Reviews (page 3 of 7)
I enjoyed this much more than expected. Not too punk, not too hardcore.
A kind of surf-punk thing, a little samey but still a good sound.
Underdone.
This is fun
Palatable punk. Whats With Terry has a fantastic guitar riff!
Splendid
4+/5
Love The Undertones. They’re my favorite group in the post punk genre, which I usually can’t stand. This album is fun and catchy. Incredible production, surprisingly original writing, and cheeky vocals that are just so charming. Certainly pleased. 4/5
rlly fun listen!! reminds me of talking heads. i added a bunch to my playlist 4/5
Fun 80’s Brit rock, reminiscent of groups like Swueeze and The Kinks
Solid 4
This isn't hitting me quite as hard as their debut, but it's still really good IMHO. A solid 4 with room to grow perhaps.
This was a nice surprise. There was another undertones record on here that I liked enough but this one really grabbed me. Great sound throughout.
Well-written pop punk before pop punk was really a genre. Massively well known in the UK for Teenage Kicks, but they are offering something a little different here, and I'm here for it.
Songs about girls, pervs, weirdos, and dweeby cousins. Solid pop punk that is a product of its time but I think has aged very well and even feels modern in some ways. I dig the guitar work which I thought was creative and fun (a little more surfy, which is to be expected), and a lot of the cuts are nice standouts. I found I enjoyed this album more as it progressed and fits nicely between and alongside Camper Van Beethoven and the Descendents.
4/5 Pretty great
Born and Bred Derry wan here. Undertones are part of the dna. Feargals vibrato however can do one and get in the Foyle
I know this is from 1980 (when I was a teenager), but I get strong Scott Pilgrim soundtrack vibes from this. As an American, The Undertones music never hit my airwaves, and that's a shame.
This album is fun. I didn't know the Undertones before this, but it's pretty good early 80's pop punk. Definitely something I'd listen to again.
This is one thing I like about this project, discovering gems I haven’t got around to. Pretty fine rootsy punk, I can’t believe I missed this! B
Lean, tight, and featuring a healthy sense of humor. A gem most Americans have probably never heard of.
This could have been my favorite album if it was foundational. As it is it's a good time but not much more. Fun and easily digestible.
A short while ago I thought the undertones were a bit of a one hit wonder band - what a total moron! Bangers everywhere! 4.1
First time hearing of the Undertones. Enjoyed their pop, almost surf sound
Yeah you can't go wrong with The Undertones. Possibly enjoy this more than the debut overall although I would say it's peaks are higher. Some I don't know, some I've known and loved all my life My Perfect Cousin the most obvious. Pop punk geniuses and noone sounds like Fergal Shearkey. This did well on Xmas day!
Ok now this is actually cute. Never heard of them. First song wasn’t it. But as the album played, I got hooked. This band is tight. The production is clean. The lead’s voice isn’t my favorite, but this really comes together as quality, classic punk. Fun songs, good beats, sweet riffs. They nailed some blues guitar. Even rearranged a cover song. There’s a real range here. This was a nice surprise. Will definitely revisit. I was going to say the lead sounds like guy who sings Teenage Kicks. Turns out it’s the guy who sings Teenage Kicks.
Very... happy for a punk album.
Loved it. Just good fun and energy, not taking itself too serious. Just my kind of jam.
3.7
Pop punk.
Fun and cheeky, like the first record, only lighter-hearted and maybe slightly more diverse in feel. Though effective musically, "Under the Boardwalk" maybe feels like a piss-taking too far. Vocal harmonies are strong throughout, tones and moods make sense, and in the content and attitude, there's real authenticitiy, a genuine-article feel around this band, an early template of what first-gen, immeditately post-punk, indie pop/rock could and should be. "Wednesday Week" is a winner. "Chocolate & Girls" is just another way of saying sex and drugs and rock and roll, right?
fun album, would listen to it again
Pop punk.
Punks from Derry Northern Ireland. As I remember it was fun to listen to it.
I'm actually surprised, but I liked this album! Fun and lighthearted melodies, mostly with positive vibes (not looking into lyrics though), just overall pleasantly looking record. In my uneducated opinion this type of music is so much better than other 80s post punk pretenders.
Enjoyable 80s Brit-pop. New to me and a few nice catchy tunes. I'd give it another listen and see what grows on me.
Brilliant concise pop music - I love the LP's that come in under 40 minutes! As good and exciting as their first album - a neat and clever follow up. Easy four stars.
Fun listen. Much preferred to more prominent punk bands from the era.
What fun! Vibrato sneer is friendly and fun. Crunchy punky little pop songs and takes itself not at all seriously. Nothing not to like!
Hah! Not many 80's punk/ska fun jammin albums made it on to this list. A nice combination of catchy songs and a cover or two. I dug it.
After this being my second Undertones album, I just was able to piece together that I know them from a compilation of Irish hits that my family had back in the day. Love making these connections! Solid album and up the Irish, of course.
Fun album with pretty unique sounding vocals and heavy instrumentals. Favorite track: Under the Boardwalk
A straight forward 70s punk album. Less energy from their first one.
I didn't like this as much as their S/T, but I still liked it quite a bit. Will listen again.
Fun listen
Fun album that isn't serious at all. I guess you could get that impression from the lobster bibbed lads on the cover.
LOVE IT! FEEL GOOD MUSIC FOR THE MASSES!
In true punk rock fashion, 15 songs 38 minutes. love it. Except for the first song. That was just weird.
Punk pop at its finest. Almost a perfect album. docked a 1/2 star for the out of place cover of Down on the Boardwalk. 4.5 stars
Didn’t expect to enjoy it so much. Early pop punk which stands in contrast to the politics of the Sex Pistols or the diversity of The Clash, but very catchy songs. Far better than The Ramones following essentially the same formula.
Think I've only ever heard teenage kicks from the undertones but this was pretty good. Sounded like the precursor to a lot of pop punk in parts which I preferred but then it was a bit all over the place. First half definitely better than the second, hope the teenage kicks album comes up and that it kicks on from this.
Had not really listened to The Undertones before but I thought this was great. I love a bit of Pop-Punk and didn't realise these guys were one of the first bands in this genre. Highlights: More Songs about Chocolate and Girls Hypnotised Tearproof I Told You So
Know a few undertones songs but never listened to an album. This sounded pretty much as I would've expected and I really enjoyed it. Doesn't take itself too seriously, fun and energetic Not sure it needed an under the boardwalk cover, but I'll let it off Bonus points for mentioning subbuteo in the lyrics for "my perfect cousin". Can't be many songs that do that. Highlights: Hypnotised Whizz kids My perfect cousin Wednesday week I told you so
Back in the day!
Good post punk fun
Good wholesome punky fun
Good fun. Banging tunes and killer tracks alongside some standard punk rock. Very enjoyable though.
Upbeat, pop-punk, good fun!
Always liked the undertones nice to hear songs other than Teenage Kicks
Polite punk? Never really gets hard but consistently good. Enjoyed it
It's good basic R&R
A light four with this now. It definitely is repetitive, but I think it has this light-hearted nature to it that is enjoyable, and I like the singer's voice more than most other punk acts. I sometimes think I don't like punk, but I think my partner's disdain and pop-punk are the reason behind that thought.
I was surprised that I enjoyed this one so much as well. It takes two of my least favorite genres, punk and new wave and merges them together. For me, the result was perfect. Never heard of them before but I would definitely check out more of their songs.
The vocalist is so familiar. Surely not.... but yes! Bloody Feargal Sharkey! Why didn't I know about this band? Energetic, fun, funny, sarcastic, with variety. A night with these boys on stage and you'd be a sweaty mess.
This was not what I expected and in a good way! (For once!) Pretty enjoyable upbeat music and if you'd asked me I'd have said they were American by the sounds, so to discover they're Northern Irish was another pleasant surprise. Interested to see if they appear again.
A simply addictive pop punk crossover from before that was a proper genre. Each guitar riff is catchy and the lyrics speak of being young, dumb and out of one’s mind. Perfect bass lines backbone this stud of an entry into the legendary bands canon.
Yesterday I had the Clash...today I get the Undertones. This week is starting out great! Fun little punk rock album. Quite enjoyable! I usually don't like too many cover songs, but they do a decent job with Under the Boardwalk. Standouts: There Goes Norman, Under the Boardwalk, What's With Terry Others: Hypnotised, and everything else! Third listen: 3/5 & 3/5 the first two times. Rating: 4/5
More punk that I enjoyed. I missed my calling. The "Under the Boardwalk" cover very nearly pushed it to 5 star territory.
“It’s never too late to enjoy dumb entertainment “- The Undertones Doubling down on melody & earworms this time- and it works! "The Way Girls Talk" sounds like an ancestor to "My Name is Jonas" by Weezer in the chorus HL: “More Songs About Chocolate…”, title track, "Under the Boardwalk", "Wednesday Week" March 30, 2023
Excellent 80s British band. Satisfyingly angular, fuzzy edge with relatable lyrics if you grew up in the UK. Excellent music for urban cycling and wistful memories of teenage simplicity
Punky
Instantly Irish. This is straight punk. No surprises. All fun stuff but nothing to blow me away. My favourites are "There Goes Norman", "Tearproof", and "Girls That Don't Talk" Personal Enjoyment - 8 Songwriting - 7 Lyrics - 7 Originality - 7 Production Value - 9 Artwork - 10 Overall - 7.6
The last time I listened to the Undertones was 500 albums ago when this project was new to me and I was not quite as adept at writing a daily review as I am now. For their first album, I wrote, "It was fun! Good rock n roll," which I think is still true. I will add that I thought that Feargal Sharkey's vocals are distinctive and fun, again, and that I liked their clever young angst lyrics, again. It's been so long that I'm not sure how distinctive this album is from the first, but I did enjoy it, again.
I found the tracks on this album pretty catchy and fun. There were times when I thought "Oh, this sounds like..." (and I couldn't actually fill in the blank other than to think that it was some other band that I have heard before), but it is just as likely that that other band sounded like The Undertones than The Undertones sounding like them. Pretty good, I reckon.
Light-weight and youthful. Concerned with boys and girls and they're getting together or not. Fun.
Episkt album! Trum inspiration mycket?
Some decent early pop-punk. Nothing really stuck with me that much on the first listen, but listening to this straight after a phychedelic rock album that was previously given to me by the list, kind of made this feel a bit overshadowed to me. I thought the riffs were great, and the vocals were fine. Lyrics weren't the best, but ehh, not expecting anything too edgy or advanced for some light-hearted teenage pop-punk. Might listen again eventually. Favourite: Hypnotised
A great record full of wit and energy.
It's cool.
I wish this site had a half star rating option because I'd probably give it a 3.5, but I don't want to be unfair and give it a 3. I liked it. Nothing groundbreaking or life changing but it was a nice little group of fun rock songs with a lot of personality and humor.
Fun album early punk-era album.
Yeah fun enjoyable
I was once hypnotised on stage in front of about 2000 people. I began fingering the woman next to me. I thought I was playing the harp.
I dont know why I don't listen to this band more often. Just a good album for fans of the genre. It's not 5 star good, but it's a strong 4 for sure.
Gotta get me them teenage kicks.
The first Undertones records was one of my first big discoveries in this list. This one is really good too.
Really like these guys. Favorite track: Hypnotised
Good ol surf rock
Excellent record, full of fun, and punchy.
Loved this album, just bop after bop. Favourite tracks (in no particular order): Under the Boardwalk, My Perfect Cousin, What's With Terry, There Goes Norman, and Boys Will Be Boys. 4.5
I very much hearted this album. Yes, hearted as in I loved it.
Brilliant slab of pop punk
Enjoyed this. Maybe not 4*, better than 3
Great album, but albums were not primarily where the Undertones were at imo. Peerless with the 3 minute 45rpm, with Teenage Kicks being in my all time top ten singles. On this album we have two absolute classics - My Perfect Cousin and Wednesday Week
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Hypnotised, Under the boardwalk
Simple and energetic pop punk from 1980. Very cool! I have only one issue with such albums - there's like 50 songs on it and they all sound very much alike. Hard to really pick something out of it as a result. Still, the album is very consistent throughout its entire duration (pretty short) and is packed with cool hooks. The instrumentals, production, lyrics - all of that is simple and just stands out of the way of pure fun coming from listening to this record. Plus, this is a great album to listen to while driving! Favorites: There Goes Norman, See That Girl (with a bit of a 60s parapapa in the background), Under The Boardwalk, Wednesday Week (totally sounds like a Beatles song) 4/5
Leuke dansbare poppunk.
Enjoyable! Some good beats!
This was more fun that I was expecting!
Not too sure about the lyrics/subject matter of the songs, as I was doing dishes and making dinner while listening, but it was pretty darn catchy.
notes - cool delivery and style from the singer - most songs are under 3 mins, get in and get out - i like the cover art - i had head “my perfect cousin” at a store and it made me laugh, didnt know who it was until now fav song - hypnotised - cool guitar part, catchy chorus, lots of energy in the vocals least fav - whizz kids - felt like a bit of a by-the-numbers punk song album won me over more as it went on 4/5
Some fun pop punk! Doesn't take itself too seriously which is nice
Wednesday Week is incredible
bangers from beginning to end
Good garage rock. Not really punk, none of the anti-establishment content that marks punk out from the rest, and technically too smooth. Feargal Sharkey had a unique voice, that makes them unmistakable.
Nice
If this is punk, it's definitely one of the best I've heard. I had fun listening to it
pretty fun!
Punk
Just good clean fun, with a smart dash of self awareness that isn’t allowed to rise to such a level as to overshadow the intent. A little lightweight, but when it’s so clearly and deteriminedly by design, is that really a minus?
Super fun. Like a punkier and less mature Squeeze. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Has to be one of the daftest album covers of all time, but I can't help but like that too.
Nice
great beats, fun lyrics, weird cover of under the boardwalk - 4.3
The Undertones are more of a singles band than an album band, imo. But this album does have one of the classic singles on it. Not just by them, but of all time. My Perfect Cousin and Wednesday Week are excellent examples of punk pop perfection, both in the lyrics and the melody. Great version of ‘Boardwalk’, too. Some of the album is a bit filler, but I love this band, and album, for proving that punk didn’t always have to take itself too seriously.
Hugely enjoyable- Feargal has got some voice!
Great voice and a very enjoyable album!
Good
This was a straightforward but fun punk rock album that could grow on me even more with repeated listens.
Very last century
Great fun, fast paced, cracking tunes.
This was really fun and a good indicator of what PopPunk should be. A fun little tidbit about this band, they're from Derry, Northern Ireland and were popular during 'The Troubles'. I highly recommend the Netflix series 'Derry Girls' which takes place at the same time and gives a visual to what it was like being young during this period.
Snuck in as a four.
Tolles Album. Hat mich an die Replacements erinnert. Der Sänger trällert manchmal wie Jello Biafra. Schön!
Mint!
Amazing early punk album
A bit on the bizarre sounding side, but it's upbeat and fun. Solidly 3.5+, so we'll call it a 4.
7/19
Some good tracks
teenage rock mmmmm very healthy. mmmmmmm youth
This album is 100% fun to borrow from Matthew Sweet. This is pop punk at its best. Fearful Sharkeys voice gives the album a note of whimsy, but the chorus are as tough and ucompriing, 3 75 stars
This is kind of a weird album. The music is great and well-produced. Their voices are a bit grating, and their lyrics leave a lot to be desired. Overall it's a pretty interesting listen, but it kind of feels like the music is being wasted a bit by not having better vocal accompaniment 4/5, though very far on the low end of 4
Fun
Great album! Everything I love: punk guitar riffs, simple song structures, catchy choruses, and an overall fun experience.
This was a nice surprise and quite suitable for me as it was not too raw Post-Punk. Still melodic music, singing was also actual singing so this deserves a 4
punk rock - quite enjoyable
Auper
Yet again, I am my parents child. I really enjoyed this album and have been singing My Perfect Cousin ever since. Very much seems like an influence of T-Rextasy who I would kill to watch at the Empty Bottle again.
Better light punk than expected - fun album
Good solid punk album. The vocals started to grate on me after a while, though. Standout tracks for me: “There Goes Norman” and “Under The Boardwalk.”
Album kind slaps I'll be honest. It gives me hard anemoia vibes. Like I feel really heavy nostalgia for the time period this album evokes. These like 1980's finding love for the first time next to a beach in the sun. It's pretty cool. It doesn't feel dated like most of the other albums I've listened to. At least not in bad cheesy way. But there is definitely some cheese in there.
proto pop punk
Fun and spunky album
Enjoyed this way more than expected. Fergal Sharkey's voice is a bit marmite and I'm on the wrong side of that divide, but there's no denying the infectious energy. Interestingly and unusually for rock music, I think almost every song is in 2/4 time. In any event, all the same beat, and all the song lyrics are variations on either "it's not fair, he's got more than me" or "it's not fair, she doesn't love me" but nevertheless I still loved it. Avoided this sort of stuff like the plague in the 70s (along with all punk/new wave) but happy to discover I was wrong.
Pretty stinkin' great.
Most enjoyable!
Have never heard anything from them before but loved it! A fun easy listen in the early days of the Pop Punk sound. 1) More Songs About Chocolate And Girls 4* 2) Thee Goes Norman 4* 3) Hypnotised 4* 4) See That Girl 3* 5) Whizz Kids 3* 6) Under The Boardwalk 4* 7) The Way Girls Talk 3* 8) Hard Luck 3* 9) My Perfect Cousin 4* 10) Boys Will Be Boys 4* 11) Tearproof 3* 12) Wednesday Week 4* 13) Nine Times Out Of Ten 4* 14) Girls That Don't Talk 4* 15) What's With Terry 4*
Heerlijk klassieke punk. Hier word ik wel blij van.
Enjoyed this v much
Really fun album. Enjoyed the energy and that is was punk that’s only significant quality musically was being loud. Favorite Tracks: “More Songs About Chocolate and Girls” and “See That Girl”
Fun album. The music was good but the songs all sounded the same. I liked it overall.
nice surprise, many cool and familiar tracks
Pretty good! Kind of weird
false
fucked rad
good post punk. nothing as catchy as “teenage kicks” tho
Early punk is good punk
Had not heard all of these songs. Awesome and fun
nice upbeat punk album that has lyrically a lot of content to add that might be lacking in other albums in the genre
Really had a fun time listening, but need to revisit to distinguish more songs since the sound was so cohesive it all blended together.
A fun album I wasn't familiar with. Not sure if I'll go back to it but it was a good afternoon listen.
This started as a decent pop punk album, but became mushy and one-note after the first few songs. Still fun, but dropped to a 2.5
This was fine, but kinda underwhelming.
Even in punks first generation - people were insistsnt on taking the edge off of it and falling back to pop sensibilities. The Undertones manage this rather tastefully - but part of me can't help but compare it to it's not-so-distant relative pop punk, which I belive to be an overall blemish on the genre. With that being said - this record isn't all too bad. It's got some fun tracks - just goes on maybe a slight too long.
7,5/10 Highlights My perfect cousin Hypnotised Tearproof
This album is pretty good. Best song was a cover, but still OK. I'll say a 3.
3.35 for The Undertones. I appreciate the short song length and undertones of punk, maybe early post punk, but more along the lines of pop punk? I'm intrigued and would like to hear more from them. Their cover of Under the Boardwalk was fun. Winners: There Goes Norman More Songs about Chocolate and Girls Boys Will Be Boys Girls That Don't Talk
3 - decent
Entertaining. Might be a tad long.
Blind album and artist. I liked some of the less punk-like songs. More alternative or post punk more than punk tracks.
Catchy in moments, full of energy - just lacking a certain something
If I had a nickel for every time I heard “Under the Boardwalk” covered this month, I’d have 2 nickels, which isn’t a lot, but it’s strange that it happened twice. For that reason, I honestly want to call it my favorite song on the album. It’s catchy, and I’m starting to love hearing the different interpretations of it from artist to artist. This was a nice little album. Short and sweet, very much to the point. It’s over before you even know it and starts from the top very quickly, which is a big point in its favor. 15 songs, 38 minutes that all feel short. However, they do all feel a tad repetitive and samey. Nothing that’s really very memorable or interesting here. This album isn’t winning any awards for being new, surprising, or breaking any pre-existing molds that need breaking. I’m probably going to forget about it by tomorrow, but it wasn’t bad, just forgettable and very, very generic. The lead singers voice was fine, as was the guitar playing. It’s very lively and energetic. A very traditional Punk/Rock album. Probably just a little more Punk than Rock. They yell at you for about 40 minutes, and then the album ends, but it feels like it only lasted for about half of that time. In other words, it serves its purpose nicely. I wouldn’t necessarily return to this, but I’m not upset for listening to it today. Decent little filler album, and definitely better than the actual trash I’ve been rolling lately. This was a very nice change of pace for what it is, and it came across my page at the perfect time. The best thing I can say about this album is that it’s catchy when you actually have it playing. The worst is that it’s forgettable when you don’t, and it’s probably going to be out of my mind by the next time I get a good album. But hey, isn’t that one of the points of Punk music technically?? They’re not going to care who it sticks with. They’re just here to jam. This is album 1 out of 2 The Undertones albums I have rolled for this project. This album was fine, not amazing, but it has me questioning why this very basic Punk warrants having 2 separate albums on here. I can’t imagine the other one is any different. Who knows, I could be wrong. This one’s a 3. Easy decision.
6 / 10
Nice. Not fantastic, but very nice.
Some great new wave/DEVO riffs, Mellow Biafra vocals. Ripped straight from the Revenge of the Needs soundtrack.
The crazy thing about this generator is the daily shifts that happen depending on what you draw. This is a fine album. Very happy and jangly. But coming of the 1-2-3 punch of Ice Cube, White Stripes, and Beastie Boys, it kind of pales in comparison. Maybe a revisit will cause me to reassess. I was underwhelmed this morning.
This is pop punk - no edge, no attitude it’s just silly. I mean it’s fine but more blah blah blah. I’ve become very jaded. Need a really good legendary album that never heard really soon. I mean there are 400 more records to listen to here.
i prefer their debut, but this is still a nice album. i liked "girls that don't talk", fun tune!
Det här var väl trallpunkigt och kul.
Boys will be boys va? Rätt basic. Svag trea!
Skojigt och peppigt. Tihi
Notables: - I told you so
A good album, I liked Under The Boardwalk and I Don’t Wanna See (You Agajn) the most.

It's fine. Very early 80s
This was decent, but nothing stood out to me as particularly great.
It was pretty good, doesn't seem like it was pushing a lot of boundaries though. Not a fan of the vocals style either. Other thsn that it was pretty good
Kinda sounds like generic alt rock now. Likely influential on other bands later who perfected it.
I didn't realize that I had heard The Undertones' music before until I heard this album. "Under the Boardwalk" was actually the theme of my junior prom. (I know...bad idea if you're trying to prevent teen pregnancies, right?) Overall, I found the album to be a good listen, but nothing super special. If the music was on the radio, I it would be hit or miss if I changed the station. Would probably be something I kept on if I was on a road trip or if I was feeling more nostalgic. Hard to believe the album is more than 40 years old. The 80s was only 20 years ago, man...
I'm having to bite my biases a bit and give this a 3 instead of a 4. I could leave this on repeat, but given that I already liked this album, I'm trying to be more measured.
Good shit
Okayy
pop punk was never the genre that i reach for reflexively. i’ll give credit where credit is due, cause this is a fun poppy record, but i have no particular feelings toward it otherwise
eh
These guys have a similar sound in some ways as the Dead Kennedys, just without the James Bond-like riffs and without the hard-hitting social commentary. The guy's voice has some similarities to Biafra though. Not sure who influenced who as they both came out about the same time. While this is decent, it's not quite as epic as DK. 3/5
This is kinda fun. Like Sparks mixed with britpop. I don't like the punkier songs, but otherwise this is pretty good.
For a band of fellow Countrymen, I really only know a couple of their songs, neither of which is on this album. This is fine. Completely forgettable. No hits. No impact or wider cultural importance. Ergo, zero reason for it to be considered something you need to hear before you die.
In their accents "There Goes Norman" sounded like "varicose woman." From the jump, this very much sounded like a punk band from the 70s that entered the 80s and decided to get goofy and poppy. I had never heard of this band until I encountered their debut on this list and I was extremely pleasantly surprised by it. This, though, ehhhhhhh.... To be fair, there are some tracks here where they are doing something outside of the Buzzcock-ish milleu that's fun and interesting ("The Way Girls Talk"). There are also some solid riffs and some pop-punk bangers in here (esp. "Hard Luck"). But when it sounds like they're trying to get on the charts, eh, I'm out.
Nice Punk but after the 5th song its the same over and ofer and i couldnt listned it thrue
The Clash para irlandeses. Minhas favoritas foram “More Songs About Chocolate and Girls”, “Under the Boardwalk”, “Hard Luck” e “What’s with Terry”.
I finally get to meet the band behind punk classic “Teenage Kicks.” This album didn’t have any material that I found as infectious and hooky, but it bears that sunshine punk sound. A lot of these tracks melded together for me, and I wish they explored more of the acoustic arrangements used for “What’s With Terry” (which I found to be by far the most interesting track on the record) in order to stand out from every other garage band of the day.
80’s Punk ⭐️Under the Boardwalk
A lot of youthful energy.
The Undertones great second album
Early Britpunk.
Fav song: Under the Boardwalk
Great to put in the background, i neither love or hate this
Enjoyed the album, seemed like a precursor to 90’s British punk before it took off. Fave song: Under the boardwalk, Wednesday Week
moauif
Fun but average
Not a bad album. Kind of minimal sounding rock/punk with interesting songs. 3/5
Unremarkable
Pretty dope old punk album, didn’t enjoy all of the songs but most of them were great
Nothing about this stood out to me, good or bad. I feel like I have heard this kind of music many times before. Its easy to listen to and fun most of the time. I just don't really know when I would listen to this again and choose it over others. Still a fun listen through of an album and band I haven't heard of before.
fun for a bit, Ian recognized them immediately but, in his words, 'too same-y, gets boring'. The scotsman has spoken, 2. I am more generous, they sing and play their hearts out on every track and I love that.
Fun record. Good guitar tones.
Short and sweet. Simple and catchy. Terrible cover version. My Perfect Cousin is great. 3.
Slightly underwhelmed by the Undertones here. A bit basic and samey with a couple of corkers. What ot did do is Inspire me to listen to That Petrol Emotion, the group formed from remaining members after the Undies disbanded. Massively underated I would encourage others take a listen
A very average post punk album propped up by a banging hit. All a bit formulaic and simple and hasn’t aged well. Scrapes a 3 on a sunny day.
Good album. I liked it.
Fine, don’t recall too much from it.
Cool punky late 70s sound
Just a bunch of short fun songs that didn’t really mean much. 2.5/5
Some people are calling this punk but it seems far too poppy to be punk. Anyway it’s fine for a song or 2 but far too repetitive. 2.5
Like the undertones, liked this album. Some great pop punk tunes on here. Somewhat samey in places but overall a good listen.
Album cover is hilarious, music was fine
I really liked this more than I thought I would. And I don't like punk pop music, but this was really, really solid. Giving this a 3 cause I'm glad I listened to it but probably wouldn't return to it.
Buen álbum de punk, divertido. No me rompió la cabeza tampoco. Pero se disfrutó. 5/10
Album #92 The Undertones: Hypnotised A band that I was only aware of due to them having made the song which John Peel, who knew a thing or two about music, considered to be the greatest of all time, “Teenage Kicks”. And while I respect Peel for his music taste and putting on a lot of great bands, after listening to more Undertones, I do wonder whether his affinity for that song was based on the actual music, or because of his other affinity for real teenage “kicks”. Hypnotised is a good crop of pop-punk tracks, with a bit more of a new-wavey production to it than some of the earlier pop-punk releases. While they are certainly no Buzzcocks, the songs are fun, and they don’t take themselves too seriously either. It’s almost impossible not to find this album at least amusing; however, unless you are John Peel, it also seems impossible to find it amazing. It’s a cool album that I probably wouldn’t have checked out, but I am not sure that it quite reaches the status that one would expect from an album on this list. Best Tracks: Wednesday Week, See That Girl, Girls That Don’t Talk Worst Track: Hard Luck Score out of 10: 6.5
Pretty cool proto pop punk / proto indie pop. I liked the teenage themes and whimsical nature of the record. This is a fun one to hang out to.
I was perfectly whelmed by this album. I mildly enjoyed it for about 40 minutes and then moved on with my day. Fun pop punk, but not really much to see here. Probably could have gone my life without listening to The Undertones, but no harm done. Cool to see an Irish band, though. Favorite track: "What's With Terry?"
1/15 bekannt 5,5/10 Beste Songs: Hypnotised, under the boardwalk, what’s with terry
> The Beatles
Another fun album from the band I discovered here. Not as strong as their debut album (heard here also), but fun and punk-poppy just the same.
aggressively fine; 3 stars
This album is very solidly average. The lyrics are pretty juvenile and there’s not a lot of creative sound going on, but the songs bopped just fine. I liked their Under the Boardwalk cover.
I enjoyed quite a lot of this one. Some good tunes though some repetitiveness and probably a few I’d skip if I ever listened to it again.
A fairly non-descriptive band in the whole punk genre, but they do have a certain charm. My perfect cousin is the top track.
Alright, though not standout.
I knew nothing about this band, so I had no expectations. For the most part I enjoyed it, although the vibrato in the vocals got annoying at times. Three stars.
Perfectly fine, good but with them already having a bigger better album on the list, its overkill Passable

I'll level with you; other than Teenage Kicks and a couple of their other tracks, I don't really rate these dudes. It's well produced but I find the lyrics pretty asinine most of the time. Some will find the youthful naiveté charming but to me it's all a bit too jolly to be punk. And a bit too calculating, somehow. They're closer to their own perfect cousins than they'd like you to think. Maybe a bit sexist in hindsight too.
I really wanted to go listen to Bad Habits when I was listening to this. Which I did. The Undertones compared unfavourably. That may not be fair, but if life were fair I’d be unemployed and homeless.
Enjoyable three star - had the two year old and the four year old bopping along at the dinner table
Truly the most 3/5 album of all time
Bueno
Energetic pop-punk. Great fun. 3.5
Haven’t had time to listen to this properly so briefly catching up. About half way through track 7 and get the measure if it. It’s ok. Not really my thing. Will persevere but I don’t imagine becoming a mega fan. I can imagine collecting albums as a teenager tho.
Peak pub ambiance
3 5
Ok
3.0 Hypnotised (38:11, 15 tracks, 2nd album, 1980) Punk (early pop punk) Irish (Derry) First listen I was like ‘meh’ but it grew on me. Although the primary lyrical concern of the songs upon this album focused upon teenage angst, boisterousness, and heartbreak (as had been the case with their debut album), several of the songs upon are notably both lyrically and musically more sophisticated than previous material. The Undertones choose not to address The Troubles in Ireland which were ubiquitous in Ireland at the time. Hypnotised was the highest-charting album of their career. Brothers John and Vincent O’Neil originally, and after Vincent left Damian O’neil joined, along with 3 other childhood friends. Two singles: "My Perfect Cousin", and "Wednesday Week". Album Cover – hate it - the photo was taken by Damian O'Neill, and depicts the band's bassist Michael Bradley and drummer Billy Doherty. The image itself was taken at a seafood restaurant in the Bowery, where the band had been taken for a meal by the manager of Sire Records, Seymour Stein, on their first tour of America in September 1979. Favorite Song - Hypnotised and There Goes Norman 1. "More Songs About Chocolate and Girls" 2:43 2. "There Goes Norman" 2:28 3. "Hypnotised" 2:31 4. "See That Girl" 2:25 5. "Whizz Kids" 2:20 6. "Under the Boardwalk" 2:27 7. "The Way Girls Talk" 2:30 8. "Hard Luck" 3:42 9. "My Perfect Cousin" 2:36 10. "Boys Will Be Boys" 1:27 11. "Tearproof" 2:21 12. "Wednesday Week" 2:17 13. "Nine Times Out of Ten" 2:38 14. "Girls That Don't Talk" 2:27 15. "What's With Terry?" 3:19 The Undertones Feargal Sharkey - lead vocals John O'Neill - guitar, vocals Damian O'Neill - guitar, keyboards, vocals Michael Bradley - bass, keyboards (on "See That Girl"), vocals Billy Doherty - drums
Quick, fun album. 80’s bop-style punk. Sounds like something Tony Hawk grew up skating to.
It's fun for about 3 songs, after that it gets a little corny. They're still good at rhythm sections and have cool energy, but something about it rubs me the wrong way a bit.
This is another 3.5 for me, but I can't seem to bump it up to 4 for this scale, as I just think it is "good" but not really that impressive. I'm not a big pop punk fan, so maybe this proto-pop punk just doesn't move me in any significant way. I would listen to this album again, but that doesn't make it anything so incredibly substantial; it's just fun and a good time.
A fun album although the tracks all start to sound the same by the end.
Fun album.
Never heard of these guys before and I enjoyed this listen. 60s garage punk new wave with simple but good melodies and the singer's voice reminded me a bit of Jello Biafra with his vibrato. This is definitely in my rotation now
It was ok. Like a watered down Beach Boys.
Even before pop punk was a global phenomena and aesthetic choice for suburban youth in the late 1990’s, these guys were still singing about women as if they were some mysterious object over some super simple 4-chord-choruses. Some things don’t change. “Hypnotised” has the best chorus imo, the ‘H-Y-P Hypnotised’ line is great. Interesting cover of “Under The Boardwalk” that didn’t go off too terribly. But “Boys Will Be Boys” was my least favorite, as the title isn’t the only time that dumb line is mentioned in this album. 3/5 just put it on and have some fun
Ok
Easy to listen to. Extra point for lobster bibs on the album cover.
Enjoyed it...strong 3.
A decent little pop-punk album. Solid riffs only marred by the occasional dud track, Sharkey's overdone vibrato or both.
New wave Irish guys, enjoyed and could listen again
Rating: 7/10
Nostalgic even though I’ve never heard it before
Toll
Early 80s punk/alt short tunes nothing really stood out boring after a while
Surprisingly enjoyable...
Cool album
Just a fun album
Nope, I hadn't heard of the Undertones, though now I realize I had heard of Feargal Sharkey solo in the 80's. Just based on the release date of the record and the bratty rock kind of drive, we might consider Hypnotised to be sort of New Wave, but I kept thinking of a mashup of Public Image Limited and Green Day, like the Undertones could have been a cohort among pretty boy neo-punk bands in the twenty aughties. Snappy, fun guitar romps about juvenile matters.
Favorite track(s): There Goes Norman, Tearproof, Wednesday Week
Nothing special. Catchy though. 3.5/5
I like how every review compares this to completely different bands. I personally thought it sounded like something between Beatles and Green Day
3/6
A solid punky album, I enjoyed it for the most part but it didn’t blow me away
I really liked it.
This was like a pop rock Dead Kennedys
2.5
Sounds like the ramones. Also hints of oldie rock. The most obvious is the cover of Under the Boardwalk, but other tracks also remind me of an older era (like The Monkeys). Fun listen.
There's a place in the world for big, dumb punk songs. And this is a solid collection of them. Also, A+ album cover
