what I had the time for on Thanksgiving. At least it wasn't super weird and I enjoyed what I heard.
5/10
The Jesus And Mary Chain
4/5
These guys listened to a bit too much Cure, but honestly really good, for once a real good pull on this list.
7/10
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Definitely the best Rolling Stones album so fat but still just kinda solid. Definitely didn't need to be that long either.
7/10
Belle & Sebastian
4/5
A mix of really interesting stuff and fading into the background. I think if we have a second listen or so, this could be something that I grow to love.
8/10
Pixies
3/5
Decent but far from the best the Pixies have to offer.
6/10
The Mars Volta
1/5
Yeah idk what this was. Not for me that's for sure.
2/10
Simple Minds
2/5
More generic 80's New Wave. At least it was easy to listen to.
4/10
Laura Nyro
3/5
The souls of Carol King and Yoko Oho had a duel and this was the result.
6/10
Kid Rock
1/5
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Look even putting how big of a dipshit he is aside, this is just terrible music. The cringeiest lyrics, and a terrible terrible sound from an era that already sounds bad. I love that he cosplays like he's from the trailer park when the dude grew up rich af. Imagine being rich af but trying to cosplay like your least favorite cousin. The only solace I got was that this album wasn't on Spotify so I didn't give this shitstain any money.
1/10. Would be 0 if I could.
LCD Soundsystem
3/5
LCD Soundsystem is a playlist band. If one of their songs come up in a playlist its fun and find but I never actively seek them out.
6/10
Drive Like Jehu
4/5
Really solid post-punk. Right in my wheelhouse. Will probably end up listening to again.
8/10
Julian Cope
3/5
Hard album for me to pin down, some stuff that I was vibing with but then it would switch up on me real quick. IDK didn't really flow well for me.
5/10
Japan
3/5
Interesting dark New Wave vibes to this but I listened at work, need to get a second one if I really want to sink my teeth into it.
6/10
Songhoy Blues
5/5
Blues rock originating from Timbuk-fucking-tu? Count me in. This right here is what this list is for. Non of that late 60's or 80's British New Wave BS. Some awesome music would have never heard of in a million years without this. Hell yeah. And it was cool to boot.
9/10. Can't wait to get punished by getting 10 albums in a row from 1968 where a bunch of dudes got high on LSD and tried to recreate the Beatles.
3/5
X falls into that group of punk that I never truly got hooked on (seemed to happen a lot with the West Coast). Still really solid stuff overall but nothing super memorable.
6/10
Christine and the Queens
2/5
Eh modern pop with a twinge of 80's synth. Not for me.
4/10
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Funny how a guy who's famously from New Jersey's and his biggest album is named after the state perhaps least like New Jersey.
Really good. For sure my favorite from him, since I'm not typically a Boss kinda guy.
8/10
Michael Jackson
4/5
I mean, he's the King of Pop for a reason.
8/10
Guns N' Roses
5/5
Just too undeniable. 80's rock is usually eye rolling but it's just done to perfection here, goddamn, lightning in a bottle.
9/10
