The theatrical-ness of it (esp. Peter Gabriel) might remind you of Iron Maiden or Kiss or some shit and put you off, but when you realise that they’re much more high-brow, v. well thought out and more tasteful, they become one of the best bands in the world. All masters of their own craft. It’s basically jazz/classical with contemporary instruments. More Led Zeppelin than Led Zeppelin. More Pink Floyd than Pink Floyd. More Beatles than Beatles. Metal before metal, shoegaze before shoegaze. You could have been listening to The Temptations in ‘73. Genesis have a vast discography going in different directions with different members but for me this is peak Genesis. Earlier/later albums might be ‘better’, but dynamically this one hits the sweet spot. One of my favourite albums of all time. Want to go We need to smoke one to this in February. Synth-pop/new wave pioneer. Years before any Human League, Duran Duran etc. 80s music in the late 70s. Pop music. But too weird to be pop music. He really has a sound… Some of the more missable tracks on the album sound like the big hitters. Blends into one but not in a conceptual way, more of a lack of ideas way. Boring. The ‘difficult second album’ theory blown out of the water. Radioheads second was everything that the first was lacking. A peak of their form of alt-rock, before beginning to create their own sound entirely. One that will dominate and influence the minds of music nerds from Oxford to Osaka for the next 25 years. Following album with a similar sound would have been next to impossible. Having singles like Just, High and Dry and Street Spirit. Whilst having cult classics such as Fake Plastic Trees or Nice Dream or Blackstar. An album where when I want to listen to a song off the album, I end up listening to the whole thing. An album cover that scared me when looking through my parents records when I was a kid. Iconic. British alt-pop-rock perfection. Half a point dropped for My Iron Lung. Love to hate. Hate to love. But this is their album. Can’t deny it. Pop rock wasn’t doing very well in the early 00s. Lacked direction while lacking balls. My favourite metal album. Was honestly my favourite album when I was getting into music. Out of all the CDs my mum and dad had. This one for a time had a special place. I now look at my favourite, favourite types of music and albums, and themes and similar aspects are in this one. It’s like a metal genesis album. This is their best. Unfortunately the production isn’t the best. Apparently Plampin tells me they haven’t got the master tapes anymore so they can’t even remaster it. And that all adds to the concept in that almost other-worldly way. Metallica are a cheesy metal band. Metalheads hate them. Your nans heard Enter Sandman and she hates it. Now then. I can’t explain why this is a 5 while doing it justice. The last ‘proper’ Beatles album. This album was my musical awakening. Smoked a joint at 17 and listened to the whole thing with Darwent. Didn’t speak. Never forget it. Suddenly, my adolescent music didn’t do it for me anymore. Went through a Beatles phase, completely obsessed. Even to this day, whilst being into prog bands, nothing comes close to the emotion and depth to this whole thing. This is 50 years later. Some of the sounds and effects are mind blowing for the time. Imagine it at the time. If Sgt. Pepper gave Brian Wilson depression, this surely gave him a haemorrhage. Sot: All of them. Why not to go solo. The Smiths were brilliant because of the contrasting feeling between the music and vocals. His nihilistic emotion seems less tongue in cheek without Marrs melodies. More serious, like he means it, truly. Regardless of how good and clever they are, the words just don't hit the same. Ends up middle of the road more times than not. 2.5/5

When Queen were like... prog-metal? Glam? Honestly think this has some of the best Queen features of tunes without being 'over popified'. Of course Queen were the band they are for those tunes, but its easy to understand their strangely broad fanbase. Especially people of a certain age. Brilliant musicians, great songwriting. Never liked Supergrass. Never liked their childish, playful mood. Damn them! Hate Alright. Coming off the back of the Britpop wave, rock music was always going to take a turn. Recently found out AC/DC was a slang term for bisexuality. Dont tell Angus Young. First album after their original lead singer died. You dont really get many bands who still carry on after a death, especially under the same name, especially when they had so much credibility already. Bon Scott died of alcohol overdose in London, hence the Big Ben chimes. Actually a bit of a nutcase. Worth a google. Seems it took Dave Grohl around 12 months from the death of Kurt Cobain to get from behind the drum kit to fronting a full length album. That's that quick it almost seems insensitive. Saying that there must have been some pre planning. Never been an "album band" but has a few tracks that would stand the test of time. There's definitely some Nirvana influence in places but, I mean, who else? Influences go about everywhere second half. Listening to it all objectively though, it's very much okay. Nothing on Nirvana, but it wasn't going to be. As a lot of Cobains demons were inspired somewhat by overcomercialism, Foo Fighters, especially this first album, are almost a cynical "I told you so" from beyond the grave. It slips nicely right between early Blink records and other US pop-punk from the mid 90s. People love it. But right there is the line between creating for art and expression, or for product. Who knows for sure? 2/5 Sot: This Is a Call I'll stick around Big Me Good grief
